interdisciplinary phd in india

The School of Interdisciplinary Research (SIRe) was founded in October 2017 with the objective to create a platform for promoting research across different disciplines at IIT Delhi. It is envisioned that the school with its multi-disciplinary nature will not only accelerate its growth but would also enable to engage with faculty across other Institutes like AIIMS, JNU, NII etc. It is expected that over a period of time the School would be able to "seed" a number of interdisciplinary programs that do not exist today.

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Indian institute of technology madras, ph.d. programme.

The DoHSS has a vibrant research community. Ph.D. admissions are carried out twice a year, in January and July. The range of research topics encompasses fields as diverse as Advertising, Agricultural Policy, African/American/English/Indian Literature, Discourse Analysis, ELT, Economics & Econometrics, German Studies, Health Care, Modern Indian History, History of Science, Technology and Medicine, International Relations, Linguistics, Philosophy, Policy Studies, Science, Sociology, Theatre, Film and Media Studies, Technology and Development, and Science and Technology Education.

Research in HSS – the scholars’ perspective

As researchers from the Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences situated within the interstices of a technological institute, there is a constant dialogue between questions of technology with those of society and humanity. We as researchers keenly observe critique and act as an interface between these different paradigms. We believe that as a generation of curious Social Scientists and Liberal Humanists, the need of the hour is to establish consilience among diverse academic spaces. As a department, both the members of faculty and research scholars engage in a broad spectrum of research, which is largely interdisciplinary in nature. Being a part of a technological institute of national repute provides us with immense opportunities to witness and evaluate the interaction, transformation and synthesis that occur between technology, society and humanity.

The department of Humanities and Social Sciences, has scholars who pursue research activities in multiple fields including Language testing, Gandhian philosophy, Migration, Public Finance, Development Studies, Alternative education, Film Studies, Environmental evaluation, Sociopragmatics, Dalit and Minority education, European and Chinese studies, Speech and Communication, Ecocriticism, Deep Ecology, Health Economics, Diaspora and Cultural studies.

The department provides opportunities to scholars to work in areas outside of their specific discipline, thereby opening up avenues for innovative researches of interdisciplinary nature. The specially designed courses help the scholars to pursue their specific interests and decide on their research questions. This facilitates the study to evolve over a period of time and lays a sound foundation for the beginning of research. An evaluation of the scholar’s research progress at regular intervals not only facilitates his/her research but also prepares the scholar to engage with greater focus and rigour.

The scholars of the department have been awarded several reputed fellowships like The Fulbright Fellowship, The Erasmus Mundus Fellowship, The Jenesys Fellowship and have visited various countries, with opportunities to pursue research in world class Universities. The institute provides funds for research activities and extracurricular activities and several scholars have also availed these fellowships to attend international conferences during their program of study. The scholars have also published in reputed national and international journals.

The scholars of the department organize a weekly lecture series which serves as a meeting platform for both the faculty and the scholars. This forum allows scholars to share their research interests and outputs, both with members from within the department and also from other departments in the institute. The presentations are followed by discussions.

As a community the scholars also organize informal talks, film/book reviews, seminars and conferences including an annual theater production in collaboration with the post-graduate students of the department.

Being a research scholar in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences is both an enjoyable and enriching experience.

interdisciplinary phd in india

Students at CNS are exposed to cutting-edge neuroscience research through the CNS faculty, whose interests span the gamut from molecular to systems and cognitive neuroscience. Research at CNS is highly interdisciplinary and reflects the diverse backgrounds of the faculty themselves. The department offers world-class facilities and equipment together with a vibrant environment for research that consists of journal clubs, seminars and workshops.

The CNS PhD program is designed to provide a solid foundation of neuroscience for students with absolutely no prior background/experience in neuroscience. Incoming first-year PhD students are not pre-assigned to an advisor, but are instead asked to take the entire first semester to decide on the lab that they wish to join for their PhD. They are encouraged to talk to the faculty & students in each lab and do at least 3 lab rotations of their preference in order to make an informed decision. In addition, they are required to take two core courses offered by the CNS faculty: (1) Systems Neuroscience and (2) Molecular and Cellular Basis of Behaviour, and also choose from elective courses such as Cognitive Neuroscience and Developmental Neuroscience depending on their interests. These courses are aimed at forming a broad foundation of neuroscience knowledge for their research. They also help students understand and form a preference for the kind of neuroscience research they wish to undertake. Students make the final choice of their thesis advisor/laboratory by the end of the first semester.

PhD students are provided with a monthly stipend (per institute norms) and with accommodation in the student hostels at IISc. Campus life at IISc is extremely vibrant with a broad spectrum of cultural and sports activities.

Who can apply

Given the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience, we welcome students from diverse backgrounds. While we understand that students would have their domain knowledge specific to their individual exposure, we do expect students to possess some basic level neuroscience that reflects the motivation of students to pursue a PhD at CNS. Neuroscience is an inherently multi-disciplinary field, and the varied backgrounds of our PhD students provide an ideal setting for tackling neuroscience research questions from diverse perspectives.

Admissions to the Phd program are typically announced in January with an application deadline in March or April. Candidates are then shortlisted for the interviews which typically are held in May or June. The interview results are announced during that week itself. Selected PhD students join IISc in the first week of August.

We receive a large number of applications to join our PhD program each year. We shortlist candidates from each mode of admissions based on their marks and then call for interviews. We conduct two rounds of interviews for shortlisted candidates. Our interview questions are based on the premise that if you understand your own undergraduate and graduate subjects well, there’s a good chance that you will also understand fully the neuroscience that you are taught here. Apart from questions related to your undergraduate and graduate curriculum, we expect you to be comfortable with basic mathematics and analytical thinking. We also expect that you would have some basic knowledge of neuroscience, that reflects your motivation and interest in the topic! The interview results are typically announced within a day or two after they are completed.

To get a basic idea regarding what to expect at the CNS PhD interview, please watch this informative YouTube video by Navneet Shahi, PhD student in Prof Kavita Babu’s lab:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Ttzqvf2H8

PhD at School of Arts and Sciences

Access world standard laboratories and  research active academics to work on theoretical and interdisciplinary problems.

Access a thriving interdisciplinary research environment, state of the art laboratories and excellent faculty for an exceptional graduate education.

    School of Arts and Sciences

Ahmedabad University’s doctoral programmes involve completing graduate-level course work, passing a comprehensive examination, and successfully completing a dissertation. The School of Arts and Sciences offers doctoral programmes in Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physics. Details of each of the programmes is given below.

    Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences

The PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences (IHS) at Ahmedabad University is unique in India. Unlike conventional doctoral programmes, the framework of our IHS programme recognises the inherently interdisciplinary nature of knowledge production. The Programme integrates theoretical training with a focus on cutting-edge research methods, and allows for flexibility in designing interdisciplinary and disciplinary research projects. Students who wish to design an interdisciplinary PhD project are trained to pursue novel research questions that transcend disciplinary silos across the humanities and social sciences. The Programme is equally committed to cultivating disciplinary depth and also supports scholars who are interested in pursuing research in the following disciplines:

    • Political Science
    • Philosophy
    • Urban Studies
    • Anthropology and Sociology

We accept applications from full-time and part-time students. The Programme collaborates closely with faculty from other Schools and Centres at Ahmedabad University, whose work overlaps with the School of Arts and Sciences. We aim to prepare candidates for careers in academia, research and related practice-based careers of applied knowledge.

    Mathematical and Computational Sciences

The PhD programme in Mathematical and Computational Sciences at Ahmedabad University encourages students to study and conduct quality research in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, as well as the intersections of these subjects with other disciplines. The current research interests of the faculty involve core and interdisciplinary areas involving applications of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, for example, Biology, Physics, Ecology, Social Science, Engineering, and Management. This provides students with opportunities to explore a wide range of possibilities to select the problem they want to work on for their PhD thesis.

    Broad Research Areas:

    • Additive Combinatorics, Combinatorial Number Theory
    • Number Theory - Modular Forms, Automorphic Forms, and Automorphic Representations
    • Mathematical Physics and String Theory
    • Noncommutative Topology and Geometry
    • Quantum Computing
    • Data Science and Statistical research in Health and Climate
    • Extreme Value Statistics
    • Combinatorial Algorithms, Population Genetics, Statistical Computing, Bioinformatics
    • Mathematical Biology
    • High-Performance Scientific Computing
    • Edge and Fog Computing
    • Population-Based Bio-Inspired Algorithms

    Life Sciences

At the Biological and Life Sciences division, we study fundamental biological questions that span biomolecules, cells, organisms and ecosystems. The objectives of our programme are to nurture science and innovation through rigorous teaching and research, in areas that are central to human and environmental health. The educational objectives are to train students in modern biological techniques in molecular, cellular, biochemical, integrative and computational biology. We encourage multi-disciplinary thinking, cross-disciplinary interactions, and research collaborations with engineers, physicists, chemists, and faculty from the arts and humanities.

We not only celebrate knowledge creation but also its application, by facilitating engagement with industries and by promoting entrepreneurship via VentureStudio (the startup incubator at Ahmedabad University). Students are actively encouraged to break traditional disciplinary boundaries as they design their course work and research programme. Throughout the programme of study and research, we emphasise scholarship and provide an environment that is open to intellectual discussion. Our faculty are from diverse, often interdisciplinary, backgrounds, with many engaging in interactive research in overlapping areas that include, but are not limited to:

    • Species, Climate Warming, and Evolution
    • Neuroscience
    • Behavioral Ecology and Wildlife Biology
    • Molecular parasitology
    • Forensic Science and Toxicology
    • Animal Behaviour and Disease ecology
    • Systems Biology and Evolution
    • Cancer Biology
    • Structural  Biology/Biochemistry/Bioinformatics

At Ahmedabad University, we encourage students to think beyond the traditional borders of the conventional sub-areas of Physics as well as across other disciplines. While some of the current research interests of the faculty involve core areas of Physics, the research interests of faculty involve a significant interdisciplinary approach combining physics, biology and atmospheric sciences. This provides students with opportunities to explore diverse possibilities. The PhD course curriculum comprising of various electives reflects this thinking. PhD aspirants are encouraged to go through the research activities of the faculty members and have an open mind while deciding their research career. It may also be helpful for them to examine the PhD programmes in Life Sciences, and in Humanities and Social Sciences, which give a sense of the engaged, interdisciplinary and collaborative learning practices that are expected at the School of Arts and Sciences.

The PhD Programme in Physics is designed to prepare students for a career as a researcher, either in academia or in industry. Careers in industry will depend on the area of doctoral research and the extent of industrial research in that field. Through coursework and research projects that will expose students to research in different branches of Physics, students will be prepared for the expected and appropriate level of research in the PhD programme.

The Structure of the curriculum is as follows:

I  Courses in Physics and related areas 27 credits
    II Research Methodology 3 credits
    III Statistics 3 credits
