Why Ranveer-Sonakshi's 'Lootera' is the most painfully poetic film ever

'lootera' has completed 11 years of it release. the film was a beautiful love story, an unusual one, starring ranveer singh and sonakshi sinha in the lead..

Listen to Story

Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha starred in 'Lootera'

  • 'Lootera' completed 11 years today
  • Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, it stars Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha
  • 'Lootera' was a love story set in the 1950s

'Lootera', released on July 5, 2013, has completed 11 years of being the most deeply romantic film in Bollywood. Director Vikramaditya Motwane treats the story like a delicate piece of artwork, intricately using Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh's innocence as new actors. It wasn't a commercial hit at the box office, but over the years, it became a film beyond time, telling the story of two suffering souls who were always meant to be together and, at the same time, weren't.

Ranveer plays a conman named Varun Shrivastav who falls in love with Pakhi, an aspiring writer and the only daughter of a Bengali zamindar . The story of the film, though loosely inspired by O' Henry's 100-year-old tale of 'The Last Leaf', finds its silent references from India's beauty in the 1950s. The setting is important because it sets the stage for the most heartbreaking times in the film - the abolition of the Zamindari act in independent India. The meet-cute moment is such a regular scene and yet, when Varun and Pakhi arrive at the end of their love story, you are taken back to that very moment, around trees when she was driving her car for the first time, and he was a mere cycle rider.

The romance in 'Lootera' is simply for the ones who live and appreciate everything 'old school'. There are slow burnings of desires, two beating hearts familiar with the resilience and the flexibility of love, and eyes constantly longing for 'the one'. Unlike other romantic films, it doesn't aim at making the lovers meet at the end. In 'Lootera', the journey is the end and every moment is a new beginning.

Upon its release, it was deemed a slow film (a better way of telling the audience that it was boring) but 11 years later, it stands as the most crucial film in Bollywood's journey of showing the evolution of romance on screen. Physical intimacy was not avoided here, but it is not everything. For Ranveer's Varun, Pakhi's silent gaze, her interest in reading and her curiosity, drive the attraction. His charm, the way he knows it all and the care that he exudes make Pakhi fall in love. And this is not the kind of love which makes you dance all around or forces you to forget yourself. The whole ' cheezein main rakh ke bhul jati hoon... kuch toh hua hai, kuch ho gaya hai ' celebration doesn't work here. The love here is as deep as it can be. It's the sharpest object piercing your heart and also the balm with the best healing properties.

'Lootera' gets Ranveer and Sonakshi to design a couple who doesn't put emotions, drama and sensitivity in the backseat. In fact, their relationship is driven by these very instincts. Varun's emotions take the best of him when he leaves Pakhi on their wedding day and her heartbreak is so strong that she never talks about him ever. Even when he's at her doorstep years later, needing her to tend to his bullet wounds, she doesn't ask him how and why. It's not a story taking you from point A to point B. Rather, a satisfying story despite an unusually romantic ending.

lootera movie review in hindi

The Indian Express rating : ** 1/2

I should have watched Lootera backwards, because it finishes with an almost unbearable loveliness. The ache in the heart comes as a welcome relief, but a little too late. The journey towards the end is shot through with beauty, one painterly frame after another evoking admiration, but it did not touch me. And that is where Vikramaditya Motwane’s film becomes a disappointing second act, after his magnificent debut Udaan.

Lootera ,set in the early ’50s,tells the story of Varun (Singh) and Pakhi (Sinha) in a manner most Indian filmmakers have forgotten. Motwane knows how to pace his tale to match an old-wordly tempo: it is a unhurried build-up of time and place that takes you to the village of Manikpur in West Bengal in 1953,poised at the grand lifestyle of the zamindars about to go bust, and slides you into the opulent bubble that the local zamindar ( Chanda) and his daughter Pakhi live in.

The arrival of the young, personable Varun and his companion (Massey) to set up an archeological dig around the haveli brings the first fissures. You can see why the motherless Pakhi, who has found solace only in her father’s doting arms till now, will gravitate towards Varun. But I did not feel any reciprocal heat from Varun. He has his reasons for keeping his distance, because he is not who he claims he is. But when there is youth and passion, all reason flees. She shows her longing clearly. From him,you want more, not unreadable sidelong glances, and a stealing away when no one is looking. The main hook that should have kept you with them,is missing.

The first half, which should have been the dance of desire between these two people,is impacted by this inexplicable remoteness. Varun’s back story, with a no-good uncle (Zakaria),is clunkily done, and there are entire stretches where you are disconnected. The story, post half time, catches traction, and for me becomes the film. Almost. Time has elapsed. From a huge haveli with countless rooms,Pakhi has now moved to a small family guesthouse in Dalhousie, having lost her father, and other treasures that cocooned her during her growing up years. As she struggles with heartbreak, and a terminal illness (the kind that brings blood to a handkerchief, such an old-timey disease),Varun comes back to her life, and that takes both to the brink.

Festive offer

Post interval, you can see better the influence of the great O’Henry short story (The Last Leaf),on which it is based. It is a more intimate canvas, and you finally see two lovers striving towards each other, breaths mingling. The bit parts, played by a cop (Hussain) who is after the fleet-footed Varun, and the housekeeper (Dutta) of the guesthouse, remain bit parts. The cop is responsible for an implausible plot point, which seems to be put in there to allow Singh to loosen up and show his feelings, both to the girl he had left behind, and to us. As the film quickens,so do we: Motwane is in form here,as he gives us doomed lovers spiraling out of control, leading to a memorable climax.

But I wish Singh had been freed up more. His slate is bland. Much of the first half of the film is too, being revved up by its background music. The good parts of the film can be divvied up between cinematograher Mahendra Shetty’s wizardry with the camera, the terrific,spot-on Barun Chanda, and Sonakshi Sinha. She plays Pakhi with surety, even when her eyes are too heavily ringed denoting sickness, channeling her emotions without holding back, allowing herself to get ugly while weeping. She is the real looteri; her Lootera should have had more heft. So should have the film. It has left me with some indelible scenes which are sheer poetry, but this is one of those films that I wanted to like much more than I did.

The Story Is The Hero In Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera

The Story Is The Hero In Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera

It is hard to come by Bollywood films these days that let you simply sit back and enjoy a well-woven story unfold on screen. A sure-shot box-office success requires the promise of a visual spectacle. A larger than life hero, flying cars, well-choreographed fight sequences and punchlines sure make for a good popcorn flick. But amidst a barrage of these 'mass' movies, the appeal of a story has somewhat suffered a setback. Maybe in a world of breaking news, swipes, trolls and short attention spans, the audience neither has the patience nor the appetite for it. So it is always nice when once in a blue moon, film makers attempt breathing life into a good story. The 2013 movie Lootera was one such honest attempt, and the output is nothing short of a gem.

Lootera released when I was starting out with a new phase in my life as a hosteller in a B-school. I remember Amit Trivedi 's hummable Sawaar Loon playing regularly on the TV channels in the campus-canteen. A friend introduced me to the other-worldliness of the musical marvel Manmarziyan. I got addicted to it and would often play it on a loop. For me, the appeal of the movie lay in all its songs; there was something very fresh about them – both the tunes and the visuals were kind of calming and earthy. I had already fallen for the music and was itching to watch the movie. What kept me from catching Lootera in the theatres though was a gruelling MBA curriculum and the pressure of securing a summer placement. Academia left no scope for romancing the cinema, or for romance in general.

Download The Script Of Lootera

Cut to the present, and I am no longer bound by the pressures of exams and job placements. Adulting has its own advantages. And so, just the other day sitting in a cab, when I caught Manmarziyan playing on the radio, I was gripped by a weird sense of determination. As if in a trance, I got home, kicked off my shoes, prepared myself some curd rice and settled down on the couch to watch Lootera on Netflix. And boy did it deliver. Right from the beginning, the creators get the mood of the movie right. The ululating women and the drums instantly transport one to Bengal. And as Pakhi's Baba narrates the 'Bheel Raja and tota' story to her, I forget all about the review-meeting on tomorrow's schedule. "Beta mera tota aap ho," the sentence sounds enchanting and alarming at the same time.

Thereon, the movie takes a breezy tone. The funny car incident brings an inadvertent smile to my face. Sonakshi Sinha is endearing as Pakhi. And a reserved, gentlemanly Ranveer Singh as Varun, is quite refreshing and intriguing. It is a delight to watch love bloom between the two characters. My favourite scene in the movie is the one with Varun and Pakhi sitting by the river. It is a beautiful frame wherein time seems to have stopped for both the characters. Their short conversation sums up the entire movie. When Varun says "Ek baar marne se pahle Chandratal dekhna chahta hoon. Neela hara paani. Aur zara si bhi awaaz nahin," you like the guy for who he is. Pakhi is very clear about what she wants to do with her life, "Main likhna chahti hoon. Mujhe dher saari kitaabein likhni hain. Kabhi kabhi sochti hoon yahaan se bhaag jaoon apne Dalhousie vaale ghar mein, aur vahaan baith kar likhti rahoon, likhti rahoon. Baahar barf girti rahegi aur andar main," Pakhi does get away from Manikpur and attempts writing in her house in Dalhousie. Ironically, her sense of vengeance interferes with her writing process. Varun cherishes his desire to see Chandratal till the last moments leading up to his death and his wish remains unfulfilled.

Contrasts play out very well in the movie. In all of the first half, the haveli, the attires donned by the characters, the musical score – everything lends to the old world charm of Bengal. The music adds to the carefree, youthful days in sunny Manikpur. But the incongruity hits hard when we enter the intense second half. The gloomy Dalhousie winter seems to play a role of its own in the movie. The Dalhousie we are shown is nothing like Pakhi's magical description of the place back in Manikpur. "Bahut sundar jagah hai Dalhousie. Aur jab barf padhti hai naa thand mein, bahut mazaa aata hai" The snow, on the contrary, is ruthless to one and all. Pakhi grapples with sickness, loneliness and the pain of loss. She is no longer the warm and friendly girl from Manikpur. A wounded and helpless Varun is struggling for survival with the police chasing after him. He has lost his chutzpah. He is tired and crumbling under the weight of his crimes. The mood is so sombre that even the audience ends up missing the good old days.

Also read: #69 Lootera: Top 100 Bollywood Albums

It takes immense effort to honestly portray a grey character like Varun with a convincing arc and make the audience accept him as the anti-hero. The last song is a befitting backdrop to his final act of penance. "Mujhe chod do mere haal pe, zinda hoon yaar kaafi hai" – you can almost hear a defeated yet gritty Varun say those lines. The song has this unmistakably uplifting effect despite the tragedy at play.

In the end, you don't know whom to feel sorry for. Everything goes wrong and there is no happy ending. And yet that last, seemingly silly act of Varun tying the leaf to the barren tree manages to end the movie on a high note. The amateur-ish painter who once found it hard to paint leaves, paints 'the last leaf' in the hope that a bitter Pakhi retains her will to live. Varun goes to his death smiling, having done his bit to make up for the irreparable harm he inflicted on Pakhi. Despite her deep hatred for Varun, Pakhi finally seems to forgive him towards the end. There is a sense of closure even when the ill-fated, intertwined lives of the two characters remain incomplete. And that's the beauty of the story.

Lootera Ending Explained & Spoilers

Lootera Ending Explained & Spoilers: How Does Ranveer Singh’s Movie End?

By Shruti Kotiya

Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha’s period romance, Lootera , is an underrated Bollywood movie that beautifully showcases various shades of love, heartbreak, and life.

Vikramaditya Motwane directed the movie. It is produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures and Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl’s Phantom Films. It also stars Barun Chanda, Vikrant Massey, Arif Zakaria, Adil Hussain and Divya Dutt.

Although the movie was a commercial failure at the box office, it was critically acclaimed for Sonakshi Sinha’s and Ranveer Singh’s performances. The movie is based on author O. Henry’s 1907 short story The Last Leaf.

Lootera is set in the 1950s, against the backdrop of the Zamindari Abolition Act by the newly independent India. It revolves around a young conman posing as an archaeologist to the daughter of a Bengali zamindar. It was released theatrically on July 5, 2013 .

Check out the trailer for the movie:

Lootera Ending: Was Varun caught?

In the second half of Lootera, a sick Pakhi is seen living all alone in Dalhousie with her maid, Shyama. Her father had died, and she was still recovering from her heartbreak. When Inspector K. N. Singh asked her to help him catch Varun, she refused to do so, as she wanted to forget him.

Soon after, both Varun and Dev arrived in Dalhousie for their next heist. They stayed at a lodge on Pakhi’s property. However, things took a drastic turn when the police learned about their whereabouts. Varun then killed Dev and a constable to escape. But he was also shot in the encounter. He managed to remove the bullet and then sought refuge at Pakhi’s house.

Was Varun able to escape?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lootera (@looterafilm)

Pakhi and Shyama try to hand Varun over to the police, but he threatens them. Eventually, Pakhi gives in, but she still feels enraged and starts repelling Varun’s comforting explanations. In a letter, she explains to him that she was suffering from tuberculosis and would die the day the last leaf fell from the tree outside the window. Shyama then leaves, promising Varun that he will not report him to the police.

Initially, Varun plans his escape but chooses to stay behind to look after Pakhi. He tells her his real name, Atmanand Tripathi, and confesses that he has regretted letting her go since his escape. Soon, Pakhi starts warming up to him, and her faith remains intact when each day she finds one last leaf hanging onto the tree.

Did Pakhi get better?

At the end of Lootera, Varun decides to leave after seeing Pakhi’s improving condition. He takes off but comes face-to-face with a police blockade on the road, and they shoot him dead in an encounter.

Later, Pakhi wakes up to find Varun gone, but the last leaf is still intact on the tree. She starts growing suspicious and discovers that the leaf has been fixed to the tree by Varun. Every night, he would tie it to a branch so that she would not give up hope. She learns about it after she looks closely at the leaf and sees that it has been painted on, leaving her teary-eyed.

Lootera (2013) is one of the most aesthetically appropriate and emotionally engaging films that I have had the pleasure of watching. Once I watched it, I understood that it was a magnificent film that would stay with me for a really long time.

The film is loosely based on a short story (The Last Leaf) by O. Henry, while also making a number of significant additions in the adapted screenplay (the most important one being the character of Varun Srivastava/Nandu/Atmanand Tripathi played by Ranveer Singh). It is a period drama that unfolds in the early 1950s (1953 and 1954) in Manikpur, West Bengal. That was the time when India had freshly gained independence, electricity was still being introduced in small towns and zamindari was on the verge of getting abolished.

Sinha plays Pakhi Roy Chowdhary, a pampered daughter of a wealthy zamindar (Barun Chanda) and Singh plays a conman posing as an archaeologist named, Varun. In a very simplistic sense, Lootera (2013) is an untold tragic love story from the bygone era. However, underneath this, there are myriad layers of filmmaking that it constantly explores.

On first looking at the title, one cannot possibly discern what the film is going to be about. Similar to the apparent plot, the title is deceptively simple. One might initially think that it is a quintessential Bollywood film with a larger than life hero, who has some amazing other worldly skills, only to be pleasantly surprised. The titular protagonist does possess skills- skills of honesty and earnestness.

Lootera 2013 Ranveer with a hat

Singh, who was just two films old when Lootera had come out, handles the nuances of the character with sheer courage. He beautifully translates the doomed character of Varun on screen. He does it so diligently that one hates him for what he has done, while also feeling sorry for his circumstances and crying with him when he says to Pakhi, “… tum ek iklauta mauka thi meri zindagi mein jeene ka jo maine gava diya… meri zindagi mein sabne mujhe istemaal kiya hai… pyaar sirf tumne kiya… aur uski keemat nahin chuka paaya…” One can’t help but feel helpless for him.

Sinha portrays an equally stellar Pakhi. She showcases brilliantly the transformation of her character from a hopeful and cheerful girl to a disillusioned romantic and a writer struggling with her feelings. One loves her in the first half and pities her in the second. She is elegant as well as graceful. She astonishes the audience with the depth that she brings to her role, something which was unexpected from her, given the kind of cinema she had done in the past.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that both Singh and Sinha, have worked really hard to deliver their best performances in Lootera (2013), one which would be remembered for a long time and would be challenging to top. The supporting cast is equally astounding with Vikrant Massey as Deb, Varun’s endearing pal; Adil Hussain as K.N. Singh, the dutiful cop and Barun Chanda, as a doting father among others.

The script of the film is extremely well thought out and well written. It is knit with such deep understanding of the human nature that it seems real, even though, one knows that it can hardly ever be true. The manner in which the film explores human connections shows the profound sensitivity of the filmmakers.

Lootera 2013 Sonakshi Sinha

It is as amazing as it is owing to the terrific cinematography by Mahendra J Shetty. It rises to a whole new level due to the great shots that are interspersed throughout. The frames have an easy and lucid flow and it is a treat to watch them change. The division between the first and the second half is made through the ingenuous use of colours, with gold, green, violet and scarlet dominating the first half whereas blue and white predominating the second half. It seems that one is looking at a phenomenal painting as a voiceover of a lyrical poetry goes on in the background. One is lost in the mesmerizing beauty of it and amazed at such a pure conception of reality. This is the kind of effect that Shetty has created with his 35 mm lens.

The music of Lootera (2013) is melodious and lyrical in sync with the style of the 50s. It works wonders and is so strategically placed that it seems nothing but organic. Every word of every song makes so much more sense when played in the film. Every song has something to take away from, be it the hopeful anticipation of first love in the very first track, Sanwaar Loon or the exhausting nitty-gritties of human existence in the very last, Zinda.  Ankahee is an elegy to an undocumented love story while Monta Re is an ode to the Bengali folk tradition. Manmarziyan and Shikayatein are about a lost love returned but doomed to never be yours.

The greatest strength of this film is its pauses and silences, wherein the audience can pause too, to analyse the characters and understand them better. It deals with love with utmost sincerity and subtlety and lets it unfold at its own pace. This film is on its way to becoming a classic and is as good as films can possibly get.

Movie Review: Lootera

Lootera

Director: Vikramditya Motwane Cast: Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha, Adil Hussain, Vikrant Massey and Barun Chanda Lootera is like a Monet landscape. Picturesque and poignant at the same time. It takes a simple O Henry story – The Last Leaf, and adapts it to a period setting in Bengal and North East India. It’s a work of art. Slow, deliberate and introspective. It’s one of the best films you’ll watch this year. It’s a triumph of its director’s vision. And a win for the performances of its lead actors. The best literary works are essentially simple stories. What makes them great, memorable or unique is innovative wordplay. Great cinema is no different. Sometimes the way you tell the story makes all the difference and in case of Lootera, director Vikramaditya Motwane pulls all the right cinematic punches. Whether it’s his intentional hark back to Guru Dutt’s Baazi (1951) or the scene where Sonakshi Sinha plays with the bulb switch, this film looks like a perfect homage to the golden age of Indian cinema. Dutt would’ve been proud. A large part of the credit should also go to the cinematographer Mahendra Shetty and the art direction team. Not only have they got the period feel right, they’ve captured the mood of O Henry’s imagery just the way it should’ve been. Full marks to Amit Trivedi’s lyrical music that adds a great old school charm to the film. The simple story deals with a thug named Varun (Ranveer Singh) who arrives on the estate of a ’50s zamindar with the intentions of ripping him off. He falls in love with the zamindar’s daughter and things snow ball from there into a bevy of emotions. The beauty of Lootera lies in the fact that it intertwines tragedy and irony with wit and humour. It’s has moments of genuine humour and it has moments that wrench your heart’s vessels. All of this happens because it explores its characters relationships with a new perspective. Hindi films have taught us that lovers can run around trees. But Lootera shows you their lives can be as grim and grey as snowy evenings. And that life itself can be as frail as autumn leaves. The allegories working in Lootera are subliminal. Satyajit Ray would’ve been proud. There’s one minor rough edge though. The ending is a bit of a misfit. Revealing any details would be giving away spoilers but the final cut at the end leaves you with an unrequited set of emotions. The reality would be a lot more inconvenient. Having said that, everything about this dark love story seems right thanks to Sonakshi Sinha’s performance. If you know her as the 100-crore girl who shakes and swings at the drop of a hat you’re in for a surprise. Her nuanced act tugs at your tear glands. A good compliment to Sonakshi’s anchoring performance is Ranveer Singh’s underplay. He proves he’s an actor to reckon with. And he does so despite having a character in shadow of Sonakshi’s Pakhi. Supporting performances by Barun Chanda (playing Sonakshi’s Zamindar father), Vikrant Massey (Ranveer’s best friend) and Adil Hussain (the tough as nails cop) are all top notch too. Lootera is a must watch. It’s cinematic art. We should make more movies like this.

Lootera Reviews

Rajeev Masand

Drop whatever else you're doing, and soak in this love saga.

Shubhra Gupta

It has left me with some indelible scenes which are sheer poetry, but this is one of those films that I wanted to like much more than I did.

Khalid Mohamed

'Lootera' looks splendid, and despite the languorous tempo, you’re steadily drawn into a world where it was still feasible to fall in love at first sight. All the pros and cons considered, here’s a commendable labour of love, enhanced by Amit Trivedi’s music score. And once again, the director extracts impressive performances. Barun Chanda as the zamindar is believable. Ranveer Singh, using a subdued manner of dialogue pitch, is kept on a tight leash, leading to a correctly restrained performance. Sonakshi Sinha exudes sincerity and is convincing, especially when she dispenses with make-up and any traces of glamour.

Raja Sen

A film, then, about life, love and leaves. And in the end it comes down to the sort of snow-surrounded tree that you can draw even if you've always had trouble drawing leaves. Magnificent.

Ananya Bhattacharya

There are films that leave such an impact on you that one wonders whether he/she should even write a review for it. Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’ is one such film. Calling it a film would probably be a deep injustice to it – it is nothing short of poetry on celluloid. ‘Lootera’ puts a dagger through the heart, makes it bleed profusely and then smears the elixir called love all over it.

Reviewer Profile

Inspired from American author O. Henry's short story The Last Leaf, Lootera is a beautifully narrated, well-crafted love story that will make you fall in love with it again and again.

Sarit Ray

Flaws notwithstanding, Lootera is of a standard that’s inarguably higher than the Bollywood average. Here’s a director to watch out for. Behrman’s masterpiece came in The Last Leaf. Motwane’s is yet to come.

Aseem Chhabra

Motwane’s Lootera (a very fine follow-up to his outstanding Udaan) is lovely film, a blessing for fans of Bollywood who seek real, relatable characters, a meaningful story, a narrative that takes them on a romantic journey, filled with a lot of joy and balanced with some much needed sense of heartache.

Saibal Chatterjee

Now the big question: will a film like Lootera work at the box office? The question is irrelevant. It wouldn’t matter, at least from the critical point of view, even if it were to fail to get its point across to an audience weaned on Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore, Son of Sardar and suchlike. It would still be a magnificent film.

Meena Iyer

Every frame is a picture postcard. Sonakshi, Barun Chanda and Ranveer need special mention. However, be suitably warned; the old-world aura and the languid pace are not for the young and restless.

Sarita Tanwar

Lootera stands apart from every Hindi film in the last decade at least. You wouldn't want to miss such a unique cinematic experience.

Mohar Basu

Lootera is one film that will overwhelm you. Vikramaditya Motwane has given a seraphic piece that glorifies cinema itself. The narrative is framed on a devastative tapestry and the film’s climax knots up calamitously that will keep one absorbed. Sonakshi Sinha’s smashing performance is first rate and the film’s tone and timber is scrumptious! I am going with 4/5 for Lootera! Films like these have the milieu of a classic that shall soar its way to glories!

Vinayak Chakravorty

The good thing about Bollywood's GenNow top lot is most of them are trying to make a difference, beyond the obvious stardom circus. Lootera underlines why the standard Bollywood romance need not be about a crazed loverboy chasing the girl. Love stories, the film reminds you, can have layers too.

Both Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha are in for intense roles in Lootera who explore each other's feelings beautifully. The music of the film is breezy and touching. A well-crafted film by Motwane, definitely a must watch.

Taran Adarsh

On the whole, LOOTERA is an intrinsically earnest and profoundly heartwarming story that stays in your heart. An absolute must for those who love romantic films or are romantic at heart. This one's a cinematic gem!

Rummana Ahmed

‘Lootera’ oozes with the allure of an old-world charm and Sonakshi befittingly plays the heroine of this epic drama. Vikramaditya Motwane’s subtle love story has an inherent appeal but is weighed down by a labored pace.

Audience Reviews for Lootera

Shashwat Sisodia

Lootera directed by Vikramaditya Motwane was an instantly rare film which didn't choose the simplistic love story. It had a generic, but genuinely arresting first half, where these lovers- Pakhi and Varun, meet each other, thanks to an accident. This sets up a simplistic mood. However, the second half comes up as a pleasant surprise, as these lovers turn into the metaphors for unflinching love and separation. This is a rare kind of love story which thrills you with its consistent, melancholic tone. The performances by Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh make you stay with the film. I loved it. It was one of the most best Hindi films of the year 2013 after 'The Lunchbox'. Rarely you get intimate with a feature film.

Lasit Roy

Superb love story. Acting performence is outstanding. A good film to watch. Story is also praiseworthy.

Dev

"Lootera" directed by Vikramaditya Motwane is a beautifully directed movie. Every set is a masterpiece itself. Sonakshi proves herself to be an elegant actress and the chemistry between lead pair is great. Ranvir singh is just increasing his level of acting. Cinematography is incredible and music by amit trivedi is perfect and its a rare flawless movie.

Neonika

I give this movie a perfect score because it's a triumph for Indian filmmaking at so many levels. There is no melodramatic, over-the-top acting, no flamboyant palacial sets and no jarring song and dance sequences that are usually meant to fill a thin plot. Vikramaditya Motwane's film is art at its best. Acting is top-notch, especially Sonakshi's portrayal of Pakhi. A lot has been conveyed through facial expressions rather than dialogue. The pacing did not bother me at all because there is so much lyrical quality on screen that I'm glad it isn't rushed (unlike the music video pace that Bollywood has lately adopted). The Art direction gets my biggest applause for transporting the audience to the 50s with such careful attention to detail. Its not a fantastical environment like in Bhansali's 'Devdas'- rather it comes across as a well researched recreation of history. And Pakhi's wardrobe is completely drool worthy. The inspiration from O. Henry's "The last leaf" comes only in the second half and it is interwoven extremely well with the rest of the story. The last 30 minutes do become predictable even if you haven't read the story, but that's excusable considering that you're watching poetry on celluloid.

6 Years of 'Lootera': A Cinematic Gem That Is Still Robbed of The Appreciation It Deserves

Jinal Bhatt

I remember walking into the theatre for Band Baaja Baaraat with zero expectations, and walking out as a converted fan of this debutant, Ranveer Singh. His Dilli-ka-launda- Bittoo Sharma act had my attention. But it wasn't until his third film that Ranveer Singh turned full-blown thief and stole my heart. The year was 2013, and the movie was Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera , also starring Sonakshi Sinha.

lootera movie review in hindi

Motwane's Udaan was a high-flier of a film, earning him a standing ovation at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, as well as acclaim back home with seven Filmfare awards. Lootera was his second film, and therefore, expectations were rather high too. The film was a loose adaptation of O. Henry's short story, The Last Leaf. The story was an out-and-out slow romance, a subject that would, if made true to its genre, be considered too artsy for mainstream cinema.

And yet, here we were with a casting that was perhaps the exact opposite. Sonakshi Sinha's filmography up until then were mainstream Bollywood masala capers like Dabangg , Rowdy Rathore , Himmatwala and so on. As for Ranveer Singh, he was barely two films old, and his last one, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl hadn't exactly done all that well. Both these actors were about to venture into shaky territory, and even I, as a Ranveer Singh fan, wasn't sure if Baba would be able to pull off a character like this which required a certain restraint.

With Lootera , Vikramaditya Motwane painted poetry on screen. And Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha breathed life into it with their acting. Perhaps, it wouldn't be off the mark to say it remains, till date, one of their best performances. Actually, scratch that, as a certified Baba fan, I can assert to that without a second thought for Singh, at least. That was our first glimpse of a muted Ranveer Singh, and the maturity in his performance even back then was incredible. You, his fan, were his lover and yet couldn't help detesting him for what he had done. And when the climax came, you wept for him.

lootera movie review in hindi

Sonakshi's Pakhi was portrayed with such conviction! The daughter of a zamindar who would always hold her head high, in health and in sickness, and even in the face of the man who broke her heart so terribly that she could never recover. This Sonakshi is so missed today, now that she's given herself completely to playing second fiddle to male leads. Lootera was as much her film as Ranveer's, and makes us want to see more of the both of them in such roles.

Lootera was a period romance, and the vintage was as overt as it was in the details—from the grace and mannerisms of Pakhi to the character traits of Varun/Nandu. From the art direction that got the physical setting right to Amit Trivedi's music and Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics. Even its silences were golden, words if spoken then in hushed tones as if saying them aloud would somehow break their meaning. That, coupled with the earthy hues and blues that coloured the film, gave it this ethereal dream-like quality, like an old folktale that was unfolding slowly.

Cinematographer Mahendra J Shetty's treatment of the film was what gave this painting the allure of a poetry. The visuals were breathtaking, capturing the locales of rural Bengal to the snows of Dalhousie, where the film ends, with such mastery. Notable mentions must include the chase sequence between the police and Singh's Nandu and the song 'Zinda Hoon Yaar', which shows Nandu's efforts to affix a hand-painted leaf to the top of the tree which has become Pakhi's lifeline and his redemption for all that he has done. The visuals of the film were easily its heart.

And if the cinematography was the heart, then Lootera 's music was its soul. To this day, 'Zinda', 'Manmarziyan' and 'Sawaar Loon' remains a favourite on my playlist, with 'Monta Re' in Swanand Kirkire's voice being the album's calling card for many. The music was reminiscent of the film's time period, with that old-world charm seeping through every melody.

Director Vikramaditya Motwane and his Lootera have been recognised critically for the beautiful piece of art that the movie is . But somewhere it does feel that the movie has been robbed of its status as one of the best films of Motwane, Ranveer and Sonakshi's career by their fans. Perhaps, the slow romance and classic subject of the film was the real lootera ? The movie is definitely an acquired taste, and like wine, needs to breathe before it can be enjoyed to the fullest.

Time Out says

Based on a 1907 short story by the American writer O Henry (‘The Last Leaf’), this Bollywood period romance is a sumptuous visual and emotional triumph. Set in 1953 in West Bengal, India, archaeologist Varun (Ranveer Singh) is new in town and charms a rich aristocratic family, and in particular their spoilt pretty daughter Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha). Romance predictably blossoms (via enchanting songs), but when the relationship is revealed, Varun does a runner. Determined to move on, Pakhi heads to another city to rebuild her life only to re-encounter Varun.

There is much to admire in this big budget Hindi film that never falls into the trappings of the ‘masala’ formula. Instead, director Vikramaditya Motwane adopts a leisurely, understated pace with a little dialogue speaking volumes about the characters. Performances are uniformly impressive, with Sonakshi Sinha finally getting the meaty role she deserves. Amit Trivedi’s dreamy soundtrack is evocative of a bygone era and adds to the old world charm of the film. It mourns the demise of stormy love while affirming the strength of the human spirit. Modern day Indian audiences may find it difficult to engage with a film that treats its audience with respect and even intelligence. Discerning fans of sensible Bollywood are in for a treat.

the most powerful human experience transformed into a sense of imaginary devotion displayed not only by symbols but gestures as simple as cooking for them or checking their temperature. not to loose self for another but to achieve a sense of ecstasy like no other that brings about a profound realisation that you may not be bound by human limitation, you may transcend to another dimension, a dimension devoid of mortality

There's a stunning sequence at the end of this film, where Varun climbs a tree in a snowstorm. The filmmakers take the white, grey, and blue palette and contrast it with an orange and red leaf, and then have the wind, the tree, and Varun provide us with a sequence of movement and tension and wonder. Set to warm music that adds to the contrast, it is a moment of sweeping romance you don't get to see much anymore.

A brilliantly crafted and performed period romantic drama, one that takes you on a heart wrenching emotional journey of life, love, betrayal and deceit. The climax was a classic end. Though it’s slow paced, the beautiful visuals-music, nuanced detailing and the story telling conviction make it quite an intriguing watch.

What better way to adapt a poetic literary work than to make your whole film feel like poetry :)

O. Henry must be smiling from ear to ear, knowing that his work inspired such a beautiful, delicate piece of art. Happy eighth anniversary to my favorite Hindi film of the last decade 🍁❤️

9 years of this stunning masterpiece by Vikramaditya Motwane, I am still in awe of this wonderfully constructed unforgettable film which leaves me with a tear in eye, but a smile on my face everytime I watch it.

Lootera or I should call it nemesis of the tear duct is a story of redemption and transcendence. It poignantly presents its message about the transformative power of love which looks cheesy on paper, but Motwane's sincere commitment in making this film, significantly elevates the material. Time and again he uses silence to punctuate the emotional beats. Leisurely passages elapse in which no dialogue is traded and the background score is relied on to either subtly accentuate a moment or take over…

first of all monta re is my favourite song to hear whenever I'm low (most of the time). Swanand Kirkire Ji's Vocals, Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics and soul touching music.

i can't describe how much i actually love this film. having watched it very early when I had no reasoning to understand movies but still mesmerized by that last leaf concept, i always wanted to properly watch it. and more than my wish coming to fruition this film touches my heart and exceedes my expectations and I'm still in awe of it. This is not a film.. This is experience .... Watching this film is like reading a classic Bengali Novel during winters near the heater and experiencing something which is new and exciting... Though we use the word poetic very easily for the cinematic excellence, this film totally justifies the poetry in motion.. From production design to costume design to sets to beautiful editing of the film and the way they used old classic hindi songs is nothing less then beautiful and they works together brilliantly and special love for Mahendra Shetty to capture the essence of the film and for that last 10 mins of the film which is some of the best camerawork I've ever seen....
