Description of My Village

My village exists in a low lying area that has a warm summer and a chilly winter. Mostly I visit my village in summers because of the holidays. Although the village is far cooler than the city during the summer. Also, you do not need air conditioners in a village because of the breeze. In a village you see greenery and almost every household has a minimum of one tree in their courtyards.

In addition, the thing that I like the most about my village is the fresh and revitalizing air. The air gives a feeling of refreshment even if I have slept for 4-5 hours. Most importantly, at night I see and count stars which I can’t do in the city.

Villages existed in India from ancient times and they have been dependent on each other for the demand and supply of goods. Likewise, they contribute a lot to the growth and development of the country. India is a country who depends on agriculture more than its secondary and tertiary sector.

Life in metropolitan cities can be exciting and very happening, but life in villages has an entirely different vibe with its countryside atmosphere. The simplicity, peace and purity of a village is wonderful and unbeatable. I come from a small Himalayan village, Lamahatta, popularly known for its beauty. The name of my village is Lamahatta. It is a small village present in the outskirts of North Bengal. I was born and brought up in Lamahatta. Lamahatta is well known for its lush pine forests, vast stretches of Darjeeling tea garden and the views of the snow-capped mountains. It is also a tourist destination. My village remains cool all through the year. The number of people residing in Lamahatta is not more than 1000. The villagers are very helpful. The majority of the women are tea-plantation workers whereas men work in construction. A pucca road runs through the entire village with small decorated houses on each side of the road. I love my village and its people.

I come from a village named Lamahatta. The village is located at a very high altitude nearly about 5000 feet above sea level. Lamahatta is a very small village of only 1000 residents. My village has become one of the tourist destinations because of its pleasant climate and natural beauty. Lamahatta has vast stretches of tea plantations and beautiful pine forests. These forests smell refreshing and sweet due to the presence of terpenes on them. My father used to take me to the village every year during my school holidays. I used to spend the entire holidays amidst the silence of the pine forests in a little concrete house with my mother, father and my brother.

The chirping of birds all throughout the day, and the light cool breeze used to amaze me and freshen up our minds. Here in my village, the houses are beautifully decorated with orchids and other flowers. Life in a village is very different from that in urban cities. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Lamahatta has always been peaceful. The people of my village are very helpful and lovable. In the evening, after the completion of work, every woman in the village meets in a small community hall where they have a small get-together. We celebrate each and every festival with great enthusiasm.

Everyone loves their native birthplace and so do I. I was born in a village named Lamahatta located at an altitude of 5000 feet near Darjeeling, the Queen of Hills in North Bengal. 'Lama' in Lamahatta stands for a Buddhist monk and 'Hatta’ means a hut. So basically Lamahatta means a monk's hermitage. Lamahatta is an offbeat location known for its lush green pine trees and large stretches of tea gardens with a beautiful view of the mountains. Due to this, my village has become a famous tourist destination mainly during the summers and the springs.

Life In A Village | Life in my village is quite different from that in urban cities. Here, it is slower and more peaceful. People live together and lead very simple lives. We mostly stay away from the continuous hustle and bustle of urban life. My village is greener and one can feel the freshness of the air.

About My Village

The people of my village are generally tribals belonging to the Sherpas, Tamangs, Bhutias and Dukpas . They work hard every day in order to make Lamahatta a clean, simple place and attractive place to live in. I belong to the Bhutia tribe. In my house, I have my parents and my small brother. My mother works as a tea plantation worker whereas my father works at a construction site. The occupations of the people in my village are plantation workers, homestay caretakers, dhaba managers and construction workers.

Places Of Attraction | My village people, along with the support of the government, have made this an eco-tourism place. Lamahatta contributes a good amount to North Bengal tourism. People from other countries often visit my village during the summer. Besides the natural beauty, the pleasant weather makes Lamahatt a dream place and an ideal place to live in. There are many exciting places for sightseeing here. We have the Lamahatta Eco Park , a roadside garden, monasteries among the woods, trekking facilities to Sacred Pond, the Gari Danda Fort and most importantly the huge tea plantations. My village serves as the connecting route between Darjeeling and Kalimpong . We also have ‘machan’, a wooden watchtower from where we can view the entire Lamahatta. The Eco park consists of about hundreds of colorful flags. My father says that the wind blowing through these flags is considered to purify the souls and minds of the people.

Christmas Celebration in Lamahatta

We celebrate all the festivals in my village but Christmas is specially celebrated with huge pomp and gaiety. Each house is decorated with lanterns and lights. All the kids have Christmas tree decoration competitions among themselves where the best tree decorator is awarded fancy gifts by the other villagers. On Christmas eve , all the villagers meet at a common place near Eco Park where we dance and dine together. I love my village because it is peaceful and serene. Lamahatta holds a number of my childhood memories. Living here makes me relive all those magical moments. It feels good to stay here. The natural beauty of my village always amazes me.

In origin, I’m from Bangladesh. But after the partition, my family came and settled in a remote village in Murshidabad. Presently, I stay in Kolkata with my parents, but several times I have heard my father remember his childhood days in the village.

During the vacations, I often visit the village. People are so innocent there and all of them love us so much. They care for their nature and do not harm it like the urban people. Also, they have still kept their tribal festivals intact. I love to enjoy their traditional food and this bonding between my people in the village. Whenever I visit my village, it has always been so ni experience.

Since my childhood days, I used to fantasize about spending my life in our ancestral village. Staying in a village has never been an opportunity for me because I am born and brought up in the city. We hardly get a chance to meet my ancestral people in the village of Murshidabad. The story goes back to the partition of India when my great grandparents migrated from Bangladesh and settled in Murshidabad to protect their families. At that time they were extremely poor and had a humble income to spend their days. They were followed by many others.

The village is now much more developed than it was when first inhabited. When I visit the village with my parents, during the vacation, it gets quite enjoyable to meet them after a long time. The clean air and water are beautiful with pure fruits and vegetables to eat. The reads are of red soil and soft to walk over. The humble neighbour of that village is the main reason I love my village.

Some of our relatives still live in the village. Their primary profession is agriculture. During my visit, my cousins took me to show the agricultural fields. It was totally a mesmerizing experience. The entire horizon was green and such a peaceful life that I could never experience in the city.

Life in a village is much different from what we experience in the city. The urban lifestyle does not provide us with all views of the Earth. The world has much more greenery and beauty than it seems to us. The city definitely gives a modern life, better infrastructure, more communication, and quick connections. But it also takes away the natural goodness from us.

I find myself extremely lucky to think that I am from a village. I stay in a distant village in the suburbs of Darjeeling. The best part of living in a village is that I can stay far away from the daily crowd of the city. The city is too confusing and suffocating for me. I cannot bear staying there even for a week. I always crave the peace I get in my own village. The village called Kasaimara is extremely beautiful in its flora and fauna. The air is clean and pure like the innocent people of my village.

We do not have many modern amenities like the city. We often face problems with network and communication, we do not have good schools or hospitals. But still, the peace of nature allows us to live a long and healthy life. I love to take long walks up the hill slopes in the morning or often cycle all the way. It saves the cost of taking any gym practice and is also helpful in maintaining a healthy body and peaceful mind.

Due to no pollution, we always have a majestic view of the mountains from our village. Around 50-50 families live in our village. For weekend and holiday picnics, all our villagers come together and celebrate with our ethnic music and dance. It is not like the mechanical life of the city. Everything we do here has a spontaneous charm and is full of life.

The environment of my village is so beautiful. The people work hard to preserve ethnic integrity. We have a rich history o folktales and myths. As a child, I often heard my grandparents tell me stories about them. They are precious and innocent like the people. They easily befriend other members, even from a different community. My village celebrates our own tribal festivals with great enjoyment and pomp. I am extremely lucky that I am a proud villager of India. We do not have many facilities, but at the end of the day, we are at peace with ourselves and others.

The main occupation of the villagers is farming. They are the primary source of the nation's agricultural production.

Villages have either tiny hamlets of thatched huts or large settlements of tiled roofs, stones, and brick homes. An impression has been created by artists and filmmakers that an Indian village is a simple cluster of mud-plastered walls, shaded by trees, overlooking the large expanses of green fields with a few people moving slowly and of course, bullock carts. They portray a village woman with a pot on her head and walking gracefully, her skirt swaying gently. The reality is that a village is the hub of nonstop activity, with their stronger work ethics.

Agriculture is tough and requires hard work. The villagers work very hard and are always trying to find innovative methods of growing wheat, rice, and lentils.

Importance of Village

The village is important because it is the primary sector of agricultural production for our country. The village is the backbone of India’s economy. It also plays a major role in maintaining the ecological balance of the environment. Villages are mostly covered with trees and plants. They are covered with green grasslands. One can see acres of green fields as far as the eyes could see. They provide shelter to many animals.

The village life is full of contentment and happiness, as people are not in a hurry like in city life.

Village people live a very simple life. Villages are mostly situated far from the hustle and bustle of urban civilization. The beauty of nature can be experienced in a village as it is surrounded by trees, flowers, mountains, streams, and farmlands. There is no pollution in the village and one can feel the freshness in the breeze. The demands of the villagers are not too high but they are still deprived of basic facilities. Clean drinking water, electricity, health center, schools, proper sanitation are a few facilities that are lacking in the villages. Their poverty is always visible in the atmosphere. The Panchayati Raj system still prevails in the village and they monitor all activities. The villagers are usually very superstitious.

My village is a small village with a population of only two hundred people. My village’s name is Bolpur. It is 150kms away from the main city of Kolkata. I visit my village once a year during my Dussehra vacation. I go there with my parents during this time to our ancestral house where Durga Puja takes place every year.

As the car turns to take the muddy road, I can feel the freshness in the air. The road that leads to the village has big trees on either side and they are so full of life as if they are dancing with joy to welcome us to their village. I have never seen such a breathtaking scene. There is a temple at the entrance of the village where often prayers, rituals, and other worshipping activities are taking place.. There is a big pond near the temple and is surrounded by mango trees, champak trees, and a big peepal tree. The smell of the flowers and mango buds attracts everyone’s attention. My ancestral home is behind the peepal tree.

There is a primary school in my village where the village kids study with a lot of enthusiasm. I love watching them, while the classes are going on, but right now for the Durga Utsav, the school is closed. There is a small dispensary with a doctor and a nurse. They can take care of basic illnesses like fever and stomach pain. For complicated ailments and medicines, the people have to go to the neighboring town. There is a small grocery shop where the basic necessities for sustenance are available. Besides the grocery shop, there is a tea stall with some snacks available. The tea stall is the prime meeting point for all the villagers during the evening time, even in other hours of the day the stall is never empty. It is always full of people sipping tea and chatting, breaking the world’s news to each other. There is a post office in my village.

My favorite spot is a small rivulet. I love going there and spending time because beyond the rivulet lay are acres of grasslands and hills. For an artist, it will be a perfect picture to paint. All, young and old swim and bathe in the rivulet. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. Whenever I come to my village, I feel immense pleasure because of its peaceful and serene environment. I get to enjoy some fresh and organic vegetables and fruits here. The people in my village are very helpful and they live in harmony with no grudges. They live like one big family who always takes care of each other. We can hardly find this act of compassion back in the city.

My village is a small abode for happy people. Here they live in harmony and peace. The village people are very hardworking and thus they must have a good source of upliftment. Like the village’s schools and clinics should be maintained and increased in number. The farmers should be facilitated by helping them to leverage their sales, make them notified about the modern techniques used in farming, and give them compensation and knowledge of the true market price of their crops. Thus, I would request governmental authorities to come forward and uplift the medical, educational, and farming facilities in the village.

The extended Essay on My Village is common among students in classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

My village is called Aadapur. It is in the Bankura district of West Bengal. Our community comprises about 150 to 200 families; the total number of people dwelling here is nearly 2000. I have a family of four – it consists of my parents, my elder sister, and myself. While my sister helps my mother with household chores, my father does manual labor in the nearby construction site.

Anantapur is a small village, but a lovely one. One long stretch of road runs across the entire town, branching and bending here and there, and giving birth to lanes and bylanes. Small mud huts and cottages sit in two parallel rows on either side of the road, facing one another. All the households of mud and sand; only a few handfuls of cement-made buildings are in the area.

We have some facilities here and there. At the very center of the village stands the community village school’ it is aided by the Government. It is the only education institution in the area; there are no colleges. The school building is of two stories and houses students from standards 1 to 8. I study in the fifth standard.

The village panchayat building is another building made from concrete. All minor judiciary matters are dealt with over here. The house is presided over by the Panch and his other ministers.

Anantapur is still on its way to development. The village had its first electric connection only a few months back. We have electricity for 14 hours in households from four o’clock in the evenings to six o’clock in the mornings. We do face minor power-cuts once or twice, but those are very rare.

The local bazaar is 10 minutes from our area. If one has to buy any essential commodities or food items, they can go to the market on foot; they can also take a rickshaw ride of 5 minutes. The bazaar is flocked with markets that sell essential, necessary products. The bazaar also has a government ration shop. The entire village gathers in a queue before the ration shop once every month for their share of subsidized rations. Apart from these shops, the village itself has four or five small shops here and there.

The roads are all cart-tracks; they are not line tracks. Our village consists of a close-knit community – everyone knows each other here. Every evening, my friends from neighboring huts and I gather in the fields to play. We play hide-and-seek and kabaddi mostly. The streets stay lit from the lamp-posts present in every bylane.

The main occupation of the people in Anandapur is manual labor, handicrafts, and agriculture. After they complete their eight standard education, a few people migrate to the city of Calcutta for higher studies; the Government distributes yearly scholarships for this opportunity.

Situated in the lap of nature, my village is surrounded by greenery. Like in cities, pollution has not yet invaded the air around us. Although city life provides many benefits and advantages to its dwellers, I am satisfied with the little and peaceful life, which I lead in my small village.

The name of my village is Fitkari. It is located in Mawana, a small town in the city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. It was primarily the village of my grandfather, where he was born and brought up. Because of that familial association, we find this village really beautiful. My family and I often go back to live there for a couple of days to relax far away from the hustle of city life.

Our Public Library has been named after the great author. National Highway 34 runs through our village. Kanthalpara is connected with Kolkata by land and water. There’s so much simplicity and peace in my village. In all respects, this is an ideal village.

A big canal flows by the northern side of the village. The climate of our village is suitable for health. The southern and the western sides of my village are open. So, we get fresh air. The climate of our village is exactly suitable for our health. The river, the large cornfields, the garden, the orchards etc. add to its beauty. The soil of the village is fertile & suitable. So we get rice, jute oilseed etc. in plenty. Every family has a garden near the dwelling house. Flower-plants and fruit-trees are grown there. Most of the villagers earn their livelihood by selling surplus fruits and vegetables. So to speak, it helps them economically. The people of my village are very gentle. They live in perfect harmony with one another.

A second round of Central New York village elections takes place on Tuesday.

The polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m. in villages holding elections in Onondaga, Cayuga, Madison and Oswego counties. Some villages held elections in March.

Residents in the Village of Liverpool will also be voting on whether or not to move elections from June to November.

This Aska Invasion Guide will tell you how Invasions work, which enemies will attack you, and what you can do to fend off the invaders!

There's more to Aska than spawning some villagers and building a settlement; you'll also have to occasionally defend your settlement from invaders . Each Invasion has unique challenges to overcome. Read on to learn about what you can expect from Invasion events!

How Invasions Work in Aska

Invasions are special events in Aska where hostile wildlife or undead enemies will attempt to attack your town. In most cases, your buildings and your villagers will be targeted by these invaders. Villagers who are assigned to a Barracks, Archery Range, or Watchtower will fight back provided that they are equipped with a weapon.

An Invasion will typically end when one of two conditions have been fulfilled:

All of the invaders are killed
The sun rises

In some cases (such as the Blood Moon or Winter Invasion), killing all of the invaders will not stop the event; they will keep coming until the sun rises. Ensure that you have several soldiers to defend your town and adequate combat equipment for yourself at all times!

Surrounding your village with a wall is essential to preventing damage to your buildings and villagers. Even if a wall is destroyed, it's much cheaper to repair a wall than it is to repair a building.

Here are all of the Invasion events that we've encountered so far.

A Pack of Hungry Smolkrs is Approaching...

A small group of Smolkrs will rush into your town and eat random items. They can be scared away simply by your presence, although you can also just kill them. A fence or wall surrounding your settlement will largely prevent their entry as Smolkrs do not attack buildings.

The Blood Moon Rises...

The forces of darkness will send out small patrols of 2–3 enemies in waves. Enemies will spawn from a particular point indicated on the map . This event lasts until the sun rises, after which any remaining enemies will retreat into the wilderness.

A Wolf Pack is Approaching

A group of 3 Wulfar will charge at your town and attack buildings , villagers , and you. The Wulfar will eventually run away if you don't kill them all.

Bear Attack! Watch Out!

A massive Bear will spawn in from the wilderness and charge toward your town. The Bear will attack your buildings , your villagers , and you. You can force the Bear to retreat by reducing its health to 25%–50%; the Bear's health will begin to regenerate once it has begun retreating.

Should you manage to kill the Bear, you'll get a large amount of meat and some other animal-related crafting resources. Be careful, though — as you might expect, the melee attacks from the bear do a lot of damage.

A Portal Just Spawned. Darkness is Coming. The Gods Will Test You.

This event occurs a few days into your second year and starts a timer that lasts around 25 days. This is simply a warning of the impending Winter Invasion which will take place early in your second Winter season and, as far as we can tell, every Winter thereafter.

Winter Invasion Started

The Winter Invasion will see several large groups of undead/demonic enemies attacking in waves. Each group will have a mix of Skeletons and Draugr, and each group will often contain 1 Follower as well. The Winter Invasion lasts the entire night.

You will absolutely want to have at least a Hedge Wall surrounding your entire town. Without one, you can expect several buildings to be totally destroyed.

It is a good idea to have at least 3–6 melee fighters on your side as well. A talented player can probably manage to kill most enemies before they do any damage, but some of the enemies (such as the Follower) can be particularly challenging to fight.

I Finally Befriended My Idol Tavi Gevinson. Would It Fall Apart Over Taylor Swift?

I first heard Tavi Gevinson’s name at a breakfast I attended on the Upper West Side in 2010. A group of mothers were talking about her, seemingly with some envy. I was confused; UWS moms aren’t supposed to be jealous of 14-year-old girls. From what I could gather, Tavi—who had launched her fashion blog, Style Rookie, a couple years before from her bedroom in Oak Park, Illinois, and had since attended Paris Fashion Week and been interviewed in The New York Times —wasn’t the usual kind of kid-famous: She was a fascinating person. Like other fascinating people, there wasn’t gonna be an easy way to classify her. My cheeks started going hot now, too. I was jealous of that idea—that Tavi couldn’t be easily understood.

I wanted to know Tavi. Or, I wanted Tavi to know me. I didn’t think I should be the one to initiate. She probably wouldn’t like that. She was getting enough attention already. To stand out, I should probably run into her the old-fashioned way. No, I should probably become successful myself. I should probably only run into Tavi once I became a success.

Years went by, and I kept tabs on Tavi. She became an actress.That hurt, but I wasn’t gonna let it crush my admiration completely. Tavi became friends with a good friend of mine. I became friends with a good friend of hers. The eventuality of becoming friends with Tavi became more and more of a possibility. But I never ran into her.

It was 12 years before I was finally invited to a dinner party that Tavi was also attending. It was an intimate dinner party in New York and I wasn’t successful. I wished I had more assets to bring to the party. I will say: I was lookin’ good. Or, I was thinking I was looking good. I was in my mid 20s, in a new “I’m hot” stage of my life. I felt insecure about everything else, but the hotness feeling went a long way.

There’s no way beautiful Tavi ever cared or thought about “looking hot.”

We were allowed to smoke inside, and the wine was better than what I was used to, and I got very drunk. All of the guests were talking about politics. Actually, I’m not sure what they were talking about—all six of them seemed like geniuses, and I was out of my element. I was living in Los Angeles then, and only visiting New York for a couple of nights. All I knew to contribute at a dinner party were stories from my childhood, recaps of nights out, tales of who I’d had sex with. Like I said, I was out of my element, and the wine wasn’t solving anything.

I remembered I had read an article from The Cut the week before—the only topic I could think of that wasn’t about myself. I brought the article up. I looked around. Three of the other guests worked for places like The New Yorker. I was probably a dumbass for bringing up a publication like The Cut, so I attempted to cover my ass. “I’m a dumbass, so I read The Cut.”

Nobody liked that.

Without missing a beat, Tavi turned to the sweet-looking man next to me—who was now ghostly white—and said, “Tony, congratulations—it’s amazing it took The Cut this long to promote you as editor.”

I had just insulted a major publication in front of one of the major publication’s editors . I wanted to rip out my fingernails.

Things got worse from there. That’s when I started contributing sex stories. I had nothing else. Tavi patiently sat through my rambling, with nothing to prove. She had a serious boyfriend with her. They seemed like such a sexy, solid unit.

I woke up the next morning and decided that Tavi was Enemy No. 1. What. A. Bitch.

Years went by and I got my act together a little more. I moved back to New York. I figured out how to hold my tongue at dinner parties.

One evening two years ago, Tavi and I reunited at the scene of the crime: our friend Naomi’s apartment, where Tavi had “thrown me under the bus” years before. I was ready.

We became friends. Not quickly, but honestly. With the normal amount of intensity—but I longed for intimacy with Tavi. I wasn’t sure how to get there. She still scared the shit out of me; it was as if she could see RIGHT THROUGH ME. Like she’s a lie detector or something. Plus, I had entered a rocky new stage of my life—filled with anxiety and mania—and I was doubling down on performing “happy” behavior so that she wouldn’t be able to see what was really going on.

But I had an idea. What if I asked Tavi to write something with me? Writing might be the perfect way for us to understand each other better; and frankly, I thought it might make her like me more. So I suggested we write an article together. She suggested that I review her new zine, Fan Fiction , that would be published online soon. It was an imagined friendship with Taylor Swift that would be loosely—very loosely—based on her own brief interactions with the pop star. I agreed—and immediately wished I hadn’t. There are five Taylor Swift songs that are EXTREMELY meaningful to me, but for some reason I’m not that interested in all of the cultural critiques of her. Sometimes, I like seeing what she’s up to in paparazzi photos, but mostly, I just like listening to those five songs.

Weeks went by. I had a terrible manic episode. I was the only one who wasn’t aware that I was having a terrible manic episode. I didn’t read the zine. I couldn’t bring myself to.

I don’t just like listening to Taylor’s music. I’ll say it: I am interested in “Taylor Swift.” There was a period last summer in which she would come up in every SINGLE conversation I had on a given day. I’d only ever experienced this with politics, with people like Donald Trump. It fascinated me that Taylor’s name was quite literally on everybody’s lips. And that most of what was said was extremely complimentary. I guess I was jealous.

I didn’t read the zine. Tavi called me. She wondered where the article was. I mumbled some gibberish about how maybe we should do something else. Could we write an article in which Tavi teaches me how to be a good friend? Tavi seemed disappointed, but she agreed to it. She said she thought it sounded funny. I felt like a piece of shit.

Why wouldn’t I read Tavi’s zine? I do read . I actually read! I KNOW HOW TO DO IT! It wasn’t the 70 pages that bothered me and I love Tavi’s writing. I look up to her as a writer! Why was I stringing her along like this? WHY COULDN’T I READ THE GODDAMNED ZINE.

Another week went by and Tavi—surprise, surprise—initiated the kind of intimacy I had always dreamed of us having. It started with a voice note. Not that I was able to listen to it. I couldn’t bear to. Instead, I just assumed that it was probably Tavi telling me that she was annoyed that I agreed to write an article about Fan Fiction and then decided to write something else instead. I called her up. Tavi confirmed that she’d like me to review the zine and that she wasn’t interested in working on anything else together for the time being. She expressed, vulnerably, that she wanted the zine to get more readers. If I wrote an article about it, it might help to get it out there. Here Tavi was, respecting me by telling me exactly what she needed. My heart sunk: Tavi and I were getting to know each other better through writing, but only because I was acting like a disrespectful piece of shit.

I’m not actually jealous of Taylor Swift. Her life seems like something I wouldn’t know how to handle. I’m going to say something that’ll at first sound like a BOLD delusion of grandeur, but: I don’t think Taylor Swift would like me. And I wouldn’t blame Taylor for hating me. We sort of, kind of have a mutual friend, and I treated this friend badly. The kind of bad that changed the way I even thought about myself.

I didn’t want to read or hear or watch anything about Taylor because I didn’t want to be reminded of all of my own shortcomings.

I agreed to read Tavi’s zine. I wanted to be a good friend to Tavi.

I read Fan Fiction at a small table in the back of Walker’s in Tribeca in just under an hour. I flew through the thing. It’s painful and awkward and hilarious and expertly written. It’s insightful. It turns out Tavi had already written an article about how to be a good friend, and it’s Fan Fiction. In it, Tavi tells the love story that unfolds when one falls for a new best friend. It is a warning about how not to go about friendship, and how to remain true to yourself in relation to another person. Fan Fiction defines the difference between intensity and intimacy. Tavi grapples with the mistakes she made in trying to become REAL and TRUE friends with Taylor, and through that she tries to make peace with the different, inauthentic versions of herself which emerged. I know the thing’s a fantasy piece, but the truth that Tavi inserted into the idolization of a contemporary woman…well, it was hard to ignore how Tavi was my Taylor Swift.

Towards the end of the second act, Tavi writes: “I could not love Taylor. I was too much of a fan.”

I could not—maybe can not—love Tavi, because I am too much of a fan!

After years of trying to scheme my way into Tavi’s heart, I finally realized: I’d have to get to know her first.

Just as Tavi wasn’t able to see Taylor, or let Taylor SEE HER, I couldn’t properly listen to Tavi because I had already decided who she was, what she liked, and what was most important to know about her. I couldn’t hear Tavi because my prime focus in talking to Tavi has always been to impress.

We went to dinner a couple of nights later. It was the closest I’d ever felt to Tavi, and I think it was because it was the first time that I might have actually listened to her. I already had listened to her. I had read her writing. I knew more about her imagination.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the last act of Fan Fiction , in which Tavi imagines a correspondence with Taylor in which Taylor and Tavi battle for control over their own narratives. (Tavi writing as Taylor made me laugh out loud. A REAL cackle.) Not only do Taylor and Tavi disagree on what happened between them, on specific memories, but they also fight to be individuals. They wrestle with how to both admire and disagree with each other. It is my favorite part of the zine because it is a fascinating account of Tavi and Taylor’s fictional battle for narrative control.

I began to get self-conscious about this idea. Was I writing this piece just to please Tavi? Was it stupid of me to promote her zine by emulating its style? Would my mimicry actually disappoint her? Would she feel sucked up to, or worse, swindled somehow? I decided to send her my draft. She responded right away.

Dear Annie, Thank you for sending me your piece. I'm very flattered to know you've followed my work all these years. I respect you so much and admire the level of self-reflection here. I also lol’d a handful of times. Just a few corrections as I’m sure you want to be accurate— I did not throw you under the bus. I made sure you knew Tony worked at The Cut before you could humiliate yourself further. Don't include that I wanted more people to read my zine. I think ending with us getting dinner is a bit sentimental (though I hold that night very close). Overall: I worry it's a bit too fawning. Kind of reads like I'm holding a gun to your head. Any way you can make it so you seem less afraid of me would be great. Other than that—love it! Title: "Work Friends"? xx Tavi

In Fan Fiction, Tavi and Taylor fight to get the last word. But I can’t imagine Tavi ever not securing the final word in any kind of argument. Tavi is good with words and even better at putting her imagination onto the page. I urge you to read Fan Fiction , okay?! I IMPLORE you to.

If this experience with Tavi inadvertently taught me how to be a good friend, Fan Fiction granted me the permission to be the fan again. Her fan again. A fan of anyone, actually.

In my most meaningful relationships, I will always be just that…a fan .

Wildfires force New Mexico village of Ruidoso to evacuate homes: See map

The village of ruidoso ordered all of its residents to evacuate: 'please do not try to gather belongings or protect your home - go now'..

Two wildfires burned through thousands of acres in New Mexico and residents were ordered to evacuate as the fires developed rapidly. Videos show smoke from the fire billowing into the sky, looking like orange clouds, as people watch nearby.

"I strongly urge residents of Ruidoso and the surrounding areas to remain calm and heed official instructions to help minimize risk," said New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in a statement on Tuesday.

The South Fork Fire and the Salt Fire were discovered on Monday. The fires, which are burning on tribal land, prompted mandatory evacuations for the entire Village of Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs, a two-hour drive southeast of Albuquerque.

The cost of the damage done by the fires is unknown, according to USA TODAY's data .

By early Monday evening, the flames damaged multiple structures, states the New Mexico Forestry Division , but how many remains unknown.

"My administration is in close contact with state, tribal and federal officials about the status of these fast-moving fires, and we are quickly deploying as many resources as possible to protect people and property," said Grisham.

The following roads and highways are closed to traffic, said the village in another tweet :

Highway 70 closed from Highway 244 to the east Reservation line.
Highway 48 is closed from Alpine Village to State Highway 220.
State police closed Carrizo Canyon Road to all traffic.

"The evacuation route is via Highway 70 and out towards Roswell," states the city's website.

The following locations are open to people evacuating, according to multiple tweets from the village:

ENMU-Roswell gym : The Red Cross set up an emergency shelter for evacuees. If it's full, Godfrey Athletic Center is a secondary option.
Lea County Fairgrounds : The location has Stables and RV hookups, but the village asks that people contact Fairgrounds Director Wyatt Duncan at 575-333-0252.

What My Cancer Surgery Taught Me About Immigration

Wheeled into the operating room last January, staring up at the massive arms of the robot with which a surgeon would remove my cancerous gland, I was hit with an unusual realization: I owe a debt of gratitude to President Lyndon Johnson and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.

Why? Without that legislation, the surgeon who operated on me probably wouldn’t be here. Nor might the doctor who pioneered the procedure. Nor the philanthropist who financed the research. Nor many workers at the company that makes these robots or those at a different company that designed the chips that enable the robot.

As my ordeal with cancer shows, immigration has become critical to our health. Immigrants account for more than a quarter of physicians, surgeons and personal care aides and about a fifth of nursing assistants.

I’m not sure we realize that immigrants help keep us alive: Just look at West Virginia , a state hostile to immigration where aging residents have died before getting off the wait list for home health aides.

While many Americans — including politicians this election year — dwell on stories like the Venezuelan migrant accused of killing a Georgia nursing student, they often forget the critical ways immigration has historically benefited us. A century ago this spring, the United States slammed the door on large sections of the world, and we could be on the verge of doing so again.

That I am so cognizant of the importance of immigrants is the result of two coincidences. The first is that I teach a class on practical writing at Stanford Business School. Frustrated by the cynicism that has pervaded my 3,000 students, many of whom were only teenagers when Donald Trump was elected and are skeptical of the government, I began showing a slide documenting the benefits they enjoy from legislation that originated in the 1960s. For one, many Stanford Business School students — I would guess roughly a quarter — come from families that would not be in this country if not for Mr. Johnson’s Immigration and Nationality Act.

Is the Chinese military a Potemkin village?

I want to direct your attention to a Joe Cunningham essay in which he posits that the Chinese military is in trouble. He’s almost certainly right. The problem with communism is that it reduces societies to the lowest common denominator of any behavior and, as people scrabble for advancement in a controlled system, it invites corruption.

Writing at Red State , Cunningham points out purges and problems regarding China’s military:

The Chinese President is calling for “deep reflection” among his military forces as he renews his focus on corruption, which has plagued China in recent months. His call comes after what the Wall Street Journal describes as a “purge that has brought down more than a dozen senior generals and defense-industry executives.” if(page_width_onload '); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1609270365559-0'); }); } Recently, Xi was embarrassed to find that missiles were filled with water rather than fuel , with officials pocketing the money meant to make the missiles fly.

Just today, the Wall Street Journal was back with more news about China’s military problems. The story is behind the Journal’s paywall, but the first paragraph tells you a lot:

Chinese leader Xi Jinping ordered a redoubled campaign to eradicate graft and enforce loyalty in the military, suggesting no end to a purge in the country’s defense establishment that has raised questions about Beijing’s ability to wage war.

In his speech to top military officials, Xi pointed to problems with discipline, ethics, ideology, and moral character, all of which are permeating the military.

I agree with Cunningham that Xi’s concerns reflect a real issue rather than being a communist chief’s periodic reminder to the military about who’s in charge and the fate that can befall those who run afoul of him. No doubt they all know that, in 2016, Kim Jong-un executed two of his senior officials using anti-aircraft guns. Despots don’t like being made to look bad.

Here are my three reasons for believing Xi isn’t just posturing but is actually worried:

1. China’s former one-child policy, which resulted in a huge surplus of males, also resulted in a surplus of weak men coddled by their families. These children , who came to be known as “little emperors,” are risk-averse and non-competitive, and the young men are neurotic.

In other words, even though China still recognizes the sex binary, it has its own version of the soy-boy personality in its society, and that’s going to affect its military.

2. Communism breeds corruption. As we see in America’s institutions—everything from the government to our own military to academia—merit is no longer a factor in advancement. Instead, ideological correctness is the primary consideration in leftist systems. However, a system dominated by the ideologically pure rather than the competent inevitably collapses under its own weight. The mission gives way to in-fighting and profiteering.

What’s happening to the Chinese military now is a foretaste of the imminent collapse of our own institutions unless they’re put back on a merit track.

3. Communism breeds substandard quality. When merit has no reward, people do substandard work. We see that in every product that comes out of China. The artisans, craftsmen, and small farmers who once labored to produce the best for their own pleasure and economic benefit have been wiped out in a country that’s one giant factory assembly line. You do enough to get by and not one iota more. Chinese equipment looks great, but it’s still built in Chinese factories.

Again, we’re seeing this across America. There is no room for an individual’s pride in his work when he is a widget in a state-focused rather than an individual-focused system.

While any military, of necessity, cannot have too much individualism, the best militaries are still made up of people who see themselves as having individual value and who take pride in whatever they do. China’s little emperors cannot be those people.

None of this, of course, means that the Chinese military isn’t a force to be reckoned with. It’s huge, meaning that, as was the case with the Soviet Union after the Nazis invaded, it has enough bodies to absorb whatever its enemy throws at it and still come back with more troops. The Nazis were the better fighting force, but the combination of a limitless Red Army and a cold winter defeated them on their Eastern front.

Still, Xi does have a problem. He can fix it for a while through the coercion of fear. However, eventually, even fear is an insufficient glue to hold together an inherently unstable system.
