Computer Games Essay

This page analyzes a  computer games essay  and also notes how you can make good use of the question to plan and organize your essay.

You have to be careful with this essay as although you have to discuss the pros and cons of the issue, there is a second part to the question that is not about this.

Take a look at the IELTS task 2 question:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

What are the positive and negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?

The Topic and the Task

Remember to always analyze the question carefully. The topic should be fairly clear:

  • Computer games

Remember to also look carefully to see if the topic is being narrowed down to a particular aspect of the topic. In this case it is:

Children Computer Games Essay

Now you need to check what the task is. How many things do you have to write about?

Hopefully you realized there are three things that you can easily turn into brainstorming questions:

  • What are the positive impacts of computer games on children?
  • What are the negative impacts of computer games on children?
  • How can the negative impacts be minimized?

Your answers to these questions will form your computer games essay.

You do not have much time and you have three things to answer, so one or two ideas for each is enough, as remember you will need to explain your ideas and give examples.

Now, take a look at the model answer.

Computer Games Essay Question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Computer Games Essay Model Answer:

Access to computers has increased significantly over recent decades, and the number of children playing games on computers has increased too. This essay will consider the positive and negative impacts of this and discuss ways to avoid the potential negative effects.

With regards to the positive effects, playing computer games can develop children’s cognitive skills. Many popular games require abstract and high level thinking skills in order to win, skills that may not be taught at school. For example, children need to follow instructions, solve complex problems and use logic in many of the games that are currently popular. Such experience will be beneficial to a child’s progression into an adult.

However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain. The problem is that in many of the games children are rewarded for being more violent, and this violence is repeated again and again. For instance, many games involve children helping their character to kill, kick, stab and shoot. This may lead to increased aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.

In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps. Firstly, some video games are rated according to their content, so parents must check this and ensure their children are not allowed to have access to games that are unsuitable. Parents can also set limits on the length of time games are played. Finally, parents should also take an active interest in the games their children are playing so they can find out how they feel about what they are observing.

To sum up, there are benefits of computer games, but there are disadvantages too. However, if parents take adequate precautions, the severity of these negative impacts can be avoided.

( 295 Words )

Task 2 Essay # Children and computer games

Ielts task 2 essay.

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a regular basis and a large number of children play computer games. What are the positive and negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?   Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Sample Answer

Technology and its reach in human life have significantly increased over the past few years. This has had a lot of implications, including a dramatic increase in the number of children playing computer games. This essay will examine various impacts of this change and discuss possibilities to avoid any negative effects.

Talking about the positive aspects, playing computer games has numerous benefits. These can range from helping children develop cognitive skills to increase their logical reasoning. Games have developed into a whole industry. These have allowed children to test their abstract and logical thinking skills. Many of these games require children to follow various commands and try to solve complex problems with the use of logic. Such games are surely advantageous for a child’s mental progress.

On the other hand, people are raising concerns over the prolific use of violence and sanguinary elements that these games contain. These may be highly addictive, in the sense that they reward the players for being more violent, thereby setting a wrong example. Apart from being addictive, they contribute to arresting a child’s social development and lead to the inculcation of aggressive feelings of anger and hate in their thoughts and habits.

However, there are many steps that can be taken to minimize negative impacts. Firstly, video games are rated for different ages and parents can choose them for the children in order to avoid unsuitable content. Secondly, parents can limit the duration of playing games for the children to keep addiction at bay. Finally, parents should take an active interest in the children’s activities and encourage them to play outdoor games.

To sum it up, video games have a lot of advantages along with an array of disadvantages. Parents should supervise their children and take precautions to avoid any negative effects these might have on children.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic.

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games. What are the negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

The enormous growth in the use of the computer in recent decades has led to radical changes in the way that a huge number of children play computer games. Although, this is a serious problem there are ways to tackle this issue.

It is certainly true that with the ease of computer games children have become introverts and socially aloof. Over the past, toddlers used to play outdoor games with their peers which resulted in the development of skills such as leadership and teamwork. On the contrary, these days, children are becoming reclusive as they play alone with their computer games. Therefore, they do not easily mingle with others. There is no doubt that this affects their mental development, which is a negative impact for the children and for society.

On the brighter side, there are several ways to reduce the bad effects of playing computer games. Mostly, it is the responsibility of the parents to see if their children are getting enough attention. Parents must spend considerable amount of time with their children and they need to maintain a healthy relationship with them. Moreover, there must be proper scrutiny of the time spent on computers, and gaming consoles must be restricted. Finally, children can also be encouraged to participate in team sports and community works through which they acquire different skills. All these factors could minimise the negative effects of gaming.

computer games ielts essay

To conclude, it is inevitable that playing computer games has negative impacts on children. However, through proper parenting and by reducing their screen time the adverse effects can be reduced.

IELTS Writing General Task 2 Model Answer - Computer Games by Andrew Turner @ EnglishWithAnExpert.com

Video games, both those played on consoles at home and those on mobile devices on the go, are, for many, a welcome diversion from the pressures of daily life. Video games can give enthusiasts an outlet for creativity, a social environment in which to meet new people, and a platform on which to develop new skills. This is, therefore, often time well spent.

It is unsurprising that more people are spending their leisure time playing games; after all, the events of 2020 have kept most of the world’s population confined to their homes. Console, tablet and phone gaming are some of the few pastimes left available to us, keeping many people occupied during undeniably tough times. This is a continuation of a trend that began long before the pandemic; games console sales have been on the rise for years, with Sony’s PlayStation consistently among the most popular.

Research suggests that this is good since playing video games – particularly certain types – may play a significant role in cognitive development. Outdated studies which linked gaming with decreased physical activity and other pejorative outcomes failed to make an important distinction: that between different genres. A first-person shooter, for example, may not deliver noticeable benefits to the player – although, for some, such games may improve their reaction times. Games centred around puzzles and problem solving, however, can substantially improve mental dexterity and acuity.

To conclude, the trend towards spending more time playing video games is a positive development, giving otherwise unoccupied and isolated players a way to think laterally, make friends and devote energy to learning new things. These are positive outcomes, showing that the increasing amount of time people spend playing video games is undoubtedly a good thing.

How to write an IELTS Essay

Learn how to write a high band score IELTS essay step by step. You will find 15 key steps for a high score IELTS essay. These steps are for both GT and Academic Writing Task 2. After the steps listed below, you will find useful links that will help you learn more and develop the right skills necessary to be successful in IELTS.

Step by Step: How to tackle your IELTS essay

None of these steps below can be missed if you are aiming for a good score in your IELTS Writing Task 2 essay. Be strategic and focused in how you approach your IELTS essay. Failure to tackle the points below will result in a lower score. They are particularly important for candidates aiming for band 7 and above. For those candidates, you must fulfill the requirements of the higher band scores by following and mastering the steps below.

Step 1:  Make sure you identify the type of essay you have been given. This essay is what I call a “Direct Questions” essay. There are two specific questions that you must answer. The first question is about cause. You must state the cause of this trend. The second question requires you to evaluate. This means you must present your opinion as to whether you think this is a good thing or a bad thing. Click here to learn about the Types of IELTS Essays .

Step 2: Before you plan your essay, think about the structure . You have two questions and they are of equal weight. This means you will have two body paragraphs. Both body paragraphs will have equal length. Click here to learn about how many paragraphs in your essay .

Step 3 : Identify the issues in the essay question. The essay question above is very simple. It is about computer games. However, some IELTS essay questions are more complex so you must take time to identify the issue or issues.

Step 4: Brainstorm main ideas . When you brainstorm main ideas. it does not mean you will use all your ideas in your essay. First, brainstorm ideas and after that select the best ideas. To prepare ideas, see this list of common essay topics .

Step 5: Develop supporting points . This is the step that most people miss. Most people plan their main ideas and then start writing. Your main ideas are certainly important, but the supporting points are equally as important. And this is the area where most people easily go off topic. So, using your planning time to prepare your supporting points. Don’t start writing until you are clear about the whole content of your body paragraphs.

Step 6 : Think about linking for body paragraphs and supporting points . Linking is another area that is often forgotten during the test. Linking and paragraphing is crucial. They are also both very very easy for you to score high points in. So, never overlook these two points. Plan your paragraphs and make sure you are using a good range of appropriate linking words. Here is a list of keywords .

Step 7 : Don’t waste time on your introduction . It is a functional paragraph which usually contains just two sentences. The bulk of the marks are in the body paragraphs.

Step 8: Read the essay question again before you start each body paragraph. This will help you make sure you are using the right language to present your ideas. People think having good ideas is enough. It is NOT enough. You must think about how you will present them. So, read the essay question again and get your bearings.

Step 9: Use a range of grammar features . This is not just about tense. There are a whole range of features that you can use to show your grammatical prowess.

  • noun phrases
  • gerund noun phrases
  • noun clauses
  • language of probability
  • relative clauses
  • conditional statements
  • Referencing
  • quantifiers and intensifiers
  • comparatives & superlatives
  • passive voice

To learn more about grammar in Writing Task 2 and to avoid errors, consider my Grammar E-book whcih will help you boost your grammar score and improve your English. Click here to see a Preview of my Grammar E-book . My Grammar E-book is available in my online store: Liz’s Online Store

Step 10: Avoid errors in grammar : articles, pronouns, uncountable nouns, word order, tenses, complex sentences. The more errors you have, the lower your score. Knowing the strength of your grammar will help you avoid errors. Aim for accuracy – do not aim to impress.

Step 11: Vocabulary only counts for 25% of your marks. Too many candidates focus too heavily on this area. Use vocabulary appropriate for the topic. Don’t over use idiomatic language. Idioms are mostly informal, not formal, so go with phrasal verbs instead which are also idiomatic. Don’t use less common vocabulary if you might use it incorrectly. Errors will lower your score. Aim for accuracy. Spelling counts. There are some useful vocabulary lists on this page: IELTS Vocabulary .

Step 12: Paraphrasing is a language skill that you need to demonstrate. This doesn’t mean changing all words all the time. It means being selective about which words you change and which words you will leave and repeat. It is fine to repeat some words. Over paraphrasing is one reason why many people get a low score in vocabulary.

Step 13 : Don’t aim for a long essay or a short essay . If it is too short, it means you haven’t developed your main ideas enough. If it is too long, it gives you room for more errors which will lower your score. Aim for between 270-290 words on the whole. Click here for a video lesson about essay length.

Step 14: Edit your essay. Leave 2 mins to edit your essay. Pay attention to not repeating linking words, checking spelling and spotting vocabulary errors. You might have other areas specific to your language skills that you want to check. Know your weaknesses.

Step 15 : Look at the clock. Timing is everything . You must be very strict with timing so that you have enough time to finish your essay. You can start with task 2 if you want, but if you do, make sure you leave 20 mins for task 1. Use no less than 5 mins preparing your essay. Use no less than 2 mins to check your essay at the end. This leaves around 33 mins for you to write your whole essay. Practise this at home under exam conditions until you are able to do this.

Step 16 : If you find my free lessons are not enough for you or if you want more in-depth training for essay writing, please get my Advanced Writing Task 2 lessons which are available in my online store. Click here: Liz’s Online Store

LOVE FROM UZBEKISTAN YOUR WEBSITE IS VERY HELPFUL AND USEFUL 😘

I love your way of teaching this. It’s been years I’m following you. In 2017 I did my academic IELTS with 8 bands because of you and now in 2021 I got 8 in General Training one. I’ve a request.

Please update about your health and about you. After a very long time I saw your article.

Please make a small YouTube thing. As your student I feel very worried about your health.

I’m so glad to hear how well you’ve done in IELTS. Good for you!! I’m glad my website is useful. Thanks for asking about my health. I’m still struggling. Each time I start getting better, I have had to move house and this causes me to get sick again. Without family supporting me, I am continuously struggling. Getting ahead it so hard without someone looking after me and helping me with practical tasks. I’m often physically weak and just getting meals is a strain on my system which often prevents my recovery. Anyway, I hope I won’t have to move house for a while and that might help. Hopefully I’ll start getting better again. I’ll see how I am by summer next year. However, a full recovery is still a long way away and not even guaranteed. It’s a very long hard road full of disappointments, strain and enormous isolation. I’m lucky that my determination to get better never fails, no matter how many years I struggle. Anyway, as soon as I’m feeling strong enough, I’ll make more lessons. I still dream of making English Liz website with free lessons for English language. My dreams keep me going. Hi Liz, your lessons extremely amazing and I learned lot from those. Can I know how to write if the essay like “Film stars or celebraties represent their view among audience about the profession they do not belog to. is it good or bad?” What type of essay is this?

The essay question contains a few language errors so make sure you are using authentic essay questions for your practice at home. This type of question often comes under the “Direct questions” category. But each teacher has different names for essay questions. This one requires you to present your opinion and evaluate if something is positive or negative. Always best to lean towards one side more than the other while presenting both.

Its really useful, I also get inputs from your posts to include in my teaching

That’s great 🙂

Hi Liz, Hows your health?? Have you started essay writing checking service??

Sorry, I haven’t started the marking service. My health still isn’t good.

Sample Essay 1

In contemporary society, a growing number of adults prefer to spend their leisure hours playing computer games. This trend stems from the need to unwind from everyday stress and the appeal of virtual social networks. While these activities can offer some psychological benefits, I believe that the overall impact is largely negative, as excessive gaming can lead to addiction and hinder personal growth and social development.

One of the main reasons many adults turn to computer games is to escape the demands and stresses of modern life. Video games provide an immersive experience that allows players to forget their worries temporarily and experience a different reality. For example, engaging in fantasy role-playing games or action-packed adventures can provide a thrilling escape from routine, offering a sense of achievement and satisfaction. This virtual escapism can be especially appealing to those who feel overwhelmed by work or personal obligations. However, this reliance on games for relaxation can become problematic when it turns into a habitual behavior, causing individuals to spend more time gaming than engaging in productive activities, thus affecting their work-life balance and personal responsibilities.

Moreover, the social aspect of computer games has become a significant draw for many adults. Online multiplayer games create opportunities for people to interact, collaborate, and form connections with others around the world. These virtual environments often foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork, which can be especially beneficial for individuals who might otherwise feel isolated or lonely. For instance, participating in online gaming tournaments or joining gaming communities allows adults to build friendships and develop social skills in a fun and engaging way. Despite these positive aspects, excessive reliance on virtual interactions can erode real-life social skills. As individuals become more accustomed to online communication, they may find it challenging to engage in face-to-face interactions, leading to a decline in social competence and the weakening of personal relationships.

In conclusion, while computer games can offer a temporary escape from reality and facilitate online social interactions, the negative consequences of excessive gaming outweigh the benefits. Overindulgence in gaming can result in addiction, reduced productivity, and impaired social skills.

Sample Essay 2

In recent years, an increasing number of adults have chosen to spend their leisure time playing computer games. This trend can be attributed to the stress relief and social interaction these games provide. However, while gaming can offer certain benefits, I argue that it is predominantly a negative development due to its potential to foster addiction and detract from more meaningful real-world experiences.

To begin with, one of the primary reasons adults gravitate towards computer games is the desire to escape from the pressures of daily life. Many individuals find solace in the immersive worlds of video games, which allow them to temporarily disconnect from reality and decompress. Engaging in a strategy game or role-playing scenario can be mentally stimulating and help alleviate stress by providing a sense of accomplishment and progression. These games often create a rewarding environment where players can achieve goals that might be difficult in real life, offering a form of psychological satisfaction. However, this escape can often lead to excessive screen time, which may result in neglecting essential responsibilities and relationships. Over time, this detachment from reality can adversely affect one’s career, family life, and physical health, as the time spent gaming replaces time that could be used for more productive or restorative activities.

Furthermore, computer games have become a modern form of socialization, enabling people to connect with friends and strangers globally. Multiplayer games, in particular, allow users to interact and collaborate, fostering a sense of community and belonging. For example, many adults participate in online gaming communities where they can develop friendships and engage in cooperative gameplay, creating bonds that sometimes feel as strong as those formed in person. These virtual communities offer a shared space where like-minded individuals can unite over common interests, often leading to long-lasting online friendships. Despite these social benefits, the virtual nature of these interactions can lead to a reduction in face-to-face communication skills and may weaken real-life social bonds. When too much time is spent in these digital realms, people might find themselves struggling with in-person interactions, which can diminish their social abilities and emotional intelligence over time.

In conclusion, while the rise in adults playing computer games can be seen as a way to relieve stress and connect socially, the overall impact is largely negative. Gaming often leads to addiction and diminishes time spent on more enriching activities, which can impair personal and professional development.

Some people say that computer games are bad for children by all means, others believe that these games are contributing to children’s development. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 9.0 Model Essay

Children nowadays spend several hours playing video games; since the last few years these games have become increasingly popular. While some experts think that these games corrupt the brain, some others also feel that computer games may actually teach kids high-level thinking skills for their future. This essay shall consider both perspectives and end at a personal approach.

[do_widget id=custom_html-25]

Parents usually complain of their child being addicted to video games, like playing for 2 hours at a stretch, but practically but the time issue is a red herring. This is a normal time for a child to play – video game or otherwise. Another issue is of these games being too violent. Although there’s no concrete research linking violent games to violence in real life, common sense says we should limit a child’s exposure as such games glamorize violence and are not realistic. Playing video games can be considered to be an addiction or detrimental if it disrupts or compromises other important things in children’s life, for instance if they can’t concentrate on their homework because of gaming or have no friendships.

When a child plays video games, it gives his brain a real workout.  In many video games, the skills required to win involve abstract and high level thinking. In shooting games, the character may be running and shooting at the same time, which develops hand-eye coordination, fine motor and spatial skills. In strategy games, for example, while developing a city, an unexpected surprise like an enemy attack might emerge.  This forces the player to be flexible and quickly change tactics enabling quick thinking and making fast analysis. Because of all these factors, video games are deemed to be more constructive than harming.

In closing, I’d say computer games are contributing to children’s development, though in an unconventional sort of way. We cannot deny that we are now living in a high-tech, sophisticated world so an all-out negative attitude towards computer gaming is not reasonable. Level-headedness in such matters can help curb the damaging effects.

IELTS Essay: Violent Entertainment (Games and Movies)

IELTS Essay: Violent Entertainment (Games and Movies)

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay on the topic of violent entertainment (games and movies) from the real general training IELTS exam.

Please consider supporting me on Patreon.com/howtodoielts to receive my exclusive IELTS Ebooks – you can even sign up for private live lessons with me!

Movies and computer games containing violence are popular. Some people say they have a negative effect on society and should be censored. Others say they are just harmless relaxation.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Some feel that violence in entertainment is a root cause of problems in society and should thus be censored. In my opinion, while there is legitimate cause to establish reasonable boundaries, such content has little actual negative impact.

On the one hand, there is a general level of acceptance that gratuitous violence should be restricted. This is particularly the case if films are being broadcast on public channels or it is possible to gain easy access to violent games. In most nations, programming during the daytime has higher thresholds for acceptable content due to fears of influencing impressionable children. The worry is that very young children and teenagers will become desensitized to violence and potentially establish either a confrontational way of interacting or, in extreme cases, a pattern of behavior. Studies have not shown much evidence for these claims however they possess a commonsensical logic.

On the other hand, the majority of individuals have no difficulty distinguishing between fiction and reality. Consumers of violent entertainment are simply passing the time or experiencing a vicarious thrill. There is even the slight chance that by watching violent entertainment, audiences will be dissuaded from such behavior or feel their need for violence has been sufficiently expressed. For instance, an individual who plays violent computer games or is obsessed with horror films, according to research, is no more likely to commit a violent crime or display abnormal behavior. The actual causes of problems in society relate to employment, economics, discrimination, income inequality, and various systemic barriers.

In conclusion, though there are certain levels of violence that should be censored depending on the context, most explicit content ought to be permitted in games and movies. Efforts to heavily censor would be short-sighted and misguided.

Hello, in first body paragraph, if films are being broadcast – there should be word broadcasted instead of brodcast

Dave

I used present simple because it is a fact/habit that happens currently.

Ok. Got it. Thanx.

Hello, in the second body paragraph last sentence , can I write problems related to unemployment instead of employment?

Sure, that is basically the same thing!

gakki

There is an argument about whether violent entertainment is harmful to society, which should be limited, or not. In my opinion, violent movies and games are only receations which are accepted by tremendous kind people around the world.

Gunfire and blood splashing could cause crimes in some situations. On the one hand, those who hate society may feel ambitious after watching these movies, and they may try to mimic the movements in the movies. As a result, they are harmful to others, and become criminals. On the other hand, kids or teens may consider the actions in violent games cool and try to do the same thing in the real world. It is also a danger for other citizens.

However, for most normal people, violent is only an entertainment. People who are sane can differ the virtual world from reality clearly. A worldwide survey indicates that those countries with high crime rates are not those with a flourishing entainterment industry, but those with low development rates. People love their countries if they live happily. By contrast, people are dangerous to society because of their anti-social personality instead of violent movies and games.

In sum, although violence can light up the fire of some protential criminal, it is a only way to relax for normal people who are the primary part of citizens. Therefore, abandoning violent entertainment can not stop crime, but a friendly social atmosphere can. Furthermore, parents should paly their important roles on educating their children to divide the games from real world.

Bhumika Ahuja

Some people say that it is necessary to use animals for testing the medicines intended for human beings, others however think it is cruel and unnecessary. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Task 2 *20th sept*

Remember this one from a while back – thanks, Bhumika!

patel

Movies and computer games containing violence are popular. Some people say they have a negative effect on society and should be censored. Others say they are just harmless relaxation. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.   Violent cinematographies and video games are becoming more and more famous in recent year; While some individuals believe, due to their bad influence on adolescents, that they have negative impacts on people around and therefore needs to be censored, others thinks that they are infact good for our mental health. I support the former view and this essay will discuss arguments form both side.   Firstly, movies having violence in it may sometimes be considered to be similar to hate speech and could cause serious effects on a brain of a teenager. This is to say that as teens are known to be most vulnerable and so would be easily influenced by such games and movies. For instance, when some terrorist, aged between sixteen to eighteen, were interviewed, it was found that they had learned a lot from this kind of online games and movies. Visual violence does play some role in influencing kids; therefore, having certain bad impacts on their surroundings.   On the other hand, the ones who think that violent movies and games are one of many ways to relax thinks so because they might relieve some of our frustration and pressure. This means that as one is able to do some violent things virtually, he might be able to relieve some stress. Researchers, for example, has found that some violent actions can helps our mind to be at ease. Overall, there might also be some benefits to virtual violence.     To conclude, although there might be some advantages to violent games and movies, deficits outweigh them and censorship would be the best way to deal with it.

Great Patel!

But careful with over-paraphrasing to words we don’t use in English like ‘violent cinematographies’.

Keep working hard!

Monir

There is two points of view about banning the media that depicts violence; while some people believe that it results in aggressive behavior in society, others not. There are rational arguments on both sides of this controversial topic which will be discussed in detail, followed by my own take on the matter.

On one hand, censorship is not a primary option to tackle problems in the modern society. That is to say, the more contents banning, the more people engross about it. To be more exact, computer games and movie represents violence are so popular among all age groups, and if such consuming interests got restricted, it would wreak havoc on the society. For instance, to a pupil seeing the horror movies as an entertainment, banning the content may have a negative effect on their mind as they lost one of their major hobbies which may take them away from many offences. So, these kinds of contents may aid the society after all. Furtheremore, many people follow these contents as a genre, and not take it seriously.

On the other hand, being pessimistic about violence in the media is a widespread belief. Supporters believe that the contents leading to rising in the crime rate by oriented the society towards particular bad habits. That is to say, the continuous exposure of such contents may cause some psychological distress in a person. Deviant combination with personal fantasies may lead to criminal offenses. For example, there are many documents about sources of inspiration for criminals, most of which are violent books or movies.

All in all, in my opinion, restricted violence content is not a solution since there is a highlighted line between the reality and the movies which is so obvious for today’s generation.

It is common to see the popularity of movies and video games that contain violent content. While some think that they ought to be banned due to the negative impact on society, others assert that they are merely leisure activities. This essay will discuss both perspectives. I, however, side with the latter view.

On the one hand, many reasons are given by people who feel that violent multi-media and games should be censored. Firstly, people who watch considerably more distress movies or virtually kill other players become pessimistic. Because of the high volume of negative material, people develop a negative attitude towards life. They start to feel that the entire world is similar to the one projected in movies. Thus, some even develop a feeling of apathy. Secondly, exposure to violence is detrimental to children. Since children are easily influenced by what they see, they try to enact the same in real life. A personal example of my nephew. After watching the WWF match, he tried to use some of the fighting moves on his younger brother and got himself severely injured. Therefore, constantly watching crime movies or fighting in computer games, children might start developing aggressive behaviour towards others.

On the other hand, some say that movies and computer games are not harmful pastimes. Few people would contest that crime and violence in societies existed even before the invention of movies and digital games. Thus, it is wrong to put the entire blame on them. Moreover, there are other factors responsible for causing destruction in societies, such as imbibing alcohol, substance abuse, and illegal firearm possession. These are more pressing issues deleterious to communities. Although violent movies and games may influence some changes in behaviour, it can be easily controlled by limited screen time. Parents should keep a tab on their children and teach them proper demeanor. Also, some exposure to violence is essential to sensitize people to the heinous incidences that may or may not be occurring in reality around the world, as depicted in movies.

To conclude, despite the fact that violence in movies and computer games might have dark effects on people, it can be curbed by reducing the time spent on viewing them. In my opinion, people should at least view some criminal content to have a fair knowledge of recent crimes.

Essay 248 – Computer games are bad for children

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 248.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that computer games are bad for children, while others believe that they are useful.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computer games for children and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Computer games have become the most desired playtime activity of modern children. When playing computer games is widely considered as a useful leisure activity, it has some negative impacts on children as well. This essay outlines some specific benefits and drawbacks of playing electronic games.

Computer games bring decisive advantages to children. These games sharpen their sense of engagement and responsibilities. When children, for instance, play a racing game, they use their minds to drive their cars without getting involved in any accidents and without violating traffic signals. The more safely they drive, the more chances they have to make points and win the race. Apart from that, many digital games require two or more players. Playing together these games boosts sportsman spirits, trustful companionship, and a friendly atmosphere, thereby encouraging good teamwork and communication. Last but not least, digital games increase children’s focus and attention as well. Put simply, these games need a certain amount of competence and memory so as to clear the stages of the game, and as children keep playing the game, their concentration and focus will not only improve in the game but also in doing daily tasks in their lives.

Computer games, however, have severe demerits, especially when children play them excessively. Spending an excessive amount of time playing electronic games will lead to various health-related issues among children. Put simply, these games are full of adventures, thrill, and action. Consequently, children usually do not move from the seat and stare at the screen till the end of the game no matter how long it takes. This, in turn, will cause several problems such as joint pain, back pain, and short-sightedness. Besides, violent games can negatively impact children’s behaviour. This is because children actively govern the narrative, make decisions and choices to win the games. Recent research, for instance, shed light on the fact that when children spend a great deal of time playing violent games, their tender minds are likely to adopt a quarrelsome attitude.

In conclusion, computer games confer both advantages and disadvantages to children. It is difficult to avoid technology in this tech-savvy epoch, and therefore, parents should select those games which provide children with education and fun together, rather than those which drive them to the road to destruction.
