Researching the efficacy of Lumosity

What we did

Lumos Labs conducted a randomized study of Lumosity brain training and published the results in a peer-reviewed research journal.

In it, half of the 4,715 participants who completed the study trained five days per week, for fifteen minutes each day on Lumosity while the other half did online crossword puzzles as an active control.

What we found

After 10 weeks, Lumosity users improved more than the control group on our assessments of working memory, short term memory, processing speed, problem solving, fluid reasoning, and overall cognitive function.

These results are promising, but more research is needed to determine the connection between improved assessment scores and everyday tasks in participants' lives.

Next questions

Future research should address the risk of inadvertent experimenter bias and the risk of attrition bias in this study, as both the Lumosity and crossword groups had approximately 50% attrition rate. As with all scientific research, there is also a risk of publication bias.

All it does is give the answer

Seriously saying, this app is literally just useless unless if you know the answer to math problems and want to check your answers. Otherwise, paying wouldn’t be a consideration for me. For those who are on a tight budget, and have a strong desire to reach their future career, I’d say paying wouldn’t be worth it, especially if you are just doing a living only as a student with no career and if you do not have enough financial support. I’ve lived a long way with this app studying all day and all night and yet there is high demand for paying just to get the work shown to get the idea why a question is answered in a certain way. This is why nowadays I read reviews from various books titled for math and read books that give a full explanation of how an answer is earned. As a life lesson it’s just good to say the fact that spending is not worth it for this app since there are various places and apps to ask questions related to learning math (at least in my area). This app should be like a substitute teacher or tutor for those who are having trouble, but the fact that there is such huge fee just ruins the reason why I should install this app. Teachers ask for showing work, and yet I’m stuck, having no idea what to do to get the right answers. This also goes to understanding how an answer is caught as well.

It works but the full version hasn’t for me

I have been using this a lot this semester so I decided to pay for the monthly subscription then I could cancel the membership at the end of the semester, but it doesn’t even work. The subscription shows in my subscriptions list in my settings but I still can’t view the steps, and when I attempt to see how the problem is solved it brings me to the menu to subscribe to the paid part of the app. Honestly though, other than that. This app works pretty great, solves problems the right way and you can select the method of how you want the problem solved. You can change what kind of math you are trying to solve, and the answers are pretty spot on. The predictive text is even really good on this, it’ll help solve word problems and you kind of don’t em have to type anything in sometimes. However, the keyboard is very buggy and you can’t type very fast. It’s also kind of hard to navigate as there are like 4 different keyboard menus to choose from, I always forget where to find things and it kind of takes a while to load the text sometimes. But it does solve the problems.

Google is enhancing Android’s Circle to Search — the feature that lets you literally circle something on your Android phone’s screen to search it on Google — with a new ability to generate instructions on how to solve school math and physics problems .

Using an Android phone or tablet, students can now use Circle to Search to get AI assistance on mathematical word problems from their homework. The feature will help unpack the problem and list what the student needs to do to get the correct answer. According to Google, it won’t actually do the homework for you — only help you approach the problem.

Over the past year, the use of AI tools like ChatGPT has become a hot topic in the field of education, with plenty of concern over how students can and will use it to get work done quickly. Google, however, is explicitly positioning this as a feature to support education, potentially walking around some of the concerns about AI doing all of the work for students.

Later this year, Circle to Search will also gain the ability to solve complex math equations that involve formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. Google is using LearnLM, its new AI model that’s fine-tuned for learning, to make the new Circle to Search abilities work.

Circle to Search first launched on  Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series in January and then on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro later the same month. It’s one of the star new features of Android, and although iOS users can’t yet circle their math homework for help, anything is possible .

Auto theft is a serious problem. But Doug Ford’s approach won’t solve it

OPINION: With the new penalties, it’s not quite clear what the government’s plan is beyond trying to look like it’s tough on crime and treading on federal territory to do so

The Ontario government is proposing to suspend the driver’s licences of convicted auto thieves in a bid to look like it’s taking crime seriously. The proposed penalties are no joke. A first offence will earn offenders a 10-year licence suspension. A second offence escalates to 15 years. A third offence will result in a lifetime driving ban. The suspensions will apply when the thefts are accompanied by aggravating factors such as violence or stealing for organized crime.

Politicians love to get “tough on crime.” It’s cheap and easy policy. Never mind that it rarely works and, indeed, often makes things worse. The phrase, the approach, the spirit of punishment for the sake of punishment resonates with a good chunk of the population. It’s folksy, in a macabre sort of way. In other words, it’s very much in keeping with Doug Ford’s approach to governance — lots of showmanship, lots of faux-populism, and few results.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria couched the proposed penalties in terms of privileges versus rights, perhaps preparing for the inevitable court challenge.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right,” he said. As if there were any doubt that stealing cars is bad or that carjacking someone is unacceptable, he added, “If you're shameful enough to prey on other members of the community for your own reckless gain, you'll lose that privilege.”

Ontario is also planning to suspend the licences of stunt drivers — those who go faster than 40 kilometre/hour above the speed limit in a zone marked below 80 kilometres. The new penalties for stunt drivers will be leaner than those for car thieves: one offence will mean a one-year licence suspension, a second will lead to a two-year ban, and a third will net a lifetime ban, which could be reduced.

Speaking to Mike Crawley of the CBC , Stephen Hebscher, a lawyer with the Criminal Law Team in North York, suggested the penalties may violate the Constitution by creeping into criminal-law territory, which is a federal responsibility. He noted that thefts would need to be linked to highway safety for the bill to be constitutional. He’s probably right. Hebscher, like many others, also notes that the penalties may not work — that is, they won’t reduce thefts. He’s right again.

Auto theft is a serious problem. The government would like to remind us of that as it repeats the line that a vehicle is stolen every 14 minutes or so in Ontario. That is a problem, as are the violence and organized crime inextricably linked to growing theft. But Ford’s approach isn’t going to solve the problem, since the deterrent won’t work, and when it comes to organized crime, there’s always going to be a new thief to replace one who gets pinched.

Suspending the licence of a stunt driver makes more sense, since driving is inherent to the act of driving irresponsibly and dangerously fast, so getting stunt drivers off the road will be effective even if the deterrent isn’t. But that logic doesn’t apply to car thieves.

As we often see with the Ford government, it’s not quite clear what its plan is here beyond trying to look like it’s tough on crime and treading on federal territory to do so. In February, the government shared its intent to appoint partisan judges who’d be tougher on crime, a violation of democratic norms and a perversion of the justice system . It was decried as a cynical, trust-eroding, and useless move if the goal was the reduce crime. Now Ford is going back to that well.

Once again, the province is enjoying an expensive piece of tough-on-crime theatre. But Ford may win either way. When the inevitable court challenge does arrive, if the law is ruled unconstitutional in whole or in part, the government will simply denounce soft, out-of-touch judges who don’t give a damn about suburban parents getting violently carjacked while taking the kids to soccer practice.

If he loses in court, it’s unlikely Ford would be able to rely on the notwithstanding clause, as he has before , since the provision can’t be used to override the Constitution’s division of powers. But he could at least claim he was trying to do something to stop these yahoos! ​​​​​​​

The problem, of course, is that what Ford is doing, even if it’s popular, even if it’s in response to a real problem, won’t solve anything —  or at least it won’t address the structural problem, even if it will make it look, for a time, like the government is taking the matter seriously. As I’ve written before , we’d be far better served by a long-term strategy that addresses the determinants of crime, social and economic factors, and presses car manufacturers to make cars harder to steal in the first place. That’s not to say we should let criminals off the hook, but the reality is that, if the goal is to prevent crime in the first place, threatening to suspend a driver’s licence isn’t going to get the job done. Governments, particularly the Ford government, ought to be more concerned with results than adopting show policies that won’t do anybody any good.

ChatGPT may be about to make your job way easier

The latest version of ChatGPT could turn the artificial-intelligence tool into a personal assistant — including at work .

Among the new features that OpenAI highlighted on Monday: You can pull up ChatGPT on your computer desktop or smartphone screen and show it whatever you're looking at, whether it's a math problem on a whiteboard or a screen full of code.

In one demo during OpenAI's presentation on its newest model powering the chatbot, GPT-4o (that's the letter O, not zero), ChatGPT suggested changes to code in real time on a user's computer.

At first, ChatGPT was known for its command-prompt-like interface, which allows users to type in questions or requests for images. Last fall, OpenAI added a voice mode, allowing users to ask questions like they would with Alexa or Siri — albeit with a more sophisticated model responding.

But with GPT-4o, users can now show ChatGPT what they're working on and get real-time feedback.

ChatGPT can also give feedback on work in the real world. In Monday's demo, OpenAI employees showed the tool, via smartphone camera, a simple algebra problem written on a whiteboard.

Eventually, ChatGPT gave them hints on how to solve an unknown variable, giving them feedback at different stages.

GPT-4o marks "the first time that we are really making a huge step forward when it comes to the ease of use," OpenAI's chief technology officer, Mira Murati, told an audience at the company's offices as Monday's presentation kicked off.
