Computer science graduates receive dissertation awards
Yuliang li and andrew ross honored for the quality and potential impact of their research.
Yuliang Li and Andrew Ross have received the second annual Computer Science Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Awards from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences .
Li's dissertation, titled "Hardware-Software Codesign for High-Performance Cloud Networks," explores the use of emerging hardware in the cloud, and jointly designs software systems with this hardware to improve performance and robustness of cloud networks.
As Moore's law has come to an end, pure software solutions can no longer keep up with the exponentially increasing amount of data and processing required. On the other hand, hardware, although fast, is limited to only simple, special-purpose tasks. Li's research marries the high speed of hardware with the general purpose of software to significantly improve the performance and robustness of cloud networks. Li’s work was also honored with the 2020 Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) Special Interest Group on Data Communications Doctoral Dissertation Award.
He will join the Network Infrastructure team at Google Cloud, continuing his dissertation topic to build high-performance cloud networks by hardware-software codesign.
“Yuliang's thesis work made significant contributions to improve the performance and robustness of cloud networks,” said Li’s advisor, Minlan Yu , Associate Professor of Computer Science. “Today, the hardware layer in cloud networks is evolving quickly with more programmable switches and network interface cards (NICs) and higher speed. But we lack the software to best leverage and coordinate these emerging hardware. Yuliang takes an approach of hardware and software codesign and made architectural insights on identifying the best division of labor between programmable switches, NICs, hosts, and the controller.”
Andrew Ross
Ross’ dissertation, titled “Right for the Right Reasons: Training Neural Networks to be Interpretable, Robust, and Consistent with Expert Knowledge,” explores different ways of optimizing machine learning models to make predictions for better reasons. Usually, researchers teach machine learners by feeding them numerous examples of questions and associated answers, and then ask them to answer new questions. By contrast, when people teach human learners, they usually provide them with reasons as well as examples because teaching solely by example can produce ambiguity—there can be multiple procedures that arrive at the same answer, even if only one will work in practice.
When neural networks are faced with that kind of ambiguity, they often fail or end up being untrustworthy in real-world situations. Ross’ work focuses on ways of encoding extra information about "the right reason" into the process of training neural networks, so that what they ultimately learn is more robust to differences between conditions during learning and conditions in practice.
Ross will pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in interpretable machine learning for climate modeling at New York University.
“Andrew's thesis looks at interpretability in machine learning from such a variety of angles. His work on jointly optimizing for interpretability and accuracy, and connections between interpretability and robustness, has catalyzed numerous recent extensions,” said Ross’ advisor, Finale Doshi-Velez , the John L. Loeb Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “I'm often hearing from colleagues how much they love the work. He's also worked on the human side, designing ways to measure the interpretability—or understandability—of generative models. That work received an honorable mention at ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) this year.”
The Computer Science Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award at SEAS was launched in 2020 to recognize the most outstanding Ph.D. dissertations of the year. A committee of faculty chose the winners from a group of students who were nominated based on input from all graduating students’ Ph.D. committees. The award evaluates each dissertation as a cohesive body of work, and looks at research quality, potential impact, and quality of presentation.

Announcement of SIGMM Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award 2015
ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) is pleased to present the 2015 SIGMM Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award to Dr. Ting Yao and Honorable Mention recognition to Dr. Britta Meixner.
The award committee considers Dr. Yao’s dissertation entitled “Multimedia Search by Self, External, and Crowdsourcing Knowledge” worthy of the recognition as the thesis proposes an innovative knowledge transfer framework for multimedia search which is expected to have significant impact, especially in boosting the search performance for big multimedia data.
Dr. Yao’s thesis proposes the knowledge transfer methodology in three multimedia search scenarios:
(1) Seeking consensus among multiple modalities in the context of search re-ranking,
(2) Leveraging external knowledge as a prior to be transferred to a problem that belongs to a domain different from the external knowledge, and
(3) >Exploring the large user click-through data as crowdsourced human intelligence for annotation and search.
The effectiveness of the proposed framework has been successfully justified by thorough experiments. The proposed framework has substantial contributions in principled integration of multimodal data which is indispensable in multimedia search. The publications related to the thesis clearly demonstrate the major impact of this work in many research disciplines including multimedia, web, and information retrieval. The fact that parts of the proposed techniques have been and are being transferred to the commercial search service Bing further attest to the practical contributions of this thesis. Overall, the committee recognizes the significant impact and contributions presented in the thesis to the multimedia community.
Bio of Awardee
Dr. Ting Yao is an associate researcher in the Multimedia Search and Mining group at Microsoft Research, Beijing, China. His research interests are in multimedia search and computing. Two winners when Physics awards the year's best doctoral theses
Mathias Hoppe and Christopher Linderälv are winners of the Department of Physics' annual prize for the best doctoral thesis. The focus of their theses is the obstacles that stand in the way of large-scale fusion energy, respectively how materials can be modified for, for example, applications in quantum technology.
The Department of Physics' Best Thesis Award for the academic year 2022 goes to Dr. Mathias Hoppe , for his thesis entitled "Runaway-electron model development and validation in tokamaks" (supervisor Tünde Fülöp ), and to Christopher Linderälv , for his thesis entitled "Optical properties of point defects in insulators and of transition metal dichalcogenides” (supervisor Paul Erhart ).
The award committee's motivation for the awards is:
“The award committee decided to award this year’s Best PhD Award to two laureates: Dr. Mathias Hoppe and Dr. Christopher Linderälv. Their PhD theses report excellent scientific work in a way that makes science understandable to an audience outside their own research communities.
Dr. Hoppe is awarded for his solid scientific contributions to magnetic confinement fusion and for the pedagogical qualities of his thesis; the committee appreciated how Dr. Hoppe puts his work into the context of his field and introduces the reader to the world of thermonuclear devices in a thesis that is easy to read.
Dr. Linderälv wrote an excellent thesis documenting his prolific work applying first-principle calculations to understand materials properties, yet close to experiments; the committee enjoyed reading his thesis with its impressive visual quality.”
Below, the winners tell us more about the research in their theses, the writing process, and what they are doing now!
Three questions for ... Mathias Hoppe, about his winning doctoral thesis.
What are you investigating in your thesis?
"My thesis revolves around one of the major remaining obstacles that stand in the way of large-scale fusion energy: so-called runaway electrons. These electrons can, among other things, occur if the fusion fuel suddenly cools down sharply and the fusion reactions slow down. The runaway electrons are often difficult to control and if they happen to hit the wall of the fusion reactor, they risk causing major damage to the machine. My contribution to the research has primarily been to develop mathematical models and simulation codes that make it possible to partly predict how the runaway electrons arise, and partly to compare experimental measurements with simulations. The fusion reactors of the future will both have to be much larger than today's fusion experiments and use technologies that have not been tested in reality yet, and since the risks connected to runaway electrons are exponentially much worse in large fusion machines, there is basically no margin to try them out in the machines of the future. Therefore, it is extremely important to have access to well-founded and experimentally validated mathematical models that can be used to test various safety systems in advance, before the machines are built. That is exactly what my research aimed at."
What was easy and what was difficult during the process of writing the thesis?
"One of the most difficult parts of the thesis has concerned the connection between theory and experiment, namely how sufficiently simple models that simultaneously describe reality can be well formulated. Fusion and plasma physics is a very practical science where the goal is to produce as much energy as possible, and then experiments often lead to advanced technical solutions that can be extremely difficult to describe mathematically. In order to be able to reason theoretically about how the experiments can be improved, it is therefore required that just the right simplifications of the mathematics are made so that the effects of the most relevant physics show up most clearly. Fortunately, there are many very smart people working on fusion, and most are more than happy to share their ideas and experiences. So even though the questions I was faced with were often very clever, there were other researchers around, both in Sweden and the rest of the world, who were open to discussion and made it possible for me to piece by piece put together the puzzle that eventually became my thesis."
What are you doing now?
"My first stop after the defense was as a postdoc at one of Europe's largest fusion laboratories, namely the Swiss Plasma Center at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. Here I am able to apply the knowledge I have gathered during my doctoral studies and the tools I have developed to study the lab's own fusion experiments in detail. Mainly, I work with interpreting experimental results using computer simulations, and try to be as good a discussion partner as possible to other researchers who also work with runaway electrons. From April 1, however, I will return to Sweden, but this time to Stockholm and KTH in the role of Assistant Professor in fusion plasma physics. My research will likely continue on roughly the same track as before, but now I also get the chance to take greater responsibility for students in the role of teacher and supervisor. Because if there is something that really brightened my time as a doctoral student, it has been the interaction with all the fantastic bachelor's and master's students that I had the privilege of supervising!"

Three questions for ... Christopher Linderälv, about his winning doctoral thesis.
"My thesis is about material physics on an atomic scale, where I have carried out theoretical studies on electrons, atoms and their interaction. I have studied a variety of materials but what has been a common denominator is how to modify these materials to obtain desired properties. One of the main tracks in my research has been how defects, i.e. irregularities in a crystal, affect the optical properties of different materials. Some defects have applications in, among other things, quantum technology. While some defects are well researched, the vast majority are not and here I think my research has been able to clear up some question marks."
"The most difficult thing for me in writing the thesis was to put together a coherent story from so many years of research. It wasn't until the last few years that I started to see how it all came together. I put a lot of effort into the introduction to clarify the question and to explain how the parts of the thesis hold together."
"I am now at the University of Oslo, where I am researching similar things as during my doctoral studies at Chalmers, but with slightly different approaches and methods."

About the Best Thesis Award
- The Best Thesis Award was founded in 2013, as one among several initiatives at the Department of Physics, to maintain and improve the research quality, as well as to show appreciation for the PhD students' hard work. The management of the department also hopes that this award can help doctoral students receive an extra boost in their careers after the defence. These particular theses can serve as good examples for doctoral students in the early stages of their own thesis writing. Besides the honour, the award consists of a diploma and a monetary prize of SEK 10.000.

The best PhD thesis and dissertations in history
Get ready for a thrilling ride as we explore the world of PhD theses and dissertations!
We’ll uncover the secrets behind assessing these masterpieces, check out some of the most famous theses that changed history, and share some juicy insider tips on how to create an amazing PhD thesis.
So, buckle up and let’s dive into the captivating universe of academic research that has shaped the way we see the world!
What criteria are used to assess a PhD thesis?
As a PhD researcher who has been involved in the academic world, I’ve witnessed firsthand the criteria used to assess the best PhD theses. Here, I’ll share insider details on how examiners determine which dissertations are deserving of awards and recognition.
One of the primary factors in assessing a PhD thesis is the originality and significance of the research. For example, the 2023 dissertation award, the winning thesis was in the field of astrophysics.
The candidate, under the supervision of a renowned faculty member, developed a groundbreaking framework for understanding astronomical phenomena. This kind of novel research often catches the attention of examiners, who are looking for theses that have the potential to make a significant impact in their respective fields.
Quality of writing is another crucial aspect when assessing a PhD thesis.
A well-received thesis is typically clear, concise, and well-organized. In my time covering theses in history and mathematics, I’ve noticed that the best dissertations have a coherent narrative that makes their content accessible to both specialists and non-experts. This is true for theoretical works like John Nash’s foundational research in game theory, as well as applied research like the work of physicist Richard Feynman.
The defence of the thesis plays a significant role in the evaluation process.
I’ve witnessed how candidates successfully address questions from a panel of examiners, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject matter and its implications.
A thesis’s potential for publication or real-world application is often considered.
Some of the most memorable theses I’ve encountered, like Albert Einstein’s work on Brownian motion or Claude Shannon’s development of information theory, have had far-reaching implications for their respective fields and beyond.
Criteria used to assess a PhD thesis include originality and significance, quality of writing, defence performance, and potential for publication or real-world application. These factors together contribute to identifying the best PhD theses that stand out among the rest.

How to write the best PhD thesis possible
As a PhD candidate who has gone through the ups and downs of crafting the perfect thesis, I’ve learned a thing or two about making it the best it can be.
I’m here to share with you some insider tips and juicy details that I’ve discovered on my journey to create an award-winning PhD thesis.
Key takeaways
- Develop a clear understanding of the literature in your field.
- Ensure the logic in your thesis is flawless.
- Discuss your work with colleagues for feedback and insights.
- Focus on clear writing and organization in your thesis.
- Use formatting tools like bullet points and breakout boxes to highlight key points.
- Proofread your work and consider using tools like Grammarly or hiring a professional proofreader.
- Pay attention to first impressions and follow university printing guidelines for a professional-looking document.
- Keep in mind the importance of small details for winning prizes or earning recognition.
First and foremost, it’s essential to have a clear and concise understanding of the literature in your field. This sets the stage for your dissertation, allowing you to identify gaps and new ideas that your research will address. One critical component is ensuring that the logic in your thesis is flawless. I’ve found that discussing your work with colleagues both inside and outside your field can help you identify any leaps of faith or logical gaps that need to be addressed.
Now, let’s talk about the presentation. I cannot stress enough the importance of clear writing and organization in a PhD thesis.
In my own work, I’ve used formatting tools like bullet points and breakout boxes to highlight key points and make the text easier to follow.
This not only helped me communicate my ideas effectively but also impressed the examiners who reviewed my work.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the importance of proofreading and avoiding grammatical errors.
In my experience, using tools like Grammarly or even hiring a professional proofreader can elevate your dissertation to new heights. These seemingly small details can make all the difference when it comes to winning a prize or earning recognition for your work.
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of first impressions. When I submitted my thesis in 2021, I made sure it met my university’s printing guidelines, resulting in a substantial and professional-looking document. This attention to detail can set the stage for a successful PhD thesis that leaves a lasting impact on the world of science.
