Cailee Spaeny Comes Face to Face With a Xenomorph in New 'Alien: Romulus' Image

Every tom holland spider-man villain, ranked, the 25 best gangster movie stars, ranked.

Hot on the heels of winning the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for director Tom Hooper's The King's Speech .  Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Jennifer Ehle and Guy Pearce, the film tells the true story of King George VI and how he overcame a lifelong stammer to rule the United Kingdom.

I saw the film at TIFF and absolutely loved it.  It's definitely getting nominated for every award at this year's Oscars and it's probably going to win most of them.  You can also count on Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter to all get nominations and I can already see Firth winning.  He's that good.  Anyway, while the trailer is decent, the film is exceptional. The King's Speech gets released November 26, 2010.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer:

The King’s Speech tells the story of King George VI.  After his brother abdicates, George ‘Bertie’ VI (Colin Firth) reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded nervous stammer and considered unfit to be King, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush).

The King's Speech

After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of Prince Edward VII's (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle. Based on the true story of King George VI, The King's Speech follows the Royal Monarch's quest to find his voice. The multi-award-winning cast includes Helena Bonham Carter (Alice In Wonderland) as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Guy Pearce (The Hurt Locker), Derek Jacobi (The Golden Compass), Timothy Spall (The Damned United) and Michael Gambon (Harry Potter).

a king's speech trailer

Now streaming on:

"The King's Speech" tells the story of a man compelled to speak to the world with a stammer. It must be painful enough for one who stammers to speak to another person. To face a radio microphone and know the British Empire is listening must be terrifying. At the time of the speech mentioned in this title, a quarter of the Earth's population was in the Empire, and of course much of North America, Europe, Africa and Asia would be listening — and with particular attention, Germany.

The king was George VI. The year was 1939. Britain was entering into war with Germany. His listeners required firmness, clarity and resolve, not stammers punctuated with tortured silences. This was a man who never wanted to be king. After the death of his father, the throne was to pass to his brother Edward. But Edward renounced the throne "in order to marry the woman I love," and the duty fell to Prince Albert, who had struggled with his speech from an early age.

In "The King's Speech," director Tom Hooper opens on Albert ( Colin Firth ), attempting to open the British Empire Exhibition in 1925. Before a crowded arena and a radio audience, he seizes up in agony in efforts to make the words come out right. His father, George V ( Michael Gambon ), has always considered "Bertie" superior to Edward ( Guy Pearce ), but mourns the introduction of radio and newsreels, which require a monarch to be seen and heard on public occasions.

At that 1925 speech, we see Bertie's wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), her face filled with sympathy. As it becomes clear that Edward's obsession with Wallis Simpson (Eve Best) is incurable, she realizes her Bertie may face more public humiliation. He sees various speech therapists, one of whom tries the old marbles-in-the-mouth routine first recommended by Demosthenes. Nothing works, and then she seeks out a failed Australian actor named Lionel Logue ( Geoffrey Rush ), who has set up a speech therapy practice.

Logue doesn't realize at first who is consulting him. And one of the subjects of the film is Logue's attitude toward royalty, which I suspect is not untypical of Australians; he suggests to Albert that they get on a first-name basis. Albert has been raised within the bell jar of the monarchy and objects to such treatment, not because he has an elevated opinion of himself but because, well, it just isn't done. But Logue realizes that if he is to become the king's therapist, he must first become his friend.

If the British monarchy is good for nothing else, it's superb at producing the subjects of films. "The King's Speech," rich in period detail and meticulous class distinctions, largely sidesteps the story that loomed over this whole period, Edward's startling decision to give up the crown to marry a woman who was already divorced three times. Indeed, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (as they became) would occupy an inexplicable volume of attention for years, considering they had no significance after the Duke's abdication. The unsavory thing is that Wallis Simpson considered herself worthy of such a sacrifice from the man she allegedly loved. This film finds a more interesting story about better people; Americans, who aren't always expert on British royalty, may not necessarily realize that Albert and wife Elizabeth were the parents of Queen Elizabeth II. God knows what Edward might have fathered.

Director Tom Hooper makes an interesting decision with his sets and visuals. The movie is largely shot in interiors, and most of those spaces are long and narrow. That's unusual in historical dramas, which emphasize sweep and majesty and so on. Here we have long corridors, a deep and narrow master control room for the BBC, rooms that seem peculiarly oblong. I suspect he may be evoking the narrow, constricting walls of Albert's throat as he struggles to get words out.

The film largely involves the actors Colin Firth, formal and decent, and Geoffrey Rush, large and expansive, in psychological struggle. Helena Bonham Carter, who can be merciless (as in the "Harry Potter" films), is here filled with mercy, tact and love for her husband; this is the woman who became the much-loved Queen Mother of our lifetimes, dying in 2002 at 101. As the men have a struggle of wills, she tries to smooth things (and raise her girls Elizabeth and Margaret). And in the wider sphere, Hitler takes power, war comes closer, Mrs. Simpson wreaks havoc, and the dreaded day approaches when Bertie, as George VI, will have to speak to the world and declare war.

Hooper's handling of that fraught scene is masterful. Firth internalizes his tension and keeps the required stiff upper lip, but his staff and household are terrified on his behalf as he marches toward a microphone as if it is a guillotine. It is the one scene in the film that must work, and it does, and its emotional impact is surprisingly strong. At the end, what we have here is a superior historical drama and a powerful personal one. And two opposites who remain friends for the rest of their lives.

Note: The R rating refers to Logue's use of vulgarity. It is utterly inexplicable. This is an excellent film for teenagers.

King Charles Mentions Hello Kitty and Pokémon in Japanese State Banquet Speech

The King and Emperor both gave speeches before guests dined in the Buckingham Palace ballroom.

“It has been a pleasure to learn of the British stories behind certain Japanese cultural icons,” the King said in a speech ahead of the banquet in the Palace ballroom. “Perhaps you would allow me to note one particular individual who turns fifty this year, raised in a London suburb with her twin sister, a self-made entrepreneur worth billions of dollars, and a U.N.I.C.E.F Children’s Ambassador on top of all that. So I can only wish a very happy birthday to…Hello Kitty!”

Later in his speech, the King also spoke of “the Pokémon phrase gotta catch ‘em all,” saying that he did not have such luck with his recent attempts at fishing. In more serious parts of his address, the King described the partnership between Japan and the UK as having “deep roots.” “Our partnership is also one that continues to grow and flourish, to put out new shoots and branches,” he said. Charles opened and closed his speech with a word or two in Japanese.

Emperor Naruhito also delivered a speech in which he spoke frankly of “the sad period during which the friendly relationship between our two countries suffered,” before later describing the relationship as “accelerating in various areas.” “Our bilateral relations have never been more robust,” he said.

Among the approximately 150 guests at the banquet were members of the royal family and the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Also there was the leader of the Labour party, Keri Starmer, who is currently campaigning for his party to be in power after the July 4 general election. Andrew Lloyd Webber was also seated at the horseshoe table along with YouTuber Chris Broad, a Brit who posts under the name Abroad in Japan. Also dining was chef Miho Sato, who grew up in Japan and is now head sushi chef at London’s top Japanese restaurant The Aubrey.

Guests dined on a starter of poached Scottish langoustines on a nest of Cucumber with Basil Mousse, chilled Tomato consommé. This was followed by baked fillet of Cornish turbot, with herb butter wrapped in lettuce and sorrel cream sauce. There was also a selection of summer vegetables, creamed potato and spinach croquette, a salad of green beans and quail eggs. Dessert was an ice cream bomb with peach Sorbet insert, on a bed of compressed peaches.

The State Banquet table was decorated with floral displays including roses from the Buckingham Palace gardens and Windsor Castle as well as acer trees, known as Japanese maple.

salem's lot 2004

Salem’s Lot Starring Rob Lowe Is the Bite 2004 Forgot

By Stephen Wilds

Stephen King wrote Salem’s Lot in 1975 and the novel was turned into a satisfying miniseries four years later, but that CBS adaptation had to cut and change several elements to create the two-night television epic. Now, we’re due a new retelling of this story, with an HBO version of the vampire tale that was supposed to be released in 2022, now slated for later this year . However, most have forgotten about the entry that came in 2004, TNT’s attempt to update the timeline and change the focus, in what might be an underrated take on Salem’s Lot.

“Whoever feeds you…is your god.”

Writing the adaptation this time was Peter Filardi (The Craft, Flatliners), who helped take the story of Ben Mears ( Rob Lowe ) – a writer returning home to confront his past traumas, only to find it infested with vampires – and shines the spotlight on the darkness in small towns, secrets, and how horrible people can be even without an evil influence looming over them. The audience is told not to romanticize small-town life, not to think that just because people often say nothing happens there that there’s nothing important occurring behind closed doors, sometimes it is just buried deeper. Focusing on the details, on the lives and downward spirals of people is very King-esque, and we see everyone’s faults, their mistakes, and guilt, these are believable characters and there are hints of even worse actions that might have been explored had vampires not decided to wreak havoc. I love the idea that someone like Larry Crockett (Robert Grubb) is worse as a normal human than a supernatural ghoul, because at least we understand why vampires do what they do, it’s just in their nature to kill and feed.

The 1979 version of Salem’s Lot is technically more impressive and, though dated, provides a bit more horror, but the 2004 remake arguably understands and elaborates on the characters better. This version also takes some of the classic moments from the original without copying them too directly while attempting to bring their own frights in as well. Not everything works as intended, but certain moments, like the altercation in the jail cell, help try to pull viewers in and ramp up the brutality (especially toward children) while still keeping it somewhat suitable for network television. With these restrictions, the miniseries still almost manages to capture that gleeful sense of dread a story like this provides and attempts to show several neat powers and circumstances as it plays with King’s tweaks to the vampire lore.

I love the character depth, which helps boost the overall story, but I had to watch it twice to fully catch some of the finer points. This special starts with an interesting framework of our main character attacking someone and ending up in a hospital, given the opportunity to tell his horrible tale to an enthralled doctor. Having them fall on the cop car out of the window was a solid bit of sudden action before slowing things down and showing how everything started. We get some fun narration segments from Mears, but the beginning has a ton of exposition that goes by rather quickly, as well as some hints at a few key deaths, and it is easy to miss some of the information, though most of it comes back up later. The dialog is sometimes clever and a little cheesy, but foremost, this doctor should never rap again.

Some of the characters put things together rather quickly, but we need people to buy into this whole vampire thing to get the action rolling. The second installment may feel like it’s better because there’s more action going on, but I think this is best experienced as a whole film, assuming viewers don’t mind the three-hour and one-minute runtime. I also love how some of the smaller plots matter, even after characters know they’re dealing with the supernatural, because they’re expecting to live through all of this and deal with the repercussions. However, I absolutely love that no one is safe. Some of these characters absolutely deserved what they get, and I have to appreciate that the Sheriff just said ‘screw it’ and left town when he realized what they were up against.

Although I think some parts are overdone stylistically, like Ben’s flashbacks or the jump-scare from the toast (is it paranoia if the vampires truly are out to get you?), several of the deaths work to not only feel meaningful and illicit sadness but also look kind of sick. The staking feels savage, and I love it when a vampire (or his minion, in this case) stakes one of the mortal hunters to give them a taste of their own medicine. Guess we should just start biting vampires back.

When the undead are pierced through the heart they sometimes go upward, like their soul is trying to escape or their bodies want to flee in one last futile attempt. The effects don’t look great, but considering the time and TV budget, I’m not hating on them too much. I feel like the crew tried to do something different, and at least it felt creative, if not a bit too sparkly, during a certain ashing. The movement of the supernatural creatures was serviceable on the ground, while the flying was certainly not the best wirework I’ve ever seen. Audiences saw some excellent backgrounds, using over 300 extras and far-off shots (they filmed Australia as Maine for some reason), but I question a couple of these transitions.

The music in Salem’s Lot is also a bit of the time this was made, a slightly out-of-place early ‘00s flavor capped off perfectly with a cover of Paint It Black performed by Gob. Some of the score works here, creepy music to help amplify certain scenes when it isn’t bordering on being too much, like the parts where the ghostly choir sounds like human theremins.

“You guys hear about the hippie vampire? He’s ghoul man, real ghoul.”

One thing this version of the story wasn’t lacking was notable actors. Helping to back Lowe up were names like Samantha Mathis, James Cromwell, and the incredible Andre Braugher, whom I always loved in Homicide: Life on the Streets, but most people know him now for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. People like to point out how he gets shunted off to a hospital bed for most of this story, but he has a few amazing scenes too. For the bad guys, we have the recently departed and truly wonderful Donald Sutherland as Richard Straker, who manages to do some solid acting as well as ham it up in the same conversations, and I’m haunted by his tongue movements while imitating that goat mask. He plays servant to Rutger Hauer’s master vampire, Kurt Barlow, who apparently brings an evil odor wherever he goes.

This is an actor who also pulls a couple of excellent scenes out, but according to Rob Lowe’s book, Love Life , Hauer was somewhat difficult to work with and insisted on ad-libbing his big final speech, which turned out to be less-than-stellar. They had to negotiate with the actor to get him back on script, but Hauer didn’t know the pages. This meant that his lines had to be on cards for the master vampire to read, probably answering why that last exchange felt a bit awkward.

The 2004 iteration of Salem’s Lot isn’t perfect. It feels a bit stuck in the year it was made and hampered by being on TNT, but I think those who call it underrated have enough positive evidence to point out an argument. Sure, the ending is a bit abrupt and confusing, but avid readers will tell you several of King’s stories feel that way. Some people didn’t like this less-likable version of Ben Mears – they called him a typist – others didn’t think it was scary enough, and a few just couldn’t appreciate the ham-fisted references to The Stand and Cujo, but most agree that the Stand by Me song reference worked fine. That’s the perfect way to look at this version of Salem’s Lot–it’s fine. This imagining isn’t doing anything groundbreaking, but it tried something slightly different and might be worth checking out on Amazon or DVD until the new one flies into town.

King Charles Makes Rare Public Comment About His Grandchildren During State Banquet

K ing Charles III welcomed the Emperor and Empress of Japan , Naruhito and his wife Masako Owada, to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday for a three-day visit to celebrate the cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

“Your Majesties, my wife and I are so delighted to be able to welcome you to Buckingham Palace this evening,” the King told the Japanese royals at a state banquet on Tuesday. During his speech , he also made a rare reference to his grandchildren—seemingly referencing their appreciation for Japanese pop culture—while discussing his friendship with the Emperor and their previous experience fly fishing together.

"I am only sorry to report that I haven’t had any better luck with more recent attempts at fishing—the Pokémon phrase 'gotta catch ’em all' may resonate with my grandchildren, but for me it is, perhaps, aspirational,” the King said.

Charles has fivegrandchildren. His eldest son, Prince William, who is married to Kate Middleton, is dad to Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, Prince Louis, 6.. Meanwhile Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are parents to Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.

The King also expressed his deep desire for continued cultural exchange between the two island nations, which he said would enrich the creativity of both countries. After discussing how delighted he had been with Japanese influence on British arts and culture, naming films such as The Boy and the Heron and Spirited Away , which has been re-imagined as a stage show and is currently gaining strong reviews at the London Coliseum theater. Charles also made note of a famous Japanese icon that had British roots.

“Perhaps you would allow me to note one particular individual who turns 50 this year, raised in a London suburb with her twin sister, the self-made entrepreneur worth billions of dollars and a Unicef children’s ambassador on top of all that. So I can wish a very happy birthday to Hello Kitty,” he said humorously, leading to many chuckles from the audience.

Inside the UK's state banquet hosted by King Charles in honour of Japan's Emperor Naruhito

Emperor Naruhito and King Charles clink their glasses in front of a large bouquet of flowers

King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako for a banquet at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday night, local time.

The event closed off the first evening of a three-day state visit celebrating diplomatic ties between the UK and Japan.

"Our governments are working together to provide a stable world for future generations," King Charles said in a speech at the banquet.

"Supporting all these shared endeavours are the enduring ties between our people that transcend geography — and that does not just mean how much we enjoy tea and talking about the weather."

Charles and Camilla stand in a doorway with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako were due to make the visit in 2020 but their trip was delayed due to the pandemic.

The UK hosts state visits during the winter and early summer as a way of building relationships with other countries.

While Charles and Camilla are the official hosts, visiting leaders tend to have engagements with government ministers and other organisations while in the country.

A procession of royals walks down a hall inside Buckingham Palace.

In his speech, the Emperor paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth, who was monarch at the time of the initial invitation, and lauded the diplomatic ties between the nations.

"The multi-layered collaboration and exchange between our two countries is accelerating in various areas including politics and diplomacy, the economy, culture and the arts, science and technology, as well as education," he said.

"Our bilateral relations have never been more robust."

Emperor Naruhito last travelled to the UK in 2022 to attend Queen Elizabeth's funeral.

The Lion King Is Getting a Prequel 30 Years Later! Everything to Know About Mufasa: The Lion King

'Mufasa: The Lion King' explores the early life of Mufasa as he goes from orphaned cub to legendary king of the Pride Lands

a king's speech trailer

Walt Disney Studios' classic The Lion King was released 30 years ago on June 24, 1994. Three decades later, the much-anticipated release of Mufasa: The Lion King — an animated musical drama that is a prequel to the 2019 adaptation of the timeless classic — is mere months away.

Mufasa: The Lion King will take viewers through Mufasa's origin story, his friendships, relationships and pivotal events that led to his eventual reign as king of the Pride Lands.

From the esteemed director of Moonlight, Aftersun and If Beale Street Could Talk , Barry Jenkins and returning writer from the 2019 adaptation, Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa will bring forth new layers to the story while honoring the enduring legacy.

Among the ensemble cast of familiar faces are Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter , which Jenkins noted has added a dynamic element to a film rooted in family values .

“[Watching Beyoncé], both on the screen and behind the screen, get to be a mother — and how that affected and impacted for the better the work that we were all doing — was just really awesome," Jenkins told PEOPLE in April 2024.

From the release date to the rest of the cast, here’s everything to know about the musical drama Mufasa: The Lion King .

What is Mufasa: The Lion King about?

Mufasa explores the early life of Mufasa as he goes from an orphaned cub to his rise as one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands (and the history of animated cinema). The origin story will offer a deeper understanding of his character and the dynamics within the Pride Lands, including Mufasa’s relationship with his brother Taka, who later becomes the famed Lion King antagonist, Scar. The story is told through flashbacks narrated by Pride Lands shaman Rafiki to Kiara (daughter of Simba and Nala), with added witty commentary from Timon and Pumbaa.

"What you'll learn from the story is that Mufasa is who he is ... because of the family and the friends that he has,” Jenkins said at Disney's D23 Expo in 2022. “And so I saw myself in that. I thought: 'This is a really beautiful story to tell.' "

Who is in the cast of Mufasa: The Lion King ?

Francis Specker/CBS/Getty

The upcoming film has a star-studded cast, with many returning from the 2019 adaptation. Donald Glover , Seth Rogen , Billy Eichner , John Kani and Beyoncé will reprise their roles as Simba, Pumbaa, Timon, Rafiki and Nala, respectively. Joining them are new cast members such as Aaron Pierre as young Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as young Scar, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi and Blue Ivy making her feature film debut as Kiara.

The mother-daughter duo of Beyoncé and Blue Ivy brings a unique dynamic to the film, as the 12-year-old recently joined her mother as a backup dancer on Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour and was featured in her Grammy-winning “Brown Skin Girl” music video.

“I feel like Blue grew quite a bit over the course of that tour,” Jenkins told PEOPLE in April 2024. “The movie is kind of like this snapshot, this time capsule of a moment in their lives that I think is really beautiful. And it absolutely worked for the film .”

What will be on the soundtrack of Mufasa: The Lion King ?

Music has always been a crucial part of The Lion King franchise, and fans can expect original tracks by award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda , celebrated for his contributions to Broadway hits like Hamilton and other Disney animated features like Moana and Ecanto .

“ The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I'm humbled and proud to be a part of it,” Miranda said in a statement . “It's been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa's story to life, and we can't wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters."

When does Mufasa: The Lion King come out?

Mufasa is set to hit theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.

Is there a trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King ?

Walt Disney Studios released the first trailer for Mufasa on April 29. The trailer opens with narration from Rafiki as a lion cub gazes at his reflection in a raindrop, which the mandrill shaman introduces as Mufasa: “Born without a drop of nobility in his blood — a lion who would change our lives forever.” Set to the backdrop of Ledo M’s vocals in the original “Circle of Life,” the trailer features clips of giraffes, lions, elephants and a young Mufasa throughout the Pride Lands expanse — with some glimpses of a less savannahian landscape of snow and ice. While Rafiki’s narration is the only voice featured in the trailer, the clips hint at a myriad of action and adventure in the forthcoming film.
