ORA ( Oxford University Research Archive ) is the institutional repository for the University of Oxford. ORA was established in 2007 as a permanent and secure online archive of research materials produced by members of the University of Oxford.

ORA aims to provide access to the full text of as much of Oxford's academic research as possible. This includes articles, conference papers, theses, research data, working papers, posters and other content types .

Making materials open access removes barriers that restrict access to research, allowing for free dissemination of full text content, available to anyone with Internet access. ORA promotes and encourages the sharing of the scholarly output produced by the members of the University of Oxford that have been published under open access conditions, whilst additionally supporting University compliance with research funder policy and assessment.

More information regarding open access at the University of Oxford can be found on the Open Access Oxford website .

Benefits of the ORA Service

ORA actively makes details of its content available to services such as the Bodleian Libraries catalogue - SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online) , the British Library's EThOS service , Google , and Google Scholar , with the intent to maximise visibility of information regarding publications at Oxford with the widest possible audience. ORA offers an API (Application Programming Interface) in which other services can engage with content.

Benefits to the members of the University of Oxford include:

  • Free sharing of knowledge to the academic community.
  • Promoted engagement with the work — it is more easily accessible and therefore more likely to be read and cited.
  • ORA makes notoriously elusive items such as some conference papers and posters, unpublished works and out of print items easy to obtain.
  • It publicises the scholarly work and research of the University of Oxford and its members.
  • Provides preservation and back-up of materials in the archive.

The full text and abstracts of many items within the archive can be downloaded free of charge without restriction by anyone with an Internet connection. New full texts are being added daily.

  • Policies regarding the use of content, terms and conditions and notice and take down, can be found at: https://ora.ox.ac.uk/policies .
  • Information regarding searching ORA can be found at: https://libguides.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/ora/searching-ORA .
  • Links to depositing and deposit guidance can be found at: https://ora.ox.ac.uk/deposit .
  • In collaboration with Research Services colleagues, who administer Symplectic Elements at Oxford, ORA offer a bulk ingest service to assist University of Oxford journal and series editors with depositing back catalogues of working paper series, and internally produced journals or other materials. Contact ORA to find out more.

Support and Certification

ORA aims to share metadata about its content and the research being completed at the University of Oxford as widely and as accessibly as possible. This involves meeting certain metadata standards, such as OpenAire ; repository open access technical requirements instigated by funders, such as UKRI or as part of Coalition S ; and inclusion in registries and databases.

Some of the registries and formats which ORA is proud to be supporting are listed below. More information can be found at https://ora.ox.ac.uk/api .

AI tool could help avoid fatal heart attacks

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool that can predict 10-year risk of deadly heart attacks, could transform treatment for patients who undergo CT scans to investigate chest pain, according to British Heart Foundation-funded research presented today at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia.

Our researchers work across the full range of biomedical and clinical sciences, from the molecule to large population studies. The excellence of our research is recognised by our top placing in international league tables.

This image shows a graphical abstract of the new paper from the Akerman group, and illustrates how that the thalamic input received by a layer 4 excitatory cortical neuron in mice is influenced by the neuron’s embryonic progenitor type. Neurons derived from intermediate progenitors receive greater input from higher-order thalamus, which reflects their dendritic morphology and molecular mechanisms specified by the progenitors

The most interesting thing about any technology is how it affects humans: how it makes us more or less collaborative, how it accelerates discovery and communication, or how it distracts and frustrates us. We saw this in the 1990s. As the internet became more ubiquitous, researchers began experimenting with collaborative writing tools that allowed multiple authors to work on a single document simultaneously, regardless of their physical locations. Some of the earliest examples were the Collaboratories launched by researchers in the mid-1990s at the University of Michigan. These platforms enabled real-time co-authoring, annotation, and discussion, streamlining the research process and fostering international collaborations that would have been unimaginable just a few years earlier.

Most people, but not all, would agree that the internet has benefitted research and researchers’ working lives. But can we be so sure about the role of new technologies today, and, most immediately, generative AI?

Anyone with a stake in research—researchers, societies, and publishers, to name a few—should be considering an AI-enabled future and their role in it. As the largest not-for-profit research publisher, OUP is beginning to define the principles on which we are engaging with companies creating Large Language Models (LLMs). I wrote about this more extensively in the Times Higher Education , but important considerations for us include: a respect for intellectual property, understanding the importance of technology to support pedagogy and research, appropriate compensation and routes to attribution for authors, and robust escalation routes with developers to address errors or problems.

Ultimately, we want to understand what researchers consider important in the decision to engage with generative AI—what excites or concerns them, how they are using or imagining using AI tools, and the role they believe publishers (among other institutional stakeholders) can play in supporting and protecting their published research.

We recently carried out a global survey of researchers to explore how they felt about all aspects of AI—we heard from thousands of researchers across geographies, disciplines, and career stages. The results are revealing in many important ways, and we will be sharing these findings in more detail soon, but the point that struck me immediately was that many researchers are looking for guidance from their institutions, their scholarly societies, and publishers on how to make best use of AI.

Publishers like OUP are uniquely positioned to advocate for the protection of researchers and their research within LLMs. And we are beginning to do so in important ways, because Gen AI and LLM providers want unbiased, high-quality scholarly data to train their models, and the most responsible providers appreciate that seeking permission (and paying for that) is the most sustainable way of building models that will beat the competition. LLMs are not being built with the intention of replacing researchers, and nor should they be. However, such tools should benefit from using high quality scholarly literature, in addition to much of what sits on the public web. And since the Press, and other publishers, will use Gen AI technologies to make its own products and services better and more usable, we want LLMs to be as neutral and unbiased as possible.

As we enter discussions with LLM providers, we have important considerations to guide us. For example, we’d need assurances that there will be no intended verbatim reproduction rights or citation in connection with display (this includes not surfacing the content itself); that the content would not be used for the creation of substantially similar content, including reverse engineering; and that no services or products would be created for the sole purpose of creating original scholarship. The central theme guiding all of these discussions and potential agreements is to protect research authors against plagiarism in any of its forms.

We know this is a difficult challenge, particularly given how much research content has already been ingested into LLMs by users engaging with these conversational AI tools. But publishers like OUP are well positioned to take this on, and I believe we can make a difference as these tools evolve. And by taking this approach, we hope to ensure that researchers can either begin or continue to make use of the best of AI tools to improve their research outcomes.

The changing face of research support

Stephen conway, executive director of research services, outlines the activities across the university to support oxford’s researchers and their research in an increasingly complex and digital world.

Head and shoulders shot of Stephen Conway

Key points:

  • Work underway to improve our support for researchers and their research in face of increased scale, complexity and funder requirements
  • Information about our ambitions for digital research management systems and tools, and a new research ethics system and dashboard project for REF 2029
  • Supporting Oxford’s researchers and their research through Digital Transformation and Professional Services Together

Oxford is widely known for its world-leading research and the profound impact that the work of our outstanding researchers has across the globe. It’s a defining characteristic of the University, and core to our academic mission – and one that we’re proud to support in Research Services.

Protecting that research excellence and helping our researchers succeed requires continued creativity and innovation in our ways of working – particularly as the scale and complexity of our research portfolio increases, we move through a digital transformation at Oxford, and we navigate the changing external environment.

Findings from the Research Finance Management (Post Award) Service Review

A critically important piece of recent work has been a service review of how we support the financial management of research funding. Oxford's annual research income is now over £200m more than any other UK university and this in-depth review considered ways to respond to the growing scale, complexity and diversity of our external funding.

The review identified nine priority actions. These are focused on improving planning and coordination across the University; addressing workforce pinch points; seizing new technology opportunities; using digital tools and automation to streamline processes; and improving guidance and support resources for researchers and research support staff.

The Service Review was part of Professional Services Together , working with colleagues across Oxford and with the expert support of the Focus team. It was informed by researchers and professional services staff, as well as benchmarking and best practice at other institutions. The full report is available on the Focus webpages, we look forward to working with you on the implementation.

Improving digital experiences

One of the most important pieces of work underway is focused on improving how we manage research projects across their full lifecycle. To support this, we are transforming our systems and tools for preparing and costing funding applications, managing and reporting on awards, handling research contract negotiations, and supporting research governance and assurance activities.

We want end-to-end systems that are researcher-centred, better promote transparency of tasks and workflow between researchers, departments and central teams, improve process efficiency and allow us to reuse research management data wherever possible.

We are progressing well understanding our requirements for upgraded systems, reviewing potential suppliers and finding out about the experience of other research-intensive UK institutions – and plan to seek input on a recommended solution in autumn 2024.

A new research ethics application system

As a first step in moving to this joined up digital environment, we are implementing Worktribe Ethics as a new online system to manage the preparation, submission, review and approval of research ethics applications. This will replace the current offline and email-based process.

The University’s Department of Education and its ethics committee will shortly begin testing the new system. Subject to a successful pilot, we will test and roll the system out to other departments, divisions and ethics committees across the University over the rest of 2024.

REF preparation: creation of dashboards

While the timing of the next Research Excellence Framework (REF) may have slipped to 2029, we want to make sure that, as an institution, our research leaders are able to access reliable and comprehensive information on research quality and research activities to support their modelling and strategic decision-making, including in preparation for REF 2029.

The Research Strategy and Policy Unit in Research Services is leading on the development of dashboards for use at departmental, divisional and central University levels. This includes topics such as research income data; researcher career development; and volumes, value, trend and distribution by department, research and funders.

This is a complex project, needing us to combine data, analysed across multiple dimensions, from many different systems – Symplectic, ORA, Oracle Financials, the PeopleXD HR system, CoSy training records and more.

The first stages involve us assessing whether data is available, and assessing its quality and how well it can work across different systems. We will then take action to address any gaps. We are hugely grateful for the support of colleagues in these areas for their continued support in this work.

Find out more and get involved

This is a small snapshot of activity that is underway to support the research community, which I believe will significantly improve the quality, efficiency and usability of the services we offer.

If you’d like to get involved in individual projects, details will be shared through the Research Services (RS) newsletter and the Research and Innovation Support Network (RISN) in due course.

For more detail of the wider research component of the Digital Transformation programme, please refer to the website.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Internet use statistically associated with higher wellbeing, finds new global Oxford study

Internet use statistically associated with higher wellbeing, finds new global Oxford study

Links between internet adoption and wellbeing are likely to be positive, despite popular concerns to the contrary, according to a major new international study from researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute, part of the University of Oxford.

The study encompassed more than two million participants psychological wellbeing from 2006-2021 across 168 countries, in relation to internet use and psychological well-being across 33,792 different statistical models and subsets of data, 84.9% of associations between internet connectivity and wellbeing were positive and statistically significant.

The study analysed data from two million individuals aged 15 to 99 in 168 countries, including Latin America, Asia, and Africa and found internet access and use was consistently associated with positive wellbeing.

Assistant Professor Matti Vuorre, Tilburg University and Research Associate, Oxford Internet Institute and Professor Andrew Przybylski, Oxford Internet Institute carried out the study to assess how technology relates to wellbeing in parts of the world that are rarely studied.

Professor Przybylski said: 'Whilst internet technologies and platforms and their potential psychological consequences remain debated, research to date has been inconclusive and of limited geographic and demographic scope. The overwhelming majority of studies have focused on the Global North and younger people thereby ignoring the fact that the penetration of the internet has been, and continues to be, a global phenomenon'.

'We set out to address this gap by analysing how internet access, mobile internet access and active internet use might predict psychological wellbeing on a global level across the life stages. To our knowledge, no other research has directly grappled with these issues and addressed the worldwide scope of the debate.'

The researchers studied eight indicators of well-being: life satisfaction, daily negative and positive experiences, two indices of social well-being, physical wellbeing, community wellbeing and experiences of purpose.

Commenting on the findings, Professor Vuorre said, “We were surprised to find a positive correlation between well-being and internet use across the majority of the thousands of models we used for our analysis.”

Whilst the associations between internet access and use for the average country was very consistently positive, the researchers did find some variation by gender and wellbeing indicators: The researchers found that 4.9% of associations linking internet use and community well-being were negative, with most of those observed among young women aged 15-24yrs.

Whilst not identified by the researchers as a causal relation, the paper notes that this specific finding is consistent with previous reports of increased cyberbullying and more negative associations between social media use and depressive symptoms among young women.

Adds Przybylski, 'Overall we found that average associations were consistent across internet adoption predictors and wellbeing outcomes, with those who had access to or actively used the internet reporting meaningfully greater wellbeing than those who did not'.

'We hope our findings bring some greater context to the screentime debate however further work is still needed in this important area.  We urge platform providers to share their detailed data on user behaviour with social scientists working in this field for transparent and independent scientific enquiry, to enable a more comprehensive understanding of internet technologies in our daily lives.'

In the study, the researchers examined data from the Gallup World Poll, from 2,414,294 individuals from 168 countries, from 2006-2021.  The poll assessed well-being with face-to-face and phone surveys by local interviewers in the respondents’ native languages.  The researchers applied statistical modelling techniques to the data using wellbeing indicators to test the association between internet adoption and wellbeing outcomes.

Watch the  American Psychological Association (APA) video  highlighting the key findings from the research.
