A Nightmare

I woke up with dread in the middle of the night with my body drenched in cold sweat. The nightmare had come to haunt me again — “The Tsunami”. Though I am now safely back in Malaysia, I still cannot erase from my memory the sense of grief and trauma of the dear and near ones of the victims of the Tsunami when it struck the shores of Chennai, India.

To recall that fateful day, I was at the beach with my family. We were having a good time until we noticed that the surrounding seawater was rising at an astonishing rate. The vast circle of golden sand around the beach—was disappearing—rapidly: The shore was chaotic. Exclamations of shock were on all sides. We were being swept towards the shore.

In the meantime, I was befuddled by two conflicting impressions-the idyllic blue sea and the rapidly rising sea waters. As I pondered over these problems, the water level had risen by approximately 2 meters, but the sea still remained calm with barely a wave in sight. The flimsy huts of the fishermen near the coast were washed away by the seawater. Something in me prompted me to hurry my family out of the beach towards our car and drive away. We were barely across the road when a large body of water almost toppled our car. We barely managed to get ourselves to safety. Having parked the car safely away from the beach, I looked at the beach to see what had happened.

The sight of the devastation along the beach is a nightmare that continues to haunt me till date. All the lovely cottages, those familiar joggers, the coconut seller, the children playing cricket on the sands of the beach, the young boys practicing their football, they were all gone, in their place was receding sea water. The beach that was moments ago filled with joyous early morning people was now filled with corpses. I will never forget the nightmare of 26.12.2004.

Essay on An Ideal Teacher

Good teachers are very rare. They have a permanent impression upon the mind of their young students. An ideal teacher is not heaven born. He is earthy, but he possesses heavenly qualities of head and heart. I read in M.R.V. Sr. Sec. School, Delhi. There are 50 teachers in our school. All the teachers are honest and hardworking.

I respect all the teachers. But I like Shri R. Tiwari the most. He is my favourite teacher. He is an ideal teacher. He is a young man of 34 years. He is an M.Sc., B.Ed. He belongs to a noble family. He is very sweet and learned. He teaches us Mathematics. He is our class-incharge.

His way of teaching is very simple. He explains everything very clearly. He is the master of his subject. He develops a taste for reading and writing. He does not beat the weak students. Every student does his homework happily. All the students respect him very much. He has many good habits. He is an early bird. He goes out for a walk daily. He takes exercise regularly. He prays to God daily. He puts on neat and clean clothes. ‘Simple living and high thinking’ is the motto of his life. He is never late for school. He is tall, strong, healthy and handsome. He is active and smart. He is a good speaker and sportsman. After the school time he plays with us. He is a social worker. He always helps the poor and the needy. He is very polite. He is a man of character. All the students and teachers praise him. He is a gem among men. May he live long!

Diving deeper, essays can be categorized based on their focus and approach. From the vivid details of Descriptive essays to the storytelling charm of Narrative pieces; from the introspective journey of Reflective essays to the informative style of Expository writings, and the limitless realms of Imaginative essays. This chapter equips students with the skills to navigate through these diverse forms, enriching their writing repertoire.

The festival I like Most

Diwali is the most important festival of the Hindus. It means a “row of lamps”. It is a festival of lights. It is one of our most popular festivals. It generally comes off in the last week of October or in the first week of November. The Hindus celebrate this festival in the memory of Shri Ram Chandra’s return to Ayodhya after killing Ravana, the king of Lanka. Great preparations are made before the festival. Houses are cleaned, white-washed and decorated beautifully. Beautiful pictures, photos and calendars are hung in the rooms. Old things are replaced with new ones. The bazaars are over-crowded. The shops are well decorated. There is great rush at the sweets’ and toys’ shops. People buy sweets and toys. They send sweets and presents to their friends and relatives. At night the scene is very beautiful. The bazaars, shops and houses are lit with tiny bulbs. Earthen lamps (Diyas) and candles are in rows on the roofs of houses. Children enjoy fire works and crocker. Children look very happy on this day. The Goddess Laxmi is worshiped at night. But some people gamble on the day to try their luck. It is very bad. It must be stopped. Diwali is a festival of great rejoicings. So it should be celebrated joyfully.

If I Win a Lottery Prize

I want to earn money through hard work when I grow up. However, I know how I would use the money if I win a lottery prize, say, of 5 lakh rupees. First, I would give my friends and relatives a tea party. The menu would consist of the choicest sweets. Second, I would buy the best of clothes for my parents, brothers, sisters and myself. Third, I would buy a scooter, for it takes me a lot of time to travel on a cycle. Fourth, I would set up a library of my own. This would consist of the most interesting books for children. The boys and girls of my locality would be free to borrow these books and read them. All this would cost me about thirty thousand rupees.

I would deposit one lakh in a post office under some useful saving scheme. This would yield me the necessary funds for my higher education. Sixth, I would give the remaining amount to my parents so that they may build a house. At present, they do no have enough money to build one. We have been living in rented houses all our lives. Some landlords have been very good while others have been painfully bad. So we feel that there is nothing like having one’s own house. Well all these plans depend upon my winning a lottery prize!

This paper examines the concept of nightmares from a psychological perspective. It addresses the question of what actually causes nightmares and the psychological considerations relative to same.  The paper is split into the following sections: (i) Introduction and Background (ii) The causes of nightmares (iii) Psychological considerations (iv) Conclusions.

Introduction

Virtually everyone experiences nightmare or bad dreams at one time or another. The experience can leave you feeling scared, upset and frightened. The reality is that it cannot harm you.  Adults come to terms with this condition but this can be extremely frightening for young children who are still at an impressionable age and receive much more vivid dreams because of the very active state of the brain at that age.  As you sleep the brain does not shut down but goes through a state called Rapid Eye Movement (REM). During this condition you enter a dream state and these can potentially be very frightening or disturbing.

The Causes of Nightmares

The condition of a nightmare or bad dream is often a stress reliever and as such an upsetting experience during the day may be translated as a bad dream. This equally applies to watching horror movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Dracula, Jason etc.  It can equally be induced by reading a scary book.  I remember being disturbed after reading a ghost story by Charles Dickens called the Signalman which portrayed tunnels.  Certain medications can also induce the state but equally there may be no apparent reason at all.

It is possible to help prevent nightmares for children by getting them into a healthy sleep state. Get them to avoid watching scary movies before they go to bed as the brain is particularly receptive to graphic images of violence. You may also use a nightlight in the child’s bedroom so that if they wake up suddenly they are surrounded by familiar things. Young children might be provided with a cuddly toy like a Teddy Bear that is essentially a prop as a trusted and protective friend.

Psychological Considerations

Where children experience repeated nightmare conditions, it may be prudent to seek medical advice from your Doctor who might recommend psychological counselling.  This is unusual but it may be symptomatic of a more serious problem. The child might have been traumatised in some way e.g. A marriage break-up or divorce, a dispute between the parents, a bullying situation at school etc.  These can be treated by medication but need to be addressed before more serious complications arise. Equally it might just require a simple condition change i.e. the child just needs to be hugged and feel protected. “ A sleep clinic can check your brain waves, muscle activity, breathing and other things that happen with your body whilst you sleep” (Gavin, 2009).

Conclusions

Adults are most prevalent to nightmares from taking medication or involved with heavy drinking “Particularly among adults, prescription drugs such as levedopa, reserpine, beta blockers, and antidepressants, as well as withdrawal from addictive drugs, all can provoke nightmares. Heavy drinking also is strongly associated with nightmares” (USA Today, 2010). In more serious cases Psychological intervention may prove to be extremely beneficial and they have access to a number of different techniques “Chronic nightmares have also been treated by a desensitization method that uses instruction about rehearsal of the nightmare and the imagining of a different ending.” (USA Today, 2010)

Essay on “A Nightmare” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

A Nightmare

Don’t eat just before going to bed!” my mother used to tell me. “You might get a nightmare.” How right she was. I never believed her until it happened to me. It was on a night when I felt hungry just as I was about to go to bed. So I made myself a peanut-butter sandwich and a large cold glass of milk. After consuming them I went to bed. Soon I drifted off into a troubled sleep. I dreamt that I was with a group of people looking for an old woman. I was not sure why we were looking for her but we all seemed afraid of her. Somehow we had to find her. So there I was, searching high and low for her in frightful places I had never been before. Sometimes I seemed to be flying while at other times I seemed unable to move. The whole atmosphere was one of fear, like a dreadful horror-movie in which I was a victim. After some searching, I entered a darkened room and saw a figure sleeping on a bed. As I got nearer the figure suddenly threw away the blanket, got up and stared at me. It was an ugly old woman with shiny golden teeth. She raised her claw-l”e fingers and walked towards me. I wanted to run but was unable to. I tried to scream but found that I could not. In horror I struggled and struggled to get away from the frightful woman. The next moment I gave a muffled yell and found myself panting on my bed. My goodness, what a horrible nightmare it was! For a minute or so I lay on my bed not daring to close my eyes for fear of falling asleep again and continuing the nightmare. Then I sat up on my bed until the horrible feeling passed. From then on I never ate just before going to sleep.
