While with biofuels, the initial costs may be higher due to an unequal distribution of energy. Overtime the more people that decide to buy and or switch to bioenergy powered products, the more refined and efficient it will be causing both production and product value costs to recede (Introduction to Biofuels: At Issue). The same way that as more automobiles gained popularity, the less the product cost to produce.

Now that the information is public, how can it be used in day to day society? The most common of the two alternative energy sources is solar power (Hamer). 1. What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy, often referred to as clean energy, comes from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished. For example, sunlight or wind keep shining and blowing, even if their availability depends on time and weather. While renewable energy is often thought of as a new technology, harnessing nature’s power has long been used for heating, transportation, lighting, and more. 1

Non-renewable, or “dirty,” energy includes fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. Non-renewable sources of energy are only available in limited amounts and take a long time to replenish. When we pump gas at the station, we’re using a finite resource refined from crude oil that’s been around since prehistoric times. Non-renewable energy sources are also typically found in specific parts of the world, making them more plentiful in some nations than others. By contrast, every country has access to sunshine and wind. Prioritizing non-renewable energy can also improve national security by reducing a country’s reliance on exports from fossil fuel–rich nations. 1

2. How many different types of renewable energy are there?

The two main sources of renewable energy – or the ones you’ve most likely heard of before – are solar and wind power.

We use solar energy every day, from growing crops on farms to staying warm. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are made of solar cells. A cell is a small disk of a semiconductor like silicon. They are attached by wire to a circuit. As light strikes the semiconductor, light is converted into electricity that flows through the circuit. As soon as the light is removed, the solar cell stops producing power 2 .

We can also produce electricity through wind power. A wind turbine turns energy in the wind into electricity using the aerodynamic force created by the rotor blades, which work similarly to an airplane wing or helicopter rotor blade. When the wind flows across the blade, the air pressure on one side of the blade decreases. The difference in air pressure across the two sides of the blade creates both lift and drag. The force of the lift is stronger than the drag and this causes the rotor to spin. The rotor is connected to the generator, either directly (if it’s a direct drive turbine) or through a shaft and a series of gears (a gearbox) that speed up the rotation and allow for a physically smaller generator. This translation of aerodynamic force to rotation of a generator creates electricity. 3

Hydropower, Biomass, Geothermal, and Tidal Energy

Other less ‘mainstream’ sources of renewable energy are hydroelectric power, biomass energy, geothermal energy, and tidal energy.

Like other forms of electricity generation, hydropower uses a turbine to help generate electricity; using the energy of falling or flowing water to turn the blades. The rotating blades spin a generator that converts the mechanical energy of the spinning turbine into electrical energy. 4

Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Biomass is organic material that comes from plants and animals. When biomass is burned, the chemical energy in biomass is released as heat. It can be burned directly or converted to liquid biofuels or biogas. 5

According to the Geothermal Research Council, geothermal Energy is heat (thermal) derived from the earth (geo). It is the thermal energy contained in the rock and fluid that fills the fractures and pores within the rock of the earth’s crust. Deep wells are drilled into underground reservoirs to tap steam and very hot water. The steam and hot water are then brought to the surface for use in a variety of applications, including electricity generation, direct use, and heating and cooling. 6

Tidal energy is produced by the surge of ocean waters during the rise and fall of tides. For most tidal energy generators, turbines are placed in tidal streams. A tidal stream is a fast-flowing body of water created by tides. A turbine is a machine that takes energy from a flow of fluid. That fluid can be air (wind) or liquid (water). Because water is much more dense than air, tidal energy is more powerful than wind energy. Unlike wind, tides are predictable and stable. Where tidal generators are used, they produce a steady, reliable stream of electricity. 7

3. Which renewable energy source is the best?

Although all of the different forms of renewable energy can be used, the most efficient forms of renewable energy are geothermal, solar, wind, hydroelectricity, and biomass. In the US in 2015, renewable energy accounted for a tenth of the total US energy consumption. Half of this was in the form of electricity. Biomass had the biggest contribution with 50%, followed by hydroelectricity at 26% and wind power at 18%. 8 However, these statistics may show the most efficient forms as such because of the availability and popularity of certain types of renewable energy. The more mainstream renewable energy becomes, and the more it is utilized globally, these statistics will change.

Michael Klare, PhD, Professor of Peace and World Security Studies at Hampshire College, stated the following in his Apr. 22, 2015 article titled “The Age of Wind and Solar Is Closer Than You Think” available at the Scientific American website:

“That day will come: the life-changing moment when renewable energy—wind, solar, geothermal and others still in development—replace fossil fuels as the principal source of world energy…

The transition to renewables will be hastened by dramatic improvements in the pricing and performance of such systems. Due to steady increases in the efficiency of wind and solar systems, coupled with the savings achieved through large-scale manufacture, the price of renewables is falling globally…

The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy will not occur overnight, and it will not escape recurring setbacks. Nevertheless, renewables are likely to replace fossil fuels as the dominant source of electrical power well before mid-century as well as make giant strides in other areas such as transportation.” 13

The short answer is: yes. Renewable energy can and will replace fossil fuels in the future, but it will take time for the world to adjust to reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.

5. How can renewable energy benefit the environment?

This is a fairly straight-forward answer. Unlike fossil fuels such as oil and diesel, renewable energy sources produce no greenhouse gases and do not produce any toxic substances or pollutants that could harm us or the environment. In addition, renewable energy sources are – as the name states – renewable. For example, wind power or solar power cannot be depleted. We can’t run out of wind or sunshine. The same goes for hydropower.

However, there are some disadvantages to certain sources of renewable energy. Wind and solar power require large masses of land to erect wind turbines or solar panels. There are some ways to combat this issue, such as using farmland. Researchers from Oregon State University estimate that installing photovoltaic panels on just one percent of croplands worldwide would be enough to meet allof humanity’s global electricity needs 9 .

6. How does renewable energy save money?

There are a number of ways that renewable energy will save you money. For one, your electricity bill could be lower. Businesses that install solar panels, wind turbines and other forms of renewable energy on their properties and use them to power their operations can meet a significant portion or all of their energy needs. They would also be protected from fluctuations in electricity prices, and could potentially sell their energy back to the grid. When a power outage happens on the main grid, homes and businesses that have renewable energy will not be affected. Renewable energy is also becoming less expensive upfront to buy and install. In the long term, utilizing renewable energy sources either in your home or as a business will save money and reduce the risk of outages. 10

7. Will renewable energy create jobs?

In 2016, the renewable energy sector employed about 9.8 million people, which is a 1.1% increase compared to 2015. Moreover, the solar power industry alone generated twice more workplaces than the coal or oil industry combined. Most of the fossil fuel jobs in extraction or other supportive activities have been declining since 2012 when gas and oil industry reached their peak. Therefore, people are looking for new opportunities and along comes renewable energy registering a 12% faster growth than the US economy.

Today, jobs in clean energy become more available and well-paid because, according to European Defence Fund (EDF), solar energy supply companies are able to offer more jobs per dollar invested. It develops 12 times faster than the whole US economy. The main reason for such growth is the economic indicators. Businesses have realised that sustainable development is key to success, long-term performance, and investment. Besides that, the prices on solar and wind products have dropped—making it more affordable. The Great Powers such as US, China, and Germany are pushing for renewables, which made them launch a plan to reduce the global gas emissions by 40%. It will include building factories generating clean energy that would require creating 430,000 additional jobs.

The increasing investments in the renewable energy sector has the potential to provide more jobs than any other fossil fuel industry. Local businesses and renewable industries will benefit from this change as their income will increase significantly. The benefits of shifting to renewable energy are clear-cut and for this reason the governments should react positively towards the transition to clean energy. 14

8. Will renewable energy sources stop global warming?

Many people disagree over whether or not global warming is real. We are not here to debate that fact; however, we are here to discuss the significant impacts that fossil fuel use has on the environment, and how renewable energy will reduce those harmful effects. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions act like a blanket, trapping heat, which results in frequent storms, drought, sea level rise, and even extinction of animal species. In the US, 29% of emissions come from the electricity sector. Replacing these fossil fuels with renewable energy sources will reduce the amount of harmful emissions in the atmosphere, and will reduce the risks associated with global warming. Renewable energy sources produce little to no emissions during the manufacturing, installation, operation, and decommission. For example, burning natural gas for electricity releases between 0.6 and 2 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour; coal emits between 1.4 and 3.5 pounds of CO2E/kWh. On the other hand, wind produces only 0.02 to 0.04 pounds of CO2E/kWh during a life cycle, and solar produces 0.07 to 0.2; geothermal 0.1 to 0.2; and hydroelectric between 0.1 and 0.5. 11

9. What happens if the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing?

The answer to this question is: batteries. When the sun IS shining and the wind IS blowing, solar panels and wind turbines (as well as other renewable sources such as hydropower) produce electricity, and this electricity is stored in large batteries. When solar panels or wind turbines produce more power than we are demanding, the energy gets stored in batteries for later use.

According to GE 12 , a battery energy storage solution offers new application flexibility and unlocks new business value across the energy value chain, from conventional power generation, transmission & distribution, and renewable power, to industrial and commercial sectors. Energy storage supports diverse applications including firming renewable production, stabilizing the electrical grid, controlling energy flow, optimizing asset operation and creating new revenue. Energy storage can help you increase the dispatchability and predictability of renewables, helping to meet strict code and connection permits. 12  

10. How can I use renewable energy?

The following are some top green alternative energy tips that will help you get an idea of how you as an individual can incorporate more renewable energy into your life: 15

  • Switch to green power . An increasing number of electricity providers offer renewable alternatives, such as wind and solar power.
  • Use solar power. Active solar power is captured through solar cells and can be stored for later or used immediately to provide heat or electricity. You could also use solar power to heat the water for your showers, dishwasher, and laundry by installing a solar hot water system.
  • Use geothermal energy. Ground source heat pumps are a way to reduce electricity use for heating and cooling, so its easier to go 100% renewable.
  • Replace fossil fuels with biomass/biofuels. You can heat your home using biofuels. You can also use a woodstove or pellet stove.
  • Use wind power. It is more expensive up front, but a wind turbine is a 20-year investment that will save you money in the long run.
  • Use small-scale hydropower. Micro hydropower can be used, like pumping water to power a generator.
  • Start smart. When buying a home, make sure it is well insulated and energy-efficient so you use less electricity.

Energy is a primary input for almost all activities and is, therefore, vital for improvement in quality of life. Its use in sector such as industry, com­merce, transport, telecommunications, wide range of agriculture and house­hold services has compelled us to focus our attention to ensure its continuous supply to meet our ever increasing demands.

Energy related problems are not new. The energy related problems are as old as 2500 years ago. The early Romans and Greeks faced fuel shortage as wood was their primary source of energy. They had to import wood from very faraway places. Fossil fuel is still the main source of energy. Today we are facing the peak of oil and gas utilization. Fossil fuel resources took millions of years to form and are infinite.

These resources may be exhausted in a few hundred years. Historical evidence shows that world energy demand has increased at almost the same rate as gross world product (GWP). People living in industrialized or developed countries are a relatively small percentage of the world’s total popu­lation, but they consume a huge share of the total energy produced in the world.

The main issues regarding the energy problem in urban areas are:

(a) How to utilize the energy from non-renewable sources at their maximum efficiency.

(b) How to make use of renewable sources of energy or the alternative energy sources?

Energy policy today has two choices (paths). One path leads to the fossil fuels (hard path), which means continuing as we have been for a number of years i.e., emphasising energy quantity by finding more amount of fossil fuels and build­ing much larger power plants.

The second path is the soft path which leads to the energy alternatives that emphasize energy quality and are also renewable, flexible and more environmental friendly. The soft path relies mainly on renew­able energy i.e. sunlight, wind biomass, tidal energy etc.

There is a need to resort to energy management. This concept recognizes that no single energy source can possibly provide all the energy required by the source nation. Thus, the basic objective of the integrated energy management is to obtain sustainable energy and which should be realized at the local level. In addition, measures to conserve energy need to be followed.

Energy conservation is considered as a quick and economical way to solve the problem of power shortage as also a means of conserving the country’s finite sources of energy. Energy conservation measures are cost effective, require rela­tively small investments and have short gestation as well as pay back periods. The studies conducted by Energy Management Centre, New Delhi have indi­cated that there is about 25% potential of energy conservation in the industrial sector.

Utah Makes High Stakes Gamble in Supreme Court Federal Land Case

Utah’s move to legally take over a South Carolina-sized region of mountains, canyons, oil and gas leases, and wildlife habitat from the federal government could upend federal land ownership across the West.

The state’s gambit to declare 18.5 million acres of federal land unconstitutional is unlikely to succeed, but if the US Supreme Court takes the case filed Tuesday and the state wins, it stands to set off an epic battle over a possible mass transfer or sale of federal land and minerals that could spread across 14 states and beyond.

The state is effectively asking the justices to declare unconstitutional the 1976 Federal Land Policy and Management Act, in which Congress declared that it intends for federal lands to remain in federal hands, said Andrew Mergen, an environmental law professor at Harvard Law School.

The act governs the 245 million acres of federal land overseen by the Bureau of Land Management that is spread across the 11 Western states, Alaska, the Dakotas, and a few Eastern states.

“If the court were to unwind FLPMA, it would truly be extraordinary,” Mergen said in an email, adding that all the BLM land nationwide would be tied up in litigation “for ages” as federal and local governments fight over who should own the BLM’s land and minerals.

“I think the Court will deny cert here because it will see through Utah’s cynical attempt at seeking a judicial override of an act of Congress,” he said.

Utah officials don’t believe it was ever Congress’ intent under Utah’s statehood act or FLPMA for the federal government to maintain control of nearly 70% of the state’s land area—land that would be better cared for under state control, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) told Bloomberg Law in an interview.

“The federal government has been terrible—they’re underfunded in the management of their land, always behind,” Cox said. Ranchers grazing on public lands are “now being choked out by over-burdensome regulations and an extreme environmental movement that is trying to literally destroy their way of life.”

Bypassing Lower Courts

But Utah is taking a “very extraordinary” procedural step to bypass lower courts by filing the suit in the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, which rarely succeeds, said John Leshy, a professor of real property law at University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, and former Interior solicitor during the Clinton administration.

The state is taking advantage of a court that is seen as hostile to environmental regulation, but it faces long odds after the justices in January declined to hear Alaska’s original jurisdiction complaint against the Environmental Protection Agency’s veto of a proposed copper mine there.

“It scares me because while I think the suit has very little merit, the US Supreme Court last term concluded that a gun that can fire 700 rounds a minute is not machine gun, so anything can happen,” said John Ruple, the law and policy program director at the Wallace Stegner Center at the University of Utah. “What I think should be a clean simple legal question, if it gets to the Supreme Court, I’m not sure how they will approach it.”

The BLM’s new Public Lands Rule , which was finalized this year and declares that conservation can be a “use” of federal land, was the main impetus for the timing of the lawsuit, Cox said, even though the litigation had been in the works for a long time. Utah officials say on a website about the lawsuit that the new rule restricts public access to the land and hurts local economies.

The rule, in addition to the Biden administration’s restrictive management of national monuments and some road closures, were among the reasons Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes (R) decided to go directly to the Supreme Court to claim at least 18.5 million acres of “unappropriated” BLM land for the state.

The state is asking the Supreme Court to declare that the Constitution limits the federal government from holding land beyond the District of Columbia and other federal “enclaves” purchased with state approval, and prohibits the government from indefinitely retaining public lands that haven’t been appropriated in some way by Congress.

The federal government’s constitutional power to hold land for one of its enumerated functions doesn’t include keeping 18.5 million acres of land in Utah under federal ownership “for no designated federal purpose” and over Utah’s objections, the state’s lawsuit says. The Constitution didn’t grant Congress the power to claim that land for the federal government as it did in the FLPMA, the state claims.

Uphill Battle

That’s going to be a tough argument to make before the justices in part because it would set aside more than a century of precedent.

“There is zero evidence the nation’s founders wanted to prohibit the nation from owning and managing land to serve the national interest—all the evidence is to the contrary,” Leshy said, calling Utah’s legal theory “bogus.”

Utahns disclaimed all right and title to unappropriated federal lands under Utah’s statehood act , and Congress exercised its “ultimate power” over public lands when declaring in FLPMA that they remain in federal hands, said Randi Spivak, the public lands policy director for the Center for Biological Diversity.

Those lands are “no longer unappropriated” because Congress gave them purpose in FLPMA, she said.

The fundamental legal questions about US authority to retain federal lands seem to have been resolved in a series of Supreme Court cases more than a century ago upholding the federal government’s right to establish forest reserves and upholding federal grazing permitting authority, said Murray Feldman, partner at Holland & Hart LLP in Boise, Idaho.

“Perhaps the litigants are signaling that they think the current Supreme Court may be willing to revisit the precedent in this area and depart from it, as the court recently shown a willingness to do in other cases,” including dispatching Chevron deference in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo , and other cases, Feldman said.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Uranium mining in the U.S. is picking up after the nuclear fuel’s price hit a 16-year high earlier this year. But now that a mine near the Grand Canyon is producing ore, Native American tribes, local officials and Arizona’s attorney general are questioning its safety.

Last year, on a remote stretch of northern Arizona forest, President Biden designated the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni—Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.

“From time immemorial, more than a dozen tribal nations have lived, gathered, prayed on these lands,” Biden said as he addressed an enthusiastic crowd of tribal leaders, members of Congress, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and advocates.

The monument designation permanently banned new uranium mining claims on nearly a million acres adjacent to Grand Canyon National Park and blocks what could have been hundreds of new operations in an area that is culturally significant to the Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo and others.

“Our nation’s history is etched in our people and in our lands. Today’s action is going to protect and preserve that history,” said Biden, as Red Butte, one of the Havasupai Tribe’s most sacred sites, loomed in the background.

The declaration was also a recognition of a far darker history, the more than 500 abandoned uranium mines on and near the Navajo Nation left over from the Cold War era that are blamed for deaths, cancers and other grave health problems in many of the region’s Indigenous communities.

“When it comes to uranium specifically, I think there’s almost a moral obligation to say no and to make that message strong,” says Navajo Nation first lady and former Arizona legislator Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren.

She says radiation exposure killed two of her grandparents, one of whom was a uranium miner. It is an all-too-common story on Navajo and a hardship that’s touched nearly every family there. But one previously established mine that has been on hold for decades and is located within the national monument can legally still operate because of preexisting rights. And it started producing uranium ore earlier this year.

“It’s just you and the miners that you’re working with accomplishing a goal,” says Pinyon Plain Mine Assistant Superintendent Matt Germansen.

He has just stepped off a cage-like elevator after taking the five-minute ride almost 1,500 feet to the bottom of the mineshaft. A ventilation system whirs above a diesel front-loader and a small team of workers including miners, electricians and welders. They have their sights set on digging out a geological formation called a breccia pipe that contains some of the highest-grade uranium ore in the U.S.

“We have basically everything we need to operate down here from heavy equipment to first aid to electrical power systems,” Germansen says as he walks through the tunnels of the subterranean operation.

He and the mine’s owner, Energy Fuels , say the mine is safe and won’t affect the Grand Canyon’s groundwater or environment — something conservationists have challenged for years. The company says Biden’s designation has stymied the area’s potential for significant uranium development.

“To declare a national monument is certainly frustrating because it feels like it was done without the science backing it,” Germansen says.

But that science remains inconclusive. Hydrologists with the U.S. Geological Survey have studied the area for more than a decade and have sampled thousands of water sources throughout the Grand Canyon. They say there is no definitive evidence of water contamination from Pinyon Plain or other uranium mines. But they caution that they do not yet have a complete picture of its complex geology and many uncertainties remain.

Tribes in the region have been steadfast in their opposition and have fought uranium mining near the Grand Canyon for decades. The Havasupai, whose reservation is at the bottom of the canyon, worry that Pinyon Plain could pollute its sole water source. They, along with environmental groups, challenged a 1986 environmental analysis by the U.S. Forest Service that found almost no risk of contamination. But the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled it valid and reaffirmed the company’s right to mine in 2022. Earlier this month, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes questioned the nearly 40-year-old science in the original study and asked the agency, which manages the land where the mine is located, to conduct a new one.

Energy Fuels maintains that Pinyon Plain, Arizona’s only currently operational uranium mine, is a key part of the global transition away from fossil fuels. It’s expected to produce about 2.5 million pounds of processed uranium over its lifespan of three or more years.

“If we’re going to address climate change, nuclear has to be part of that. There’s just no way to get there without nuclear. Uranium powers nuclear,” says Curtis Moore, Energy Fuels’ senior vice president for marketing and corporate development.

While interest in the U.S. for carbon emissions-free nuclear power is ramping up, a significant supply of uranium just became off-limits for geopolitical reasons.

“A big one is Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing atrocities in Ukraine,” Moore says.

Earlier this year, Biden signed a law that bans U.S. imports of uranium from Russia. It took effect in August. Previously, the U.S. had imported about $1 billion worth annually.

Amid these changes in the global market, in late July Energy Fuels sent its first truckloads of ore from the Pinyon Plain Mine to its White Mesa Mill in southern Utah for processing. The route crosses a large part the Navajo Nation, and the unexpected move by the company ignited numerous protests in the region.

“Our people are still dying today. They’re suffering. There’s so much generational trauma that uranium has brought to our people,” says Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren.

He spoke to several dozen community members, activists and others in early August in the reservation town of Cameron, which is along the haul route on U.S. Highway 89, just days after the ore shipments passed through. Nygren then led a protest march along the highway, which backed up traffic as leaders sang traditional songs in the Diné language and held a large yellow and red banner calling for the closure of the mine and respect for tribal sovereignty.

The tribe outlawed uranium ore hauling in 2012, and Nygren has vowed to stop any future shipments. Energy Fuels, however, says it's well within its rights to use state and federal highways through the reservation for its deliveries. And they are adamant that the ore has low levels of radiation and is safe to transport.

But soon after the first truckloads crossed the Navajo Nation, the company put the shipments on hold at the request of Gov. Hobbs, who is mediating talks between the Energy Fuels and tribal officials. There’s no timeline for when hauling may restart, but the pause has done little to quell opposition to Pinyon Plain as activists, tribal members and leaders continue to fight uranium mining near the Grand Canyon.

“It’s a humanitarian issue that we face here on Navajo because it’s killed thousands of our people,” Nygren says.
