Dear Dr. Allison Longwood,

I’m writing to apply for the position of environmental and botanical researcher at the Frost Botanical Center. I’m grateful to be considered for this opportunity, as I have always admired the Frost Center’s contributions to the field of environmental science. I am the current resident curator and liaison at the Hoffen University arboretum and the founder of a sustainable agroforestry nonprofit initiative in the Caribbean with seven years of experience in the field of environmental research. With the skills I’ve developed through these experiences, I hope to continue my efforts toward advancing ecological progress and environmental education at the Frost Center.

Over the last three years, I have served in my role at the Hoffen University arboretum. In this role, I’ve had the privilege of leading a full-scale botanical center. I was afforded the opportunity to play a key role in the development of the center by curating, planting, maintaining and organizing the 1000+ plant species present on the property. Not only has this position helped me develop strategic research tools in successfully cultivating hybridized and rare plants, but it has provided me with an in-depth education in the studies of horticulture, botany, ecological sciences and environmental sustainability.

In 2016, prior to starting my role at the arboretum, I began an agricultural sustainability initiative in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica after the island experienced a destructive hurricane that wiped out their farming infrastructure. With my background studying specialty coffee and its cultivation processes, I partnered with local leaders in Jamaica to develop a nonprofit initiative centered on fostering a sustainable reforestation initiative. Throughout my research processes, leadership and the extensive field work my team has completed, we have rebuilt the farmers’ agricultural infrastructure and enabled an environmentally sustainable source of income for their families.

In both of these aforementioned roles, I was able to carefully refine my diverse foundation of skills in research, problem-solving, communication, team management and sustainability consultation. Each of these roles necessitated a high level of organization, meticulous attention to detail and independent time management. I feel that I would be a strong asset to the Frost Botanical Center due to my past experiences, which have taught me the requisite skills to succeed in a fast-paced research and scientific environment.

Thank you for your time and consideration of my application—please contact me if you need any additional information. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Dr. Christina Esquino”

As a highly innovative and results-driven Environmental Geologist and Project Geologist with a strong background in environmental consulting for major corporations, I am currently seeking to utilize my skills for your organization as Environmental Scientist.

With extensive experience conducting geologic data investigations, preparing subsurface investigation technical reports, corrective action plans, and site assessments, I feel confident in my ability to generate superior results for your organization. I am experienced in planning, phase scheduling, and project control. I have supervised field personnel and fieldwork including drilling, tank excavation, and soil/groundwater sampling.

Some of my key accomplishments include:

Served as Compliance Advisor for ConocoPhillips for gas station sites and bulk plants regarding environmental regulatory compliance, budgets, reports, maps, and data management in GeoTracker and LiveLink.

Championed projects including soil and groundwater sampling, well installation, soil vapor extraction, and air sparge well installation.

I can quickly adapt and achieve goals in any environment. For a more detailed presentation of my skills and background, please review the enclosed resume. “Dear Ms. Kristina Arredondo,

I am searching for a position in Environmental Science.

I have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Brown Mackie College and my courses included geology, biology, hazardous-waste management and chemistry. While completing my internship, I gained extensive fieldwork and some laboratory experience. My experience also includes using computer modeling and digital mapping to determine the extent of pollution in any given area and to predict how it will change in the future.

I have extensive knowledge of conservation, degradation and replenishment along with the ability to conduct studies, compile findings and to create documents recording all of the information collected. I have strong analytical and observational skills with the ability to determine the source of any problem detected and to determine how harmful it is to the environment. This way, it can be handled in a timely manner according to priority.

I possess excellent communication skills with the ability to present information in person through presentations or in writing detailing the results of all studies. I also have good interpersonal skills and a friendly personality that encourages teamwork, which helps to make the team more productive.

I am physically fit and able to do the fieldwork and I have the ability to travel with short notice and to work long hours to meet tight deadlines. I also have plans to continue my education to receive my master’s degree and it is my desire to help preserve and protect the earth’s air and water supplies by helping to develop new, effective ways to reduce pollution.

How to create a good cover letter for an environmental scientist: free tips and tricks

Writing a cover letter for resume is mandatory as it helps hiring specialists to sort through hundreds of applications and cherry-pick applicants who are able to follow instructions and demonstrate their fitness to the job. Here are six tips for you to navigate your way in the deep job-hunting sea. Read them up and you’ll know how to pen out a one of yours. For further information, refer to the environmental scientist cover letter example below to see how to format and lay out it.

Study the job posting. It has lots of useful information. For example, you’ll understand which qualifications and skills the prospective employer is looking for. By using the keywords from the job ad, you’ll underscore for the recruiter that you’re a perfect match.

Avoid being generic. It reduces your chances to land an interview and a job eventually. Better to craft a short text but pact with strength and engaging to the reader than to write a long cover letter full of clichés and overused words. Try to think of all your experience and condense it to a few paragraphs.

Keep your focus on the employer. It is crucial that you draft a cover letter thinking of the company’s needs. It will help you include specific examples of how the company will benefit from you.

Don’t overuse ‘I.’ Even by looking through your grammar constructions, you’ll stop focusing on self by eliminating excessive ‘I’ at the beginning of sentences. Otherwise you’ll go off as too self-centered.

Make sure to mention your top selling points. Do it in a more specific way. For example, if you want to say that your communication skills are great, say something to the effect, “I have had two years of public speaking experience.”

The time is now. Here’s how you write a job-winning environmental science resume:

1. Optimize Your Environmental Science Resume Format Choice

Environmental scientists operate within the natural environment to analyze samples and data sets to create prognoses and prevent damage to both human and wildlife habitats. Your environmental science resume needs to show you have the right expertise, but also the people skills required to collaborate with others.

Be it geology, atmospheric science, or hazardous material handling—you need a proper attack plan to minimize harm.

When writing a resume, you need just the same to maximize potential gain.

As mentioned, environmental science is on the rise, with a predicted growth of over 7 000 new positions in the field projected by 2030.

Get ahead of them with a resume that turns heads, and follow our resume writing basics:

  • Add your current contact information in your resume header .
  • Separate your resume sections with plenty of white space and distinct headings.
  • While there’s a variety of resume formats to choose from , as an environmental scientist you’re most likely to find the reverse-chronological format to be the best option for you. It highlights your most recent—and therefore probably biggest—achievements.
  • Your resume font choice matters a lot for the general aesthetics of your resume, so choose something clean and legible like Arial or Calibri and set it at size 11–12.
  • Set the resume document margins to 1 inch on each side.
  • Submit your resume as a PDF file , but keep a Word copy handy in case you need to make any adjustments.

Also, in case you’d want to know how many pages should a resume be in total—

One page is ideal, unless your work history is like an IPCC report in itself. Submit a two-page resume only if you can actually fill the second page with relevant information that’s likely to impress the reader.

2. Write an Environmental Science Resume Profile

All reputable research papers start with an abstract.

Resume-writing comes with an abstract of its own—the resume profile .

It’s a succinct way to describe yourself and your past results, but you have to do it right. Fill it with fluff and irrelevant experience , and that experiment will certainly flop.

So, to break it down to the elemental level, if your experience in environmental science goes back a couple of years, you’ll write a resume summary . Focus your lens on the biggest achievements of your career, and be sure to include numbers. Without them, your research results look dubious at best.

And if your lab coat still looks brand new, writing a resume objective is the way to go. Center the recruiter’s attention on your existing knowledge, transferable skills , and ways you could use both to bring success to the company or organization you’re applying for.

3. Refine the Work Experience on Your Environmental Science Resume

Environmental science as a field is so vast, it’s not really possible to lump it all into one basket and provide 100% interchangeable advice.

All subsets in the industry need a great work experience section , no matter your background and specialization.

Get it synthesized successfully by following this advice:

  • Start by putting down your most recently held position. Go back in time with previous positions. This, as previously established, is the reverse-chronological order.
  • Every single entry should come equipped with your job title , company name, dates of employment, and up to 6 effective resume bullet points . Positions from way back when should only get 3 bullets.
  • Start each bullet point with an action word for maximum potency.
  • Don’t discuss the mundane minutiae of your day-to-day. For best results, describe your major work achievements , complete with numbers that help put them into context.

Lastly, have you noticed how “Resume” looks a bit like an anagram of “Reuse me”? While recycling is very environmentally friendly and all, sending generic resumes will surely earn you the ire of every recruiter. It’s always better to target your resume !

4. Purify the Education Section of Your Environmental Science Resume

No doubt the education you obtained will be of interest to the people potentially going to hire you. Ensuring your resume education section is crafted well should be your top priority.

What you put in here depends on how long you’ve been in the professional industry. If that number is >5 years, go ahead and list just the basics. School name, location, highest degree, and graduation year.

With less experience, you’ll want to elaborate. For entry-level environmental science resumes, add more elements, like:

  • Relevant coursework on a resume helps to show exactly how your education will be useful in the job
  • Your GPA on a resume can be a great asset if you achieved at least 3.5 (on a 4-point scale)
  • School club memberships and other extracurricular activities on a resume can work as proof of your soft skills (e.g. teamwork or presentation skills).
  • Academic achievements like scholarships and honors on your diploma— cum laude on a resume , for example, will prove you’re a fast learner and an exceptionally talented scientist.

Pro Tip: If you’re writing an entry level environmental science resume, it might be a good idea to change up the order and put the education section first, ahead of your work experience.

When making a resume in our builder, drag & drop bullet points, skills, and auto-fill the boring stuff. Spell check? Check . Start building a professional resume template here for free .

5. Show You Have the Right Environmental Science Skills

By far the worst thing you can do to hurt your chances is to pollute your resume with a poorly-written skills section.

And yet, swaths of candidates trip over their own feet here. Their intentions may be good, buuuut…

Let’s get this straight:

If your skills section currently has 15 skills, with half of them being a stretch, and 2–3 being outright lies—

You’re doing it wrong. Very wrong.

There are alternative solutions. Try this approach:

  • Arrange all of the skills you (actually) have in a master spreadsheet. You can even categorize them into soft skills and hard skills , as well as  technical skills  and any other, uncategorized abilities if you so desire.
  • The job posting you’re interested in will have relevant information, so pull that up real quick.
  • Using the two, search for matches between your list and the skills that fit the company’s ideal candidate profile. Those are your most effective resume keywords to use.

And just like that, you have a tailored skills section. You’ve trimmed some of the fat, it looks sleeker, and it passes ruthless Applicant Tracking System checks . Just remember that it’s not entirely evergreen: you’ll need to tailor it to the company requirements every time you apply for a different job.

6. Include Extra Sections on Your Environmental Scientist Resume

One of the key factors that separate you from the rest of the crowd is… you.

It’s always preferential, in the employer’s eyes, to hire someone with enthusiasm for the position, rather than a person who has no color, no fire, no passion.

That’s where extra resume sections come in. And even that’s not all! Reports show that beginning with minor things, such as volunteering experience , or completing courses and mentorships is an effective way to get into the environment industry.

So, let’s get to it:

Think about elements that you had to skip thus far. Whatever didn’t quite fit before, like language skills , volunteer work or freelance work , certifications and licenses , etc., can be inserted here. Hobbies on a resume can be a good idea, too, provided they’re somehow relevant to the job.

The point is: you want to show energy and conviction. This helps nail in the impression that you’re the right choice for the job.

7. Attach a Cover Letter to Your Environmental Science Resume

Done? Excellent—

Then there’s just one thing left to do: writing a great cover letter to match your new resume.

Though sometimes less is more, that’s not the case here. You simply need a cover letter if you want to maximize your chances of success.

Luckily, it’s easier than you think—just follow these cover letter tips :

  • Use the right cover letter format and a template that matches your resume.
  • Start your cover letter with a cleverly crafted statement to hook your readers in right off the bat.
  • Draw their attention to your achievements in the body of your cover letter. Show how your values and work ethic match those of the company or organization.
  • Finally, end the cover letter by using a powerful call to action and offering to help the company achieve a specific goal.

That’s it. No tricks, no overly complicated 4D strategies. Just a one-page-long cover letter to hand in and get that job.

Plus, a great cover letter that matches your resume will give you an advantage over other candidates. You can write it in our cover letter builder here.  Here's what it may look like:

A duo of professional job application documents that correspond, comprising a resume and cover letter, created with the Zety resume builder utilizing the Modern resume template that features a two-column layout and decorative rectangles in the header and footer areas.

Environmental Research Assistant Cover Letter (Full Text Version)

Ms. andrea kesay.

Development goes hand in hand with destruction, which can interfere with people, the environment or both. It is more destructive when it affects the community and the natural resources because for there to be sustainability, the three environment pillar, social pillar and economic pillar should be in balance. Conflict arises when people fight for limited resources, which can come about through development, and this can be solved through laws and policies.

I decided to do masters in Environment Governance after I read the book by Laureate Wangari Maathai, The challenge for Africa and realized the big role played by the environment, which unfortunately, is taken for granted . I realized that change started with me, and if I wanted a better future for the next generation, and to see Africa rise from its burden of gender inequality, poverty and disease, I needed to stand up and do something. Doing this masters course empowered me, and as Laureate Wangari Maathai said, you cannot enslave a mind that knows.

From there, I went to do internship at Integrated Global Environment Strategies in Japan, which is a policy research institute. I got a chance to be on a research team for UNEP green economy report for Burkina Faso where I gained research skills. I also contributed to the Japan 2050 low carbon navigator whose main aim is to reduce Japan 1990 carbon emission levels to twenty five percent or less. While in the process, I got an interest in green economy and green jobs concept which seeks to value the human life. Also, I learnt how communities and informal settlements are marginalized with regards to security of tenure when I joined Pamoja Trust. I joined the team that was working towards creating voice and space for the urban poor.

I am applying for position of community environmental legal officer in the Coastal region because I want to bridge the gap between law and policy formulation and implementation in the environment sector with regards to the marginalized communities. The constitution of Kenya talks about the environment protection and this is enforced in detail in the Environment, Management and Coordination act of Kenya. I would like to be part of the team that finds remedies for the communities to be able to live in harmony with the environment so that we can eliminate future conflict. I believe right governance and good policies, which are implemented well, are one of the key ingredients for sustainability. My goal is to ensure policies are implement.

application letter for environmental science

What is an environmental science personal statement?

Writing a personal statement for environmental science is a chance to sell yourself to the admissions tutors and show them why you would make a great candidate.

It’s a place to describe your skills and strengths, as well as your career plans.

You are allowed up to 4000 characters to explain why you are applying for an environmental science degree, so you need to make sure your statement is as polished as possible to stand out from the crowd.

How do I write a successful environmental science personal statement?

Good environment science personal statements always use evidence to support their claims. You need to convince admissions tutors that you’re a good match for the course, so if you claim to be committed or inquisitive, then use examples from your life to back it up.

To write a great environmenal science personal statement you need to start early, brainstorm some ideas, and then begin your first draft during the summer holidays.

This will then need to be carefully revised and edited before asking family and friends for feedback. Incorporate their comments and suggestions, and see how it is improved before asking them to look at it again.

Read through our environmental science personal statement examples above to get an idea of what a good statement looks like.

Make sure you proofread your statement for grammar and spelling before sending it off, and if you feel you need a little extra help, take a look at our personal statement editing services .

What should I include in my environmental science personal statement?

Many students choose to start their statement by picking a specific aspect of environmental science and explaining why they enjoy it, e.g. ecology, conservation, earth structure, hydrology, etc.

Admissions tutors want candidates that are as passionate about the subject as they are.

As well as your motivations for studying environmental science, think about your hobbies and extracurricular activities too. What skills have you learned from these and how will these help you in your environmental science degree?

Talk about any work experience placements you have completed, e.g. shadowing an environmental worker or research technician. What did you take away from this experience? Do you feel you have all the necessary personal traits and qualities that make a good environmental science student?

Your wider reading is also important, so it's worth mentioning anything you've read recently that you found interesting and why. Generally, admissions tutors like students who express their views and opinions, and can back them up with evidence.

Application Letter to Master's Program in Environmental Science in Germany

application letter for environmental science

OP karto002 1 / 1   Apr 28, 2020   #3 @Holt Thank you very much for catching that and for the feedback :) It is a motivational letter written according to the DAAD guidelines and is currently less than one-page long. The DAAD guidelines specify that I need to explain why I choose Germany and specifically the program, why I think I am the right person for this program, what is my professional goal and how I intend to contribute to the society once I return, and how the program would help me to achieve that. Do you know by any chance what the ideal length would be, maybe give an example of which information could be omitted/replaced, and share some pointers on how to strengthen the letter? Noted, I will include the essay type and writing instructions in future posts. Thanks a lot! :)
