‘I asked men who want to date me to write a 500-word essay so I knew they weren’t wasting my time’
Steve Hopkins
One man sent a PowerPoint presentation
A woman fed-up with “horrendous” dating experiences started demanding men send her a 500-word essay to date her.
And, rather than turning potential suitors off, Lauren Kempton was inundated with applications. One even included a PowerPoint presentation.
Nevertheless, the 36-year-old is still single.
Lauren said she wrote a post requesting the essay on her Hinge profile as a “bit of a joke”.
The mum-of-one requested men send her an essay on “how you will not waste any time”.
Lauren got several responses – including a stand-out application from one man who even made an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.
But, despite going on a date with her “winning” match, the pair didn’t hit it off and Lauren remains single. She’s even taking a break from dating apps.
Lauren,, from Portsmouth, Hampshire, said: “I’ve had mostly really bad experiences with the dating apps – the culture of dating online is shocking.
”I’ve had some awful dates but mostly it’s boring – the same old conversations.
“People might think asking for an essay was full on of me but it was really a bit of fun, I didn’t expect someone to make so much effort.”
Lauren, who works for a skincare clinic, said the dating initiative, “restored my faith in men”, but she felt the need to take a step back from finding a partner.
“I’m putting my energy into other things and thinking ‘if it will happen, it will happen’,” she explained.
“But asking for an essay is definitely a good way of weeding out what you don’t want.”
After growing sick of being ghosted and flirty chats going nowhere, Lauren put the dating application request on her Hinge profile in May last year, having been single for two years after the end of a 10-year relationship with her child’s dad.
She said she got a few responses – but one was stand-out and landed himself a date.
He asked Lauren for her email address and wrote her a detailed essay – promising to “reply swiftly to messages”.
The man also promised not to waste each other’s time if there “is no spark”.
A portion of the essay read: “I would start by ensuring that any plans we made were kept to.
“This would also include indoor and outdoor date plans depending on the weather, time, cost etc. (this includes agreeing to a Harry Potter Marathon).”
He added that he would “ensure that communication was prioritised, this includes contact methods such as, text, call, FaceTime – all of which can be done depending on Lauren’s preferred method of contact.”
The man also set out some expectations of his own, writing that he is “a big fan of knowing where I stand with people, if you like me, let me know, if you don’t, let me know”.
“This would ensure that Lauren’s time is not wasted on dating someone that there is no connection or spark with.
“This obviously works both ways, but the focus of this essay is regarding Lauren’s time.”
It came accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation and after the pair matched they began speaking and arranged a date.
Intrigued if a romance could blossom, Lauren met up with him – but unfortunately, it didn’t go anywhere.
Lauren recalled: “It (the essay request) got a few different responses at the time but I’ve been single for three years now and I’ve not found something I’m ready to settle down for.
“At the time, the request did illicit some good conversations, like interviewing someone – because you’re already saying you’re not going to put up with time-wasters.
“It’s a good way of getting people to show their humorous side, and spend a bit of time making an effort.
“It shows you who they are and that they have read your profile and understand your humour.
“But I needed a new tactic so I’m not really on the apps any more.”
Lauren added: “If I cant get what I want out of the apps, I figured it will happen when it’s supposed to.”

I make men submit a 500-word essay to date me: do not waste my time.
One woman is looking for the write man.
Lauren Kempton, from England, requires her suitors to write a 500-word essay if they want to date her.
Feeling fed up with online dating, Kempton revealed a dating strategy last year that resurfaced recently.
“Asking for an essay is definitely a good way of weeding out what you don’t want,” she said.
On the 36-year-old’s Hinge account, she made it clear if they wanted to have a chance with her, they must submit an application explaining “how you will not waste any time.”
“It shows you who they are and that they have read your profile and understand your humor,” she quipped.
She initially added the requirement to her profile as a joke, but many bachelors took it seriously.
“People might think asking for an essay was full on of me, but it was really a bit of fun; I didn’t expect someone to make so much effort,” Kempton said.
One suitor went above and beyond, submitting a PowerPoint presentation with his detailed essay.
He promised to “reply swiftly to messages,” not waste her time if there is “no spark” and plan thoughtful dates.
“I would start by ensuring that any plans we made were kept to.This would also include indoor and outdoor date plans depending on the weather, time, cost etc (this includes agreeing to a Harry Potter Marathon),” he wrote.
He mentions communication being a priority, which “includes contact methods such as text, call, FaceTime.”
Just like Kempton, he didn’t want his time wasted either.
“I am a big fan of knowing where I stand with people; if you like me, let me know; if you don’t, let me know,” he signed off.
Noticing the effort singles made “restored [Kempton’s] faith in men.”
After reviewing many applications, she went on a date with the best candidate, but unfortunately, it never flourished into anything special.
The 500-word essay strategy turned out to be a bust for the mom of one, but she encourages other singles to try the method.
“It’s a good way of getting people to show their humorous side and spend a bit of time making an effort,” shared Kempton.
Relationship therapist Jaime Bronstein seconds Kempton’s strategy, “The challenge is always, “How can I make myself stand out and show that I’m special?’ Asking for a 500-word essay is certainly a way to achieve that.”
Bronstein told The Post, “In life you need to be bold and unique to get what you want. Kempton is simply asking the men to step up to the plate and show her some effort.”
Kempton has taken a step back from the dating scene, “I’ve been single for three years now, and I’ve not found something I’m ready to settle down for,” she added. “I’m putting my energy into other things and thinking if it will happen, it will happen.”

Woman Says She Makes Men Write & Submit A 500-Word Essay To Date Her — 'Don't Waste My Time'
She says it helps weed out the people who would've ended up wasting her time in the end..
Written on May 13, 2023
In the age of modern dating, many people have started fine-tuning their requirements for a partner in order to avoid going out with potential matches that may not be so compatible.
Such was the case for one woman, Lauren Kempton, whose online dating profile has one specific requirement that any man who wants to take her on a date must adhere to. While many people may find it unconventional, it seems to have worked for her.

Kempton asks men to write and submit a 500-word essay on how they won't waste her time.
According to Daily Mail, Kempton, 36, from Portsmouth, UK. isn't playing around with the men on dating apps, or at least more specifically, Hinge. Revealing that she is done with going out with men, only for it to lead nowhere, she has devised a plan to prevent it from happening.
"Asking for an essay is definitely a good way of weeding out what you don't want," Kempton explained. On her Hinge account, for one of her prompts, she shared that if any man wants a chance at a date with her, they must submit an application detailing "how you will not waste my time."
"It shows you who they are and that they have read your profile and understand your humor," she added. At first, the requirement had only been a joke, and Kempton herself didn't think anyone would take it seriously, or even submit an essay.

However, one man decided to rise to the occasion, and, in an effort to score a date with Kempton, not only wrote a detailed 500-word essay as she'd asked but also created an entire PowerPoint presentation on how he would be the perfect gentleman to Kempton.
He not only promised to "reply swiftly" to her messages, but if there were "no spark" he would simply tell her instead of wasting her time. He also pointed out that he would always plan thoughtful dates so Kempton would never have to lift a finger.
"I would start by ensuring that any plans we made were kept to. This would include indoor and outdoor date plans depending on the weather, time, cost, etc," Kempton shared his submission. It seemed the two were a match made in heaven, as he too, would prefer someone who didn't waste his time.
"I am a big fan of knowing where I stand with people; if you like me, let me know; if you don't, let me know," he concluded.

Kempton revealed that she ended up going on a date with him.
The mother-of-one ended up going out with the winning match, but unfortunately, she explained that there just wasn't anything there and nothing took off. "People might think asking for an essay was full on of me but it was really a bit of fun."
"At the time, it restored my faith in men — but I'm not really using [dating] apps anymore these days," she said after her date with her Hinge match. "I'm putting my energy into other things and thinking if it will happen, it will happen."
Kempton, who's been single for three years, encourages others to try something like this on their own dating profiles. "It's a good way of getting people to show their humorous side, and spend a bit of time making an effort."
In a time of online dating, it can be hard to make sure your profile stands out from everyone else's, but it seems Kempton has found a foolproof way to make sure that not only is she making an impression, but that she isn't settling for less when it comes to men on dating apps.

A 500 Word Essay on How I Will Waste Your Time
FYI, I’m gonna forward this to anyone who ever shows the slightest interest in me from now on.
I have a thick skin, words can’t crush me. (Neither can cars.) Until they do. And then you’re I’m like, wait, what? What’s happening? I cope with this by resolving it on my own without letting the other one know. I do this with me, myself, and I. I have a huge debate in my head. You know, with podiums and everything. And all of my personalities present, arguing their case. I know my approach is counter-productive and at times self-destructive but I am working on it.
My humor is impeccable. Hilarious is my middle name. (I got Balkan blood running through my veins, we don’t have middle names! Or at least as far as I know since I don’t know anyone with my background who does.) What do you like, what do you hate? I can do it all. Dark and twisted? Check. Light, playful, and not offensive? Check. Puerile mixed with a good dose of anti and dad jokes? Check. Self-loathing slash self-deprecating? Big fucking check. In fact, this one’s checked so hard, you can clearly see the marks of the lines and the color bleeding through the paper. I am funny. But it’s in small doses only. So beware. You will roll your eyes so far back, they might just get stuck there.
When I am down, I find solace in being on my own. I enjoy speaking to myself, writing dumb little lists, all in an attempt to make sense of what it is that is bringing me down, and keeping me where I am. And then I am back at it again, being my cheerful self! I am neither crazy nor asocial for doing this. I just love space so much, I wouldn’t mind suffocating on it. But hey, this doesn’t mean we can’t share this space. There is room for two. Just saying.
I got mad skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If we part ways for whatever reason, I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. (And I definitely will not kill you. I’ve seen Orange Is the New Black and Vis-a-Vis, so na, thanks, I’m good.) But I will write about you. So, if you read this and wonder, “Is this about me?” then the answer is yes. It is always yes.
The world is your oyster. And I’m your salt water. I either speak in riddles or I don’t speak at all.
I usually struggle with word limits. But since 25% +/- is allowed (right?), I was sure I would make use of that. But nah. I got this. 500 words. Drops mic.
PS: I saw this sentence in a tinder bio once. Wait, hold on. I misread that. I just checked again. It actually said, “Write me a 500 word essay on how you will not waste my time.” Crap.
Nice article, gonna keep these things in mind. Really useful for my research and professional activities.
