  • Thesis Topic This is the title of your paper, and it is important to pick something that is interesting. It should also have ample material for research.

  • Results This chapter presents the results that you got after doing your study. Make sure to use different strategies, such as tables and graphs, to make it easy for readers to understand.
  • Discussion This chapter evaluates the results gathered from the study. It helps the researcher to answer the main questions that he/she outlined in the first chapter. In some cases, the discussion can be merged with the results chapter.

GIS Thesis Ideas

Agricultural development is aimed at improving efficiency in the production of consumable goods. Proper efficiency means spending less money and using fewer resources to increase benefit. Agricultural theses can provoke the analysis of different aspects of crop growth, innovative farming techniques, resource conservation and applied economics. Analysis results can debunk and justify methods for incorporating agricultural development in urban areas, integrating pastoral and crop farming and implementing resource conservation tactics that help maintain sustainable economies.

Producing Fresh Fruits and Vegetables for Urban Restaurants

The title "Producing Fresh Fruits and Vegetables for Area Urban Restaurants" is a suitable thesis proposal for examining the benefits of establishing an inner-city garden to supply local public food establishments. To create a sound assessment, the agricultural student can choose a representative sample of participating restaurant owners and their produce buyers to determine what fruits and vegetables they use. To evaluate need, surveys can ascertain the distance and lengths buyers will go to obtain fresh produce and how much they spend weekly or monthly in their quests. Results of this thesis research can be used to justify grant money for the establishment of an urban garden.

Using Chickens to Generate Greenhouse Heat

The title "Using Chickens to Generate Greenhouse Heat" suggests a research proposal to see how much heat can be generated naturally on a farm without incurring further expense from buying heat lamps, especially during winter seasons. This thesis would have to be backed by scientific research or literature reviews showing the amount of heat naturally emitted from one chicken. This calculation can then be multiplied to determine how many chickens would be needed to add heat to a specified enclosed square footage area.

Evaluating Conservation Agriculture in the Developing World

The title "Evaluating Conservation Agriculture in the Developing World" proposes to explain how specific conservation agricultural practices affect the economic development and prosperity of a particular under-developed area. Agricultural resources that are scarce have to be identified, along with practices to conserve these resources. In areas where conservation practices are implemented, longitudinal research can be performed to assess the viability of conservation and the long-term benefits of implementation to the community at large.

The Impact of Grafted Potatoes on Soil

"The Impact of Grafted Potatoes on Soil" is an analysis of soil quality for the management of soil-borne disease and eventual increased potato growth. Testing of this thesis can be done by comparing the number and quality of potatoes produced under grafting conditions with those yielded from a single shoot.

By your last term, you should have finished 14 credits of research and be enrolled in 4 credits of BRR403 ( syllabus ). Try to finish any remaining research no later than the beginning of this term, leaving plenty of time to write your thesis. At the beginning of your last term, prepare a brief thesis outline in consultation with your mentor. Also, plan ahead : let your mentor know when you hope to give your final seminar, and make sure he or she will be available. Thesis format:

Your thesis will be written in the format of a manuscript submitted to a scientific journal in your field. You and your mentor will select an appropriate journal. You will follow this format exactly, except that the Introduction and Methods sections of your thesis may be expanded to provide more detail than what is found in a typical journal article. The average thesis is about 25 double-spaced text pages, plus 6-8 tables and figures.  At the discretion of the mentor, additional material may be added in an appendix. Link to examples in Library archive.

A helpful checklist you can use to critique your thesis can be found here.

Thesis/BRR403 Meetings:

You will attend BRR403 during the term you are writing your thesis (usually your final term). The usual meeting time for BRR 403 is Mondays at 5 pm. When you come to the first meeting, you will bring a journal article from the journal you have selected to use for format.

Finishing your thesis: timeline:

The BRR advisor will help you schedule your final seminar/thesis defense, to be held no later than Friday before dead week . You should give drafts of each thesis section to your mentor as you complete them .

Submit a complete draft copy of your thesis to your faculty mentor no later than three weeks prior to final seminar/defense date . Your advisor will meet with you to give you back an edited draft two weeks before your final defense. Submit a revised copy of the thesis to the faculty mentor, secondary advisor, and BRR director no later than one week prior to final seminar/defense date .  This copy should contain the Thesis Title Page and Signatures Page , which you and your committee will sign when the final thesis is approved. [note: clicking on the Thesis Title Page link will download an RTF version of the title and signture pages, which you can open in Word or cut and paste into a Word document. You will insert your information in the highlighted sections and remove the highlighting].

Honors College thesis formatting requirements are slightly different: see link . If you are in Honors College, follow their required format. Your committee will give you suggestions and editorial changes to the thesis at your defense. Using these, edit and submit a final copy of the thesis to your faculty mentor and BRR director. Obtain signatures from your committee on the signatures page and give a signed final copy to the advisor by Wednesday of finals week .

NOTE THAT THE UNIVERSITY HONORS COLLEGE HAS DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE THESIS COMMITTEE, TITLE PAGE FORMAT, AND DEADLINES (deadlines are earlier)! YOU WILL HAVE TO HAND IN A BOUND COPY OF YOUR THESIS TO HONORS COLLEGE, WHEREAS BRR RECQUIRES AN ELECTRONIC COPY.

IF YOU ARE IN THE HONORS COLLEGE, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT DETAILS OF THESE HONORS COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS.

(5930507), Lisseth Zubieta. "Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi: crop management systems alter community structure and affect soybean growth and tolerance to water stress." Thesis, 2019.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are best known for their potential to help plants acquire nutrients, especially phosphorous. These microbes improve soil health by promoting soil aggregation and carbon sequestration, and further benefit plants by helping them withstand biotic and abiotic stress. Currently, there are 200 recognized species of AMF within the phylum Glomeromycota. Recent studies indicate that individual AMF species differ in the benefits they provide, with some even acting as parasites. Moreover, AMF community composition can be altered by soil and crop management practices, but the effect of these changes on the benefits conferred by AMF are still not well understood. Consequently, the goal of this study was to determine how two widely used crop management systems can alter the composition of AMF species, and affect the potential for these communities to promote the productivity and drought tolerance. To accomplish this goal, we collected AMF inoculum from a long-term crop systems trial comparing organic and conventional management for use in greenhouse trials where we subjected plants to drought. We collected AMF inoculum during mid-summer when differences between the two management systems were likely cause larger effects on AMF communities, and again in autumn after harvest to see if differences in AMF communities would persist. We determined AMF species composition using next generation sequencing. Results of this study confirm that soil-building practices commonly used in organic farming systems can improve soil health and increase the productivity of food-grade soybeans. They also demonstrate that AMF communities in Indiana croplands are highly diverse, and some of these taxa can improve soybean growth and help plants tolerate water stress. Although the overall diversity of AMF communities did not differ between the organic and conventional management systems in mid-summer, individual AMF taxa did differ between the systems, which were likely responsible for the greater tolerance to water stress observed when plants were amended with inoculum from the organic system. AMF communities present during autumn were significantly different between the two crop management systems, but did not result in differences in drought tolerance of soybeans, indicating that the loss of key AMF taxa in the organic system from the first relative to the second experiment was likely responsible. Finally, plants grown using inoculum from both crop management systems in autumn had greater tolerance to water stress than plants that received a AMF commercial inoculum. This provides further evidence that individual AMF species vary in the benefits they provide, and that the presence of a diverse consortium of AMF species is needed to optimize plant health and productivity in agricultural systems. Agricultural producers should consider incorporating soil-building practices that are commonly used in organic farming systems such as planting winter cover crops, to improve the health of their soil and enhance the productivity of their crops.
