While the Hispanic Scholarship Fund provides awards to students of all majors, special consideration is given to those pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. 2. The Gates Scholarship

Amount: Full cost of attendance that is not covered by other financial aid and the expected family contribution, as determined by the FAFSA

The Gates Scholarship is a selective and prestigious last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Last-dollar scholarships are meant to cover any costs remaining after grants and institutional aid are applied. Every year, Gates Scholarship recipients are given the chance to reach their maximum potential through this generous award.

3. LNESC/NBCUniversal Media Scholarship

Amount: $5,000 (non-renewable)

• A college sophomore or junior enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university
• At least 18 years of age or older
• Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent
• Must be a U. S. Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, or have legal authorization to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future

Are you interested in a career in the entertainment industry? The LNESC/NBCUniversal Media Scholarship Program supports talented Latinx individuals pursuing careers in entertainment and media. Each year, ten rising sophomores and juniors receive an award of $5,000 toward their education. There is no particular major requirement for this scholarship.

4. TheDream.US National Scholarship

Amount: $33,000 for a bachelor’s degree at a partner college

• Are undocumented and came to the United States before November 1, 2017, and have continuously lived in the United States since then or have DACA or TPS
• Came to the United States before the age of 16 (if you were born in the U.S., you are not eligible for this scholarship)
• Have significant unmet financial need
• Have graduated or will graduate from a United States high school (or have earned or will earn a high school equivalency diploma) before Fall 2023
• Graduated or will graduate with a high school GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or have a cumulative college GPA of 2.5 or better
• Intend to enroll full-time in an associate or bachelor’s degree program at a Partner College in your state in the Fall of 2023 or Spring of 2024

TheDream.US National Scholarship offers a tuition award to undocumented immigrant students at a list of partner colleges. Applicants are assessed based on their academic performance and their commitment to community service. The scholarship committee also takes a particular interest in how applicants have overcome the barriers and challenges they have faced due to their undocumented status.

5. Chicana Latina Foundation Leadership and Scholarship Program

Amount: $1,500

Deadline: Passed, but will reopen on January 1, 2024

• Self-identify as a Chicana and/or Latina
• Be enrolled in an accredited college, university, or community college in one of the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, San Francisco, Sonoma, or Yolo
• Have lived at least two (2) years in one of the above Northern California counties at the time of application
• Be enrolled in a full-time college student (as defined by your institution) for the 2023-2024 Academic Year.

Every year, Chicana Latina Foundation selects 40-45 students to participate in their Leadership & Scholarship Program, which comes with a $1,500 scholarship. Selected students will attend all of CLF’s Leadership Institute sessions in August 2023 and February 2024, as well as the CLF Annual Award Dinner in January 2024. They must also complete 10 hours of outreach on their respective campuses as CLF Ambassadors during the application cycle.

6. Next Day Animations Illustrating Awesomeness Scholarship

Amount: 4 awards of $750

The Illustrating Awesomeness Scholarship is an opportunity that celebrates women and gender non-conforming individuals of color who are working to make the world a better place. The scholarship only accepts a certain number of applications a year, so apply early to ensure that you’ll be considered for this prize.

7. American Chemical Society Scholars Program

Amount: Up to $5,000

• U.S. citizens or legal permanent U.S. residents (please inquire via email if you have questions regarding asylum or DACA status)
• African descent or Black, Hispanic or Latina/Latino/Latinx, or Indigenous (e.g., Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Alaskan Native)

Do you dream of working in the sciences? The ACS supports current and aspiring chemical science or chemical technology majors from underrepresented ethnic groups. This scholarship for minority students is open to high school seniors, as well as college freshman, sophomores, or juniors. Students who are pre-med don’t qualify for the award.

8. Hispanic Scholarship Consortium Scholars Program

Amount: N/A

Deadline: April 30, 2023

Eligibility (Full list of criteria varies by scholarship):

• Be of Hispanic/Latino heritage
• Plan to enroll on a full-time basis in a certificate or associate, bachelor, master or doctoral degree program

The Hispanic Scholarship Consortium is a collection of various organizations and individuals, so scholarship amounts, eligibility criteria, and application requirements vary. Nevertheless, the HSC Scholars Program features renewable scholarships, multi-day leadership training experience, mentoring, membership in an extensive alumni network, and regular communication and guidance from trained professionals.

9. The Actuarial Foundation Actuarial Diversity Scholarship

Amount: $1,000-$4,000 ($1,000 in freshman year with an increase of $1,000 every subsequent year until senior year)

Deadline: June 1, 2023

• Must have at least one birth parent who is a member of one of the following minority groups: Black/African American, Latinx, Native North American, Pacific Islander
• Enrolling or enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at a U.S.-accredited educational institution
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), emphasis on math or actuarial courses
• Entering college freshmen must have a minimum ACT math score of 28 or SAT math score of 620

The Actuarial Foundation recognizes that there is a diversity challenge in the actuarial profession. There are dramatic disparities in career attainment for minorities. Research has found that Latinx individuals make up only 1.9% of the Society of Actuaries and 1.8% Casualty Actuarial Society. The Actuarial Diversity Scholarship is meant to increase opportunities for students who are part of groups historically underrepresented in the industry.

10. BLM² Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: July 3, 2023

• Be a minority (e.g., African American, Hispanic, Asian or Pacific American, or Alaska Native).
• Be a graduating high school senior in the year of the award
• Plan to attend an accredited college or university within the United States
• Must be a permanent US Citizen

The BLM² Scholarship Foundation was established in 2014 to help minority high school seniors pursue higher education. Their Scholarship Program is designed to address the financial needs of minority college students and award outstanding high school graduates—who plan to earn a baccalaureate degree from an accredited, four-year college or university—with financial assistance.

11. José Martí Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund

Amount: $2,000 annually

• Submit a completed, error-free Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA)
• Be of Spanish culture, born in or having a natural parent who was born in either Mexico or a Hispanic country of the Caribbean, Central or South America, regardless of race. Students of the following countries are not considered for an evaluation of this scholarship: Brazil, Spain, and Haiti.
• Minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Demonstrate a minimum of $2,000 in financial need by timely completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in time to be processed error-free by the U.S. Department of Education on or before May 15, 2023.
• Be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. A student’s residency and citizenship status are determined by the postsecondary institution.
• Not owe a repayment or be in default under any state or federal grant, loan, or scholarship program unless satisfactory arrangements to repay have been made
• Not have previously earned a baccalaureate degree
• Enroll as a degree-seeking student at an eligible postsecondary institution and enroll each academic term for a minimum of 12 credit hours for undergraduate study or 9 credit hours for graduate study

Application Requirement: Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA)

Named for Cuban poet and national hero, José Martí, the José Martí Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund is a need-based merit scholarship that provides financial assistance to eligible students of Hispanic origin who will attend Florida public or eligible private institutions. 

Applicants are ranked first by highest need as determined by the FAFSA, second by the highest GPA, and third by application submission date. First priority is given to renewal applicants.

12. McDonald’s HACER National Scholarship

Amount: Up to $100,000

Deadline: Application opens Fall 2023

• Younger than 21 years old
• Legal U.S. resident or a DREAMer/DACA recipient
• High school seniors with a minimum 2.8 GPA who are eligible to attend a two- or four-year college or university with a full-time course of study
• Must disclose other scholarship programs that you’ve applied for
• Will enroll in and attend an accredited institution in the academic year after your selection (verification needed, as scholarship funds are paid directly to the schools)
• Have at least one parent of Hispanic heritage
• Personal statement

This award celebrates talented young people with at least one parent of Hispanic descent. To be competitive, students should have performed well academically despite limited access to educational resources. Scholarships start at $5,000 for Tier 3 recipients. Tier 2 recipients will receive $10,000 or $20,000, and Tier 1 recipients are awarded up to $100,000.

13. Café Bustelo El Café del Futuro Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

• Full-time undergraduate or graduate students of Latino descent
• Open to all majors
• Must be 18 years or older
• Currently enrolled at a HACU-member institution within the United States, D.C., and Puerto Rico
• Internet access and a valid e-mail address are required to apply
• 800-word essay about your Latino heritage

Through this generous scholarship award, Café Bustelo is investing in the Latino community. This scholarship fund is intended to help those who are seeking better futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. 

College students with a passion for learning and community involvement are asked to write an essay (in English or Spanish) detailing how their heritage, family, and community have impacted their desire and motivation to obtain a college degree, how they plan to give back to their community, and what they intend to accomplish with their degree.

14. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Inclusion Scholarship

Amount: $10,000

• Pursuing a career in any aspect of the television industry
• Identify as Black, indigenous, or a person of color

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS)—the organization that created the Emmy Awards—is dedicated to the advancement of television and related electronic media. To that end, they award scholarships to high school seniors intending to pursue a communications degree with an emphasis on any aspect of the television industry.

The Inclusion Scholarship is awarded to students pursuing careers in the television industry who identify as Black, indigenous, or a person of color.

15. Prospanica Scholarship Program

• Be a United States citizen, legal permanent resident, or DACA recipient
• Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) OR have a minimum 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) in combination with work experience during that time
• Have a Prospanica membership – Member ID required. Prospanica is offering a 50% discount on student membership during the preliminary round, using code 2023SCHOLAR.
• Be enrolled or planning to enroll in a postgraduate (Master’s or PhD) or undergraduate program in an accredited university business school (in the U.S. or Puerto Rico). If applying for the undergraduate awards, the applicant must currently be a college sophomore or higher.

Prospanica was founded to empower and enable Hispanic professionals to achieve their full potential—educationally, economically, and socially. To help achieve this goal, they offer scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students who intend to make meaningful contributions to society. Their scholarship program is seeking the next generation of agents of change who will help to uplift the entire Hispanic community.

16. Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards

• Be currently enrolled in high school and graduating in the spring of 2023
• Must have a minimum unweighted 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or 7.5 on a 10.0 scale
• Must enroll at an accredited higher education institution in 2023-2024

The Youth Awards, founded in 1998 by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, celebrates high-achieving Latino high school seniors for their excellence in the classroom and the community.

Students who work in various categories are recognized. These categories include Business & Entrepreneurship, Community Service, Education, Engineering, Green Sustainability, Healthcare & Science, Media & Entertainment, Public Service & Social Justice, and Technology. Awardees receive a one-time grant to fund their college education or to fund a community service project that addresses a social issue.

17. Study Abroad Scholarship in BiH for American Minority Students

Amount: $500-$2,000

• Be an American undergraduate or graduate student
• Be of African American, Hispanic American, or Native American descent
• Be accepted into a university program in Bosnia and Herzegovina, enroll in a university-accredited language program, or participate in a faculty-led study tour to Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) has designated Bosnia and Herzegovina as a study abroad destination under its TCA Study Abroad Scholarship Program for American Minority Students. Through this program, TCA provides up to 100 scholarships—of $500 to $2,000—per year to eligible American undergraduate and graduate minority students who are accepted to study for a semester or a year at a university in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

18. LULAC National Scholarship Fund

Amount: Up to $2,000

Deadline: Application opens February 2024

• U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or DACA
• Must have applied to or be enrolled as a full-time student in a college or university, including 2-year colleges, or vocational schools that lead to an associate’s degree. Graduate students must have applied to or be enrolled as a part-time student in a college or university.
• Students will not be eligible for a scholarship if related to a scholarship committee member, the Council President, or an individual contributor to the local funds of the Council
• Participating states will be made available on the website
• Completed and signed LNSF application form. LNSF applications must be mailed or emailed directly to a participating LULAC Council by March 31

The LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) was created to help youth in underserved communities realize their dreams of attending college. LNSF is a partnership between grassroots advocates and big corporations that is intended to empower the Latino community through educational funding. The scholarship’s rigorous selection process ensures that the level of excellence recipients attain remains consistent.

19. LNESC/ExxonMobil Engineering Scholarship

Amount: One national scholarship of $20,000; 12 local scholarships of $2,000

The product of a partnership between the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) and the ExxonMobil Foundation, the ExxonMobil Engineering Scholarship Program is intended to assist outstanding Hispanic college freshmen who plan to pursue a degree in engineering at U.S. post-secondary institutions.

One national scholarship of $20,000, paid over four years, and twelve $2,000 local scholarships will be awarded to qualified high school seniors and college freshmen.

20. American Meteorological Society Scholarship for Underserved Communities

Amount: $6,000 for two years ($3,000 per year)

• U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status.
• Students who will be entering their freshman year of college in the fall of 2023 are eligible to apply.
• Students must plan to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. Marine Biology is not eligible.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Students eligible to apply for the AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities may also apply to the AMS Freshman Scholarship Program but can only accept one scholarship if selected for both.

The AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities awards funding to students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is committed to diversity in the meteorological sciences. They espouse core values of diversity, inclusion, and equity across all aspects of the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences.

21. La Unidad Latina Foundation Scholarships for Undergraduate and Graduate Latino Students

• Minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 GPA scale
• Enrolled on a full-time basis, in a bachelor’s program at an accredited four-year college or university. Graduates of two-year, community college students who are starting at a four-year college no later than August 2023 are also eligible to apply.
• At least one complete semester of full-time study
• Must reside in the United States at the time of application
• Residential criteria for NYS regional scholarship: Enrolled at a college or university in New York State (out-of-state residents may apply) or have a primary address in New York and attend a college or university out of state (i.e. eligible if family resides in NYS and you return to NYS for winter/spring/summer break)
• Residential criteria for GLC Mateo Gomez Memorial Scholarship: Enrolled at any college or university in the United States with a plan to pursue a study abroad, internship, or other international experience that provides exposure to Latin American culture
• 2-year, community college applicants starting at 4-year college must provide an acceptance letter from the 4-year college or university the applicant plans to attend
• Letter of recommendation describing student leadership and commitment to civic service (maximum of 250 words)
• GLC Mateo Gomez Memorial Scholarship applicants must submit a letter of approval to a study abroad or international work program. If a letter of approval is not available, then a letter on college or university letterhead from your study abroad office indicating your intent to study or work abroad.

La Unidad Latina Foundation currently offers two scholarships—one for students in New York State and one for students who intend to have an international experience (including study abroad and internships) that provides exposure to Latin American culture.

Unlike many programs, this scholarship is open to almost all fields of study and degree types. The award welcomes applicants pursuing a bachelor’s degree, a Master of Arts degree, a Master of Science degree, a Master of Public Administration/Policy degree, a Master of Social Work degree, a Master of Education degree, a Master of Divinity degree, and PhDs.

22. American Association of School Personnel Administrators Leon Bradley Scholarship Program

Amount: $3,500

Funded by The American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA), the 

Leon Bradley Scholarship Program awards up to two undergraduate scholarships annually. In addition to supporting minority students on their journey to becoming teachers, the program strives to ensure that all students have access to instructors from different races and ethnic backgrounds. Graduate students seeking administrative credentials may also qualify for support.

Whether you’re targeting general college grants or scholarships for Hispanic women, it’s important to do your homework. Here are some of our top tips for increasing your chances of securing a scholarship.

1. Start early

As a high school student, it’s never too early to start seeking out options for scholarships. With college tuition prices on the rise, students need all the funding they can get. Because winning scholarships is a numbers game, it’s wise to apply to as many scholarships as you can, prioritizing those that you have a good chance of securing. Look for scholarships with similar requirements, so you can limit any extra work you have to do.

2. Find a support system

Applying for scholarships can be just as arduous as applying to colleges. Therefore, it’s important to have a good support system in place to help you through the process. While friends and family can be great for moral support, you might want to go outside your inner circle by consulting teachers and guidance counselors. Along with writing recommendations if necessary, these professionals can advise you on application questions and even read over your essays and give you pointers.

3. Check your work

No matter how brilliant your essay is , if it’s full of grammatical errors, misspellings, and typos, you will not be seriously considered for a scholarship. Before sending in your application package, be sure to read over every section and answer to identify mistakes and to make sure there’s nothing you missed. If proofreading isn’t your strong suit, think about having a trusted pal look over your documents as well.

4. Apply to a mix of larger and smaller awards

Scholarship committees—especially those working for programs that have been running for a long time—already have an idea of who and what they’re looking for. If the award is for a qualified educational non-tuition expense, we will work with the winner directly to distribute the award and make sure it goes towards qualified expenses.

Before we award the scholarship, the winner will be required to confirm their academic enrollment status. Depending on the circumstances, verification of Student ID and/or their most recent transcript will be required.

The Hispanic Empowerment No-Essay Scholarship is a $750 scholarship open to undergraduate and high school senior students.

About the Scholarship

Access to quality education is a human right. And until that access is equally distributed, there's work to be done. Students who are Hispanic make up more than a fifth of the total student population attending universities and colleges within the US. Around 60% of them will require financial aid and often are financially disadvantaged compared to their peers from other racial groups.

The Hispanic Empowerment No-Essay Scholarship is meant to encourage diversity in academia. This award will help current or aspiring students who are Hispanic pay their tuition or student loans.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarship supports the education efforts of students with Hispanic heritage. High school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate students are welcome to apply.

Given in honor of the groundbreaking presence of Jackie Robinson, this scholarship funds four years of higher education for students of color. The Jackie Robinson Scholarship seeks to reward students who have demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to community service. Students who are selected for this scholarship program are also given the opportunity to attend an annual leadership conference in New York City sponsored by the foundation.

GFOA provides a variety of scholarships, including the Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship to provide funding opportunities for exceptional minority students. Students must be preparing to lead a career in government finance to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Provider : National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

Requirements : 

• Resident of San Diego, Las Vegas, Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, or Palm Springs
• Hispanic or Latino
• Planning to major in radio, television, or digital communications

The Univision NATAS Scholarship supports graduating high school seniors of Hispanic descent who want to study digital communications, with a focus on any aspect of the television industry.   

Amount: $500 to $5,000

Provider: Hispanic Scholarship Fund

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for high school students 
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate and graduate students
• U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, DACA recipient, or eligible non-citizen
• Plan to enroll full-time in a not-for-profit, four-year university, or graduate school in the U.S., for the upcoming academic year

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund provides funding for college opportunities for students of Hispanic heritage. These are merit-based scholarships, ranging from $500 to $5,000, with an emphasis on STEM majors.

Amount: $5,000

• U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident 
• Enrolled full-time in a college or university
• College sophomore or juniors over the age of 18 
• Career interest in the media and entertainment industry

The NBCUniversal/LNESC Scholarship helps fund the education of undergraduate Latino students pursuing a degree in the media and entertainment industry. The scholarship is divided into two disbursements of $2,500 for the fall and spring.

Provider: Cafe Bustelo

Requirements:

• Full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at a Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) member institution within the U.S., D.C. and Puerto Rico
• 18 years or older 

The El Café Bustelo Scholarship aims to invest in the Latino community by awarding those who seek better futures for themselves, their families and their communities. They’re looking for motivated college students with a passion for community involvement and furthering their education. Since the scholarship began in 2014, $550,000 in college funds have been awarded to 110 Latino students nationwide through the partnership.

Amount: Up to $2,000

• U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or DACA recipient
• Planning to or currently enrolled full-time as an undergraduate or graduate student, including 2 year colleges or vocational schools. 
• Cannot be related to a scholarship committee member, the Council President, or an individual contributor to the local funds of the Council
• Residing in one of the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin

LNESC and LULAC partnered to establish the LULAC National Scholarship Fund to assist youth in underserved communities. Every dollar raised by local LULAC Councils will be matched by corporate partners secured by LNESC, which increases the scholarship award amount. Candidates apply for this scholarship via their local area LULAC council. 

Amount: From $2,000 to $5,000

Provider: Prospanica

Requirements: The eligibility for the Prospanica Foundation Scholarships depends upon meeting the following requirements: 

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for full-time students
• Minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for students with two years of full-time work experience
• Hispanic/Latino
• Enrolled or planning to enroll in a postgraduate or undergraduate program in a university business school (in the United States or Puerto Rico)
• Undergrads must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors
• Prospanica membership 

The Prospanica Foundation funds the education of undergraduate and graduate students in the Hispanic community who aim to make meaningful contributions to the community and reach their full educational potential. Scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $5,000.

Provider: Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)

• Minimum GPA of 2.75
• Pursuing a STEM degree 
• Attending a program full-time in the U.S. or Puerto Rico
• Active SHPE member

* Some sponsored scholarships may have additional requirements or specifications; these requirements will be listed on the ScholarSHPE application page. ScholarshipSHPE awards more than 200 scholarships totalling over $1,000,000 to provide scholarships for Hispanic students pursuing a STEM degree. They aim to help Hispanic students complete their bachelor’s degree by defraying the cost of college tuition.

Amount: Up to $5,000 per academic year

Provider: American Chemical Society

• African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian
• Majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical technology, or another chemistry-related science 
• Planning to pursue a career in a chemistry or another related field 

The ACS Scholars Program provides financial aid to underrepresented minority students who are majoring in chemistry-related disciplines. About 350 students receive over $1 million in scholarship awards per academic year. More than 3,500 students to date have received college funding from the program. 

Amount: Up to $4,000

Provider: The Actuarial Foundation

• At least one birth parent who is Black/African American, Hispanic, Native North American, or Pacific Islander
• Pursuing a career in the actuarial profession

The Actuarial Foundation provides scholarship awards of $1,000-$4,000 for students from at least one of the following minority groups: Black/African American, Hispanic, Native North American, and Pacific Islander. The Actuarial Diversity Scholarship recognizes achievements of undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree in the actuarial profession, an industry related to asset management and liability management.

Amount: $3,500

Provider: Hispanic Heritage Foundation

• Hispanic (includes Spain, Brazil, Philippines)
• Plans to enroll at an accredited higher education institution this upcoming academic year
• Graduating high school senior 

The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards honors Latino high school seniors who demonstrate involvement in their community and an exceptional academic record. Students are recognized in the following categories: Business & Entrepreneurship, Community Service, Education, Healthcare & Science, Media & Entertainment, and Technology & Engineering. The Youth Awards recognizes students to provide a one-time grant for their college education, or to fund a community service effort to help position students as community leaders.

Provider: American Library Association (ALA)

• American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern/North African, and/or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander
• U.S. or Canadian citizen
• Attending an ALA-accredited graduate program in library and information studies

The Spectrum Scholarship Program awards minority students to assist them with obtaining a graduate degree, as well as leadership positions within ALA. They encourage students who are pursuing a graduate degree in library and information studies, and may receive additional benefits, such as a complimentary, one-year student ALA membership.

Amount: Up to $10,000

Provider: American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

• MInimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
• Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino; Native American; Pacific Islander; or Asian American
• Enrolled in a undergraduate or graduate program in the U.S. or its territories
• Majoring in accounting or an accounting-related major
• Planning to pursue the CPA licensure but not presently be a CPA
• Completed at least 30 semester hours of coursework, including at least 6 semester hours in accounting

One of many AICPA Legacy Scholarships, the AICPA Scholarship Award for Minority Accounting Students focuses on increasing the presence of ethnically-diverse CPA professionals. Students will submit one scholarship application to be evaluated for all awards they’re eligible for in the program.

Provider: American Bus Association Foundation

• Planning to attend or enrolled in an accredited university
• Undergraduate or graduate student 
• Majoring in a subject related to the travel and tourism industry 
• Demonstrate diversity

The ABA Diversity Scholarship awards traditionally underrepresented groups to help promote inclusion in management and operation ranks of the transportation, travel, and tourism industry.

Amount: $6,000

Provider: American Meteorological Society

• Plan to pursue a career in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences

The AMS Minority Scholarships provide scholarship opportunities to minority students who are often underrepresented in the sciences. Members of the American Meteorological Society 100th Anniversary Program donate to the scholarship to help provide benefits to a diverse community and promote inclusion in atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences.

Award: Varies

Provider: Florida Fund for Minority Teachers

• Resident of Florida
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
• African American/Black, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Native American/Alaska Native, or Hispanic/Latino 
• Admission into a teaching program at an FFMT participating university
• College Junior
• Have completed 60 credits or AA degree but no more than 18 hours of upper division education courses

The Florida Fund for Minority Teachers grants scholarships to African American/Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino, or Asian American/Pacific Islander students who have been accepted into a qualifying teacher education program in the state of Florida. 

After graduation, Minority Teacher Education Scholarship recipients are required to teach one year in a Florida public school for each year they received the scholarship. There they can receive additional mentoring from current staff.

Amount: $4,000

Provider: Indiana Commission for Higher Education

• Resident of Indiana
• Minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
• Full-time enrollment status at an accredited university in Indiana
• Majoring or minoring in education or another related field
• Commit to teaching in Indiana for at least three years upon graduation

With the dream of diversifying leadership in Indiana classrooms, the William A. Crawford Minority Teacher Scholarship provides $4,000 to African American or Hispanic students interested in majoring or minoring in elementary, secondary, or special education.

Amount: $7,500

Provider: Illinois Student Assistance Commission

• Resident of Illinois
• African American/Black, Hispanic American, Asian American or Native American 
• High school graduate or GED recipient 
• Planning to teach at a non-profit school in Illinois following graduation

The MTI Scholarship Program awards Illinois students who plan to teach within the state. Students must plan to teach at a nonprofit Illinois public, private or parochial preschool, elementary school, or secondary school in which the enrolled students include no less than 30 percent of African American/Black, Hispanic American, Asian American or Native American origin.

Amount: $2,000

Provider: Florida Department of Education

• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Full-time student status
• Completed the FAFSA

Florida students who were born in, or who have parents who were born in, Mexico, Spain, or a Hispanic country of the Caribbean, South America, or Central America are eligible to apply for this $2,000 scholarship, which grants $1,000 per semester. The Jose Marti Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund can provide funding for a maximum of four semesters or six quarters to eligible graduate students.

• Planning to enroll full-time in a college or university
• Minimum ACT score of 20 or minimum SAT score of 1050

The Ford Driving Dreams Scholarship Program asks students, “What Drives Your Dream?” to encourage students to pursue a college degree. Students attending specific schools in North Texas and school districts in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio are eligible to apply for this scholarship award.

Provider: State of Kansas

• Resident of Kansas
• Full-time enrollment at a Kansas community college or four-year university
• Minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 990
• High school rank in the upper 33% of one’s class
• Completion of Kansas Scholars Curriculum Selection by National Merit Corporation in any category  
• Selection by College Board as a Hispanic Scholar 

In an effort to promote diversity and education, the Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship grants up to $1,850 per year to African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic students. Candidates should demonstrate financial need and academic achievement.

Amount: Up to $2,500

Provider: Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

• Resident of Pennsylvania in one of the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Westmoreland or Washington County
• One parent of Hispanic ancestry (defined as one Hispanic grandparent)

The PMAHCC Foundation Scholarship Program provides grants ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 to students. Grant amounts are evaluated based on individual need or merit for each applicant.

Amount: Up to $8,500

Provider: NASA and the Commonwealth of Virginia contributions

• Resident of Virginia
• Enrolled as a full-time student at one of the five Virginia Space Grant Consortium member institutions: Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Old Dominion University, The College of William and Mary, or Hampton University
• Completed two years of a STEM undergraduate program and be classified as a junior or senior for the upcoming academic year 

The VSGC Undergraduate STEM Research Scholarship Program awards one-year, non-renewable scholarships. It aims to promote undergraduate STEM research and encourage participation in STEM-related careers with underrepresented minorities, females, and students with disabilities.

Amount: Up to $5,000

Provider: The Cleveland Foundation

• Resident of Ohio
• African-American or Hispanic
• Enrolled or currently attending a two or four year educational institution in Ohio for a minimum of 6 credit hours/term or a vocational training program in Ohio
• Graduate of a high school in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District or a Catholic school in the Greater Cleveland area

The ALCOA Fund Scholarship aims to offer scholarship opportunities for underserved and underrepresented populations. These students must be graduates of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District or a Catholic school in Greater Cleveland (preferably Cuyahoga County). As long as the funds are available and the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements, this is a scholarship award that can be renewed annually for up to 4 years.

Provider: Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina

• African American, Hispanic American, or Native American 
• Undergraduate or graduate students 

Minority students interested in learning about the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. The awards for the Study Abroad Scholarship in BiH for American Minority Students range from $500 to $2,000 to help students study abroad for one semester.

Provider : Family & Friends of Lauren Douglass

• Resident of North Carolina
• Black, Hispanic, American Indian or Alaskan Native
• Majoring in nursing 

The Be The Change Minority Nursing Scholarship will award $1000 each to 5 deserving students from underrepresented backgrounds in nursing. Recipients must be current or admitted nursing students attending institutions in North Carolina.

Amount: Up to $500

• Resident of Puerto Rico
• Enrolled full-time at a college or university

The Macy’s Emergency Scholarship Fund awards students who are facing economic hardship and immediate monetary need. Emergency financial need may include but is not limited to a change in family income, job loss, burglary, or natural disaster.

Macy’s Emergency Scholarship Funds are non-renewable and applicants cannot be recipients of other LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) Scholarships at the time of application. Award amounts vary based on need, but should not exceed $500.

Provider : Oregon Community Foundation

• Resident of Oregon
• Attend community college in Oregon at least part-time
• Graduate of an Oregonian high school or completed a GED in the state

The Institute for Cultural Initiatives Scholarship supports bi-lingual (Spanish/English) Latino students attending a community college in Oregon, and the award may be renewed for up to four years (but the winner must re-apply).

Provider: Grand Rapids Community Foundation

• Resident of Kent County, Michigan
• African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander
• Attending a non-profit public or private college/university in West Michigan 
• Majoring in Fine Arts including all visual and performing art forms
• Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA

Students may submit one application for the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids Minority Scholarship and be considered for more than 500 scholarships through the Grand Rapids Community Foundation.

Provider: HACU

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident 
• Apply to/accepted to and enroll in a summer, semester or academic year IES Abroad program
• Demonstrate financial need
• Priority will be given to first generation college students and/or Federal Pell Grant recipients

The HAC Abroad Scholarship provides funding opportunities for students currently attending a Hispanic-Serving Institution in the spring , summer or fall . The institution must be a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities.

Provider: Lancôme and NAACP

• Black or Person of Color 
• Plan to enroll in four year academic institution
• Identify as female
• Member of NAACP
• Participant in an active ACT-SO program via NAACP

The Write Her Future Scholarship is a great opportunity for female students of color with dreams of obtaining an undergraduate degree. If this sounds like you, be sure to join the NAACP and participate in one of their ACT-SO programs. This specific scholarship award is substantial and can make a difference in your college fund.

Provider: Latino Community Credit Union

• Enrolled in any college or technical school in the U.S.
• Demonstrate qualities of distinguished character and leadership
• Member of LCCU

Extra consideration is given to students and/or their families who use the LCCU as their primary financial institution. The Latino Community Credit Union Scholarship has awarded over $455,000 in scholarships since 2016.

Provider: PwC Charitable Foundation

• Black, Latinx, Native American, Native Alaskan, and Southeast Asian
• Enrolled in or recently completed (within last year) a technical certification
• High School graduate over the age of 18 

The Dream Corps TECH Scholarship Fund is a great opportunity for students from underrepresented groups to add to their college fund! This specific scholarship is geared towards students with an interest in tech. If you’re pursuing or have recently completed a technical certification, check out this award.

If you’re a high school senior of Hispanic or Latinx heritage, you'll definitely want to learn more about the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) . With more than 150 types of scholarships available through this program, there’s a lot to learn—and a lot to win!

When you submit an HSF award scholarship, you’re actually submitting yourself for consideration for many different awards (much like when you submit a FAFSA ). I’ll talk about all the details you’ll need to take into consideration before submitting your own application for Hispanic scholarships. Then, we'll take a look at application strategies for current high school seniors.

What Is a Hispanic Scholarship Fund Award?

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is a large organization that oversees many scholarship programs. It has partnerships with both philanthropic and corporate organizations to fund scholarships for Hispanic students.

Since 1975, HSF has awarded more than $675 million in scholarship money, with 5,100+ new scholarships awarded each year . Overall, it's a real powerhouse of an organization, which aims to ensure that every Hispanic household in the US has at least one college graduate.

In essence, there's no single HSF award; instead, HSF offers many different scholarships, each with its own funding sources, eligibility requirements, and award amounts. The great thing about HSF is that you only have to submit one application every year to be considered for all available scholarships .

These scholarships are merit-based,  meaning they're awarded based on academic and personal achievements, not financial need; that said, financial need is taken into consideration when determining the amount of the award.

Most awards are not renewable —you only receive one annual award amount. As I mentioned above, however, you can submit an HSF scholarship application every year. Re-submitting applications in the future may help your chances of getting more scholarship funding . HSF really values building a community and slightly favors past award winners when reviewing scholarship applications.

HSF award amounts vary from $500 to as high as $5,000, but the specific amount you could win will vary depending on your financial need.

HSF scholarships offer more than just funding for school, though. Here's a list of the benefits that come along with an HSF award :

• Career center platform to help you look for jobs and internships
• Mentor match program
• Online course system to augment your normal college studies
• HSF newsletter with extracurricular and volunteer opportunities
• HSF events and programs, such as Latinos United and Networking for Advancement (LUNA) and National Leadership Conference (NLC)
• An extra "point" on future HSF scholarship applications—if you've won an HSF scholarship in the past, you'll be more likely to win one in the future

All in all, an HSF award is a really great resource in more ways than one. Because one application means you'll be considered for countless scholarships, it's well worth your time to apply for an HSF award . So let's get started!

How to Know If You're Eligible for an HSF Scholarship

In order to receive an HSF award, you must meet all of the following eligibility requirements :

• Be of Hispanic heritage (defined as being at least 1/4 Hispanic or Latino)
• Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (for high school students)
• Have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale (for college and graduate students)
• Plan to enroll full-time at an accredited nonprofit four-year university or graduate school during the fall of the scholarship cycle year
• Be a US citizen, permanent legal resident, DACA, or eligible non-citizen as defined by the FAFSA
• Complete the FAFSA
• Complete the State Dream Act financial aid application, if applicable

Students of all majors are considered, although there is an emphasis on STEM fields . This is likely because students of Hispanic heritage are especially underrepresented in the fields of math, science, technology, and engineering.

What Do You Need to Apply for an HSF Scholarship?

Before you start working on your Hispanic Scholarship Fund application, it'd be wise to gather the following information and reports.

To complete your HSF application, you'll need the following materials:

• Your FAFSA and Student Aid Report—get complete instructions here
• School transcripts —you can get these from your guidance counselor
• Enrollment verification from your school—check with the admissions office about this
• Financial aid award letter from the college you're enrolling in—the HSF uses this to determine your award amount but not whether you receive a scholarship
• Letters of recommendation —you'll need at least one academic recommender, but additional writers can be academic or non-academic

Your school guidance counselor should be able to help you gather the paperwork you need.

How Do You Submit an HSF Application?

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund application opens January 1  each year and typically closes mid-February. The 2023-24 cycle is currently underway, and awards will be disbursed sometime in December 2023. For the 2024-25 scholarships, the application is estimated to open January 1, 2024, and close February 15, 2024.

By submitting just one application, you'll be considered for a variety of awards. However, although you might be eligible to receive multiple scholarships, you can only be awarded one scholarship per year. Remember that you are encouraged to submit an HSF scholarship application every year you're in school.

After you submit an HSF scholarship application, you'll learn whether you won an award via email in June or July.

How May You Use Hispanic Scholarship Fund Award Money?

HSF scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books, fees, and other academic expenses. You can also use the award money to pay for room, board, and transportation expenses.

How to Raise Your Chances of Winning a Hispanic Scholarship Fund Award

HSF scholarships are highly competitive; unfortunately, not all qualified applicants receive a scholarship each year. It’s important, then, that you dedicate yourself fully to the application process if you’re serious about trying to get an HSF award.

I'll address some long- and short-term strategies to help you win an HSF scholarship here.

Long-Term Considerations

As you prepare for HSF scholarship applications, keep in mind that students are evaluated on the following criteria:

• Academic achievement
• Personal strengths
• Commitment to giving back to their communities

HSF also strives to help students achieve their goals, particularly in areas in which Hispanic/Latino students are underrepresented, namely STEM fields .

You'll be considered an even stronger applicant if you plan on going into science, tech, engineering, or mathematics.

You should also note that HSF scholarships are looking for students who are well rounded . In other words, they would prefer a student with a slightly lower GPA and an impressive resume to a student with a perfect GPA and no extracurricular activities.

Nevertheless, the strongest HSF applicant will demonstrate both academic excellence and involvement in extracurricular activities .

If you're a younger high school student, you can start working on making yourself a stronger applicant, both for scholarships and college applications (there tends to be a lot of overlap).

Here are three things that can make applicants more competitive , according to HSF.

#1: Taking Honors or Advanced Classes

This speaks to your academic achievement. Students who challenge themselves with a more difficult course load will seem more ambitious and tenacious.

#2: Consistent Involvement in Extracurricular or Volunteer Activities

Depending on what activities you’re involved in, your participation in extracurriculars/volunteer activities can speak to all the qualities that applicants are evaluated for.

• Academic achievement: Activities such as Science Olympiad , Mock Trial, and Debate can augment what you’re already doing in class. Basically, participation demonstrates intellectual curiosity.
• Personal strengths : Your success in various activities/organizations will speak to your personal strengths. If you win any awards, honors, or accolades through your participation in extracurriculars, these will get you brownie points on applications.
• Leadership : If you hold an authoritative role as a club officer, or if you started a club or volunteer organization, you’ll prove that you are a strong and effective leader.
• Commitment to giving back to the community : Generally, any volunteer or school-related activity will demonstrate a commitment to your community.

#3: Demonstrating Experiences That Have Contributed to Your Personal Growth

You might be questioning what exactly this point is supposed to mean. After all, experiences that contribute to personal growth will be different for everyone.

In general, though, any experience that challenges you or forces you out of your comfort zone will contribute to your growth .

Here are some examples of how you can demonstrate these types of experiences in the domains relevant to the HSF application:

• Academics : Again, difficult coursework, especially in your weaker subject areas, will challenge you intellectually. If you approach the challenge productively by seeking extra help from teachers and keeping up with your work, you’ll come across as a strong applicant. Letters of recommendation from appropriate teachers can really shed light on whether you seek out challenging academic experiences.
• Leadership: No one starts off as a leader in any club or activity; you have to work your way up by proving yourself and earning respect over time. Volunteer to take on new and challenging learning experiences in your extracurriculars. You can do this by leading a group, proposing an independent learning project, or even starting your own club or organization.
• Commitment to giving back to your community: How do you demonstrate commitment or passion to giving back? You do more than what’s required or expected of you. Do you feel that your school or community is missing a particular type of service group? For example, maybe you’ve noticed that the younger kids in your school community don’t have access to tutors or mentors for homework help, and you have a passion for education and teaching. This would be a great opportunity to give back to your community while also demonstrating real initiative and leadership.

Take every opportunity to describe personal growth and development - scholarships (and colleges) love to see this upwards trajectory.

Sometimes, leadership and community commitment go formally unrecognized. Although I know it’s difficult for some students to toot their own horns, formal awards, honors, and accolades can really help you boost scholarship and college applications.

Work on taking the above advice over the long term, but also try to actively seek out award opportunities in your community . You can do this by checking with your school's guidance counselor or by doing a Google search for any awards in your area.

Short-Term Considerations

If you're ready to start working on your applications, this section will be especially helpful. I'll break down the best ways to approach each part of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund application so you can optimize your chances of winning an award.

The actual essay prompts for the 2024-25 HSF scholarship application aren't available yet, but the HSF lists ideas for personal statements that will likely overlap with its own application essays.

You can use the following prompts to brainstorm before you have access to the actual application in January:

• What are your goals? Why did you choose these goals?
• Why did you choose to apply for HSF fund scholarships?
• What are your values and philosophy about education? Why?
• Are there any accomplishments (either in or out of school) that you're particularly proud of? What have you learned from these experiences?
• Do you have a time-management system? What is it?
• How do you schedule your time to include both academic and social activities?
• What difficulties or disadvantages have you faced in your life, and how have you overcome them? What is one area in which you are weak, and how have you or do you plan to overcome this weakness?
• Identify a leadership experience and talk about the most important lessons of the position and experience.
• What makes you unique?

Your actual scholarship essay will be evaluated on four different factors, which are as follows:

#1: Length : There’s a maximum word count for each essay. The best essays will use all the space available. While you don’t need to write the exact max number of words, you should try to get as close as possible to the maximum.

#2: Content : The essay prompts will be focused and direct; make sure your response is as well. If the prompt includes multiple parts, ensure that you’re answering each part of the prompt.

• Highlight the qualities that the HSF values in scholarship recipients, including academic achievement, personal strengths, leadership skills or experiences, and commitment to giving back to the community. Reference the section above for examples of activities, experiences, and challenges you could highlight.
• If there are any major weaknesses in your HSF application (such as a lack of leadership experiences or poor academic performance), use your essays to explain yourself . Don’t make excuses—keep your tone matter-of-fact, but optimistic.
• If you’ve experienced any extraordinary hardships or obstacles, mention them in your essays . It’s important that application readers have a full and comprehensive understanding of situational factors that could have affected different aspects of your application.

#3: Use of Examples : The examples you use in your essays should be personal (without being confessional) and relevant to the prompt. Your essay responses will be more engaging if, for example, you begin your writing with an anecdote or personal story.

#4: Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation: Errors are distracting and detract from the quality of your writing. Avoid mistakes by giving yourself plenty of time to write the essay. Have a trusted teacher or mentor edit and proofread your work, too.

This sign doesn't make a great first impression. Make sure your HSF essay does!

Letters of Recommendation

Your academic recommendation writer must be an instructor, an adviser, or someone who can evaluate you academically (e.g., your academic performance, motivation, plans and goals, etc.). Additional recommenders can be either academic or nonacademic.

Secondary recommendation writers must be able to evaluate your community service and extracurricular activities (e.g., your leadership, work ethic, or commitment). Recommendations from family members, family friends, and other close friends are discouraged by HSF.

Strong letters of recommendation are important for any application. Here’s how you can go about getting the best letters possible for an HSF award application:

#1: Ask the Right People : Ideal recommendation writers are those in educator/mentor positions and with whom you have a long, positive history. The best recommender will be excited to vouch for you.

If you have someone in mind, ask them to write your letters in such a way that they have an "out" if they’re not comfortable doing it. If they don’t have any positive things to say about you, they’ll end up writing a lukewarm letter, and this will really hurt your application.

Ask if they’d be comfortable writing you a "very strong" or "glowing" letter. This way, you'll know that if they decline or hesitate, you’re probably better off asking someone else to write you a letter.

You can ask more than one person to write you a letter of recommendation. This is potentially a great opportunity to present yourself as a well-rounded applicant. I advise you to ask for letters from two to three people; any more than that, though, and the HSF scholarship evaluators will have too much to read!

#2: Give Your Letter Writers Plenty of Advance Notice: Aim for 10-12 weeks, if possible. Since the deadline for HSF is in mid-February, you'll want to aim to ask for rec letters by mid-November.

Although the HSF application means you'll be considered for many scholarships, you don't want to stop there! To really optimize your chances of getting scholarship funding, you should apply to as many scholarship programs as possible.

Tips for students applying to no essay scholarships

Look for competitions rather than randomized drawings.

No essay scholarships are alluring because they do away with the pressure that comes with writing an essay for your application. Between your other academic responsibilities, extracurriculars, and other commitments, these essays can present a big roadblock for applicants.

However, you should bear in mind that you are not the only student with this idea. Many applicants are attracted to opportunities that are easy to apply to, and since many no essay scholarships are essentially scholarship sweepstakes, that means you have a very low chance of actually winning.

This is not to say that you should not apply to these opportunities, but that you should seek out scholarship opportunities that assess some materials submitted by applicants. Whether this is a video submission, a portfolio, or a photograph you took, it can help your chances greatly.

Be wary of scholarship scams

No essay scholarships are very popular with students because they typically don’t take much time to apply to. Unfortunately, this makes them all the more popular with scammers. 

Before applying to any scholarship, and especially no essay scholarships, ensure that you are not giving away any personal information that could be used to steal your identity. All high school and college students, as well as anyone looking to attend college or graduate school in the next year. Please note: Not everyone is eligible for this scholarship. Niche sponsored scholarships and sweepstakes are for people with US citizenship or a valid Visa/US passport only. Read the scholarship rules for eligibility requirements.

How It Works

The $25,000 “No Essay” Scholarship is an easy scholarship with no essay required! Only one entry allowed per person. The winner will be determined by random drawing and then contacted directly and announced in Niche's e-newsletter and on the Scholarship Winners page.
