Turning 18 years old is a stepping-stone toward adulthood — legally, socially, politically and economically.

For those who are about to become of legal age, I am sure you’re anxious to do so and excited about everything 18-year-olds do. Some of you, perhaps, may even feel so old that you think you have everything figured out because, well, you’re 18, right? Wrong.

This is the just beginning of a beautiful road ahead. While you begin to navigate your next life steps, just know that you will face a number of different experiences. Here are some things you need to know:

1. Do not accept anything less than what you need.

Find out what really makes you happy and learn to not settle for anything less. Put yourself first before the interests of others. If you try to please everyone except for yourself, you will head toward disappointment, especially when it comes to dating.

2. Create a list of things you want to achieve and work on making it happen.

Many of us dream but reserve pursuing said dreams for the future. Dream big and find out ways to make them reality. Each time you fulfill something on your list for life, cross it off and add a new goal. This will keep you going and help you to grow.

3. Don’t be afraid of failing; be afraid of not trying.

You’re bound to fail. Reaching goals is never easy because it is not meant to be. Keep working on your goals and learn from your failures. Do not give up.

4. Listen to your parents and spend time with them.

Yes, adulthood means freedom from your parents, but they won’t be around forever, so don’t take them for granted. Learn to appreciate everything they’ve done for you. Listen to them because they have experienced so much more life than you have.

5. Don’t be consumed with technology all the time. Unplug.

The world is becoming so intertwined with technology that we are forgetting the value of human connection. Enjoy earth, enjoy relationships and live without depending on your phone, iPod or laptop. You will be much happier this way.

6. Popularity means nothing.

Try to get to know people who are different and similar to you and appreciate the diversity of this world. Learn to respect others and embrace equality. Being popular means nothing in adulthood. It will not get you anywhere and it certainly does not mean you are “winning” in life.

7. Make memories.

Live your life and create memories that will last a lifetime. People will come in and out of your life. Make the most of it and live in the moment because the past is the past and the future is ahead.

I know you may think you know this already, but you have so much in your life that you have yet to experience. Just remember not to take a single moment for granted; keep your eyes open and embrace everything that life can offer you.

The next 18 years of your life will be even greater than your first 18. Trust me.

Didn’t think I’d be saying this, but for the first time ever, I’m ready to welcome adulthood.

So it’s my 23rd Birthday

Just like that, another year has come along and I find myself pushed further and further from adolescence. At 23 years old, I’m still pretty young as far as things go. However, it’s starting to feel like I can no longer cling to the comforting “basically still a teen” rhetoric that I’ve been treasuring since I stepped into my twenties. It’s time to face the facts; I’ve entered adulthood. But it’s okay. Because this year, I actually think I’m ready.

Age really can just be a number

Going to Uni, I quickly learnt that the link between age, maturity and adulthood is far more tenuous than people make out. As a 19 year old Fresher, I had 20 year old friends that had taken gap years, friends much older that had decided on Uni later in their lives, and friends almost an entire year younger than me (September birthday problems). But none of it mattered. And nobody felt older or younger. In our little Uni bubble, we were all the exact same age, because we were all undergoing this same life experience together.

In my opinion, being a “student” is it’s own stage of life age-wise anyway. You’re in this odd, liminal stage of your life where you’re past being a teenager, but you don’t yet feel adulthood. Yes, you’re most likely cooking for yourself and living alone and doing your own washing, but you’re also usually struggling for money, still relying on your parents for things, and getting an education. Every year I grew through Uni, it never felt like I was being an adult. I felt like a student: an overgrown teen with more responsibilities and agency.

Even after graduating last year, I didn’t feel like I graduated into adulthood. I took a year out , I was exploring my options, and I was living what was essentially an extension of my Uni life. Everything’s been fun and I’ve met amazing people and I was doing a lot of growing, but it  still didn’t feel like I’d reached an age where I felt “adult”.  And honestly, it really didn’t matter, because I had started to believe it was just a fake feeling that didn’t actually exist.

Then I felt it.

Lockdown, as I’ve mentioned before, ended up being a really transformative period for me . I changed my life’s direction, worked on myself both mentally and physically, and cleared a lot of things up inside my head. It was gradual and it took a lot of effort; I didn’t just wake up one day and have my life together. However, I do feel like I just woke up one day and decided I was ready to commit to adulthood. At least, that’s what it’s felt like.

I feel older, a little more mature, and I have a lot of thoughts and make a lot of choices that are far more “adult” than ones I would have in the past. It hasn’t been super drastic, and honestly at a surface level I’m pretty much the same as I was before. But It’s the first time I’ve been able to look at myself and what I’m doing and think “If I were in this exact same space and frame of mind 10 or 20 years from now, it would still feel right.” And I think I’ve realised that that’s what adulthood means to me.

So I’m welcoming adulthood.

Honestly, the thought of having to grow up and be an adult used to terrify me. But I’m ready now. I’m ready for the growth and I’m ready for this new chapter of my life.

In all honesty, it probably won’t look or feel all that different to anyone but me. But something in my mind has switched, and my outlook is ever so slightly tinted with a different lense than it was before. Bring on 23. And bring on adulthood.

Joys and Responsibilities of Being Eighteen

Celebrating 18th birthday is fun but also a bit tough. It is a stage of life when we have to cope with many changes in our life. The most important thing about being eighteen is the responsibilities that come with it.

We are given a little more freedom yet, we are considered young. Our mind starts forming opinions, which we are not considered old enough to express and it is confusing for us. We start our journey towards adulthood and encounter some new experiences. In these years of our life, we discover ourselves as new opportunities, come our way. We are given new duties and responsibilities. We have lesser responsibilities as compared to our elders, but we are definitely responsible for our actions. This can sometimes work to our disadvantage. In this phase of our life we are always willing to try out new things and in some of these we may falter. Many girls and boys get addicted to drugs and alcohol at this age either because they are influenced or due to peer pressure. At such times, the responsible thing to do would be to say ‘no’ to any kind of pressure.

One of the joys of being eighteen years old is that we acquire driving license and hence drive. This gives us a sense of independence. Young adults often engage in drinking and driving which lead to accidents and loss of life. Someone who considers oneself an adult at the age of eighteen mustn’t act so irresponsibly. Another major joy is the fact that we can vote at eighteen. However many eighteen year olds choose not to cast their votes because they aren’t happy with the government or feel too obligated. Being responsible citizens of the country, the youth must feel accountable towards choosing leaders.

There is definitely a pressure even while we have loads of fun. We can rationalise every crazy thing we do by stating the fact that we are still teenagers. So, being eighteen is, at times, stressful. But it is an existing stage of one’s life. It is not a bed of roses and neither a bed of thorns. Therefore, one must enjoy this short yet eventful phase of one’s life.

  When they say age is just a number, it is quite evident that they don’t refer to ’18’. The shift from childhood to adulthood at this age is not just a number, as it brings along with it the joy of independence and the responsibility. With the voter identity card and a driving licence and own bank account and the legal privilege of ‘adult films’, the movement into the adult world is challenging.

An eighteenth birthday is a magical milestone with its own joy of being independent and free to do things as an adult. These joys are always accompanied with serious legal implications. At eighteen, when we can vote and choose who will govern us, we can also go to jail and face a trial as a ‘major’ if we break the law. As I turn 18, I realize that this change is not only from childhood to adulthood. This change is also in perception and expectations that family, teachers, friends have from us. The transformation into adulthood can bring fear to the family as they are worried about the kind of exposure this newly gained independence may bring in us. Their fear is valid to a great extent as this is a very sensitive time for any child. Along with the fear of what comes along the expectations that parents have from their ‘adult child’. Though an adult, an eighteen years old child is still subject to influence from the peers. There are instances where people do take the wrong path due to peer pressure.

Being an adult can be a wonderful experience with its joys of enjoying legal rights and privileges hilt along with enjoying our rights we must also respect our responsibilities towards the family, society and the nation because being an adult is not about age. It is about a certain level of mental maturity which helps us identify ourselves as responsible, global citizens.

An argumentative essay expresses an extended argument for a particular thesis statement . The author takes a clearly defined stance on their subject and builds up an evidence-based case for it.

When do you write an argumentative essay, approaches to argumentative essays, introducing your argument, the body: developing your argument, concluding your argument, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about argumentative essays.

You might be assigned an argumentative essay as a writing exercise in high school or in a composition class. The prompt will often ask you to argue for one of two positions, and may include terms like “argue” or “argument.” It will frequently take the form of a question.

The prompt may also be more open-ended in terms of the possible arguments you could make.

Argumentative writing at college level

At university, the vast majority of essays or papers you write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments about texts.

In this context, you won’t necessarily be told to write an argumentative essay—but making an evidence-based argument is an essential goal of most academic writing, and this should be your default approach unless you’re told otherwise.

Examples of argumentative essay prompts

At a university level, all the prompts below imply an argumentative essay as the appropriate response.

Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on the topic. The essay then argues for that position and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence, evaluation and analysis.

• Don’t just list all the effects you can think of.
• Do develop a focused argument about the overall effect and why it matters, backed up by evidence from sources.
• Don’t just provide a selection of data on the measures’ effectiveness.
• Do build up your own argument about which kinds of measures have been most or least effective, and why.
• Don’t just analyze a random selection of doppelgänger characters.
• Do form an argument about specific texts, comparing and contrasting how they express their thematic concerns through doppelgänger characters.

An argumentative essay should be objective in its approach; your arguments should rely on logic and evidence, not on exaggeration or appeals to emotion.

There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian model.

Toulmin arguments

The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as necessary for the argument:

• Make a claim
• Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
• Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
• Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and showing that you have considered alternative perspectives

The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You don’t have to use these specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.

Say you’re making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination measures. You might:

• Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources would be better spent on other approaches
• Cite data to support your claim
• Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
• Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these objections are valid, and if not, why not.

Rogerian arguments

The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:

• Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
• Highlight the problems with this position
• Present your own position , showing how it addresses these problems
• Suggest a possible compromise —what elements of your position would proponents of the opposing position benefit from adopting?

This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.

Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:

• Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia
• Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
• Suggest that Wikipedia’s system of citations can actually teach students about referencing
• Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who are skeptical of its usefulness.

You don’t necessarily have to pick one of these models—you may even use elements of both in different parts of your essay—but it’s worth considering them if you struggle to structure your arguments.

Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an introduction , a body , and a conclusion .

Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction . The introduction serves to capture the reader’s interest, provide background information, present your thesis statement , and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here you’ll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis statement is true.

In the standard five-paragraph format for short essays, the body takes up three of your five paragraphs. In longer essays, it will be more paragraphs, and might be divided into sections with headings.

Each paragraph covers its own topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Each of these topics must contribute to your overall argument; don’t include irrelevant information.

This example paragraph takes a Rogerian approach: It first acknowledges the merits of the opposing position and then highlights problems with that position.

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. This essay analyzes Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 . The sonnet is a captivating love story of a young man fascinated by the beauty of his mistress and affectionately comparing her to nature. The first stanza, ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ opens the poem with an indication of a young man deeply in love (Shakespeare 1). He envisions her as a beautiful creature and even wonders whether one can compare her beauty to any summer season.

This love sonnet falls under the lyric genre, with the author expressing deep emotional feelings for his mistress throughout the poem. The first stanza gives an assumption to the reader that the poet is not sure of what is more beautiful, a beautiful summer day or his mistress.

However, the air is cleared in the preceding stanzas that see the poet overcome by flamboyant feelings and admits that his lover is even lovelier than the summer itself (Shakespeare 2). The poem embeds an image of an undying and eternal kind of beauty as visualized by the poet.

The poet adopts a thematic structure technique to express his lover’s beauty. A line-by-line analysis of Sonnet 18 shows that the first stanza acts as an eye-opener of the poet’s attempt to compare his lover with summer. He goes on to state why his lover is better. Stanzas 1-6 give a solid reason as to why one cannot compare his lover to summer. Though summer appears to be beautiful, it is not constant and can be very disappointing if solely relied upon. It also does not last as long as his lover’s beauty would.

The stanzas give detailed answers to his rhetorical question posed at the beginning of the poem. The poet’s praises and awe are well expressed in these stanzas by revealing all the beautiful qualities seized by his mistress. Her beauty is constant and can neither be shaken by strong winds nor can it become unpredictable like the hot sun. It doesn’t waiver in the eyes of the beholder like the clouds swallow the summer hence losing its beauty.

Stanzas 7-14 indicates everlasting beauty, which he says cannot be claimed by anything, not even a natural calamity such as death. In the conclusion of the Sonnet 18 , W. Shakespeare admits that ‘Every fair from fair sometime decline,’ he makes his mistress’s beauty an exception by claiming that her youthful nature will never fade (Shakespeare 7). Interestingly, the author takes a different twist in the ending when he no longer compares the beauty to the summer but rather to the immortality of his poems (Shakespeare 14).

The poem features an affectionate mood portrayed by the poet throughout the poem. The tone of the Sonnet 18 is that of the romantic intimacy of a young man intrigued by a woman’s beauty. The mood and the tone, therefore, play a significant role in describing the setting of the poem.

The poet is sitting in a field on a warm summer day (Shakespeare 1). Though the weather seems ideal, it is breezy, with rough winds’ shaking the buds of May’ (Shakespeare 3). That is an indication that the poet is sitting under a tree enjoying the scenery on a hot afternoon. The poet enjoys the unpredictable weather till the clouds swallow the sun, and as he states, ‘By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’ d,’ nature always seems to take its course during sunset and sunrise (Shakespeare 8).

The poet uses metaphor and personification to bring life to the Sonnet 18 . For example, he uses figurative speech to presume change, fate, and immortality. He speaks of how he will internally save his lover’s beauty from fading from the face of the earth (Shakespeare 12). ‘Summer’ as a literary device is used to mean the life of the mistress that should be safe from fate. Fate, in this case, is portrayed by the use of scorching sun and rough winds.

The imagery of the Sonnet 18 includes personified death and rough winds. The poet has even gone further to label the buds as ‘darling’ (Shakespeare 3). Death serves as a supervisor of ‘its shade,’ which is a metaphor for ‘after life’ (Shakespeare 11). All these actions are related to human beings. ‘Eternal lines to lines though growest’ (Shakespeare 12) is a praise of the poet’s poems which he says will last forever so long as ‘men can breathe or eyes can see,’ a metaphor symbolizing ‘poet lovers’ will be there to read them (Shakespeare 13).

He views beauty as an art that cannot diminish despite all the hurdles in life. However, beauty does not apply to everything but only to images that appeal more to the eyes of the beholder than nature itself. That kind of beauty is immortal and surpasses all tribulations caused by nature itself.

This essay on the Sonnet 18 by Shakespeare analyzed the poem’s tone, imagery, meaning, and main themes. In summary, the poet is fascinated by his mistress’s beauty, such that he cannot imagine that very beauty fading from his eyes. He argues that beauty is constant and, unlike a ‘summer day,’ is not affected by any changes or fate at all. He, however, seems to be praising his poem as characterized at the end of the poem, where he only compares the everlasting beauty to his text. The Sonnet eighteen’s conclusion indicates that beauty can only end only when the poem ceases to exist.

I’m 48 and my husband is 29. That won’t stop us from having a baby

Philanthropist and entrepreneur Caroline Stanbury currently stars on Bravo's reality series “ The Real Housewives of Dubai .” Stanbury also hosts the podcast “ Uncut & Uncensored , ” has a wellness brand, “ Bust The Label , ” and is building a real estate venture in Bali called “ Samsara Nest . ” She is married to Real Madrid soccer star Sergio Carrallo and has spoken about their plans to have a child together on the reality show. In a personal essay for TODAY, she shares more about their desire to grow their family, and why they are considering surrogacy.

Having a biological child with my husband, Sergio, was something I always knew would come up between us, honestly.

Sergio doesn't have any children. He's 29 and I just turned 48. From the moment we got involved, I realized that he'd probably want his own family.

I have three children from my first marriage: one 18-year-old girl, Yasmine, and two 14-year-old boys, Zack and Aaron. Sergio is very, very good as a stepfather. It’s a lot of work to blend into an already grown-up family. Of course, the kids love him.

Everyone kept asking if we were having a baby after our wedding two years ago. They're rooting for a Sergio-and-Caroline baby. I think they just want to see me waddling around or watch how first-time dad Sergio copes with sleepless nights. But it’s a lot of pressure to have the whole world know our reproductive issues.

Maybe I never should have mentioned it in front of the cameras. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.

We've already done two rounds of in vitro fertilization . Even though we got 15 eggs the first round and another 15 or 20 the second round, we only ended up with one viable embryo.

So we have a little baby boy on ice, waiting for us.

Knowing that there's one embryo is exciting, but it's also worrisome for Sergio. He's thinking he'd like to do another round of IVF in January next year and try for another embryo or two.

I suggested using someone else's eggs if we don't get another embryo with mine — which is a great option that works for many people — but that isn't something Sergio would consider. He wants our baby to biologically belong to both of us.

Unfortunately I probably can't carry another child myself. I had preeclampsia with all my children, and I got very sick with the twins. My children are against me carrying a baby because of the health risks for me. But right now, I'm undecided. My doctor thinks that I may be able to carry one more child, however, and I also feel the healthiest I've ever been. So never say never.

In the meantime, we're looking for a surrogate .

I never thought I’d be in a position where I’m reading how to find another woman to carry my baby, and I'm trying to figure out what that would look like. What if she wants to live in another country? What if Sergio wants to rub her belly? There are a million questions that don’t have answers to right now.

Surrogacy was illegal here in Dubai until just a few months ago. After surrogacy was legalized, I called the IVF clinic and they gave me two names of surrogacy agencies. I'm due to have a consultation, which I put off until after summer.

Moving forward with having another baby is a difficult decision at my age. It’s definitely something we go back and forth about a lot.

Sometimes, we think about the fact that we’ve already got three children. I’m older. I’ve already raised kids. We’ve got a life where we travel a lot and we work a lot. We have a really nice lifestyle. My children have grown up, and they’re leaving home.

Having a baby now would mean that while Yasmine is going to university, I’m about to go and look at nappies again. 

But I think that Sergio will be a great dad, and he deserves to be a father. And it could be fun! Maybe I'm better prepared to go back into the trenches now. I know exactly what to expect, so I won't be so overwhelmed by it all.

When you have a baby at a younger age, you're in shock because everyone's telling you what you can and can't do with your own child, and you're scared. But now that I've had three kids, I know that babies are resilient. It's not as hard as people like to make out.

Having three children under the age of 5 was quite hard, but I think having just one might be a walk in the park for me.

I've got more patience now than I had when I was a younger mom. I was running a much bigger company then and was dealing with more pressures at the time. Now, I've softened. So maybe when I have Sergio's baby, I'll be all gaga over it. A baby may turn me into a completely different human.

In talking to women on my podcast, " Uncut & Uncensored ," I've realized that the one thing Sergio and I have given everybody is hope. I'm showing women that they can go on and start a whole new life — perhaps literally — at 48.

At the same time, I know that it's tough for a lot of couples who want to have children and can't. I think the most important thing is that your partner supports you wholeheartedly. You can have a wonderful relationship with children or without, and it makes such a difference when you have a partner who reassures you that they will be by your side no matter what.

And Sergio has done just that. Which, ironically, is one of the many reasons I know he would be a great dad.

Trump's potential VP picks just received vetting documents. Here's who got the papers.

Former President Donald Trump's search for a vice president is formally underway, and there's been an increased focus on four candidates, although his shortlist is not yet complete, and the vetting process is continuing.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum , South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance have received vetting materials and are the candidates most frequently discussed internally by Trump and his campaign, a source familiar with the process said, but added that the former president may still choose another candidate.  NBC News  first reported a winnowing of the field.

A source close to one contender downplayed the report, and a senior Trump official said of any narrowing of the shortlist, "Anyone who tells you they know who, how or when is a liar unless it's Donald J. Trump."

These four candidates have received vetting documents, including financial background inquiries, as part of the Trump campaign's search process, Republican sources familiar with the vetting said, but others have also received the comprehensive vetting materials: New York Rep. Elise Stefanik , Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton . However, the list may still grow, and others may also receive the vetting forms.

Burgum is especially well-liked and respected by the Trump campaign. It is not lost on Trump allies and his campaign that the North Dakota governor is the potential running mate who has traveled the most with Trump on the campaign trail. Burgum and his wife have traveled regularly on the former president's campaign plane. He and Vance are also the only two of the four most frequently discussed contenders who also went to Manhattan to attend and support Trump during the "hush money" trial, where he was convicted of falsifying business records related to a payment to buy the silence of adult film star Stormy Daniels.

McDonald’s says $18 Big Mac meal was an ‘exception’ and news reports overstated its price increases

McDonald’s is fighting back against viral tweets and media reports that it says have exaggerated its price increases .

In a post on the company’s website Wednesday, McDonald’s U.S. President Joe Erlinger said reports suggesting the price of the average Big Mac has doubled since 2019 were false. McDonald’s said the average U.S. Big Mac was $4.39 in 2019 and now costs $5.29, a 20.5% increase.

“For a brand that proudly serves nearly 90% of the U.S. population every year, we feel a responsibility to make sure the real facts are available,” Erlinger said.

Erlinger acknowledged that he and many franchisees were frustrated by a post on X last summer about a Big Mac meal in Connecticut that cost $18, calling the price “an exception.” He noted that franchisees own and operate 95% of U.S. McDonald’s locations and set their own pricing but “work hard to minimize the impact of price increases.”

The average U.S. price of a Big Mac meal, which includes a sandwich, fries and a drink, currently is $9.29.

Still, the Chicago burger giant said the cost of some items have seen bigger price jumps than the Big Mac. The average price of medium fries was $2.29 in 2019 and is $3.29 now, a 44% increase.

McDonald’s said the average price of all menu items has risen 40% over the last five years, to account for a 40% average increase in the cost of labor, paper and food. That is higher than overall consumer prices, which have increased 21% since December 2019, according to government figures.

McDonald’s saw a marked slowdown in store traffic in the first three months of this year as inflation-weary customers in the U.S. and other big markets ate out less often. As a result, the company promised more deals.

Next month, McDonald’s is expected to introduce a $5 meal deal across the U.S. that will include a sandwich, a four-piece McNugget, small fries and a small drink.

Erlinger said he hopes customers will find the company’s upcoming deals “meaningful.”

“It’s clear that we — together with our franchisees — must remain laser-focused on value and affordability,” Erlinger said.

I Supervised New York City Judges. Juan Merchan Put On a Master Class in the Trump Trial.

I spent almost 13 years as a judge in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. I supervised judges presiding over a wide spectrum of cases, dealing with complex legal issues, angry victims, difficult defendants and intense media scrutiny. The job can at times be thankless and frustrating.

But for all the cases I saw, I never encountered anything remotely as challenging as what Justice Juan Merchan faced in his Manhattan courtroom while presiding over the first criminal trial of a former president. And since Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 counts, Justice Merchan has come under further vicious attack.

As a retiree, I was able to attend each day of the Trump trial. What I saw was a master class in what a judge should be — how one can serve fairly and impartially for the prosecution and the defense, and above all remain a pillar for the rule of law in America.

Since the indictment over the cover-up of hush-money payments was issued last year, Justice Merchan has been subjected to an unrelenting pressure campaign. The defendant, Mr. Trump, and his supporters viciously attacked the judge and his family in deeply personal terms. Most judges strive to maintain their composure under the greatest of stress, but few succeed — yet Justice Merchan remained cool, calm and collected at every step of the trial.

As a supervising judge, I always emphasized the importance of maintaining control to those under my charge. That is how a judge ensures that all defendants — especially the most difficult ones — get a fair trial. That is how everyone is treated with courtesy and how rulings are evenhanded and fair. In this area, Justice Merchan excelled.

He issued a gag order carefully designed to protect witnesses, jurors, prosecutors and court staff, but left himself out of the order. He did this to ensure that the defendant’s right to harshly criticize the proceedings was protected even though he must have known that he would become an even greater target of Mr. Trump’s ire. When Mr. Trump repeatedly violated the order, Justice Merchan bent over backward to avoid sending the defendant to jail, despite a clear legal justification to do so.
