Problem-solution essays are a common essay type, especially for short essays such as subject exams or IELTS . The page gives information on what they are , how to structure this type of essay, and gives an example problem-solution essay on the topic of obesity and fitness levels.
Problem-solution essays consider the problems of a particular situation, and give solutions to those problems. They are in some ways similar to cause and effect essays , especially in terms of structure (see below). Problem-solution essays are actually a sub-type of another type of essay, which has the following four components:
The 'situation' may be included in the essay prompt, in which case it will not be needed in the main body. If it is needed, it can often be included in the introduction, especially for short essays, as with the example essay below . The 'evaluation' may be included as part of the conclusion (also as in the example below), or omitted altogether, especially for short essays. For these reasons, problem-solution essays are more common than situation-problem-solution-evaluation essays (or SPSE essays).
There are two main ways to structure a problem-solution essay. These are similar to the ways to structure cause and effect essays , namely using a block or a chain structure. For the block structure, all of the problems are listed first, and all of the solutions are listed afterwards. For the chain structure, each problem is followed immediately by the solution to that problem. Both types of structure have their merits. The former is generally clearer, especially for shorter essays, while the latter ensures that any solutions you present relate directly to the problems you have given.
The two types of structure, block and chain , are shown in the diagram below. This is for a short essay, which includes the 'situation' in the introduction and 'evaluation' in the conclusion. A longer essay, for example one of around 1,000 words, with citations , would probably have these two sections as separate paragraphs in the main body.

Below is a problem-solution essay on the topic of obesity and poor fitness . It uses the block structure . Click on the different areas (in the shaded boxes) to highlight the different structural aspects in this essay, i.e. Situation, Problem, Solution, Evaluation. This will highlight not simply the paragraphs, but also (for problems and solutions) the thesis statement and summary , as these repeat the problems and solutions contained in the main body.
Consumption of processed and convenience foods and our dependence on the car have led to an increase in obesity and reduction in the fitness level of the adult population. In some countries, especially industrialized ones, the number of obese people can amount to one third of the population. This is significant as obesity and poor fitness lead to a decrease in life expectancy , and it is therefore important for individuals and governments to work together to tackle this issue and improve their citizens' diet and fitness. Obesity and poor fitness decrease life expectancy. Overweight people are more likely to have serious illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, which can result in premature death. It is well known that regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, which means that those with poor fitness levels are at an increased risk of suffering from those problems. Changes by individuals to their diet and their physical activity can increase life expectancy. There is a reliance today on the consumption of processed foods, which have a high fat and sugar content. By preparing their own foods, and consuming more fruit and vegetables, people could ensure that their diets are healthier and more balanced, which could lead to a reduction in obesity levels. In order to improve fitness levels, people could choose to walk or cycle to work or to the shops rather than taking the car. They could also choose to walk up stairs instead of taking the lift. These simple changes could lead to a significant improvement in fitness levels. Governments could also implement initiatives to improve their citizens' eating and exercise habits. This could be done through education, for example by adding classes to the curriculum about healthy diet and lifestyles. Governments could also do more to encourage their citizens to walk or cycle instead of taking the car, for instance by building more cycle lanes or increasing vehicle taxes. While some might argue that increased taxes are a negative way to solve the problem, it is no different from the high taxes imposed on cigarettes to reduce cigarette consumption. In short, obesity and poor fitness are a significant problem in modern life, leading to lower life expectancy . Individuals and governments can work together to tackle this problem and so improve diet and fitness . Of the solutions suggested, those made by individuals themselves are likely to have more impact, though it is clear that a concerted effort with the government is essential for success. With obesity levels in industrialized and industrializing countries continuing to rise, it is essential that we take action now to deal with this problem.

The problem-solution essay, introduction, lesson summary.
The essay. The bane of all students' existence. How do you begin to write? How do you know what to include? What's a thesis statement anyway, and how do you write one? You may have asked these questions many times throughout your educational career, but helpful answers really depend on what type of essay is needed.
One type is a problem-solution essay , which describes some sort of conflict, challenge or question and then outlines one or more answers or resolutions. These types of essays can be used to inform, which would then involve all possible solutions to the problem. However, they could also be persuasive. In that case, it would outline the problem, and possibly several solutions, but it would argue for one solution above the rest.
Before you begin to write this type of essay, determine your purpose and your target audience. The rest of this lesson describes how to write each part of a problem-solution essay.

Before you even begin to write, you must develop a thesis , which is the one statement that outlines the main argument of an essay. The key to a strong thesis is not merely making a broad statement of your topic, but instead specifically outlining what your essay will cover. Look at the following weak thesis:
You may think this is a decent thesis, as it does give the general topic. However, it does not explain the purpose for writing, nor does it outline where you are going with this idea. Now let's look at this thesis:
This thesis is much stronger. Not only does the reader know what the main problem is, but also what information the rest of the essay will discuss (solutions for individuals and solutions for governments). Overall, having a strong thesis will help you to maintain a clear focus throughout your essay.
Once you have a strong thesis, the next step is to write an introduction paragraph. The introduction is the paragraph that presents your topic and grabs the reader's attention. Since the introduction paragraph plays an important role, you need to be sure to plan an interesting beginning. You can ask a rhetorical question or make a profound statement. You could also state a definition or a short anecdote. Here is an example of a rhetorical question as an introduction strategy.
This type of opening line will instantly draw in your reader. As you continue to write the introduction paragraph, make the problem relatable to your reader. Consider your target audience and be sure to appeal to their interests. Narrow down your topic and lead directly into the thesis statement, which should be near the end of the introduction paragraph or the final sentence of it.
Now that you've introduced your topic and stated your thesis, move on to the body , which is the part of the essay that explains or develops the main topic. The body might be two or three paragraphs, each with a separate main idea that supports the thesis. Using the example thesis for the depletion of the ozone layer, the problem-solution essay would have one body paragraph describing the solutions each individual can do and a second body paragraph on the solutions each government can do.
In general, structure each body paragraph with a transition sentence at the beginning and at the end, introducing the main idea and providing closure accordingly. The middle sentences will explain the idea and provide examples, facts, or supporting details. If you are writing a persuasive essay, be sure to give reasons why one solution is the best option.
The final piece of a problem-solution essay is the conclusion, or the ending paragraph that provides closure to the essay. Conclusion paragraphs are generally structured by restating your thesis, summarizing your main points, and ending with a broad closing statement.
For a problem-solution essay, begin by restating the major problem. Then summarize any solutions you discussed in the body. If the essay is persuasive, summarize why one option is the best over the other solutions. Finally, the last statement needs to bring the essay to a close in some way that will continue to make your reader think about your topic. Here is an example that links back to the sample opening line given earlier.
To review, a problem-solution essay describes some sort of conflict, challenge or question and then outlines one or more answers or resolutions. These can be either informative or persuasive.
When writing one of these essays, first develop a strong thesis , or statement that outlines the main argument of an essay. Be sure to include the main ideas you will cover in the body , which is the part of the essay that explains or develops the main topic. Write two or three body paragraphs according to your specific purpose and topic. Finally, write a conclusion or ending paragraph that provides closure to the essay.

Also known as proposing a solution essay or a problem-solving essay, a problem-solution essay is a piece of academic writing task where the student/writer defines, expounds on, and explores a given problem and its potential solutions. The essay comprises four pertinent parts, including situation, problem, solutions, and evaluation, which can be spread through the three parts of an essay: introduction, body, and concluding paragraphs.
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of an essay structure. Every great essay begins from an idea represented in an essay structure. It is the reason why writing an outline of an essay comes first before eventually writing the essay. There are two main approaches that you can use to present your problem and solution essay. You can either choose to describe the problem, then focus on the solutions or define the problem, then the solution and the various aspects of the solution as shown below . The type of problem solution essay structure you choose depends on the number of solutions you have for the problem.
If a problem has several solutions:
Introduction: Describe the problem
Body 1: One way to solve the problem
Body paragraph 2: Second solution to the problem
Body paragraph 3: Final way to solve the problem
Conclusion paragraph
If a problem has a single solution that can be described in many paragraphs:
Introduction: describe the problem
Body paragraph 1: Describe your solution
Body Paragraph 2: More information about the proposed solution
Body Paragraph 3: More information about the proposed solution
You can also use the chain method of writing an outline when writing the problem solution essay as below
Introduction (background and thesis statement)
Body paragraph 1: Problem 1 + solution
Body paragraph 2: Problem 2 + solution
Body paragraph 3: Problem 3 + solution
Evaluation and conclusion
You can as well adopt the block format of presenting problems and solutions in your essay. Here is how that looks:
Introduction (Background, hook, and thesis statement)
Body paragraph 1: Problems 1, 2, and 3
Body paragraph 2: Solutions 1, 2, and 3
Body paragraph 3: Feasibility of solutions 1, 2, and 3
Knowing how to write a problem solution essay is an integral part of passing any given course or class.
It is a common type of written assignment given to students pursuing different subjects such as education, English, sociology, psychology, nursing, social work, counseling, and name it.
It aims to stimulate society to adopt different innovative, pragmatic, creative, and feasible/sustainable solutions to problems or issues. Currently, the world is grappling with many problems such as climate change, population explosion, human-wildlife conflicts, global warming, crime, organ trafficking, and the global pandemic, which can be subjects for finding a solution.
Writing a strong problem solution essay can be an eye-opener. Here is a stepwise approach on how to write a solution essay that stands out.
Before thinking of writing a problem-solution essay, you need to select a topic that interests you, meets the requirements of the essay prompt/rubric, and allows you to present solutions with the support of facts from credible scholarly sources.
To select a great topic, begin by thinking about the things around you that present as problems that need solutions. As yourself these questions:
With the thoughts in mind, brainstorm about the ideas and note them down. Think of the social systems, financial systems, environment, transport, fashion, psychology, healthcare, corporate workplaces, and science, among other areas. Cast your net widely and evaluate the current debates on issues around the world.
To identify befitting topics, begin by thinking about different groups of people and the potential problems they might have. Some of the groups include the church, the community, a city/town, a state, sports team, clubs, sororities, political class, citizens, patients, teenagers, adolescents, infants, college students, professors, parents, families, males/females, race, cultures, or ethnicities.
The next step is to list potential problems that the people are encountering with the people in mind. In most instances, there might be efforts to solve such issues, although none is working; your new solutions could be an eye-opener and a better approach thereof. Note that problems do not necessarily have to be big; focus on a narrowed problem to get as much credible information and facts when writing the solutions.
As long as it is something that you can convince other people to adopt a solution for or one that can be made better, it befits a problem.
If you are still stuck with choosing a good topic, our list of over 200 problem-solution essay topics and samples can come in handy.
With the topic, you can now write your essay as per either of the structures we had highlighted earlier.
Ensure that the title is well written on the cover page for your problem solution essay depending on the referencing style such as APA, MLA, or Harvard.
The introductory paragraph of your essay should outline the problem. As you describe the problem, also highlight some reasons why the problem has to be solved and write a definitive thesis statement, which should bear your solution.
If the problem is unknown to your audience, explain it in detail to convince them enough. Moreover, if the problem is one that the audience is familiar with, try to create a deeper understanding of its gravity. In both instances, the introduction has to convince the reader that the problem and its corresponding solutions are worthwhile.
If you are wondering how to present a problem in your essay, you can easily do so by narrating a situation, which often happens in the introduction. You can as well spice it further.
Here are some great ways to introduce ideas into your essay or hook your reader:
Using these creative strategies highlighted above, anyone who is interested will read and love your essay.
As usual, the thesis statement comes last in the introductory paragraph. When writing the thesis statement, here are some important tips:
With the introduction done, you need to dive right into developing the body paragraphs. However, just like building a house, you need to have a blueprint of the body paragraphs, which depends on the selected structure.
If you have 1000 words to put up a problem solution essay, you need to have three solid paragraphs that exclusively discuss the solution or its practicality.
Having an outline helps understand the flow of your essay. Here is a great problem solution essay outline:
I. Introduction
II. First Solution
III. Second Solution
III. Third Solution
IV. Conclusion
As you write an excellent problem issue essay, ensure that you use transitional phrases and words such as, for instance, specifically, such us, to illustrate, furthermore, and, moreover, more importantly, indeed, in fact, etc.
Depending on the structure that you have chosen to follow, you have to develop the body of your essay.
Technically speaking, the body paragraphs of your essay bear the solutions to the problem you have identified in the instructions. When focusing on solutions, choose solutions that are:
Although a problem-solution essay is not persuasive or argumentative, you still need to reach a confluence with your audience on certain issues. You need to adopt a persuasive stance to write a winning essay. It is a matter of persuading the audience, who are undecided or lightly opposed to your ideas, to accept your point of view.
As you struggle to find a middle ground, here are some tips to help convince the readers.
With these questions, you should be all set up to write body paragraphs that:
The list above can serve as a vital checklist to ensure that the body paragraphs of your problem issue paper are well developed. Always remember to balance the paragraphs and maintain an idea per paragraph. As well, have enough and relevant transitions from one paragraph to the next one. Collectively, the body paragraphs form 80% of the entire word count of your essay. So, if you are writing a 1000-word problem-issue essay , the body paragraphs should each be 267 words if you are sticking to the five-paragraph essay format . Whatever format you choose, ensure that you convince the reader of the applicability of the solution.
Congratulations for coming this far; not so many people write essays to the conclusion phase. Having done the intro and the body, it is now time to wind yo your essay. In most instances, maintaining the conclusion in a paragraph rather than more paragraph works best.
Your conclusion must have an excellent ending, which clinches your argument and convinces the readers/audience of the best solution.
To write a vivid conclusion of a problem solution essay:
Here are some questions that most people ask about the problem solution essays.
While argumentative essays are basically position papers, they have some element of problem solution papers. In most instances, one has to convince the readers to side with their argument, when you read our guide on how to write an argumentative essay, you will realize that your work as a writer is to let the reader know why they need to adopt a given solution. In this respect, the essays are similar in that both problem solution essays and argumentative essays:
Nevertheless, problem solution essays are exclusively focused on giving detailed plans for solving a problem. It also argues for a specific set of actions like what should be done, how it will be done, why it will work, its practicality, its cost-effectiveness, its sustainability, and many other aspects.
As indicated above, you need to begin by using an essay hook. This can be a statistic, quote, fact, or statement. The following sentences should then introduce your problem : define it, specify its gravity, and explore the obsolete solutions in place. Finally, have a thesis statement that documents your proposed solutions. It is the only best way to begin a solution essay.
Not at all, unless the instructions on the essay prompt require you to reflect on a problem and its solutions. Otherwise, a problem solution essay is written in the third person and active voice.
When writing essays, the end justifies the means. However much you note the points to use in your essay, writing a perfect essay, in the end, is all that matters. Yes, you can use notes, charts, or mind maps to sketch out your ideas. It helps you put everything to its place when writing, which is great.
There are many ways to solve a problem. Here are a few suggestions we have:
For you to propose solutions in such a manner, you need to research the problem and solutions that have worked or flopped elsewhere. You can find something that flopped or worked elsewhere, and then, given the conditions, you adapt it to your situation.
A problem solution essay can be anything between 400 words and 3000 words.
It can either be a page, two pages, three pages, or ten pages and above. In our experience, most problem solution essays are either 500 words, 900 words, or 1000 words long.
To determine the appropriate length of the essay, consult with your professor if it is not indicated in the essay prompt.
Technically, a problem solution essay can take the 5-paragraph approach. However, if you have a lengthy paper, break the paragraphs into 150 words each until the word count is over. The introduction and the conclusion are always 10% of the word count each, which means that 80% of the word count should be spread across the body paragraphs.

Questions to consider:
When we’re solving a problem, whether at work, school, or home, we are being asked to perform multiple, often complex, tasks. The most effective problem-solving approach includes some variation of the following steps:
Determining the best approach to any given problem and generating more than one possible solution to the problem constitutes the complicated process of problem-solving. People who are good at these skills are highly marketable because many jobs consist of a series of problems that need to be solved for production, services, goods, and sales to continue smoothly.
Think about what happens when a worker at your favorite coffee shop slips on a wet spot behind the counter, dropping several drinks she just prepared. One problem is the employee may be hurt, in need of attention, and probably embarrassed; another problem is that several customers do not have the drinks they were waiting for; and another problem is that stopping production of drinks (to care for the hurt worker, to clean up her spilled drinks, to make new drinks) causes the line at the cash register to back up. A good manager has to juggle all of these elements to resolve the situation as quickly and efficiently as possible. That resolution and return to standard operations doesn’t happen without a great deal of thinking: prioritizing needs, shifting other workers off one station onto another temporarily, and dealing with all the people involved, from the injured worker to the impatient patrons.
Faced with a problem-solving opportunity, you must assess the skills you will need to create solutions. Problem-solving can involve many different types of thinking.
What sort of thinking do you imagine initially helped in the following scenarios? How would the other types of thinking come into resolving these problems? Write a one- to two-sentence rationale on scrap paper or notepad that explains why you chose the answers to the questions below.
GENERATING MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS
Why do you think it is important to provide multiple solutions when you’re going through the steps to solve problems? Typically, you’ll end up only using one solution at a time, so why expend the extra energy to create alternatives? If you planned a wonderful trip to Europe and had all the sites you want to see planned out and reservations made, you would think that your problem-solving and organizational skills had quite a workout. But what if when you arrived, the country you’re visiting is enmeshed in a public transportation strike experts predict will last several weeks if not longer? A back-up plan would have helped you contemplate alternatives you could substitute for the original plans. You certainly cannot predict every possible contingency—sick children, weather delays, economic downfalls—but you can be prepared for unexpected issues to come up and adapt more easily if you plan for multiple solutions.Write out at least two possible solutions to these dilemmas:
Providing more than one solution to a problem gives people options. You may not need several options, but having more than one solution will allow you to feel more in control and part of the problem-solving process.
When someone’s purpose is to describe a problem and evaluate possible solutions, they will write a problem solving essay. In academic writing, the problem solving essay is very common and useful. For example, students would use it in a ecological class if they were asked to discuss solutions to the problem of endangered species. Students also can write this type of essay in an computer science class if they needed to suggest some ways to solve the inefficient performance of a system.
Once someone has decided to write a problem solving essay, there are several techniques should be pay attention. First, he/she should carefully investigate if a problem exists and describe the problem clearly. While describing a statement of problem, he/she should mentions why it is serious . Second, the solutions recommended for the problem should be convincing and effective. They must prove his viewpoint by supporting it with persuasive facts and evidences . Finally, the essay must be able to influence the readers that the proposed solutions are practical and valuable.
