Groundnut (Arachis Hypogea) originated from Latin America (Brazil) and was introduced into West Africa by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. Its actual origin dates back to 350 BC (Komolafe et al., 1985 and Hommons, 2019). It is botanically a member of the papilionaceae and is the largest and most important member of the leguminosae (Shankarappa, Robert, and Virginia, 2016). This crop is considered to have great potential for both food and industrial purposes in the tropical regions of Africa (Milner, 2015). In some parts of Nigeria like Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Borno States, it is used as a source of revenue generation to support rural development (Maduako et al., 2019).

Groundnut product demand is on the increase and the application is largely dependent on the cleanness of the nuts. The separation process is usually an energy sapping task that requires a lot of time. In order to separate the nuts from its shell effectively a shelling machine was developed. The machine employs an auger screw as a means of breaking the groundnut pod. The machine basically comprises of shelling chamber, separating chamber and a motor (1HP). The arrangement of these parts is connected by a compound belt of type B standard V-belt of pitch length 1694mm. With the Von-mises equation, the material for the shelling shaft is taken to be mild steel. The materials used in the fabrication of the machine are sourced locally so as to ensure that it is cheap, affordable and easily maintained by the peasant farmers. The shelling efficiency and material damage are 84% and 14% respectively for groundnut seeds of 86.5% dry.

A centrifugal Bambara groundnut pod shelling machine was earlier designed and constructed to crack various sizes and varieties of Bambara groundnut. The sheller was fabricated and designed with locally available materials. The machine consists of three main units, namely the hopper, shelling unit and power transmission unit. The sheller only cracked the nuts with it product being the shell and the kernel combined. The results of the test showed that the cracking efficiency, seed breakings, partially shelled pods, unshelled pods and the machine capacity were 83.2 %, 17.4 %, 7.8 %, 9 % and 75000 seeds/hr respectively. This design was modified to incorporate a separating unit to save timeliness of operation and enhance efficient processing of Bambara groundnut. A bulk quantity of Bambara groundnut pods purchased from a local market. The moisture content of the Bambara groundnut pods was varied at five different levels; 5.2, 8.9, 12.9, 17.2 and 21.4% (d.b). One hundred pods were selected for each pod sample and introduced into the centrifugal cracker. Result showed that 5.2% moisture content gave the best performance of 87.5% shelling efficiency, 2.8% breakage 4.5% unshelled pods, 5.2% partially shelled pods and winnowing efficiency of 86.7%. The blower speed was varied at three different levels (1800, 1450, 1000 rpm) respectively. Results showed that blower speed of 1800rpm gave the best performance of winnowing efficiency of 86.7%.

An integrated groundnut decorticating and winnowing machine which bears a 1 Ihp, 1000 r.p.m. electric motor was designed and developed. It is a 1000mm x 400mm x300 mm machine of gross mass 33.42kg which makes it portable. Falling pods from the hopper are struck by a rotating dehusking drum of 72.2 N force, the chaffs are blown out through a window and the seeds fall down and out via a chute. All the components of this machine were sourced locally making the overall cost cheap and affordable to the people in contrast with the decorticators imported from overseas.

This work is aim at the design and development of a low cost groundnut decorticating machine for home and commercial use in Nigeria.4.36Kg of roasted groundnut was fed into the machine; this produces an average mass of 3.43Kg of peeled roasted groundnut seeds, 0.462Kg of unpeeled groundnut seeds,0.399Kg of partially peeled groundnut seed and 0.07Kg of broken groundnut seed. An average time of 488.8seconds and an average peeling efficiency of 78.46% was recorded. It was observed that the higher the mass of the roasted groundnut seeds the longer the time of peeling. The machine is cheap because the parts are locally fabricated. The technology could provide employment and at the same time make available quality roasted groundnut seeds at low cost for domestic and commercial use in Nigeria.

Groundnut is a valuable and important crop which is cultivated almost throughout theworld. The groundnut must be cracked to obtain peanut so it can be further used for extraction of oil and used in food items. The traditional way of removing peanut from groundnut is to crackit with hand but when a large number of nuts have to be work on this method is of time consuming the prototype contains mainly of a main frame, a rubber tyre, a wire mesh, and a hopper. The rubber tyre used was a worn-out rubber tyre. Tyre treads were cut to prevent excessive slip during operation. Wheel rim and inner tube were also used. The purpose of using the tyre and concaveis narrowest at the midpoint of the concave and wider toward the inlet and outlet. This clearanceis adjustable in a vertical direction. An opening of the hopper is also adjustable so that feed ratecan be inner tube was to study the effect of tyre inflation on shelling.

Development and Performance Evaluation of a Groundnut Shelling Machine

The numerous uses of groundnuts have made groundnut shelling a lucrative business for processors. In the past, early researchers developed compact machines, that had no cleaning compartments and has high mechanical damage. These problems need to be solved to an appreciable point for optimum utilization of harvested groundnut with an affordable and more compact machine. For optimum use of harvested groundnuts, a groundnut shelling machine was designed, fabricated, and tested. The machine was fabricated with locally available materials and designed to shell and clean the groundnut. The main parts are the hopper, shelling chamber, shelling drum, motor, fan chamber, channel, and frame. The shelling is done by a metallic shelling drum with rough surfaces rubbing the groundnut on another perforated surface. This perforation allows the shelled groundnut and the chaffs to escape to the inclined channel where the fan blows air to push out the chaffs at the upper end while groundnut flows through the lower end. The channel and hopper are inclined at an angle of 29o to the horizontal to aid unshelled and shelled groundnut flow. The motor of 1 horsepower was revolving at 170 rpm, providing the shelling drum with a speed of 68 rpm to shell the groundnut. The machine was tested three times to obtain the shelling efficiency, cleaning efficiency, and material efficiency which was 97.94%, 56.2%, and 90.13% respectively. The shelling capacity and mechanical damage of the machine were 192.86kg/hr. and 9.87% respectively. The cost of the machine is estimated at 250 USD. The machine is highly efficient and can be adopted by farmers and groundnut processing industries for groundnut shelling operations.
