FAQs about the Master's Thesis
The following overview is designed to help in the planning of your Thesis (Master's Thesis). Background of the questions and information are repeated requests to the academic advisor (currently Dr. Elke Hochmuth, a member of both audit committees).
Information given is based on:
- The examination regulations for the Master's Program "Urban Culture, Society and Space (UCSS) ” (particularly § 20, only in German available); Chairman of the Audit Committee (Interim): Prof. Dr. Jens Martin Gurr.
- as well as the examination regulations for the Master's Program "Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) ", (particularly § 20, only in German available); Chairman of the Audit Committee (Interim): Prof. Dr. Jens Martin Gurr.
The FAQ are divided into the following topics:
1. Basic information on the Master's Thesis 2. Selection of the Topic (before the official registration) 3. Registration of Thesis 4. Processing of the Master's Thesis (after registration) 5. Delivery of Thesis 6. Grading of the Master Thesis
All enrolled students from our Study Programmes study according to the new valid examination regulations (regardless of the start of their studies).
Since the winter semester 2018/19 there are new examination regulations. Major changes: The programme “Sustainable Urban Technologies” has been renamed in “Sustainable Urban Development”. Students of this programme who started their studies before the winter semester 2018/19 and still wish to have the title "Sustainable Urban Technologies" on their certificates must submit an application when registering their Master's thesis (cf. 34 (2)). Please ask Ms. Heckmann at the Examination Office.
In addition, changes have been made for both degree programmes: The overall grade of the certificate is calculated from all grades of all modules (cf. §27). This applies to all students who started their studies in winter semester 18/19 or later.
FAQ - Basic information on the Master's Thesis
Q1: How long is the processing time for the Master's Thesis? 6 months (26 weeks) after registration (written application) (see PO §20 (5)).
Q2: What text volume must have the Thesis? The text volume of the Master's Thesis must have at least 28,000 words (excluding bibliography and annex) (PO §20 (9)).
Q3: In what language I have to write the Master's Thesis? Students from "SUD" have to write their Thesis in English. Exceptions must be regulated by the Audit Committee. Students of UCSS can write the Thesis in English or in German (PO §20 (8)).
2) FAQ - Selection of the Topic (before the official registration)
Q4: How can I find a topic for my Master’s Thesis? Certainly during your studies or during your internship you come across some topics, which are more interesting for you than others. You want to have in one of these areas deeper knowledge? So perhaps that might be a topic for your Thesis. If you have found such topic, please discuss it with a potential supervisor and clarify with him/her, whether it is a practicable for a Master’s Thesis. Afterwards please define it exactly under the supervision of your supervisor. Important is also, to have one central research question. Aterwards please register your Thesis at the examination office.
Q5: Can I from a / m lecturers / in a Master’s thesis topic get? Yes of course. Please ask a lecturer of your choice, whether he/she has an idea for a topic for you. However he /she must be a lecturer of our Master’s Programmes (PO §20 (4) and (12)).
Q6: Who can supervise may Thesis ? All lecturers from the Master's Programmes SUD and UCCS can supervise your Master's Thesis. The lecturer you have chosen should be informed and should agree with your chosen topic. Please discuss the topics with him/her and please consider the hints.
Usually, the first supervisor should be from the University of Duisburg-Essen and the second supervisor can be from outside (from another University or from a non-university institution (PO §20 (4) and (12)).
Q7: Can also external persons (i.e. non university members) supervise the Master's Thesis? Yes, but external persons must have at least a university Degree (at least Diploma or Master’s Degree). However, they must be ordered from the respective audit committees. For this purpose, please contact the academic advisor.
Q8: Can I write my Master’s Thesis in another country? You can write your Thesis abroad, but it needs to be registered at the University of Duisburg-Essen and supervised by a professor of the University of Duisburg-Essen. The other supervisor can be a foreigner, who has sufficient English Language skills and have an academic background (academic Degree necessary) (see Q7 and 8).
3) FAQ - Registration of Thesis
Q9: When can I register my Thesis? The Master's Thesis can only be registered if you have acquired 75 credits in your Master's Programme (§20 (2)).
Q10: Where and how can I register for the Master's Thesis? In the examination office; currently the contact person is Ms Heckmann ([email protected]). You will receive an application template from her in which you fill the topic and the name of both supervisors. (both supervisors need to be informed by you and have agreed to the topic). After filling you can hand in the template at the examination office. Then you will receive the deadline for submission. After handing in, you are registered for your Master's Thesis.
Please note that the topic on the template is completely identical to the topic of your finished Thesis ($ 20 (3)).
Please make sure that both supervisors were informed about the topic and they have already agreed to support that topic. Otherwise there could be problems after registration.
Q11: Is there a deadline for registration of the Master’s Thesis? No.
4) FAQ - Processing of the Master's Thesis (after registration)
Q12: Is there a possibility of extension of the processing time? Yes, in justified cases, the processing time can be extended up to 6 weeks. An extension must be requested by writing and the student has to hand in the request to the examination office. The examination office must receive the request two weeks before the given deadline of the Thesis (latest) (§20 (5)).
Q13: What can I do if I get sick during the processing time of my Master's Thesis? The processing time of the Master Thesis will be usually extended for the days of illness. The student has to verify the illness by a medical certificate and has to hand in it as soon as possible to the examination office, especially if the disease is directly related to the deadline of the Master’s Thesis. The Examination Office will calculate from the time of interruption and informs the students about the new deadline. The medical certificate must include a description of the health impairment (about the reference to specific pain). The exact name of the disease is advisable, but not mandatory (Section 20 (5)).
Q14: Can I change the topic of my Master’s Thesis? The topic can only be returned/changed within the first four weeks after registration of the Thesis. The reasoned restitution must be requested and approved through the audit committee. After acceptance you can choose a new topic (§20 (6)).
Q15: Are there any guidelines on the format of the master's thesis? The Master's Thesis must have at least 28,000 words (excluding bibliography and annex) (PO §20 (9)). In addition, please hand it in in a DIN A4 printed and bound (glue binding and no spiral binding) form as well as in suitable electronic form (§20 (8)).
Please select a common and well readable format such as (this is only a suggestion, please feel free to contact your first supervisor for clarifying the format and the preferred citation):
Left Margin: 3 cm; Right margin: 3 to 5 cm; Margin Top: 2.5 cm; Border bottom: 2cm; Footnotes: same page, numbered consecutively; Line spacing (text): 1.5 spacing; Line spacing (footnotes): one line; Font Size (text): 12 point Times New Roman or Arial 11 points; Justified, hyphenation; Font size (footnotes): 10 point Times New Roman or Arial.
5) FAQ - Delivery of Thesis
Q16: Where do I have to submit the Thesis? In the examination office, currently to Ms Heckmann (examination office).
Q17: What exactly, I have to hand in to the examination office on the given deadline? You have to hand in during the processing time three print versions of your Master's Thesis. The print versions must be in a format of DIN-A4 and the prints must be casebound (glue binding and no spiral binding). And please hand in additionally an electronic version from your Master’s Thesis (§20 (8)).
Q18: What should I consider when making? You must hand in your Thesis latest at the given deadline. The Topic of the Thesis must be absolutely identical with the Topic of your application for registration. The Thesis must include a written declaration that you have written the Thesis independently and with no other than the specified sources and aids. And of course all citations have been marked (§ 20 (10)).
6) FAQ - Grading of the Master’s Thesis
Q19: When will I receive usually the grade for my Master's Thesis? According to the examination regulations, the supervisors have to proof the Thesis within six weeks. The process of evaluation, however, can take longer due to the workload of the supervisors (§20 (14)).
Q20: Is there an oral exam for Master's Thesis? The audit committees of SUD and UCSS have determined that students have to absolve only an oral examination, if the marks of the two supervisor of the Master's Thesis differs considerably (a whole or more than a whole grade).
Q21: It is possible to repeat a Master’s Thesis, when I have failed my first Thesis (grading of 5.0)? Yes, once (§21).
Q22: Is my study finished with a successfully passed Master's Thesis (grading at least 4.0)? Your studies will only be completed when you have received a total of 120 credits (incl. 30 credits for the Master's Thesis). So you have to absolve all examinations from all nine Modules.

2. Contact Points
- Professor Heiner Stuckenschmidt: Please send your application to Christian Meilicke (Bachelor) and Ines Rehbein (Master). Please also note that possible starting dates at the Chair of Artificial Intelligence (Heiner Stuckenschmidt) are: 1st March, 1st June, 1st September, 1st Dezember
- Professor Gemulla: please send your application to Simon Forbat . You can send the proposal anytime.
- Professors Ponzetto and Glavaš: please send your application to Ines Rehbein . You can send the proposal anytime.
- All other chairs ( Prof. Bizer , Prof. Paulheim ): please send your application including the documents mentioned above to the respective professor or research associate working on the topic you are interested in. Theses can be started anytime.
3. Topic Proposal
- Before you can start your thesis, you need to provide a convincing topic proposal (the so-called exposé).
- Your thesis proposal should align with the SMART criteria , which see.
- The proposal must be written using the proposal template and must not exceed 2 pages (excluding references).
- Do not spend too much space on explaining the preliminaries. Focus on what you want to do.
- You may (or should) discuss the focus and scope of your thesis with your advisor.
- Hand in the proposal only if you think it is ready.
- You may receive revision requests for your proposal. If so, address these requests and hand-in the proposal again.
- Your proposal should be divided into three subsections: “Introduction”, “Background”, and “Goals and Work Plan”. Make sure to include your name and a preliminary title of your topic into the proposal.
- Introduction. A short sketch (1 paragraph) of the topic. It may be easier to write this at the very end, when the other parts are finished.
- Background. A compact description of the relevant concepts as well as a chain of arguments that clearly leads to the “what and why” of the proposal. Your arguments should be scientific; e.g., clearly follow from the discussion so far, or be derived from cited work, or be considered common knowledge. Do not speculate. To write this part well, you already have to attain some understanding of the relevant literature. Introduction and background together should not take more than one page.
- Goals and Work Plan. This is the largest and most important part of your proposal. It expresses and motivates the tasks, goals, and research questions that you want to address, as well as how you want to proceed to answer these questions. Don't over-do it: You are not expected to come up with intricate solutions already, but rather to demonstrate that you have a clear understanding of the scope of your thesis and the entailed tasks and challenges (e.g., possible approaches, possible outcomes, evaluation, planned time). Also here: stay scientific and reasonable! Make statements such as “I will do . . . to investigate whether X can improve Y” instead of “I will improve Y with X”. Structure this section by the main research questions or tasks, include rough time estimates and milestones, and mark must-have and nice-to-have items as appropriate. As a hint, the very first task or goal usually is that you attain a solid understanding of related work (literature, software tools, . . . ).
- Note that technical details (formulas, algorithms, long lists of names, etc.) are not part of the proposal. Prefer high-level and intuitive descriptions, and be only as technical as you absolutely need to be. After reading these guidelines, you may feel that writing a proposal is a lot of work, almost like writing a thesis by itself. You are right! By acomplishing this step, you already completed the first milestone of your thesis: Having a clear understanding of what is coming next and what to do in the following next three/ six months. You are now ready to start!
4. Registration
- Once your proposal has been accepted, register your thesis with the secretary of the respective chair right away. At this time, both topic, advisor and starting date (and hence, also the end date) are fixed.
5. Supervision
- You are responsible to schedule all meetings.
- Schedule regular meetings with your advisor to discuss your progress.
- Schedule milestone meetings with the professor/ senior advisor around every other month. These meetings should consist of a short presentation with well-prepared slides, as well as meaningful results which show progress.
- Please send the presentation slides to the professor/ senior advisor beforehand.
- The advisors will generally neither read drafts of your thesis, nor write or review your code.
6. Writing the Report
- Your report is the main document describing what you did in your thesis, and it is the main input for grading. Your report must be written in English using the provided LATEX template .
- Start writing early.
- Keep notes throughout, including detailed parameter settings for all experiments.
- Discuss the thesis outline with your advisor.
- Include an abstract.
- The target audience for your report are people with a similar background in computer science. Do not repeat basic textbook material.
- Stay concise and to the point.
- Avoid low-level details (e.g., long code listings). Make use of an appendix for relevant additional material.
- It is recommended to read the relevant parts of Writing for Computer Science by Justin Zobel.
- Use examples and figures throughout.
7. Submitting
- Hand in two printed copies of your thesis in the secretary's office . In addition, submit a digital copy (PDF) of your thesis via e-mail.
- Make an appointment upfront.
- Along with your thesis, submit your source code, data, and instructions for installing and running your code on a CD-ROM, a memory stick, or an online code repository (e.g., GitHub). If your data does not fit on the CD/ stick, include a relevant sample of your data. You are advised to discuss the details of code submission with your supervisor.
- If you need a certificate that you have passed prior to the final grading, inform us at least two weeks before the submission. The earliest possible date for providing such a certificate is two weeks after the submission.
8. Using special Hardware
- In case your private computer is not capable enougth, there is the posibility, to use powerful hardware remotly.

UD’s non-thesis M.S. in Animal Science prepares Kayla Pettiford for veterinary school
May 02, 2024 Written by Molly Schafer | Photos by Jeremy Wayman
Growing up with guinea pigs, hamsters, parakeets, turtles, and fish, University of Delaware alumna Kayla Pettiford planned a career in veterinary medicine from a young age.
"It's always been what I wanted to do,” said Pettiford, an alumna of UD’s non-thesis master’s in Animal Science . “And I can't see myself doing anything else."
Veterinary school acceptance is notoriously competitive, and the rigorous training can make for a stressful experience.
“I know many students feel overwhelmed and stressed in veterinary school, and I didn't want to feel that way,” said Pettiford. “Everybody's journey to vet school can look a little different. I knew I needed more technical understanding and background.”
Pettiford graduated with an undergraduate degree in pre-veterinary science from Delaware State University in 2021. Pettiford took her time researching master’s programs. UD's concentration in Veterinary Biosciences, Biotechnology, and One Health (VBBOH) stood out.
“I wanted to put myself at a university where I would gain the most experience,” explained Pettiford.
At UD, Pettiford worked closely with Behnam Abasht , professor of animal genetics, on his research into wooden breast, a muscle disorder in commercial broiler chickens.
“We hatched the eggs, cared for the chicks, performed necropsies, looked through the microscope,” Pettiford remarked. “Seeing the research from beginning to end was eye-opening. And Prof. Abasht walked me through the process.”
Pettiford found the study of histopathology, the microscopic examination of tissue and cells to diagnose disease, exciting.
“Histopathology wasn't even on my radar before the non-thesis master’s program,” she emphasized. “Now, it will become my focus; my lab and research experience at UD gave me that direction.”
After finishing her UD graduate program, Pettiford is ready for veterinary school. She is thankful to Prof. Tanya Gressley, associate dean of graduate programs, who answered Pettiford's many questions from the application process through graduation.
“She helped prepare me,” acknowledged Pettiford. “I feel confident that when I go to vet school, I will have a solid background to help me. That is the most important thing: having a solid foundation.”
Pettiford believes good communication skills are essential to succeed as a veterinarian. Her role as a teaching assistant for Prof. Gressley’s Animal Handling (ANFS 112 ) course helped her grow these skills. Communication is vital in her current role as a veterinary technician at Animal Haven Veterinary Center in Bear, Delaware.
“I just love meeting new pet parents,” said Pettiford. “It's always a good experience to teach them new things and answer questions that they might have.”
Working with small animals and cancer patients as a veterinary technician broadened her animal handling experience.
“I love what I do as a technician: making sure the pet is comfortable, doing the best I can for their care,” attested Pettiford “That's something I take pride in doing.”
Pettiford prepares her veterinary school applications with an eye to the future. She plans to focus on exotic animals and wildlife along with histopathology.
“I want every day I show up to work to be unique and spontaneous!”

Electric-autonomous shuttle system by Beep debuts in Mississippi at MSU this fall
Contact: Allison Matthews
STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University again is on the cutting edge of technology, innovation and research—introducing an electric-autonomous passenger shuttle system pilot program to campus and community this fall.
With deployment by Beep, Inc., a leading provider of autonomous and electric shared mobility solutions, the system will be the first of its kind in the state and in the Southeastern Conference, and is designed for safety, sustainability, accessibility and efficiency.
Two shuttles, each seating up to 11 passengers, including an attendant, are slated to be available for riders in September as part of a pilot project to evaluate how the autonomous vehicles complement other modes of campus transportation. Two routes are planned to shuttle students between the core of campus and key housing points, as well as popular entertainment destinations.
“We are excited to announce this special project which is going through several layers of approval, including the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Jeremiah Dumas, MSU executive director of transportation. “Safety is the highest priority, as it is with any method of transportation,” he added, explaining the vehicles will not be allowed to operate on roads signed at more than 25 mph and are equipped with AI-enabled remote human supervision and self-governance. Although they will be self-driving, Dumas said each will have a full-time attendant on board.
“This trained staff member can operate the vehicle and assist passengers when needed and serve as an ambassador to provide information. Similar vehicles have been in use at Yellowstone, in the Orlando, Florida metropolitan area, and near the Braves Stadium in Atlanta, at the Honolulu airport and beyond,” Dumas said. “Everywhere they’re deployed, people love them.”
Beep will provide the autonomous mobility solutions, services and electric vehicles to MSU throughout the tentative pilot period of Sept. 1-Nov. 30.
In addition to piloting how the vehicles meet campus needs, the program also will gather information—research data informing transportation planning in rural-urban environments.
“It’s natural for MSU to lead in applying this type of technology on campus and in the local town-and-gown community context because we already are a national and global leader in the realm of unmanned and autonomous vehicles,” Dumas emphasized. “MSU’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems and Raspet Flight Research Laboratory are doing research on autonomous, remote vehicles.” He said he hopes for the chance to partner with other institutions to form a research consortium and expand the study period to further test use of autonomous vehicles in rural-urban settings.
The university contracted with Beep this past December and is conducting the development phase of the pilot program this spring, mapping and creating three-dimensional scans of routes in preparation for the fall deployment. The process includes identifying parking and charging locations and determining routes and stop locations. Beep currently is using lidar technology, which uses light detection and ranging for precise measurements, to finalize required digital maps.
“We absolutely see this as a long-term operational opportunity for these shuttles to be part of our daily solution. Our ultimate goal is to understand the role an autonomous mobility system such as this can play on campus. Do they work on campus where there are a lot of riders, or do we need to look at a longer route with fewer riders? We don’t know yet, and we want to see what we find out,” Dumas said. “We did pretty extensive research to understand that this is something we wanted to invest in.”
Dumas said students and community members can expect more details about the vehicles and program specifics as the fall semester approaches.
