Environmental Pollution: Causes and Consequences Essay

Environmental pollution is the unwarranted discharge of mass or energy into the planet’s natural resource pools, such as land, air, or water, which detriments the environment’s ecological stability and the health of the living things that inhabit it. There is an intensified health risk and pollution in middle and low-income countries due to the increased use of pesticides, industrialization, the introduction of nitrogen-based fertilizers, forest fires, urbanization, and inadequate waste management (Appannagari, 2017). Air pollution, lead and chemicals exposure, hazardous waste exposure, and inappropriate e-waste disposal all result in unfavorable living conditions, fatal illnesses, and ecosystem destruction. The essay will provide an overview of pollution and proffer solutions to combating pollution for a sustainable environment and health.

In addition to hindering economic development and considerably accelerating climate change, pollution exacerbates poverty and inequality in urban and rural areas. The most pain is always experienced by the poor, who cannot afford to protect themselves against pollution’s harmful effects. The main environmental factor contributing to sickness and early mortality is pollution due to premature deaths resulting from pollution (Appannagari, 2017). Due to the unacceptably high cost to human capital and health, as well as the resulting GDP losses, pollution must be addressed. Through initiatives like reducing black carbon and methane emissions, which are responsible for air pollution and climate change, pollution management can also significantly contribute to climate change mitigation (Appannagari, 2017). Additionally, pollution control can promote competitiveness through, for instance, job growth, increased energy efficiency, better transportation, and sustainable urban and rural development. Below are the various approaches for solutions to health and pollution problems.

First, governments should evaluate pollution as a national and international priority and integrate it into the city and country planning process. Pollution affects the health and well-being of societies and, as such, cannot be solely viewed as an environmental issue (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). All levels of government should give pollution prevention a high priority, incorporate it into development planning, and tie it to commitments regarding climate change, SDGs, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Some options are both affordable and offer good returns on investment.

Secondly, governments should increase funding for pollution control and prioritize it by health impacts. There should be a significant increase in the financing for pollution management in low- and middle-income nations, both from national budgets and international development organizations (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). The most effective international support for pollution reduction is when it mobilizes additional actions and funding from others. Examples include helping towns and nations that are quickly industrializing concerning technical capacity building, regulatory and enforcement support, and support for direct actions to save lives. Monitoring financing initiatives are necessary to determine their cost-effectiveness and to raise accountability.

Thirdly, organizations should work to build multicultural partnerships for pollution control. Public-private partnerships and interagency cooperation can be powerful tools in creating clean technology and energy sources that will ultimately prevent pollution at its source (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). Collaborations between ministries that include the ministries of finance, energy, development, agriculture, and transport, as well as the ministries of health and the environment, are crucial in pollution control. Governments should promote monitoring systems that could identify and apportion pollution sources, measure pollution levels, guide enforcement, and assess progress toward goals. The use of new technology in pollution monitoring, such as data mining and satellite images, can boost effectiveness, broaden the monitoring area, and cut costs.

One of the main issues facing the world in the current period is pollution. Natural resources are depleting daily due to car emissions, new technologies, factories, and chemicals added to food. All of these factors seriously harm the world. However, the problems caused by pollution can be prevented by building multicultural partnerships, increasing funding for pollution control, integrating it into the country’s planning process, and adopting new technology for monitoring pollution. Preventing pollution lowers the cost to the environment and the economy.

Essay on Environmental Pollution

The environment is the surrounding of an organism. The environment in which an organism lives is made up of various components like air, water, land, etc. These components are found in fixed proportions to create a harmonious balance in the environment for the organism to live in. Any kind of undesirable and unwanted change in the proportions of these components can be termed as pollution. This issue is increasing with every passing year. It is an issue that creates economic, physical, and social troubles. The environmental problem that is worsening with each day needs to be addressed so that its harmful effects on humans as well as the planet can be discarded.

Causes of Environmental Pollution

With the rise of the industries and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of employment, there has been a regular increase in the problem of proper housing and unhygienic living conditions. These reasons have given rise to factors that cause pollution.

Environmental pollution is of five basic types namely, Air, Water, Soil, and Noise pollution.

Air Pollution: Air pollution is a major issue in today’s world. The smoke pouring out of factory chimneys and automobiles pollute the air that we breathe in. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are emitted with this smoke which mixes with air and causes great harm to the human body, flora, and fauna. The dry-farm waste, dry grass, leaves, and coal used as domestic fuels in our villages also produce harmful gases. Acid rain occurs due to an excess of sulphur dioxide in the air.

The Main Sources of Air Pollution are as Follows:

Automobile pollution

Industrial air pollution

Burning garbage

Brick kilns

Indoor air pollution

Decomposed animals and plants

Radioactive elements

Water Pollution: Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental issues. The waste products from the growing industries and sewage water are not treated properly before disposing of the wastewater into the rivers and other water bodies, thus leading to water pollution. Agricultural processes with excess fertilizers and pesticides also pollute the water bodies.

The Main Sources of Water Pollution as Follows:

Marine commerce.

Industrial effluents joining seas and oceans.

Dumping of radioactive substances into seawater.

Sewage is disposed of into the sea by rivers.

Offshore oil rigs.

Recreational activities.

Agricultural pollutants are disposed of into the water bodies.

Soil or Land Pollution: Soil pollution or land pollution results from the deposition of solid waste, accumulation of biodegradable material, deposition of chemicals with poisonous chemical compositions, etc on the open land. Waste materials such as plastics, polythene, and bottles, cause land pollution and render the soil infertile. Moreover, the dumping of dead bodies of animals adds to this issue. Soil pollution causes several diseases in man and animals like Cholera, Dysentery, Typhoid, etc.

The Main Causes of Soil Pollution are as Follows:

Industrial waste

Urban commercial and domestic waste

Chemical fertilizers

Biomedical waste

Noise Pollution: With an increasing population, urbanization, and industrialization, noise pollution is becoming a serious form of pollution affecting human life, health, and comfort in daily life. Horns of vehicles, loudspeakers, music systems, and industrial activities contribute to noise pollution.

The Main Sources of Noise Pollution as Follows:

The machines in the factories and industries produce whistling sounds, crushing noise, and thundering sounds.

Loudspeakers, horns of vehicles.

Blasting of rocks and earth, drilling tube wells, ventilation fans, and heavy earth-moving machinery at construction sites.

How Pollution Harms Health and Environment

The lives of people and other creatures are affected by environmental pollution, both directly and indirectly. For centuries, these living organisms have coexisted with humans on the planet.

1. Effect on the Environment

Smog is formed when carbon and dust particles bind together in the air, causing respiratory problems, haze, and smoke. These are created by the combustion of fossil fuels in industrial and manufacturing facilities and vehicle combustion of carbon fumes.

Furthermore, these factors impact the immune systems of birds, making them carriers of viruses and diseases. It also has an impact on the body's system and organs.

2.  Land, Soil, and Food Effects

The degradation of human organic and chemical waste harms the land and soil. It also releases chemicals into the land and water. Pesticides, fertilisers, soil erosion, and crop residues are the main causes of land and soil pollution.

3. Effects on water

Water is easily contaminated by any pollutant, whether it be human waste or factory chemical discharge. We also use this water for crop irrigation and drinking. They, too, get polluted as a result of infection. Furthermore, an animal dies as a result of drinking the same tainted water.

Furthermore, approximately 80% of land-based pollutants such as chemical, industrial, and agricultural waste wind up in water bodies.

Furthermore, because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly.

4. Food Reaction

Crops and agricultural produce become poisonous as a result of contaminated soil and water. These crops are laced with chemical components from the start of their lives until harvest when they reach a mass level. Due to this, tainted food has an impact on our health and organs.

5. Climate Change Impact

Climate change is also a source of pollution in the environment. It also has an impact on the ecosystem's physical and biological components.

Ozone depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and global warming are all examples of environmental pollution. Because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly. Furthermore, their consequences may be fatal for future generations. The unpredictably cold and hot climate impacts the earth’s natural system.

Furthermore, earthquakes, starvation, smog, carbon particles, shallow rain or snow, thunderstorms, volcanic eruptions, and avalanches are all caused by climate change, caused entirely by environmental pollution.

How to Minimise Environmental Pollution?

To minimise this issue, some preventive measures need to be taken.

Principle of 3R’s: To save the environment, use the principle of 3 R’s; Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

Reuse products again and again. Instead of throwing away things after one use, find a way to use them again.  Reduce the generation of waste products.

Recycle: Paper, plastics, glass, and electronic items can be processed into new products while using fewer natural resources and lesser energy.

To prevent and control air pollution, better-designed equipment, and smokeless fuels should be used in homes and industries. More and more trees should be planted to balance the ecosystem and control greenhouse effects.

Noise pollution can be minimised by better design and proper maintenance of vehicles. Industrial noise can be reduced by soundproofing equipment like generators, etc.

To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance.

Several measures can be adopted to control water pollution. Some of them are water consumption and usage that can be minimized by altering the techniques involved. Water should be reused with treatment.

The melting icebergs in Antarctica resulted in rising sea levels due to the world's environmental pollution, which had become a serious problem due to global warming, which had become a significant concern. Rising carbon pollution poses a risk for causing natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, and other natural disasters.

The Hiroshima-Nagasaki and Chernobyl disasters in Russia have irreversibly harmed humanity. Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible.

Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible. More public awareness campaigns are being established to educate people about the hazards of pollution and the importance of protecting our environment. Greener lifestyles are becoming more popular; for example, energy-efficient lighting, new climate-friendly autos, and the usage of wind and solar power are just a few examples.

Governments emphasise the need to plant more trees, minimise the use of plastics, improve natural waste recovery, and reduce pesticide use. This ecological way of living has helped humanity save other creatures from extinction while making the Earth a greener and safer ecology.

 Conclusion

It is the responsibility of every individual to save our planet from these environmental contamination agents. If preventive measures are not taken then our future generation will have to face major repercussions. The government is also taking steps to create public awareness. Every individual should be involved in helping to reduce and control pollution.

Environmental Pollution Essay

Pollution is the presence and inclusion of unwanted items in the environment. The state of the environment is altered when it has become contaminated with potentially dangerous compounds as a result of human activity. Water, air, and land are dangerously affected by the pollution. Here are a few sample essays on environmental pollution:

100 Words Essay on Environmental Pollution

200 words essay on environmental pollution, 500 words essay on environmental pollution.

Environmental Pollution Essay

When it comes to protecting the environment, awareness is the key. As more and more people become aware of the causes, types, and impacts of environmental pollution, they are more likely to take steps to prevent it. Air pollution is created as a result of burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Water pollution results from industrial activities, such as the dumping of chemicals into rivers and lakes, as well as from agricultural runoff. Land pollution is caused by the misuse of land and improper disposal of waste. The causes of environmental pollution are numerous and varied. Some of the main culprits are industrial activities, burning of fossil fuels, use of pesticides, and deforestation.

Awareness and taking necessary resolving steps is essential when it comes to protecting the environment from the impacts of environmental pollution. By teaching people the importance of taking steps to prevent environmental pollution, we can ensure a brighter future for our planet. We must understand the causes of environmental pollution, the types of pollution, the impact it has on the environment, and how we can prevent it.

Causes | Environmental pollution is the contamination of the environment through the emissions of pollutants including harmful gases, chemicals, and particulate matter. It is caused by human activities such as burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial pollution. These activities have caused global warming, acid rain, and water and air pollution, leading to global environmental degradation.

Types | There are different types of environmental pollution. The most common type is air pollution, which is caused by burning of fuels and other industrial activities. Water pollution is another common type of pollution which is caused by sewage and industrial waste. Soil pollution is caused by overuse of pesticides and other chemicals. Noise pollution is caused by traffic, construction activities, and industrial noise. Light pollution is caused by the emission of artificial light.

Impact | The impact of environmental pollution is far-reaching and devastating. Air pollution can lead to respiratory diseases, while water pollution can contaminate drinking water and cause health issues. Land pollution causes reduction in soil fertility and even destruction of natural habitats for animals. In addition, it can lead to the destruction of ecosystems, which in turn leads to a decrease in biodiversity.

Environmental pollution has serious impacts on both humans and the environment. It affects air quality, water quality, soil fertility, and public health. Poor air quality affects the respiratory system, leading to respiratory illnesses like asthma and bronchitis. Water pollution can lead to the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Soil pollution can reduce crop yields, leading to food insecurity.

Types of Environmental Pollution

Air | Air pollution is the introduction of dangerous compounds into the atmosphere, which has a negative influence on the environment and humanity. Air pollution simply makes the air impure or contaminated. It happens when noxious gases, scents, dust, or fumes are discharged into the air in concentrations that endanger human and animal comfort or health or even kill plant life.

Water | The act of contaminating water bodies, such as rivers, oceans, lakes, streams, aquifers, and groundwater, is known as water pollution. It happens when foreign, dangerous substances—such as chemicals, garbage, or polluted materials are released into bodies of water, either directly or indirectly.

Land | When the quality of the earth's land surfaces in terms of use, landscape, and capacity to support life forms is compromised or destroyed, this is referred to as land pollution. It is frequently brought on by human activity and the misuse of land resources, both directly and indirectly.

Soil | Chemical pollutants can pollute soil or cause it to degrade through activities like mining, clearing vegetation, or topsoil erosion. Typically, it occurs when human activities bring harmful chemicals, substances, or items into the soil.

Noise | Noise pollution is an unpleasant sound or a sound that causes excruciating ear pain. Noise pollution is described as unpleasant and unwanted sound levels that cause significant distress to all living beings. It is measured in decibels (dB).

Factors Responsible For Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution has a variety of causes. One of the most prominent is the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas by power plants, factories and automobiles. This produces large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to global climate change. Other sources of environmental pollution include agricultural practices, such as over-fertilization and the use of pesticides, and industrial processes, such as mining, manufacturing and waste disposal.

What Can We Do

To prevent environmental pollution, we must reduce the emissions of various pollutants. We can do this by switching to renewable sources of energy like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. We should reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and use more efficient transportation methods. We should also reduce the emissions of harmful industrial chemicals and practise sustainable agriculture. Additionally, we should increase public awareness of environmental pollution and its impacts, and promote eco-friendly lifestyles.

By understanding the causes and effects of environmental pollution, we can work towards preventing it and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Awarness and knowledge is essential in this regard, as it helps us to become more conscious and informed citizens. It helps us understand the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and make us more responsible citizens.

The world is facing an ever-growing threat from pollution, which if left unchecked will have catastrophic consequences. Education and taking conscious action plan can play a key role in helping to reduce environmental pollution.

Environmental Pollution Essay English for All Students in 1000 Words

Introduction of environmental pollution.

Pollution is the introduction of pollutants into the environment. These harmful pollutants disrupt the balance of nature and trigger negative changes to human things, especially humans. This is among the major challenges that we face in the present. Both countries, developed and developing, are equally affected by this issue. The advanced countries can pay attention to reducing the risk, while the underdeveloped countries completely do not pay attention to it. Due to industrialization that is excessive and the burning of fossil fuels, the amount of pollution is growing rapidly. Pollution could pose a danger to the future of humanity if it is not addressed in the present.

Man has always made use of his inventive genius to force nature to yield its secrets. He has made a spectacular breakthrough in technology, firmly believing that the sort of progress he is making is an unmixed blessing. He has seldom given thought to the fact that the air he breathes, the water he drinks, or the food he eats could be exhausted. And so would be the rich raw materials which he makes the earth yield. He has always assumed the bounties of nature to be inexhaustible. There is a little realization on his part that what he considers progress is seriously disturbing the ecological balance and leading to the breakdown of the life-supporting system on the earth.

Importance of Environment

Earth is the only planet endowed with an environment. The thin cover of air and water that surrounds the earth, known as the biosphere, protects and sustains life. The biosphere is a finely balanced mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, and water vapors. It has been maintained and established by the life cycle of plants, animals, and bacteria. Without the biological processes that have gone on the soil for thousands of years, we could have coal, oil, or food crops.

Nature has been suffering for the past several hundred years but the problem did not assume serious proportion so long as the damage was containable and not beyond self-repair. These limits were exceeded with the spectacular technological breakthrough accomplished in recent years. The highly developed nations which benefited most from these breakthroughs were the first to experience the environmental diseases bred by advanced technology.

Without the photosynthetic activity of green plants, there would be no oxygen to support human or animal life. Similarly, for the supply of pure water, we have to be thankful for the myriads of microorganisms in aquatic systems as also as the action of plants and animals.

Quotations About Environmental Pollution Essay

  • Pollution is the forerunner of perdition – John Trapp
  • Pollution should never be the price of prosperity – Al Gore
  • Pollution- if you don’t kill it, it will kill you – Anonymous
  • The more we pollute the earth the less we deserve to live on earth. – M.M Ilda
  • “Cleanliness is the half of faith.” (حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)

  • There’s so much pollution in the air now that if it weren’t for our lungs there’d be no place to put it all. (Robert Orben)
  • The health effects of air pollution imperil human lives. This fact is well-documented. (Eddie Bernice Johnson)
  • “The most important pathological effects of pollution are extremely delayed and indirect.”(Rene Dubos)
  • “Environmental pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented”

Causes of Environmental Pollution/ Names of Pollutants

In Pakistan, the problem of environmental pollution is related to an increase in industrial activity which has brought along the air, water, and noise pollution. It would be worthwhile to discuss the causes of such pollution and to try and eliminate those which are well within our reach.

  • One of the chief air pollutants is smoke which arises from our factories and is harmful to our lungs. The increase in respiratory diseases may be attributed to rising air pollution.
  • Efforts should be made to confine the factories and chemical laboratories to the outskirts of the cities.
  • The unfortunate incident of gas leakage at Quetta which claimed so many lives and left so many people permanently handicapped was an extreme effect of air pollution.
  • The ever-rising number of heavy vehicles is adding to air pollution by constantly emitting foul smoke.
  • The inexplicably rapid development of technology and massive industrial production. Mills, factories, and foundries release smoke gas and toxic gases. They alter the air quality.
  • The release of gases and toxic smoke is affecting the oceans, lakes, and rivers. The widespread use of pesticides can also harm the environment. In addition, the environment is affected by radiation and waste disposal from nuclear power.
  • The increasing pollution around the globe has contributed to the dirty air.
  • Traffic has increased by a large amount, and vehicles like automobiles, buses, rickshaws, etc. emit smoke in large amounts and pollute the surroundings.
  • Mankind has turned to the practice of destroying trees or plants, as well as natural scenery to satisfy its material requirements.

Environmental Pollution Essay

Types of Environmental Pollution

Environmental scientists classify pollution into three types: air pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, and water pollution.

1- Water Pollution:

Water that we just cannot do without is not free from pollution either. Human waste, animal bathing, industrial waste, etc. make water unfit for drinking. It is not surprising to find diseases like cholera frequently spreading in the form of epidemics. Even major rivers like the Ravi have become extremely polluted, because of which it has become essential to clean its waters at a very great expense.

Major Causes of Water Pollution:

Water pollution is a sad fact of our time. The components that make water dirty are:

  • The sewage from cities is a source of pollution that reaches the bodies of water directly.
  • industrial waste which directly discharges into water bodies.
  • Other chemicals can be found in water bodies as a result of pollution of the soil or the environment.

2- Noise Pollution:

A new kind of pollution that is acquiring serious dimensions is noise pollution. Loud horns from an excessively large number of vehicles on roads, loudspeakers, amplifiers, music systems, etc. disturb the peace of the already, tense modern man. Very loud sounds have impaired hearing in a large number of people and caused nervous problems in several others. It is quite possible to check this pollution by the use of silencers in vehicles, by playing soft music and prohibiting the use of loudspeakers, etc.

3- Air Pollution:

Nuclear tests during recent years have played havoc with our environment. The fallout from these tests has increased the incidence of cancer and congenital diseases. Radiation from nuclear plants is also very dangerous for human health. The recently concluded Gulf War during which several oil wells caught fire and not only emitted dense smoke but also disturbed the temperature pattern of the region has caused great damage to our environment. In recent years, there has been an increasing realization of the gravity of the problem.

The UN itself has been taking steps to focus attention on this hazard. In fact, the degradation of the environment is not merely the question of pollution but embraces the whole concept of the quality of human life. The destruction of forests, the 19 erosion of the soil, the neglect of lands, the loss of wildlife, the accumulation of wastes, and the plight of urban areas are some examples of the degradation of the environment.

Causes of Air Pollution:

  • The utilization of fossil fuels, such as coal, gas, and oil serves a variety of purposes.
  • Smoke is released into the air
  • The cutting down or deforestation of trees
  • Fog, haze, and other hazes are due to various industrial activities of humanity.

4- Soil/Land Pollution:

Pakistan is an agriculture-based nation. Farmers utilized a range of fertilizers, herbicides, and other chemicals to aid in the development of plants. The soil gets polluted and makes it unsuitable for cultivating crops. This is not the only issue. the fact that if government officials aren’t able to remove industrial effluents that remain on the ground and contribute to pollution.

Causes of Land Pollution:

  • The cutting down of trees The salinity, water, and logs.
  • Modern agricultural practices involve the use of pesticides, fertilizers chemicals, excessive irrigation, and more.
  • Excavation, or mining of earth to the limit as well as the usage of hazardous chemicals, elements, etc. for it.
  • Urbanization and industrial activities.
  • Dumping of waste such as plastics, chemicals, and more into the heart of the earth.

Preventions/Solutions About Environmental Pollution Essay

So disease, dirt, hunger, malnutrition, and other companions of poverty. All these grossly affect Nature’s balance which is so vital to healthy human and animal life.

  • To meet the situation in an effective manner, the anti-pollution laws have to be made stringent.
  • Laws have to be passed banning the use of certain types of fuels and inefficient equipment.
  • Enlightened public opinion can play a very useful role.
  • More scientists and technical experts should be employed to keep the atmosphere and water supplies clean and healthy.
  • Organic wastes should be properly treated and processed. Soil nutrients can be produced.
  • Our government must take effective measures for improving the condition of the air.
  • All activities which pollute the atmosphere must be curtailed.
  • Environmental pollution should be the main concern of management to save our ecosystem.
  • We can implement a variety of measures to lessen the environmental impact. One of them is planting trees, using public transportation, and proper disposal of wastes, etc.

How to Check Environmental Pollution?

1.Monitoring and surveillance systems:

Efficient monitoring and surveillance systems play a pivotal role in ensuring environmental pollution control. These systems entail regular data collection on air quality, water quality, soil contamination, and other environmental factors. This collected data aids in identifying pollution sources, assessing pollution levels, and monitoring changes over time. Utilizing advanced technologies like air quality sensors and water quality monitoring stations enables real-time data collection, facilitating swift actions to address pollution hotspots.

2.Environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures :

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) serve as crucial tools to check pollution during the planning and execution of developmental projects. EIAs evaluate the potential environmental impacts of proposed projects and recommend suitable mitigation measures. These assessments take into account factors such as air and water pollution, habitat destruction, and ecological disruption. By integrating pollution control technologies, waste management plans, and biodiversity conservation strategies, the adverse effects of projects on the environment can be minimized.

3.Collaborative efforts among governments, industries, and communities:

Effectively addressing environmental pollution necessitates collaboration among governments, industries, and communities. Governments must formulate and enforce stringent environmental regulations and standards. Establishing regulatory bodies to monitor compliance and imposing penalties for violations are vital steps. Industries have a crucial role to play by adopting sustainable practices, implementing pollution control technologies, and complying with environmental regulations. Community participation is equally important through raising awareness, promoting eco-friendly behaviors, and reporting pollution incidents. Collaborative initiatives like public-private partnerships and community-based monitoring programs enhance the effectiveness of pollution control measures.

“The most important pathological effects of pollution are extremely delayed and indirect.” (Rene Dubos)

We are living in the age of science and technology. Though we have made tremendous progress yet we have to conquer everything, has upset the balance between living things and surroundings. Pollution is like burning mountain that can cause every loss to the living souls on the earth. It is a constant threat to mankind and the entire civilization.

Pollution means “contamination of the purity of things.” It has become a grave problem which is destroying the purity of the air, the seas and the land. The main causes of pollution are continuous industrial development, the excessive use of automobiles and the population explosion. The wastes have been so great an amount that his capability of nature to dispose of wastes has become unable to purify the environment. This problem has assumed alarming proportion. Our rivers, seas, land and air have become polluted.

Atmospheric pollution is the result of emissions of carbon, mono-oxide, sulphur oxides and hydrocarbons. Factories are sending huge quantities of poisonous gases into the atmosphere. Thousands of cars, buses and aeroplanes are pouring deadly poisons into our atmosphere. This severe situation has posed a serious threat to the life of living species. Several people are suffering from various respiratory ailments that could threaten their very lives. Most of the industrial centres in Pakistan e.g. Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala are suffering from pollution one way or the other.

The discharge of the poisonous gases is damaging the Ozone layer which protects us from the harmful rays of the sun. this may result in cancerous diseases and also cause an increase in the atmospheric temperatures.

Human excrements, industrial discharges, nuclear wastes, hospital wastes and agricultural pesticide are the major water pollutants. These poisonous materials are contaminating nearby wells, canals and rivers. The result is that we do not have pure water to drink. This water pollution is killing wildlife and sea life. It is also causing various diseases among human beings. The food crops irrigated with poisonous waters also become poisonous. They also cause various diseases.

Noise pollution is another severe threat to human health. The constant noise of the factories disturbs ou mental peace all the time. The workers are suffering from several psychological diseases because of the noise pollution of machines. The noise of rickshaws and other vehicles shatters our nerves.

Pollution is a fatal threat to the survival of human beings, animals and vegetation. It is causing numerous human health problems such as cancer, weak eyesight, respiratory ailments, headaches, fatigue and digestive disorder. The massive use of pesticide and herbicide is poisoning the ecosystem of the earth. If pollution is not checked, our crops, our fields and our forests will soon disappear. It will cause serious danger to green, marine, animals and human life.

Pollution is an important problem in the modern age. Man must establish and maintain a beneficial relationship with the rest of nature. All activities which pollute the environment must be curtailed. Every person should fulfil his duty by actively taking part in the anti-pollution campaign.

For instance, you might not be able to see the natural gases present in the air, but they are still there. Similarly, the pollutants which are messing up the air and increasing the levels of carbon dioxide is very dangerous for humans. Increased level of carbon dioxide will lead to global warming .

Further, the water is polluted in the name of industrial development, religious practices and more will cause a shortage of drinking water. Without water, human life is not possible. Moreover, the way waste is dumped on the land eventually ends up in the soil and turns toxic. If land pollution keeps on happening at this rate, we won’t have fertile soil to grow our crops on. Introduction

Environmental pollution has remained one of the biggest problems and challenges facing humanity around the globe. Environmental pollution is responsible for major harmful effects on human life, human health, animal survival, and natural ecosystems survival. Over the past few years, many countries have been trying their best to tackle the problem of pollution but these countries are still facing the same environmental problems like air, sound, and water pollution with air pollution as the most dangerous. Environmental pollution is mainly caused by human activities or a total misuse of the earth's resources and in the coming years, the earth will be in a catastrophe if these human activities causing environmental pollution are not stopped. Keeping the environment clean requires a great deal because it provides a better atmosphere for people and the earth's plants and animals. Environmental pollution is a global problem that can be fixed by governments enacting stern laws that persecute individuals found polluting the environment, public awareness on environmental pollution and its effects, and encouraging business owners, company owners, individuals, and societies to use environmentally friendly products.

Causes of Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution is a serious global issue that is caused by a number of factors. First, it is caused by human activities such as individuals burning fossil fuels and other unsustainable forms of energy to get home energy. It is also caused by pollution from the transportation sector. According to Hoang, Chu, and Van Tran "One of the main pollution sources are the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engines, which provide up to 80% of the total consumed energy in the world" (251). Pollution from vehicles, cars, and truck is a major cause of environmental pollution around the world. Cars emit carbon dioxide in the air and since humans are so good at cutting trees, this has exacerbated the problem because there is no natural defense thus the carbon dioxide causes environmental pollution. In addition, environmental pollution is caused by manufacturing industries whereby there is the emission of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere causing environmental pollution. The industries use petroleum and coal as a source of energy in their production thus emitting greenhouse gases, which cause environmental pollution.

Effects of Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution has had numerous negative effects on the environment and the human habitat. Many people tend to ignore the idea that environmental pollution such as water and air pollution can be harmful to the earth, animals, and the people because it makes people and animals sick as well as killing the earth. Air and water pollution not only threatens the life and health of humans and animals but it also causes severe damage to the environment. According to Attademo et al., "Environmental pollution is a global problem with diverse and substantial public health implications" (55). Environmental pollution can lead to serious health problems that can lead to death. Therefore, it is important for individuals and governments to work out on measures and solutions to tackle the problem of environmental pollution.

Environmental Pollution and Climate Change

Environmental pollution is a contributing factor to climate change or rather global warming as it is commonly known. Due to the emission of greenhouse gases, acid rain, and the effects on the ozone layer, which are human activities that cause environmental pollution, the world is facing global warming which is a threat to humanity and the world ecosystem. The greenhouse gases are emitted from burning fossil fuels and other unsustainable forms of energy, which are emitted to the ecosystem and later on hurt the earth and its resources (Hanjin et al. 7). The environmental impacts of environmental pollution from greenhouse gas emissions have proved calamitous to many developing and developed countries because this kind of pollution not only hurts the environment but also the human health and the other habitats on earth.

Solutions to Environmental Pollution

Managing environmental pollution is important because it will help keep the environment clean and the earth a safe place for all living things and biotic life. Landrigan, Fuller, and Horton note that "Environmental pollution is a large, costly, inequitably distributed, and preventable cause of disease and death in countries around the world" (1429). One of the solutions to environmental pollution is for the government to past stringent laws that persecute persons found polluting the environment. If all states enact laws against environmental pollution and increase penalties for those found polluting the environment, then the corporations that pollute the environment will shun from emitting dirt to the environment. Today, many irresponsible individuals and companies are generating large profits from activities that harm the environment and because of lenient laws, they cover for the fines with their large profits and others avoid paying penalties. However, with stricter and harsh laws, such individuals will cease destroying our ecosystem with their activities thus preventing environmental pollution.

Secondly, to solve the environmental pollution problem, governments should encourage individuals, business owners, company owners, and societies to use environmentally friendly products. With the use of eco-friendly products, our environment will be safe from pollution. Environmentally friendly products do not cause any harm to our ecosystem (Hoang, Chu, and Van Tran 250). However, it is sad that despite this information being in the public domain, many people still use harmful chemicals and other products that are not eco-friendly thus causing fatal pollution such as water and air pollution. A good example is farmers still using chemical fertilizers when they can make and use natural fertilizer that is eco-friendly. Therefore, is governments can focus on educating people on eco-friendly products and encouraging them to use products that do not harm the environment, then the problem of environmental pollution can be successfully prevented and solved.

In addition, the local and state governments should warn individuals from indulging in human activities that cause environmental pollution. Public awareness of environmental pollution and its effects is vital because it will help solve the problem of pollution. People should be encouraged to use sustainable energy, drive less and walk more, and companies encouraged to find eco-friendly means to dispose of their waste (Jamil et al. 484). In addition, they should also be encouraged to plant more trees as it promotes a clean and safe environment for all. The problem of environmental pollution can also be tackled by educating citizens on the hazards of littering the environment and the importance of keeping the environment clean.

In conclusion, environmental pollution has become a global issue that is threatening to endanger all life on the planet earth including animals, plans and even the non-living like the biotic life. It has grown in magnitude and it is time for governments to realize the problem is serious and needs to be addressed with the urgency it deserves. It is hoped that with the government encouraging people to utilize eco-friendly products and avoid human activities causing environmental pollution in addition to imposing stricter laws and regulations on environmental degradation activities, the problem of environmental pollution can be solved. In essence, environmental pollution problem encompasses both the human population's well-being as well as the ecosystem. Therefore, a collective approach to solving this menace is obligatory and imperative.

1) Water management - Fresh water is defined by UNESCO as water that can be used for drinking by human beings and that can be used by animals and crops. Human being gets their fresh water from ground water and surface runoff. Surface water is rainwater that has not yet infiltrated into the ground while ground water refers to the water stored in spaces found in-between rocks in the earth’s crust. However, fresh water is not necessarily safe for drinking as it might have some impurities and pollutants in it as it made its way into the streams, springs, rivers or even as it infiltrates into the ground. - Although 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, only finite sources of fresh water are found, and that small percentage is what human beings rely on for their survival. This creates pressure on water as a resource to cater for the expanding world population with the situation worsening in poor countries where people lack clean water for drinking with outbreaks of water related diseases due to poor sanitation. According to the World Bank, about a billion people globally lack access to clean and safe water for drinking. - Water conservation is a holistic term that entails strategies, causes of actions and activities geared to managing freshwater resources while at the same time protecting the environment. The purpose of conservation is to meet the demands of the current generation while ensuring that the needs of future generations are also met. - Water use refers to the utilization of water for a specific purpose or task by an individual, community or country. Global water use has increased sharply over the recent past as the demand for the same increasing with the growing population. 2) Effects of water use on the environment - Short term effects of water use on the environment include emptying water bodies such as rivers and lakes while long term effects include denting the natural water cycle thus destabilizing the equilibrium of living organisms that depend on water for survival. - Types of environmental pollution - Air pollution - Air pollution is the introduction of particles and chemicals into the atmosphere. This subsequently causes diseases, discomfort and destruction to human beings, living organisms and physical structures such as the built environment. Air pollution is caused by various factors that include; - Natural occurrences such as forest fires, volcanoes, erosion by wind, evaporation of organic materials, and natural radioactivity. - Industrial emissions and burning of fossil fuels from transportation vessels.

- Use of green energy to minimize burning of fossil fuels, which releases harmful pollutants to the atmosphere. Investing in the wind and solar energy can go a long way in mitigating causes of air pollution. (Shah, 2013)

Car manufacturers can produce more energy efficient cars that minimally pollute the environment.

Government intervention on industries that cause air pollution through imposed levies and taxes. - Effect on ecosystem health Acidification of rain water formed from the pollutants found in the atmosphere harm vegetation and even buildings. The effects of acid rain cut across ecosystems and destabilize them. When acid rain occurs, it affects trees, harm aquatic animals, and wildlife hence affecting negatively on the health of ecosystems. - Effects on human health Short term effects include eyes, nose and throat irritation, allergies, respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Long term effects are lung cancer, heart diseases, and kidney damages. - Water pollution - Causes - Industrial waste e.g. sculpture, mercury, asbestos, oils, nitrates and phosphates - Lack of proper treatment of sewage and waste water leading to spread of water borne diseases. - Through septic tanks when the liquid part is released into land drains and infiltrate into the ground. - Ocean and seas dumping where trash and wastes are directly or indirectly dumped into these water bodies and take a long time to decompose. - Oil spillage is a major cause that brings about the detrimental effects to marine life. - Treatment

Stringent laws on effluent treatment by industries, hospitals before release into the environment.

Proper waste disposal which is a source-prevention measure whereby rubbish are kept in a bin and not left exposed to surface runoff and end up in water bodies. Proper handling of chemicals, oils and medicals waste that are hazardous to the human health through the development of chemical disposal plans by the local authorities can go a long way in curbing water pollution. - Effects on ecosystem health Water pollution can destabilize an ecosystem through the death of aquatic life which could be part of a delicate ecosystem. Their living environment is destroyed by these pollutants and hence creates a void in the entire relationship chain (ecosystem) - Effects on human health

Water pollution brings with it water borne diseases that affect humans mainly through drinking of contaminated or polluted water.

3. Land pollution a) Causes - Chemical leftovers from pesticides and fertilizers are major sources of land pollution. - Mining activities that often leave the ground in the open after clear cut activities have taken place exposing the soil to erosion which then destroys the quality of land. Chemicals left from mines leach overtime into the soil, causing pollution. - Deforestation leaves the land exposed and to soil erosion and direct sunlight. - Treatment

People to embrace reduce - reuse- recycles principle, which will help in waste management.

Avoid the use of pesticides if possible and buying of biodegradable products from the market. - Effects on ecosystem Land pollution may harm an ecosystem through destruction of habitat, chemical leftovers from mine stations that affect soils and are washed to water bodies leading to further downstream pollution. - Effect on human health

Polluted land surfaces might cause skin cancer and respiratory diseases.

Foul smell causing discomfort among human beings. - Global warming - Background - The atmosphere of the earth refers to the layer of gases that are held together by the earth’s gravity. It contributes to life support on earth by absorbing ultraviolet rays, retaining earth heat and regulating temperature extremes during the day and night. - Earth’s energy budget refers to the amount of energy produced by the sun and the amount of that energy received by the earth. - Green house gases are the cause of global warming as they retain heat reflected from the earth’s surface causing increased temperatures. - Green house effect refers to a situation where short wavelength light that are visible are transferred over a transparent medium and absorbed while the longer wavelengthsof infrared re radiation are unable to transfer through the same medium leading to retention of heat. - Carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide are primary gases involved in global warming. - Methane gas is one of the anthropogenic gases that contribute to global warming. - Future - Oceans are vulnerable to the adverse effects of global warming as they are major heat and carbon sinks. Increased acidification, rise of sea levels due to ices melting and fluctuations in water temperature and waves all impact negatively on the aquatic life of the oceans. This also leads to changes in weather patterns leading to extremes such as floods, droughts and storm surge - Increased global warming has the potential to affect the environment through many ways including extreme weather conditions that will lead to storms and heat waves. All these extreme weather conditions affect human beings directly causing poverty and natural disasters. - Evidence of increased global warming is seen in the melting of ice in the arctic region and the subsequent rise of sea levels. Extreme weather conditions are also evident through the rise of global temperatures in some regions with droughts and floods characterizing affected areas. - Prevention - Global warming can be mitigated through five major ways which include - Investing in green energy toreduce harmful emissions. - Driving energy efficient cars with reduced emissions, embracing green construction and green homes. - Setting limits on industrial emissions and imposing taxes on defaulters. - Having better transportation networks and better communities (Natural resources defense council). - Individual efforts to mitigate global warming would be driving more energy efficient cars and embracing green products and services that do not contribute to increased global warming. - Lack of political will on issues pertaining to the environment can be a major setback in the development of policies on global warming. This might be through impunity where industries that pollute the environment get away with the crime hence constraining efforts of mitigating global warming. - Mitigation of global warming is the responsibility of governments and individuals in general. Through political will and environmental stewardship from the society, global warming can be greatly reduced and effects mitigated.

Carroll, C. (n.d.). Dear EarthTalk. How could there ever be a “water scarcity?” Isn’t water the most plentiful thing on Earth? Natural resources defense council. (n.d.). The earth's best defence. Essay – 2 (100 – 1000 words)

What is environmental pollution.

The net totality of all the damage caused on the environment due to a host of factors such as air pollution , water pollution , soil pollution etc. leave a combined and disastrous effect on the environment we live and in short, it can be termed as environmental pollution.

We are aware of the different kinds of pollution that exist in our nature- air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, land pollution and many more.

In reality these different types of pollutants from various polluting agents work in combination to create a deadly effect on the environment.

Most of the times, this effect is irreversible and measures that we take to rectify individual pollution effects can subside contamination to a certain amount, but cannot avoid it totally.

Environmental pollution is the greatest threat to this ultra modern century. Environmental pollution has shot up at an alarming zenith that today it has become one of the greatest concerns of the developed and developing countries.

Let us explore how and from where the coinage of the term ‘environmental pollution’ came up from.

When the Industrial Revolution hit Europe in the nineteenth century, the whole world hailed the advent of a glorious, advanced and prosperous new era.

It was a significant brave new world—a world of steam engines and motor cars.

Then followed the aeroplane, the spacecraft and finally the computers performing wonders for man like the earth echoed with the invigorating sound of factory siren and the roar of sophisticated machinery, knowing little about the havoc it could play due to this attack on nature. Large industrial units flourished in places of sylvan retreats.

Causes of environmental pollution

Environmental pollution is caused by not just one, but there are a whole lot of contributing factors that have been adding in numbers day by day, minute by minute.

The poisonous smoke from factories and industries take away the natural and fresh air present in the atmosphere and replace it with toxic gases.

These toxic gases create smog and a thick blanket of contaminated gases envelope the atmosphere.

If we were to talk about chemical effluents from industries, we know that the thought of a chemical in our kitchen sink can ring an alarm bell in our mind.

The easy discharge of sewage plus contaminants into river waters has brought down of quality of water by a great level and caused disastrous effects on the rivers and aquatic life of our planet.

A great imbalance between land, atmosphere and water is created on account of this.

Soil is enriched with fertilizers and pesticides, in an aim to get good profits from agricultural produce. The natural qualities of the soil are long forgotten due to this.

Soil has been eroded from the top surfaces of forests. Man started to exploit forests for his selfish needs. So, he started cutting down trees and used the timber to manufacture a whole lot of wooden products.

He prepared furniture, artifacts, extracted rubber etc. This happened on a small scale at the beginning of industrialization.

When it hit its peak, man started cutting down trees unreasonably and cited industrialization and prosperity as the good reasons.

When large numbers of forests were cut down in this manner, they gave way to barren lands. Such lands were not even suitable for cultivation of crops.

The soil was so loose in deforested regions that they could be easily washed away by rain water. None of the nutrients could be provided or the soil could not be held tight by its constituent elements.

So, the only option was to invade them further and convert these forest lands into urban sites. Sites gave way to skyscrapers and in short, built concrete jungles.

The demands of drinking water for these tall skyscraper dwellers are so huge that most of the taps run dry and empty during summer seasons in big cities. The day is not far off when we would be paying the price of gold for the price of water.

In short, rapid urbanization, commercialization, together with unchecked industrialization and rampant deforestation has had detrimental effects on the environment.

There is no one cause that can be cited for causing environmental pollution. Things happen in a cycle. It’s a combined effect.

Land pollution and soil pollution are interlinked. Air pollution and water pollution are also interlined in many ways. So, a combined effect renders a disastrous call on the environment.

Effects of environmental pollution

It was left to a few lost souls in the wilderness who spoke to us as prophets of doom, but their cries were submerged in the thick black smoke emerged from the dark tall chimneys of a million industrial units and drowned by the din of metallic monsters.

Today the industrialization has reached a sky-rocketing sight and we do not know how to halt or find out an alternative measure to adopt successfully in our greedy march towards capitalistic attitude.

Today, our planet has reached a stage, where environmental pollution is threatening to annihilate it. We cannot imagine a future life when there will be no butterflies, no birds, no fish and the rain water will be black in color.

The effects of environmental pollution are many. We can see smog early in the morning at many parts of the cold country regions.

Smog is nothing but fog combined with smoke. Due to the presence of smog early in the morning, the visibility of the whole area diminishes to a great extent and we can see accidents occurring due to this.

Water shortage and water crisis are like every day events and part and parcel of life at many high rise buildings in the metropolitan cities.

Regular shortage of water supplies is just a normal thing in big towns. When people finally get access to water, they realize they have been gifted with contaminated water, full of impurities that may lead them to many water borne diseases.

Many young children have become victims of asthma and respiratory disorders at very young ages today. The result of this is on account of air pollution.

Fresh and clean air is nowhere to breathe. Big cities are made up of polluted and contaminated air, they are filled up with toxins that run through our bronchiole and create a world full of disorders.

Greenhouse gases are fast heating up in the atmosphere and causing global warming. We can sight unseasonal and acid rains at many parts of the world.

The ozone layer is fast depleting and we can see visible holes in the protective layer of the atmosphere. This may cause and lead to many complications from UV rays, including skin cancer, etc.

Solutions for environmental pollution

We cannot imagine a time when the rivers will get dried up and the land will become barren and instead of forests we will have concrete jungles.

This will soon become a reality if we do not adopt immediate concrete steps to prevent pollution.

As a preventive measure, we must grow more trees, stop killing of wild animals, avoid using plastic bags, stop littering, use less petroleum products, and use more environment – friendly products and so on.

If we do not consider this as a matter of supreme importance to achieve a pollution free environment – we will be totally annihilated by a monster of our own creation.

  • Use of plastics should be banned and paper and jute bags should be used instead. Even if plastic is being used, the usage should be based on necessity and proper disposal methods should be administered.
  • Garbage disposal should be done properly. Waste management should be important criteria for civic authorities and they should look into scientific ways of treating waste. Proper segregation at collection units should be followed.
  • More trees should be planted. The more the trees, the greener our future, the clearer the air and better the environment.
  • More forests should be developed by increasing the green cover around the planet and thus we can hope for more rains and good production of crops as well.
  • Anything that damages the environment, like excessive burning of fossil fuels, combustion of carbon elements, increase of chloro flouro carbons, etc should be avoided.

There are many more measures that we can take up as part of our everyday lives.

Not just in words, but simple actions may lead to major changes in our environment. Reduce, Recycle and Re-use should be our motto as far as possible.

Our environment is set up in such a way that everything inside is interlinked and interconnected. Any change happening at any point in the link affects the others and on the whole upsets the global ecosystem.

There is a point of sustenance that any living ecosystem can thrive on. Beyond this point, we can only see things falling apart.

The delicate balance in the ecosystem that was maintained in the planet has been destroyed beyond repair.

Even if we take suitable measures to replace the lost greenery and bring back the lost life to our environment, it would be a contribution only in a small or negligible percentage.

The damages caused are far beyond what we ought to restore and bring back. It would take millions of years to give back the lost glory and sheen to our environment.

Reasons for Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution is a significant problem in the world today. Some industries release chemicals into the air, which cause harm to the ozone layer that shields us from UV radiation. Some industries release harmful chemicals into water resources. These emissions will be carried by wind and rain and deposited on land or ocean surfaces.

Overpopulation is one of the primary reasons for massive environmental pollution. Besides, it has resulted due to improper waste disposal, hazardous chemical emissions, an increase in the number of factories, and overuse of natural resources.

Measures to Avoid Environmental Pollution

With the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, it is possible to limit global warming and reduce pollution at the same time. One of the leading causes of environmental pollution is the production, transportation and disposal of electronic waste. Companies should install recycling systems for computers and cell phones to reduce their need for landfills.

One of the measures to avoid pollution is to reduce the use of plastics. This includes using fewer disposable containers, choosing reusable bags, and reducing the use of plastics. Another way to avoid pollution is by recycling and disposing of waste responsibly.

"The most important pathological effects of pollution are extremely delayed and indirect". (Rone Dubos)

In recent years, the problem of environmental pollution has become very acute. In Pakistan, sufficient attention has not been paid to it so far. If we do not tackle this problem now, future generation will suffer from harmful effects of pollution.

Pollution can be of different types, such as, air pollution, water pollution, food pollution, noise pollution and land pollution. Pollution results from the greed of man for getting more and more money. Trees are cutting down on large scales to increase production of the industry.

"Water and air, the two essential elements on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans". (Anonymous)

The main cause of air and water pollution is unbalanced industrial growth, urbanization and deforestation. The owners of industries dump waste material on the surface of the earth or in rivers. As a result, water is polluted and the waste on the earth produces different poisonous gases, which pollute the air. On the other hand, forests which purify air have been cut down and new cities and industries have been established in their places.

Trees and plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen but when trees are cut down, the air is not purified. Deforestation also causes soil erosion. The rich soil is either washed away by water or blown away by the wind. As a result, chemical fertilizers are used to maintain its productivity. Polluted water is used for watering plants and vegetables. In this way, vegetables and crops are polluted. Pesticides are also a cause of pollution to our crops, vegetables and fruits.

Besides these problems, there is the problem of noise pollution. The roaring noise of vehicles, particularly in large cities, is deafening. It causes neurosis and other disorders. The problem of noise pollution must also be tackled on a war footing. The use of mufflers mechanical contrivances which prevent sound from coming out of a machine helps reduce noise pollution. Such modern devices should be produced in our country and their use should be promoted.

Water pollution has time and again caused outbreaks of cholera and gastroenteritis in many districts and is the major cause of large scale deaths. Water pollution has caused alarmingly high risks to human health in many parts of our country and urgent measures are needed to control it.

"Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be dispersed because we've been ignorant of their alue" . (R.B.Fuller)

In order to control pollution, we need to plan the process of industrialization in such a way as checks the spread of pollution. Similarly, the phenomenon of urbanization should be well-planned and diversified. There should be a mechanism of waste management. Solid industrial and non-industrial waste should be buried in the earth or dumped onto the barren parts of lowlands. It should be destroyed by chemicals that remove their harmful effects and sterile them. A comprehensive programme of tree plantation should be taken in hand. Deforestation should be prohibited. Polluted water should not be used for irrigation. People should not dump domestic wastes on the streets. There should be some scientific way for its disposal.

If the air and water are polluted in this way, man will face greater health hazards in near future. Air will not remain breathable and human beings will suffer. Various diseases will break out and become rampant. When water is polluted, food will also be polluted. Therefore, widespread and increasing pollution must be checked. If it is not checked, man will not be able to maintain his good health. The very existence of life on earth will be endangered.

"The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth". (Cheif Seattle)
