john sexton essay contest 2022

Over the past few months, Aidan Gouley ’23 has earned two prestigious academic distinctions for scholarly work he has completed outside of the Regis classroom. The Concord Review , the only quarterly journal in the world that publishes the work of high school students, will feature a paper written by Gouley in its upcoming Winter issue. This summer, a different paper crafted by Gouley earned first prize in the highly competitive 2022 John Sexton Essay Contest.

Gouley’s article for The Concord Review focused on the economic consequences of the Suez Crisis on Great Britain. He wrote his History term paper in his junior year on the same topic and expanded and refined it over the summer with the encouragement of Ms. Gena Reisig, the chair of the History Department, before submitting it to the Concord Review for consideration.

“ The Concord Review is truly unique as the only history journal to publish the academic work of high school students. It is remarkable in its commitment to encouraging students to engage with - and write long form research papers about - critical historical and social issues, and is a unique outlet for intellectual expression,” Gouley said. “My passion for history drove me to do the necessary research and writing to publish on an era-defining issue, and I am incredibly fortunate to have my work included in The Concord Review. ”

In August, Gouley also was awarded the first prize in the highly competitive 2022 John Sexton Essay Contest, during a ceremony held at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Gouley is now spending his senior year at Regis as a John Sexton scholar. John Sexton, previously the President of New York University for 13 years, founded the John Sexton Scholars Program in 2020 to, “promote awareness of current international crises involving conflict and displaced peoples, especially those with little media attention,” and, “to provide substantive professional and academic opportunities to the next generation of change makers.”

Each year, the program organizes an essay competition – open to all high school students in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut – to select the next contingent of Sexton Scholars. This year, contestants were tasked with drafting a 500-word policy recommendation concerning the Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar as well as broader climate-driven mass migrations around the world. A panel of highly regarded scholars and foreign affairs experts selected this year's winners. Eight contestants were invited to become Sexton Scholars, and among them, the top three submissions were ranked on their individual merit. Gouley’s submission was awarded first place.

Regis is proud of Gouley for these impressive academic achievements on top of all of his work inside and outside the classroom on 84th Street!

Announcing TGC’s 2024 Essay Contest for Young Adults

Writers aged 16–22 can get published and win $500.

More By Staff

john sexton essay contest 2022

The Gospel Coalition announces its 2024 essay contest, inviting young adults (ages 16–22) to explore and write about God’s faithfulness, their relationship with technology, and their heart for full-time ministry in our secular age.

Winning authors will receive a prize, and their essays will be published on TGC’s website. In addition, every writer who submits an essay will receive a coupon code for $50 off the Gen-Z registration for our TGC25 conference .

Essay Requirements

Each 800–1,000 word essay must be original, previously unpublished, and must respond to one of the following three prompts. With each of these prompts, contestants should draw from their own experiences and convictions, and use Scripture to support their conclusions. (Want examples? Read the winning essays from 2022 and 2023 .) Contestants must give permission to TGC to publish their work, and each essay will be judged by TGC’s editorial team.

Submissions will be accepted from June 1 to July 1 and winners will be announced on September 2, 2024.

1. When did the Lord love you by not giving you what you wanted?

Many of us have unfulfilled desires. When was a time you saw the Lord’s love and kindness when he withheld something from you? What was it that you wanted and how did you see the Lord’s faithfulness through not giving it to you? Tell us what you learned from your experience, especially considering that our culture tells us we deserve to have all our desires fulfilled.

2. How has the gospel changed your relationship with your phone?

Today, phones are considered a necessity rather than a luxury. How does the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ change how you view your phone and how you use it? How has your phone been a hindrance and how has it been an asset to your relationship with the Lord? Tell us what you’ve learned in navigating how to use your phone for the glory of God.

3. Why are you considering full-time ministry?

There’s a greater need than ever for young people to pursue full-time ministry. Why are you considering making ministry your vocation? Tell us your heart behind it, why you think it’s important, and what influences in your life have led you to move forward in this direction.

The contest winner will receive $500; second place will receive a $100 gift card to the TGC bookstore; third place will receive an assortment of books. The winning essays will be published on TGC’s website, as will any other essays the judges select.

By car: 97 km down Simferopol highway, turn right towards Serpukhov.

Get around [ edit ]

History [ edit ].

Located at a point where two rivers Oka and Nara merge, this city was a capital of the Serpukhov princedom during Troubled times. For the first time, it was mentioned in 1328 in the letter of Ivan Kalita, who was doing an inventory of his property. The most famous Serpukhov prince was Vladimir Andreevich, who received a nickname Brave for participation in the Kulikov fight. In 1483 the princedom was finally attached to the Moscow area. Many trade routes went through Serpukhov, in a local museum among others they name a Great Silk Road. Due to constant enemy attacks, a fortress was constructed in the city.

See [ edit ]

Almost nothing is preserved from the times of the Serpukhov princedom, except for the Red Hill, the remains of the Kremlin on the bank of Nara river. Once monastery walls were 8 m high, now all you can see on the hill are few lonely stones with the remains of loopholes sticking out of the ground. The monastery was taken apart in 1934, and monastery stones were used at the construction of the Moscow subway. Now Troitsky Cathedral (1696) towers on the hill; there is a branch of a Local History museum inside. The exposition is generally devoted to architecture of the city. If you go down the hill from there, it is possible to see the small river Serpeika (regional specialists believe that the form of a channel - a sickle (Russian: serp), and the form of the Cathedral mountain - an ear (Russian: uho) gave name to the city). At a corner of the Soviet and Kalugskaya streets there is a restored church of Nikoly White which was constructed in 1857 on a place of an ancient temple. Going down the Kalugskaya street towards Lenin square, it is possible to glance at the territory of Raspyatsky monastery through a white gate and to approach the dilapidated cathedral of the Crucifixion (1751). Other two monasteries in the city, Vladychny and Vysotsky, are in better condition. In front of the entry of the Vysotsky Monastery there is a viewing platform, from there you can get an outlook on the part of the city on the opposite bank of Nara and located slightly to the left Vladychny Monastery.

Two monasteries, divided by the river, were established almost at the same time: female, Vladychny, by Metropolitan Aleksy in 1360, male, Vysotsky, by Sergy Radonegsky in 1374. In Vysotsky Monastery you can find a five-domed cathedral of the Conception of the Virgin (the end of the 16th century) and Nikolay Chudotvorets church (the beginning of the 17th century), but they are usually closed. To get into the Pokrovskaya church, where services are usually held, you might need to wait in line. The reason of such popularity is an icon called “Undrinkable Bowl”, to which people address their prayers, hoping to recover from alcoholic dependence. To get to the Vladychny Monastery on the opposite bank it is better to use a car. Oldest of the constructions which have been preserved here: dining hall with the tent-like Georgievskaya church (1599) and the Sacred gate with the church of Feodotiy Ankirsky (1599). The towering five-domed Vvedensky Cathedral was constructed in the beginning of the 17th century. Now the monastery is being restored little by little, though, in comparison with Vysotsky monastery, it is in a very dilapidated condition. In the History And Art museum (ph.(4967) 35 26 70, 35 17 53, Chehova, 87) there is an excellent collection of pictures by Shishkin, Savrasov, Ayvazovsky, Repin, Levitan, Polenov and also an admirable collection of European art.
