McGill University Admission Sample Essay: 256 Steps

McGill University Application Sample Essay on A Significant Experience

"256 Steps" by Juliette Mandel

It's 256 steps from my front door to my front door; a journey I make every other day that sparks reveries of reminiscing over the days when my parents were one. So close are the two houses that shelter me and yet so far apart are my two parents.

Twelve steps up the road, I see the crack in the pavement and I remember the first time I rode a tricycle—a hot pink contraption with a white wicker basket. My mom helped me up on to the seat while my dad adjusted the pedals. Slowly, I began to pedal, faster and faster. Soon I was riding without the security of my parents. Yet within seconds I reached a bumpy part of the road and was propelled into the air. I distinctly remember the way my parents ran towards me, together, and when they reached me… I felt safe. My mom carried me while my dad made funny jokes to hush my crying. I laughed so hard I couldn't even feel the stinging pain in my knee. All I could think about was how happy I was with my parents.

Ninety-eight steps and as I round the corner, a car comes speeding past me blasting loud music. I dive into another memory, as the voice of Evanescence transforms into the voice of Cyndi Lauper. 2350 Broadway, apartment 716, my dad and Cyndi were in the midst of a "recording session." I ran around the room, playing with my airplane wagon while my mom sat separately, busy in conversation on the telephone. Mom told me to be serious for a moment while Dad and I continued to jump up and down, mimicking a "famous rock star" for Cyndi. Something had changed. My parents stopped kissing in public. They spent less time together. My parents had always been on the same wavelength, but because I had what my grandmother called an "old soul," I sensed intuitively that they were drifting apart. I was a stranger inside my own home—I was confused: my parents no longer seemed inseparable. In fact, they seemed so far apart, I could hardly remember when they'd ever been together.

After 187 steps, I feel tired and alone. I see a couple bickering in their yard, and I can't help but sink into my past. The fighting seems all too familiar. The screaming, the slamming doors, the vulgar language all envelop me. I had to change. I had to adapt to my new situation. My parents were fighting again, the word separation floated throughout the house, drifting in and out of every room stinging my ears. I became a chameleon, morphing from one parent to the next. I celebrated Christmas with my mom, Chanukah with my dad. I ate pasta with tomato sauce with my mom and mac and cheese with my dad. DIVORCE. They decided to go to court— the question of custody made me nervous. Monday: dad. Tuesday: mom. Wednesday: dad until 9, then mom. Thursday and Friday: mom. Weekends: even more confusing. And holidays: alternate depending on even or odd year. My body split in two, mitosis rendered me into two completely different people. Two houses, two rooms, two beds, two pillows, two ME's.

237 steps, I'm almost there. It's time to think of an opening to put him in a good mood. I'm forty-five minutes late, I know. It was because Mom needed me. Think positive, what can I say to distract his attention from infuriation? How about his girlfriend, or maybe a compliment regarding the house. Hundreds of opening lines whirl around inside my head. A whirlpool of words; I try to organize my thoughts so that they flow like the words in a sweet song. Time to switch into "Dad Mode." No mentioning of Mom, no asking for money to buy shampoo or conditioner, no acting "rude," no complaining about the food served for dinner—I can do this.

256 steps, I've reached my front door and the transformation is complete. I'm ready. A five minute walk has sent me wandering through my past, zipping by the good times and the bad. I know they both love me, they just love different ME's. In only fifty-five hours and fifteen minutes, the short weekend will be over and I'll begin my journey back to my front door.

Juliette Mandel attends McGill University.

Essay Review

a short walk, a spectacular essay

One stroke of genius is all that author Juliette Mandel needed to make this essay sparkle. The walk, punctuated by the 256 steps, becomes the occasion for reminiscing about her life. Each new milestone, marked by a specific number of steps, brings her back to the fact that she is walking between her parents' homes. Brilliant. Of course, the other part of the equation is that she poignantly renders the conflict, pain, and disorientation that come with divorce. The 256 steps are both a physical and metaphorical distance that separate Juliette's two worlds.

McGill doesn't need essays?

<p>I just applied for the Ba and BSc program and its strange how they dont require essays. Maybe they’ll send me a link to a supplement form to my email soon? </p>

<p>Does anyone know about the McGill admission process?</p>

<p>The web site is very specific about what the requirements are. No essay.</p>

<p>so what the chances of getting admitted for someone with avg sat scores [2100]? with no essay i have one less option of impressing them…</p>

<p>Welcome to Canada. No, seriously. Because all of our universities are public (ie. government funded) and not private (ie. alumni funded), admission is largely based on grades and test scores because it is less selective in that way. Essays are only required for the scholarship application.</p>

<p>I’m not sure about SAT scores for McGill as I’m a Canadian (no SAT required!), but I know that they love it if you’ve taken IB (or AP I guess). I’ve heard this from friends who now attend McGill. :)</p>

<p>at Mcgill u dont need stellar sat scores…also since sat is optional for international students, u can judge what their critereon sat for intels wud be …</p>

<p>How even can u think of 2100 sat 1 as an average sat … thats ridiculous. its awesome. …</p>

<p>I still mantain what i always say… SAT1 beyond certain point gives in little benefit and focuss immediately shifts to other parts of the application… </p>

<p>for mcgill…factors::</p>

<p>School Record Class rank Course taken Country Scores( if anygiven) Extra curriculars </p>

<p>U get thru this … u r admitted… This is based upon their location, ,public status … government funding and stats of admission…</p>

<p>SM</p>

<p>alos which is better… mcgill or waterloo… is there a college in canada better than these 2?</p>

<p>Possibly UofT? Queen’s?</p>

<p>u missed the best one …</p>

<p>1st of all , Mcgill is better than waterloo</p>

<p>and Univ of toronto is equally prestigious which u missed</p>

<p>Depends what you are looking for. US and international prestige: McGill, no contest. Intertnational prestige only: also UBC and University of Toronto. Engineering degree: Waterloo. Interesting city: McGill or UBC, avoid any place in Ontario at all cost ;)…</p>

<p>Waterloo is great for engineering + the sciences.</p>

<p>U of Alberta or U of Calgary (where I’m from) are good for oil engineering and oil-related business things. Alberta is the only province in Canada, I believe, to have a surplus this year… and it’s because of oil. They like making sure that most of the money pumped into the schools goes towards that. So if you like oil… come here. I know I’m leaving, if that’s any hint to the city’s social life (ie. there is none). </p>

<p>McGill/UBC/U of T are all pretty big. They have excellent reputations, and for good reason. Also they’re all in fantastic cities (personally, I love Montreal and Vancouver more than Toronto). You really can’t go wrong with one of these three because you can pretty much do anything you like… they all have an enormous amount of programs and opportunities. </p>

<p>York (Schulich), Queen’s, and Western (Ivey School of Business) are the best for business, if you’re into that. They’re quite prestigious within Canada. I have heard from my friends at McGill, however, that the McGill faculty of management is awesome. </p>

<p>Other schools worthy of consideration: Dalhousie (biggest in the maritimes), U of Victoria (great for education + arts), Carleton/Ottawa (journalism or poli sci), etc… </p>

<p>Have fun with all those apps!</p>

<p>is there any finaid for intels in Canada?</p>

<p>Please. UofT, McGill, UBC, Queens, etc have all lost their prestige. You don’t need anything but grades to get into Canadian universities, showing how completely stupid admissions are. I mean, you could come from a dirt stupid school that hands out 90s and there’d be this guy from some harder school getting a 80, and who would they choose? The stupid school kid. There’s no essay, no interview, no written test; you only submit your grades.</p>

<p>I know this kid who failed Grade 12 but retook it. Did the UofT admissions people even notice? No, cause they let him in. They’re too stupid to see you’re from a gifted class so you getting a 75 will be looked over by a 90 from a stupid school. They only look at grades, not even rank or anything.</p>

<p>Your patriotism is misplaced, baseless. I hate Canada: overrated, useless, unproductive, communist. Our university tuition is already rockbottom low, and here we’re trying to lower it even more. Umm hello? Tution has a great purpose and it’s not just for making evil university people richer and already poor students homeless, as the concept of tuition is always played out to be. >:[</p>

<p>whoa so i may/maynot be surrounded by smart kids in the best university of canada…? k… that sux…</p>

<p>when i started the application, I haven’t received my SAT scores yet, so I didn’t put my scores down. Do i need to update it on the application(minerva)? and if i do, how? I am seriously stumped by McGill and btw, I just sent in my SAT score reports to mcgill. does this mean I still have to change it? or do i just leave it? someone help me plzzzzzz thanksss</p>

Honest Review about McGill

  • Because of its overall reputation and global ranking. McGill is well situated in the heart of Montreal. ,
  • The competitive atmosphere, the diverse crowd, the teaching faculty, the well-equipped labs. Moreover, it is well connected with metro and bus routes.
  • I dislike the examination system and the variability in how each course is structured. There is no uniformity in the exam pattern and each professor has the right to design the course according to their needs which might be difficult for some students to follow.

The overall experience is pretty good. The campus has a lot of racial diversity and you meet people from different cultures and ethnicities. We have esteemed faculty and research professionals too. The campus has decent infrastructure with good wifi. The food options are limited on campus but we have good restaurants and fast food outlets nearby.

I received funding from my supervisor and the department. I also received the MITACS Globalink Graduate Fellowship valued at $15000. Only MITACS Globalink Research Internship alumni are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

PhD in cancer biology at McGill

  • McGill is top 2nd in Canada and top 29th worldwide. Also particularly I liked the lab and research work as I exactly wanted to work on basic science and cancer biology. ,
  • Research, academic life, networking opportunities, freedom to attend conferences, events, student life, fun, inter-departmental connections and affiliations
  • Placement opportunities could be more strengthened but I guess this is more of an abroad thing because I know that even masters courses in India provide with placements at the end

Wonderful phase of my life being at McGill. Plethora of opportunities, networking, funding, research ideas and resources availability are all amazing.

I did not receive any international scholarship. I received funding from my supervisor at McGill.

Highly recommend applying to McGill

  • I liked Montreal as a bilingual city and the program sparked my interest.

Overall, I was really satisfied with my college experience. It was some of the best years of my life and expose me to some of the best friends I’ve ever made. It also jumped me onto a path of life long learning, which was very valuable.

Probably the best in Canada

  • Ranking, prestige as being the best in Canada, and presence of a specific professor. ,
  • Education at McGill Faculty of Law is usually focussed more on jurisprudential aspects, so if you love that this University is for you. The workload is going to be heavy so be ready for that. Funding opportunities are limited for Master's students, but getting a RA position is possible, although very tough since JD students will give you tough competition for the same. There are immense networking opportunities if you stay alert and only read your emails properly. ,
  • If you want to go to academia, McGill is a good place to start your journey. Be warned though, the path to academia is long and arduous. ,
  • McGill has the advantage of having an education in French as well. So if you want to learn French, this is the place to be because many students here are from France. But you wouldn't face any difficulty as a Master's student if you don't know any French. Since almost 15 percent of the batch is comprised of people from India, you will feel at home always. Further, McGill has a mix of Common and Civil law, which could be useful if you have an interest in Civil Law.
  • Not too much. If you want to practice in Common Law after graduation, then perhaps you would be better off going to Toronto or Vancouver, since networking opportunities work best in person. Other than that, McGill is golden.

Law fac is something else at McGill University: Superb University culture, chill atrium with a Piano and ping pong table, massive networking opportunities, very-very friendly students (much better than anywhere else in Canada - based on the experience of students who were previously in UBC and UfT), and opportunity to learn French and experience French culture. Located in Montreal, a city like no other. The only drawback is that finding part-time jobs without french can be difficult. Also, NCA students will have to make more efforts than UfT or UBC students owing to location constraints. Remember, if you are in trouble, seek help and there will be some help around every corner. McGill Law is good at that.

McGill University

  • It is the best medical university in the country for the last 15 years and my program is under faculty of medicine.

McGill University, being one of the premier research institutes of the country has truly lived up to its expectations as it has given me a great platform to start my research career with its strong research abilities and a great international outlook. I'm really glad that I took this decision to pursue my masters from this university and looking forward to graduate soon.

I chose this university due to its stature and location. Canada provides better opportunities for jobs after graduation that other countries.

McGill University - application essay to write?

TuyenDo 2 / 1   Jan 9, 2019   #2 Hi there, Usually, there is no need to write essay when applying for undergraduated degree. However, to make your application be strong, you can prepare a letter of intent or letter of purpose and send it with all your required document [transcript, language proficiency proof].

Holt  Educational Consultant - / 15205   Jan 10, 2019   #3 Karim, McGill is a government funded university in Canada. As such, you are not required to write an application essay unless you are looking for a scholarship sponsor. For Canadian universities, they rely mostly on the grades and national exam scores of the students for admission decisions. So there is no need for you to worry, there is no need for you to write any sort of essay for your application to McGill. Just provide the required transcript of records and other documentation as specified on the website. It is pretty much a direct acceptance process based on merit (grades). Now, if you are thinking of applying for a scholarship, then inquire as to what sort of essay or essays the scholarship program will require you to submit and prepare those instead. When it comes to university applications though, just follow the onscreen instructions and your application will be set for submission. Good luck!

McGill University

Personal statement for law school anonymous, what motivates you to pursue a career in law.

I waited patiently by the bench in what all Jomo Kenyatta University chemistry majors call the "Super Lab," staring for what seemed to be hours at a small flask bubbling with something that looked like a cross between Pepto-Bismol and whipped cream. I was waiting for the color to turn just the right shade of blue before I could go home for a late dinner, but it was obvious that this solution was as far from blue as baseball is from rugby. I realized then that "Super Lab" was not so Super, and neither was a career as a chemist.

Every term-break since high school, I worked at Jomo Kenyatta Laboratory as a research assistant. One of my major projects involved working on a team to develop probes for the detection radioactive substances. When I turned in my final report, a computer program that would give the same results in five minutes four people would in a week, my pride turned into disappointment when my supervisor took credit for all of my hard work.

Unbeknownst to me, somewhere in tiny print in the contract signed as an employee; it said something to the effect that as an employee I would relinquish all rights to everything that I developed at Jomo Kenyatta National Laboratory. I felt that it was unfair for a company to claim...

ESSAY 1 –

Why do you intend on pursuing an MBA at this point in your life? Describe your mid-term and long-term visions for your post-MBA career path and how will the Desautels MBA program add value to your future career? (500 words)

This essay presents a condensed version of the conventional career objectives essay, focusing on candidates’ immediate post-graduation job aspirations and their alignment with long-term goals. Begin with a brief overview of your career to set the context before delving into your goals. The structure can be outlined as follows:

Introduction (Career Synopsis)  – 100 words Provide a concise overview of your career background to establish context.

Mid-term & Long-term Goals  – 200 words Elaborate on your long-term vision for the next 5-10 years. Move beyond the “what” and “where” to explain the “why” – the impact you intend to make on a company, industry, clientele, or geographic region. Following this, clearly describe your mid-term intentions, including the specific job you aim to secure after completing your MBA and one or two target firms. The long-term goal should naturally stem from this short-term objective.

Relevance of McGill MBA  – 200 words Demonstrate your understanding of how an MBA from McGill University aligns with your success. Establish concrete connections between the skills you expect to acquire through coursework and extracurricular activities, and your future ambitions. Highlight relevant curricular and programmatic offerings that resonate with your goals. Showcase your knowledge of the program by referencing interactions with students, alumni, or attending info sessions.

The admissions committee seeks assurance that you’ll achieve your goals through their program, so it’s vital to set reasonable expectations. Displaying your capabilities and expertise to enter your chosen sector will create a logical connection for the admissions team. Your response should demonstrate an awareness of McGill’s unique curriculum features.

Clearly articulate how the McGill MBA’s courses directly contribute to your objectives. Take the time to understand the school’s curriculum, special programs, and extracurricular activities. Engaging in online admissions events or conversing with alumni can provide valuable insights.

While some applicants might believe in keeping their goals open-ended, top business schools like McGill University require precise and well-defined objectives.

What qualities would you look for in an MBA classmate when working on a team project and describe how your background and leadership skills will enhance the experience of others?

The essay’s structure can be organized as follows: Begin by outlining the attributes you consider valuable in your peers. This approach enables you to gain diverse perspectives. Select 2-3 attributes you would prioritize in a fellow student during collaborative projects. Elaborate in approximately 150-200 words on the significance of each attribute and how they enhance team performance.

Transition to discussing your own background and skills, highlighting how your unique abilities and qualities can positively impact your peers.

This question reflects a mutual exchange of values. The school aims to assess your understanding of teamwork and collaboration. For instance, varied viewpoints within a classroom or team might lead to conflicts. If you possess conflict resolution skills or an inclusive leadership approach, you play a pivotal role in managing disputes and aligning the team’s objectives. Utilize a past work experience as an illustration. Describe the project, the characteristics of team members, and how your leadership skills facilitated cohesive teamwork to achieve shared goals.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates your awareness of effective collaboration and your capacity to contribute to a harmonious and productive team environment.

ESSAY 3:
