PHD Student

A doctorate often follows a Master’s degree or a State Exam for those who wish to pursue a career in academia or research (Dr. rer. nat.).

We are conducting innovative and interdisciplinary research projects enabling a comprehensive view on food safety along the entire chain of production. Generally, research projects can cover fundamental research or applied sciences and are not limited to graduates form the University of Hamburg.

A doctorate in natural sciences can take 3 to 4 years to complete. A substantial part of the doctorate is the individual research on the respective PhD topic. The final exam is the dissertation (written doctoral research work) followed by an oral doctorate defense (disputation).

Over the last few decades, computer hardware has become smaller and smaller, but their technology remains more or less the same. Slowly, this development is reaching its limits. Thus, we need new technologies that satisfy our growing hunger for even more powerful hardware.

Quantum physics could be a solution.

Together with the University of Cologne and the RWTH Aachen, Bonn researchers want to work on making this new technology usable. To achieve this, quantum bits or even qubits - the quantum counterpart to our previous bits - quantum communication channels that build networks and error correction methods have to be explored from the ground up. As part of the Excellence Initiative, the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy (BCGS) offers a doctoral program with an integrated honors program.

PhD-student in Data-Driven Precision Nutrition

phd in nutrition germany

Job Information

Offer description.

At the Department of Life Sciences (LIFE), we conduct research, innovation and education to enable a biobased society and improve human health. Our topics cover both basic and applied aspects of life sciences in the areas of systems biology, chemical biology, industrial biology and biotechnology and, food and nutrition science. We develop and apply cutting edge experimental and computational technologies. Our researchers are discovering how biomolecules, living cells and the whole organisms’ function and respond to the environment. Based on that knowledge, we engineer biological systems to produce foods, drugs and chemicals in an innovative and sustainable way. We also use this knowledge to pioneer new methods for prevention, diagnostic and treatment of human diseases, often in close collaboration with complementary competences from society, industry and academia. Our most important contribution to the society is the new generations of young scientists trained to be future leaders. Altogether, our department is a home to life sciences, where innovative ideas and creative people grow. Information about the division The division of Food and Nutrition Science (FNS) is one of four research divisions at LIFE. FNS addresses major societal challenges related to foods, sustainability and health. We conduct fundamental and applied research, innovation, education and dissemination in food and nutrition science with the aim to provide new knowledge and solutions that pave the way for a sustainable planet and healthy humans. Research topics span from food chemistry and technology to molecular- and data- driven nutrition. In Food Science, we focus primarily on marine and plant-based food systems with the goal to promote high food quality, minimize losses throughout the value chain and to utilise alternative sources for production of nutrient. In nutrition, we focus on human observational and intervention studies as well as cell-based model studies and apply advanced data-driven approaches and state of the art biochemical- and OMICs technologies to understand and predict the role of foods, dietary components and dietary patterns in human health.

About the position The current position is one out of 10 positions announced in Data-Driven Precision Nutrition in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) project NUTRIOME. The NUTRIOME network involves academic partners at nine European academic institutions and six associated partners from industry across Norway, Poland, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. The purpose of the NUTRIOME network is to train 10 PhDs in data-driven precision nutrition through human intervention studies, omics-technologies and advanced data analyses, in order to evaluate personal responses to foods and diets. NUTRIOME combines excellence in science with high societal relevance by engaging policy makers in the training programme to explore their plans for best route of personalised nutrition delivery in Europe. NUTRIOME will apply a dual training strategy for the 10 PhDs:

  • Use available dietary interventions and omics data: The PhDs will learn how to manage, share and utilize open data, many of which are derived from available high-quality dietary intervention projects of NUTRIOME partners. This creates added value, since these studies are time-consuming and costly to perform and are on their own often small and underpowered for identification of responders/non-responders. In this way, the PhDs will learn to harmonize and integrate different type of data and subsequently handle large-scale data, make extra sense of them and realize the challenges and limitations.
  • Perform a proof-of-concept precision nutrition meal intervention study: The NUTRIOME intervention study will be performed at three dedicated centres and via secondments, all 10 PhDs will be able to participate in the data collection phase and in the data analysis phase. In addition to its scientific value, this study will constitute a hands-on international joint training project, which will expose the PhDs to all elements of conducting forefront multi-disciplinary research at the intersection of nutrition and food science, medicine, omics technologies and data science.

During the project the PhD will perform three secondments to an industry partner and research institute/university, each of two months duration. NUTRIOME aims to recruit a balance between male and female PhDs.

The current PhD-position will be responsible for developing an algorithm for a personalised nutrition strategy based on results from the proof-of-concept study conducted by the Network and lead by Chalmers.

Qualifications

  • MSc or eqvivalent in bioscience, nutrition, bioengineering, medical science, data-science or likewise.
  • Must not have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment
  • Can be of any nationality
  • Should be enrolled in a doctoral programme during the project
  • Should comply with the mobility rules: in general, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.

Meritorious : Documented experience from human trials.

Documented expereinces from data analysis of OMICs data. To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses. Contract terms Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years. For more information about what offer and the application procedure, please visit Chalmers Webpage. The program concludes with an oral defense.

The thematic focus of the doctoral program is based on the health-relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The topics we wish to address include communicable and non-communicable diseases, the prevention and control of disease outbreaks, global health security, migration and health, universal health coverage, the role of climate and the environment as determinants of health, One Health, governance and health policy, health economics, community engagement as well as digitalization in healthcare. The doctoral program approaches research topics from an interdisciplinary perspective and incorporates a variety of methodological and conceptual approaches. Through the close exchange between teachers, supervisors and doctoral students, we support the critical examination of institutional and political constellations in the field of global health.

Modes of Study

The PhD Global Health seeks to develop expertise around the globe. We hope to provide prospective students with modes of participation that match their needs and their lifestyles, regardless of where they are from. You can chose to relocate to Berlin for the program or you can stay in your home country and travel to Berlin to participate in coursework and for temporary research stays.

Program Director

Diane L. McKay

Diane L. McKay

Assistant professor, developing healthy communities.

The relationship between diet, physical activity and health is well researched, documented, and broadly disseminated to the public. Despite this extensive evidence and vast knowledge, the obesity epidemic continues to grow in all segments of society; and the impact can be felt through increased chronic disease, poor quality of life, early death, and the amplified burden on society as a whole stemming from ever swelling healthcare costs. It takes more than just awareness to instigate significant change.

Nutrition for Industry Professionals and Entrepreneurs

In this program, you will gain insight into the nutrition-related product development process – from generating ideas to messaging to marketing. This program is ideal for entrepreneurs and professionals engaged in a variety of consumer product and food ingredient sectors who need to navigate the development, regulation, and marketing of nutrition-related products and services.

How do you create a new product or service that addresses a consumer problem, need, or gap?  And when an idea is developed, how do you guide it through the maze of nutrition-related regulations and label guidelines, and finally bring it to market?

Consumers worldwide are increasingly concerned about health and wellness, and shifting their focus towards the role of diet in achieving a healthy lifestyle.  As a result, food industry professionals and entrepreneurs like you are increasingly challenged to create, develop, and promote healthy products that meet consumer demands, while understanding and adhering to regulations related to nutrition and ingredient labeling.

Upon completion of each course, students will earn graduate academic credit, which may be applied towards a degree program. Nutrition Science for Communications Professionals

This program will provide communications experts like you with an understanding of the concepts and language of nutrition science, the skills required to interpret nutrition-related research studies for consumers, and the ability to apply this knowledge to help inform and guide marketing efforts.

Television, magazines, and the internet are the primary sources of nutrition information for the general public. Communications professionals, such as journalists, freelancers, marketing, corporate and public relations professionalsare often responsible for generating this information.

While inaccurate messages confuse and mislead, breed skepticism and harm reputations, truthful and accurate messages can turn you into a trusted nutrition educator. You will be a resource for consumers seeking to make positive lifestyle choices and for clients wanting to attain their business goals.

Nutrition Science for Health Professionals

We offer a graduate certificate program where health professionals like you can acquire knowledge about nutrition science along with the skills needed to translate this knowledge into plans for disease prevention and treatment. This program has been designed by physicians and nutritionists who specialize in clinical nutrition and will provide the fundamentals of nutrition science in a manner that will be accessible and valuable to those engaged in the healthcare professions.

Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems

This program is ideal for professionals like you engaged in a variety of food-related businesses and organizations, as well as others interested in implementing sustainable practices for their organizations, partners, and communities.

The many facets of the food system—from farms, to supply chain businesses, to consumers—feed the global population. In doing so, the food system uses a large share of financial capital and, especially, human and natural resources. Recent increases in consumption, which are likely to continue as populations grow and diets change, are the primary drivers of the use of global resources. It is critical to understand the broad impacts of the food system to create effective policy and market solutions.
