The way in which public spaces have been interpreted throughout history is a way of cognitive process that has much to do with the human phenomenology of a place and the design paradigms through architectural phases. Although modern design is contemporized in a broad existentialism of varying styles, the modes of constructing are intuitively based on modalities of civic art that are cognitively present in the minds of every architect with some artistic, historical and cultural awareness of civic art public open urban spaces, forming the basis of environmental compositions of aesthetic beauty, in the sense of habitable experience. This thesis is a demonstration of the problem of defining civic art in relation to public open urban spaces of contemporary times, in relation to those of modernism, along with the presentation of syntactic demonstrations of contemporary solutions, in order to offer tools and actions for the architectural qualitative habitation of the public urban environment.

A city’s public space has undergone significant changes during the twentieth century. Those changes have affected both form and social function. Public space has suffered crises and revivals, but despite all its changes, it currently still plays a significant role for citizens. Mediterranean culture remains a valid tradition of public consciousness, which is evident in the urban space itself. The balance between aesthetic dimension ?material form? and social dimension ?use and meaning? is desirable in order to create an awareness of urban heritage and citizenship feeling. This article analyzes the main recent crises both aesthetic and social in public space in the western city. From this dual analysis, it discusses the main findings about perception of urban public space in current Mediterranean culture. In conclusion, the aesthetic and social dimensions of public space are not independent but interdependent by the confluence of several factors.

rphology studies cannot consider urban form without taking into account buildings and open spaces. These two elements are closely connected to physical support and pre-existing environmental dynamics. Therefore we see no sense in breaking them in any studies related to the urban form. This article begins to look at the city and its forms under a rarely used way. The open space becomes the protagonist of the analysis. This approach considers both publicly and privately owned spaces. It evaluate the role of different types of retreats that shape backyards, enclosed yards, parking lots, parks and plazas, etc.. and through which passes part of everyday city life. Despite the natural connection links with others societies in the world like: similar neighborhoods and architectural forms, global urban habits, Brazilian cities hold a peculiar form coming from the specific process of parceling land, urban legislation, cultural habits and formal and informal actions that resulted as the contemporaneous Brazilian urban landscape. After five years of study, carried out by a national network of researchers, coordinated by LAB-QUAPA[1] – at the São Paulo University, it was possible to build a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, opportunities and constraints of the Brazilian cities open space systems. The presentation discusses the relationship between the open space systems and the urban form, checking the points in common: their process of constitution, the existing social and environmental conflicts, and their morphological structure and appropriation types of open spaces.

The rapid development of the big European cities in the XXth century and the change of the traditional city into a metropolis ga ve birth not only to an extraordinary dynamic artistic culture but also to a culture of i nterpreting, dedicated to the study and explanation of these urban phenomena and their soci al effects. The aim of this paper is to build a bridge between various practices of contemp orary art as they can be found in public art (to be more specific: site-specific art, as we ill see) and a series of disciplines dealing with the studying of urban space: urban sociology, human geography and the anthropology of the everyday, all inspired by critical theories of culture and society. From this point on, we will be able to meditate upon public art’s role in the urban public space.

Paper presented to the 2013 Berlin international symposium The Role of open spaces in the transformation of urban landscape hold by The Italian Institute of Culture. In it I summarize after the review of different urban landscapes that there is a need to recover traditional urban layouts in order to create a comfortable city and sustainable landscape, at least in concrete zones. As in all the processes I reviewed, the key still lies in open public spaces. Herein, there is a need for design, for guidelines of urban design containing appropriate rules of town planning and renewal, urbanisation and maintenance of open spaces

Urban Art: Creating the Urban with Art

New approaches to urban architecture, city planning, and community building that are triggering and evoking alternative and interdisciplinary forms of public engagement, encompassing both creators and recipients, makers, and the last twenty years. At least, that is true for among those creatives, who occupy themselves professionally with the phenomenon of global metropoles and megacities, i.e. architects and planners, artists, and theoreticians. With this the ideological and aesthetic debates of the sixties, seventies, and eighties any longer, but the current actor-network idea. osa, new urban art, urban imagination, public intervention, participatory installation, artistic lab, community building, social design, scenography, network idea Over the recent years, the manifold urban interventions and various temporary installations in urban space by 1 can be seen as a new form of collaborative architectural research, cooperative design experiment, and participatory creation of user-oriented, highly inclusive art which is easily accessible to a wide audience in the public sphere. Public art hereby is utilized as a kind of artistic-architectural laboratory for creating the urban anew with alternative, or rather subversive, forms of ephemeral architecture, temporary interventions, and as well as urgencies of our time beyond "decorative cosmetics" might then open and suggest a new path to greater public engagement and civic co-creation, for example by artistically enhancing the functions and roles of public space in cities or by establishing social interaction and active participation, shared (emotional) experiences, and mutual encounters. The creative reinterpretation and aesthetic transformation of public space by artistic imagination might facilitate the sustainable regeneration of the urban in the end, and even more, discuss the idea of ownership of urban space anew. However, it is not considered a substitute for politics though.

Designing directive urban design is essential that guides once path of exploration and revelation of different spaces of art and architecture. Thus it emphasizes upon the necessity of urban axis that is abstract in nature, yet carves a variety of sensory experiences along its path thereby providing a variety and an opportunity of being a part of these spaces. To understand this, the essay highlights the importance of the public realm and the practice of good urban design through literature and case studies and later applying the studied knowledge onto the chosen site to test the practical workability within the chosen context.

The paper evaluates the vision of the proposal for the city of Basel in Switzerland and delves into the concept of 'shared space' the designers explored in this project. Focusing on the reinvention of the public spaces in the historical and geographical settings of Basel, it will further analyze the vision in the context of urbanism theories and practices prevalent at that time. The paper offers an appraisal of unique historical, geographical and morphological background of the site and the role it plays in shaping vibrant public spaces that facilitates an integrated cityscape. The first part of the paper brings to light the unique characteristics of this vision for Basel city centre. Secondly, Basel city life is analyzed to realize the need the designers felt for this project. The third section is an attempt to understand the fundamental aspects of this proposal. In doing so, the paper attempts to understand the way designers approached this vision. Finally the paper concludes with a reflection on how the proposal relates to the prevailing theories of urbanism and how it challenges certain preconceived notions.

This thesis challenges the way we design and inhabit urban public space. This architectural thesis project envisions a new public space. A framework for expression: a place where people physically create the spaces around them through architectural manipulation and expression of ideas, art and performance. The framework is inspired by translating the principles of garment design into architectural strategies: joinery, materiality, structure, response, and adjustability. As the architecture changes, so do the programs and ways of expressing. The site of this exploration is on the coast of Maine, in the city of Portland; acting as a gateway into the city from the ocean, as well as a connector, bridging the Downtown and East End districts. The concept is explored by creating architecture for an urban public space through architectural strategies that respond to the people, site, and city that promotes expression, gathering, and becomes a physical connection to the city. By implementing a framework for expression in a urban public setting, people will be able to communicate through architecture by changing the physical spaces that surround them. Individual expression spurs the connection of people. The connection of people spurs the connection of a city. And, ultimately a city with meaningful connections, both physical and otherwise, will develop a more socially engaged society.

Architecture graduate student's thesis on urban public spaces receives award.
May 23, 2023
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Aysan Jafarzadeh, who graduated from Penn State on May 7 with her master of architecture degree from the College of Arts and Architecture's Stuckeman School , was named the 2023 winner of the Department of Architecture 's Jawaid Haider Award for Design Excellence in Graduate Studies for her thesis that explores the concept of art in urban public spaces as a means to promote creativity, individuality, inclusivity and freedom among city residents and visitors.
Titled “Boston's Botanic Bay: A Visionary Towards a Creative Paradigm of Public Spaces,” Jafarzadeh's thesis is a visionary project for the Public Garden that “redefines the concept of public spaces, blending the beauty of nature with innovative design elements that challenge traditional boundaries.”
The site of her project was originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the famous landscape architect who is revered for co-designing many well-known urban parks, including Central Park in New York, but was never executed. Jafarzadeh drew from Olmsted's ideas while introducing new concepts and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in public space design.
“One of the key principles of the project is the freedom of movement and activity,” said Jafarzadeh. “The design includes meandering paths, open lawns and interactive play areas that encourage people to explore, engage and interact with the environment. The design also features spaces for community gatherings, performances and exhibitions, fostering a sense of community and social connection.”
Jarfazadeh, who is originally from Tehran, Iran, said she was inspired by living and working in Boston last summer while interning with Bergmeyer. There, she had the opportunity to meet students and graduates from various schools, including Harvard and MIT.
“Even though they were not working in design, they expressed a desire for art and design to be a part of their lives,” she said. “This made me realize that there should be public spaces that enable people to express their creativity, regardless of their academic or professional background.”
Jafarzadeh said her design is not intended to be a standalone project, but rather “a continuation of Olmsted's legacy in creating public spaces that promote physical and mental well-being, community engagement and environmental sustainability. It serves as a model for other cities around the world, showcasing the potential of blending tradition and innovation in public space design.”
Also known as the Boston Public Garden, the Public Garden was the first public botanical garden in America. DK Osseo-Asare , assistant professor of architecture and the master of architecture thesis instructor, commended Jafarzadeh for completing a historic project with contemporary relevance.
“Aysan used a compelling approach to address a project with significant historic importance and offered a thorough, developed and mature arrangement of spaces,” said Osseo-Asare. “Her project was a complex, well-executed demonstration of mature self-direction.”
Elliott Brau earned an honorable mention for his capstone project titled, “Isla Mundo,” which explores the climate crisis by presenting an architectural prototype that uses renewable materials, low impact design and resilient form.
This year's Haider award jury was comprised of Landon Brown, founding principal of Onland Architecture and a visiting assistant professor at the Pratt Institute; Ashley Heeren, a registered architect in the state of Texas with a focus on public-spirited projects that prioritize sustainable place-making and celebrate local ecologies; and Dan Spiegel, founding partner of Spiegel Aihara Workshop, an architecture, landscape and urban design firm based in California, and a lecturer in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.
The Haider award recognizes the most deserving master of architecture student for excellence in design, based on their culminating project/thesis. The award recipient is chosen by the head of the Department of Architecture upon recommendation by the faculty and the jury.
Now in its fourth year, the Haider Award for Design Excellence was established in honor of the late Jawaid Haider, a long-time architecture professor at Penn State who died in 2018, with support from his family, friends and colleagues.
Jafarzadeh said winning the Haider award is a validation of the effort, time and dedication that was put into the work, and it serves as a “confirmation of the quality of the work done.”
“It gives me hope that I am walking in the right path, especially having earned the confirmation of such an accomplished and successful jury that were deciding the winner,” she said.

![20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture architecture thesis on public space](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-related-to-Community-Architecture.jpg?w=999)
Academic research is a wonderful opportunity that allows students to expand their creativity in resolving grounded practical issues faced by the industry. The architectural thesis produced by students in their final year is a thrilling journey of an explorer seeking solutions into the vast expanse of case studies , reviews, journals and documentations. While the thesis marks the joy of having the finish line in view, choosing a topic can be a confusing and harrowing phase. This article can be a step up for those who have an eye on public architecture and community designing. It is true that the subject must be highly individual and something you are passionate about, but here are 20 topics related to community architecture to spur your brain to creative action!
1. Community recuperation in the face of a global pandemic | Community Architecture
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet2](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-01.-Federal-Street-in-Auckland.jpg?w=999)
While the COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed a plethora of life changes, the use of public spaces and communal areas are the hot topics of concern and discussion. The way we live, move and behave as a community is to be reset. As architects and designers, the spaces we design can shape and influence the community’s behaviour and attitudes towards a healthier and safer society. What would be some shifts that we as designers should make in this regard?
2. The identity of temporal public spaces in an instantaneous society
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet3](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-02.-Installation-at-Arizona.jpg?w=999)
As technology overtakes the contemporary world, we live in a world of instant messaging, online shopping and fast food. Everything is available at a click and the constant ‘feed’ of information and visuals train the mind to require constant change in scene and settings to be able to garner interest. How would public spaces cater to this constant ‘need’ of a changing landscape? What identity would temporal public spaces popping up in unexpected places hold in this instantaneous generation?
3. The role of community gardens in urban neighbourhoods | Community Architecture
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet4](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-03.Community-Garden.jpg?w=999)
While research increasingly indicates the need for the human-nature connection for healthy societies, the practical issues of over-population and urbanisation have resulted in tight urban neighbourhoods suffocating from lack of any form of natural/green spaces. Further aggravation is caused by the modern lifestyle that highly reduces neighbourly interactions making cities dead and lifeless. It is the role and responsibility of the designers to find creative ways to sustain these vital relationships. Could community gardens address this twin issue faced in increasingly urban neighbourhoods?
4. Creating resilient communities in the face of natural disasters
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet5](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-04.-Urban-recovery-post-Christchurch-Earthquakes.jpg?w=999)
Natural disasters, while identifiable to an extent, are usually unexpected and leave behind unforeseen impacts and damages to not just infrastructure but also to communities. Therefore, it is highly significant in natural disaster management scenarios to not just address the rebuilding of a broken community but also measures to empower the communities to withstand and sustain any future disasters. Could past lessons help in creating a resilient future?
5. Resurfacing the persona of public architecture through placemaking | Community Architecture
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet6](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-05.-Lunar-New-Year-in-Vietnam.jpg?w=999)
While public architecture universally seeks to cultivate public interaction, the lack of an individualistic personality leads to a stale and stagnant space – a mindless repetition with no vitality. A downside of modern architecture is the ‘created labels’ for public architecture where every mall has an atrium and every city has a botanic garden . What makes these spaces distinct and enjoyably sustaining in the long run would be the unique character and connection they hold to the cultural context. Could we revive the persona of public architecture through the art of placemaking?
6. Redefining the public realm with modern technology
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet7](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-06.-Light-Projections-at-Christmas-in-Melbourne.jpg?w=999)
As modern technology permeates our life from daily routines to work to play, it is inevitable that the public realm which is the heartbeat of life in cities should incorporate these ‘tech components’. From using lights and projections to music and artificial intelligence , artists, engineers and designers have joined hands to create fabulous installations. What would the tech-public realm look like in the future?
7. Uplifting public spaces with universal access principles
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet8](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-07.-Significance-of-universal-access-in-public-places.jpg?w=999)
Thanks to modern inventions , differently abled people can live and move independently. It is therefore imperative that public places are inclusive and easily accessible for such people. While newly created spaces are designed with their needs in mind, do we need to consider creative and practical upgrade measures to make existing public places universally accessible?
![](http://omraadeinfo.online/777/templates/cheerup1/res/banner1.gif)
8. Aligning design to the voices of the community | Community Architecture
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet9](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-08.-Community-engagement.jpg?w=999)
While architecture has always been the art of expressing oneself – primarily the designer, when it comes to community architecture, a shift is required to make the end user the primary expression. As the community is the ultimate benefactor of the space, the voices of the community become chief drivers of communal design . Could we explore effective methods to blend the voices of the community into the creative and technical flair of the designers to attain a successful outcome?
9. The role of design in the identity of a community
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet10](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-09.-Nurturing-a-forgotten-community-to-life.jpg?w=999)
In designing to the strengths of a community, the designer holds the key to influencing society positively. A successful design would not just tick the boxes but accentuate the identity of the community. While every community has multiple facets with diverse strengths, the challenge lies in identifying the unifying thread that would tug them together. How significant a role does design play in defining and empowering a community?
10. The role of the designer as an intermediate between people and the built environment | Community Architecture
![architecture thesis on public space 20 Thesis topics related to Community Architecture - Sheet11](https://i0.wp.com/www.re-thinkingthefuture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/A3115-20-Thesis-topics-Image-10.-A-Brimbank-Council-Park-reflecting-the-contextual-nature-reserve.jpg?w=999)
The behavioural psychology and diversity of people makes designing public spaces a grey area. The designer plays the role of an intermediary in reconciling the needs of the people with an appropriate built solution. It is just the tip of the iceberg that this matchmaker role requires competent assessment of needs on one side and potential on the other to meet these needs. What more does this role initiate?
Chrysolyte Gladys is an explorer who looks for the reason behind things, employing diligent architectural research to discover practical solutions for issues plaguing contemporary designers. She treasures the influential ability of designers in creating better living environments and highly appreciates the intertwining of natural and historical context with the built outcome.

THESIS: Urban Design and Development of a Public Space
Urban Design and Development of a Public Space at the City of Kitchener’s Intermodal Transit Hub
Abstract by Tahoora Alimohammadi
This thesis uses a case study approach at the proposed Transit Hub for the City of Kitchener to focus on opportunities for a high quality public space/square to better integrate a new LRT line and a new GO/VIA rail station into the surrounding city. The conceptual framework of this thesis is to create a public space at Kitchener transit hub in order to transform the space into a new interface where people can experience a fulfilling urban life. This design proposal seeks to create an intimate relationship between public life, infrastructure and people. In addition, this proposal envisions a series of diagrams of the Edward T. Hall’s Proxemics strategy, a non-contact communication, to experiment with the adequacy of all the defined spaces.
Within the city of Kitchener, much has already been done to establish the presence of urban design at the human scale, to integrate contemporary ideas into the design of buildings, and to enhance historic natural retreats like Victoria Park. However, little has been done to integrate the expanded opportunities for new design of work and living opportunities in the city center with the proposal of a new intermodal transit hub in the heart of that growing downtown core.
The combination of both of those aspects will look at how to create a healthy, people-oriented public environment that will also transfer people from one mode of transit to another. With the surrounding new mixed-use developments and the heritage architecture of Kitchener’s industrial past, the case study demonstrates the typical situation facing most urban centres undertaking transit expansion in Ontario.

The key to successfully designing or recovering public spaces is to achieve a series of ingredients that enhance their use as meeting places. Regardless of their scale, some important tips are designing for people's needs, the human scale, a mix of uses, multifunctionality and flexibility, comfort and safety, and integration to the urban fabric. Great public spaces are those places where celebrations are held, social and economic exchanges occur, friends run into each other, and cultures mix. They are the “front porches” of our public institutions – libraries, field houses, schools – where we interact with each other and government. When these spaces work well, they serve as the stage for our public lives, but what makes some places succeed while others fail?

When we talk about public space, we often imagine a park with happy, relaxed people on a sunny day. In actuality, this is a very restricted approach. In this edition of Editors’ Talk , editors from Los Angeles, São Paulo, Argentina, and Uruguay share their views on defining public spaces for everyone.

Underground Architecture: Connections Between Ground-Level Public Space and Below-Ground Buildings
The main objective of this research is to develop an underground space framework which establishes design solutions to underpin the successful design of underground buildings. The poorly conceived nature of contemporary underground space often means it has little, or no contribution to its above-ground environment, as it neglects the significant relationship between the ground plane, and above and belowground space. As a result of this omission towards its above-ground environment, urban design theory and practice have neglected the subject of underground space, where it is presented typically as ancillary spaces, of a highly fragmented nature. This problem is addressed through a literature review, establishing the treatment of underground space within urban design literature, a taxonomy analysis of the physical form of 90 contemporary underground buildings, and a discussion of the five archetypes of underground space. Developed from the findings of each of these research sections, an underground space framework is established. The framework is divided into six guideline categories with which each focusing on a major design issue relevant to underground space. The presentation of each guideline briefly states the issue, its objective, and then suggests various solutions for implementing the specific objective. The guidelines are intended to be flexible, where they are selected, developed and applied with regard to the underground buildings unique site and programme characteristics. The design case study, an extension of Wellingtons Museum of City and Sea located at Post Office Square, demonstrates how these guidelines can be used, through selecting, developing and then applying, suitable guidelines in response to its specific site and programme requirements. In total, the research suggests that the underground space framework can underpin the successful design of underground space through establishing strong physical connections between below ground and above ground public space. This can be achieved through blurring the boundaries between above and below -ground space, revealing historical underground elements above ground, and considering the underground as a viable option to resolving specific urban design issues present above ground.
