This text retells the story in Luke 2:22–39, usually called the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, which took place forty days after his birth. Mary, Joseph, and the Christ-child encounter there two devout people, Anna and Simeon, who identify this baby as the promised Messiah.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.
The Greeting
The president greets the people
The Lord of glory be with you. The Lord bless you.
The Lord be with you All and also with you.
The president introduces the day’s liturgy
Dear friends, forty days ago we celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we recall the day on which he was presented in the Temple, when he was offered to the Father and shown to his people. As a sign of his coming among us, his mother was purified, as we now come to him for cleansing. In their old age Simeon and Anna recognized him as their Lord, as we today sing of his glory. In this eucharist,we celebrate both the joy of his coming and his searching judgement, looking back to the day of his birth and forward to the coming days of his passion.
Prayers of Penitence occur later in the service.
The Gloria in Excelsis may be used
Gloria in Excelsis
All Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
The Collect
The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words
Let us pray that we may know and share the light of Christ.
Silence is kept.
King of kings and Lord of lords, whose faithful servant Charles prayed for those who persecuted him and died in the living hope of your eternal kingdom: grant us by your grace so to follow his example that we may love and bless our enemies, through the intercession of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
First Reading
Ecclesiasticus 2.12-17
12 Woe to timid hearts and to slack hands, and to the sinner who walks a double path! 13 Woe to the faint-hearted who have no trust! Therefore they will have no shelter. 14 Woe to you who have lost your nerve! What will you do when the Lord’s reckoning comes? 15 Those who fear the Lord do not disobey his words, and those who love him keep his ways. 16 Those who fear the Lord seek to please him, and those who love him are filled with his law. 17 Those who fear the Lord prepare their hearts, and humble themselves before him.
At the end the reader may say
This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.
Refrain: You, Lord, are a shield about me.
1 Lord, how many are my adversaries; ♦ many are they who rise up against me.
2 Many are they who say to my soul, ♦ ‘There is no help for you in your God.’ R
3 But you, Lord, are a shield about me; ♦ you are my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
4 When I cry aloud to the Lord, ♦ he will answer me from his holy hill;
5 I lie down and sleep and rise again, ♦ because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not be afraid of hordes of the peoples ♦ that have set themselves against me all around. R
7 Rise up, O Lord, and deliver me, O my God, ♦ for you strike all my enemies on the cheek and break the teeth of the wicked.
8 Salvation belongs to the Lord: ♦ may your blessing be upon your people.
Shield us, Lord, from all evil, and lift us from apathy and despair, that even when we are terrified, we may trust your power to save; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Second Reading
1 Timothy 6.12-16
12 Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will bring about at the right time – he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. 16 It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.
Hymn or song
Gospel reading.
This acclamation may herald the Gospel reading
Today the Lord is presented in the Temple in substance of our mortal nature.
Today the Blessed Virgin comes to be purified in accordance with the law.
Today old Simeon proclaims Christ as the light of the nations and the glory of Israel.
Alleluia! Praise to Christ, the Light of the world!
When the Gospel is announced the reader says
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N . All Glory to you, O Lord.
Matthew 10.16-22
16 ‘See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. 19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 22 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.
The president says
Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
An authorized translation of the Nicene Creed is used.
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers of Intercession
Biddings may be given before the Prayers of Intercession, which are then said without interpolation.
Let us pray to the Father through Christ our light and life.
Father, your Christ is acclaimed as the glory of Israel: look in mercy on your Church, sharing his light.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Father, your Christ in the Temple brings judgement on the world: look in mercy on the nations who long for his justice.
Father, your Christ, who was rich, for our sake became poor: look in mercy the needy, suffering with him.
Father, your Christ is the one in whom faithful servants find their peace: look in mercy on the departed, that they may see your salvation.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Father, your Christ is the one destined to be rejected: look in mercy on us as we turn towards his passion.
Lord God, you kept faith with Simeon and Anna, and showed them the infant King. Give us grace to trust your promises, and the patience to wait for their fulfilment; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayers of Penitence
Hear the words of our Saviour Jesus Christ: ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me shall never walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.’ Let us therefore bring our sins into his light and confess them in penitence and faith. cf John 8.12
All Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen.
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you , pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.
In the tender mercy of our God the dayspring from on high has broken upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. cf Luke 1.78,79
The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you.
These words may be added
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
All may exchange a sign of peace.
Preparation of the Table
Taking of the bread and wine.
A hymn may be sung.
The gifts of the people may be gathered and presented.
The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it.
Father, in Christ there has sprung up a light for the righteous; accept the gifts we bring before you and grant that Christ may shine in us to the praise and glory of your name. All Amen.
The president takes the bread and wine.
The Eucharistic Prayer
The president uses one of the authorized Eucharistic Prayers with a Proper Preface of the incarnation or one of the following
And now we give you thanks because, by appearing in the temple, he comes near to us in judgement; the Word made flesh searches the hearts of all your people and brings to light the brightness of your splendour.
And now we give you things because your eternal Word took our nature upon him in the womb of Mary the Virgin. The sword of sorrow pierced her heart when he was lifted high on the cross, and by his sacrifice made our peace with you.
It is indeed right and good, always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ, who is one with you from all eternity. For on this day he appeared in the temple in substance of our flesh to come near to us in judgement. He searches the hearts of all your people and brings to light the image of your splendour. Your servant Simeon acclaimed him as the light to lighten the nations while Anna spoke of him to all who looked for your redemption. Destined for the falling and rising of many, he was lifted high upon the cross and a sword of sorrow pierced his mother’s heart when by his sacrifice he made our peace with you. And now we rejoice and glorify your name that we, too, have seen your salvation and join with angels and archangels in their unending hymn of praise:
The Lord’s Prayer
Believing the promises of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray
All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Believing the promises of God, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
The president breaks the consecrated bread.
We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. All God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life.
The Agnus Dei may be used as the bread is broken.
All Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.
Giving of Communion
The president says this or another invitation to communion
God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. All Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The Prayer of Humble Access may be used
The president and people receive communion.
Authorized words of distribution are used and the communicant replies
During the distribution hymns and anthems may be sung.
Any consecrated bread and wine which is not required for purposes of communion is consumed at the end of the distribution or after the service.
A hymn may be sung while the candles are lit.
Lord God, the springing source of everlasting light, pour into the hearts of your faithful people the brilliance of your eternal splendour, that we, who by these kindling flames light up this temple to your glory, may have the darkness of our souls dispelled, and so be counted worthy to stand before you in that eternal city where you live and reign, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.
The ministers and people go in procession to the font, or to the door of the church, or to another suitable place. As they process they sing the Nunc dimittis in this form, the form in The Book of Common Prayer or in another suitable version
All A light to lighten the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace : your word has been fulfilled. All A light to lighten the nations and the glory of your people Israel. My own eyes have seen the salvation : which you have prepared in the sight of every people. All A light to lighten the nations and the glory of your people Israel. A light to reveal you to the nations : and the glory of your people Israel. All A light to lighten the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Luke 2.29-32 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. All Amen. All A light to lighten the nations and the glory of your people Israel.
1 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace : according to thy word.
2 For mine eyes have seen : thy salvation;
3 Which thou hast prepared : before the face of all people;
4 To be a light to lighten the Gentiles : and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Luke 2.29-32
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.
Final Responsory
The president says Father, here we bring to an end our celebration of the Saviour’s birth. All Help us, in whom he has been born, to live his life that has no end. Here we have offered the Church’s sacrifice of praise. All Help us, who have received the bread of life, to be thankful for your gift. Here we have rejoiced with faithful Simeon and Anna. All Help us, who have found the Lord in his temple, to trust in your eternal promises. Here we have greeted the light of the world. All Help us, who extinguish [bear] these candles, never to forsake the light of Christ. Here we stand near the place of baptism. All Help us, who are marked with the cross, to share the Lord’s death and resurrection. Here we turn from Christ’s birth to his passion. All Help us, for whom Lent is near, to enter deeply into the Easter mystery. Here we bless one another in your name. All Help us, who now go in peace, to shine with your light in the world. Thanks be to God. Amen.

All [Blessed be God for ever.] As we bear your light, may our lips never cease to sing your praise. All [Blessed be God for ever.] Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be God for ever.
The ministers and people go in procession to the font, or to the door of the church, or to another suitable place. A large cross may be placed there. As they process they sing the Nunc dimittis or another song or hymn.
Father,we have sung your praise with shepherds and angels: may Christ be born in our hearts today. All Praise to Christ our light. We have shared in the joy of Simeon and Anna; help us, like them, to trust your word. All Praise to Christ our light. We have greeted Jesus, the light of the world; may we be filled with the light of your love. All Praise to Christ our light.
We stand near the place of new birth. All Let us shine with the light of your love. We turn from the crib to the cross. All Let us shine with the light of your love. We go to carry his light. All Let us shine with the light of your love. Thanks be to God.
¶ Candlemas Procession earlier in the Service
If the procession takes place earlier in the service, the congregation assembles in a convenient place. Candles are distributed before the procession, which may take place at the beginning or before the reading of the Gospel.
May the light and peace of Jesus Christ our Lord be with you. All The Lord bless you.
A hymn or chant may be sung at the lighting of the candles, and this acclamation may be made
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe. You make our darkness to be light. For with you is the well of life and in your light shall we see light. All Blessed be God for ever. The president blesses the candles, saying Lord God, the springing source of everlasting light, pour into the hearts of your faithful people the brilliance of your eternal splendour, that we, who by these kindling flames light up this temple to your glory, may have the darkness of our souls dispelled, and so be counted worthy to stand before you in that eternal city where you live and reign, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.
Before the procession these responses may be used
We wait for your loving-kindness, O Lord, All in the midst of your temple. Open to us the gates of righteousness, All that we may enter and give thanks to the Lord . God is the Lord who has shown us light. All Let us offer in his dwelling an oblation with great gladness.
At the procession a hymn or canticle is sung. At the start of the service this may be the Gloria in excelsis. If the procession is made before the Gospel, the hymn ‘Hail to the Lord who comes’ is appropriate. Nunc dimittis is more suitable when the procession is made at the end of the service.
When the procession has taken place earlier in the service, then at the end a hymn may be sung, or the Nunc dimittis may be used.
¶ After Communion
The service concludes
Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna, who lived to welcome the Messiah: may we, who have received these gifts beyond words, prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he comes to bring us to eternal life; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. All Amen.
All We thank you, Lord, that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all peoples. Amen.
The Blessing
Christ, whose glory fills the skies, fill you with radiance and scatter the darkness from your path. Amen. Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, gladden your eyes and warm your heart. Amen. Christ, the Dayspring from on high, draw near to guide your feet into the way of peace. Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
A minister says
Go in the light and peace of Christ. All Thanks be to God.
The ministers and people depart.

Malachi 3.1-5; Psalm 24 (or 24.7-end); Hebrews 2.14-end; Luke 2.22-40
Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple is also known by other names - the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Candlemas. Three titles (with their hinterland of tradition, and doctrinal development) gesture towards the complexity of the event recorded in Luke's Gospel (Luke 2.22-40). Luke compresses into the visit of Mary and Joseph to the Temple, with their baby son, the statutory purification of the mother, the symbolic ransom of the firstborn (Exodus 13.2), and the dedication of a child to the Lord's service (echoes of Samuel are probably not accidental). The luminous treatment of this dense material turns narrative into prophecy, and dramatic irony.
So Mary and Joseph offer the sacrifice prescribed for those unable to afford a lamb (Leviticus 12.8), but they have brought with them the Lamb of God (John 1.29-30). For John, this is the Passover lamb, whose blood marks God's people for liberation. Luke's treatment will suggest that this firstborn child is offered to ransom all of God's later children (Hebrews 1.2 and 1.6; also Romans 8.29, Colossians 1.15 and 18). Simeon now makes his entry, his greeting confirming that the child is a sign of salvation, "a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel" (Luke 2.32; Isaiah 49.5-6). Perhaps Luke allows himself a little wordplay, associating Simeon's name (Greek: Sumeōn) with the Greek word for "sign" (sēmeion).
Artistic representations fix Simeon in our imaginations as a high-priestly figure, gorgeously robed and majestically bearded. This is not what Luke tells us. All we know about Simeon, is that he is an inhabitant of Jerusalem who exemplifies the faithfulness of waiting. A lifetime of longing and praying for "the consolation of Israel" (Luke 2.25) is being concluded as the Spirit guides him to the Temple. Yet his words to Mary (Luke 2.35), still digesting the testimony of the shepherds (Luke 2.8-19), are stark. It is left to Anna, the model of devoted worship, to restore a note of joy, praising God, and excitedly sharing the news of the child with other visitors to the Temple (Luke 2.38). Once again, the Evangelist seems to be at play, his earlier reference to the birth of Samuel (Luke 1.46-55; 1 Samuel 2.1-10) completed here, with the appearance of another [H]anna[h] to greet and encourage this mother of a much greater son.
But greatness is necessarily deferred. The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews explains that Christ did not come "to help angels but the descendants of Abraham" (Hebrews 2.16) and, for that reason, "had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect" (Hebrews 2.17). The "Lord" who will "suddenly come to his temple" and purify the corruption of the priestly order (Malachi 3.1) learns first to be human, before assuming the role of high priest and judge. And this has given generations of Christians confidence to pray that, as God's "beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh", so they also "may be presented to [God] with pure and clean hearts" (Collect of the Day).
This great movement from humility to glory, from humanity to divinity, is captured exquisitely by the 19th-century hymnographer, John Ellerton (1826-93) in his Candlemas hymn, "Hail to the Lord who comes, comes to his temple gate" (see Psalm 24.7-10). The hymn draws on all the human emotion in the presentation scene: the young mother with her first child; Joseph overawed; Simeon holding up the baby to proclaim him "the glory of all lands" as they stand by, anxious in case the old man drops him. The fourth verse hails "the great First-born" and hints that Ellerton had recognised another connection. Later in Luke's Gospel, the newborn Lord returns to his Temple city (Luke 19.28-40; see also Matthew 21.1-11, Mark 11.1-10, John 12.12-19). This time, he is acclaimed by shouting crowds, but he has come to die. The liturgical provision for the Presentation marks this eloquently, as candles are extinguished, and the Church prepares for Lent and Passiontide (Common Worship: Times and Seasons):
Hail to the great First-born,
Whose ransom-price they pay!
The Son before all worlds,
The Child of man to-day,
That he might ransom us
Who still in bondage lay.

The Presentation of Our Lord: Candlemas
Ancient Jewish law required that, following the birth of a firstborn male child, the mother must come to the temple after 40 days for purification and for presentation of the child to the Lord. The presentation of Mary's child, however, was different from most. This was the Christ Child, Jesus, the Savior, the Messiah who had been promised.
