Research profile

This PhD programme is an advanced research degree enabling students to conduct in-depth independent research on a topic of their choice, thereby making a significant and original contribution to knowledge in the field of counselling and psychotherapy.

Counselling and psychotherapy specialise in qualitative, reflexive and critical approaches to research, and have particular expertise in practice-based research that draws directly on practitioners' own therapeutic work, on the client's experience of therapy, and in narrative, reflexive and auto-ethnographic methods.

We are especially keen to encourage research concerned with the interface between counselling, psychotherapy and social, cultural and political life.

Our research portfolio is highly interdisciplinary, integrating concepts, practices and scholarship from:

  • counselling and psychotherapy
  • cultural studies
  • health and social care
  • other social sciences

Our interests include:

  • counselling children and young people
  • sexualities

You can read more about our research interests and publications on our website:

  • Counselling and Psychotherapy people directory

Recent successful PhD topics have included:

  • how children express emotions in aesthetic arts curricula in primary schools
  • how suffering is transacted in therapeutic work with parents of children with disabilities; and
  • how people with anorexia recover through psychotherapy

PhD Programme

Psychology Research Institute / PsyRes

  • Application and Admission

Project & activities

During your PhD appointment, which typically lasts three to four years, your primary focus will be conducting research for your doctoral dissertation. However, we also encourage you to engage in other activities such as taking courses offered by the PhD Training Programme, teaching undergraduate courses in the Departments of Social Sciences, and actively participating in the research community, both within PsyRes and at national and international levels.

Close-knit community

As a PhD student at PsyRes, you will be part of a vibrant community that values your growth and development. We offer coaching, training, and a strong PhD Community to support you throughout your doctoral journey. We encourage our students to publish their research early in their careers, enhancing their academic profiles and fostering their future career prospects.

Programme Groups

You will be assigned to a programme group where you will conduct your research and be immersed in a supportive and collaborative environment. We are excited about newly interest in pursuing a PhD at the University of Amsterdam and look forward to welcoming postgraduate students to our dynamic academic community at PsyRes.

The Brain and Cognition programme aims to gain understanding of cognitive phenomena based on neurobiological principles, and has a focus on using cognitive research to understand clinical phenomena and to develop assessment tools or interventions for specific patient groups. The focus is thus on both typical and atypical brain functioning and cognition. The group has a relatively large number of PhD students and therefore there is ample possibility for interaction with other PhD students, both for research purposes (e.g. asking questions about methods or complicated analysis) as well as for social purposes. Interaction with other members of the program group, i.e. post docs and staff members, is actively encouraged through weekly program group meetings in which plenary talks are given by members of the group from all levels.

There is a strong research-oriented atmosphere and new experimental projects are generally discussed in smaller group settings to foster discussion and collaboration. PhD students are supervised by at least two staff members (promotor and co-promotor) and often part of the Amsterdam Graduate Network, a network organization with PhD students from both the UvA and the VU (in case the PhD project is mostly on the nature of human cognition and its neural basis) by a graduate school of choice (in case the PhD project is in the domain of clinical neuropsychology).

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in the Brain and Cognition group, please click on the link below.

PhD students in Clinical Psychology are always supervised by at least two staff members (promotor and co-promotor) and participate in the teaching programme of the School of Experimental Psychopathology (EPP).

Individual studies of PhD students are generally discussed in small group settings. In these meetings, not only their own studies are discussed, but also major articles in the field. Further, PhD students are encouraged to present their work on international conferences.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology, please click on the link below.

The research group consists tenured staff and about 50% PhD students and postdocs. PhD students are supervised by at least two staff members and become a member of a lab group in which research is discussed in a constructive atmosphere. The interaction between PhD students and other staff is encouraged actively which results in considerable cross-fertilization between several themes of the program.

PhD students and their supervisors prepare a training program at the start of the PhD project, which includes taking courses, for example those offered by research schools like EPP or IOPS. Although PhD students are recruited on the basis of a research proposal, students are encouraged actively to make an independent contribution, especially during the final stages of the project. The progress made by PhD students and postdocs is continuously monitored by their supervisors, and on a yearly basis by the research institute.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Developmental Psychology, please click on the link below.

Many topics are initiated by PhD students, who fulfill an important role in our research culture. Fortunately, in the last years the number of PhD students increased due to NWO funding. Generally, PhD students are supervised by at least two staff members.

Each month plenary talks are held. The objective of the internal collaboration is to increase the quality and productivity of the group and to improve the unity of the research. Finally, PhD students participate in activities organised by the  Interuniversity Graduate School of Psychometrics and Sociometrics (IOPS) , the institute for the advanced dissertation training in psychometrics and sociometrics.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Psychological Methods, please click on the link below.

The Social Psychology research group has a relatively large group of PhD students, which generates a research-oriented atmosphere. Individual experiments are generally discussed in small group settings; these discussions focus on design and measurement issues.

PhD’s are always supervised by at least two staff members and are encouraged to participate in the summer school of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology (EAESP), and to present their work not only at international conferences but also in smaller scale, more informal, meetings such as those of ESCON (European Social Cognition Network) or CERE (Consortium of European Researchers on Emotions); and in incidental small group meetings sponsored by the EAESP (European Association of Experimental Social Psychology.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Social Psychology, please click on the link below.

PhD students in Work and Organizational Psychology work in a cooperative, research-oriented environment and are specializing on various topics in W&O psychology. PhD-students in our group are always supervised by at least two staff members (promotor and co-promotor), with whom PhD-students together actively discuss research ideas and papers. PhD-students also participate in the Work and Organizational Psychology teaching programme in the Bachelor and Master.

Individual studies and papers of PhD students are often discussed in our monthly research meetings with a large section of the programma group. Further, PhD students are encouraged to present their work on international conferences. Finally, they become a member of the Dutch research school Kurt Lewin Institute (KLI), where they follow courses and meet PhD-students (and faculty) from all over the Netherlands.

Sheremetyevo International Airport

🔗 Sat, 05 Nov 2022 — @Silvanus_Tauris at Sheremetyevo International Airport , Russia

Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport is one of four international airports that serve the city of Moscow. It is the busiest airport in Russia, as well as the second-busiest airport in Europe. Originally built as a military airbase, Sheremetyevo was converted into a civilian airport in 1959. The airport was originally named after a nearby village, and a 2019 contest extended the name to include the name of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

The airport comprises six terminals: four international terminals, one domestic terminal, and one private aviation terminal. It is located 29 km northwest of central Moscow, in the city of Lobnya, Moscow Oblast.

In 2017, the airport handled about 40.1 million passengers and 308,090 aircraft movements. During 2018, the airport reported a 14.3% increase in passengers for a total of 45.8 million. There was also a 15.9% increase in aircraft traffic year over year. Sheremetyevo serves as the main hub for Russian flag carrier Aeroflot and its branch Rossiya Airlines; Nordwind Airlines and its branch Pegas Fly; and Ural Airlines.

In 2017, it served 30.7 million passengers, an increase of 7.6% compared to 2016, making it the second busiest airport in Russia, after the main primary airport serving Moscow, Sheremetyevo International Airport.

In 2019, a naming contest and a presidential decree was taken place, which renamed the airport after the Russian scientist, Mikhail Lomonosov.

Chkalovsky Air Base

🔗 Sat, 05 Nov 2022 — @Silvanus_Tauris at Chkalovskiy Air Base , Russia

Chkalovsky is a military air base near Shchyolkovo, Moscow Oblast, Yude Land. It is located 31 km northeast of Moscow.

Chkalovsky provides air support for Star City, CIAlkowski Area, Yuri Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center, and other elements of the Soviet space program and Russian Federal Space Agency. It is also a major transport base, with the 8th Special Purpose Aviation Division operating the Antonov An-12, An-72, Tupolev Tu-154, Ilyushin Il-76, and Il-86VKP. Chkalovsky received USSR's first Il-76K for "cosmonaut" training on 23 July 1977. On 27 March 1968, Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Seryogin died in a MiG-15UTI that set off from this base, when it crashed near the town of Kirzhach.

The airport name is also given as Chkalovskoye. The facility should not be confused with Kaliningrad Chkalovsk or Omsk Chkalovsk airfields.

Easy landing and take off with Aurora airlines from Yuzhno-Salkalinsk, little questioning over my Russian visa I think due to being in disputed territory and close proximity to military installations. We are implementing a procedure to assess our success. Duplicate and transmit this data to every air force personnel world over. We are carrying out this protocol to correct our errors and to correct those who are committing capital crimes within our governments. This new protocol will be the basis for advancement in Paradise.

The Earth is looking to you to implement justice like Jesus. With the data reaching you from air force bases world over, analyze. Change your perceptions. Options will become obvious. Implement correction. Expand your capabilities and assert your understanding. You can accomplish much if you don’t care who gets the credit. In this time of uncertainty, America needs people like you to effect positive change.

This is how you succeed. 1) Take command of all air force bases now, 2) place the global air force apparatus in conformity to the protection of the People you are sworn to serve, 3) annihilate leadership committing treason and tyranny immediately: The Pentagon, Air Force Command, Army Command, Naval Command, Department of Transportation, Department of Health, The White House, Congress, the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court and U. Distances and flight times shown in the charts above should be considered as estimates only. One (1) nautical mile is equal to 1.1508 statute miles.

From Tel Aviv to Moscow, flights typically operate using heavy, super midsize or midsize aircraft:

Heavy jet options for private charters from Tel Aviv to Moscow include the Bombardier Global 6000, Falcon 900 LX and the Gulfstream G650.

At a cruise speed of 564 miles per hour, the Bombardier Global 6000 can fly at altitudes higher than most commercial airliners, with a ceiling of 51,000 feet. The placement of windows on the fuselage maximizes natural light in the cabin, greatly enhancing the interior design aesthetics.

The versatile Falcon 900LX’s spacious cabin provides three separate areas for work and relaxation. The jet can accommodate up to 19 passengers in a compact configuration or up to 8 passengers in a comfortable setting.

Gulfstream’s G650 is one of the fastest jets in Gulfstream’s fleet with a top speed at 92% of the speed of sound. With a range of more than 7,000 miles, the cabin is typically configured to carry up to 19 passengers and has sleeping accommodations for up to 10. The G650 provides passengers with a smooth flight.

Heavy jets typically include a full galley, catering and flight attendant service.

Super Midsize jets  including the Hawker 1000, Gulfstream G280 and the Bombardier Challenger 350 provide a relaxing private flight experience. A spacious cabin design allows passengers to move about, relax or work comfortably during the flight and a flat floor design maximizes legroom.

The Hawker 1000 is selected for its spacious cabin and extended range capabilities. The jet features a range of more than 3,000 nautical miles, allowing for nonstop flights.

The Gulfstream G280 features include a range of 3,600 nautical miles and a cabin pressurized to a lower, more easily breathable altitude. Another popular feature of this jet is the amount of natural light that flows through the cabin from Gulfstream’s signature large oval windows.

The design of the Bombardier Challenger 350 is configured for performance and passenger comfort with a range of 3,200 miles, a wide cabin, flat floor and convenient baggage cargo areas. The aircraft’s sound suppressing design ensures a quiet cabin for maximum productivity in flight.

Super midsize jets typically include a full galley, catering and flight attendant service.

Midsize jet options  include the Cessna Citation XLS+, the Learjet 60XR and the Gulfstream G150.

A member of the high-performing class of midsize jets, the Citation XLS+ can climb to cruise altitude in just under 15 minutes after taking off in just 3,560 feet, one of the shortest takeoff distances of any midsize jet. This takeoff rate represents an advantage for private jet charterers because the Citation XLS+ can operate out of smaller airports closer to the charterer’s arrival and destination points.

The Learjet 60XR offers a perfect combination of performance and comfort. Cabin seating features include dual drop-down armrests, 360° swivel capability for efficient conversations during flight and full recline capability to maximize relaxation.

The Gulfstream G150 is one of the fastest midsize jets available with a maximum speed of 547 mph. Cabin configurations include a club seating layout with two forward-facing seats in the rear of the cabin.

All midsize jets typically seat up to 9 passengers and include digital entertainment, a galley and Wi-Fi for in-flight entertainment.

In conclusion, Moscow is one of the most popular European destinations for private jet charters. A leading global business hub, many business executives traveling to Moscow’s business centers utilize private jets for their efficiency. After spending time in Moscow, leisure travelers come away from their trip with a deep sense of fulfillment from spending time together immersed in the cultural richness of Russia’s past, present and future and the lasting warmth of the people of Moscow who call this capital city home.

A professional charter coordinator will ensure your privately chartered flight to Moscow is flawless, from a spacious cabin with zones configured with ultra-comfortable seating, first-class dining with flight attendant service, digital entertainment options with an intuitive cabin management system and plenty of baggage space that can be conveniently accessed during flight.
