How can I transfer my in-person case teaching plan to an online environment?

The case method can be used in an online environment without sacrificing its benefits. Learn how HBS brought the case method online in this podcast , gather some quick guidance from the article " How to Teach Any Case Online ", review the Teaching Cases Online Guide for a deep dive, and check out our Teaching Online Resources Page for more insights and inspiration.

After 35 years as an academic, I have come to the conclusion that there is a magic in the way Harvard cases are written. Cases go from specific to general, to show students that business situations are amenable to hard headed analysis that then generalize to larger theoretical insights. The students love it! The 2021-2022 academic year marks the 100-year anniversary of the introduction of the case method at Harvard Business School. Today, the HBS case method is employed in the HBS MBA program, in Executive Education programs, and in dozens of other business schools around the world. As Dean Srikant Datar's says, the case method has withstood the test of time.

What happens in class if nobody talks? Dropdown down

Professors are here to push everyone to learn, but not to embarrass anyone. If the class is quiet, they'll often ask a participant with experience in the industry in which the case is set to speak first. This is done well in advance so that person can come to class prepared to share. Trust the process. The more open you are, the more willing you’ll be to engage, and the more alive the classroom will become.

Does everyone take part in "role-playing"? Dropdown down

Professors often encourage participants to take opposing sides and then debate the issues, often taking the perspective of the case protagonists or key decision makers in the case.

Case studies.

The teaching business case studies available here are narratives that facilitate class discussion about a particular business or management issue. Teaching cases are meant to spur debate among students rather than promote a particular point of view or steer students in a specific direction.  Some of the case studies in this collection highlight the decision-making process in a business or management setting. Other cases are descriptive or demonstrative in nature, showcasing something that has happened or is happening in a particular business or management environment. Whether decision-based or demonstrative, case studies give students the chance to be in the shoes of a protagonist. With the help of context and detailed data, students can analyze what they would and would not do in a particular situation, why, and how.

How Do Great Leaders Overcome Adversity?

In the spring of 2021, Raymond Jefferson (MBA 2000) applied for a job in President Joseph Biden’s administration. Ten years earlier, false allegations were used to force him to resign from his prior US government position as assistant secretary of labor for veterans’ employment and training in the Department of Labor. Two employees had accused him of ethical violations in hiring and procurement decisions, including pressuring subordinates into extending contracts to his alleged personal associates. The Deputy Secretary of Labor gave Jefferson four hours to resign or be terminated. Jefferson filed a federal lawsuit against the US government to clear his name, which he pursued for eight years at the expense of his entire life savings. Why, after such a traumatic and debilitating experience, would Jefferson want to pursue a career in government again? Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer Anthony Mayo explores Jefferson’s personal and professional journey from upstate New York to West Point to the Obama administration, how he faced adversity at several junctures in his life, and how resilience and vulnerability shaped his leadership style in the case, "Raymond Jefferson: Trial by Fire."

Can Sustainability Drive Innovation at Ferrari?

When Ferrari, the Italian luxury sports car manufacturer, committed to achieving carbon neutrality and to electrifying a large part of its car fleet, investors and employees applauded the new strategy. But among the company’s suppliers, the reaction was mixed. Many were nervous about how this shift would affect their bottom lines. Professor Raffaella Sadun and Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna discuss how Ferrari collaborated with suppliers to work toward achieving the company’s goal. They also explore how sustainability can be a catalyst for innovation in the case, “Ferrari: Shifting to Carbon Neutrality.” This episode was recorded live December 4, 2023 in front of a remote studio audience in the Live Online Classroom at Harvard Business School.

The PGA Tour and LIV Golf Merger: Competition vs. Cooperation

On June 9, 2022, the first LIV Golf event teed off outside of London. The new tour offered players larger prizes, more flexibility, and ambitions to attract new fans to the sport. Immediately following the official start of that tournament, the PGA Tour announced that all 17 PGA Tour players participating in the LIV Golf event were suspended and ineligible to compete in PGA Tour events. Tensions between the two golf entities continued to rise, as more players “defected” to LIV. Eventually LIV Golf filed an antitrust lawsuit accusing the PGA Tour of anticompetitive practices, and the Department of Justice launched an investigation. Then, in a dramatic turn of events, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour announced that they were merging. Harvard Business School assistant professor Alexander MacKay discusses the competitive, antitrust, and regulatory issues at stake and whether or not the PGA Tour took the right actions in response to LIV Golf’s entry in his case, “LIV Golf.”

Case studies come in a variety of formats (articles, book chapters, videos, etc.). Learn how to find case studies in the library collection below.

Note:   We have several collections with case studies (as seen below), but they can still be hard to find. Many companies pay experts to write case studies and, in turn, want payment for the cases.

Marina Bay Sands at night

Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies of 2020

A case study on the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore claimed the top spot in the annual review of case usage conducted by the Yale School of Management’s CRDT.

A case study on the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore claimed the top spot in the annual review of case usage conducted by the Yale School of Management’s Case Research and Development Team (SOM CRDT), dethroning "Coffee 2016", the top case in the last two annual surveys. Marina Bay Sands case examines the intersection of marketing, operations, and sustainability at the luxury resort.

Coffee 2016 fell to second place and a note on Search Fund Company Boards took the third spot. Cases on Shake Shack, Volkswagen, Cadbury, Netflix, Endesa, and the Mayo Clinic rounded out the top ten.

All of the top 40 cases are available for purchase from Yale Management Media .

The list had a particular international flavor this year with 19 of the cases featuring organizations located outside the United States. The top 40 featured 27 "raw" online cases and 13 "cooked" .pdf cases. The functional perspectives of the cases spanned the full range of interests at the Yale School of Management, from customers, the workforce, state & society to investors, entrepreneurship, and sourcing and managing funds.

Other year-end data for 2020 showed:

  • Consumption of “raw'' online cases by numbers of users and countries remained steady in 2020 as compared to 2019, but over 50 more titles were viewed, a roughly 30 percent increase.
  • Just under half of raw case users were from the U.S., up from a third the year before.
  • Customers bought 197 titles, 70 more than in 2019.
  • A third of the top 40 cases featured women in leadership positions.
  • Interest in SOM case studies remained steady with almost 150K page views of the SOM CRDT case directory .
  • Close to 80 percent of those who browsed the directory were from outside the U.S., a 20 percent increase over  2019.

How Sterling Administration uses Jotform Enterprise and AI to ensure the safety of seniors

How Sterling Administration uses Jotform Enterprise and AI to ensure the safety of seniors

Lainie Johnson

Alex Tellez of Sterling Administration , an independent administrator for health savings and similar accounts, uses Jotform Enterprise to provide a simple solution to a complex problem: providing healthcare to seniors.

Logo of Sterling Administration

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), falls are one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths among adults ages 65 and up. When Tellez set out to create a system to help seniors prevent falls, he saw Jotform Enterprise as the tool he needed.

Tellez combined Jotform Enterprise with his years of experience designing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for dating apps and CRM systems to develop a solution. “We’re a heavy AI shop,” says Tellez. “What we’re doing requires a lot of processing after data capture. Jotform Enterprise is an integral front-end tool for ingesting data.”

Using Jotform Enterprise, Tellez created a form that allows anyone to upload and submit a video of a person walking. Once submitted, the video is sent to Google Cloud using an API. From there, an AI tool Tellez created can measure and assess their gait and balance.

Our Jotform Enterprise form is three questions and a video [upload]. It takes under a minute to complete. If you can do something positive for people in less time than it takes to watch a commercial, that’s a good thing. Alex Tellez, Sterling Administration

“An eight-second video can contain as many as 300 unique frames,” says Tellez. “Each frame captures multiple points of interest that enable us to track how each point moves over time and how that contributes to the likelihood of a fall.”

Working with physicians and orthopedists, Tellez designed a system to intelligently measure key gait indicators (such as head-bobbing, posture, body angles, and body symmetry) and generate a unique report based on the values captured in each video.

“In 3–4 minutes, we can output an AI-generated report that includes that individual’s risk of falling, exercise recommendations, and diagnoses codes that care providers and physical therapists can use to inform treatment,” says Tellez.

“Our Jotform Enterprise form is three questions and a video [upload],” says Tellez. “It takes under a minute to complete. If you can do something positive for people in less time than it takes to watch a commercial, that’s a good thing.”

Streamlining the collection and flow of data

Sterling Administration is glad to say goodbye to the days of customers mailing in paper forms.

Headshot of Darren Lee

“With Jotform Enterprise, we can modernize old ways of doing business,” says Darren Lee, SMS solutions architect for Sterling Administration. “Instead of requiring paper forms, we can quickly morph online form templates into whatever we need by adapting the flow or adding hidden fields, which saves us, our users, and our end-clients a lot of time.”

A full gait analysis from an orthopedist can take 2–4 hours. Using Jotform Enterprise and our AI model, we can generate a similar report in 3.5 minutes. Alex Tellez, Sterling Administration

“We have several integrations with Jotform Enterprise that support both internal and end-client processes,” says Lee.

Simplifying reporting and reducing medical costs

Sterling Administration also uses Jotform Enterprise’s native reporting features to support internal processes and decision-making.

“When our CEO wanted to know about the types of devices our customers used to fill out our forms, we could easily pull that data from the Admin Console,” says Lee.

“A full gait analysis from an orthopedist can take 2–4 hours,” says Tellez. “Using Jotform Enterprise and our AI model, we can generate a similar report in 3.5 minutes.”

How Jotform Enterprise and AI are supporting the future of healthcare

The physicians, orthopedists, and medical directors Tellez works with all agree that AI is here to stay, and giving people the tools to self-diagnose and track their progress is the future of care.

“The question was,” says Tellez, “How can we make this a tool that will benefit people?”

Many seniors have limited mobility or access to transportation, making it difficult to access healthcare. Others are resistant to in-home care because they are wary of strangers.

“Using Jotform Enterprise and AI is a convenient way of delivering care,” says Tellez. “It’s not rocket science. We’re just trying to prevent people from falling.”

Even so, sometimes Tellez needs a helping hand. “I give the Jotform Enterprise support team high marks for resolution time,” he says. “Sometimes I work until 11 p.m., but no matter when I ask for help, I hear back quickly.”

Maintaining flexibility and security with HIPAA solutions

Sterling Administration uses two instances of Jotform Enterprise. One instance gives teams the flexibility to perform AI analysis and share data, while the other stores HIPAA forms and information with limited, traceable access.

“Meeting HIPAA compliance standards is critical for our industry,” says Lee. “Our Jotform Enterprise HIPAA instance prompts us to think about the safety precautions we need to take to protect our users’ data, so we maintain that level of security at all times.”

Jotform Enterprise even enables HIPAA controls at the form field level. “It’s very convenient,” Tellez says.

Jotform Enterprise does a really good job at data capture, or what I consider the front door for every operation,” says Tellez. “And frankly, 90 percent of the battle is getting someone to walk through your front door. Alex Tellez, Sterling Administration

Taking the next step with Jotform Enterprise

Looking ahead, Tellez plans to use Jotform Approvals to expand his solution.

“People want another page on our report saying what we think is appropriate, so they can request that item from their doctor, order it, and send the bill,” says Tellez.

If a senior doesn’t get a good gait score and is at high risk of falling, their physician may order durable medical equipment (DME), like a cane. Using Jotform Approvals, Tellez’s report could connect the recommended DME to an approval flow, enabling the patient to request DME from their physician, who could then approve the request, trigger an order, and bill the insurance.

“It would spare people navigating a complex system and reduce costs when the DME is doctor-prescribed,” he says.

How Jotform Enterprise opens doors for solution providers

Sterling Administration takes full advantage of the ability to customize its forms, whether it be working with designers to create a specific look or simply pasting in a logo.

“The white labeling features of Jotform Enterprise make it easy to create custom and co-branded forms for our clients,” says Lee. “Enabling that brand recognition ensures people aren’t alarmed when they go to fill out our forms.”

Tellez sees a tremendous future ahead as more people use no-code form-building, automation, and AI to build sophisticated yet simple systems that people value.

“Jotform Enterprise does a really good job at data capture, or what I consider the front door for every operation,” says Tellez. “And frankly, 90 percent of the battle is getting someone to walk through your front door.”

“There are so many creators who could use Jotform Enterprise as an easy front door,” he says. “And many will ask, ‘Now that I’ve gotten you to walk through that front door, what can I do that will be of value?’ That’s our future.”
