The saying goes “work and no play make Jack a dull boy”.  I always dreamt of an excursion to a very faraway country, but I never had the opportunity to do so. Last summer my dream came true! My father came home one evening very excited. “Dad, you look so happy and excited today. Have you won the lottery?” my elder sister, Edita, asked my father.  Edita came crashing into the kitchen where I was helping my mother prepare dinner, and she broke the news to us. “We are going to Italy in three days time,” she shouted, panting like a dog. She could not hide the excitement.

A two weeks vacation to Italy is just what I needed. The four of us; me, my mother, my father and my sister Edita agreed to visit Rome, Pisa, Florence and Venice. But why visit Rome? Why do many tourists visit Rome and never desire to leave? Tourists always speculate on the “fatal spell” of Italy, which causes people around the world desire to visit Italy. Is it just because as the saying goes that,  “All roads lead to Rome,” or is it  because of the appeal of the most classical civilization in the western world having its origins in ancient Rome and flourished in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque? I had mixed feelings of excitement and confusion of what lay ahead. What if the airplane was hijacked in mid-air? What if we crashed in the sea? What a wonderful experience it would be to travel in an airplane? However, vacations are vital for stress relief, health and productivity, and that is exactly what I experienced last summer. Studies have shown that a majority of people do not take vacations often enough while others actually take their work along with them. A vacation enhances creativity, enhances our general feelings of wellbeing, improves our family bonds, as well as improving our health (Elizabeth Scott, 1).

We boarded a Delta Airlines direct flight from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Rome, Italy. We landed at the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome approximately nine hours later. The flight across the North Atlantic Ocean was an experience I will always treasure. I had never thought I could be a victim of thalassophobia. I had this fear that we would crash into the sea. The flight was perfect; the cabin crew was very friendly and personal, making the long haul such an exhilarating experience. I wished Rome could have been further away. The timing of the vacation was perfect since we were to spend our vacation at a time when Italy was generally sunny and warm. I was mesmerized at the beauty that beheld my eyes; Rome is such a beautiful city. Once in Rome you experience kaleidoscopic ambiance every day. From the airport, we took a taxi to the B&B Basilica Square. We had booked the hotel for four days owing to the fact that Rome was our prime interest in the vacation. I was hungry and tired. Once inside the Hotel’s restaurant, I chose a simple but delicious bruschetta for my appetizer that was escorted by an indigenous before-dinner drink. The English speaking waiter took time trying explaining to me what bruschetta was and it’s origins. It was an indigenous Roman lamb dish, the best of lamb dishes I have yet had. My father, who will eat whatever, excitedly tried several of the indigenous dishes made with innards. His choice was the veal trotter in a temperate vegetable salad. My mother stumbled picking the wine pouring hot stew on her elegant skirt but the waiter came to her rescue. Edita could not make up her mind what to eat. She settled for some bruschetta just like me, after gazing at how I licked my fingers clean as I enjoyed mine.

The first place we visited was the coliseum. It is considered as one of the superlative works of Roman architecture and engineering; a wonderful spectacle to behold. For the four days we stayed at the B&B Basilica Square, I could hear the lions roar at night as they fought it out with the gladiators! Or was it another dream?  We visited such wonderful places such as the St Peter’s Basilica. I saw the “Pieta” sculpture done by the famous artist Michelangelo between 1498 and 1500, Basilica di San Pietro, and the Sistine Chapel; which was painted by Michelangelo in the 16 th century. We also had the privilege to visit the Capitoline Museums founded in 1471, Galleria Borghese, the Pantheon that dates back to 27 B.C, Castel Sant’ Angelo, the Catacombs; where ancient Christians were buried. The ancient spa baths of Terme di Caracalla, the Piazza di Spagna, and the Piazza Navona. I had this funny feeling, like I once bathed in the spas in the ancient times. “I think I was here in the ancient times”, I told my Dad. He almost stumbled into the spa as he laughed out loud.

The tours could not be complete fun without visiting the ancient fountains, such as the Fontana dei Barcaccia, Fontana dei Fiumi, and Fontana dei Tritone. There are also the ancient palaces such as Palazzo dei Quirinale, and Palazzo Montecitorio that used to be the residences of kings and popes. Some shopping and visits to the famous fashion streets of Via Condotti, Via Borgognona and Via Frattina was our last tour in Rome.

We left Rome and headed to Florence on a train. We arrived at the Santa Maria Novella Station and took a taxi to the De Lanzi Hotel. Piazza del Duomo was our first tour destination. Here we visited the Florence Cathedral with the Cupola del Brunelleschi, Florence Baptistery, the Giotto’s Campanile, the Loggia del Bigallo, the Arcivescovile and Canonici’s palace as well as the Opera del Duomo Museum. We were lucky to visit the Uffizi Gallery at a time when there was an exhibition. My sister, Edita, was left behind admiring an ancient Leonardo da Vinci painting and got lost in the crowds. We found her an hour later in the lobby. Imagine a twenty eight year old lady crying like a baby. Florence has some of Italy’s finest museums, gorgeous churches and cathedrals, and attractive streets and squares with stylish buildings and shops. In Florence we visited the Santa Croce Church where we saw the Galileo’s Tomb and some of the ancient telescopes as well as Michelangelo’s Tomb. We also visited The Battistero; a huge gothic cathedral built in the 4 th century, the Boboli Gardens, and the Branccacci Chapel. However, the tour of Florence was not as captivating as the tour of Rome. I longed to go back to Rome.

From Florence we headed to Pisa by train. In Pisa, we stayed at the La Pace hotel. This hotel is located fifty five yards from Pisa’s train station and a mere fifteen minute walk from the Leaning Tower. Our first destination was the leaning tower. The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre Pendente) is in fact synonymous with Pisa. I found it difficult to comprehend how it has continued to remain in that position for over seven hundred years. In Pisa, we also visited the Holy Field (Camposanto) and the Knights’ Square (Piazza dei Cavalieri), which is abundant with medieval character. The Piazza dei Cavalieri can be said to be dominated by the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, which was initially the command center of the Tuscan Knights of St. Stephen.  There are a host of gorgeous monuments in Pisa and also several other towers that are not really upright. I found it a rather weird city but full of warm people.

We left Pisa for Venice on train as usual. Venice was our last destination in the two week vacation of Italy. We stayed at The Hotel Castello. Venice has amazingly beautiful waterfront locations. We had boat trips around the Venetian Lagoon and gondola rides down the canals. This offered us  a peaceful and trouble-free way to view many famous attractions. It gave me an opportunity to practice photography with a camera I bought in Pisa. It gave me memories of splendor  attractions, such as the Gloriosa dei Frari, Basilica di Santa Maria, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute.

I could not imagine going back to Atlanta at the end of the two weeks. I should attribute this fact to the “fatal spell” of Italy that I encountered. We boarded a flight back to Atlanta via Frankfurt, an eleven hours journey covering a distance of 7900 km. What a vacation! What an experience! One can only travel to these places to know what it is like.

Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

Tips for Writing a "What I Did on Vacation" Essay

  • M.Ed., Education Administration, University of Georgia
  • B.A., History, Armstrong State University

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

Essay on Summer Vacation in 100 words

An incredible time to visit hilly destinations with family are holidays. They give an escape from the same monotonous life schedule. The summer season is an incredible time to have those stress free excursions and get in touch with nature which is nearly impossible in our daily schedules for the whole year. I visited my grandparents last year and stayed with them for two weeks. In contrast with the word summer, the cool thing about summer vacations is discovering new trails, creating new things, etc. During my stay with my grandparents, I also read novels and other books that helped me expand my knowledge of the world. For the remainder of the vacation days, I spent them playing games and cooking my favourite dishes.

Essays on Summer Vacation: 200 Words Sample

Summer is a time to bask in the warmth of the sun, explore new horizons, and create lasting memories.

During this break, I embarked on a journey of relaxation and adventure. I had the opportunity to visit the serene beaches of a coastal town. The soothing sound of waves and the gentle caress of the sea breeze offered a perfect escape from the bustling city life. The sand between my toes and the sun kissing my skin provided a sense of tranquillity.

Holidays are an amazing time for us to visit hill stations with family. The summer season is a great time for us to take stress-free trips and get to trek in nature, which we aren’t able to do in our busy schedules for the entire year. Last year I visited my grandparents and stayed with them for 20 days. The best thing about the summer holidays is creating and discovering new things in the village. While enjoying my stay, I also learned some new things that expanded my knowledge. I spent the rest of the summer holidays playing board and video games and cooking under my mother’s supervision.

As the summer days slowly waned, a sense of nostalgia crept in. The memories and lessons from this summer vacation will continue to shape my journey as I return to the world of academics with renewed vigour and a heart full of gratitude.

Essays on Summer Vacation: 400 Words Sample

Summer vacation, that much-awaited break from the mundane routines of school and study, is a time of rejuvenation, exploration, and personal growth. It offers the perfect opportunity to unwind, reflect, and create lasting memories.

A Journey of Self-Introspection

During this past summer vacation, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. The journey began with a sense of anticipation and excitement, as I bid adieu to textbooks and classrooms. My destination was a coastal paradise, where golden sands met the azure sea. The tranquil rhythm of the waves provided a serene backdrop for relaxation, reflection, and renewal.

The break also provided ample time for cultural exploration. I wandered through quaint streets, explored historical sites, and engaged with locals to gain insights into their way of life. Trying local cuisine became a delightful adventure in itself, as I savoured flavours that were a symphony of tradition and innovation.

Amidst exploration, I found time to reconnect with my family. Shared laughter, deep conversations, and moments of camaraderie became the heart of the vacation. We hiked through lush trails, picnicked in meadows, and watched sunsets that painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. These experiences solidified the bonds that make family the cornerstone of our lives.

Beyond leisure, the vacation allowed for personal growth. I pursued hobbies I had set aside during the academic year, from painting to playing musical instruments. I also volunteered with a local community organization, an experience that not only gave me a sense of purpose but also introduced me to remarkable individuals and stories.

As the vacation drew to a close, a sense of nostalgia settled in. The days had flown by, leaving behind memories etched in the sands of time. The journey, both physical and introspective, had transformed me. I returned with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the world, the importance of relationships, and the significance of taking breaks to recharge.

In Conclusion

A summer vacation is more than just a break from school; it’s a transformative experience that encompasses relaxation, exploration, and growth. It’s a canvas upon which we paint our memories, our passions, and our connections. As I stepped back into the world of academics, I carried with me the lessons and experiences of this summer, poised to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Describe the best holiday you have had, describe the best holiday/vacation you have had..

  • where you went
  • what this place was like
  • what you did

and explain why it was the best holiday/vacation you have had. [You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer 1: My family went to Kuwait last summer to spend a vacation and I was with them during this wonderful vacation. It is one of the most memorable experiences for me so far. During this trip, we went to a beach named Messilah and enjoyed ourselves a lot. This is a great topic and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to let me talk about it. Kuwait is a beautiful country but I did not have the chance to visit it until last year. We stayed in a four-star hotel near Messilah beach which offered us a fabulous view. Messilah is one of the biggest and grandest beaches in the entire country and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The beach is filled with white sands where we often walked for an hour or two along the seashore to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The deep blue seawater was a beautiful sight to look at during the day time, and at night it reflected the moonlight -that made the place heavenly. Our experience was amazing, to say the least.

This was a great place to be with my family and I really liked the fact that everybody enjoyed being there. Besides, there was a swimming pool just for junior members who were unable to swim on the beach. During our visit to Kuwait, I mostly spent my time near the beach. In fact, my parents went to visit the city and did some shopping, but I avoided doing shopping by all means. I preferred to take part in different water sports and took some boat trips on the sea as well. I tried to dive under the sea but later discarded the idea as I was not an expert swimmer

Model Answer 2: This is a great topic to talk about, and thank you for it. Last summer, I probably had the best holiday of my life when I went to Tenerife in Spain with my family. I had the biggest splash of my life there. We stayed at Tenerife in Spain for two weeks and had lots of fun activities, including trying local foods, visiting different places, and enjoying night parties. I will remember these days for a long time. Moreover, the natural views were so charming that I had a hard time believing that they were real. Considering everything, this was the best holiday I have ever spent out of my country and I still feel lucky for that. Tenerife Island is the largest of the Canary Islands in Spain. It also has some special locations that are breathtakingly beautiful. The exotic beaches were the other attractive places that drag thousands of visitors each week. The high-end restaurants and their special dishes also play an important role to make it a favourite tourists spot. I did lots of things there. Spending an entire night on the beach was a special experience for me. I had the desire to participate in the Carnaval de Santa Cruz but missed that as the event was set to be held at a later date. Spending a night under the starry sky and listening to the sea waves thrilled me to the fullest extent possible. It was an out of the world experience for me. Walking through the boulevards, visiting the National Park, bating on the sea – all of them had been special to me. This was the best holiday experience for me so far as I did spend some of the best days of my life there. I enjoyed the beautiful natural sceneries, wondered about the vastness of the sea, ate exotic seafood and experienced a very unique European lifestyle that I was not accustomed to. This was an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Idea generation for this Cue Card topic:

"Describe the best holiday/vacation you have had"  People go on to enjoy holidays to get away from the routined life, feel relaxed and get back refreshed. People travel to different parts of the world to have some of the wonderful holidays they dream about. Some other hints would be applicable in answering this particular cue card task. Here they go. 1. Travelling is my favourite hobby and a passion I cherish. Recently I went to Cape Sounion in Greece to enjoy my holidays. I heard about the place from a friend and I was captivated after visiting the place. The location was surrounded by seas on three sides. I enjoyed the sunset scenes to a great extent. It was the best holiday of my life so far. 2. My wife wanted to visit Nepal last year for the Christmas holidays. Accordingly, we went there and visited all the noted places including Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Temple, Poon Hill, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Pashupati Nath, 55 Window Palace, Kathmandu Durbar Square and more. This is the most memorable tour that we have ever taken since we enjoyed our days to the fullest. 3. Qatar offers some amazing destinations to its visitors. I went on a holiday in this beautiful country last year, and it was one of the best tours that I have had so far. I have visited some of the most notable places there and was deeply impressed with the enchantments of these places. The museums, food courts and beach walks were the greatest of them.

4. The old towns and resorts in Romania are highly recommended for American tourists. I never thought that I would enjoy a distant part of the world, especially an old town so much. Staying at a local resort was an unforgettable experience for me. I explored some of the most secluded parts of the country during this holiday. I must say loved this trip.

5. I am a passionate traveller and whenever I get a good chance, I set out for some trips. It was not an exception when my office allowed me a five-days leave last summer. I made a tour and went to different parts of India, and mostly it was a rail journey. Two of my friends accompanied me and we explored some notable places in India by train. It was a nice holiday indeed. 6. My last holiday in Las Vegas was excellent, in fact, one of the best. I did not know that this is a small resort town and it offered so much fun. Everything amazed me inside this city, and particularly I enjoyed the musical fountain. The star-rated hotels and restaurants gave their best service which I will remember for a long time. 7. As a student of archaeology, I was excited to get a chance to visit different archaeological sites in Egypt. I loved the large pyramids and other past relics. It was so amazing an experience that I will never forget this tour.

The Best Vacation Ever

Filed Under: Essays Tagged With: Experience , School

Whenever people think about their best vacation ever, a school trip isn’t the first thing that comes to their train of thought. However, as long as you have a great destination, amazing friends and memories, and an exciting time returning home then anything or place can be the best vacation ever. The best vacation ever happened last year during high school. I was a member of the Texas High robotics club, The T-Bots. Every year the team goes to competitions to challenge other schools or organizations robots. The competition was in the Big Easy, New Orleans! When the day finally came to take the trip, my excitement could be felt from across the entire galaxy. I was born in New Orleans, so to be returning to my birthplace after 17 years was very nostalgic. A couple of years ago the T-Bots went to New Orleans before I joined, and they mentioned that all the wonderful sites and restaurants were utterly astonishing! Finally the trip was underway with the best friends a guy can ask for. This long drive to New Orleans is the milestone of my friendship with the T-Bots. A very strong bond was created that day which will never be broken because each one of us had something in common, yet we were complete opposites.

We shared hilarious and charming stories with each other. The trip became even more interesting once we let out our inner “nerdiness.” Superheroes, video games, movies and anime were the main topics we jabbered about on the 8 hour drive. It was just heartwarming to me how well a group of people can get along with each other (even with the pointless, comical arguments we had about superheroes and anime).

Once we made it to New Orleans, the team and I went out to eat at a magnificent pizzeria. The pizzas were sizzling hot but extremely delicious. The entire team shared the pizzas along with helping pay for the food. That is how every night went that week in New Orleans. After every competition, we would go out into the town and have a blast! I got to take pictures of autographed jerseys of players of the New Orleans Saints and even eat an oyster! Bowling night was one of the best parts of the vacation. We challenged each other on our last game of the night on who can get the best strike.

I had the best strike of all! All my friends cheered me on once it happened. It was the best week ever! Following days of competition, fun activities with the team, and eating great Cajun style foods, it was time to head home. It was around 8pm when we left, so everyone was pretty tired. None of us wanted to leave New Orleans though considering how much fun we had there. A couple hours passed and the bus wasn’t even halfway home. All of a sudden there was a loud hissing sound. The bus has a flat tire in the middle of nowhere! It would seem as if this incident was the worst part of the vacation, but in fact it was one of the best things to happen that week.

During the almost 3 hour wait, my friends and I took the time to watch movies that we brought along to pass the time. We bonded even more that night. It took a while but the tire was finally fixed and we were underway yet again. At last, we reached Texarkana! It was 6am and everyone was absolutely exhausted. It was all worth it though because we made the trip worthwhile. The trip to New Orleans was a marvelous experience to me personally. It felt like home to me. Vacation or not, the trip wouldn’t have been as good if I didn’t have anybody to enjoy the experience with. Anything or any place on the Earth can be the best vacation ever if you just have a great destination to reach, loving friends and pleasurable memories, and the best time of your life returning home.

Narrative Essay: My Favorite Summer Vacation

the best vacation ever essay

Each summer is beautiful for me because I spend it with my family. I am well aware that people my age spend their summer vacations with friends, partying all the time. But, after an entire year away from my family, I must admit I would always choose to spend a summer vacation with my family rather than friends. After all, my friends are what I get back to when the vacation time ends.

If someone asks me to choose one perfect vacation that is better than all the rest, I’d have to choose my trip to the Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes, Washington. The place was perfect for a modern camper – combining an Airstream trailer rental, canvas tent and log cabins, and surrounded by three marvelous lakes.

But, this is not my favorite summer vacation just because of the location. We have visited so many wonderful places during the summers, I am pretty sure some even looked better. What I do remember is the fun.

This is probably because of the three lakes, but the choices we had for activities were so many, we couldn’t possibly do everything before we went back home. I remember how much we fought over what we are going to do. My father wants us to do group activities when we go on summer vacation because ‘’It wouldn’t be a family vacation if we don’t stick together’’.

So, if you came and watched us on our family vacations in the summer, you would see two very bored parents just sitting next to their children when they are doing some kid activities. You could also see us trout fishing with them because my dad loves fishing.

This year that I am talking about, we fought for a long time about the trout fishing activity. We wanted to do canoeing, so we agreed that they will come with us on his, and we would go fishing with them. As it turned out, we had more fun on the fishing expedition than we had canoeing. For our dad, it was the opposite.

We fell in the water because this was our first time canoeing and we had no idea what we were doing. Both my sister and I were soaking wet because we fell exactly eleven times. Since my dad has done this in the past, they had a blast!

When the time came to go fishing, we were devastated by the idea that we’d have to spend an entire day looking for trout when there were so many things we could do. I honestly preferred just sitting near the fire pit on a picnic table all day, rather than waiting for a trout to catch my father’s bait.

However, luck was on my side that day. Fishing turned out to be such a fun activity, I am now convincing my dad to do it every summer. My dad was not so lucky. He spent over five hours just waiting and waiting, got sunburned and therefore had a fever all night. After a couple of hours of no fish caught whatsoever, he kept moving towards me in the hope that he will get lucky, too. But, the fish just seemed to run away from him and catch on my fishing rod instead.

The next day we decided to be a little less active since my father already had a tough night with the fever and the stress. We stayed near the cabin and joined those organized activities like cooking on a campfire and making tie-dyed shirts. We didn’t separate for even an hour and had the times of our lives.

This was way before I left home to go study in another city. For a family who cannot stand each other and fights all the time at home, it was a miracle how well we agreed and how fun our summer vacation was. Every summer we spend together is like this now, but now it is not such a strange thing. After over half a year of being separated and not living together, we would be happy if someone put us in one room for an entire month. That year, this was the strangest and most unexpected twist.

I will always remember that summer with my family. I don’t think I’ll be forgetting about the other places and vacations, too, but this is the summer when I understood that there is nothing more important than family. Whenever a friend jokes about my summer vacationing when I tell them I won’t be joining them this year too, I just remember that summer and everything seems right.

I don’t think I’ll ever envy my friends for spending their vacation partying. I will pity them for being away from their family once again because holidays and vacations are best spent with the people you love most. What I do know at this point is that when I have my own family, I will take them to that same spot and set the same rules as my father. I hope my fishing experience will be terrible as his, and they will fall in love with it.

A laid-back family vacation? Here are the 7 best US islands for fun-filled escapes

I sland travel holds a lot of appeal for families. Maybe it's the gorgeous ocean views and pristine beaches that lure us to the most idyllic U.S. islands. Maybe it's the laid-back coastal vibes that make them such a great family vacation idea . I have many fond memories of visiting Martha’s Vineyard, Amelia Island and Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island as a child. For my own little one, there’s something especially magical about taking a ferry to reach our destination.

Of course, not all island vacations in the U.S. need to be accessible by ferry to be charming, but the country's best islands for family vacations are typically surrounded by large bodies of water, which makes them feel remote and removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If you're dreaming of a passport-free island vacation with the kids, these are the U.S. islands that have a special appeal to families.

SUN AND SAND: 12 best beach resorts in the U.S. for families

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. Whidbey Island, Washington

Just north of Seattle and easily accessible by ferry, Washington's Whidbey Island is one of the longest islands in the United States, stretching about 40 miles. Though there are several scenic towns on this island, my family's favorites are Langley and Coupeville, both of which offer easy access to kid-friendly activities like hiking, water sports, or a simple day at the beach.

AT THE WATER'S EDGE: 16 best lake resorts and hotels in the U.S. for families

In Langley, stay at the spacious Langley by the Sea rental home for spectacular waterfront views, a fenced backyard, a state-of-the-art kitchen for home-cooked meals, and a large family room perfect for reconnecting with the kids over a classic board game . A quick five-minute drive away, downtown Langley bustles with lively shops and eateries. Stop by Sea Biscuit Bakery for a grab-and-go breakfast and select from one of many house-made pastries and hot breakfast sandwiches. Family-friendly Penn Cove Brewing serves up tacos, sandwiches, and salads. Ultra House offers ramen and Asian fusion with a twist and offers a kids menu.

The town of Coupeville is best known as the film location of the 1998 movie classic "Practical Magic," starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. It’s also a hidden gem for families looking to explore the coast of this fabulous U.S. island vacation destination. Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve sits along Puget Sound with more than 30 miles of hiking trails for all skill levels. Stroll along the beach looking for seashells and sea glass, or bring a picnic to enjoy on the beach.

In Coupeville, make Harrington’s Hideaway your home base. The two-bedroom home has a bathtub for those traveling with small kids, in addition to private beach access and a fenced yard where kids can play. Dinner options are aplenty in this little coastal town. Molka Xete serves excellent casual Mexican food, while Gordon’s Fusion dishes out eclectic flavors including jambalaya, carne asada and vegan burgers. Fare Market has a great selection of takeout items on its menu.

FAMILY FUN: 7 charming coastal towns in the U.S. that are perfect for a family vacation

There are plenty of family-friendly activities on the water in Whidbey Island. For families with young kids, I recommend a Family Fun Loop Kayak Tour (ages six and up) with Whidbey Island Kayaking . The 90-minute family tour offers ample opportunities to spot wildlife. Get even further out onto the water on an open deck boat with the one-hour Deception Pass Wildlife Tour , where you can expect to see bald eagles, seals and possibly a whale. For a thrilling land-based adventure, zip-line through an Old Growth forest with Canopy Tours NW .

2. Amelia Island, Florida

Situated off the Sunshine State's northern coast, Amelia Island is one of the most romantic getaways in Florida for couples , but it's also an especially great island for families. The island's most family-friendly amenities can be found at Omni Amelia Island Resort , which has a splash pool, a family pool and daily activities such as pickleball, a tennis clinic, and arts and crafts. This popular resort also has plenty of kid-friendly dining options, including both casual and fine-dining restaurants, which makes it a great option for tired parents after a long day of fun in the sun. Larger families might consider one of the many vacation rental options on the island as well.

SUNSHINE STATE: 10 dreamy Florida beach resorts for families

Lounging on one of Florida's best family beaches is a great way to spend the day. Parents and kids can build sandcastles, go for a swim, or rent a paddleboard or float. But Amelia Island has an adventurous side, too. You can book a river cruise and ecotour to learn more about the wildlife on Cumberland Island, just north of Amelia − don't be surprised if you spot a dolphin or wild horses during your tour. Visit the Historic District on Centre Street for art galleries, vintage shops, and the family-owned Villa Villekulla Toys toy store.

3. Fripp Island, South Carolina

At the southern tip of South Carolina, Fripp Island is just 3,000 acres and is best known for explorers and pirates seeking treasure. Because of its remoteness, it exudes a kind of laid-back charm you can find only on the best island vacations in the U.S., but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot for families to do here.

MAKE MEMORIES: 22 best family vacation spots in the U.S.

Fripp Island Resort has family-friendly amenities along with special packages for those traveling with kids. Kids can partake in Camp Fripp , which offers educational and creative workshops that include painting, tie-dye, and learning about area wildlife. There’s a swim-in movie night along with live entertainment throughout the week. If you want to get on the water, book a kayaking tour or a pontoon cruise. The world-class golf course is great for active adults looking to get some swings in, while weekly activities for adults, kids, and families keep non-golfers busy.

Dining options on this tiny island range from delis and cafes to the High Tide Pizza Food Truck and the Big Fripp Dipper Ice Cream Truck. Nothing screams summer like a good old-fashioned ice cream cone. Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort also offers vacation rentals with a home-away-from-home feel where you'll have the convenience of a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor grill for BBQs.

4. Mackinac Island, Michigan

One of the most popular Midwest family vacations , idyllic little Mackinac Island is the quintessential U.S. island destination for active families. Visiting the thickly forested island is like traveling back in time to an era of car-free roads, horse-drawn carriages and stately Victorian homes. There are more than 70 miles of trails to explore either by bicycle or on foot, plus an adorable downtown and ample coastline for water sports. Great Turtle Kayak Tours provides lessons, tours, and rentals for kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkeling . Its most popular tour is of the underwater coastal caves.

FUN IN THE SUN: 11 best family beach vacations in the U.S.

Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel is generally considered one of the best family resorts in the U.S. , but an equally good option for families is Mission Point Resort . Mission Point's flexible kids club is available from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., allowing parents ample time to enjoy dinner and some alone time. The club has activities to keep little ones busy and serves them dinner.

The resort also has an outdoor pool, a heated swimming pool, and two hot tubs. There’s a putting course, lawn games, tennis courts, and bicycles to rent. Head to Admiral Dave’s Arcade for a variety of games and entertainment, or take a history tour of the resort and the island. Don’t miss movie nights at the historic movie theater.

5. Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine

Home to Maine's Acadia National Park and the charming seaside town of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island is the sixth-largest island in the United States. This budget-friendly family vacation destination is popular with all ages because there's a lot to do year-round, but it's especially unique among island vacations in the U.S. because it's just as much fun in the fall and winter as it is during the warmer months.

SEASIDE ESCAPES: New England vacations: 11 charming coastal towns in Maine, Massachusetts, more

It’s also an excellent family vacation spot to witness and learn about wildlife and diverse ecosystems. Visit the Oceanarium and Education Center , which showcases a 29-foot lobster boat , nine tanks featuring local marine habitat, and a large touch pool full of sea cucumbers, crabs and other underwater species.

When visiting Acadia National Park, kids can participate in the park’s Junior Ranger Program and be sworn in as Junior Ranger. Acadia Quest is another fun initiative to encourage little ones to learn about national parks and explore nature. Simply download the app, go through a series of challenges, and document your experiences on social media. The national park has a variety of hiking and walking trails suitable for different levels. From the flat Wonderland Trail that opens to tide pools to the lush Jesup Path and Hemlock Path Loop , there’s a lot of Great Outdoors to explore on this U.S. island.

Stay at the Acadia Inn in Bar Harbor, where the rooms are spacious and affordable and hotel specials include the Kid's Kampout package, which provides tiny guests with a tent, lantern, and mat for an indoor camping experience. The hotel also offers bath kits that include tear-free shampoo and rubber duckies.

6. Vashon-Maury Island, Washington

Home to fewer than 11,000 full-time residents, Vashon-Maury Island is actually two islands in the Puget Sound connected by an isthmus built by homeowners in 1913. Make Vashon Inn your home base while visiting this U.S. island destination. Its four nicely appointed suites are roomy, comfortable, and set up like a private home or apartment with a kitchen, dining area, and living area. Larger families needing more space can rent two separate suites right next to each other.

UNUSUAL OVERNIGHTS: 13 best lighthouse hotels where you can spend the night

I also recommend Vashon Inn because it's just a three-minute walk to the island's sweet downtown, where you’ll find a delicious bakery , tons of restaurants , and cute shops selling local crafts. You can arrange for a horseback riding excursion that weaves through trails in an old growth forest, or take the kids on a morning hike to burn off some energy. There are many easy trails to explore. One of my family's favorites is the Judd Creek Trail , an easy 1-mile loop. Kayak and e-bike rentals are available on the island from Vashon Adventures , which offers tours and classes suitable for all ages.

If you’re interested in UFOs, visit the site of a purported UFO landing (commonly referred to as the Maury Island Incident) at the Vashon Municipal Airport. For something more terrestrial, plan a relaxing day looking for sand dollars and seashells at the beach. Visit a local llama farm (by appointment only) for a unique island vacation experience.

The variety of dining choices also make Vashon one of the best islands in the U.S. for families. In addition to a fleet of food trucks, you can't go wrong with Pure Organic Kitchen and Juicery for its speedy service and fresh ingredients. Vashon Pizza has an amazing Helena Greek pizza. Extra hungry? Go for the cheese bread with all the dipping sauces. And you'll regret it if you miss Glass Bottle Creamery , which makes some of the best ice cream in the world (I'm not exaggerating). The creamery sources its eggs, cream and milk from local farmers. Dairy-free and vegan options are also available.

7. Maui, Hawaii

You can't talk about the best islands in the U.S. without mentioning the Hawaiian Islands . They're all wonderful to visit, but Maui is my pick for families yearning for an unforgettable tropical escape with a well-earned reputation for kid-friendly activities and abundant natural beauty. From the moment you set foot off the plane, perpetual sunshine and sprawling mountains greet you.

HASSLE-FREE HAWAII: 10 best family resorts in Hawaii

Make the Grand Wailea your family's base camp on this island adventure. The 40-acre property has spectacular ocean views, spacious rooms and a memorable luau suitable for children of all ages to go along with its nine pools, 2,000-foot lazy river with waterslides, tennis courts, beachfront access and daily kids activities. Enroll the little ones in the Grand Passport Program , which is a guide that helps them navigate all the resort's fun offerings.

Explore the island via a Hele Wai Eco Reserve or hiking tour through the hotel’s concierge. These off-site tours offer families a kid-friendly exploration of Maui’s local flora and fauna, and opportunities for spotting wildlife. Or, rent a car and get out into the real Maui, exploring the island's scenic roads (you'll often see whales breaching off the coast), driving to the top of the towering Haleakala volcano, or taking in popular attractions such as the Maui Ocean Center and Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
