A business plan template for kids is great for two reasons:

  • Your child can play around with it and get familiar with what's required (even if they never start the business)
  • It helps kids focus on just one business idea at a time, and to see if they should move forward with it

No matter which category your own child falls into – just playing with business plans, or they have an actual business idea – I’ve got just the free business plan template for you.

Honestly? I wish my own parents would’ve given me one of these when, as a kid, my childhood friend and I had come up with our first kid business idea: selling bean bags. So, good on you for getting your kids involved with business plans so early in life!

Probably one of the biggest? Was that I didn't sit down to write a proper business plan (or, ANY business plan) until I was several years into blogging.

What Goes in a Business Plan?

  • Product/Service : Description of what you offer.

Develop a Business Plan Worksheet

The Executive Summary

  • Product/Service Description : Provide a brief, compelling description of your offering, emphasizing its unique features or benefits that set it apart.
  • Leadership and Team : Introduce key team members and their qualifications, showcasing their expertise and their role in your business's success.
  • Financial Information : Give an overview of your current financial status. Mention revenue and profits if your business is running. If you seek financing, explain how much you need and where you'll invest it.
  • Growth Plans : Share your strategy for growth and long-term goals, outlining how you'll expand and achieve profitability.

The executive summary sets the stage for your business plan, making a strong first impression and sparking excitement for what follows.

The Products/Services 

In this part, we'll dig deeper into the heart of your business—your products or services. We're going beyond the basics to look at three crucial aspects:

  • Benefits to Customers : Discuss how your products or services help your customers. Explain how they solve specific problems or fulfill the needs of your target market. What makes them stand out? What's the unique value they bring compared to what competitors offer?
  • Product Lifecycle : Every product or service has a journey. Tell us about the expected lifecycle of yours. Are you planning updates, new versions, or related offerings in the future? Knowing this helps us understand how your business will evolve.
  • Intellectual Property : If it applies to your products or services, include any intellectual property rights you have. This might include copyrights, trademarks, or patents. These rights protect your creations and can be valuable assets.

Remember, this section is all about offering the essence of what you're offering and why it's special.

Target Market

Knowing your target market is a cornerstone of business success. Let's simplify:

Who Are Your Customers?

  • Demographics : Basic info like age, gender, income, and location helps you target effectively.

What Makes Them Tick?

  • Psychographics : Understand their interests, lifestyle, and buying habits to connect personally and tailor your marketing.

Market Trends

  • Stay Updated : Keep an eye on industry trends and market shifts. Adapt to capitalize on opportunities.

Why does it matter? Think of it like knowing the weather—it helps you plan. Understanding your target market is your key to getting ahead.

Your marketing and sales strategies are crucial for attracting and retaining customers.

Marketing Mix

Here, we'll break down each element of your marketing mix—product, price, promotion, and place (distribution). 

  • Product : Describe your product offerings in detail. What are their unique features and benefits? Why would your target customers choose your products over others in the market? Be clear about what sets you apart.
  • Price : Explain your pricing strategy. Will you compete on price, offering lower costs than competitors? Or will you position your products as premium and charge a higher price? Detail any discounts, bundles, or special offers you plan to implement.
  • Promotion : Outline your promotional tactics. How will you create awareness and interest in your products? This can include advertising, public relations, content marketing, social media campaigns, and more. Specify your marketing budget and the platforms you'll utilize.
  • Place (Distribution) : Describe your distribution strategy. How will your products reach your customers? Will you sell directly to consumers, through retailers, or online? Highlight your distribution channels and logistics. Explain how you'll ensure your products are readily available where your customers want them.

Sales Process

Now it’s time to discuss how you plan to turn potential leads into paying customers.

  • Direct Sales : If your strategy involves direct sales, explain how your sales team will engage with potential customers. Provide insights into your sales force, their training, and how they will approach prospects.
  • Online Sales : If online sales are a significant part of your strategy, detail your e-commerce platform. Discuss the user experience, payment processing, security measures, and any online marketing tactics to drive traffic and conversions.

Competitive Analysis

To stay ahead of the game, make sure to conduct a thorough competitive analysis. This means rolling up your sleeves and diving deep into the strategies and operations of your rivals. 

  • In-Depth Examination : Start by examining your competitors meticulously. Look into their products or services, pricing strategies, marketing tactics, and customer base. The goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of what they do and how they do it.
  • Strengths and Weaknesses : Highlight your competitors' strengths and weaknesses. What are they exceptionally good at, and where do they fall short? Identifying these aspects will help them identify opportunities to capitalize on their weaknesses and leverage their strengths.
  • Success Insights : Share your insights into what makes your competitors successful. Understand their unique selling propositions, customer engagement strategies, and market positioning. This knowledge will provide you with a foundation for your own strategies.

Every business has something that sets it apart from the rest – these are your competitive advantages. In this section, it's time to highlight why customers should choose you over the competition.

  • Expert Team : If you have experts on your team, let people know. Customers trust businesses with knowledgeable professionals who offer excellent products or services. If you're new, focus on any relevant experience to build trust as your business grows.
  • Unique Partnerships : If your business has forged unique partnerships or collaborations that give you an edge, make it known. These alliances can lead to exclusive offerings, cost advantages, or increased visibility in the market.
  • Ideal Location : If your business benefits from an ideal location that attracts foot traffic or serves a specific target demographic, this can be a powerful competitive advantage. Explain how your location enhances your business prospects.

By underlining your competitive advantages, you're essentially telling your audience why you're not just another player in the market.

  • Regulations : Mention any rules you need to follow, like permits or licenses.
  • Risk Planning : Identify potential problems and your backup plans.
  • Growth Strategy : Explain how you'll handle growth, like hiring more people or expanding to new markets.
  • Costs : Break down your expenses, both fixed and variable, and how you'll manage them.

By laying out these details, you'll be well-prepared to handle the challenges and growth opportunities that come your way.

The Management Team

In this section of your business plan, you'll want to cover a few key areas:

1. Personal Background : Start by introducing the key people in your management team, if there are any. If it’s just you—don't worry! Give some basic details like names, ages, where they live, their interests, and their educational background. Also, mention any special skills they bring to the table.

2. Business Experience : Talk about their history in the business world. Have they been involved in other businesses? Have they held important positions before? Share their past achievements and roles in previous companies.

3. Track Record : Highlight their successes, the responsibilities they've handled, and their capabilities. Show how their previous experiences have prepared them for the roles they'll play in your business.

4. Education : Mention their formal and informal education, like degrees, certifications, or courses they've taken that are relevant to your business.

5. Financial Standing : Include personal financial statements and supporting documents to demonstrate their financial stability and ability to contribute to the business if necessary.

6. Work History : Detail their direct experience in similar businesses and how it aligns with your current venture.

7. Roles and Responsibilities : Clearly define who does what on the management team. Explain why they're the right fit for their roles and who makes the final decisions.

Including these details paints a picture of your team's qualifications and their role in making your business a success.

In this part of your business plan, focus on who will be working with you.

  • Current and Future Needs : Start by saying how many people you have on your team right now, if any. Then, talk about how many team members you think you'll need in the near future (like the next year or two) and in the longer term (three to five years from now).
  • Skills Required : Describe what skills your team members should have. Think about what makes them good at their jobs and what special skills might be needed for your business.
  • Job Descriptions : Explain what each person on your team will be responsible for. This will help everyone better understand their roles. Keep in mind that your roles might change as your business grows.
  • Finding People : Discuss how you plan to find and hire the right people. As students, you might use your school's resources and online job platforms or work with other students who have the skills you need.
  • Pay and Benefits : Clarify if you'll be paying salaries, hourly wages, or both. You can also mention any extra rewards or bonuses based on performance. Since you're a student, you may not offer extensive benefits initially.

Financial Analysis

Think of this section as the pulse of your business plan. It gives you a detailed look at your business's financial health and sustainability. This part is crucial for students because it helps them make informed decisions and attracts potential investors or lenders.

Balance Sheet

Get a certified public accountant (CPA) to help you create a balance sheet. This document paints a picture of your business's financial situation at a specific moment. It has three main parts:

  • Assets : What your business owns ( cash, equipment, or inventory).
  • Liabilities : What your business owes (such as loans or outstanding bills).
  • Owner's Equity : The owner's stake in the business, which is assets minus liabilities. It's basically your business's net worth.

Break-Even Analysis

This is significant because it tells you when your business will start making money. It determines the minimum amount of sales revenue needed to cover both fixed costs (like rent and salaries) and variable costs (like materials and utilities). It's based on info from the income statement and cash flow projections.

Income Statement (Profit and Loss Statement)

The income statement gives you the lowdown on your business's financial performance over a specific time frame, usually monthly or annually. It shows how much money you made and how much you spent. Subtract the expenses from the income, and you've got your profit or loss. It's all about how well your business handles its cash.

Cash Flow Statement

Cash is king in business, and this statement forecasts how money will move in and out of your company. It predicts all cash coming in and going out, helping you ensure you have enough to cover day-to-day costs and investments and pay off any debts. A strong cash flow is crucial to keeping your business going.

As student entrepreneurs, having a CPA set up your accounting system is a smart move for accuracy. When you present these financial documents in your business plan, make sure they're clear and detailed. 

These numbers prove the worth and profitability of your business idea, which can be a big draw for potential investors or lenders. So, be thorough and get the figures right. 

Supporting Documentation 

You'll also want to include various documents that back up the information you've presented in the main part of your plan. Keep in mind that this list might change depending on how far along your business is. Here's what to include:

  • Resumes : Put in resumes of the people who are key to your business. Show off their qualifications and experience to give confidence to potential investors or lenders.
  • Credit Information (appendix) : If relevant, add credit reports for yourself or your team members. This will prove that you're financially responsible.
  • Quotes or Estimates : Include any quotes or cost estimates you've received from suppliers or service providers. This helps prove that you've done your homework on expenses.
  • Letters of Intent from Prospective Customers : If you have letters from potential customers saying they want to use your products or services, toss those in. It shows there's a demand.
  • Letters of Support from Credible References : If you have supportive letters from mentors, professors, or industry experts, add those. They can vouch for your idea.
  • Leases or Buy/Sell Agreements : If you're renting space or buying equipment, include the agreements. It proves you have the physical assets and responsibilities in place.
  • Legal Documents Relevant to the Business : If there are any legal papers like incorporation documents, partnership agreements, or licenses, include them. It shows you're following the rules.
  • Census/Demographic Data : If your business relies on specific data about people, include statistics or reports from trustworthy sources. This information will support your market analysis and target audience information.

Remember to keep these documents well-organized in the appendix. This list covers the basics, but tailor it to your specific student business plan's needs and stage of development.

Making a business plan.

  • A business plan is an overall outline of your business: how you will be working on it, and how will it bring you profit in the long run.

Determine what business you would like to establish

  • Choose a business that interests you, shows your skills, or a business that is needed in your area. 
  • Determine if your business will offer either a service or a product or even both.
  • Think of a business that will make you stand out among your competitors.

Make your business name

  • Decide on a business name that is unique but easy to pronounce and remember.
  • People should be able to easily determine what your business offers.
  • Provide a brief discussion of what your business is all about.
  • Include your goals, objectives, your product, and what makes your business different among others.

Plan your team

  • You can do your business by yourself, hire employees, or seek help from your family members.
  • Identify all your materials and determine the cost for each.
  • If you are going to hire employees, compute how much you will pay them.
  • If commercial spaces are to be rented, include the renting and utility costs in your expenses.
  • After considering all expenses, you can now make a price for your product and estimate how much will be your profit.

Know your market

  • Determine who will be your customers.
  • Consider the place of your business and research the demographics of the area.
  • Are there more professional people, young, old, mothers, fathers, or students? 

Competitors

  • Know who will be your competitors.
  • Do research on businesses in the same location that have the same product or service as you.
  • Identify how long they have been established, how much they charge for their product, and how does their product differs from yours.
  • With all the information you have gathered, determine how you can make an edge with your business.
  • You can either offer lower prices without sacrificing the quality of your product or you can also offer additional services that your competitors don’t have.

Marketing Strategy

  • Think of how you will market your business.
  • How will you advertise your business?
  • You can promote using social media platforms, send out flyers, make posters, make door-to-door advertising, or whichever strategy you think will work best for your business.
  • With an effective marketing strategy, people will get curious about what you sell and this will push the consumers to try your product or service.

Tips on writing a business plan.

A business plan template is a framework to help you write a business plan. A good template should show you the areas that you need to cover in the plan and provide you with questions that should be answered throughout the plan.

We are exposing you to business planning to help you understand the many things that have to be considered when developing and managing a business. As you experience your own business start-up you will also realize that things don’t always go as planned in business. You will need to learn to adopt your plan for the many changing variables in business.

As you go through the business planning section, don’t let planning stop you from moving ahead in learning about business. You will find it difficult at first, but once you work with the frameworks, you will move through it rather quickly.

Our goal is for you to get some business planning experience and not to turn you off of business, because of the planning that you have to do. Do what makes sense for you, but the more shortcuts you take, will affect the success of your business.

How to Write a Business Plan (Plus Examples & Templates)

Have you ever wondered how to write a business plan step by step? Mike Andes, told us: 

This guide will help you write a business plan to impress investors.

Throughout this process, we’ll get information from Mike Andes, who started Augusta Lawn Care Services when he was 12 and turned it into a franchise with over 90 locations. He has gone on to help others learn how to write business plans and start businesses.  He knows a thing or two about writing  business plans!

We’ll start by discussing the definition of a business plan. Then we’ll discuss how to come up with the idea, how to do the market research, and then the important elements in the business plan format. Keep reading to start your journey!

What Is a Business Plan?

A business plan is simply a road map of what you are trying to achieve with your business and how you will go about achieving it. It should cover all elements of your business including: 

  • Finding customers
  • Plans for developing a team
  •  Competition
  • Legal structures
  • Key milestones you are pursuing

Get a Business Idea

Before you can write a business plan, you have to have a business idea. You may see a problem that needs to be solved and have an idea how to solve it, or you might start by evaluating your interests and skills. 

Mike told us, “The three things I suggest asking yourself when thinking about starting a business are:

  • What am I good at?
  • What would I enjoy doing?
  • What can I get paid for?”

If all three of these questions don’t lead to at least one common answer, it will probably be a much harder road to success. Either there is not much market for it, you won’t be good at it, or you won’t enjoy doing it. 

As Mike told us, “There’s enough stress starting and running a business that if you don’t like it or aren’t good at it, it’s hard to succeed.”

Conduct Market Analysis

Market analysis is focused on establishing if there is a target market for your products and services, how large the target market is, and identifying the demographics of people or businesses that would be interested in the product or service. The goal here is to establish how much money your business concept can make.

A search engine is your best friend when trying to figure out if there is demand for your products and services. Personally, I love using presearch.org because it lets you directly search on a ton of different platforms including Google, Youtube, Twitter, and more. Check out the screenshot for the full list of search options.

With quick web searches, you can find out how many competitors you have, look through their reviews, and see if there are common complaints about the competitors. Bad reviews are a great place to find opportunities to offer better products or services. 

If there are no similar products or services, you may have stumbled upon something new, or there may just be no demand for it. To find out, go talk to your most honest friend about the idea and see what they think. If they tell you it’s dumb or stare at you vacantly, there’s probably no market for it.

You can also conduct a survey through social media to get public opinion on your idea. Using Facebook Business Manager , you could get a feel for who would be interested in your product or service.

 I ran a quick test of how many people between 18-65  you could reach in the U.S. during a week. It returned an estimated 700-2,000 for the total number of leads, which is enough to do a fairly accurate statistical analysis.

Identify Demographics of Target Market

Depending on what type of business you want to run, your target market will be different. The narrower the demographic, the fewer potential customers you’ll have. If you did a survey, you’ll be able to use that data to help define your target audience. Some considerations you’ll want to consider are:

  • Other Interests
  • Marital Status
  • Do they have kids?

Once you have this information, it can help you narrow down your options for location and help define your marketing further. One resource that Mike recommended using is the Census Bureau’s Quick Facts Map . He told us,  

“It helps you quickly evaluate what the best areas are for your business to be located.”

How to Write a Business Plan

Now that you’ve developed your idea a little and established there is a market for it, you can begin writing a business plan. Getting started is easier with the business plan template we created for you to download. I strongly recommend using it as it is updated to make it easier to create an action plan. 

Each of the following should be a section of your business plan:

  • Business Plan Cover Page
  • Table of Contents
  • Executive Summary
  • Company Description
  • Description of Products and Services

SWOT Analysis

  • Competitor Data
  • Competitive Analysis
  • Marketing Expenses Strategy 

Pricing Strategy

  • Distribution Channel Assessment
  • Operational Plan
  • Management and Organizational Strategy
  • Financial Statements and/or Financial Projections

How to Write a Business Plan Step 1. Create a Cover Page

The first thing investors will see is the cover page for your business plan. Make sure it looks professional. A great cover page shows that you think about first impressions.

A good business plan should have the following elements on a cover page:

  • Professionally designed logo
  • Company name
  • Mission or Vision Statement
  • Contact Info

Basically, think of a cover page for your business plan like a giant business card. It is meant to capture people’s attention but be quickly processed.

How to Write a Business Plan Step 2. Create a Table of Contents

Most people are busy enough that they don’t have a lot of time. Providing a table of contents makes it easy for them to find the pages of your plan that are meaningful to them.

A table of contents will be immediately after the cover page, but you can include it after the executive summary. Including the table of contents immediately after the executive summary will help investors know what section of your business plan they want to review more thoroughly.

Check out Canva’s article about creating a  table of contents . It has a ton of great information about creating easy access to each section of your business plan. Just remember that you’ll want to use different strategies for digital and hard copy business plans.

How to Write a Business Plan Step 3. Write an Executive Summary

An executive summary is where your business plan should catch the readers interest.  It doesn’t need to be long, but should be quick and easy to read.

Mike told us,

How long should an executive summary bein an informal business plan?

For casual use, an executive summary should be similar to an elevator pitch, no more than 150-160 words, just enough to get them interested and wanting more. Indeed has a great article on elevator pitches .  This can also be used for the content of emails to get readers’ attention.

It consists of three basic parts:

  • An introduction to you and your business.
  • What your business is about.
  • A call to action

Example of an informal executive summary 

One of the best elevator pitches I’ve used is:

So far that pitch has achieved a 100% success rate in getting partnerships for the business.

What should I include in an executive summary for investors?

Investors are going to need a more detailed executive summary if you want to secure financing or sell equity. The executive summary should be a brief overview of your entire business plan and include:

  • Introduction of yourself and company.
  • An origin story (Recognition of a problem and how you came to solution)
  • An introduction to your products or services.
  • Your unique value proposition. Make sure to include intellectual property.
  • Where you are in the business life cycle
  • Request and why you need it.

Successful business plan examples

When to write an executive summary?

Even though the summary is near the beginning of a business plan, you should write it after you complete the rest of a business plan. You can’t talk about revenue, profits, and expected expenditures if you haven’t done the market research and created a financial plan.

These are things that people will want to know later, but they don’t hook the reader. They won’t spark interest in your small business, but they’ll close the deal.

How to Write a Business Plan Step 4. Company Description

Every business plan should include a company description. A great business plan will include the following elements while describing the company:

  • Mission statement
  • Philosophy and vision
  • Company goals

Target market

  • Legal structure

Let’s take a look at what each section includes in a good business plan.

Mission Statement

A mission statement is a brief explanation of why you started the company and what the company’s main focus is. It should be no more than one or two sentences. Check out HubSpot’s article 27 Inspiring Mission Statement for a great read on informative and inspiring mission and vision statements. 

Company Philosophy and Vision

The company philosophy is what drives your company. You’ll normally hear them called core values.  These are the building blocks that make your company different. You want to communicate your values to customers, business owners, and investors as often as possible to build a company culture, but make sure to back them up.

What makes your company different?

Each company is different. Your new business should rise above the standard company lines of honesty, integrity, fun, innovation, and community when communicating your business values. The standard answers are corporate jargon and lack authenticity. 

Examples of core values

One of my clients decided to add a core values page to their website. As a tech company they emphasized the values:

  •  Prioritize communication.
  •  Never stop learning.
  •  Be transparent.
  •  Start small and grow incrementally.

These values communicate how the owner and the rest of the company operate. They also show a value proposition and competitive advantage because they specifically focus on delivering business value from the start. These values also genuinely show what the company is about and customers recognize the sincerity. Indeed has a great blog about how to identify your core values .

What is a vision statement?

A vision statement communicate the long lasting change a business pursues. The vision helps investors and customers understand what your company is trying to accomplish. The vision statement goes beyond a mission statement to provide something meaningful to the community, customer’s lives, or even the world.

Example vision statements

The Alzheimer’s Association is a great example of a vision statement:

A world without Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia.

It clearly tells how they want to change the world. A world without Alzheimers might be unachievable, but that means they always have room for improvement.

Business Goals

You have to measure success against goals for a business plan to be meaningful. A business plan helps guide a company similar to how your GPS provides a road map to your favorite travel destination. A goal to make as much money as possible is not inspirational and sounds greedy.

Sure, business owners want to increase their profits and improve customer service, but they need to present an overview of what they consider success. The goals should help everyone prioritize their work.

How far in advance should a business plan?

Business planning should be done at least one year in advance, but many banks and investors prefer three to five year business plans. Longer plans show investors that the management team  understands the market and knows the business is operating in a constantly shifting market. In addition, a plan helps businesses to adjust to changes because they have already considered how to handle them.

Example of great business goals

My all time-favorite long-term company goals are included in Tesla’s Master Plan, Part Deux . These goals were written in 2016 and drive the company’s decisions through 2026. They are the reason that investors are so forgiving when Elon Musk continually fails to meet his quarterly and annual goals.

If the progress aligns with the business plan investors are likely to continue to believe in the company. Just make sure the goals are reasonable or you’ll be discredited (unless you’re Elon Musk).

You did target market research before creating a business plan. Now it’s time to add it to the plan so others understand what your ideal customer looks like. As a new business owner, you may not be considered an expert in your field yet, so document everything. Make sure the references you use are from respectable sources. 

Use information from the specific lender when you are applying for lending. Most lenders provide industry research reports and using their data can strengthen the position of your business plan.

A small business plan should include a section on the external environment. Understanding the industry is crucial because we don’t plan a business in a vacuum. Make sure to research the industry trends, competitors, and forecasts. I personally prefer IBIS World for my business research. Make sure to answer questions like:

  • What is the industry outlook long-term and short-term?
  • How will your business take advantage of projected industry changes and trends?
  • What might happen to your competitors and how will your business successfully compete?

Some helpful resources to help you establish more about your industry are:

  • Trade Associations
  • Federal Reserve
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics

Legal Structure

There are five basic types of legal structures that most people will utilize:

  • Sole proprietorships
  • Limited Liability Companies (LLC)

Partnerships

Corporations.

  • Franchises.

Each business structure has their pros and cons. An LLC is the most common legal structure due to its protection of personal assets and ease of setting up. Make sure to specify how ownership is divided and what roles each owner plays when you have more than one business owner.

You’ll have to decide which structure is best for you, but we’ve gathered information on each to make it easier.

Sole Proprietorship

A sole proprietorship is the easiest legal structure to set up but doesn’t protect the owner’s personal assets from legal issues. That means if something goes wrong, you could lose both your company and your home.

To start a sole proprietorship, fill out a special tax form called a  Schedule C . Sole proprietors can also join the American Independent Business Alliance .

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

An LLC is the most common business structure used in the United States because an LLC protects the owner’s personal assets. It’s similar to partnerships and corporations, but can be a single-member LLC in most states. An LLC requires a document called an operating agreement.

Each state has different requirements. Here’s a link to find your state’s requirements . Delaware and Nevada are common states to file an LLC because they are really business-friendly. Here’s a blog on the top 10 states to get an LLC.

Partnerships are typically for legal firms. If you choose to use a partnership choose a Limited Liability Partnership. Alternatively, you can just use an LLC.

Corporations are typically for massive organizations. Corporations have taxes on both corporate and income tax so unless you plan on selling stock, you are better off considering an LLC with S-Corp status . Investopedia has good information corporations here .

This makes it where an entrepreneur can benefit from the reputation of an established business that has already worked out many of the kinks of starting from scratch.

How to Write a Business Plan Step 5. Products and Services

This section of the business plan should focus on what you sell, how you source it, and how you sell it. You should include:

  • Unique features that differentiate your business products from competitors
  • Intellectual property
  • Your supply chain
  • Cost and pricing structure 

Questions to answer about your products and services

Mike gave us a list  of the most important questions to answer about your product and services:

  • How will you be selling the product? (in person, ecommerce, wholesale, direct to consumer)?
  • How do you let them know they need a product?
  • How do you communicate the message?
  • How will you do transactions?
  • How much will you be selling it for?
  • How many do you think you’ll sell and why?

How to Write a Business Plan Step 6. Sales and Marketing Plan

The marketing and sales plan is focused on the strategy to bring awareness to your company and guides how you will get the product to the consumer.  It should contain the following sections:

SWOT Analysis stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Not only do you want to identify them, but you also want to document how the business plans to deal with them.

Business owners need to do a thorough job documenting how their service or product stacks up against the competition.

If proper research isn’t done, investors will be able to tell that the owner hasn’t researched the competition and is less likely to believe that the team can protect its service from threats by the more well-established competition. This is one of the most common parts of a presentation that trips up business owners presenting on Shark Tank .

SWOT Examples

Examples of strengths and weaknesses could be things like the lack of cash flow, intellectual property ownership, high costs of suppliers, and customers’ expectations on shipping times.

Opportunities could be ways to capitalize on your strengths or improve your weaknesses, but may also be gaps in the industry. This includes:

  • Adding offerings that fit with your current small business
  • Increase sales to current customers
  • Reducing costs through bulk ordering
  • Finding ways to reduce inventory
  •  And other areas you can improve

Threats will normally come from outside of the company but could also be things like losing a key member of the team. Threats normally come from competition, regulations, taxes, and unforeseen events.

The management team should use the SWOT analysis to guide other areas of business planning, but it absolutely has to be done before a business owner starts marketing. 

Include Competitor Data in Your Business Plan

When you plan a business, taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of the competition is key to navigating the field. Providing an overview of your competition and where they are headed shows that you are invested in understanding the industry.

For smaller businesses, you’ll want to search both the company and the owners names to see what they are working on. For publicly held corporations, you can find their quarterly and annual reports on the SEC website .

What another business plans to do can impact your business. Make sure to include things that might make it attractive for bigger companies to outsource to a small business.

Marketing Strategy

The marketing and sales part of business plans should be focused on how you are going to make potential customers aware of your business and then sell to them.

If you haven’t already included it, Mike recommends:

“They’ll want to know about Demographics, ages, and wealth of your target market.”

Make sure to include the Total addressable market .  The term refers to the value if you captured 100% of the market.

Advertising Strategy

You’ll explain what formats of advertising you’ll be using. Some possibilities are:

  • Online: Facebook and Google are the big names to work with here.
  • Print : Print can be used to reach broad groups or targeted markets. Check out this for tips .
  • Radio : iHeartMedia is one of the best ways to advertise on the radio
  • Cable television : High priced, hard to measure ROI, but here’s an explanation of the process
  • Billboards: Attracting customers with billboards can be beneficial in high traffic areas.

You’ll want to define how you’ll be using each including frequency, duration, and cost. If you have the materials already created, including pictures or links to the marketing to show creative assets.

Mike told us “Most businesses are marketing digitally now due to Covid, but that’s not always the right answer.”

Make sure the marketing strategy will help team members or external marketing agencies stay within the brand guidelines .

This section of a business plan should be focused on pricing. There are a ton of pricing strategies that may work for different business plans. Which one will work for you depends on what kind of a business you run.

Some common pricing strategies are:

  • Value-based pricing – Commonly used with home buying and selling or other products that are status symbols.
  • Skimming pricing – Commonly seen in video game consoles, price starts off high to recoup expenses quickly, then reduces over time.
  • Competition-based pricing – Pricing based on competitors’ pricing is commonly seen at gas stations.
  • Freemium services –  Commonly used for software, where there is a free plan, then purchase options for more functionality.

Beyond explaining what strategy your business plans to use, you should include references for how you came to this pricing strategy and how it will impact your cash flow.

Distribution Plan

This part of a business plan is focused on how the product or service is going to go through the supply chain. These may include multiple divisions or multiple companies. Make sure to include any parts of the workflow that are automated so investors can see where cost savings are expected and when.

Supply Chain Examples

For instance, lawn care companies  would need to cover aspects such as:

  • Suppliers for lawn care equipment and tools
  • Any chemicals or treatments needed
  • Repair parts for sprinkler systems
  • Vehicles to transport equipment and employees
  • Insurance to protect the company vehicles and people.

Examples of Supply Chains

These are fairly flat supply chains compared to something like a clothing designer where the clothes would go through multiple vendors. A clothing company might have the following supply chain:

  • Raw materials
  • Shipping of raw materials
  • Converting of raw materials to thread
  • Shipping thread to produce garments
  • Garment producer
  • Shipping to company
  • Company storage
  • Shipping to retail stores

There have been advances such as print on demand that eliminate many of these steps. If you are designing completely custom clothing, all of this would need to be planned to keep from having business disruptions.

The main thing to include in the business plan is the list of suppliers, the path the supply chain follows, the time from order to the customer’s home, and the costs associated with each step of the process.

According to BizPlanReview , a business plan without this information is likely to get rejected because they have failed to research the key elements necessary to make sales to the customer.

How to Write a Business Plan Step 7. Company Organization and Operational Plan

This part of the business plan is focused on how the business model will function while serving customers.  The business plan should provide an overview of  how the team will manage the following aspects:

  • Legal environment

Let’s look at each for some insight.

Production has already been discussed in previous sections so I won’t go into it much. When writing a business plan for investors, try to avoid repetition as it creates a more simple business plan.

If the organizational plan will be used by the team as an overview of how to perform the best services for the customer, then redundancy makes more sense as it communicates what is important to the business.

Quality control policies help to keep the team focused on how to verify that the company adheres to the business plan and meets or exceeds customer expectations.

Quality control can be anything from a standard that says “all labels on shirts can be no more than 1/16″ off center” to a defined checklist of steps that should be performed and filled out for every customer.

There are a variety of organizations that help define quality control including:

  • International Organization for Standardization – Quality standards for energy, technology, food, production environments, and cybersecurity
  • AICPA – Standard defined for accounting.
  • The Joint Commission – Healthcare
  • ASHRAE – HVAC best practices

You can find lists of the organizations that contribute most to the government regulation of industries on Open Secrets . Research what the leaders in your field are doing. Follow their example and implement it in your quality control plan.

For location, you should use information from the market research to establish where the location will be. Make sure to include the following in the location documentation.

  • The size of your location
  • The type of building (retail, industrial, commercial, etc.)
  • Zoning restrictions – Urban Wire has a good map on how zoning works in each state
  • Accessibility – Does it meet ADA requirements?
  • Costs including rent, maintenance, utilities, insurance and any buildout or remodeling costs
  • Utilities – b.e.f. has a good energy calculator .

Legal Environment

The legal requirement section is focused on defining how to meet the legal requirements for your industry. A good business plan should include all of the following:

  • Any licenses and/or permits that are needed and whether you’ve obtained them
  • Any trademarks, copyrights, or patents that you have or are in the process of applying for
  • The insurance coverage your business requires and how much it costs
  • Any environmental, health, or workplace regulations affecting your business
  • Any special regulations affecting your industry
  • Bonding requirements, if applicable

Your local SBA office can help you establish requirements in your area. I strongly recommend using them. They are a great resource.

Your business plan should include a plan for company organization and hiring. While you may be the only person with the company right now, down the road you’ll need more people. Make sure to consider and document the answers to the following questions:

  • What is the current leadership structure and what will it look like in the future?
  • What types of employees will you have? Are there any licensing or educational requirements?
  • How many employees will you need?
  • Will you ever hire freelancers or independent contractors?
  • What is each position’s job description?
  • What is the pay structure (hourly, salaried, base plus commission, etc.)?
  • How do you plan to find qualified employees and contractors?

One of the most crucial parts of a business plan is the organizational chart. This simply shows the positions the company will need, who is in charge of them and the relationship of each of them. It will look similar to this:

How to Write a Business Plan Step 8. Financial Statements 

No business plan is complete without financial statements or financial projections. The business plan format will be different based on whether you are writing a business plan to expand a business or a startup business plan. Let’s dig deeper into each.

Provide All Financial Income from an Existing Business

An existing business should use their past financial documents including the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement to find trends to estimate the next 3-5 years.

You can create easy trendlines in excel to predict future revenue, profit and loss, cash flow, and other changes in year-over-year performance. This will show your expected performance assuming business continues as normal.

If you are seeking an investment, then the business is probably not going to continue as normal. Depending on the financial plan and the purpose of getting financing, adjustments may be needed to the following:

  • Higher Revenue if expanding business
  • Lower Cost of Goods Sold if purchasing inventory with bulk discounts
  • Adding interest if utilizing financing (not equity deal)
  • Changes in expenses
  • Addition of financing information to the cash flow statement
  • Changes in Earnings per Share on the balance sheet

Financial modeling is a challenging subject, but there are plenty of low-cost courses on the subject. If you need help planning your business financial documentation take some time to watch some of them.

Make it a point to document how you calculated all the changes to the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement in your business plan so that key team members or investors can verify your research.

Financial Projections For A Startup Business Plan

Unlike an existing business, a startup doesn’t have previous success to model its future performance. In this scenario, you need to focus on how to make a business plan realistic through the use of industry research and averages.

Mike gave the following advice in his interview:

Financial Forecasting Mistakes

One of the things a lot of inexperienced people use is the argument, “If I get one percent of the market, it is worth $100 million.” If you use this, investors are likely to file the document under bad business plan examples.

Let’s use custom t-shirts as an example.

Credence Research estimated in 2018 there were 11,334,800,000 custom t-shirts sold for a total of $206.12 Billion, with a 6% compound annual growth rate.

With that data,  you can calculate that the industry will grow to $270 Billion in 2023 and that the average shirt sold creates $18.18 in revenue.

Combine that with an IBIS World estimate of 11,094 custom screen printers and that means even if you become an average seller, you’ll get .009% of the market.

The point here is to make sure your business proposal examples make sense.

You’ll need to know industry averages such as cost of customer acquisition, revenue per customer, the average cost of goods sold, and admin costs to be able to create accurate estimates.

What is a business plan without a plan on how to obtain funding?

The Small Business Administration has an example for a pizza restaurant that theoretically needed nearly $20k to make it through their first month.

In our video, How to Start a $500K/Year T-Shirt Business (Pt. 1 ), Sanford Booth told us he needed about $200,000 to start his franchise and broke even after 4 months.

Freshbooks estimates it takes on average 2-3 years for a business to be profitable, which means the fictitious pizza company from the SBA could need up to $330k to make it through that time and still pay their bills for their home and pizza shop.

Not every business needs that much to start, but realistically it’s a good idea to assume that you need a fairly large cushion.

Ways to get funding for a small business

There are a variety of ways to cover this. the most common are:

  • Bootstrapping – Using your savings without external funding.
  • Taking out debt – loans, credit cards
  • Equity, Seed Funding – Ownership of a percentage of the company in exchange for current funds
  • Crowdsourcing – Promising a good for funding to create the product

We're going to walk you through the process of how to start an advertising agency so you can begin your path to success in digital marketing.

We talked to Jason Yormark, founder and Chief Social Officer of Socialistics , about how he started his company and has 4x the revenue since starting it 2.5 years ago.

He started off with Microsoft then started blogging during a year layoff before getting hired back.

He started the Socialistics advertising agency as a side project but has grown it to managing $2-5K social media marketing campaigns for 15 clients, including Habitat for Humanity and the U.S. Air Force .

We'll give you everything you need to know when starting an advertising agency, including an overview of the industry, developing the business concept, getting all the licensing/business requirements, commonly asked questions about advertising and marketing, strategies for launching, and business operations.

Advertising Industry Overview

Business owners in all industries need marketing. Most small businesses don't have the time and knowledge to run their own ad campaigns, so there's a ton of opportunity for starting a new business in marketing or advertising.

Let's start by discussing the state of the industry. Because of the global pandemic, marketing spending dropped to $1.28 Trillion in 2020 according to PQ media . Jason experienced a drop in revenue which he attributes to:

I saw similar results in my marketing and blogging business from February through September of last year and then spending started ramping up again.

This year I've been getting approximately 3x the requests of previous years, which I attribute to my business maturing, combined with more business confidence.

Despite a drop in overall spending, according to Beroe Inc , global digital marketing was between $330-340 billion in 2020 and grew almost 13% over 2019.

Meanwhile, spending on legacy advertising formats like TV, billboards, and radio declined by 30%.

According to Safe Frog Marketing Group (through Hubspot), nearly 2/3 of companies hire an advertising agency or freelancer to manage part of their digital marketing needs. 

Combine this with the number of marketing companies staying the same ,and spending on advertising expected to increase by 8-15% according to Forbes , this is the perfect time for starting an advertising agency.

One of the opportunities Jason told us about in digital advertising is the ability to attract potential clients with reduced retainers. Here's what he had to say,

Major Advertising Agencies and Other Competitors

Globally, the 50 largest marketing/advertising agencies make over $460 million in revenue or more. The top ad agency, Accenture Interactive made over $4.4 Billion in 2018. Wow! They are killing it! If you want to see the full list check out this article by Agency Spotter.

According to IBIS World , there are 5,585 digital advertising agencies in the United States, so there is a ton of competition, but plenty of revenue to start your own agency and work for your ideal client.

I did a little estimation of what the average marketing agency makes based on these numbers, and it's around $20 million.

Granted, some aren't going to be anywhere near this, but even if you are making $75,000+ working from home as a one-man company, that's not bad money.

Currently 2 years in, I make enough working part-time to pay the bills without stressing. It's not nearly what Jason estimated:

The first step when you want to start an ad agency is to conduct research to determine what is right for you. Your marketing company should be focused on satisfying your potential client's marketing needs while utilizing your current skill base. 

You may want to start a marketing company focused on a specific niche, such as Business to Business (B2B) or Business to Customer (B2C), a general marketing company, or you may want to start a digital marketing firm focused primarily on a specific social media network like Facebook.

You aren’t limited to just one type, but this decision will impact how to start a media company. This decision will drive every move going forward.

Name Your Marketing Company

I can't stress enough the importance of the name you choose when starting a marketing company. It will communicate what the company is all about. Keep reading for ideas about how to name your startup marketing agency.

Does the name explain the business?

Socialistics' name is a bit of a challenge for me to picture what it does. The name is unique, but here's how I break it down:

Social - " of or relating to human society , the interaction of the individual and the group, or the welfare of human beings as members of society" - Merriam-Webster Dictionary

-istics- "of, relating to, or characteristic of" -  Merriam-Webster Dictionary

It took me a minute to wrap my mind around the name to realize it meant relating to social media. I wonder whether Jason was going for something that made people think more about what it does.

He could be taking the exact opposite strategy of what I'd normally suggest, which could potentially offer similar results.

I tend to prefer including words like Marketing, Advertising, or something to identify what your company actually does, which can make it easier for people to think of it when they are looking for help.

Is it easy to spell?

Make sure your business name is easy to remember when using a search engine. A crazy name like Onomatopoeia Tees makes searching for your business difficult because it's hard to spell.

Because people tend to type fast, it can be helpful to register domain names for common misspellings of your business name and forward them to your website to make it easier for customers to find you.

Including your state, county, or city identifies you as a local business. For example, Sin City Modeling Agency would obviously be focused on models in Las Vegas.

I would typically discourage this for a marketing company unless you are specifically trying to narrow your business model to serve clients in the local area.

There is too much remote work available to limit yourself from the start. Later it might make sense, but in the beginning, it can be hard to get that first big client.

Does your name fit your branding? Some business owners focus on visual ideas for a logo before a name. Fortunately, Socialistics logo spells out what they do for people. Take a look:

As you can see, it has their name and "a social media agency."

The "S" in the logo also hints at one of the advantages of social media marketing: the fact that internet marketing offers a closed-loop marketing strategy, while other forms of advertising do not.

Overall, I like it. It tells what the company does, suggests differentiation to those who know about the industry, and also could have ties to their belief in community service because what we put out into the world comes back to us.

Register a .com

Find a name for which the .com domain is available. It's the most recognizable. You can conduct a search by clicking here . The longer you can purchase it for, the better. This helps communicate that you are in it for the long haul.

Test Your Name!

See how people like it. Check Google Trends. Read articles like Five Tools for Naming a Business.

Make sure to check what happens if people shorten it. You wouldn't want to name a business Sensational Product Advertising & Marketing because people might shorten it to SPAM, and that goes right to junk mail.

Once you're satisfied with the name, register your business name with the government so you can protect someone else from getting it.

How to Start an Online Advertising Agency

Legally Establish the Advertisement Agency

You've developed a plan and created a name for your advertising agency. It's time to create the legal structure.

For best results, hire legal representation that has experience starting advertising agencies, like an attorney, accountant, or tax specialist.

There are five basic types of legal structures that most people will utilize: sole proprietorships, Limited Liability Corporations (LLC), Partnerships, Corporations, and Franchises.

Each has its pros and cons. You'll have to decide which is best for you, but we've gathered information on each to make it easier.

A sole proprietorship is the easiest way to start a digital ad company, but the structure doesn't protect the owner's personal assets from legal issues. That means if something goes wrong, you could lose both your agency and your home.

This structure is the least difficult to set up, but I'd recommend agencies getting professional liability insurance and cybersecurity insurance because you'll be a potential entry point to clients' systems.

If your website, email, or other services get hacked, it could be detrimental to more than just your agency: it could cause client lawsuits.

To start a sole proprietorship, fill out a special tax form called a  Schedule C . Sole proprietors can also join the American Independent Business Alliance .

Limited Liability Corporation (LLC)

An LLC is the most common business structure used in the United States because an LLC protects the owner's personal assets.

It's similar to partnerships and corporations, but can be a single-member LLC in most states. An LLC requires a document called an operating agreement.

Partnerships and Corporations

Partnerships and corporations are typically for massive organizations or legal firms.

Unless there is a specific reason you need a partnership, it is better to do a multi-person LLC. Investopedia has good information about partnerships and corporations here .

If you don't work with a legal representative, make sure to talk to the employees who work in the licensing and tax offices. They can give you advice on which licenses you actually need.

Make it a point to follow the laws. I once met a person who failed to follow the proper regulations, and it cost her a substantial fine and nearly 100 hours of community service per month.

Obtain Funding

Ad Agency startup costs can be achieved for under $1,000. You basically need some space in your home, a website, social media, and some time.

If you are going to rent an office space or run a ton of paid ad campaigns, the cost goes dramatically up.

That's not really necessary unless you are starting a franchise or have a local team that needs a space to all work together. When it's just you, an advertising agency can be started for less than a few hundred per month.

If you do need to obtain external funding, other options include:

  • Loan from family or friends
  • Business partner(s)
  • Government programs

Establish a Location

Some things to consider if you go other routes are:

  • How many people will come to a client meeting?
  • How can I display my campaigns?
  • Does space encourage the exchange of ideas?
  • How quickly is the company growing?
  • Will we have a sales team to answer client calls?
  • Are we 24/7 because we offer services across the world?

A website is critical to a marketing company. It's often the first thing people see, and if the job isn't done right, why should they trust you to do their advertising right?

From a marketing perspective, your website needs to show you get results. But what does that mean?

Some things I look for when I search for businesses include:

  • Do they come up when I search them? With Target, Yes they do.
  • Does it show Wikipedia or Google My Business information in the search? If not, make sure you fix that.
  • When I click on the link, how fast does it load? I want instantaneous on desktop or less than 3 seconds if over cell phone data. Any less, and you are losing customers. Google has extensive data on what is expected to rank high in search.
  • Now that I'm on the site, does it look professional? If not, I'm probably going to run unless I can tell they use it for experimentation.

Building a great website is so important. Fortunately, there's a lot of things that make it easy. Using web builders has never been easier. They have tons of plugins and drag-and-drop functionality. I'd recommend the following:

  • Easiest to use: Wix
  • Best features: Wordpress
  • Other Options: Great List

Alternatively, you can hire a web developer, but they'll probably charge you up to $25k to do the same setup you would anyways. They just accomplish it quicker because they know what they are doing.

Create Social Media Profiles

I'd recommend having all possible social media profiles because you never know where you'll find a client. For B2B, the best is LinkedIn , but I'd also make sure you are on:

  • YouTube - Best for Video 
  • Instagram - Best for products and other marketing that uses pictures
  • Facebook - Best for B2C marketing
  • Twitter - Financial markets, political, and crypto are big industries on Twitter
  • TikTok - Short fun videos primarily targeted to ages 30 and under

You can start with one and focus on it or try them all and narrow them down based on the results. Hootsuite has some good information on best practices . You'll need to keep up to date on these if you are starting an advertising agency.

Have a tech stack that simplifies the operations of your advertising agency

Every advertising agency will need a tech stack to make running the business easier.

I'm not going to go into great detail on each of them as they all have great educational resources available that I suggest you utilize as you'll be using them a lot. Here's the list of some I love:

  • HootSuite or other social media management tools that put all your social accounts in one place and let you manage it from their dashboard.
  • Google Workspace for email, spreadsheets, presentations, and cloud storage.
  • Integrated accounting software that connects to your bank and allows automation so you only have to set a rule once. PC Mag has a great article about various options.
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to keep all your information in one place. Agencies have a ton of content they handle for a lot of clients. Being able to keep track of it in one place is crucial for the success of the business.
  • Content Management Software (CMS) is used for storing, labeling, and sorting content. A CMS may be part of a CRM, or it may have to be integrated, but easy access to files is critical to assist clients.
  • Analytics Software will be needed and attached to all web assets so you can track how you are performing . This will be true for both the advertising agency and your clients. You can't improve results if you aren't measuring them.

These are the bare minimum I would suggest before starting an advertising agency.

Business Expansion

Now that you have everything you need to start an advertising agency, it's time to find clients and expand the business.

Marketing and Advertising Strategy for an Advertising Agency

Finding clients can be done in a variety of ways. Agencies can use their personal network, the same ad strategies you plan to use for clients, conventions, and other techniques. The biggest thing is to be sincere.

Jason told us about how he managed to land the Air Force and Habitat for Humanity. He told us,

In other words, always be ready to listen because that might be enough to land a client.

Potential Partnerships and Collaborations for an Advertising Agency

Partnerships and collaboration for an advertising agency may come from selling other tech that they find useful, being listed in blogs and reviews, or through fields like photographers, graphic designers, and developers.

Another source of partnerships is non-profit institutions. As Jason pointed out:

If you can get a client that people know and share their values, it makes expansion so much easier.

Contact List Building for an Advertising Agency

Every person you come in contact with is a referral. Anything you do you should be trying to get followers, likes, and people signing up for your email list.

This makes a huge difference. You can then share more content with them to help them get closer to becoming a client. Even if they don't own a business one day, they might soon.

Some useful tools include:

  • Hubspot - Free email marketing tools, including forms, databases, analytics, and templates
  • MailChimp   - Similar to Hubspot’s marketing services but started as an email marketing company.
  • SendGrid   - Most of my software development clients prefer SendGrid. It’s more tech-heavy though

Advertising Agency Daily Operations

An advertising agency makes its money from retainers and is mostly a time-intensive business.

The reason digital marketers use scheduling tools for as much of their work as possible is they need someone to be available when their clients need them.

People tend to use Facebook at specific times every day. If no one is available to respond to comments because they are working on something else, that is going to harm the advertising agency's clients.

If you are unable to satisfy your clients' needs, they'll go somewhere else.

Jason focuses on "service over revenue growth" because the revenue growth will come with time.

As long as they retain the customers they have, they know they'll have around $40k/month coming in consistently while managing 15 clients.

Before you even consider operating a trucking company, you should:

  • Get a DMV printout: If you have a DUI, vehicular manslaughter, or other charges, you will not be able to get a job or insurance.
  • Have no convictions for drugs, felonies, violent crimes, or fraud: It will be difficult or impossible to qualify for a job, insurance, or getting an authority.
  • Check insurance price: . Mikael spends $45,000 per year for his insurance because he is a new CDL driver.
  • Understand Finances: Every load you accept will have costs that impact it. Real simply, if you can’t multiply and calculate percentages, you are likely to struggle immensely. You need to be able to calculate the costs based on mileage and the weight of load. To make good money, you’ll need each load to be at least three times the cost.

Most of us are familiar with trucking on some level, whether it's seeing big rigs on the road or utilizing local moving companies. Behind the products we receive from those giant trucks, plenty of government regulations ensure every trucking company delivers products safely.

If you haven’t worked in a trucking company, it’s important to get some industry experience and specific licenses. You might want to work with a moving company to learn about the industry.

How do truckers make money?

Very simply, truckers make money based on miles and weight as they transport products. A trucking company operates under one of four main NAICS codes:

  • 48412 Long Distance Trucking
  • 48411 Local Freight Trucking
  • 48422 Local Specialized Freight Trucking
  • 49222 Courier and Local Deliver Services

Trucking businesses charge different amounts based on what they are hauling and where they are hauling it. I combined the IBIS World statistics for the four sectors and found that the industry makes $557.2 billion in annual revenue and $33.2 billion in profit. Check out the rest of my findings below:

How much can you make owning your own trucking company?

The average trucking company has over $410K in revenue. Specialized freight makes the most at over $860K, while the others earn far less. If you plan to start a trucking company, it’s reasonable to assume you will make no more than the following amounts during each of the first few years.

  • Long Distance Freight : $461K
  • Couriers : $364K
  • Local Freight : $282K

Is owning a trucking business profitable?

Yes, owning a trucking company can be highly profitable. The average trucker makes around $54K per year in wages and another $6,000 in profits, assuming they meet industry averages.

Mikael currently makes over $135K per year. He only drives in case of emergencies and pays his drivers to do most of the driving. So it can be highly profitable to start a trucking company without driving consistently.

New trucking businesses

More and more truckers choose to go out on their own once they have gotten some experience. In fact, owner-operators have the highest rate of solo entrepreneurs in the United States. 

That’s because they can make a great living. Assuming the 4.2% rent is helping pay off their homes, that means the average business owner is paying off around $17,000 of their mortgage as a business expense.

Follow Commercial Truck Regulations

When you start a trucking company, it is important to understand you are entering one of the most regulated industries in the United States. If you provide long haul services, you’ll need to register with multiple agencies including:

  • Department of Transportation
  • Department of Labor
  • State Agencies (in every state you operate in)

Mikael told us:

He also told us:

[su_quote] I focus mostly on running the business, but there are times when I have to drive too. It cost $4,500 to get my CDL. [/su_quote]

All of these costs add up, of course. Let's have a look at the hard numbers so there are no surprises when you start to pay your startup expenses.

How much does it cost to start a trucking business?

You’ll want at least $50K-$60K to start a trucking company. Mikael explained the startup costs for a trucking company, which include the following:

  • Truck : $32,000 (10 years or newer)
  • Refurbished Trailer : $9,500 (currently worth $30K)
  • Repairs : $6,000
  • Fuel : $2,000 (first week)
  • Insurance : $4,500 (down payment and first month)
  • Permit : $950 per truck
  • IFTA : $2,800 to get cross-country license plates
  • Total : $57,750

The good news is:

How to start a trucking company with no money

Yes, many major transportation businesses offer company drivers the ability to transition to owner-operators after working with them for a certain amount of time. They do this by setting up brokerages, leasing companies, and load boards.

The leasing company leases the owner-operator a truck in exchange for the truck company owner committing to a multi-year contract with them. At the end of the contract, you have your own trucking company and truck owned outright.

We’ll discuss the leases more in later sections, but first let's check out more resources to learn how to start a trucking company.

There are industry organizations that you’ll want to follow to stay up to date on the trucking industry. These are some of the biggest in the U.S.

  • American Trucking Association (ATA) : The ATA is the largest group that collects industry data, lobbies for the industry, and provides info for trucking companies, moving companies, suppliers, and companies that need shipping.
  • Transport Topics : This group publishes a variety of information about the industry including a Top 100 For-Hire list. FYI you need to make $244 million or more to be in the top 100.
  • US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) : The EPA is tasked with regulating environmental concerns. Remember to pay attention to their rules involving trucking and agriculture because most trucking companies will be impacted.
  • US Energy Information Administration (EIA) : Be sure to pay attention to the transportation reports from the EIA if you haul oil and refined products.
  • America's Independent Truckers' Association Inc. (AITA) : Larry Daniel started AITA in 1997 to give independent truckers the same purchasing power as major conglomerates. It’s $10 per year for membership or $180 for fleets. If you find better discounts anywhere, they ask you to gather as much information as possible and send it to them so they can secure the same deal for all.

Identify the target market

Your target market will mostly be businesses when you open your new trucking company. Depending on the type of truck, you might want to build relationships with different kinds of businesses. Some businesses that consistently need truckers include:

  • Distributors
  • Car manufacturers
  • Agricultural businesses
  • Marijuana growing facilities
  • Moving companies
  • Car dealerships

You’ll want to build relationships with load boards and brokers like datboard and truckstop.com , but Mikael also wins a lot of business with word of mouth recommendations. You’ll probably also want to consider seasonal fluctuations. Mikael told us:

[su_quote] Everything is good during winter. $75K monthly and summers around $125K. Potato season is July to November, but our best run on a per-mile basis was Oregon to Phoenix. It totaled $6 a mile or around $9,000. [/su_quote]

It can be hard to describe your market accurately, but it’s a critical assessment to make. Market research firms gather data that are good for validating your original research. It’s worth considering hiring one if you aren’t confident in your research methods.

Define your business structure

Because of the investment, you’ll probably start a trucking business as a Limited Liability Company (LLC). A trucking LLC filing as an S-Corporation is the prevailing business structure when someone starts a trucking company. 

Limited Liability Companies can opt for the business entity to be treated as an S-Corp for tax purposes. You just have to file an 1120-S with the Internal Revenue Service.

A successful trucking company will find this business entity and tax structure beneficial because they will be able to:

  • Pay themselves a salary.
  • Receive various personal liability protections.
  • Separate business and personal assets.
  • Save money on taxable income over $200,000.

Running your business in this method provides a good balance of liability protection and business structure if you choose to grow beyond a solo entrepreneur. Almost every successful trucking business will use either this structure or a C-Corporation.

You might want to hire a law firm to form your corporation because it’s easier to head off any problems as the business is formed rather than to go back and change your founding documents or business protocols once issues arise.

Choose your trucking business name

Your trucking name can reflect your geographic origins, or it can be more abstract, or even the name of the founder. Sant Lines uses Mikael’s last name.

Choosing your trucking name is an important consideration that can affect both the present and future of your business.

For example, naming your company the Trucking Business of North Carolina may attract customers in your home state that want to do business with local trucking companies, but it might hinder your expansion outside of your state.

Once you’ve determined your trucking name, run searches at your Secretary of State’s website and get a domain name from sites like GoDaddy or NameCheap .

Address start-up and operations costs

Your plan should outline the source(s) of your capital plus how and when investors will be paid back. Outline your operational costs carefully. For a trucking company, there are three main sources of operations costs:

1. Purchases

The primary costs associated with trucking are purchases including gas, maintenance, and repairs. These will be nearly ⅓ of your business expenses, so make sure to calculate them effectively. That means if you are doing long haul trucking, you should assume $153,667 of purchases per truck each year.

Your wages and any employee wages will be up to 29% of the revenue. That means you should assume you’ll be paying up to $133,690 if you are making the average amount for a long haul trucker. On average wages are around $55,000 per year across the industry.

3. Miscellaneous

The third largest expense relates to other costs like technology, miscellaneous business expenses, and taxes. These account for approximately 25% of revenue. I have created an automated 10 year calculator that estimates the revenue, expenses, and profits when considering the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and how many trucks you want to add each year. Feel free to download it and try it out.

How much does a trucking owner make?

An owner-operator will normally pay themselves a salary plus profits paid out as either a dividend or return of capital. If you run as a sole operator, you need to make sure you set your pay correctly. There are a few ways you might fall under on the Bureau of Labor Statistics site :

  • Heavy Truck Driver : $51,790
  • Operations Manager : $106,630
  • Top Executives : $109,880
  • Chief Executives : $198,610

In addition, an average trucking company would offer around $20,000–30,000 in profits which can be treated as dividends. If you pay yourself less than the $106K salary, which I suspect most would for the first few years, do not give yourself more than a $30K dividend check unless you want to risk an audit.

(I’m not a tax attorney, but I know enough that you don’t want to deal with IRS audits. If you make enough to pay yourself $200K, it is the safest bet.)

Once you’ve put together a plan, it’s time to start considering how to secure startup funding. As Mikael stated, you’ll need around $50K to $60K just to make it through the first couple of months. If you factor in the first year, you’ll need almost $300K, and to make it through the first five years you can expect to need over $2 million. These numbers do not include wages or depreciation (because depreciation is not a hard cost).

Most business owners start their trucking company with personal savings or by borrowing from friends and family, but you can also qualify for equipment financing and other loans that use the truck to back the loan. We suggest reaching out to National Business Capital first because they offer flexible financing options and work with you to find the best loan for your business from over 75 lenders.

Crowdfunding

If your business will serve a particular community or industry, you might be able to use crowdfunding to get the startup costs. Of course, you’ll normally have to offer them something like discounted pricing or a free local delivery depending on how much they contribute.

Major fleet owner-operator lease programs

While talking with one of my relatives about how to get into the trucking industry, he advised going through one of the major fleets to get financing. The way they work is they basically finance the truck in exchange for a contract of five years. After those five years, you own the truck. 

He warned that you need to be cautious with these, however. Some of the fleets are a bit shady. If you are making less than $400 per day, they aren’t doing right by you. In addition, after five years you should absolutely own the vehicle. Make sure to read the contract carefully.

I asked about the best ones. He specifically mentioned:

  • Knight Transportation (From Arizona)
  • Werner Enterprises (Based in Nebraska)
  • Schneider (Based in Wisconsin)

A trucking business isn’t hard to start, but you will have some unique requirements that most business owners do not. 

First, you’ll need to get your commercial driver’s license (CDL). You’ll also need to perform the following tasks when you start a trucking company:

  • Get your CDL.
  • Get a truck and trailer.
  • Submit IFTA Form 290.
  • Apply for insurance.
  • Register with the federal Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Join the International Fuel Tax Alliance.
  • Get an IRP plate.
  • Let’s look at the considerations.

Get Your Commercial Driver's License

To drive a semi-truck, you’ll need a commercial driver's license. Each state has different requirements, but most consist of the following: 

  • Be of good health based on hearing and response times, but there are other reasons you might not qualify.
  • Pass background and driver safety checks.
  • Get your state CDL manual from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Some states use alternate names .
  • Take a commercial permit knowledge test.
  • Go to a third-party commercial driving school. The manual should list licensed schools.
  • Take the driver test.

Next, you’ll want to apply for insurance because many of the following steps require it.

Buy A Truck

  • Brands : Kenworth, Volvo, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Western Star
  • Features : Sleeper included for long haul trips
  • Market Price : Should be market price or slightly below to get the best value

He told us:

[su_quote] I try to stay between [the] $50 to $70 thousand range for used trucks that have between 450K miles to 650K miles. [/su_quote]

He also suggested bringing someone with you that can check the engine and transmission. They will be able to provide reasonable estimates for the cost of repairs and help you negotiate the price.

Types of Trucks

Trucks in the United States are rated by the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The GVWR is a rating that manufacturers use to specify the maximum weight that a vehicle can operate safely. This weight includes the truck, trailer, gas, occupants, and freight. There are eight basic levels including: 

  • Passenger vehicles (light duty) : Classes 1, 2a, and 2b have a GVWR of under 10,000 pounds. These also include popular trucks and SUVs like the Ford F150 and some box trucks.
  • Medium duty vehicles : These go in Classes 3-6, which are below the 26,000 pound GVWR. Common vehicles in this class include Ford F350 to F650, Silverado 3500 to 6500, and Ram 3500 to 5500. A box truck company will fall in this category as well as some smaller semi-trucks with sleepers.
  • Heavy duty trucks: Class 7 is 26,001 to 33,000 pounds, and Class 8 is over 33,000 pounds. These are the big boys, and they require a CDL.

The federal government requires heavy-duty trucks to have a commercial driver's license, but each state has its own policies. California requires any vehicle over 6,000 pounds and 3 axles to have a CDL.

Types of Trailers

There are a ton of different trailers you can use for trucking. It just depends on what you need to carry. Some of the most common are:

  • Dry Van Trailers: Standard trailers are 53 feet long and around 45,000 pounds maximum weight.
  • Standard Flatbed Trailers: These trailers are great for products that don’t need to be protected from the elements.
  • Refrigerated Trailers (Reefers): If you transport food, you’ll need temperature control with a max weight of 42,000–45,000 pounds. 
  • Drop-Deck, Step-Deck Trailers : These are similar to flatbeds but prevent height problems, and are up to 53 feet long.
  • Double Drop, Lowboy Trailers : Double Drops are higher at the front and the back and carry 40K–80K pounds.
  • Hotshot Trailers : This low-lying flatbed is 30–40 feet long, but only carries 16,500 pounds and is usable with Class 3 to 6 trucks.
  • Conestoga Trailers : If you need a flatbed with a sliding tarp cover, use a Conestoga trailer.
  • Curtainside Trailers : Need a dry-van with a solid front, top, and back, but tarp curtain sides to make it easier to load from the side? Curtain Trailers are the answer.

They don’t mention tankers in the video. You can transport hazardous waste or oil products, but those will require specialized licensing and knowledge. You are better off getting some miles on the road before you start hauling these products.

When first starting, you’ll probably only be able to choose one type of trailer. I’d probably go with a reefer or drop deck as they will offer you the most versatility. That sounds consistent with what Mikael told us:

  • Refrigeration and frozen food (best in summer and fall)
  • Flatbed for construction (springtime does best)
  • Power only: Amazon is the biggest customer I have just 'cause of their volume
  • Towing: I’ve delivered as far as Nevada[/su_quote]

Fill out Form 2290

You’ll need to pay your heavy use taxes to the IRS before you can start driving. You’ll use Form 2290 and either apply for an exemption or pay up to $504.17 (subject to increase). You won’t be able to get your authority or IRP License without proof.

Get your trucking insurance

You’ll need active insurance coverage including public liability insurance. The requirements vary based on state and federal laws, but you will need at least $750,000 of Bodily Injury (BI) and Property Damage (PD) liability insurance coverage. If you will be transporting hazardous materials, the requirement is $5 million.

The ATA has an agreement with Sentry as a preferred insurance provider. Most major insurers also have a commercial truck insurance product, or you can also find specialized truck insurance from companies like Owner Operator Direct .

Become a trucking authority

To run an interstate (operating across state lines) business in the U.S. transportation industry, you will need to get licensed as an operating authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ( FMCSA ). To apply, you’ll need to:

  • Get your Department of Transportation (DOT) number here .
  • Get the proper insurance .
  • Apply for the Operating Authorities you wish to qualify under. There are multiple types .
  • Pay $300 fee per Operating Authority.

When you perform these steps you will have a temporary operating authority for your self-owned trucking company. The DOT has to perform an audit before you have a permanent operating authority. These are not actually permanent, however, as they will take it away if you do not operate under the laws.

Join International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA)

You’ll want to join the International Fuel Tax Association. It was created under the International Fuel Tax Agreement to simplify the payment of fuel taxes in the continental United States, Alaska, and Canadian provinces.

Truckers are required to pay fuel tax based on the percentage of miles they drive in each state. To simplify the administrative costs, each jurisdiction handles its own member applications, tax returns, and audits. Read up on how it works on the IFTACH website .

You’ll need to apply at your local office and pay a fee which will provide you with two decals to prove your membership.

You’ll need to file a tax return every year for your gas tax. Fortunately, you just file with your state and they’ll distribute it accordingly. You’ll need to track your miles and time in each state to pay the appropriate taxes whether you bought gas in that state or not. You can use a log book or an electronic log (elog). I talked to a relative that is a truck driver and he warned:

[su_quote] Be careful with elogs. When GPS goes down, and it frequently does, they may not log the miles. In addition, when they get hacked you have to get a new one. 16,000 drivers recently got warnings to get a new log or stop driving because of a hack of a provider. If you use them, also keep a manual log. [/su_quote]

Get an IRP plate

You’ll need an International Registration Plan (IRP) before you start a trucking company. An IRP is a plate that allows you to get plates that work in all states. You’ll want to go to the appropriate licensing office in your state to get these. You can find each state in the FMCSA list of providers .

Some states also require additional permits to operate within them. Mikael told us: 

[su_quote] Oregon requires a permit if you operate within the state but are from out of state. [/su_quote]

Allow a DOT Trucking company audit

When you start a trucking company, the DOT will conduct an audit during the first year to verify that:

  • You are keeping proper records.
  • You have a drug and alcohol testing program.
  • All insurance is up to date.
  • Periodic inspections are performed and documented.
  • No major infractions incur.

You can learn more at FMCSA . If you do not pass this audit, your business will not get permanent authority to operate.

Getting customers for your new trucking business isn’t that hard these days. There is a huge shortage of drivers, and you just have to get your name out there.

Mikael had a ton to say about finding customers. He told us:

Create your brand

One of the best ways to attract new customers is by creating a memorable brand image through an effective branding campaign. 

Branding is the process through which a company’s mission, values, and image enters the public consciousness. 

Get a good logo

Successful branding begins with a good logo that represents the company effectively and in a simple, easily memorable manner.

Getting the logo right is an important step toward corporate success, and if you are not a natural artist or computer graphics expert, plenty of firms offer logo design for reasonable rates. It’s a worthy investment of resources toward a bright future for your new trucking business.

Advertise your brand on social media

Successful advertising happens in both traditional and social media. Mikael told us:

[su_quote] I advertise on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. [/su_quote]

He went on to explain that he does short videos to help people understand the industry better. He even hires new drivers through the videos. He had four interviews from a single TikTok video.

Determine your competitive advantage

Branding and advertising can all be for naught if your company’s competitive advantage is not clearly defined. A competitive advantage is a unique service, perk, or reward that differentiates your business from others. 

The trucking business is a very competitive industry with some large players that have thousands of trucks in their fleet and nearly half a million competitors. Some ways to differentiate your trucking company might be:

  • Subscription-based models : Charge customers monthly for a guaranteed number of miles or pounds. Mikael has several customers that have a consistent pickup day and time. He’s able to reduce the administrative time and cost for them because they just routinely send their order.
  • Service-based models : Guarantee on-time pickup and delivery (better follow through).
  • Pricing: Offer premium service or discount service. For instance, you might give someone a discount if they have a delivery that you can just add onto your current load.
  • Be more open : Mikael told us that different industries pay better at different times of the year. Share how you calculate pricing so people can create their own estimate and request a pickup.

Don’t neglect traditional marketing

Mikael reminded us that traditional marketing strategies like business cards and networking are really beneficial in the trucking industry. He told us that the trucking industry is in demand by most companies.

Always be prepared; you never know where you’ll find customers.

Mikael runs multiple businesses so he had a lot to say about how to manage a trucking business (or any business for that matter). Some of the advice he gave us included:

  • Get a business bank account with a credit union.
  • Make sure you have at least a personal credit score of 680. 
  • Be sure to have at least $10K down payment if you’re financing the business.
  • Always have money for incidentals. (His company had 2 flat tires in a week and 16 repairs in a month.)
  • Use Quickbooks and hire a bookkeeper. 

He told us:

He went on to explain how they try to grow. He explained:

[su_quote] I try to hit $10K per month per truck. I calculate earnings by the week, then try to hit  the median + 30%. Effectively, I’m trying to increase by 30% each week. [/su_quote]

Trucking companies have a lot of administrative work they have to do. If you’re a solo entrepreneur, you’ll be doing it yourself, or you can hire people to help you. A lot of truckers hire their wives to do the dispatch. This can be a good or bad thing. Make sure she understands what she’s doing.

The main administrative work is typically done by dispatchers. A dispatcher will normally make between $30,000 and $75,000 per year and have job responsibilities including:

  • Providing estimates to customers
  • Preparing dispatch documents
  • Planning and adjusting routes
  • Scheduling driver pickup and delivery times
  • Communicating with customers about delivery or pickup times, freight limitations, and special requests
  • Creating bills and invoices
  • Maintaining call records, delivery and pickup times, driver routes, and route changes
  • Updating drivers on transportation regulations and laws
  • Reviewing drivers’ logs and comparing them to quoted arrival times.
  • Logging shipping schedules 
  • Monitoring truck repairs
  • Scheduling maintenance
  • Managing complaints

  • Motive : This software is a combination of risk management, security, and customer relationship tools. When used with the video cam, it is also good for an educational tool.
  • DAT board : Use this to find a load that you can use to improve your returns by running a fuller truck and getting loads for the return home.

How to start a trucking business without driving

There are a few ways to start a trucking business without driving. Some of the trucking businesses that don’t require you to drive include:

  • Freight factoring company : Provide loans on invoices for a percentage of the load.
  • Freight brokerage : Develop relationships with shippers and truckers and play the middleman. You still need all the requirements of a trucking company, though.
  • Process Agent: A process agent is a company that has a person and office in every state. They are necessary under the Unified Carrier Registration. You can find a full list on the FMCSA.
  • Trucking Software Provider : If you think you can find ways to help truckers simplify reporting, financial projections, taxation methods, or other essential parts of their job, you might have a great opportunity because the industry is in constant flux.
  • Hire drivers with CDLs: You can start a trucking business without a CDL, but you’ll have to pay truckers to haul the loads for you. Mikael operates in this manner but still has his CDL just in case something happens.

11.4 The Business Plan

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Describe the different purposes of a business plan

Unlike the brief or lean formats introduced so far, the business plan is a formal document used for the long-range planning of a company’s operation. It typically includes background information, financial information, and a summary of the business. Investors nearly always request a formal business plan because it is an integral part of their evaluation of whether to invest in a company. Although nothing in business is permanent, a business plan typically has components that are more “set in stone” than a business model canvas , which is more commonly used as a first step in the planning process and throughout the early stages of a nascent business. A business plan is likely to describe the business and industry, market strategies, sales potential, and competitive analysis, as well as the company’s long-term goals and objectives. An in-depth formal business plan would follow at later stages after various iterations to business model canvases. The business plan usually projects financial data over a three-year period and is typically required by banks or other investors to secure funding. The business plan is a roadmap for the company to follow over multiple years.

Some entrepreneurs prefer to use the canvas process instead of the business plan, whereas others use a shorter version of the business plan, submitting it to investors after several iterations. There are also entrepreneurs who use the business plan earlier in the entrepreneurial process, either preceding or concurrently with a canvas. For instance, Chris Guillebeau has a one-page business plan template in his book The $100 Startup . 48 His version is basically an extension of a napkin sketch without the detail of a full business plan. As you progress, you can also consider a brief business plan (about two pages)—if you want to support a rapid business launch—and/or a standard business plan.

As with many aspects of entrepreneurship, there are no clear hard and fast rules to achieving entrepreneurial success. You may encounter different people who want different things (canvas, summary, full business plan), and you also have flexibility in following whatever tool works best for you. Like the canvas, the various versions of the business plan are tools that will aid you in your entrepreneurial endeavor.

Business Plan Overview

Most business plans have several distinct sections ( Figure 11.16 ). The business plan can range from a few pages to twenty-five pages or more, depending on the purpose and the intended audience. For our discussion, we’ll describe a brief business plan and a standard business plan. If you are able to successfully design a business model canvas, then you will have the structure for developing a clear business plan that you can submit for financial consideration.

Both types of business plans aim at providing a picture and roadmap to follow from conception to creation. If you opt for the brief business plan, you will focus primarily on articulating a big-picture overview of your business concept.

The full business plan is aimed at executing the vision concept, dealing with the proverbial devil in the details. Developing a full business plan will assist those of you who need a more detailed and structured roadmap, or those of you with little to no background in business. The business planning process includes the business model, a feasibility analysis, and a full business plan, which we will discuss later in this section. Next, we explore how a business plan can meet several different needs.

Purposes of a Business Plan

A business plan can serve many different purposes—some internal, others external. As we discussed previously, you can use a business plan as an internal early planning device, an extension of a napkin sketch, and as a follow-up to one of the canvas tools. A business plan can be an organizational roadmap , that is, an internal planning tool and working plan that you can apply to your business in order to reach your desired goals over the course of several years. The business plan should be written by the owners of the venture, since it forces a firsthand examination of the business operations and allows them to focus on areas that need improvement.

Refer to the business venture throughout the document. Generally speaking, a business plan should not be written in the first person.

A major external purpose for the business plan is as an investment tool that outlines financial projections, becoming a document designed to attract investors. In many instances, a business plan can complement a formal investor’s pitch. In this context, the business plan is a presentation plan, intended for an outside audience that may or may not be familiar with your industry, your business, and your competitors.

You can also use your business plan as a contingency plan by outlining some “what-if” scenarios and exploring how you might respond if these scenarios unfold. Pretty Young Professional launched in November 2010 as an online resource to guide an emerging generation of female leaders. The site focused on recent female college graduates and current students searching for professional roles and those in their first professional roles. It was founded by four friends who were coworkers at the global consultancy firm McKinsey. But after positions and equity were decided among them, fundamental differences of opinion about the direction of the business emerged between two factions, according to the cofounder and former CEO Kathryn Minshew . “I think, naively, we assumed that if we kicked the can down the road on some of those things, we’d be able to sort them out,” Minshew said. Minshew went on to found a different professional site, The Muse , and took much of the editorial team of Pretty Young Professional with her. 49 Whereas greater planning potentially could have prevented the early demise of Pretty Young Professional, a change in planning led to overnight success for Joshua Esnard and The Cut Buddy team. Esnard invented and patented the plastic hair template that he was selling online out of his Fort Lauderdale garage while working a full-time job at Broward College and running a side business. Esnard had hundreds of boxes of Cut Buddies sitting in his home when he changed his marketing plan to enlist companies specializing in making videos go viral. It worked so well that a promotional video for the product garnered 8 million views in hours. The Cut Buddy sold over 4,000 products in a few hours when Esnard only had hundreds remaining. Demand greatly exceeded his supply, so Esnard had to scramble to increase manufacturing and offered customers two-for-one deals to make up for delays. This led to selling 55,000 units, generating $700,000 in sales in 2017. 50 After appearing on Shark Tank and landing a deal with Daymond John that gave the “shark” a 20-percent equity stake in return for $300,000, The Cut Buddy has added new distribution channels to include retail sales along with online commerce. Changing one aspect of a business plan—the marketing plan—yielded success for The Cut Buddy.

If you opt for the brief business plan, you will focus primarily on articulating a big-picture overview of your business concept. This version is used to interest potential investors, employees, and other stakeholders, and will include a financial summary “box,” but it must have a disclaimer, and the founder/entrepreneur may need to have the people who receive it sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) . The full business plan is aimed at executing the vision concept, providing supporting details, and would be required by financial institutions and others as they formally become stakeholders in the venture. Both are aimed at providing a picture and roadmap to go from conception to creation.

Types of Business Plans

The brief business plan is similar to an extended executive summary from the full business plan. This concise document provides a broad overview of your entrepreneurial concept, your team members, how and why you will execute on your plans, and why you are the ones to do so. You can think of a brief business plan as a scene setter or—since we began this chapter with a film reference—as a trailer to the full movie. The brief business plan is the commercial equivalent to a trailer for Field of Dreams , whereas the full plan is the full-length movie equivalent.

Brief Business Plan or Executive Summary

As the name implies, the brief business plan or executive summary summarizes key elements of the entire business plan, such as the business concept, financial features, and current business position. The executive summary version of the business plan is your opportunity to broadly articulate the overall concept and vision of the company for yourself, for prospective investors, and for current and future employees.

A typical executive summary is generally no longer than a page, but because the brief business plan is essentially an extended executive summary, the executive summary section is vital. This is the “ask” to an investor. You should begin by clearly stating what you are asking for in the summary.

In the business concept phase, you’ll describe the business, its product, and its markets. Describe the customer segment it serves and why your company will hold a competitive advantage. This section may align roughly with the customer segments and value-proposition segments of a canvas.

Next, highlight the important financial features, including sales, profits, cash flows, and return on investment. Like the financial portion of a feasibility analysis, the financial analysis component of a business plan may typically include items like a twelve-month profit and loss projection, a three- or four-year profit and loss projection, a cash-flow projection, a projected balance sheet, and a breakeven calculation. You can explore a feasibility study and financial projections in more depth in the formal business plan. Here, you want to focus on the big picture of your numbers and what they mean.

The current business position section can furnish relevant information about you and your team members and the company at large. This is your opportunity to tell the story of how you formed the company, to describe its legal status (form of operation), and to list the principal players. In one part of the extended executive summary, you can cover your reasons for starting the business: Here is an opportunity to clearly define the needs you think you can meet and perhaps get into the pains and gains of customers. You also can provide a summary of the overall strategic direction in which you intend to take the company. Describe the company’s mission, vision, goals and objectives, overall business model, and value proposition.

Rice University’s Student Business Plan Competition, one of the largest and overall best-regarded graduate school business-plan competitions (see Telling Your Entrepreneurial Story and Pitching the Idea ), requires an executive summary of up to five pages to apply. 51 , 52 Its suggested sections are shown in Table 11.2 .

Create a brief business plan.

Fill out a canvas of your choosing for a well-known startup: Uber, Netflix, Dropbox, Etsy, Airbnb, Bird/Lime, Warby Parker, or any of the companies featured throughout this chapter or one of your choice. Then create a brief business plan for that business. See if you can find a version of the company’s actual executive summary, business plan, or canvas. Compare and contrast your vision with what the company has articulated.

  • These companies are well established but is there a component of what you charted that you would advise the company to change to ensure future viability?
  • Map out a contingency plan for a “what-if” scenario if one key aspect of the company or the environment it operates in were drastically is altered?

Full Business Plan

Even full business plans can vary in length, scale, and scope. Rice University sets a ten-page cap on business plans submitted for the full competition. The IndUS Entrepreneurs , one of the largest global networks of entrepreneurs, also holds business plan competitions for students through its Tie Young Entrepreneurs program. In contrast, business plans submitted for that competition can usually be up to twenty-five pages. These are just two examples. Some components may differ slightly; common elements are typically found in a formal business plan outline. The next section will provide sample components of a full business plan for a fictional business.

Executive Summary

The executive summary should provide an overview of your business with key points and issues. Because the summary is intended to summarize the entire document, it is most helpful to write this section last, even though it comes first in sequence. The writing in this section should be especially concise. Readers should be able to understand your needs and capabilities at first glance. The section should tell the reader what you want and your “ask” should be explicitly stated in the summary.

Describe your business, its product or service, and the intended customers. Explain what will be sold, who it will be sold to, and what competitive advantages the business has. Table 11.3 shows a sample executive summary for the fictional company La Vida Lola.

Venture Team

The two founding members of the management team have almost four decades of combined experience in the restaurant and hospitality industries. Their background includes experience in food and beverage, hospitality and tourism, accounting, finance, and business creation.

Capital Requirements

La Vida Lola is seeking startup capital of $50,000 to establish its food truck in the Atlanta area. An additional $20,000 will be raised through a donations-driven crowdfunding campaign. The venture can be up and running within six months to a year.

Business Description

This section describes the industry, your product, and the business and success factors. It should provide a current outlook as well as future trends and developments. You also should address your company’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives. Summarize your overall strategic direction, your reasons for starting the business, a description of your products and services, your business model, and your company’s value proposition. Consider including the Standard Industrial Classification/North American Industry Classification System (SIC/NAICS) code to specify the industry and insure correct identification. The industry extends beyond where the business is located and operates, and should include national and global dynamics. Table 11.4 shows a sample business description for La Vida Lola.

Business Description

La Vida Lola will operate in the mobile food services industry, which is identified by SIC code 5812 Eating Places and NAICS code 722330 Mobile Food Services, which consist of establishments primarily engaged in preparing and serving meals and snacks for immediate consumption from motorized vehicles or nonmotorized carts.

Ethnically inspired to serve a consumer base that craves more spiced Latin foods, La Vida Lola is an Atlanta-area food truck specializing in Latin cuisine, particularly Puerto Rican and Cuban dishes native to the roots of the founding chef and namesake, Lola González.

La Vida Lola aims to spread a passion for Latin cuisine within local communities through flavorful food freshly prepared in a region that has embraced international eats. Through its mobile food kitchen, La Vida Lola plans to roll into parks, festivals, office buildings, breweries, and sporting and community events throughout the greater Atlanta metropolitan region. Future growth possibilities lie in expanding the number of food trucks, integrating food delivery on demand, and adding a food stall at an area food market.

After working in noted restaurants for a decade, most recently under the famed chef José Andrés, chef Lola González returned to her hometown of Duluth, Georgia, to start her own venture. Although classically trained by top world chefs, it was González’s grandparents’ cooking of authentic Puerto Rican and Cuban dishes in their kitchen that influenced her profoundly.

The freshest ingredients from the local market, the island spices, and her attention to detail were the spark that ignited Lola’s passion for cooking. To that end, she brings flavors steeped in Latin American and Caribbean culture to a flavorful menu packed full of street foods, sandwiches, and authentic dishes. Through reasonably priced menu items, La Vida Lola offers food that appeals to a wide range of customers, from millennial foodies to Latin natives and other locals with Latin roots.

Industry Analysis and Market Strategies

Here you should define your market in terms of size, structure, growth prospects, trends, and sales potential. You’ll want to include your TAM and forecast the SAM . (Both these terms are discussed in Conducting a Feasibility Analysis .) This is a place to address market segmentation strategies by geography, customer attributes, or product orientation. Describe your positioning relative to your competitors’ in terms of pricing, distribution, promotion plan, and sales potential. Table 11.5 shows an example industry analysis and market strategy for La Vida Lola.

Industry Analysis and Market Strategy

According to ’ first annual report from the San Francisco-based Off The Grid, a company that facilitates food markets nationwide, the US food truck industry alone is projected to grow by nearly 20 percent from $800 million in 2017 to $985 million in 2019. Meanwhile, an report shows the street vendors’ industry with a 4.2 percent annual growth rate to reach $3.2 billion in 2018. Food truck and street food vendors are increasingly investing in specialty, authentic ethnic, and fusion food, according to the report.

Although the report projects demand to slow down over the next five years, it notes there are still opportunities for sustained growth in major metropolitan areas. The street vendors industry has been a particular bright spot within the larger food service sector.

The industry is in a growth phase of its life cycle. The low overhead cost to set up a new establishment has enabled many individuals, especially specialty chefs looking to start their own businesses, to own a food truck in lieu of opening an entire restaurant. Off the Grid’s annual report indicates the average typical initial investment ranges from $55,000 to $75,000 to open a mobile food truck.

The restaurant industry accounts for $800 billion in sales nationwide, according to data from the National Restaurant Association. Georgia restaurants brought in a total of $19.6 billion in 2017, according to figures from the Georgia Restaurant Association.

There are approximately 12,000 restaurants in the metro Atlanta region. The Atlanta region accounts for almost 60 percent of the Georgia restaurant industry. The SAM is estimated to be approximately $360 million.

The mobile food/street vendor industry can be segmented by types of customers, types of cuisine (American, desserts, Central and South American, Asian, mixed ethnicity, Greek Mediterranean, seafood), geographic location and types (mobile food stands, mobile refreshment stands, mobile snack stands, street vendors of food, mobile food concession stands).

Secondary competing industries include chain restaurants, single location full-service restaurants, food service contractors, caterers, fast food restaurants, and coffee and snack shops.

The top food truck competitors according to the , the daily newspaper in La Vida Lola’s market, are Bento Bus, Mix’d Up Burgers, Mac the Cheese, The Fry Guy, and The Blaxican. Bento Bus positions itself as a Japanese-inspired food truck using organic ingredients and dispensing in eco-friendly ware. The Blaxican positions itself as serving what it dubs “Mexican soul food,” a fusion mashup of Mexican food with Southern comfort food. After years of operating a food truck, The Blaxican also recently opened its first brick-and-mortar restaurant. The Fry Guy specializes in Belgian-style street fries with a variety of homemade dipping sauces. These three food trucks would be the primary competition to La Vida Lola, since they are in the “ethnic food” space, while the other two offer traditional American food. All five have established brand identities and loyal followers/customers since they are among the industry leaders as established by “best of” lists from area publications like the . Most dishes from competitors are in the $10–$13 price range for entrees. La Vida Lola dishes will range from $6 to $13.

One key finding from Off the Grid’s report is that mobile food has “proven to be a powerful vehicle for catalyzing diverse entrepreneurship” as 30 percent of mobile food businesses are immigrant owned, 30 percent are women owned, and 8 percent are LGBTQ owned. In many instances, the owner-operator plays a vital role to the brand identity of the business as is the case with La Vida Lola.

Atlanta has also tapped into the nationwide trend of food hall-style dining. These food halls are increasingly popular in urban centers like Atlanta. On one hand, these community-driven areas where food vendors and retailers sell products side by side are secondary competitors to food trucks. But they also offer growth opportunities for future expansion as brands solidify customer support in the region. The most popular food halls in Atlanta are Ponce City Market in Midtown, Krog Street Market along the BeltLine trail in the Inman Park area, and Sweet Auburn Municipal Market downtown Atlanta. In addition to these trends, Atlanta has long been supportive of international cuisine as Buford Highway (nicknamed “BuHi”) has a reputation for being an eclectic food corridor with an abundance of renowned Asian and Hispanic restaurants in particular.

The Atlanta region is home to a thriving Hispanic and Latinx population, with nearly half of the region’s foreign-born population hailing from Latin America. There are over half a million Hispanic and Latin residents living in metro Atlanta, with a 150 percent population increase predicted through 2040. The median age of metro Atlanta Latinos is twenty-six. La Vida Lola will offer authentic cuisine that will appeal to this primary customer segment.

La Vida Lola must contend with regulations from towns concerning operations of mobile food ventures and health regulations, but the Atlanta region is generally supportive of such operations. There are many parks and festivals that include food truck vendors on a weekly basis.

Competitive Analysis

The competitive analysis is a statement of the business strategy as it relates to the competition. You want to be able to identify who are your major competitors and assess what are their market shares, markets served, strategies employed, and expected response to entry? You likely want to conduct a classic SWOT analysis (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats) and complete a competitive-strength grid or competitive matrix. Outline your company’s competitive strengths relative to those of the competition in regard to product, distribution, pricing, promotion, and advertising. What are your company’s competitive advantages and their likely impacts on its success? The key is to construct it properly for the relevant features/benefits (by weight, according to customers) and how the startup compares to incumbents. The competitive matrix should show clearly how and why the startup has a clear (if not currently measurable) competitive advantage. Some common features in the example include price, benefits, quality, type of features, locations, and distribution/sales. Sample templates are shown in Figure 11.17 and Figure 11.18 . A competitive analysis helps you create a marketing strategy that will identify assets or skills that your competitors are lacking so you can plan to fill those gaps, giving you a distinct competitive advantage. When creating a competitor analysis, it is important to focus on the key features and elements that matter to customers, rather than focusing too heavily on the entrepreneur’s idea and desires.

Operations and Management Plan

In this section, outline how you will manage your company. Describe its organizational structure. Here you can address the form of ownership and, if warranted, include an organizational chart/structure. Highlight the backgrounds, experiences, qualifications, areas of expertise, and roles of members of the management team. This is also the place to mention any other stakeholders, such as a board of directors or advisory board(s), and their relevant relationship to the founder, experience and value to help make the venture successful, and professional service firms providing management support, such as accounting services and legal counsel.

Table 11.6 shows a sample operations and management plan for La Vida Lola.

Key Management Personnel

The key management personnel consist of Lola González and Cameron Hamilton, who are longtime acquaintances since college. The management team will be responsible for funding the venture as well as securing loans to start the venture. The following is a summary of the key personnel backgrounds.

Chef Lola González has worked directly in the food service industry for fifteen years. While food has been a lifelong passion learned in her grandparents’ kitchen, chef González has trained under some of the top chefs in the world, most recently having worked under the James Beard Award-winning chef José Andrés. A native of Duluth, Georgia, chef González also has an undergraduate degree in food and beverage management. Her value to the firm is serving as “the face” and company namesake, preparing the meals, creating cuisine concepts, and running the day-to-day operations of La Vida Lola.

Cameron Hamilton has worked in the hospitality industry for over twenty years and is experienced in accounting and finance. He has a master of business administration degree and an undergraduate degree in hospitality and tourism management. He has opened and managed several successful business ventures in the hospitality industry. His value to the firm is in business operations, accounting, and finance.

Advisory Board

During the first year of operation, the company intends to keep a lean operation and does not plan to implement an advisory board. At the end of the first year of operation, the management team will conduct a thorough review and discuss the need for an advisory board.

Supporting Professionals

Stephen Ngo, Certified Professional Accountant (CPA), of Valdosta, Georgia, will provide accounting consulting services. Joanna Johnson, an attorney and friend of chef González, will provide recommendations regarding legal services and business formation.

Marketing Plan

Here you should outline and describe an effective overall marketing strategy for your venture, providing details regarding pricing, promotion, advertising, distribution, media usage, public relations, and a digital presence. Fully describe your sales management plan and the composition of your sales force, along with a comprehensive and detailed budget for the marketing plan. Table 11.7 shows a sample marketing plan for La Vida Lola.

La Vida Lola will adopt a concentrated marketing strategy. The company’s promotion mix will include a mix of advertising, sales promotion, public relations, and personal selling. Given the target millennial foodie audience, the majority of the promotion mix will be centered around social media platforms. Various social media content will be created in both Spanish and English. The company will also launch a crowdfunding campaign on two crowdfunding platforms for the dual purpose of promotion/publicity and fundraising.

Advertising and Sales Promotion

As with any crowdfunding social media marketing plan, the first place to begin is with the owners’ friends and family. Utilizing primarily Facebook/Instagram and Twitter, La Vida Lola will announce the crowdfunding initiative to their personal networks and prevail upon these friends and family to share the information. Meanwhile, La Vida Lola needs to focus on building a community of backers and cultivating the emotional draw of becoming part of the La Vida Lola family.

To build a crowdfunding community via social media, La Vida Lola will routinely share its location, daily if possible, on both Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Inviting and encouraging people to visit and sample their food can rouse interest in the cause. As the campaign is nearing its goal, it would be beneficial to offer a free food item to backers of a specific level, say $50, on one specific day. Sharing this via social media in the day or two preceding the giveaway and on the day of can encourage more backers to commit.

Weekly updates of the campaign and the project as a whole are a must. Facebook and Twitter updates of the project coupled with educational information sharing helps backers feel part of the La Vida Lola community.

Finally, at every location where La Vida Lola is serving its food, signage will notify the public of their social media presence and the current crowdfunding campaign. Each meal will be accompanied by an invitation from the server for the patron to visit the crowdfunding site and consider donating. Business cards listing the social media and crowdfunding information will be available in the most visible location, likely the counter.

Before moving forward with launching a crowdfunding campaign, La Vida Lola will create its website. The website is a great place to establish and share the La Vida Lola brand, vision, videos, menus, staff, and events. It is also a great source of information for potential backers who are unsure about donating to the crowdfunding campaigns. The website will include these elements:

. Address the following questions: Who are you? What are the guiding principles of La Vida Lola? How did the business get started? How long has La Vida Lola been in business? Include pictures of chef González. List of current offerings with prices. Will include promotional events and locations where customers can find the truck for different events. Steps will be taken to increase social media followers prior to launching the crowdfunding campaign. Unless a large social media following is already established, a business should aggressively push social media campaigns a minimum of three months prior to the crowdfunding campaign launch. Increasing social media following prior to the campaign kickoff will also allow potential donors to learn more about La Vida Lola and foster relationship building before attempting to raise funds.

Facebook Content and Advertising

The key piece of content will be the campaign pitch video, reshared as a native Facebook upload. A link to the crowdfunding campaigns can be included in the caption. Sharing the same high-quality video published on the campaign page will entice fans to visit Kickstarter to learn more about the project and rewards available to backers.

Crowdfunding Campaigns

Foodstart was created just for restaurants, breweries, cafés, food trucks, and other food businesses, and allows owners to raise money in small increments. It is similar to Indiegogo in that it offers both flexible and fixed funding models and charges a percentage for successful campaigns, which it claims to be the lowest of any crowdfunding platform. It uses a reward-based system rather than equity, where backers are offered rewards or perks resulting in “low-cost capital and a network of people who now have an incentive to see you succeed.”

Foodstart will host La Vida Lola’s crowdfunding campaigns for the following reasons: (1) It caters to their niche market; (2) it has less competition from other projects which means that La Vida Lola will stand out more and not get lost in the shuffle; and (3) it has/is making a name/brand for itself which means that more potential backers are aware of it.

La Vida Lola will run a simultaneous crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, which has broader mass appeal.

Publicity

Social media can be a valuable marketing tool to draw people to the Foodstarter and Indiegogo crowdfunding pages. It provides a means to engage followers and keep funders/backers updated on current fundraising milestones. The first order of business is to increase La Vida Lola’s social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Establishing and using a common hashtag such as #FundLola across all platforms will promote familiarity and searchability, especially within Instagram and Twitter. Hashtags are slowly becoming a presence on Facebook. The hashtag will be used in all print collateral.

La Vida Lola will need to identify social influencers—others on social media who can assist with recruiting followers and sharing information. Existing followers, family, friends, local food providers, and noncompetitive surrounding establishments should be called upon to assist with sharing La Vida Lola’s brand, mission, and so on. Cross-promotion will further extend La Vida Lola’s social reach and engagement. Influencers can be called upon to cross promote upcoming events and specials.

The crowdfunding strategy will utilize a progressive reward-based model and establish a reward schedule such as the following:

In addition to the publicity generated through social media channels and the crowdfunding campaign, La Vida Lola will reach out to area online and print publications (both English- and Spanish-language outlets) for feature articles. Articles are usually teased and/or shared via social media. Reaching out to local broadcast stations (radio and television) may provide opportunities as well. La Vida Lola will recruit a social media intern to assist with developing and implementing a social media content plan. Engaging with the audience and responding to all comments and feedback is important for the success of the campaign.

Some user personas from segmentation to target in the campaign:

Financial Plan

A financial plan seeks to forecast revenue and expenses; project a financial narrative; and estimate project costs, valuations, and cash flow projections. This section should present an accurate, realistic, and achievable financial plan for your venture (see Entrepreneurial Finance and Accounting for detailed discussions about conducting these projections). Include sales forecasts and income projections, pro forma financial statements ( Building the Entrepreneurial Dream Team , a breakeven analysis, and a capital budget. Identify your possible sources of financing (discussed in Conducting a Feasibility Analysis ). Figure 11.19 shows a template of cash-flow needs for La Vida Lola.

Entrepreneur In Action

Hugh Jackman ( Figure 11.20 ) may best be known for portraying a comic-book superhero who used his mutant abilities to protect the world from villains. But the Wolverine actor is also working to make the planet a better place for real, not through adamantium claws but through social entrepreneurship.

A love of java jolted Jackman into action in 2009, when he traveled to Ethiopia with a Christian humanitarian group to shoot a documentary about the impact of fair-trade certification on coffee growers there. He decided to launch a business and follow in the footsteps of the late Paul Newman, another famous actor turned philanthropist via food ventures.

Jackman launched Laughing Man Coffee two years later; he sold the line to Keurig in 2015. One Laughing Man Coffee café in New York continues to operate independently, investing its proceeds into charitable programs that support better housing, health, and educational initiatives within fair-trade farming communities. 55 Although the New York location is the only café, the coffee brand is still distributed, with Keurig donating an undisclosed portion of Laughing Man proceeds to those causes (whereas Jackman donates all his profits). The company initially donated its profits to World Vision, the Christian humanitarian group Jackman accompanied in 2009. In 2017, it created the Laughing Man Foundation to be more active with its money management and distribution.

Textbooks for change.

Founded in 2014, Textbooks for Change uses a cross-compensation model, in which one customer segment pays for a product or service, and the profit from that revenue is used to provide the same product or service to another, underserved segment. Textbooks for Change partners with student organizations to collect used college textbooks, some of which are re-sold while others are donated to students in need at underserved universities across the globe. The organization has reused or recycled 250,000 textbooks, providing 220,000 students with access through seven campus partners in East Africa. This B-corp social enterprise tackles a problem and offers a solution that is directly relevant to college students like yourself. Have you observed a problem on your college campus or other campuses that is not being served properly? Could it result in a social enterprise?

A franchisee of East Coast Wings, a chain with dozens of restaurants in the United States, has decided to part ways with the chain. The new store will feature the same basic sports-bar-and-restaurant concept and serve the same basic foods: chicken wings, burgers, sandwiches, and the like. The new restaurant can’t rely on the same distributors and suppliers. A new business plan is needed.

Your executive summary should include a summary of the problem you are solving, a description of your product or service, an overview of your target market, a brief description of your team, a summary of your financials, and your funding requirements (if you are raising money).

Products & services

The products & services chapter of your business plan is where the real meat of your plan lives. It includes information about the problem that you're solving, your solution, and any traction that proves that it truly meets the need you identified.

This is your chance to explain why you're in business and that people care about what you offer. It needs to go beyond a simple product or service description and get to the heart of why your business works and benefits your customers.

Market analysis

Conducting a market analysis ensures that you fully understand the market that you're entering and who you'll be selling to. This section is where you will showcase all of the information about your potential customers. You'll cover your target market as well as information about the growth of your market and your industry. Focus on outlining why the market you're entering is viable and creating a realistic persona for your ideal customer base.

Competition

Part of defining your opportunity is determining what your competitive advantage may be. To do this effectively you need to get to know your competitors just as well as your target customers. Every business will have competition, if you don't then you're either in a very young industry or there's a good reason no one is pursuing this specific venture.

To succeed, you want to be sure you know who your competitors are, how they operate, necessary financial benchmarks, and how you're business will be positioned. Start by identifying who your competitors are or will be during your market research. Then leverage competitive analysis tools like the competitive matrix and positioning map to solidify where your business stands in relation to the competition.

Marketing & sales

The marketing and sales plan section of your business plan details how you plan to reach your target market segments. You'll address how you plan on selling to those target markets, what your pricing plan is, and what types of activities and partnerships you need to make your business a success.

The operations section covers the day-to-day workflows for your business to deliver your product or service. What's included here fully depends on the type of business. Typically you can expect to add details on your business location, sourcing and fulfillment, use of technology, and any partnerships or agreements that are in place.

Milestones & metrics

The milestones section is where you lay out strategic milestones to reach your business goals.

A good milestone clearly lays out the parameters of the task at hand and sets expectations for its execution. You'll want to include a description of the task, a proposed due date, who is responsible, and eventually a budget that's attached. You don't need extensive project planning in this section, just key milestones that you want to hit and when you plan to hit them.

You should also discuss key metrics, which are the numbers you will track to determine your success. Some common data points worth tracking include conversion rates, customer acquisition costs, profit, etc.

Company & team

Use this section to describe your current team and who you need to hire. If you intend to pursue funding, you'll need to highlight the relevant experience of your team members. Basically, this is where you prove that this is the right team to successfully start and grow the business. You will also need to provide a quick overview of your legal structure and history if you're already up and running.

Financial projections

Your financial plan should include a sales and revenue forecast, profit and loss statement, cash flow statement, and a balance sheet. You may not have established financials of any kind at this stage. Not to worry, rather than getting all of the details ironed out, focus on making projections and strategic forecasts for your business. You can always update your financial statements as you begin operations and start bringing in actual accounting data.

Now, if you intend to pitch to investors or submit a loan application, you'll also need a "use of funds" report in this section. This outlines how you intend to leverage any funding for your business and how much you're looking to acquire. Like the rest of your financials, this can always be updated later on.

The appendix isn't a required element of your business plan. However, it is a useful place to add any charts, tables, definitions, legal notes, or other critical information that supports your plan. These are often lengthier or out-of-place information that simply didn't work naturally into the structure of your plan. You'll notice that in these business plan examples, the appendix mainly includes extended financial statements.

While all business plans cover similar categories, the style and function fully depend on how you intend to use your plan. To get the most out of your plan, it's best to find a format that suits your needs. Here are a few common business plan types worth considering.

Traditional business plan

One-page business plan

The true middle ground between the business model canvas and a traditional business plan is the one-page business plan . This format is a simplified version of the traditional plan that focuses on the core aspects of your business.

By starting with a one-page plan , you give yourself a minimal document to build from. You'll typically stick with bullet points and single sentences making it much easier to elaborate or expand sections into a longer-form business plan.

If you’re looking for a new and creative way to introduce yourself to students this year, we’ve got you covered! We gathered lots of terrific ideas, including some from teachers on the WeAreTeachers HELPLINE group on Facebook . They range from quick and easy options to some that will take some planning, but they’re all great ways to start the new year off on the right note.

1. Do a Teacher Feature on school social media

Lots of schools use their social media accounts to introduce teachers, like this example from @tstlongview . Propose the idea at your school, suggesting they do a teacher a day in the weeks leading up to back-to-school time.

2. Have last year’s students introduce you

This fun learning activity not only allows your current students to introduce you to next year’s class, it gives you a chance to get feedback about how this year has gone! See how this teacher runs the lesson with her students .

3. Send postcards to introduce yourself

Try postcards instead. “I took a picture of me playing fetch with my trusty golden retriever and sent it to each of my new students over the summer,” James C. shares. “On the back, I wrote a short note introducing myself and telling them how excited I was to have them in my class.” See how The Techie Teacher uses this idea here.

5. Introduce yourself with a quiz

First-day quizzes are a really popular way to introduce yourself to students. Kahoot even has an easy-to-customize template just for getting to know your teacher! Lisa T. does a slideshow about herself on the first day and then follows up on the second day with a quiz to see how much they remember.

6. Share your talents

Students expect the usual bio intro—I’m Ms. Smith, I’ve been teaching for 10 year, etc. But why not open with a bit of pizzazz by sharing one of your unique talents with students? Play a song on your trumpet, pass out cookies you made, display a quilt you made. Opening up with something personal will encourage your students to do the same. 

7. Plan a meet-the-teacher escape room

8. Play 20 Questions

After a brief introduction, open the floor to students’ questions about yourself and the coming year. This is a great way to reveal students’ wishes and hopes for the year as well as any concerns that are lurking beneath the surface. Be sure to have a “pass” option if students ask any questions that are too personal for you so you can deflect with good humor.

9. Use a student-created brochure

Then she gives a quiz to see if kids really took the time to read it! “At the end of the year, I have my students make a brochure for next year’s students. 10. Decorate a Bitmoji virtual classroom

Whether you’re teaching in person or online, Bitmoji classrooms are a fantastic way to show off your personality. This one from The Social Studies World of Ms. J has clickable images to take students to different important links.  Learn how to create your own here.

11. Read, run, and write

Get your students working collaboratively and focusing on their writing skills right away with this activity from the Busy Teacher . Write a list of facts about yourself—your background, family, hobbies, etc.—and post several copies of the list in the front of the room.

Divide your class into small teams and give each team a sheet of paper. One student in each group will stay at their desk while the others take turns running up to the board, reading and memorizing as much as they can before running back to the student at the desk who will listen and write down what they’re told. The first group to correctly write down the full list wins.

12. Build a word cloud

Word clouds are fun to make, and you can use this as an activity for all your students on the first day if you like. 13. Set up a question-and-answer match

Fourth grade teacher Lori Silviera shares this fun activity: “I make Q and A’s on index cards about me,” she says, “and then the students try to find a classmate who has the answer or question that matches the card they get. After they partner, the person with the question reads it and then the partner that has the answer reads it to the rest of the class. For example: How many pets do I have? (One cat named Lenny).” 

14. Pop an emoji bubble

We love this clever little game that works with Google Slides and is perfect for virtual or traditional classrooms. Students pick an emoji and “pop” the bubble, and you answer the question to tell them a bit about yourself. Kids can play too! Get the game from SSSTeaching on Teachers Pay Teachers .

15. Create a Fakebook profile

It’s not a great idea to show students your real social media pages. Instead, create a “Fakebook” profile, like teacher Marissa Q. does. Use the free online tool , or mock up one on paper, sharing interesting facts, photos, and other info about you that you’re comfortable with kids knowing.

16. Model a survey

Try this fun and educational activity from the Art of Education. Student questionnaires/surveys are a great way to get to know your students, and for students to have an opportunity to share things with you at the start of the school year. Ask things like, “Do you have a nickname or middle name that you go by instead of what is on the roster?” “What is your preferred pronoun?” “How do you like to receive feedback?” etc. We like this list of questions from the Inspiration Board. 

17. Let students research your life

Introduce yourself to your students with a lesson on gathering info from trustworthy primary sources . “I give students a stack of primary documents from my life (letters, report cards, class pictures, etc.) with all the sensitive information blacked out,” eighth grade teacher Phil L. says. “I ask the students to create a timeline from that information, hypothesize about what happened in the gaps, and draw conclusions about the kind of person they think I am.”

18. Try a game of This and That

Your new students will love this hands-on “get to know you” game from Amateur Craft Hour . The game begins with the first person securing a ball of yarn to their wrist. Then, they choose a stick with a word written on each side—for example, fame and money. They choose which one they would prefer. Then, they ask those who would make the same choice to raise their hand and toss the yarn to one of them. Play continues until the yarn has woven quite a web illustrating that we are all connected in some way.

19. Hold a scavenger hunt

Jan R. expands on the research activity by turning her students into detectives. She puts all the documents in envelopes marked TOP SECRET and stashes them around her room. She even gives them magnifying glasses to read the fine print! Use the free printables from Moms & Munchkins to make this even more fun.

20. Introduce yourself in a movie

It’s a bit more work, but teachers point out that you can use these to introduce yourself again and again. Plus, a movie works in both regular and virtual classrooms. Many teachers already have access to iMovie on their school computers. Learn how to use it here.

21. Introduce yourself on Flip

Flip (formerly Flipgrid) is the best interactive tool you’re not using yet. It allows teachers and kids to record and safely post short videos … and it’s completely free! Record a Flip video to introduce yourself to students, then have them do the same. Whether you’re teaching in person or online, this is such a fun way for everyone to get to know each other.

22. Let them do the math

Sneak a little math review into your teacher introduction with this clever idea! Come up with a series of facts about you that can be represented in numbers, then turn those into math problems. 23. Design a T-shirt

Wear your personality on your sleeve! Draw the outline of a shirt and decorate it with information about yourself. Have your students do the same and then use them to adorn your room, like Counseling Corner does. (Feeling ambitious? Decorate and wear a real T-shirt instead!)

25. Put together a name tent

27. Let your star shine

28. Dress the part

“I know my students think of me as a bit of a geek (hey, what can I say, I’m a math teacher!) so I totally geek out for the first day of school,” admits Greg S. “I wear a pi T-shirt and thick glasses and really play up the geeky math teacher thing.” Want to go all out? 29. Play Red Light, Green Light, getting-to-know-you style

Here’s a fun twist on the classic “Two Truths and a Lie” (another teacher-introduction favorite). Line kids up on one end of the room or playground. Stand on the other side, and make a statement about yourself. If students think the statement is true, they take one step forward. If they’re wrong, they go back to the start! 30. Write an autobiographical poem

This idea comes from Brianna H., who says, “I like to do an autobiographical poem. I do a model about myself to use as a guide for them. Students write their own using the template and then write it on construction paper and cut out images to create a collage around it.” See this project in action from Melulater.

31. Show them you’re one part of the puzzle

Use this cute idea to introduce yourself and create a terrific back-to-school bulletin board all at once! Personalize your puzzle piece with pictures or facts about yourself. Have kids do the same, and put all the pieces together to make a terrific mural for your classroom. Learn more from Supply Me .

32. Assemble a picture collage

Use pictures to make a collage that tells kids about you with pictures instead of words. “We do a Get to Know Me in Pictures,” says Paige T. “I made one for myself and I introduce myself to the whole class using mine.” If you really want to get creative, make your collage in the shape of your silhouette. 33. Map out a timeline of your life

Draw a timeline on the whiteboard before you introduce yourself, suggests Jan R. As you share facts about yourself from different points in your life, have kids come up and add those events to the right place on the timeline. Make it even more fun by adding photos from your life, like this one from Surfin’ Through Second .

34. Craft a get-to-know-you cloudburst

35. Write a Mystery Box essay

Dawn M. explains, “I put 3 items that represent me in a bag and use it to teach the 5-paragraph essay format. Each item is one paragraph of my essay. Then I share my essay with the kids and pull each item out while reading that item’s paragraph.” She follows up by having kids write their own introductory essays using the same format. With Israel declaring war on the Gaza Strip after an unprecedented attack by the armed Palestinian group Hamas on Saturday, the world’s eyes are again sharply focused on what might come next.

Hamas fighters have killed more than 800 Israelis in assaults on multiple towns in southern Israel. In response, Israel has launched a bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 500 Palestinians. It has mobilised troops along the Gaza border, apparently in preparation for a ground attack. And on Monday, it announced a “total blockade” of the Gaza Strip, stopping the supply of food, fuel and other essential commodities to the already besieged enclave in an act that under international law amounts to a war crime.

But what unfolds in the coming days and weeks has its seed in history.

For decades, Western media outlets, academics, military experts and world leaders have described the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as intractable, complicated and deadlocked.

Here’s a simple guide to break down one of the world’s longest-running conflicts:

What was the Balfour Declaration?

  • More than 100 years ago, on November 2, 1917, Britain’s then-foreign secretary, Arthur Balfour, wrote a letter addressed to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a figurehead of the British Jewish community.
  • The letter was short – just 67 words – but its contents had a seismic effect on Palestine that is still felt to this day.
  • It committed the British government to “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and to facilitating “the achievement of this object”. The letter is known as the Balfour Declaration .
  • In essence, a European power promised the Zionist movement a country where Palestinian Arab natives made up more than 90 percent of the population.
  • A British Mandate was created in 1923 and lasted until 1948. During that period, the British facilitated mass Jewish immigration – many of the new residents were fleeing Nazism in Europe – and they also faced protests and strikes. Palestinians were alarmed by their country’s changing demographics and British confiscation of their lands to be handed over to Jewish settlers.

What happened during the 1930s?

  • Escalating tensions eventually led to the Arab Revolt, which lasted from 1936 to 1939.
  • In April 1936, the newly formed Arab National Committee called on Palestinians to launch a general strike, withhold tax payments and boycott Jewish products to protest British colonialism and growing Jewish immigration.
  • The six-month strike was brutally repressed by the British, who launched a mass arrest campaign and carried out punitive home demolitions , a practice that Israel continues to implement against Palestinians today.
  • The second phase of the revolt began in late 1937 and was led by the Palestinian peasant   resistance movement, which targeted British forces and colonialism.
  • By the second half of 1939, Britain had massed 30,000 troops in Palestine. Villages were bombed by air, curfews imposed, homes demolished, and administrative detentions and summary killings were widespread.
  • In tandem, the British collaborated with the Jewish settler community and formed armed groups and a British-led “counterinsurgency force” of Jewish fighters named the Special Night Squads.
  • Within the Yishuv, the pre-state settler community, arms were secretly imported and weapons factories established to expand the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary that later became the core of the Israeli army.
  • In those three years of revolt, 5,000 Palestinians were killed, 15,000 to 20,000 were wounded and 5,600 were imprisoned.

What was the UN partition plan?

  • By 1947, the Jewish population had ballooned to 33 percent of Palestine, but they owned only 6 percent of the land.
  • The United Nations adopted Resolution 181, which called for the partition of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states.
  • The Palestinians rejected the plan because it allotted about 55 percent of Palestine to the Jewish state, including most of the fertile coastal region.
  • At the time, the Palestinians owned 94 percent of historic Palestine and comprised 67 percent of its population.

The 1948 Nakba, or the ethnic cleansing of Palestine

  • Even before the British Mandate expired on May 14, 1948, Zionist paramilitaries were already embarking on a military operation to destroy Palestinian towns and villages to expand the borders of the Zionist state that was to be born.
  • In April 1948, more than 100 Palestinian men, women and children were killed in the village of Deir Yassin on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
  • That set the tone for the rest of the operation, and from 1947 to 1949, more than 500 Palestinian villages, towns and cities were destroyed in what Palestinians refer to as the Nakba , or “catastrophe” in Arabic.
  • An estimated 15,000 Palestinians were killed, including in dozens of massacres.
  • The Zionist movement captured 78 percent of historic Palestine. The remaining 22 percent was divided into what are now the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip.
  • An estimated 750,000 Palestinians were forced out of their homes.
  • Today their descendants live as six million refugees in 58 squalid camps throughout Palestine and in the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt.
  • On May 15, 1948, Israel announced its establishment.
  • The following day, the first Arab-Israeli war began and fighting ended in January 1949 after an armistice between Israel and Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
  • In December 1948, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 194, which calls for the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

The years after the Nakba

  • At least 150,000 Palestinians remained in the newly created state of Israel and lived under a tightly controlled military occupation for almost 20 years before they were eventually granted Israeli citizenship.
  • Egypt took over the Gaza Strip, and in 1950, Jordan began its administrative rule over the West Bank.
  • In 1964, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) was formed, and a year later, the Fatah political party was established.

The Naksa, or the Six-Day War and the settlements

  • On June 5, 1967, Israel occupied the rest of historic Palestine, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Syrian Golan Heights and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula during the Six-Day War against a coalition of Arab armies.
  • For some Palestinians, this led to a second forced displacement, or Naksa, which means “setback” in Arabic.
  • In December 1967, the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine was formed. Over the next decade, a series of attacks and plane hijackings by leftist groups drew the world’s attention to the plight of the Palestinians.
  • Settlement construction began in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. A two-tier system was created with Jewish settlers afforded all the rights and privileges of being Israeli citizens whereas Palestinians had to live under a military occupation that discriminated against them and barred any form of political or civic expression.

The first Intifada 1987-1993

  • The first Palestinian Intifada erupted in the Gaza Strip in December 1987 after four Palestinians were killed when an Israeli truck collided with two vans carrying Palestinian workers.
  • Protests spread rapidly to the West Bank with young Palestinians throwing stones at Israeli army tanks and soldiers.
  • It also led to the establishment of the Hamas movement, an off-shoot of the Muslim Brotherhood that engaged in armed resistance against the Israeli occupation.
  • The Israeli army’s heavy-handed response was encapsulated by the “Break their Bones” policy advocated by then-Defence Minister Yitzhak Rabin. It included summary killings, closures of universities, deportations of activists and destruction of homes.
  • The Intifada was primarily carried out by young people and was directed by the Unified National Leadership of the Uprising, a coalition of Palestinian political factions committed to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing Palestinian independence.
  • In 1988, the Arab League recognised the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinian people.
  • The Intifada was characterised by popular mobilisations, mass protests, civil disobedience, well-organised strikes and communal cooperatives.
  • According to the Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem, 1,070 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during the Intifada, including 237 children. More than 175,000 Palestinians were arrested.
  • The Intifada also prompted the international community to search for a solution to the conflict.

The Oslo years and the Palestinian Authority

  • The Intifada ended with the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 and the formation of the Palestinian Authority (PA), an interim government that was granted limited self-rule in pockets of the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
  • The PLO recognised Israel on the basis of a two-state solution and effectively signed agreements that gave Israel control of 60 percent of the West Bank, and much of the territory’s land and water resources.
  • The PA was supposed to make way for the first elected Palestinian government running an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with its capital in East Jerusalem, but that has never happened.
  • Critics of the PA view it as a corrupt subcontractor to the Israeli occupation that collaborates closely with the Israeli military in clamping down on dissent and political activism against Israel.
  • In 1995, Israel built an electronic fence and concrete wall around the Gaza Strip, snapping interactions between the split Palestinian territories.

The second Intifada

  • The second Intifada began on September 28, 2000, when Likud opposition leader Ariel Sharon made a provocative visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound with thousands of security forces deployed in and around the Old City of Jerusalem.
  • Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces killed five Palestinians and injured 200 over two days.
  • The incident sparked a widespread armed uprising. During the Intifada, Israel caused unprecedented damage to the Palestinian economy and infrastructure.
  • Israel reoccupied areas governed by the Palestinian Authority and began construction of a separation wall that along with rampant settlement construction, destroyed Palestinian livelihoods and communities.
  • Settlements are illegal under international law, but over the years, hundreds of thousands of Jewish settlers have moved to colonies built on stolen Palestinian land. The space for Palestinians is shrinking as settler-only roads and infrastructure slice up the occupied West Bank, forcing Palestinian cities and towns into bantustans, the isolated enclaves for Black South Africans that the country’s former apartheid regime created.
  • At the time the Oslo Accords were signed, just over 110,000 Jewish settlers lived in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Today, the figure is more than 700,000 living on more than 100,000 hectares (390sq miles) of land expropriated from the Palestinians.

The Palestinian division and the Gaza blockade

  • PLO leader Yasser Arafat died in 2004, and a year later, the second Intifada ended, Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip were dismantled, and Israeli soldiers and 9,000 settlers left the enclave.
  • A year later, Palestinians voted in a general election for the first time.
  • Hamas won a majority. However, a Fatah-Hamas civil war broke out, lasting for months, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians.
  • Hamas expelled Fatah from the Gaza Strip, and Fatah – the main party of the Palestinian Authority – resumed control of parts of the West Bank.
  • In June 2007, Israel imposed a land, air and naval blockade on the Gaza Strip, accusing Hamas of “terrorism”.

The wars on the Gaza Strip

  • Israel has launched four protracted military assaults on Gaza: in 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2021. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed, including many children , and tens of thousands of homes, schools and office buildings have been destroyed.
  • Rebuilding has been next to impossible because the siege prevents construction materials, such as steel and cement, from reaching Gaza.
  • The 2008 assault involved the use of internationally banned weaponry, such as phosphorus gas.
  • In 2014, over a span of 50 days, Israel killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, including 1,462 civilians and close to 500 children.
  • During the  assault , called Operation Protective Edge by the Israelis, about 11,000 Palestinians were wounded, 20,000 homes were destroyed and half a million people displaced .
