Drafting and Submitting Your Application

There are a number of stages that are required in order to prepare and submit your application, a checklist for this process may be found  here (DOCX 23.0 KB) .

The first task is to formulate a research topic and project which is relevant to Aboriginal communities and is appropriately sized to the selected program (PhD or MRes, for the difference please see  here ). Within this stage it is important to both align your research topic to a relevant discipline (e.g. sociology or history), consider which methods and methodology to be adopted (e.g. surveys, quantitative or qualitative) and ensure it is achievable within the time allotted time period (not too large or small).

We advise speaking with the HDR Support Person from the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Aboriginal Leadership (see below for contact details) or an academic known to you who may be able to assist you in this regard.

For the application process itself, there this an initial expression of interest to submit and, if this is approved, you may then prepare your research proposal and application (see  Apply Now ). The research proposal is a short two-page pitch for your project, outlining why it is important, how it will be undertaken and what it will seek to achieve. A set of resources are provided below to assist you to complete your proposal, including some proposals for research completed by Aboriginal researchers at the University of Tasmania. For further information, we recommend  Social Research Methods edited by Distinguished Professor Maggie Walter.

After submitting your application for candidature, please contact  [email protected] with your name, application ID number and the name of the scholarship you have applied for.

Dr Kate McPherson was an inspirational teacher and educator who died prematurely in 2007 from motor neurone disease. Kate’s career had taken her from her native England to many parts of the world, teaching and working in adult migrant education and English as a second language programs before her final role at the University of Tasmania lecturing in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages). She was highly regarded for her academic leadership in the area and for her compassion for her students.

Kate McPherson had expressed a desire through her estate to support the study in Australia of Fijian women graduates of the University of the South Pacific. Her hope was that such opportunity would assist them to overcome some of the limitations that poverty, political instability and gender place on educational and career opportunities for women in the region. Kate’s desire to support Fijian women in particular stemmed from her deep affection for the country and its people gained while working in the University in Suva and her wish to foster connections with Tasmania.

The trustees of her estate have established a scholarship in her name to allow students from Fiji to undertake postgraduate studies in education at the University of Tasmania.

Australian experiences of algorithmic culture on TikTok - PhD Scholarship

We're looking for students to study this topic.

Digital Media Research Centre

Supervisors

australian research council phd scholarship

External supervisors

  • Dr Jonathon Hutschinson, University of Sydney
  • Dr Joanne Gray, University of Sydney

Join a world-leading research team examining how recommender systems are shaping personalised and shared experiences of algorithmic culture in Australia. The project is focused on TikTok and engages with both professional TikTok creators and users using innovative computational and traditional research approaches.

The empirical work is structured into three streams:

  • In the Platform Stream we observe the type of content TikTok recommends on the least-personalised version of the platform, to create a close-to-generic baseline of the Australian experience of algorithmic culture on TikTok.
  • In the Audiences Stream work with personal platform data, donated by TikTok users participating in the study as ‘citizen scientists’. We combine this data with a set of in-depth interviews with a subset of our participating TikTok users.
  • In the Creators Stream we generate data from a panel of Australian-based creators participating in the study. Our creator panel is a mixture of independent content creators, alongside those who have professional representation through our partner Amplify, a Sydney-based social media agency. Similar to the Audiences Stream, we combine both computational and traditional methods in this stream.

Research activities

As a PhD student in this project you will work across the Platform and Audience Streams (defined above). You are able to define your own specific research questions within these two streams. Contact the supervisors to discuss your specific ideas. As a starting point for these discussions you may want to consider the topic of how TikTok ‘challenges’ are recommended over time, and for different users.

The project is funded by the Australia Research Council to generate the following outcomes:

  • The first longitudinal and systematic study of how recommender systems are shaping cultural experiences on TikTok in Australia and how Australian users and content creators perceive and rationalise these processes.
  • Methodological innovation that bridges the gaps between universal and individual perspectives, goes beyond time-limited ‘snapshot’ studies, and advances citizen science for the digital environment.
  • Empirical evidence translated into actionable findings and recommendations to underpin effective evidence-based policymaking.

Skills and experience

We are looking for a student with a recent Master in Communication and Media Studies or in a related field. We believe you have an interest to learn both quantitative and qualitative research methods and we expect you to have at least some experience of computational research methods, such as collecting and analysing data from social media platforms. Contact the supervisors if you have any questions about these criteria.

Australian Government RTP Scholarship (International)

Funded by the Australian government and valued at up to $143,881, the Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship covers tuition fees and provides a living-costs stipend to support outstanding international research students.

How to apply

Commencing students should select the check box to be considered for the RTP scholarship when submitting your postgraduate research degree application. A separate application is not required. However, you must submit your research degree course application before the relevant RTP deadlines.

Additional application information

International RTP selection is usually completed several months prior to your study commencement date. This means if you wish to commence in Research Period 1 (1 January) or Research Period 2 (1 March) you will need to have submitted your research degree application in September the year prior. If you wish to start in Research Period 3 (1 July) or Research Period 4 (1 October) you will need to have applied in December, the year prior. Please check the table below for exact dates.

Refer to the application and award timeline table below for details.

You cannot defer RTP beyond each calendar year. If you have submitted your course application after the deadline you will automatically be considered for RTP in the next round and receive an outcome from the later date.

You must submit all required documentation for your admission application, and Research Experience evidence (if applicable) to be considered in the relevant award timeline. Please note that your scholarship outcome and course application outcome may be received at separate times.

RTP scholarships are based on academic merit and are highly competitive. You will generally need to have an outstanding academic record, and any research publications will also be highly regarded.

Currently, enrolled HDR students must apply here . Please note that if you have previously been unsuccessful for RTP you will need to provide further academic qualifications or further research publications to be re-considered.

Application and award timeline

Submission deadlines.

The submission deadline refers to the date a student will need to meet, in order to be considered for an offer round.

New students can be considered for an RTP scholarship by completing the course application by the submission deadline. Current HDR students will need to submit a  separate application  by the submission deadline.

Current students must refer to the relevant submission deadline to be considered in the upcoming, international round. For example, currently enrolled international students must submit their documents by 21 December 2023 to receive an outcome in February 2024.

If you are a prospective student and have elected to be considered for an RTP scholarship, as part of your application for admission, please ensure you submit and all mandatory documents by the submission deadline. For example, if you wish to receive an RTP scholarship outcome in February 2024 and are commencing in research period 3 or 4 2024, you will need to complete your submission by 21 December 2023. Any submission after 21 December 2023 may result your scholarship application being considered in the next international round in November 2024.

The RTP stipends are valued at $40,109 per annum (2024 rate). The RTP International Scholarship provides a stipend to assist with living costs and overseas health cover as well as tuition fees offsets (i.e. no tuition fees are applicable).

Who's eligible

  • be a commencing or enrolled international postgraduate research student
  • have an outstanding record of academic achievement and research potential (research publications are highly regarded)

Climate crisis puts australia’s ski industry on slippery slope, but not all hope is lost.

Australia’s ski industry is at risk of major disruptions and shorter seasons if the current level of climate pollution continues, according to new modelling from Protect Our Winters Australia (POW) and The Australian National University (ANU). The report found the average ski season across all resorts in Australia will be 44 days shorter by 2050 under a mid-greenhouse gas emissions scenario and 55 days shorter under a high-emissions scenario.

Snow mountain

It also shows that despite a dramatic decline in snowfall under mid- and high-emissions scenarios, the Australian snow industry would fare significantly better if decisive action is taken to reduce climate pollution in line with a low-emissions scenario this decade. Under a low-emissions scenario, the ski season would be 28 days shorter by 2050, before starting to improve by 2080 if emissions are kept down. The researchers argue unless urgent climate action is taken, some ski resorts are at risk of closing their doors for good. Report co-author and ANU researcher Ruby Olsson said in addition to rapidly phasing out fossil fuels and adopting renewable energy systems like wind and solar, support measures are needed to help ski resorts stand resilient in the face of climate change and help the communities that depend on the Australian Alps. “We need to support vulnerable resorts to diversify into year-round tourism. This could include a coordinated approach between state governments, assisted by the Australian Alps Liaison Committee or Australian Alps Ministerial Council, to support those ski resorts that are most at risk,” she said. "The more we can limit the impacts of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the less expensive adaptation by businesses, communities, and the environment will be and the more options we will have. “Waiting to act increases the risk of resort closure or species extinction. Resort closures and extinctions are difficult or impossible to undo. So, this decade is critical in terms of taking urgent climate action.” Protect Our Winters Australia Director and Lead Advocate Sam Quirke said: “The ski season last year was tough, with minimal snowfall and some resorts having to shut their doors early. This report shows that we’ll see that happening more and more frequently, as ski seasons become more erratic and harder to predict due to global warming, until we do something about it.” The researchers argue the health of the Australian Alps is critical to Australia’s agricultural needs and water security. According to the report, snow-melt water runoff provides an average of 9,600 gigalitres of water per year into the Murray-Darling Basin, which is around 29 per cent of the Basin’s total annual flows. At the same time, climate change will directly reduce rainfall in the Australian Alps by five to 24 per cent by 2050 and indirectly reduce catchment yield through ecological changes. Co-author Professor Adrienne Nicotra from ANU, who is also Director of the Australian Mountain Research Facility, said climate change is already having a significant impact on the native animals and plants that call the Australian Alps home. “As well as keeping fossil fuels in the ground to prevent devastating climate change, we need investment that brings together mountain scientists, policy makers, resort owners and Alpine communities to map out a plan that sees them adapt,” Professor Nicotra said. The full report is available on the Protect Our Winters Australia (POW) website .
