Do you need to earn PDUs to maintain your PMI certification? You’re in the right place!

In this article, we’ll cover what you need to know about the different categories of PDUs and how many you need to get, plus some simple and free ways to earn PDUs in 2024.

There are also some further suggestions that take a bit more effort but are equally worthwhile in case you’ve got more time and energy to spare for your professional development.

What is a PDU ?

PDUs are professional development units. They are a measure of how much professional, continuous learning you have done.

PDUs are measured in hours. You can claim them in 15 minute chunks if you spend part of an hour on professional development.

How many PDUs do I need?

If you hold a PMP ® , PgMP ® , PfMP ® or PMI-PBA ® certification, you need to earn 60 PDUs every three years.

That can be timed as 20 PDUs every year or 60 PDUs in the last 3 months of the three year cycle as you panic and try to get them all in before your certification expires.

If you hold a PMI-ACP ® , PMI-RMP ® , PMI-SP ® certification, you need to earn 30 PDUs in a three-year cycle.

If you hold a CAPM ® certificate, you need to earn 15 PDUs every three years.

The PDUs for every certification need to be made up of education undertaken in specific areas. More on that in a minute.

The tables below shows the different number of PDUs required for each certificate.

How to maintain multiple PMI certifications

Did you realize that if you’ve got multiple certifications, your PDU activity can count for each one?

That’s a huge bonus! You don’t have to earn brand new PDUs for each certification. Simply do some professional development that earns you credit across your portfolio of certificates.

Make your PDUs do double duty supporting you for all your credentials!

Remember to report PDUs against all your relevant certificates in the CCR.

OK, now we’ve got that out of the way, let’s look at how you can boost your PDU count as quickly and easily as possible.

15 Easy ways to earn PDUs

Here are some simple ways to earn PDUs for your PMI re-certification cycle. Many of these are free ways to get PDUs. Others are simple to do but come with a cost. There are loads of eligible activities to choose from, so let’s get started!

10 Easy Ways to Earn PDUs 1

1. Do your job

Did you notice in the tables above that you can earn PDUs simply for doing your job? That’s got to be the easiest way to get started on your PDU total.

If you are working in any kind of project delivery role, PMO role, or similar in any industry, you can count some of your professional service working hours towards the maximum requirements for Giving Back.

You can use a copy of your job description as part of your evidence for this type of PDU claim.

You can’t claim a lot this way, so the best approach is to learn how to find time for continuous development as part of your regular schedule.

2. Claim for mentoring

Whether you mentor others or are being mentored, you can claim that time as it is a structured professional discussion. You are working as a practitioner, so you’ve definitely got something to share with others.

Don’t have a mentor? I can help with that!

More formal coaching arrangements also work – record the hours you spend coaching others or receiving coaching. Talk to your manager to find out what options are available to you funded by your company.

3. Give a presentation at work

If you take a training course or attend a webinar, offer to give a 15-minute summary version to your team at the next team meeting. That’s 0.25 PDUs right there for knowledge sharing! Plus any time it takes you to prepare the presentation.

This is a simple way of earning PDUs for CAPM as it doesn’t require anything special to make happen.

4. Claim pre-course work and homework

If you are doing an online or in-person training course, you’ll probably be sent some pre-course work or assignments to do outside of class time.

You can claim the time you spend on reviewing the course material as self-directed learning. That’s on top of the hours you spend actually in the course itself – more on that later.

5. Listen to The PDU Podcast

This is honestly the easiest way to earn those PDUs. Sign up for The PDU Podcast . Get 60 relevant PDUs delivered to your device and watch them when you need them. Get your PDU certificate and enter the info into the CCR system.

It’s easy because then you’ve got all the PDUs you need for the whole renewal cycle at a low price per PDU , so you can rest easy. Also, you get a breakdown of exactly which webinars cover what Talent Triangle areas, so you don’t have to worry about working out what episode aligns to which Education section.

There are various different products depending on how many PDUs you need. I’ve used this product, listened to many of the podcast episodes and even been in some of the episodes! From my experience, this is a great, reliable way to earn PDUs backed up with excellent customer service.

Below you can see the options and choose the best product for your needs. Personally, I’m a fan of the Power Skills package because earning Power Skills PDUs is trickier than getting the Ways of Working PDUs.

6. Go to a (relevant) meeting

You don’t have to be a PMI member to go to a Chapter meeting. And with more and more Chapters offering webinars online, you may find it easier than ever to get to an event.

Typically, PMI will only let you claim 1-2 PDUs for organization meetings per certification renewal cycle, so review the upcoming calendar for your local Chapter and see what events are coming up. Choose something that sounds interesting!

Do check first if there is a fee: some Chapters offer events free to members and charge non-members. You might decide it’s worth joining the Chapter if the events look good enough.

7. Take a course

The easiest way to earn a lot of PDUs in one go is to take a class. This is a particularly good option if you hold more than one certification because you can break up the PDUs and use them to count towards the various re-certification requirements.

Online, self-paced video courses are good because you can fit them in around your work responsibilities, but any project management training will count.

If you don’t know where to start, grab a PDU bundle from Brain Sensei . That gives you a curated selection of PDUs from across the Talent Triangle areas. If you go for the 60 PDU bundle, that could be all your requirements covered for the period.

Grab a bundle of 15, 30 or 60 PDUs tailored to topics like stakeholder engagement, team performance, agile, value delivery or adaptive planning.

In fact, any relevant management or leadership or business skills training counts. I have taken the IBM Project Management Certificate but also the Google Digital Marketing certificate, a coaching course and some AI training — it all counts.

I use the Coursera app on my iPad so I can study on the go and it lets you download video lessons so you can work even when you don’t have an internet connection. Check out my favorite project management courses on Coursera .

I can also personally recommend the UVA Darden course if you want to improve your project planning, scheduling and tracking.

Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management

A great short course from UVA Darden covering the basics at a good level. Best for project managers with some experience who want to improve their planning and project control.

If you prefer in-person learning, look into what your local community college is offering as evening classes or weekend study.

Membership of professional bodies normally comes with a journal or magazine. You can claim time for reading that, and heck, even this website!

Books also count, and there are some excellent project management books out there.

Just remember to write down what you learned and what you read, so you have an evidence log if you need to submit more information to PMI.

9. Watch a webinar

Get started with the webinars here:

  • Tips for managing multiple projects
  • What it takes to be a successful project manager
  • Practical strategies for managing your work

That’s at least a couple of free PDUs for you!

Online video is a simple way to learn new things, and it’s something you can fit into your lunch break at work. It’s also a good way to boost your leadership skills, as you’ll often find live and on-demand webinars covering leadership topics.

10. Contribute to a wiki

If you already have a Wikipedia login, you can start at the biggest wiki in the world and contribute your project management knowledge to that.

Or go small and contribute to the projectmanagement.com wiki, sharing what you know.

Perhaps you even have an in-house wiki for your team – that counts too.

11. Host a lunch and learn session

One of my favorite things to do at work was hosting the lunch and learn sessions. I curated a series of webinars over about a year. Project delivery professionals from all over the business joined the webinars (or watched the replays) over lunchtime.

It was surprisingly easy to organize in-house. You don’t need external speakers. Ask for volunteers to talk about what they learned on a project, or to do a deep-dive into something that went well (or not).

Or simply pull up an article on your favorite PM website, or a case study in a magazine and talk about what you would do in that situation.

I emailed the heads of departments about my lunchtime webinars and asked them to forward my message on. Then anyone who wanted to join the webinars could. I simply sent out a calendar invite to the people on the list.

You can claim PDUs for organizing the event and also speaking at it.

12. Spend time on ProjectManagement.com

You can earn PDUs for contributing to the community or watching videos . ProjectManagement.com is a website owned by PMI, and I think of it like the community wing. It’s packed with discussions, blogs, and other types of user-generated content, and it has a vast library of user-submitted templates.

There’s a huge selection of project management topics to browse.

Create content and join in! Write a blog post, contribute to a discussion, take a poll or a quiz, and start counting your hours.

13. Volunteer

Personally, I don’t think that volunteering is an easy way to earn PDUs. It’s a lot of work and while it’s very rewarding, it’s not something to commit to without understanding what it involves.

Talk to your local project management or business organization first and see what volunteer opportunities there are. It’s free – and volunteer work will often get you into big events for free – but it’s not always ‘easy’.

However, if you have plenty of free time and live or work close to where your local Chapter hosts meetings, then it might be an easier option for you. It’s also a great way to build a network of colleagues and make friends in the profession.

You’ll also get experience in different types of project and event management which might open doors in your career later.

14. Take a PMI e-learning course

PMI have some video-on-demand learning courses, including some that are for free, like this introduction to Agile course.

PMI changes its offerings all the time (goodbye, PMI Edge) and right now there are 2 free courses on the PMI website that are going to give you PDUs: the PMI Kickoff badges.

An excellent free beginners project management course that comes in Agile and Predictive versions. Perfect for accidental project managers and people needing a structured approach to project work for the first time.

Kickoff from PMI

If you want a simple way to quickly earn PDUs, paying for them is definitely an easy route and there are plenty of paid training options like the Wicked Problem Solving course which is brilliant.

15. Study for your next certificate

If you are already in the progress of studying for another certification or project management exam, that study time counts.

For example, if you study for the PMI-ACP using my recommended PMI-ACP prep course , you can record the time you spend on learning towards your PDUs for other certifications – as long as the content studied meets the requirements.

Study time doesn’t only have to be for PMI certificates. You could count training towards Scrum Master or other industry certificates too.

15 easy ways to earn PDUs

Extra ideas for earning PDUs

Finally, here are a couple of extra ideas for earning PDUs. These ones don’t count in my book as ‘easy’ but they are certainly doable if you put the effort in.

You can create new content . That’s anything from an article in your company newsletter (as long as it is about something to do with project management) through to delivering a keynote speech or writing a book.

The easiest way to get started is to write some articles and share them on LinkedIn. This is a simple way to show your project management skills on LinkedIn for future employers to see.

I don’t think that creating content for the project management community is particularly easy either, especially if you are new to putting yourself and your ideas out there. But if you want to improve your public speaking or corporate writing skills, then it’s definitely something you could do.

How to claim PDUs

All PDU claims are done via the CCRS system on the PMI website. Log on there and input your details. If you’ve undertaken some learning with a recognized PMI firm, they will give you a certificate or code to enter into the system.

How long are PDUs valid?

PDUs are valid for the re-certification cycle you earned them in (every 3 years). Once you have claimed the PDU for a re-certification cycle, you need to earn new ones to cover you for the next 3 years.

How many hours is a PDU?

A PDU equals one hour of professional development time. It can be spend doing a variety of learning activities. You can also claim PDUs in 15 minute increments if your learning timeslot goes over one hour e.g. claim 1.75 PDUs for a webinar that was 1 hour 45 minutes long.

How can I get free PDUs?

You can definitely get free PDUs for PMP renewal this year. Earn free PDUs from doing your job, listening to podcast episodes, volunteering, reading relevant materials and contributing to the profession, amongst other ways.

Ready to start collecting those PDUs to maintain your active status? Here are your next steps:

  • Download the CCR Handbook and familiarize yourself with the requirements.
  • Start collecting supporting documentation, PDU claim codes and evidence to back up your certification renewal.
  • Sign up to The PDU Podcast
  • Register on ProjectManagement.com and put 30 minutes per month in your diary to contribute to the discussions, read the content etc

10 Easy Ways to Get PDUs & Stay PMI Certified

ProjectManager

A project manager is a professional. And, like any professional, if you take your profession, your career and yourself seriously, you’ll undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

What is a PDU?

If you hold a qualification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) like PMP (Project Management Professional) or PMI-ACP (PMI Agile Certified Professional), CPD is mandatory. Without it, your project management certification will expire. The PMI measures CPD in Professional Development Units, or PDUs.

A PDU is a one-hour block of time that you spend developing your professional expertise. The principle ways to do this are by learning, teaching others, or volunteering. Earning PDUs keeps you up refreshed and curent when it comes to project management tools , techniques and methodologies.

PMI’s PDU Requirements

Some PMI certifications require you to earn a minimum number of PDUs over a three-year cycle. For example:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) requires 60 PDUs; 20 per year.
  • Agile Certified Professional (PMI-ACP) requires 30 PDUs; 10 per year.

In addition, PMI requires you to align your PDUs to the PMI Talent Triangle. You can find the precise rules on the PMI website .

Two Types of PMI PDUs

The PMI recognizes two types of PDUs:

  • Education PDUs, which are gained by learning about project management topics
  • Giving back PDUs, which are gained by contributing to the profession

Let’s look at each of these in turn, to see the rules PMI applies, and the different “easy” ways to earn your PDUs.

Good Practice in Accumulating PDUs

Before we look at where to get them, I want to highlight good practice for a professional. The core idea behind PDUs is continuing professional development, not last-minute-cram-in-the-points professional development.

Build a plan at the start of the year to develop yourself professionally. And aim to meet the minimum requirements for maintaining whatever certification you have.

I’m also a great believer in balance. So spread your CPD broadly across the different categories. The exception is when you have a deliberate strategy to learn a new skill-set. In this case, your PDUs are likely to follow that direction. But remember, over a three-year period, the balance does need to meet the PMI’s minimums in each area. Download the PMI’s policy document here .

PDUs in Receiver Mode: Education PDUs

Education PDUs need to be balanced across the three sides of the PMI Talent Triangle:

  • Strategic and Business Management

You’ll need a minimum of 8 PDUs in each, and a total minimum of:

  • 35 Education PDUs over three years, to maintain PMP, PgMP, PfMP, PMI-PBA qualifications
  • 18 Education PDUs over three years, to maintain PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP qualifications

Where to get Your Education PDUs

Pretty much any training course will give you PDUs, although if you get it from the PMI or from a PMI Registered Education Provider (REP), your PDUs will be pre-approved. Otherwise, you’ll need to self-certify. These are then subject to potential audit by PMI. This includes, by the way, my own online training .

PMI also suggests a wealth of other sources, including:

  • PMI professional meetings
  • Online Digital Sources
  • Informal learning like mentoring or ‘lunch and learn’ type events.

Five Easy Ways to Get Education PDUs

1. Blog Articles Plus one for this article and others here at ProjectManager . Yes, reading blog articles can get you PDUs. You’ll need to keep a record and make an honest estimate of your reading time. I recommend you start a CPD or PDU log: a spreadsheet is ideal. This article (at around 1,500 words) will take an average reader 5 to 6 minutes to read. So, one article a week, and that’s 4 PDUs in the bag at the end of the year.

ProjectManager also offers award-winning project management software with Gantt charts, kanban boards, task lists and project reporting. Start a free 30-day trial here.

2. Videos Do you prefer to watch? (Yes, fellow fans, Being There is a favorite film of mine too). Then there are a few excellent YouTube Channels, of which my favorites both publish new videos weekly—including training videos by ProjectManager .

3. Podcasts On the same theme, for listening, there are numerous podcasts—most of which are free. Many of these allow you to hear interviews full of advice and experience with top PMs.

It’s worth mentioning that Cornelius Fichtner hosts a prerecorded set of podcasts called the PDU Podcast, which has been designed to give you all the education PDUs you need to maintain your PMP. There’s a three-year cycle, that you can buy as a monthly subscription or in yearly chunks.

4. Workplace Learning Most workplaces offer training or informal learning opportunities. Make the best possible use of it. Record it on your PDU spreadsheet and allocate portions to the three Talent Triangle subject areas. Be honest—conservative even. If it’s a six-hour course on presentation skills, ask yourself how much of it really contributes to your project management expertise.

 5. PMI Learning Opportunities If you are a PMP, then you are a member of the PMI. And this means you have access to lots of free opportunities. My top recommendations are:

  • Join the community . Read the articles, attend the webinars and engage in discussions
  • Make use of your local PMI chapter. Attend their events and even see if your employer will fund trips to PMI events and conferences .

PDUs in Active Mode: Giving Back PDUs

Contributing to the development of your profession is a magnificent way to earn PDUs. You will not only give, but receive, in the form of developing your own knowledge and skills. The PMI rules allow:

  • A maximum of 25 PDUs over three years from giving back, to maintain PMP, PgMP, PfMP, PMI-PBA qualifications
  • A maximum of 12 PDUs over three years from giving back, to maintain PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP qualifications

And the best thing is number 6 below.

6. Working as a Professional You can claim up to eight and four PDUs respectively for these clusters of qualifications, for doing your job as a project manager. As long as your role is relevant to your certification, turning up at work will earn you PDUs.

PMI offers four more routes to gaining Giving Back PDUs:

  • Creating Content – articles, webinars, videos
  • Giving a Presentation – at work, at a PMI chapter or for a community group
  • Sharing Knowledge – passing on the benefit of your experience
  • Volunteering – at PMI

Four more Easy Ways to Get Giving Back PDUs

7. Write a Blog article For most people, starting your own blog is too big of a commitment. But many blogs accept articles, and the best one to start with is one we’ve mentioned already, the PMI’s com community.

8. Give a Podcast Interview There’s no rule that says the content you create must be written, nor that the presentation you give must be live. But again, offering live webinars or starting a YouTube Channel may be too much for you. But there are plenty of podcasts out there that are always looking for working project managers with a good story to tell. Listen to a few and approach ones that you think have an audience that would enjoy your project management story or point of view.

9. Volunteering Starts Near Home Your local PMI chapter is probably the easiest place to start with volunteering for the PMI. And it has the added bonus of hooking you into a network of professionals in your area. You’ll be able to learn from them, and they may be able to help you advance your career. Plus, when you attend the meetings, that’s even more points (see 5, above).

10. Help out more Junior Colleagues You have your qualifications. Others may not. Mentoring more junior colleagues in your workplace (or through your local PMI Chapter) is a brilliant way to pay your professional dues forward. Plus, it will doubtless reward you emotionally and challenge you intellectually. And that latter point is clearly one of the reasons it will earn you PDUs

There’s so Much You Can Do

There are so many options that don’t take you far out of your way nor cost you any significant sums of money. So, what should you do next? Well, you’re a project manager, so the answer is obvious: go and make a plan.

You can use the blog ProjectManager to read posts and watch training videos to earn PDUs, but you can also use our software to track them. After all, earning PDUs is just another project, which you plan, schedule and monitor to make sure you’re on track to keeping your professional status. Our online Gantt chart works better than a spreadsheet, feeds instantly into a real-time dashboard to keep you updated, and you can visualize your workflow with out Kanban boards. What are Professional Development Units (PDU’s): A Beginners Guide

Written by mpug community. an authorised training provider for pmi for over 15 years.

Obtaining a PMP certification is a significant achievement for any project manager, as it demonstrates a high level of expertise and knowledge in the field of project management. However, it is important to note that maintaining the certification requires ongoing effort and commitment to professional development. One of the key ways to do this is by renewing the PMP certification every three years.

In this guide, we will provide a comprehensive overview of what PDUs are, how they are used, and the specific requirements for earning and maintaining PMP certification.

What are Professional Development Units (PDUS)?

According to the PMI CCR Handbook , PDUs, or Professional Development Units, are the measuring unit used to quantify approved learning and professional service activities. These activities must align with the skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle, which now focuses on Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Strategic Business Acumen.

The PMI Talent Triangle is designed to help project professionals develop a robust set of skills that are inclusive of different disciplines and practices, as well as other in-demand skills.

PDUs are divided into two categories: Education and Giving Back to the Profession. Let us take a look at what that means.

Education PDUS

Education PDUs allow project professionals to expand and enhance their technical, leadership, or strategic and business management skills. These activities must be related to the skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle and align with the topics and concepts outlined in the exam content outline for their specific certification. These exam content outlines, such as the PMP Exam Content Outline or the PMI-ACP Exam Content Outline, can serve as a helpful resource for identifying suitable education activities.

Giving Back to the Profession PDUs

Giving Back to the Profession PDUs allow project professionals to share and utilize their knowledge and skills as a means to contribute to and help build the profession. These PDUs are earned through activities that benefit the profession and not just the individual. These are a way for project management professionals to maintain their certification and stay current with the latest industry trends and practices.

It’s worth noting that fractions of PDUs may also be reported, with the smallest increment being 0.25. This means that even a short 15-minute activity could earn 0.25 PDU, and a 30-minute activity could earn 0.50 PDU.

How to earn PMP PDUS through Education

Course or training.

Instructor-led formal education courses or classes held in-person or online can provide individuals with a structured and interactive learning experience. These types of courses are offered by PMI, as well as other third-party providers like MPUG, and can be found across the globe. They provide an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, and gain valuable knowledge and skills that are relevant to the PMI Talent Triangle skill areas.

To earn PDUs through instructor-led formal education courses or classes held in-person or online, individuals must:

  • Look for PMI-approved course providers or PMI-approved training partners.
  • Look for courses that align with PMI Talent Triangle skill areas.
  • When only a portion of a course relates to topics relevant to the PMI Talent Triangle skill areas, calculate PDUs by the percentage of the overall curriculum focused on the applicable topic.
  • Report each course separately. Entire degree programs will not be recognized for PDU credits, only individual courses.
  • Provide documentation required for audit: Registration form, certificate of completion, or letter of attendance.

Rule: 1 hour of instruction equals 1 PDU

It’s important to keep records of the course or training, including certificates or other documentation, for a minimum of five years.

Organization Meeting

Organization meetings, such as those hosted by PMI chapters or other professional organizations, provide valuable opportunities for learning and networking. These meetings typically include an educational component, such as presentations or workshops, that focus on topics relevant to the project management profession. By participating in these meetings, you can gain new knowledge and insights, as well as connect with other professionals in your field. Many of these meetings are held on a local basis, making it easy for you to attend and engage in the activities that are most relevant to your career development.

To earn PDUs through meetings, activities, and local events related to the profession, individuals must:

  • Attend meetings or webinars hosted by PMI, its chapters, or its communities of practice.
  • Ensure that meetings and webinars are relevant to PMI Talent Triangle skill area topics, meet a specified purpose, and use knowledgeable resources.
  • Provide documentation required for audit: Evidence of attendance such as meeting agenda, minutes, or certificate of attendance.

Rule: 1 hour of attendance equals 1 PDU

Online or Digital Media

Self-paced learning conducted online, or through different forms of digital media, such as webinars, videos, and online courses, allows you to customize your learning experience to fit your schedule and needs. With the advancements in technology, there are now many educational opportunities available o nline and on demand.

To earn PDUs through self-paced learning conducted online or through varied forms of digital media, individuals must:

  • Engage in self-paced learning conducted online or through various forms of digital media.
  • Look into opportunities available through resources such as mpug.com, PMI Online Courses, and Authorized Training Partners.
  • Ensure that the learning activity is relevant to PMI Talent Triangle skill area topics, has a specified purpose, and uses knowledgeable resources.
  • Provide documentation for audit including evidence of the reported learning, notes from the activity and the dates of the activities conducted.

Rule: 1 hour of learning as 1 PDU

Self-directed reading can be a great way to earn Professional Development Units (PDUs) while maintaining your professional certifications. Reading relevant materials, such as books, articles, whitepapers, or blogs, is an excellent way to stay informed and support your ongoing professional development.

When earning PDUs through reading, it’s important to ensure that the materials you read are relevant to the certification you hold. This will not only help you earn PDUs, but also ensure that you are staying current in your field and expanding your knowledge base.

  • Use PMI-approved reading materials : PMI maintains a list of approved reading materials that are relevant to the PMP certification. Individuals can search for approved materials on the PMI website, or check out the available content on PMI’s Store and mpug.com.
  • Report the reading : After completing the reading, individuals must report it to PMI through the PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. They will need to provide details such as the title, date, and number of PDUs earned for the reading.
  • Provide documentation : Individuals must provide documentation, such as evidence supporting their reported learning, including notes from and dates of reading, to confirm their participation in the self-directed reading. This documentation will be needed in case of an audit by PMI.

Additionally, when only a portion of a book or article relates to topics relevant to the PMI Talent Triangle skill areas, individuals can calculate PDUs earned by the percentage of the overall content focused on the applicable topic.

In case of an audit, PMI may ask for evidence to support your claim of earning PDUs through reading. It is recommended that you keep a log of the books or materials you read, the date and time you read them, and the number of hours spent reading. This log can be in the form of a simple sheet of paper.

Rule: 1 Hour of reading as 1 PDU

Informal Learning

Informal learning refers to educational opportunities that occur outside of a formal classroom setting, such as through structured discussions with colleagues or mentors. These interactions can provide valuable professional development and can also be a way to earn PDUs (professional development units) in certain fields. Examples of informal learning opportunities include mentoring programs, “lunch and learn” sessions, and professional networking events.

To earn PDUs through informal learning, professionals must:

  • Participate in activities that are relevant to the PMI Talent Triangle skill areas. These areas include technical project management, leadership, and strategic and business management.
  • Report each activity separately through the PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program.
  • Provide documentation to support their reported learning activities. This can include notes from reading, registration forms for events, or certificates of participation from online communities.
  • Keep records of all informal learning activities for a minimum of five years in case of an audit by PMI.

It’s important to note that 1 hour of informal learning equals 1 PDU. However, when only a portion of the activity relates to topics relevant to the PMI Talent Triangle skill areas, the PDUs earned will be calculated by the percentage of the overall curriculum focused on the applicable topic.

How to Earn PMP PDUS by Giving Back

Work as a practitioner.

Each day, your work in a domain area related to your certification(s) allows you to apply your knowledge and skills in a practical setting. Using these competencies actively contributes to sustaining and growing the profession.

To earn PMP PDUs through working as a practitioner, individuals must:

  • Work in a domain area related to their certification: Individuals must work in a role that is related to their PMP certification and apply their knowledge and skills in a practical setting.
  • Provide documentation: Individuals must provide documentation, such as proof of employment (job description), to confirm their work in a role that is related to their certification. This documentation will be needed in case of an audit by PMI.

It’s important to note that there is a maximum number of PDUs that can be claimed per certification cycle (3 years):

  • PMP, PgMP, PfMP, PMI-PBA – no more than 8 PDUs claimed per cycle
  • PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP – no more than 4 PDUs claimed per cycle
  • CAPM – no more than 2 PDUs claimed per cycle

Also, PDUs claimed in this category count against the maximum PDUs allowed in the “Giving Back to the Profession” category. These PDUs only apply to the current cycle and cannot be transferred.

Create Content

Creating new knowledge resources for use by practitioners and the public at large is a great way to earn PDUs for your PMP certification. This type of activity falls under the “Giving Back to the Profession” category and allows you to share your knowledge and experience with others, while also contributing to the ongoing development of the profession.

There are many ways to create new content, such as:

  • Authoring books, blogs or articles
  • Creating webinars or presentations
  • Becoming a content creator on ProjectManagement.com
  • Authoring an article for the Knowledge Shelf

The rules for earning PDUs through creating content are as follows:

  • 1 hour spent creating content equals 1 PDU
  • The content must be relevant to PMI Talent Triangle skill area topics and meet a specified purpose
  • You must use knowledgeable resources when creating the content
  • The maximum number of PDUs that can be claimed per cycle varies depending on the certification held
  • You will need to provide documentation of your publications, sample educational materials or course agendas in case of an audit.

  • Keep track of the time you spend preparing and delivering the presentation.
  • Submit your documentation to PMI, which should include copies of your presentation, along with evidence of the date and time of the presentation.

  • Teaching a course or workshop on a topic related to project management.
  • Applying your knowledge and skills in a consulting or advising role.
  • Participating in a peer review or knowledge-sharing session with your team or organization.

It is important to note that the PMI has a limit on the number of PDUs that can be claimed in this category per certification cycle, and documentation such as notes and dates of discussions or activities may be required for audit.

Earn PDUS by providing volunteer services to non-employer or non-client organizations. PMI has an active community of thousands of volunteers who support the Institute and the profession in a wide range of roles. By volunteering, you can serve on a PMI committee or team. You can also volunteer your domain-related services to other not-for-profit organizations.

  • 1 hour spent volunteering equals 1 PDU Documentation required for audit: Evidence of volunteer services such as a letter from the organization or a copy of volunteer hours logged.

PMP PDU Requirements

The PMP certification renewal requirements include earning 60 professional development units (PDUs) and completing a certification renewal application on the Project Management Institute (PMI) website.

You are required to earn a minimum of 35 PDUs in the education category, out of which at least 8 PDUs must come from each of the skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle. The remaining 11 PDUs can come from any area of the Talent Triangle.

Table of Education PDU requirements

You can earn up to 25 PDUs in the Giving Back category by volunteering, creating knowledge, and working as a professional. However, the maximum number of PDUs that you can earn for working as a professional is 8.

Note that these numbers and categories may vary depending on the certification or credential you hold, and you should always refer to your certification body for specific requirements and guidelines.

How to claim PMP PDUS

To earn PDUs, PMPs must submit documentation of their professional development activities to the PMI. The PMI then reviews and approves the submission, and the earned PDUs are added to the PMP’s certification record.

Claiming Professional Development Units (PDUs) for Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a relatively simple process, but it is important to understand the requirements and guidelines set forth by the Project Management Institute (PMI), the organization that administers the PMP certification.

  • Project Management

Blog-Image

Project Management is a constantly changing profession. As a PMI Certified Professional, PMI expects you to be up to date in the project management field. PMI measures your learning in the form of Professional Development Units or PDUs. Every professional needs to renew their PMI certificate and report these PDUs to PMI every three years. This blog is a comprehensive guide to earning PDUs for CCR (Continuing Certification Requirements) of your PMI certificate. The question is, How PDUs help in maintaining the PMIs certificate ?

The question is, How PDUs help in maintaining the PMIs certificate ?

After clearing your PMI Certificate, you can immediately start learning and keep your CCRS updated with new PDUs. Do note that you need to earn PDUs within the CCR cycle to continue your PMI certificate. Earning PDUs ensures that you are up-to-date, competent, and relevant within the domains of your certificate.

The goal of PMI is to make sure that you are always prepared to meet the demands of your profession.

For example, if you are PMP® certified, you must earn Sixty PDUs within three years. Here three years represent the CCR cycle of your PMP® certificate.

PMI CCR Handbook  defines ways of Earning PDUs:

Let’s move to the details of various activities that help earn PDUs. As a professional, you may have different interests and desires in advancing your career. Thus PMI introduced many ways to earn Your PDUs. You may decide on activities and take part in them to earn PDUs.

PMI® has divided the acquiring PDU process under ten broad categories, which are further grouped under two sections –

  • First Educational PDUs and
  • Second, Giving Back to the Profession.

Under Educational PDUs we have five categories:

PMI aligned these five categories with the PMI Talent Triangle . Education includes activities in the Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen areas of the Talent Triangle.

PMI triangle

Under Giving Back to the Professional group we also have five categories

Minimum and maximum pdus requirements for your ccr:.

Before moving into the details of these activities, let’s first explore the minimum and maximum PDUs requirements for each category.

This information will help you to decide activities in earning PDUs.

Here, one of the interesting points to note that PMI did not constrain the minimum PDUs requirements with ‘Giving Back to Profession’.

Thus, PDUs from ‘Giving Back’ to the profession is optional.

If you are PMP® and/or PMI-PBA® credential holder:

  • There are no minimum PDU requirements for “Giving Back to Profession.
  • You need to earn at least Thirty-Five PDUs from the Education Category. Thus the maximum allowed PDUs from ‘Giving Back to Profession’ are Twenty-Five (60-35 = 25).
  • You have to earn at least Eight PDUs for the ‘Power Skills’, ‘Ways of Working’ and ‘Business Acumen’ categories of Talent Triangle.
  • You can earn the remaining 11 (35 – (8 Leadership + 8 Technical + 8 Strategic)) across any area of the Talent Triangle.
  • If you choose to earn PDUs from “Work as a Practitioner” from the ‘Giving Back to the Profession”, you can earn a maximum of eight in one CCR cycle.
  • You can choose to earn all sixty PDUs from any category of Education.

If you are PMI-ACP® credential holder:

  • There are no minimum PDU requirements for “Giving Back to Profession.
  • You need to earn at least Eighteen PDUs from the Education Category. Thus the maximum number of allowed PDUs from ‘Giving Back to Profession’ is Twelve (30-18 = 12).
  • You have to earn at least four PDUs for the “Power Skills”, “Ways of Working”, and “Business Acumen” categories of the Talent Triangle.
  • You can earn the remaining six (18 – (4 Power Skills + 4 Ways of Working + 4 Business Acumen)) across any area of the Talent Triangle.
  • If you choose to earn PDUs from “Work as a Practitioner” from the ‘Giving Back to Profession”, you can earn maximum of four in one CCR cycle.
  • You can choose to earn all thirty PDUs from any category of Education.

ACP-Strip

Some other important points to note:

  • All the Ways of Working PDUs earned for PMI-ACP® and PMI-PBA® certification are also counted in your PMP® certificate. But the reverse may not always be true. For more details, refer to my blog- “Earning Technical PDUs.”
  • Once you earn Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs, you can apply them to any PMIs certification. You can go through my Power Skills and Business Acumen blogs for more details.

Now come to the details of earning these PDU earnings:

Earn PDUs under Education Categories:

  • Course or Training: This is the most popular category for earning PDUs. Under this category, you earn PDUs:
  • By doing programs either organized by PMI ATPs (Authorized Training Partners),
  • Or by other third-party providers.

If PMI ATPs host the course, you can find their program details on the official website of PMI. For more information, you can refer to my blog on “Earning PDUs Against Activity Code”

2. Organization Meetings:   Many ATP(s), PMI chapters and third parties host educational activities. If PMI ATPS host the event, you can find their program details on the official website of PMI. Irrespective of who is hosting these events, these educational sessions give you opportunities:

  • To earn PDUs, and
  • Also give you chance of networking in your community.

Generally, these Organization meetings limited to 1-2 PDUs

3. Online or Digital Media: The most interesting category includes self-paced learning. You can do self-paced learning through pre-recorded webinars, podcasts, and digital media. For more details, kindly refer to my blog “How to report Online and Digital PDUs

4. Read: You can earn PDUs by reading materials including (but not limited to) informational, non-fiction books, articles, white papers, or blogs. If you like reading to enhance your knowledge and skills, this could be an interesting category for you. For more details, refer to my blog “How to report Read PDUs” .

5. Informal Learning: You can also earn PDUs by attending activities including (but are not limited to) mentoring sessions, panel discussions, lunch and learn sessions, or other structured discussions. PMI understands that attending mentoring sessions and panel discussions is an excellent way to take your skills to the next level. So attend them and also grab the opportunity to earn PDUs.

Earn PDUs under Giving Back to Profession:

  • Work as a Practitioner: This is a sure kind of category. If you are working in as per the profession of your certificate. Now the question is – how many PMI PDUs can I claim for working as a practitioner? The answer is, working as a Project Manager; you can report a maximum of 8 PDUs if you are   PMP®  certified.
  • Authoring Whitepaper / book / blog on project management and business analysis
  • Creating a presentation / training on project management and business analysis
  • Give a Presentation: You can earn PDUs by presenting on topics relevant to project management and business analysis, depending on your certificate. You can speak at professional conferences, at a PMI chapter event, or within your organisation. If you give a presentation in project management or business analysis, the PDUs earned will equal the hours spent. If you also created the presentation’s content, then in the same claim, you can count any time spent preparing for the presentation in PDUs.
  • Share Knowledge: Mentoring, teaching, coaching or applying your knowledge and subject matter expertise also allow you to earn PDUs.
  • Volunteer: You can earn PDUs by providing volunteer, non-compensated project management service to non-employer or non-client customer groups. The activities listed below can help you get PDUs in this category.

            I. Serve as an elected volunteer officer for a project management organisation, including PMI®                    chapters and communities of practice.

II. Serve as a volunteer/appointed committee member of a project management organisation.

III. Providing project management related volunteer services to PMI® or other professional                            project management associations.

IV. Provide volunteer project management-related services to a community or charitable group, or                  colleges.

You can club Earning PDUs with some next-level certification you may like to think in the near future. In this case, courses from ARP are the best way to earn PDUs.

In other words, ‘ Read ’, ‘ Online and Digital Media ’ and Courses from ATPs are easy and popular ways to earn PDUs.

Report PDUs and Renew your PMIs certificate:

As soon as you earn PDU(s), you can report them. For more details on how to report PDUs, you may refer to my blog:

  • How to report  ‘Read’  PDUs.
  • How to report  ‘Online and Digital’  PDUs.

You should remember that renewal is collecting PDUs and paying the renewal fee to PMI. Upon earning all these PDUs, PMI will send an email to renew and make payments. A new CCR cycle starts after the renewal process.

The renewal fee is different for PMI members and nonmembers. I see many test takers still need to renew their membership after doing the certificate. So, if you are renewing your certificate, take one more advantage and save 90 USD. The renewal fee for the member is 60 USD, and for the nonmember, it is 150 USD. Also, many of you must know that they do not have to wait for the complete CCR cycle to renew the certificate. As you get the required PDUs, you can pay the fee and renew it for the next cycle. So, if you renew it in your exam year, you will get the renewal for six years.

In summary, the following are the basic steps in the CCR of your certificate:

  • Earn PMI certificate
  • Attend or take part in activities to earn PDU for your CCR
  • Record and Report PDUs.
  • Upon earning all these PDUs, PMI will send an email to renew and payments
  • A new CCR cycle starts after the renewal process

PMI requires certification renewal for all of its certifications. You can read the whole PMI PDU Guide . Therefore, if you have a PMP certification, you must be careful to earn 60 PDUs in each three years. After you completed 60 PDUs, you must submit these in PMI website and apply for PMP certification renewal respectively.

Following figure shows the cycle and PDU needs for each PMI certification.

PMP PDU Requirements

PDU stands for Professional Development Unit, and PMI was not classifying PDUs until 2016. PMP certified professionals were attending to trainings, courses, activities and working as practitioner in the projects. Upon submitting their earned PDUs, they were having the right to renew their PMP certification.

In 2016, PMI introduced the PMI Talent Triangle and brought new requirements for earning PDUs. Changes in the PDU submission cover new PMI PDU categories, PMP PDU breakdown, and PMP PDU limits for each category.

Please note that PMI recently changed the PDU category names in the Education category. From now on the PDUs in the Technical Project Management category are replaced with “Ways of Working”; PDUs in the Strategic and Business Management category are replaced with “Business Acumen”; PDUs in the Leadership category are replaced with “Power Skills”.

PMI Talent Triangle proposes that an ideal project manager skill set includes Ways of Working skills, Power Skills, Business Acumen . Therefore, a PMP certified professional must earn PMP PDUs, which are corresponding to these three categories of the PMI Talent Triangle. Now, let us go through the details of PMP PDU requirements one-by-one.

PMP PDU Requirements #1 – Minimum 35 Education PMP PDUs

First PMP PDU requirement is a PMP certified professional must earn at least 35 education PMP PDUs. Education category has following sources for earning PDUs:

  • Course or Training
  • Organization Meetings
  • Online or Digital Media
  • Informal Learning

Moreover, these education PDUs must contain at least 8 PDUs from each category of the PMI talent triangle: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. Once you completed the 8 PDUs from each category, remaining 11 PDUs of the education category can be from any of the PMI talent triangle categories. Note that, 35 PDU from education category is the minimum PMP PDU limit requirement. Therefore, you can complete all of your 60 PMP PDU need from education category.

PMP PDU Requirements #2 – Maximum 25 Giving Back PMP PDUs

  • Work as Practitioner
  • Create Content
  • Give a Presentation

Watch our “What are the PMP® PDU Requirements?” video

As you see, other alternatives of earning PMP PDU from giving back category are creating content, giving a presentation, sharing knowledge and volunteering. These all require you to perform additional effort compared to earning education PDUs. Therefore, especially if you are a working professional, we strongly recommend you to earn all 60 PMP PDUs by attending an online PMP PDU course . This is the hassle-free, most convenient and affordable way of earning 60 PDUs and renewing your PMP certification.

Following figure summarizes the first two PMP PDU requirements and PMP PDU limits for each PMP PDU categories.

How to Calculate PDUs

For Project Management Institute (PMI) certification, Project Managers must know what a Professional Development Unit (PDU) is, how to calculate a PDU, and how to manage the process for submitting PDUs to meet requirements. Each PMI certification requires a specific number of PDU credits per renewal cycle, but how you calculate PDU credits is the same for all.

On this page:

PMI’s Professional Development Unit (PDU) measures project management-related continuing education efforts. PMI manages certification maintenance programs using the categories of education, working as a practitioner, and volunteer efforts. Failure to submit valid PDU claims or to meet the number of PDU claims required can lead to the suspension or eventual loss of certification status.

Converting project management professional development time into PDU credit may be the easiest of all PMI formulas. Calculating PDU time is done as 1 Hour (60 minutes) = 1 PDU.

How to calculate PDU Credits

Calculating PDUs is not about the mathematical conversion of time to training units but instead addresses two concepts:

  • the requirements of what qualifies as PDU activities being fulfilled, and
  • the distribution of PDU types as required by a PMI certification.

For a detailed description of what counts for education PDUs, students should review the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook .

You can earn Education PDUs when you complete training and broaden your professional skillsets. For any training, you should find out if the provider is a PMI Authorized Training Partner and how the topic fulfills PDU requirements. The Education PDU category is defined through PMI’s Talent Triangle® to ensure a balance of project management skills.

The PMI Talent Triangle® is comprised of three branches of project management development: (1) Ways of Working, (2) Power Skills, and (3) Business Acumen.

For example, Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam application PDU requirements state the student must provide proof of 35 PDU credits aligned to the PMI Talent Triangle . Once a PMP certification holder, the project manager submits at least 60 PDU credits distributed across the three categories within a renewal cycle to maintain credential status.

PMI Talent Triangle: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen PDUs

PMI updated the Talent Triangle recently to reflect more current terminology. Previously, the categories were Technical Project Management, Leadership, and Strategic and Business Management. However, the names of the categories were changed to Ways of Working (Technical Project Management), Power Skills (Leadership), and Business Acumen (Strategic and Business Management). Ultimately, it’s most critical to remember PMI uses 1 hour = 1 PDU.

PMI Talent Triangle: Ways of Working (Technical Project Management)

The Ways of Working category encompasses domain expertise and certification-specific training with topics such as:

  • agile practices
  • data gathering and modeling
  • risk management
  • time, budget, and cost estimation

PMI Talent Triangle: Power Skills

PMI defines Power Skills as the “competency in guiding and motivation,” including these topics :

  • emotional intelligence
  • negotiation
  • problem-solving

PMI Talent Triangle: Business Acumen

The Talent Triangle category of Business Acumen is described as the “business-oriented skills” with the topics of:

  • industry knowledge and standards
  • legal and regulatory compliance
  • operational functions
  • strategic planning, analysis, alignment

Studying for the PMP Exam?

PMI encourages engagement in the profession through the Giving Back PDU , “…a unique opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills while growing both personally and professionally.” PMI accepts Giving Back PDU submissions for:

PMI certification requirements can be achieved by combining Giving Back and Education PDUs.

Access the PMI Certification Requirement handbook for the number of PDU credits needed for each PMI certification.

PMP®, PgMP®, PfMP®, PMI-PBA®

Using the PMP credential as an example, the 3-year renewal cycle has 60 PDU hours with a minimum of 35 Education PDU.

• PMI Talent Triangle PDU: 24 • Additional Education PDU: 11 • Maximum Giving Back PDU: 25

The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification has a 15 PDU 3-year renewal cycle for:

  • PMI Talent Triangle PDU: 9
  • Minimum Education PDU: 0
  • Maximum Giving Back PDU: 6

PMI-ACP®, PMI-RMP®, PMI-SP®

As an example, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® certification has a 30 PDU requirement for a 3-year renewal cycle:

  • PMI Talent Triangle PDU: 12
  • Additional Education PDU: 6
  • Maximum Giving Back PDU: 12

For working as a practitioner, volunteer efforts, or PMI Talent Triangle® eligible training hours, the PDU claim process is the same. What differs is the information needed for each claim type when reporting in PMI’s Continuing Certification Renewal System (CCRS).

With the CCRS, PMI certification holders can get a PDU claim status report and see the status of each submitted PMP PDU claim. If approved by PMI, your PDU credit will be applied to your account as part of the credential maintenance process. As a note, if you obtain education PDU hours from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, those PDU hours will be automatically approved by PMI. Check out How to Claim PDUs for Your PMI Certification PMA Blog Post for more information.

Project Managers should know the PMI formula to calculate time for PDU credit, the PDU requirements of their certifications, and how to report PDU efforts to prevent a professional designation lapse. Keep these essential points in mind:

  • Time spent fulfilling PMI’s PDU requirements for certification is calculated as 1 Hour = 1 PDU.
  • PMI certifications have specific PDU requirements within multi-year renewal cycles.
  • All PDU claims must be submitted via PMI’s Continuing Certification Renewal System .

Use Project Management Academy resources and training as part of your efforts to earn PDU credit for PMI certification applications, maintenance, and renewals.

How To Claim Your PDUs?

Once you get PMP® certified, you need to earn a certain number of PDUs in order to maintain your certification credentials. What are PDUs? PDUs or Professional Development Units are a part of PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program which you need to earn every three years once your certification credentials expire. PDUs are one-hour blocks of time that you spend learning, teaching others, or volunteering.

You need to gain 60 PDUs to maintain your Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification. PMI Talent Triangle™ offers you the opportunity to continue your learning and development process by aligning it with the PDUs which you need to earn to renew your certification credentials. Also, you need to choose between the opportunities and ways provided under education and giving back to the profession to earn these PDUs. Once you earn these PDUs, you need to claim them to earn your online PMP certification .

8 steps to claim your Education PDUs

It is mandatory for you to submit and claim your PDUs in order to earn your PMP® certification. The most efficient way to record your PDUs is by using CCRS. In order to maintain active certification status, you need to record your PDUs and complete the renewal process. You can claim your PDUs in these 8 easy steps:

1. Log in to PMI.org.

You need to log in to the PMI website using your login credentials. Once you log in, you need to click on ‘Report PDUs’.

2. Course or training

In the next landing page, you need to click on ‘Course or Training’ under Education.

3. Enter the name of a provider

Once you enter the name of a provider, the system looks for PMI-approved providers within the search. However, you are also allowed to enter a third-party provider’s name into the field. You need to select a provider from the list in order to get pre-approved activity information in the claim form. But if you have taken a course or activity offered by a third-party vendor which is not pre-approved by PMI® for its PDUs, you just need to type the name of the provider into the field and do not select any provider from the list.

4. Select a PMI-approved provider

Once you select a PMI-approved provider, CCRS will only return the training or courses that are already associated with that provider. Typing three letters into the Activity field will search for any activity which matches in the CCRS directory. Do not select any activity from the list if you have taken a course or training activity from a third-party vendor, as it will pre-populate the rest of the form with the information from a pre-approved provider and activity. You just simply need to type the activity name into the field.

5. Fill the remaining fields on this form

  • If you have taken training with a PMI® approved provider then you just need to select the dates of the activity. Once you select the provider and activity from the list, the other activity details will be pre-populated into the claim form.
  • You need to complete all the fields to provide the details for the claim is you have taken education activities offered by third-party vendors who are not pre-approved by PMI®.

6. Enter or modify the PDUs that align with the PMI Talent Triangle™

  • You can modify the Talent Triangle™ PDU values for PMI-approved activities that are pre-populated in the claim form is you didn’t stay for the entire activity. You may modify Talent Triangle™ PDUs to values below the maximum limit for the activity.
  • You need to manually enter PDU values under the Technical skill area if you have taken training from any third-party provider. Again, you need to enter PDU values for Leadership and Strategic skill areas manually. If you hold multiple certifications, these PDUs will automatically be shared across all your certifications.

In the next step, you need to click on ‘I agree this claim is accurate’.

Once you agree to the terms, you need to submit your PDU claim. Once you click on the ‘Submit’ button, you will receive a transaction notification which shows multiple Claim IDs for multiple certifications and allows you to print the notification or continue to reporting another claim.

Steps to claim ‘Working in the Profession’ PDUs

As a PMI® member, you can earn PDUs for working in the profession in numerous ways. Few of them are as follows:

  • Create new content:   You can earn PDUs for maintaining your PMP® certification credentials by writing project management books and articles for professional print or electronic publications. You can also write blogs for your company or organisation, or present a podcast or webinar.
  • Volunteer Service:   Provide professional services to an organisation or group outside your employer in order to earn the required PDUs for maintaining your PMP® credentials. This might include any elected offices that you hold for a project management organisation. PMI® offers numerous volunteer opportunities too.
  • Doing your job:  You can also claim PDUs by practicing project management professionally. You can maintain your credentials by working as a project manager every day.

Follow the below steps to claim your PDUs under ‘Working in the Profession’:

Step 1:  You need to log in to the PMI® website using your log-in credentials to claim your PDUs for working in the profession and select ‘Report PDUs’ and Cat F for the PDU category and click on ‘Next’. But you will need to ensure the following in order to complete the PDU request:

  • Workplace name
  • Workplace address
  • Date started
  • Date completed
  • Number of hours completed
  • Further, you need to consider the Processes and Knowledge Areas that you use in your practice and be prepared to select each of those.

Step 2:  If you see your name at the top of the landing page that means, you have successfully logged in.

Step 3:  In the next step, you need to select ‘Maintain your certification: Earn and report PDUs’ which will appear on the drop-down list once you hover over ‘Certification’. Or, select myPMI. Step 4:  The above step will take you to a CCRS landing page where you need to select ‘Category F’ in the PDU category.

Step 5:  Once you do that, you will land on a complete detail page where you need to select ‘Next’.

Step 6:  In the next page, you will see that 5 PDUs are already displayed in the blank. You just need to click ‘Next’.

Step 7:  Now you need to click on ‘Agree’ and then click on ‘Submit’ to claim your 5 PDUs.

Step 8:  Once you complete the process, check your e-mail for confirmation from PMI®, as you should receive an e-mail from PMI.org indicating that you have successfully submitted your PDU request. This e-mail will be sent to the address which you have provided in your PMI.org profile.

PRESS RELEASE

Setting a new standard for privacy in AI, Apple Intelligence understands personal context to deliver intelligence that is helpful and relevant

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today introduced Apple Intelligence , the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant. Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy in AI, with the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”

Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

Whether tidying up class notes, ensuring a blog post reads just right, or making sure an email is perfectly crafted, Writing Tools help users feel more confident in their writing. With Rewrite, Apple Intelligence allows users to choose from different versions of what they have written, adjusting the tone to suit the audience and task at hand. From finessing a cover letter, to adding humor and creativity to a party invitation, Rewrite helps deliver the right words to meet the occasion. Proofread checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure while also suggesting edits — along with explanations of the edits — that users can review or quickly accept. With Summarize, users can select text and have it recapped in the form of a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.

In Mail, staying on top of emails has never been easier. With Priority Messages, a new section at the top of the inbox shows the most urgent emails, like a same-day dinner invitation or boarding pass. Across a user’s inbox, instead of previewing the first few lines of each email, they can see summaries without needing to open a message. For long threads, users can view pertinent details with just a tap. Smart Reply provides suggestions for a quick response, and will identify questions in an email to ensure everything is answered.

Deep understanding of language also extends to Notifications. Priority Notifications appear at the top of the stack to surface what’s most important, and summaries help users scan long or stacked notifications to show key details right on the Lock Screen, such as when a group chat is particularly active. And to help users stay present in what they’re doing, Reduce Interruptions is a new Focus that surfaces only the notifications that might need immediate attention, like a text about an early pickup from daycare.

In the Notes and Phone apps, users can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is initiated while on a call, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Apple Intelligence powers exciting image creation capabilities to help users communicate and express themselves in new ways. With Image Playground, users can create fun images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use and built right into apps including Messages. It’s also available in a dedicated app, perfect for experimenting with different concepts and styles. All images are created on device, giving users the freedom to experiment with as many images as they want.

With Image Playground, users can choose from a range of concepts from categories like themes, costumes, accessories, and places; type a description to define an image; choose someone from their personal photo library to include in their image; and pick their favorite style.

With the Image Playground experience in Messages, users can quickly create fun images for their friends, and even see personalized suggested concepts related to their conversations. For example, if a user is messaging a group about going hiking, they’ll see suggested concepts related to their friends, their destination, and their activity, making image creation even faster and more relevant.

In Notes, users can access Image Playground through the new Image Wand in the Apple Pencil tool palette, making notes more visually engaging. Rough sketches can be turned into delightful images, and users can even select empty space to create an image using context from the surrounding area. Image Playground is also available in apps like Keynote, Freeform, and Pages, as well as in third-party apps that adopt the new Image Playground API.

Taking emoji to an entirely new level, users can create an original Genmoji to express themselves. By simply typing a description, their Genmoji appears, along with additional options. Users can even create Genmoji of friends and family based on their photos. Just like emoji, Genmoji can be added inline to messages, or shared as a sticker or reaction in a Tapback.

Searching for photos and videos becomes even more convenient with Apple Intelligence. Natural language can be used to search for specific photos, such as “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt,” or “Katie with stickers on her face.” Search in videos also becomes more powerful with the ability to find specific moments in clips so users can go right to the relevant segment. Additionally, the new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject.

With Memories, users can create the story they want to see by simply typing a description. Using language and image understanding, Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. Users will even get song suggestions to match their memory from Apple Music. As with all Apple Intelligence features, user photos and videos are kept private on device and are not shared with Apple or anyone else.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri becomes more deeply integrated into the system experience. With richer language-understanding capabilities, Siri is more natural, more contextually relevant, and more personal, with the ability to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. It can follow along if users stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next. Additionally, users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment. Siri also has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when Siri is active.

Siri can now give users device support everywhere they go, and answer thousands of questions about how to do something on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Users can learn everything from how to schedule an email in the Mail app, to how to switch from Light to Dark Mode.

With onscreen awareness, Siri will be able to understand and take action with users’ content in more apps over time. For example, if a friend texts a user their new address in Messages, the receiver can say, “Add this address to his contact card.”

With Apple Intelligence, Siri will be able to take hundreds of new actions in and across Apple and third-party apps. For example, a user could say, “Bring up that article about cicadas from my Reading List,” or “Send the photos from the barbecue on Saturday to Malia,” and Siri will take care of it.

Siri will be able to deliver intelligence that’s tailored to the user and their on-device information. For example, a user can say, “Play that podcast that Jamie recommended,” and Siri will locate and play the episode, without the user having to remember whether it was mentioned in a text or an email. Or they could ask, “When is Mom’s flight landing?” and Siri will find the flight details and cross-reference them with real-time flight tracking to give an arrival time.

To be truly helpful, Apple Intelligence relies on understanding deep personal context while also protecting user privacy. A cornerstone of Apple Intelligence is on-device processing, and many of the models that power it run entirely on device. To run more complex requests that require more processing power, Private Cloud Compute extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can flex and scale its computational capacity and draw on larger, server-based models for more complex requests. These models run on servers powered by Apple silicon, providing a foundation that allows Apple to ensure that data is never retained or exposed.

Independent experts can inspect the code that runs on Apple silicon servers to verify privacy, and Private Cloud Compute cryptographically ensures that iPhone, iPad, and Mac do not talk to a server unless its software has been publicly logged for inspection. Apple Intelligence with Private Cloud Compute sets a new standard for privacy in AI, unlocking intelligence users can trust.

Apple is integrating ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools.

Siri can tap into ChatGPT’s expertise when helpful. Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and Siri then presents the answer directly.

Additionally, ChatGPT will be available in Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, which help users generate content for anything they are writing about. With Compose, users can also access ChatGPT image tools to generate images in a wide variety of styles to complement what they are writing.

Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account.

ChatGPT will come to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year, powered by GPT-4o. Users can access it for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features right from these experiences.

Availability

Apple Intelligence is free for users, and will be available in beta as part of iOS 18 , iPadOS 18 , and macOS Sequoia  this fall in U.S. English. Some features, software platforms, and additional languages will come over the course of the next year. Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English.
