500 Words Essay on Indoor Games

Indoor games are those activities that are performed within the confines of a physical structure, such as a home, school, gymnasium, or recreational center. They provide an excellent alternative to outdoor games, especially in situations where weather conditions or space constraints make it impractical to engage in outdoor activities.

Historically, indoor games were a means of entertainment during social gatherings and were often used to foster community spirit. Traditional indoor games include board games like chess and card games like poker. However, with the advent of technology, the nature and scope of indoor games have significantly evolved. Today, video games, virtual reality games, and online multiplayer games have become an integral part of the indoor gaming culture.

Indoor games offer several benefits, both mental and physical. They stimulate cognitive skills such as problem-solving, strategic thinking, and decision-making. Games like chess, for instance, require players to anticipate their opponent’s moves and plan their strategy accordingly. This cognitive stimulation aids in the development of critical thinking skills.

Physically, while indoor games may not provide the same level of exercise as outdoor sports, they do contribute to fine motor skill development. Games that require precise hand-eye coordination, like table tennis or billiards, can enhance these skills.

Moreover, indoor games also have a significant impact on emotional well-being. They provide a platform for social interaction and bonding, thereby reducing feelings of loneliness and promoting emotional health.

Indoor Games in the Digital Age

The digital revolution has significantly influenced the world of indoor games. Video games have evolved from simple pixelated games to complex narratives with high-definition graphics. Virtual reality games have taken this a step further by providing an immersive gaming experience.

Online multiplayer games have transformed gaming into a social activity, where players from across the globe can connect, compete, and collaborate. These games also provide a platform for competitive e-sports, a rapidly growing industry.

Conclusion: The Future of Indoor Games

The future of indoor games seems promising. With advancements in technology, we can expect more immersive and interactive gaming experiences. However, it is essential to strike a balance between digital and traditional indoor games to ensure holistic development.

In conclusion, indoor games are not just a source of entertainment but also a tool for cognitive, physical, and emotional development. Introduction

No one can be mentally stable and strong if he or she is physically weak. Perhaps, this is a reason why all schools compulsorily include physical education among their academic and educational curriculum. As a part of our day-to-day lives, sports and games can help develop a fertile brain and ensure overall immunity and health. My parents always encourage me to actively participate in games and sports. While sports give me a break from everyday routine, my parents believe that it has more valuable benefits to offer.

Adding Spark in Life

Both indoor and outdoor sports are incredible sources of recreation. After a quick run in the field or a short chess session with my father, I feel very energetic and cheerful. It lessens the dullness that I feel after a long, hard day. And remaining mentally charged up does have some positive effects on my body. I have often found it easy to give more effort to my work with a happy heart.

Imparting Value

Playing sports regularly also helps to build a spirit of sportsmanship. It is a virtue essential to many more years to come. Also, it helps to be efficient in teamwork. When a group of the players is in the same game, the performance of each participant matters. The success largely depends on the joint effort and co-operation of the entire team. Any weak link or poor performance can negatively affect the game. Regular participation in sports also helps to build a sturdy physique and has a good sense of humour. Of course, regular participation helps to improve concentration, as well.

Staying Outdoor or Indoor?

After the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, I get a lesser chance to go out and play. The scarcity of big playing fields or parks in my locality is also another big problem. Yet, whenever I get the chance to play outside, it feels good. I get a chance to mix with several boys and girls in my age group. Also, I love the greenery there. It makes me feel very close to Mother Nature. Sometimes, we form small groups to play tiny cricket matches, ball games, and tug of war. Even small group games involved a lot of strategic thinking and teamwork. It helped a shy child like me to socialize better. At least, it gave me some quality time with my playmates.

I also love indoor games because they give me fast entertainment. They are also easily accessible. My room has a lot of board games for timepass. These include Ludo and monopoly. However, I also love mind games like chess and Sudoku. Besides, there are times when my mother allows me to play with her smartphone for a limited time. I have downloaded some interesting games there, as well.

What My Doctor Says

My family doctor strongly recommends that I go out and play. Even during the lockdown, he would ask me to get on the rooftop and do spot jogging or play handball with my family. As he puts it, our stay needs a little bit of sunshine daily. This helps the body to work perfectly.

Going out with a bike or a balloon for an hour gives some really enjoyable exercising experience. Moreover, while outside, I have often discovered some new games to play alone or with friends. My friends called me innovative. This made me proud and confident about what I can do.

My Favourite Games

I don't have a single favourite game. While outside, I love climbing trees. Whenever I go to a new garden, a park, or any rural areas, I constantly look for new trees to climb. Also, I love playing roadside cricket with my friends. The cricket matches on the TV channels are a treat to watch.

I also love group games that have some entertainment. For example, the good old hide-and-seek with variations. Sometimes we would count on 100, while sometimes on 10. We would also occasionally keep a home base to run as well as tag. Thus made it a safe spot. Sometimes, I just wait for my friends to find me out. Even when I am with my family, I love playing charades and chess.

200 Word Essay on Favourite Game

500 words essay on favourite games.

Favourite Game Essay

Games play a huge role in the development of our bodies and minds. Games and studies both aid in a person's overall development. As we can see, school schedules include two or three game periods each week, emphasising the value of playing games in addition to academics. Playing games keeps us healthy and fit.

Games That I Play

I usually play indoor games like Monopoly and chess. My favourite part of the day is spending time playing these games with my siblings. For some of the games, we even include prizes and winnings. Football is my favourite outdoor sport, aside from indoor games. My friends and I enjoy playing it. The rainy season is when we get to enjoy it the most. On days when our schools are closed due to bad weather, we leave for the park in the light rain; the wet fields are the best place to enjoy this sport. I've had a lot of football practice, so I hope one day to be chosen for my school's football team and win trophies for my school. Games are necessary for our mental and physical fitness. When we play outdoor games, they make us fit and exercise our muscles.

It is well known that a person's overall development depends on both their physical and mental well-being, which can be achieved through games. Young children can learn a lot from playing games. Playing games helps them improve their communication, creativity, and critical thinking abilities. Along with that, it promotes personality growth. Many kids are naturally talented players, so they must develop these skills to turn their gifts into a career. Regular gaming is a habit that many people have.

My Favourite Games

I enjoy both indoor and outdoor games. I play games like chess and carrom with my brother and sister; it is my favourite time-pass hobby at home . Video games are also a favourite hobby of ours, and we enjoy competing together at them. I also enjoy outdoor sports such as cricket, football, and badminton.

Out of all these games, football is my favourite outdoor sport . I enjoy playing it with my friends, especially when it rains and our schools have rainy-day leaves. My favourite football players are Sunil Chhetri, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi. Sunil Chhetri is the current captain of our Indian football team and represents our country at the international level. He is also the second-best scorer in the international football rankings.

More about Football

Soccer is another word for football in some countries. Two teams compete, each with 11 players total, including the goalkeeper. The football field is very large; sometimes it even stretches up to 68 metres. The field is divided into two halves, with each team allotted one half. The goalkeeper's job is to stop the ball and prevent a goal from happening, while the other ten players are in charge of scoring a goal by passing the ball through the opposing team's field and then to their goalpost. To score successfully, different teams employ a variety of tactics and player formations. The games last 90 minutes, divided into two 45-minute halves, and the team with the most goals wins.

Lessons through Games

Every sport teaches us beneficial lessons that we can apply in our daily lives. Every action we take in life teaches us something. We learn and develop our skills while playing games. The following is a list of some valuable things we acquire:

It teaches us to learn from our mistakes.

It gives us a sense of healthy competition, which enables us to succeed in school and other areas of our lives.

Help us to recognise the difference between right and wrong.

It teaches us that effort and practice enable us to bounce back from failure.

essay on indoor games for class 5

23 Fun Indoor Classroom Games and Activities

When you ask young kids what their favorite subject in school is, they’d probably answer “Recess!” — loudly, proudly, and genuinely happy.

And who can blame them? They’re right at the age when they want to play games, hang out with their friends, and have a good time. Of course, they’d have a soft spot in their hearts for their free time during the school day when they can do all that.

But what about when rain and snow hit and your younger students are all stuck inside the classroom for recess? Sitting inside doing nothing isn’t much fun.

But the good news is there are plenty of fun games and activities you and your students can play indoors! If you’re expecting inclement weather for the week, you can plan fun indoor recess activities ahead of time.

Here are the 23 best indoor recess games you and your kids can play on the next snowy or rainy day.

essay on indoor games for class 5

1. Four Corners

Starting off our list is Four Corners — a simple, easy, and, most importantly, fun game to play with the whole class. It’s a “last man standing wins” type of game. There are slight variations on how people can play this game, but here’s how we do it:

  • Start by assigning a number (or color) to each corner of the room.
  • Draw lots or choose one student to be “it” and have them stand in the middle of the room.
  • The student in the middle closes their eyes and starts to count down from 10.
  • While they’re counting, the rest of the students need to pick a corner and stand in it. Whoever fails to get to a corner before the countdown ends will need to take their seat.
  • Once the countdown is done, the “it” student chooses a corner by shouting its number or color.
  • Any students standing in that corner are now out of the game and need to sit down. If there are no students in the called out corner, then all students sitting down get to join the fun again.
  • The game continues until there’s only one player left. The winner gets to be the “it” for the next round.

2. Hopscotch

Hopscotch is old but gold when it comes to playground games. If it’s raining outside, you can easily make an indoor hopscotch ladder using masking tape. It’s a super simple game that almost everyone knows how to play.

Here are a few tips for a happy, hopping time:

  • Make a few hopscotch ladders around the classroom so your students can break off into small groups to play.
  • Draw different ladders to challenge your kids!
  • Make the hopscotch longer or draw triangle shapes for smaller, more challenging spaces.
  • You can also make a snail hopscotch. Draw the squares within a spiral like a snail’s shell, with the centermost circle as the “home” or final square.

3. Freeze Dance

Freeze dance is a great activity to help restless young kids burn their excess energy. And it’s a straightforward game to organize, too! You only need a speaker, a music player, and a list of fun, upbeat songs.

If you’re planning to do this activity well in advance, you can ask your students for their favorite songs and play those instead. That’s sure to get them up on their feet and dancing.

Just let the songs play and stop them at random intervals. While the music plays, your students can show off their best dance moves or chicken dance their way through — what matters is they have fun! But once the song stops, they need to freeze and stay frozen until you start up the music again.

Whoever moves is out of the game! Keep going until you get one last person remaining.

4. Floor Is Lava

Who doesn’t know how to play this Floor is Lava? This game will surely be a hit not just with the younger kids but even older students in their pre-teen years.

Just shout out, “The floor is lava!” and watch as your students scramble to get to higher ground! After that, tell them to find a way to reach the front of the room and watch the hijinks that ensue.

While that’s a great way to encourage unstructured play, you can also prepare a bit more fun and difficulty:

  • Arrange the chairs and tables strategically.
  • Lay down pieces of paper on the floor to serve as “safe” land.
  • Make the paper in different sizes for added challenge and spread them across the room.
  • To make the game even more challenging, you can use different construction paper colors and assign a time limit for staying on them.

5. Red Light, Green Light

Here’s another game to fill your classroom with laughter and giggles. Not only is this game fun and playable with lots of people, but it also helps your kids develop awareness, observation skills, and listening skills.

  • Mark your starting area and finish line.
  • The chosen leader stands at the finish line and gets to call out the red light or green light.
  • For the “green light,” the kids can all move toward the finish line. For “red light,” they need to stop and freeze in place.
  • Anyone caught still moving during the “red light” must go back to the starting area.
  • The first person to reach the finish line becomes the next leader.

To make the game easier for any students who are hard of hearing, the leader can also have their backs turned against the players during a green light and turn around during red light.

6. Charades

Now here’s a classic game perfect for the rainy season! This indoor game is also ideal for combining fun and games with your lessons. You and your class can take turns acting out and guessing animal names, places, historical figures, and more.

Charades can be played as a large group with the entire class. You can also spark your kids’ competitive spirit by dividing them into two groups and having them compete with who can guess more words. You also award more points for correct answers depending on how fast they guess it.

7. Indoor Basketball

Staying indoors doesn’t mean no outdoor games or sports at all. A lot of sports kids play outdoors can be played in the classroom with just a few tweaks to the rules. If you’ve got students who love playing basketball, you can make an indoor court by pushing tables and chairs to the side of the room.

Instead of hoops, you can set up a picnic or laundry basket on two opposite sides of the room. For the ball, they can use a beach ball or any other soft ball for safety. This means there’s no dribbling necessary, which may help reduce any injuries. The game is still good for boosting motor skills.

8. Heads Up!

Heads up is not only a great game for rainy and snowy days but it’s also a fun activity to give your students brain breaks while studying. This is a guessing game that may favor older kids, though. The game can be played by groups or by simply partnering students.

To play this, you’ll need a marker and several pieces of paper cut into rectangles. You may also need some masking tape.

  • Decide on the words your students need to guess. You can make a set of words based on a theme, like sports, books, classmates, and more.
  • Each pair of students take turns guessing their assigned word.
  • The paper with the word they are guessing is usually held in front of their forehead.
  • The guesser can only ask yes and no questions to get clues. They get 60 seconds to ask questions.
  • They need to guess as many words as possible to win.

If you’re playing the game with the entire class, you can also use the Heads Up app and your phone to generate random words for the students to guess.

9.  Newspaper Dance

Dance activities are always entertaining. For this particular game, you’ll need a newspaper or any other sheet of paper in a similar size, a speaker, and some fun music queued up.

Here’s how you play this game:

  • Have your students choose a partner.
  • Give a page of newspaper for each pair.
  • When the music is playing, the pairs need to dance around their newspaper.
  • When the music stops, the pairs need to jump onto the newspaper.
  • Both their feet must be on the paper. If even a small part of their feet is on the floor, they will need to sit the next rounds out. The same applies if they can’t balance on the paper and fall down.
  • Fold the newspaper in half before starting the next round of dancing.
  • Repeat until only one pair is left.

10. New and Classic Board Games

Indoor recess days may not happen frequently, but having a few classic board games stored and waiting to be used is always a good idea. This way, you’re also giving your more introverted students a more fun way to spend time with a small group of friends.

You can also ask your students to bring their favorite board games to school. This can even be a fun weekly event for your class! Let your students explore their options and choose which board games to play and who to play with.

11. Cosmic Kids Yoga

A lot of people raise their eyebrows when we suggest teaching younger children to do yoga. Still, we stand by this activity. While it isn’t as exciting as your typical indoor recess period activities, it’s a great option to help kids cool down after playing very active games.

Even if you don’t practice yoga yourself, there are many guides and interactive videos online. Cosmic Kids Yoga offers some easy poses to help your students burn some energy and calm their excitement over recess.

12. Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Rainy or snowy days are the perfect time to organize an indoor scavenger hunt. There are two ways you can go about this.

First is by hiding specific items throughout the classroom for students to find. Second is by giving students a list with item descriptions only, like something soft, something noisy, and more. Indoor scavenger hunts can help foster social skills, teamwork, and more.

13. Hot Potato

Hot Potato is another classic yet fun classroom game. You’ll definitely have a lot of loud laughing or even shouting while playing this game, especially with younger kids.

You’ll need a soft ball, a small bean bag, or any other small and soft item. All the children need to do is keep passing the ball to the next person without dropping it. However, whoever is holding the ball when the music stops will be out of the game.

14. Indoor Obstacle Course

Turn your classroom into an indoor obstacle course using the toys and equipment in your classroom — toys, pillows, hula hoops, chairs, tables, and more. Playing this game helps improve the gross motor skills and coordination of younger students.

In general, the goal of the game is to finish the obstacle course within the time limit. Alternatively, you can group the class into two and watch them compete for first place.

15. Paper Airplanes

Here is another easy activity to arrange on the fly — paper airplanes! All you need are some paper in different colors and a group of imaginative kids. If your students don’t know how to make paper airplanes, teach them the basic steps then encourage them to find creative ways to improve the basic design.

You can end the activity there and simply display their creations afterward. Or you can hold a paper airplane race to find out whose unique paper airplane design flies the farthest. This can help promote critical thinking and hone fine motor skills of your students.

16. Flyswatter Quiz Bee or Math Games

You can turn an indoor recess period into a fun learning experience. Level up your quiz bees, trivia games, or math games with the use of fly swatters and a large piece of paper.

On the paper, you can write down letter choices for multiple choice questions or the answers themselves. Divide students into two equal groups (or more if needed) and give each group a fly swatter.

Have them line up in front of their large answer paper and start asking questions. The first player to smack the right answers on their paper gets the point.

17. Simon Says

Simon Says is best played with a big group of kids though it can also be played with small groups. It’s an entertaining indoor game that almost everyone has played at least once. Additionally, it can help improve your students’ listening skills, awareness, and ability to follow instructions.

18. Musical Chairs

Musical chairs is a very similar game to freeze dance and newspaper dance. This time, instead of dancing in place or around a newspaper page, your students need to dance while going around a circle of chairs.

When the music stops, they need to find an empty chair to sit on. Whoever doesn’t have a seat, will be out and joins the rest of the class in watching the game unfold. And like with freeze dance, the last person remaining wins the game.

19. Hot or Cold

If you’re spending indoor recess time inside your classroom, playing Hot or Cold will help your students pass time while enjoying themselves. It’s easy to set up, too!

  • Choose a student to become the seeker or treasure hunter.
  • Ask the treasure hunter to go out of the classroom while you hide the “treasure”.
  • Once you’ve hidden the treasure well, you can let the seeker in.
  • While blindfolded, they’ll walk around the classroom while following the remaining students’ advice on where the treasure is hidden.
  • The other students will shout out “hot” or “cold” or “warmer” to give the seeker an idea whether they are getting close to the hidden item.

20. Arts and Craft Free Play

You can’t forget about arts and craft activities when talking about indoor recess ideas. There is an endless list of arts and crafts activities you can organize to keep your students occupied and happy.

Free drawing or painting activities may sound plain but it can help stimulate kids’ creativity. It’s also one of the best examples of unstructured play.

You can also teach kids how to make items like:

  • Macaroni jewelry
  • Paper bead jewelry
  • Masks from paper plates
  • Finger or hand puppets
  • Pipe cleaner flowers

21. Balloon Race

Balloon games are always a hit with kids. As long as you have a pack of balloons and an inflator pump, you won’t run out of emergency indoor games. Holding a balloon race is a great way to get the whole class excited and on their feet — even older kids.

Here’s how we love to do balloon races:

  • Divide your students into groups of five or more.
  • Place chairs equal to the number of groups in one end of the room.
  • Give each group a large balloon.
  • Each member of the group takes turns walking to their chair with the balloon between their legs, going around the chair, and returning to their group.
  • The next player in line gets the balloon and does the same.
  • When the last player takes his turn, instead of going back to the group, they take the balloon and sit on it to pop it.
  • The first team whose player pops their balloon wins the game.

22. Card Games

If your students are already around or nearing pre-teen age, then card games make for great rainy indoor activities. There are many card games kids can play with a traditional deck of cards. Some of the best ones to teach your students are:

  • Memory or concentration

Allowing your students to play physical trading card games, like Pokemon, may also be a great idea. These can be a nice, colorful alternative to traditional card games. Plus, it’s likely something your students already love and do.

23. Jigsaw Puzzle

Last but certainly not the least is the good, ol’ jigsaw puzzle. Depending on the size and difficulty of the puzzle you choose, this can give you hours or even days of play, teamwork, and fun. The more kids join the activity, the faster you can find the missing puzzle pieces and put them in their rightful place.

As a bonus, playing with jigsaw puzzles can help boost children’s brain development, fine motor skills, and more.

English Essay, Paragraph, Speech on “The Indoor Game I like the Best” for Kids, Students of Class 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 CBSE, ICSE Board Examination

The indoor game i like the best.

There are many indoor games. Some are ancient, like chess and draughts, and some are modern inventions like ludo, tiddly-winks, and ping-pong. Some are games of pure chance, like some card games, and some are games of skill, like chess. All such games are meant as amusements to pass the time, but some of them, while giving amusement give something more.

I do not much like card games; for I think that any game that depends mostly on chance, very soon loses its interest. Of course, there is a good deal of skill, or at any rate memory and shrewd guessing, required in some card games, like the bridge. But after all, luck has a great deal to do with winning: for even the best player cannot do much with a bad hand of cards, and even the worst must do something with a good hand. And whether we have a good hand or a bad hand is entirely a matter of chance. That is why, I suppose, people do not as a rule care for card games unless they can play for money. Only gambling can keep up an interest in cards.

My favourite indoor game is chess. Practically no chances come into chess; it is nearly all pure skill. And this is what gives chess its let interest. To be a good chess player, one must have great patience, must be able to look ahead and calculate what the result of every movement will be, and one must have great power of concentration. A game of chess is a battle, a wrestling match, between two minds. Although the two players sit perfectly still and scarcely speak a word, they are engaged in an exciting mental combat. And the cleverest man wins. Chess does not need gambling to make it interesting.

So chess is not a mere amusement, though it is very amusing. It is a fine form of mental exercise. It teaches one to think, to calculate, to look ahead, to read other people’s thoughts and intentions. Before he dares move a piece, the player has to ask himself-If I move my knight there, what will be the result? Will my opponent move up his bishop, or withdraw his queen, or play a pawn? If he does the first, will that put my king in danger? If he does the second, can I check his King? If he does the third, will he spoil my attack? And whatever he does, what shall I do next? — and so on and so on.

So, for real excitement and interest, and for real mental recreation, give me a game of chess.

Chess | My favourite Indoor Game | Essay | Information

December 18, 2017 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Along with study the other thing which holds a great position in conditioning a person’s personality is games. Games play an important role in maintaining a healthy mind, body and soul. Various games provide benefits in many ways. Some games involve a lot of physical movements.

We have games which involves mind power. There are two kinds of games. We have Outdoor and Indoor games. Outdoor games include games such as Cricket, Badminton, Football and Hockey etc. Indoor games include Chess, Ludo, Scramble, Table Tennis etc.

Indoor games basically involve mind power. Indoor games have the power to increase our reasoning. Indoor games increase our sensing ability. Chess is one such game.

There are games which require very high skill. People consider games to be of no use. It is not applicable for everyone. It is applicable for a portion of our country who think that games can lead to nowhere. There are people who think that games have no future.

These people have orthodox point of view. But they are very wrong in their thought process. Yes, there was a time when the games were given not much preference. But the time has changed a lot. There have been so much of modifications and developments.

We are still discovering new things every day.  There are some modernization in our living style. Everything can be taken as a medium to prosper in the future. Every-thing requires hard work to achieve the success. It is not that only education requires hard work. Games require these things equally.

chess essay

They are physically fit. They have good food habits. They know that what they have to eat. They know that what they have to avoid. This all leads to the proper functioning of our body. The metabolism is fine. When we play games we use our brain as well as our body.

These factors come into play when we are playing outdoor games. The scenario of indoor games is bit different from the outdoor games.

When we talk about the indoor games we can find that it requires less physical stamina but more of intellect. Chess is a game which requires a lot of concentration. Chess is a game which requires intellect. Chess is a game which requires our patience.

Each and every step that we take in this game is very important. Going onto the history of this game we can find some interesting facts. This game is almost about 1500years old. This is a really big time. This shows that this game has its emergence from very old era. It is not at all a new game. We have examples of it being played by the kings and the queens.

This could even have been a royal game to play since it was played by most of the royal people. This game is for all. It is not that only some people can play it. The thing is that it requires more of attention and intellect. People should be ready for any kind of changes in the game.

Not only they should be ready but also they should be able to retaliate to the changes. There are some clever moves to be taken in this game. It is believed that it was first originated in India. This game shifted to various other places. One such place is Persia. It is also believed by some of the people that this game emerged from China. But there are no strong evidences to prove this fact.

This is the best game to test our patience. This game has a square board. It comes in various forms. The platform on which the game is played can be of paper. It can be of glass. It can be of wood and of any material. The platform is square in shape.

The platform which is square in shape has small square box evenly distributed throughout the platform. The squares inside the platform are of two colors. They are in white and black color. Two people at a time can play this game. The two parties have their share of the pieces of the game through which the game is played. All the material is either of black or of white color.

There is a king in this game which is to be killed. The player who is able to kill the king of the player wins the game. In the history the chess was largely taken up by the Muslims. This game can be played at any point of time. Whenever we are free we can play this game.

Those who play chess are said to have a higher spatial ability. The chess board is almost equivalent to battle field. The players have to be alert about their every move. One can feel the battle going on. Though it does not have any weapons or the armors but the playing pieces are the weapons. There are soldiers, horses, camels in the game. Each has their own way of taking the step.

We have many great players in this game from our country. There is this big game player  Vishwanathan Anand . His name is also there in the world record. He is one of the greatest player. But the unfortunate thing about that is our country is not able to give them their worth.

Fun indoor classroom games for 5th graders.

I kind of feel like "fun" and "indoor recess" is a bit of an oxymoron. Indoor recess days used to stress me out, but I've come up with a couple tried and true indoor recess ideas that are great for those dreaded rainy days. Sometimes I will divide students into small groups and let them choose from a list of activities, other times we will play whole group games. Either way, older kids need breaks too (and so do we). Here is a list of some indoor games and brain break activities for those dreaded rainy days.

Would You Rather - Exercise Edition

I love these would you rather exercise games. Basically, the screen comes up and shows two familiar objects - let's say Doritos and Cheetos. If you would rather eat Doritos do jumping jacks for 30 seconds, if you would rather Cheetos, do lunges for 30 seconds. They LOVE it. I fully expect eye rolling from several fifth graders but nope, all the kids join in and they laugh the whole time they're doing it. Here are a couple "Would You Rather" links:

Would You Rather? Workout!

Would You Rather? Exercise!

Dancing takes some time for the class to warm up to depending on how outgoing they are and how familiar they are with one another. I like to play Just Dance on Youtube. Here are a couple my kids have loved in the past. It depends on the class. In some years, students led the dances while the rest of the class watched. Other years, its just about everyone joining in. I use Just Dance for brain breaks and not just during indoor recess time, because let's face it even big kids need to get up and wiggle.

Kinect Star Wars, "I'm Hans Solo" Dancing

Kinect Star Wars: Galactic Dance Off - Empire Today(Extended)

There's also Go Noodle. If you choose a dance from Go Noodle, you know it will be clean and appropriate whereas you definitely want to preview the Just Dance videos. I feel like Go Noodle is geared towards younger students. They have fun music and interactive videos, but the characters and moves are pretty primary

Heads Up 7 Up

Heads Up, 7 Up is a classic whole class game. You select 7 students to come to the front of the room to be the "pickers". You say, "Heads down, thumbs up. Let's play 7 up. The rest of the class puts their heads down on top of their desks with their thumbs sticking up. The "pickers" tiptoe through the room and gently tap a thumb. When 7 kids have been picked, they stand and one by one, guess who picked them. Can't go wrong with Heads Up, 7 Up.

Four Corners

I don't like Four Corners as much as Heads Up, 7 Up, but my kids are always begging to play it. Four Corners is another whole group active game. One student stands in the middle of the room and counts to 10 (or 20). All the other kids have to go to one corner of the room. When the counter is finished, he calls a corner , "corner number one". Every student in that corner is out and has to sit down. The game continues until there is only one student standing.

Silent Speedball

Traditional Silent speedball is a quick, fun game that requires focus and works with gross motor skills. You need a squishy ball or some kind of soft ball (foam). Students throw the ball to one another. You're "out" if you make a sound, throw the ball bad, or don't catch a ball thrown to you. The last person who isn't "out" wins.

Personally, I try to make the game more inclusive. I like to play silent speedball in a "Minute to Win It" fashion. I set the "Minute to Win It" timer (search online) and they have to work together to see how many catches they can make in 1 minute - silently, of course 😉. Then, I add in challenges like, you can't catch it a second time until everyone has touched it or boy, girl, boy girl. When they get better at the game, I add in 2 balls.

Once my students learn to play Oh No, 99, they beg to play it all the time.

This is a simple 2 player game, but one of the best card games for reinforcing math skills in a fun way.

Goal: To force the other player to go over the score of 99.

To play, start with a deck of cards with jokers removed. You will need to write the designated card values on the board or give groups the direction page.

Person 1 shuffles and passes 4 cards to each player. The rest of the deck remains face down in the middle.

Player 2 places a card face up in the middle and announces the number. Players take turns placing cards and adding to subtracting to the accumulating score.

Each time a player places a card down, they need to replace it with the card from the face down stack.

The first person to force the other to go over 99, wins.

Board Games

Board games are a novelty to kids now. Since they don't really play them at home anymore, they are a perfect rainy day activity for your classroom. Here are some board game ideas. I've asked people on Facebook to donate old games they have at home. I've gotten games at Goodwill, but I'm always afraid they are missing pieces. Here are some of the games I have in my classroom, but the list is endless:

Chutes and Ladders

Battle Ship

Drawing with online instruction

This is a great option if you don't really have enough time to get out the games, but you want the entire class to have something to do. Pass out a sheet of paper to each student. Art For Kids Hub is a free website that has guided drawing lessons in short videos. It is very kid friendly and every student ends up with an adorable drawing. You could even mount the pictures on construction paper and place them on a bulletin board.

Fortune Tellers

Do you remember making fortune tellers as a kid? Once my students learn how to make them, they make a million of them. Here is a great video for modeling how to make a fortune teller.

I know we don't love putting our kids on technology. They get so much of it at home and in school, but sometimes I give in and they LOVE playing games on the computer. Here are a couple great go-to alternatives for older students in elementary.

essay on indoor games for class 5

Blooket.com

Blooket is an alternative to Kahoot. To play, go to Blooket.com. I believe you need to make a free account. Then, you pick a trivia topic and one of the unique game modes. My students love the game Crypto Hack, but there are probably about 10 to choose from. Students join the game on their device and answer questions. Even though they are on the computer, my students interact the whole time and have so much fun with Blooket.

Math Playground.com

There are a lot of math games on this site, but there are also just for fun games. My students seem to find the no-so-math games (especially my boys), however, they laugh and talk to each other the whole time they are playing. The site is school friendly and engaging. It definitely provides a brain break for kids.

Saved the best for last? This might be my all-time favorite website. With Pixton, students create their own comic adventures. They create an avatar that looks like them, they can interact and work together to create a comic/graphic novel together. All you have to do is sign them up they do everything. It is $99 a year. Our media specialist bought it and all of our 4th and 5th grade classes LOVED it!!!! Definitely worth checking out!

Well, there you have it, my list of top 10 (well more than 10) best indoor recess ideas for 5th graders. If there is something that you love ❤️ doing during indoor recess that keeps kids buys and keeps your sanity in tact, I would love to hear about it!

Essay, Paragraph, Speech on “Indoor Games” Complete English Essay for Class 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, Graduation classes.

Indoor Games

Indoor games were originally invented to help people amuse themselves within the confines of their homes. They were invented to pass time at home when, either the weather was bad or, when, sickness confined a person to his or her bed. Indoor games also meant, mothers could keep a watchful eye on their children while doing their housework.

Indoor games can be briefly categorized into three types viz. Card games, board games, and games that involve physical movement. Card games are those that are played with a pack of 52 cards like trump and trick. Most card games are played with a pack of 52 cards. Card games may have originated in India but they are played all over the world. Various kinds of card games are played using the same 52 cards. Bridge, Rummy, Whist are some of the card games played. Uno is another card game which has gotten popular in our times and it is played with a set of 100 cards.

Board games are very old too. Chess evolved in India 1000 years ago. It is played all over the world and is considered a game of the mind. The world chess championships are organized on a challenge basis. Fide stages preliminary rounds every two or three years to determine a challenger, who plays the reigning champion in a 12-match contest. Scrabble is a crossword game in which points are scored by forming interlocking words on a board of 15 by 15 squares. It has become one of the most popular board games in the world played by the young and old alike. It is probably the only board game which improves your word skills. Other board games like Ludo and snakes and ladders are played with a dice and find favour especially with the kids; as being games of chance they do not require much skill. Trivial pursuit is a board game in which players progress by giving correct answers for general knowledge questions on a variety of topics found on its cards. Trivial pursuit is one game that imparts knowledge to a child on varied topics. Monopoly is another board game for two or more players aimed at acquisition of property. Both board games and card games can be played by the young and old alike. Board games and card games serve as good entertainment for those who are sick or physically handicapped and cannot play active sports.

Indoor games that involve physical activity are the games that make up the third group of indoor games. Badminton, table tennis, basketball are some examples of indoor games played the world over. Basketball was created as an active sport to be played indoors in the winter. Badminton is considered as the most tiring sport and table tennis calls for a lot of deftness, skill and speed on the part of its players.

Indoor games allow one to play when one cannot venture outdoors. Indoor games mean you can stay at home and still play. Although they cannot substitute for outdoor games, indoor games are capable of providing resourceful entertainment in closed environments.

27 Classroom Games Students Will Want To Play Again and Again

Practice important skills … and have fun!

Classroom games feature

The classroom games you choose to play with students may become their favorite memories. (I still remember playing Heads Up, Seven Up in Mrs. Merar’s first grade class!) Classroom games are a great way to build collaboration and community and practice important skills. Plus, they’re fun!

Benefits of Classroom Games

Classroom games capture what kids are naturally good at—playing—to improve other skills. Games support kids’ executive functioning skills , things like planning, organization, turn-taking, and problem-solving are all skills that students need to be successful. Playing games, from Memory to Monopoly, gives kids experience in focus and concentration, working memory, and flexibility in safe spaces where they can grow and stretch these skills. Plus, they’re a fun way to learn more about how your students think and work together.

In addition to all the classroom games listed below, check out our lists of most loved educational board games and best board games for 6-to-12-year-olds .

Here are our favorite classroom games that you can use to teach, reteach, and engage students.

Games for Practicing Academic Skills

Classroom games can help students practice things that they need to know—like multiplication tables, vocabulary words, and science facts. They’re great ways to do a quick review or practice for a quiz.

Math (or Fact) Baseball

Divide the class into two teams. One team is “at bat” and scores runs by answering questions that are worth one, two, or three bases. You “pitch” the questions using flash cards. If the at-bat team answers correctly, they move around the baseball field and rack up runs. If the at-bat team does not answer correctly, the defending team can respond correctly to earn an out. Once the at-bat team has three outs, they switch.

You can also put students into pairs and have them play a partner version.

Why we love it:  This game is great for upper elementary students who are able to follow the game and will love the strategy of earning runs.

Beach Ball Toss

beach ball with writing on each side for students to practice answering questions during a classroom game

Write questions on the sides of a plastic beach ball. You can write questions about a story (plot, theme, setting, characters, structure), about math (write numbers 1 through 6 on the beach ball and students have to select a math problem based on the number they choose), or simply silly questions that students can answer. As students catch the ball, they answer the question. When they’ve answered, they throw the ball to the next player. If you’re working with material that may be new for some kids, you can give each kid one “pass” and they can share the problem-solving with another student.

Why we love it: It’s flexible and works with students’ eye-hand coordination.

paper covered with drawings that students have done as part of a pictionary game. drawings including a pumpkin for halloween and a turtle.

Create a list of topics that students can visualize (think: science concepts, vocabulary words). Students work either in two teams for the entire class or in small groups that are divided into two. One student selects a card and has to draw an image that the other team uses to guess the word. The rest of the group guesses the term that’s being drawn. Add a timer for an added challenge. Provide additional differentiation by allowing students to provide one, two, or more letters in the word as well.

Why we love it: Kids who have strengths in drawing and thinking outside the box can really shine.

There’s the Simon Says you know from the playground and the Simon Says classroom game. In this Simon Says, tell students to do something that lets them show off what they’ve learned or practices a skill. So you might say, Simon Says spell “conundrum.” Or Simon Says solve this equation. Play either as a whole class with you as Simon or in small groups with cards of prompts that students can use when they take turns being Simon.

Why we love it: In addition to practicing skills, students also practice listening and impulse control.

20 Questions

Prepare cards with related words or topics. Group students into teams of two to four students. One at a time, students choose a card and the others have to try to guess what the card is by asking questions that can only be answered with a yes or no. Keep track of how many questions are asked, because you’re only allowed 20 questions to get to the answer. Have students put aside the cards they didn’t get for review.

Why we love it: Students practice working memory as they add new information to what they already know.

Also, Guess in 10 is a great 20 Questions–style game played around various topics, including animals, countries, and cities.

Buy it: Guess in 10 at Amazon

Memory is a game that students can do with any content—vocabulary words paired with their definitions, chemistry terms paired with images that depict them, or text structures paired with graphic organizers. First, have students create card pairs. Shuffle the cards and put them on the table. Take turns flipping cards over and finding the matching pairs.

Why we love it: Memory is so versatile you can use this game with anything from procedures to vocabulary to history facts.

charades cards that students could act out, including riding a bike and raising your hand to play during a classroom game

In charades, students choose a card and act out the information on the card. For a unit on weather, you may have the words cloud , tornado , or hurricane for example. Scaffold this game with three rounds. In the first round, students can explain the topics using a few words. Then, in the second round, they can only use one word to describe what they are acting out. And in the third round, they have to be completely silent, using only their bodies to act out each word.

Why we love it: This game gets students up and moving around and thinking creatively about how to show what they know.

Put students in the hot seat to review the plot points of a story, practice answering questions, or review for a science test. First, choose vocabulary to review. Then, select a student to sit in the hot seat. The other students ask questions about the topic or information. The student in the hot seat must answer as quickly as possible. If their answer is correct, they stay in the hot seat. If they get a wrong answer, they can pass the seat to someone else. (You can take the pressure out of this game, which can make some students nervous, by removing the timed aspect.)

Why we love it: Hot Seat is a great way to get students to practice information they need to have right at the tip of their tongue.

Scattergories

Scattergories can be played for academics or for fun. It also helps students improve their creative thinking. You’ll need a list of at least 10 categories—mix serious topics with silly ones. Then, select a letter of the alphabet. Have students brainstorm words to go with each category that starts with that letter. So, if the categories you have are Weather, Bees, and Favorite Places, and the letter is H, students might write: hurricane, hive, Hawaii. Give a set amount of time for students to complete their own brainstorm, then share out. Students can rack up points for the number of categories that they complete. And sharing out helps them connect their brainstorming with everyone else’s.

Why we love it: The boundaries that kids have to work in when playing Scattergories is ideal for inspiring creativity.

Fix It Relay Race

fix-it game cards that have sentences with a grammar error on them for students to fix to use during classroom games

Divide the class into teams of four to six students, and prepare sentences that each have an error—it could be a factual error for content classes or grammar or spelling mistakes for language classes. Arrange students in a line, with students standing a few feet apart. The first student in each team must correct one mistake in the sentence they are given. Then, they pass the card to the next teammate. The next student corrects another mistake. This continues until each team member has seen the card and they think all the errors are corrected. Then they run the card to the front to complete the relay.

Why we love it: Teams work together to complete each task.

Buy it: Fix It Sentences at Teachers Pay Teachers

This is another classic game that can be adapted to any academic content. Each student gets a card that is taped to their back or their forehead. The card has a name of a person you’re studying or a topic on it. Then, the students circulate and ask questions of other people to try to figure out who or what is taped to them.

Why we love it: This game is easily differentiated by providing students with personalities that you know they are familiar with, and by providing them with questions to ask or a checklist of personalities that they can be thinking about as they figure out who everyone is.

Word Scramble

Each student or group has a word. The goal is to pull as many words out of the original word as possible within the time limit.

Why we love it: Word Scramble encourages flexibility, and students may be surprised at what they see in each game.

Stickyball Bingo

Create a bingo board on your whiteboard with the words that you want students to work with or the math problems you want them to do. Then, have students throw a sticky ball at the board to select their game.

Why we love it: When their aim is poor, students may have to answer questions that push them out of their comfort zone.

Musical Chairs

Prepare a list of discussion questions or prompts. Students choose a card, then walk around the room while music plays. When the music stops, they find a partner and work on the questions they see on the card. You can prepare cards with math or science problems, questions from social studies, getting-to-know-you questions, or silly questions. Changing the type of questions that students are working with keeps this game fresh.

Why we love it: Musical chairs really gets students up and moving, and if you remove the loss of a chair each time, all students can stay in the game.

Check out these school-appropriate songs kids love .

Flashcard Duel

Students each have a set of flash cards and use them to “duel.” In pairs, students show each other a flash card one at a time. If they answer the card right, they get to keep the card. If they don’t, their partner keeps the card.

Why we love it: It’s fast-paced and easy for students to pick up and play during a few minutes of downtime.

Classroom Games for Communication

Games that require students to talk and listen to each other are great ways to encourage communication.

Yes, No, Stand Up

Have a list of sentences prepared. When you read a sentence, students stand if their response is yes and stay seated if it’s no.

Why we love it: Students practice listening skills and inhibition by standing or not in response to your questions.

Blind Square

Use a long rope and blindfolds. Have students stand in groups of four, then put the blindfolds on and hold the rope between them so it creates a square. They have to work together to put the rope down on the floor in front of them.

Why we love it: This game is great for middle schoolers to learn to work together.

Odd One Out

Prepare this game with a set of words or phrases written on slips of paper. Have students work in pairs or small groups to categorize the words or phrases as they relate to each other. Students have completed the game when they find the odd one out. So, students may have a group of four people from the Revolutionary War but only three who were presidents, so the one who is not a president is the odd one out.

Why we love it: Odd One Out requires students to use critical thinking and working memory as they come to each answer.

Can You Hear Me Now?

This is a fun warm-up or cool-down for the day. It’s also a great classroom game to play if you’re teaching virtually. Play as a class or in groups. Each student takes a turn describing an item for the others to draw one step at a time. For example, if the object were “cat,” the description might be: Draw a circle. Draw two triangles on top of the circle. And so on until a cat is drawn. It’ll surprise students how their directions are interpreted, and how hard it is to get people to follow their directions.

Why we love it: This is a humorous way to reinforce that students need to be clear in their directions and listen to yours.

Classroom Games for Collaboration and Team Building

Games that require teamwork are ideal for helping kids practice collaboration in short bursts and around a common, if silly, goal.

Minute To Win It

Minute to win it games including cereal box puzzle and boy trying to keep balloons in the air.

Challenge your class to compete in tasks that can take under a minute. You could:

  • Speed-stack paper cups.
  • Roll a coin between fork tongs.
  • Transfer pom-poms with chopsticks.
  • Build a tower out of marshmallows and toothpicks.
  • Pass a balloon from one person to another without using your hands.
  • Put together a puzzle.

Why we love it: It’s a quick way to engage students and shift students into a positive frame of mind.

Over the Electric Fence

Put two chairs in a row, and tell students that they are connected by a wire that is 3 feet high. Even better, string a rope 3 feet high. Students have to imagine that this is an electric fence and if they touch it they are dead. They’ll help everyone get over the fence and work together to do so. Make it even more challenging by telling students that they have to hold hands while moving everyone from one side of the fence to the other.

Why we love it: Students will have to slow down and figure out exactly how to solve the problem.

Create a square in your classroom using tape. Then, place plastic cups or cones around the inside of the square. This area is the minefield. Break students into pairs. One student is blindfolded and the other leads them. The students have to cross the minefield without touching or knocking down the plastic cups. The non-blindfolded student gives directions and the blindfolded student must follow them to cross the minefield without blowing up a “mine” or knocking over a cone.

Why we love it: Students will get out of their comfort level while playing this game.

Start with general everyday scenes (eating dinner, brushing teeth). Have two people act out a scene while everyone else watches. After a time, stop the scene and have someone swap out for a new player. Then, they have to change how the scene is being done. They could, for example, turn eating dinner into taking care of a pet. Once students are familiar with the game, make it more challenging with prompts from the book you’re reading or history scenarios (e.g., Washington crossing the Delaware turns into the French Revolution).

Why we love it: This game gives older students the opportunity to work with a variety of people and get creative connecting scene to scene.

Classroom Games for Fun

Sometimes you need classroom games that simply let students have fun and blow off steam!

Freeze Dance

This is a great brain break. Put on music and dance (challenge kids to a Floss-off or the Macarena to get everyone moving). Then, pause the music and any student who unfreezes before the music starts again is out.

Why we love it: You’ll see some students come out of their shells once the music starts.

Heads Up, Seven Up

Why we love it: This is a classroom game we remember from our elementary school years, and now we’re passing it along!

Tic-Tac-Toe

Use a version of tic-tac-toe during the dreaded indoor recess or as a brain break.

Tic-tac-toe with Hula-Hoops:

Human Tic-Tac-Toe:

Why we love it: Whichever version you choose, tic-tac-toe is a quick game that’s always a winner.

Place a number of objects (up to 20) on a table (or post on a slide with 20 words or pictures) and have students take one minute to try to memorize as many as they can. Then, cover the objects or hide the slide and have students write down as many as they can remember. Play this game once a week or so and see how students improve their memory strategies.

Why we love it: Students will sharpen their focus and memory skills trying to remember as many objects as possible.

5 solar eclipse activities to do with children

From building an eclipse viewer to using the sun to pop balloons, here's a child-friendly activity guide for April's eclipse

By Abigail Beall

6 April 2024

essay on indoor games for class 5

There are plenty of fun eclipse activities to do with kids

Edwin Remsberg/Alamy

If you are planning to enjoy the total solar eclipse on 8 April with your children, here are a few activities you can do with them before and during the eclipse, to help them understand what causes a solar eclipse and get the most out of the experience.

1. Build an eclipse viewer

On the days leading up to the eclipse, you and your children can get excited about the big event by building an eclipse viewer . There are a few ways to do this – the first of which is a simple pinhole camera using two pieces of paper. Cut a hole in one piece of paper and cover it with aluminium foil, then poke a small hole in the foil. On the day of the eclipse, hold the paper up to let the sun beam through the hole and it will project a version of the eclipse onto a second piece of paper you place on the ground.

A slightly more complicated version involves a cereal or shoe box, placing paper at one end and cutting two holes in the other end. Over one of the two holes, you place some tin foil and, again, pierce it so that the sunlight can get through. More details on how to make both versions here .

Solar Eclipse 2024

On 8 April a total solar eclipse will pass over Mexico, the US and Canada. Our special series is covering everything you need to know, from how and when to see it to some of the weirdest eclipse experiences in history.

2. Build a solar eclipse model

Another activity that can be done ahead of the eclipse is building, or acting out, a model of the sun, moon and Earth to understand what a solar eclipse is . To build it, all you need is three sticks and three balls to place on top of the sticks. You can paint them or colour them in so that they resemble the sun, moon and Earth. Make sure the sun is bigger than the moon. Then, you can show your kids what an eclipse is by placing the sun in the centre, and moving Earth around the sun and the moon around Earth. When the three line up, with the moon in between the sun and Earth, we get a solar eclipse. When the moon is on the other side of Earth from the sun, we get lunar eclipses.

Your kids can also act out a solar eclipse. Give one of them a torch or flashlight, making them act as the sun, and ask them to shine the torch on a wall. The other, who is the moon, can move around until they block the torch light. They can both play around with moving forwards and backwards, to show why the distances between the moon, Earth and sun matter when it comes to eclipses.

3. Pop a balloon using sunlight

This is something that can be done on any sunny day. But on the day you are waiting for the total eclipse, you can show your kids how to use the power of sunlight to pop a balloon. You need a balloon and a magnifying glass for this activity. Blow up the balloon and then hold the magnifying glass up so that it magnifies the sunlight onto the balloon. Wait for a few minutes and, eventually, the balloon will pop. You can also make this more exciting by blowing up a white balloon inside a black one, and doing the same trick. The black balloon should pop, leaving the white balloon intact inside. You can use this to explain how black surfaces absorb sunlight, while light surfaces reflect them.

4. Play with shadows

On the day of the eclipse, while you are waiting for totality, the partial eclipse phase will last a few hours. You and your kids can get excited about the eclipse by noticing how shadows change, and playing around with this. If you have a tree nearby, look at the shadows it casts on the ground throughout the eclipse and you will see that they start to look like a sun with a bite taken out of it. This also works by crossing your fingers over each other and casting shadows on the ground. Another way to show the eclipse through shadows is using a colander, or anything with small holes in it. As the eclipse progresses, the shadows cast will start to take on the shape of the eclipse. You can punch a series of holes in a piece of paper to spell out a word or your kids’ names in these crescent shapes.

5. Draw shadows

This is another activity that can be done in the hours leading up to and after totality, again making the most of the interesting shadows created by a partially eclipsed sun. You can lay a big white piece of paper or sheet on the ground, and ask your kids to draw the shadows cast by different objects. If you do this at the start of the partial phase, and again closer to totality, they will be able to see how these shadows change as the eclipse progresses. You should notice that, in the lead-up to totality, shadows become much clearer as the amount of ambient light is reduced.
