Wow! I always have trouble deiciding what to do a research project on but this list has totally solved that. Now my only problem is choosing what idea on this list I should do first!
Most of these my teacher rejected because apparently ‘these aren’t grade level topics, and I doubt they interest you”
I’m sorry to hear that. Sounds like you will have a potentially valuable character-building experience in the short-term.

The Ultimate List of Interesting Research Topics for Kids
Inside: A list of interesting research topics for kids in elementary school or homeschool!
![7th grade research paper ideas](https://www.wifeteachermommy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2-1024x303.png)
Teaching research skills is so important in elementary school. We can help our students navigate the “how-tos” of research. Learning how to navigate text features in nonfiction books, finding credible sources online, and taking notes are all skills we’ve mastered and can pass on to our knowledge-thirsty students.
One of the tricky things is taking the time to come up with interesting research topics for kids and coordinating research units for each topic. Our students still need some scaffolding and guidance, and there are so many things they study in school. How can we possibly decide what topics they should research and have time to put together comprehensive units?
![7th grade research paper ideas My Black History Research Journal- the Ultimate List of Interesting Research Topics for Kids](https://www.wifeteachermommy.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/The-Ultimate-List-of-Research-Topics-for-Kids-2-683x1024.png)
I’ve got you covered with a list of engaging research topics for kids!
A ready-to-go research unit, that follows my 5-step research process , is also available for many of these topics for your convenience! These unit studies will allow you to expand on content taught in class or start fresh with science and social studies research units complete with everything from unit outlines, parent letters, and internet research lessons to help students find credible sources, projects, reports, journaling pages, and more.
Students will also build their research skills during the process, so these units are a great way to make time for science and social studies with an integrated curriculum since you will still teach the necessary language arts curriculum at the same time.
Learn how to skyrocket your students’ research skills by listening to this episode of Wife Teacher Mommy: The Podcast.
What are some good research topics for kids?
From the solar system to dinosaurs, scientists & inventors, and holidays around the world, below are good research topics for kids, possible research questions for kids to answer, and other interesting research topics for kids related to the topic.
The Solar System
It’s hard to meet a child that doesn’t have some interest in outer space. That’s why this is #1 on our list of research topics that kids will love. This Solar System Research Unit has students research a planet of choice (yours or theirs), create a model, and write a report. Research should be more than just taking notes and writing a report, and this unit really brings art into STEM!
Questions for your students to research the solar system:
- What are the names of the planets in our solar system?
- How big is our solar system?
- What does the solar system look like?
- Why does everything in our solar system revolve around the sun?
Other interesting research topics for kids related to the solar system:
- Research one planet in our solar system

Landforms are cool! They are one of the best physical science or geography topics for kids to research. I like to learn all about different landforms together and then assign your students one specific landform to research.
Your students will research and write a report/presentation about their specific landform and create a salt dough model. Everything is ready to go for you in our Landforms Research Unit!
Question for your students to research landforms:
- What is a landform?
- What landforms can be found where I live?
- How are landforms formed?

Animals and Habitats
Animals and habitats are one of my favorite research topics for kids! The unit starts with students being assigned a habitat to explore and an animal that resides in that habitat to study. Accompanying the report/presentation about their animal is a creation of a terrarium of their habitat and animal. Check out this picture of a terrarium that one of my 3rd-grade students made when I used my Animals and Habitats Research Unit!
Question for your students to research animals and habitats:
- What does my habitat look like?
- Where in the world can I find my habitat?
- What animals live in my habitat?
- What does my animal like to eat?
- How does my animal fit in the food chain?

Kids love penguins, so why not use them as your next research topic? Your students may not know that there are various types of penguins. After learning about the types of penguins, they’ll have one of their own to study. On butcher paper, they’ll create a life-size penguin to share and integrate math and science measurement standards. This Penguin Research Unit shows us why penguins are such a fun research topic for kids!
Question for your students to research about penguins:
- What do penguins eat?
- Who are penguins’ predators?
- How do penguins communicate?

One of the hardest parts of writing a research paper can be just finding a good topic to write about. Fortunately we've done the hard work for you and have compiled a list of 113 interesting research paper topics. They've been organized into ten categories and cover a wide range of subjects so you can easily find the best topic for you.
In addition to the list of good research topics, we've included advice on what makes a good research paper topic and how you can use your topic to start writing a great paper.
What Makes a Good Research Paper Topic?
Not all research paper topics are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a great topic before you start writing. Below are the three most important factors to consider to make sure you choose the best research paper topics.
#1: It's Something You're Interested In
A paper is always easier to write if you're interested in the topic, and you'll be more motivated to do in-depth research and write a paper that really covers the entire subject. Even if a certain research paper topic is getting a lot of buzz right now or other people seem interested in writing about it, don't feel tempted to make it your topic unless you genuinely have some sort of interest in it as well.
#2: There's Enough Information to Write a Paper
Even if you come up with the absolute best research paper topic and you're so excited to write about it, you won't be able to produce a good paper if there isn't enough research about the topic. This can happen for very specific or specialized topics, as well as topics that are too new to have enough research done on them at the moment. Easy research paper topics will always be topics with enough information to write a full-length paper.
Trying to write a research paper on a topic that doesn't have much research on it is incredibly hard, so before you decide on a topic, do a bit of preliminary searching and make sure you'll have all the information you need to write your paper.
#3: It Fits Your Teacher's Guidelines
Don't get so carried away looking at lists of research paper topics that you forget any requirements or restrictions your teacher may have put on research topic ideas. If you're writing a research paper on a health-related topic, deciding to write about the impact of rap on the music scene probably won't be allowed, but there may be some sort of leeway. For example, if you're really interested in current events but your teacher wants you to write a research paper on a history topic, you may be able to choose a topic that fits both categories, like exploring the relationship between the US and North Korea. No matter what, always get your research paper topic approved by your teacher first before you begin writing.
113 Good Research Paper Topics

How to Write a Great Research Paper
Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.
#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early
Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!
As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."
If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."
#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research
Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.
#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing
You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!
Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.

Seventh-Grade Research Paper Topics

![7th grade research paper ideas Seventh-grade students learn how to locate reliable research material online.](https://classroom.synonym.com/public/images/logo-fallback.png)
Seventh-grade teachers often assign research papers to help their students learn to locate, analyze and document research material. Ask your students to select a research topic in a specific area, such as literature, science, history or technology, if you want to stress a particular subject. Or, allow them to choose a topic from your list of suggestions, such as "how to" or "pros/cons" papers. Research topics should tie into your seventh-grade curriculum so students gain a deeper, broader understanding of relevant subject matter.

1 Current Events
Ask your students to choose a current events topic so they learn how to conduct research in newspapers and on Internet news websites. Ensure they have access to reputable newspapers, magazines and online resources. Suggest local, national or international news stories that cover major events, political issues, crimes or pop culture.
Encourage your students to select debatable, highly informative or thought-provoking current events; daily weather reports and sports scores are too basic. The goal is to help them learn to distinguish fact from opinion and locate reputable information. Set a requirement that they must consult a specific number of resources, such as two newspapers and two online news websites.
2 "How-To" Themes
Opt for a "how-to" theme if you want your students to research key steps in a process, according to the Common Core State Standards Initiative. Tell your class that the topics must relate to social studies, science, history, literature, technology or business. You don't want students researching overly familiar topics, such as how to ride a bike or how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Suggest plausible topics -- how a bill becomes a law, how to open a savings account, how to take care of a chinchilla, how to become president of the United States, how to write a poem or how a magnet works. Encourage your students to choose a "how-to" topic that they currently know little or nothing about. They can research information in books, textbooks, encyclopedias, academic journals and on reputable websites.
3 "Pros and Cons" Papers
Encourage your students to select a research topic that covers both the pros and cons of a particular issue, according to the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. Seventh-graders must learn how to analyze both sides of an issue to avoid bias, evaluating a variety of resources to draw logical, well-supported conclusions. Suggest possible topics, such as the advantages and disadvantages associated with the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, positive and negative effects of the Crusades, benefits and drawbacks to having metal detectors in schools or the pros and cons of texting as a form of communication.
4 Social Issues
Instruct your seventh-graders to research social topics, such as violence in schools, drug or alcohol abuse, animal rights, homelessness, police brutality, illiteracy, teen suicide or eating disorders, recommends the Linden Public Schools in New Jersey. They must use statistical data, commentary from professionals in the field and research from medical or psychological journals to back their findings. Encourage them to address opposing views in their papers, providing reasons why those angles are wrong or misleading. Provide research materials, such as periodicals, books, EBSCO computer services and Internet access to help them locate viable information.

Engage students with interesting research topics, teach them skills to become adept independent researchers, and help them craft their end-of-unit research papers.
CommonLit 360 is a comprehensive ELA curriculum for grades 6-12. Our standards-aligned units are highly engaging and develop core reading and writing skills.
Want to engage students in independent research? Looking to hook students with interesting research questions and informational texts? CommonLit has your back.
CommonLit’s 360 curriculum provides research units for grades 6-10 that will help students complete independent research and craft evidence-based research papers.
Get students excited about their research with Essential Questions designed around timely topics
Each research unit has an Essential Question that students analyze and discuss throughout the unit. The topics for each research unit are designed to be interesting, timely, and relevant to students’ lives.
Students will learn about the status of the world’s oceans, discuss if social media is beneficial or risky, argue if contact sports are worth the risk, research how branding influences purchasing behavior, and learn about the human costs of clothing.
Here are the research units and their Essential Questions:
Grade | Unit Title | Essential Question |
6th | Our Changing Oceans | How are changes in the world’s oceans affecting people and animals? How can we be better stewards of our oceans and waterways? |
7th | Social Media: Risks and Rewards | Is social media more beneficial or more risky for teens? How can we promote the benefits of social media over the drawbacks? |
8th | Contact Sports: Worth the Risk? | Are contact sports worth the risks? How can we provide a clearer picture of the benefits and risks of contact sports to prospective players and their parents? |
9th | The Science of Branding: Why We Buy | How do brands use different tactics to influence our purchasing behavior? How can we make branding tactics and messaging more visible to potential consumers? |
10th | The Fashion Industry: Past to Present | What are the true human costs of the clothes we buy? |
Get students excited about the research topic with introductory slide decks
Each unit comes with introductory slide decks that preview what students will be learning about over the course of the unit. The slide decks spark classroom discussion, hooking students from the very first lesson.
In Our Changing Oceans (6th grade), students discuss what it would be like to be an oceanographer, preview the texts they will be reading about issues facing our oceans, and hear about the key skills they will be learning throughout the unit.
![7th grade research paper ideas 7th grade research paper ideas](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-1--4--1.png)
Informational texts anchor each research unit
CommonLit’s research units are centered around informational texts that provide students with key background information and research to eventually support their end-of-unit essay.
Four core texts make up the Essential Reading Lessons for 6th grade. These texts teach students about the need to protect Antarctica and how plastic debris, sea level rise, and overfishing are affecting the world’s oceans. These texts teach students important facts they will need to cite in their end-of-unit research papers.
![7th grade research paper ideas A list of the unit texts for 6th Grade Unit 4.](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-3--4-.png)
Supplemental texts allow students to dig deeply into independent research
Each unit comes with a large selection of supplemental texts to provide students with more facts and information to use in their research paper.
In middle school, students use the provided supplemental texts to further inform their research. In high school, students learn about finding reliable sources and can use both provided supplemental texts on CommonLit and texts from additional sources in their research.
For example, in Our Changing Oceans, 6th graders choose to research one of three topics related to ocean changes.
![7th grade research paper ideas A list of the supplemental texts 6th graders are given.](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-4--4-.png)
In high school, students are taught about the beginning of the research process, including developing a research question, finding reliable sources, and reading and taking notes. Students in 9th and 10th grade can use the supplemental texts as well as texts found in books or on other online learning platforms.
![7th grade research paper ideas A screenshot of an independent research lesson for 9th graders.](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-5--3-.png)
Students learn about the research process and how to craft research papers throughout the unit
Each unit includes lessons about conducting research so students can be prepared for the end-of-unit research paper. Scaffolded supports help students move through the research process. In lower grades, certain steps in the process, like developing a research question and finding reliable sources, are provided for students.
Students learn about writing research papers during writing lessons. In 8th Grade, students learn how to discuss and outline research papers. Then, they learn how to write a counterclaim, format a Works Cited page, and use in-text citations properly. Each of these research-paper focused writing lessons will prepare students to answer the end-of-unit essay.
![7th grade research paper ideas A screenshot of the arc of writing instruction for 8th grade.](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-6--2-.png)
Students also explore how to conduct independent research in research-specific lessons. In 8th Grade, teachers explain that they have provided the first two steps of the research process for students: developing a research question and finding reliable sources.
In the lesson, students are taught how to use a graphic organizer to take notes on each text they read in preparation for their research paper. Students also engage in an Introduction to Independent Research lesson, where they learn about steps of the research process and begin reading and taking notes on supplemental texts. Later, students engage in a discussion lesson that will help them synthesize all the information they have learned throughout the unit by discussing the research question with classmates.
Related Media Explorations provide even more background information for students
Related Media Explorations are a unique cornerstone of our ELA curriculum. These interactive tasks bring our research units to life and provide background information for students to use in their research.
In 8th Grade, students learn about the way football culture has changed over the past few decades as scientists learn more about the long-term effects of repeated concussions. Students watch three videos that explain the culture of football in the past and present, and analyze statistics about concussions before discussing the question: “Who is most responsible for shaping mindsets about tackling in football: players, coaches, parents, or fans?”
![7th grade research paper ideas 7th grade research paper ideas](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-7--1-.png)
Discussion lessons help students synthesize information in preparation for their research paper
Discussion lessons in each research unit provide students with the opportunity to practice citing evidence from sources, explain their evidence to classmates, and practice synthesizing information. These conversations give students the chance to gain new perspectives, receive feedback on their ideas, and boost their confidence before delving into the research paper.
In 8th Grade, students synthesize their ideas about the research question through a class discussion. After the discussion, students have an opportunity to outline their research paper using both their discussion notes and the note-taking graphic organizer they have used throughout the unit.
![7th grade research paper ideas 7th grade research paper ideas](https://www.commonlit.org/blog/content/images/2023/09/Image-12--1-.png)
Participate in an optional final project that fosters creative thinking and collaboration
Each research unit comes with an optional end-of-unit project to further engage students through project based learning. These optional projects help foster student creativity and collaboration. Students can work with a partner or group to complete the task.
In 8th grade, students must make a brochure providing prospective parents and student athletes with factual information about the benefits and risks about contact sports so families can make an informed decision about participating. Students must work with a peer with an opposing view on the topic so the brochure is factual and unbiased. This task encourages teamwork and collaboration between peers with differing views.
Grade | Unit Title | Optional Final Project |
6th | Our Changing Oceans | Create 1-3 mock social media posts about ocean conservation |
7th | Social Media: Risks and Rewards | Create 2-3 mock social media posts that promote positive usage of social media |
8th | Contact Sports: Worth the Risk? | Create a brochure to provide prospective parents and student athletes with factual information about the benefits and risks of contact sports |
9th | The Science of Branding: Why We Buy | Make a Brand Strategy and Messaging Video Blog to help prospective buyers of a brand make informed decisions about the company they are putting their money behind |
10th | The Fashion Industry: Past to Present | Put together a presentation about the humaneness of a chosen clothing brand for an audience of potential consumers |
Vocabulary and grammar lessons build student comprehension and writing skills
Each 360 unit comes with vocabulary and grammar lessons. Vocabulary activities help students internalize high-impact academic vocabulary words they will see in the texts they are reading. Grammar activities help students improve their writing skills, teaching students valuable skills to construct carefully crafted, grammatically correct paragraphs.

A Selection Of Research Paper Topics For 7th Grade Students
When choosing a title for your 7th grade research paper, you have to keep in mind several things. First, as a teenager you’ve had some real life experience, so you can always write about that. In fact, writing about something personal can inspire a really strong paper. Then, you are likely to continue your research further in school, so it may be better if you choose a problem that has enough information on itself. Finally, your paper has to be connected with something you’ve been learning throughout the year. If all this seems too intimidating to you, check the selection of the strong 7th grade research paper topics below:
- Dress code at school: should teachers wear uniforms too?
Being a student for several years now you probably know how uncomfortable uniforms can be. However, they serve a certain purpose. So should teachers have a dress code as well?
- Grading at school: should students evaluate teachers’ work?
Do you think teachers’ progress should be evaluated just like students’ is? Would it make any difference to how the staff would treat undergraduates?
- Cosmetics and medicine testing on animals: are there any ways we can avoid that?
It’s a well-known fact that live creatures are used in scientific testing when some new substance is involved. Do you think there are any alternative things/means we can use to stop killing animals?
- Single-sex schooling: pros and cons.
Some researches show that men benefit more than women from such kind of an educational system. But is school only about studying? Do your own investigation on what are other advantages and disadvantages of a unisex school system.
- Googling vs. remembering: should students be allowed to use smartphones in class?
People nowadays have very little motivation to memorize facts or dates since they can easily look them up anytime they need them. However, can students really benefit from such an approach? Memorizing can be a good brain exercise that can help you keep your mental health too.
- Early romance: when do people should start seeing each other?
It’s a very controversial topic, but you certainly have some personal experience to base your point of view on. Surely, you can fall for someone even in the kindergarten, but when can these affections be considered as serious ones?
- Homework in education: advantages and disadvantages.
This topic can seem a very easy one for you. However, make sure you do the necessary research and provide substantial proof to all of your statements.

100 Interesting Research Paper Topics for High Schoolers
What’s covered:, how to pick the right research topic, elements of a strong research paper.
- Interesting Research Paper Topics
Composing a research paper can be a daunting task for first-time writers. In addition to making sure you’re using concise language and your thoughts are organized clearly, you need to find a topic that draws the reader in.
CollegeVine is here to help you brainstorm creative topics! Below are 100 interesting research paper topics that will help you engage with your project and keep you motivated until you’ve typed the final period.
A research paper is similar to an academic essay but more lengthy and requires more research. This added length and depth is bittersweet: although a research paper is more work, you can create a more nuanced argument, and learn more about your topic. Research papers are a demonstration of your research ability and your ability to formulate a convincing argument. How well you’re able to engage with the sources and make original contributions will determine the strength of your paper.
You can’t have a good research paper without a good research paper topic. “Good” is subjective, and different students will find different topics interesting. What’s important is that you find a topic that makes you want to find out more and make a convincing argument. Maybe you’ll be so interested that you’ll want to take it further and investigate some detail in even greater depth!
For example, last year over 4000 students applied for 500 spots in the Lumiere Research Scholar Program , a rigorous research program founded by Harvard researchers. The program pairs high-school students with Ph.D. mentors to work 1-on-1 on an independent research project . The program actually does not require you to have a research topic in mind when you apply, but pro tip: the more specific you can be the more likely you are to get in!
Introduction
The introduction to a research paper serves two critical functions: it conveys the topic of the paper and illustrates how you will address it. A strong introduction will also pique the interest of the reader and make them excited to read more. Selecting a research paper topic that is meaningful, interesting, and fascinates you is an excellent first step toward creating an engaging paper that people will want to read.
Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is technically part of the introduction—generally the last sentence of it—but is so important that it merits a section of its own. The thesis statement is a declarative sentence that tells the reader what the paper is about. A strong thesis statement serves three purposes: present the topic of the paper, deliver a clear opinion on the topic, and summarize the points the paper will cover.
An example of a good thesis statement of diversity in the workforce is:
Diversity in the workplace is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage for businesses, as it fosters innovation, enhances creativity, improves decision-making, and enables companies to better understand and connect with a diverse customer base.
The body is the largest section of a research paper. It’s here where you support your thesis, present your facts and research, and persuade the reader.
Each paragraph in the body of a research paper should have its own idea. The idea is presented, generally in the first sentence of the paragraph, by a topic sentence. The topic sentence acts similarly to the thesis statement, only on a smaller scale, and every sentence in the paragraph with it supports the idea it conveys.
An example of a topic sentence on how diversity in the workplace fosters innovation is:
Diversity in the workplace fosters innovation by bringing together individuals with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, which stimulates creativity, encourages new ideas, and leads to the development of innovative solutions to complex problems.
The body of an engaging research paper flows smoothly from one idea to the next. Create an outline before writing and order your ideas so that each idea logically leads to another.
The conclusion of a research paper should summarize your thesis and reinforce your argument. It’s common to restate the thesis in the conclusion of a research paper.
For example, a conclusion for a paper about diversity in the workforce is:
In conclusion, diversity in the workplace is vital to success in the modern business world. By embracing diversity, companies can tap into the full potential of their workforce, promote creativity and innovation, and better connect with a diverse customer base, ultimately leading to greater success and a more prosperous future for all.
Reference Page
The reference page is normally found at the end of a research paper. It provides proof that you did research using credible sources, properly credits the originators of information, and prevents plagiarism.
There are a number of different formats of reference pages, including APA, MLA, and Chicago. Make sure to format your reference page in your teacher’s preferred style.

Homeschool Help and Curriculum
How to Help T(w)eens Write Their First Research Paper
- Facebook 189
- Pinterest 35
We have learned over the years that parents often feel they know how to help teens write their first research paper. Here’s a little encouragement.
![7th grade research paper ideas How to Help Teens Write Their First Research Paper. It is important to write research papers in high school (and prepare for them in middle school). Here are some non-intimidating tips. #HomeschoolHighSchool #HomeschoolMiddleSchool #ResearchPaperReadiness #ResearchPaperWriting #ResearchPaperWritingHelp](https://www.7sistershomeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/How-to-Help-Teens-Write-Their-First-Research-Paper-2-1.jpg)
How to Help Teens Write Their First Research Paper
Middle schoolers and early high schoolers often feel intimidated by the thought of writing research papers . (Their parents do, too, sometimes!)
Anyone who has more than one kid has discovered that they are all different:
- Their personalities
- Their academic strengths and weaknesses
- Their needs and interests
One thing I have noticed that is the SAME in most tweens and teens: They need some handholding when they begin learning to write research papers. So how do you start that handholding and writing process?
One way is to start by a parent-led report-style research paper. (Remember the papers you used to write- if you went to traditional school in 5th or 6th grade? Those were reports: You were simply presenting information. You were not digesting the information. You were not worried about format or style.)
7Sisters can help with that report-style research paper, and we can do it for free! Simply download this parent-directed, step-by-step guide to writing a very basic, report-style research paper. It is a simple and fairly quick process that will remove some of the intimidation factor for both you and your homeschoolers!
![7th grade research paper ideas research paper help for reluctant writers](https://www.7sistershomeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/edd/2020/02/research-paper-help-for-reluctant-writers-.png)
Their next research paper should be a real research paper…but keep up the hand holding!
The next research-writing project should go beyond the simple report. Homeschoolers should be learning some serious research-paper basic concepts like:
- What is plagiarism?
- How do you choose a topic for a research paper?
- How do you actually do the research?
- How do you organize your research?
- How do you create citations?
With this next-step research paper, they do not need to decide on an official style or format for their research paper. They can do that next year.
In the meantime, the concepts listed above are big concepts. Working through the process with a parent will be important.
However, in this real research paper, there will be work that many students will be able to do on their own. To understand what the help/support/let-go process can look like, it is good to have a guide. That’s why we created the writing guide: Research Writing Readiness .
![7th grade research paper ideas Research Writing Readiness](https://www.7sistershomeschool.com/wp-content/uploads/edd/2020/05/ResearchReadinessCover-791x1024.jpg)
This guide came about because our local homeschool parents kept asking 7Sister, Allison, to help young people write their very first research paper. (You may have noticed that Allison created our popular MLA Research Paper Writing Guide . Homeschooling parents told her they wanted a prequel!)
After teaching our local beginners, Allison (along with 7Sister Marilyn, who constructed 7Sisters’ Middle School Fairy Tale Writing Guide ) created a new writing guide to help homeschooling parents and their homeschoolers to create that very first research paper. It is a homeschooler/parent, do-it-together guide: Research Writing Readiness: Foundational Skills for Successful Research Papers.
Let me explain how to help teens to write their first research paper using 7Sisters Research Writing Readiness downloadable eworkbook.
Research Writing Readiness: Foundational Skills for Successful Research Papers is a step -by-step guide. It provides the tools you need to introduce the research-paper writing process in 20 short lessons. The lessons can be done one per day over 20 school days or (for a more relaxed process) the lessons can be spread out to 1 or 2 steps per week.
Research Writing Readiness helps a student work with a parent on a first research paper.
This easy-to-use guide provides the tools you need to introduce the research-paper writing process. That way, when they are in high school, they will be prepared to write their research papers.
The guide is intended for use:
- in homeschool middle school (7th grade or 8th grade for many students)
- homeschool high schoolers who lack experience or
- homeschool high schoolers who struggle with research writing
This 7Sisters guide does not teach a particular style of research paper (i.e., MLA, APA, Chicago). Instead, it provides:
- Step by step instructions for student from topic choice to final draft
- Practice assignments that will help them create a first research paper
- paraphrasing
- note taking
- citing sources
- Including: How-to instructions for the parent/teacher
- Sample grading rubric
Download Research Writing Readiness for your homeschoolers and help them develop powerful research paper writing skills that they need in high school (and in college)!

Undergraduate research can provide students with hands-on experience in a lab environment, as well as help them determine career opportunities they might not otherwise consider.

Undergraduate research opportunities are one way to provide experiential learning in many disciplines, introducing learners to research methods under the supervision of a faculty member and providing experience for a résumé.
A 2021 study from the University of Central Florida found student researchers are more likely to have higher grade point averages and graduation rates, and higher matriculation into graduate school, as well as life skills such as analyzing literature critically, observing and collecting data and communication.
However, not every student has equal access to undergraduate research opportunities. The study found non-STEM students, transfer students and part-time students are less likely to participate in research compared to their peers.
To increase student participation in undergraduate research and boost skill development among student researchers, institutions have created innovative models of work. Here are seven examples.
Survey Says
Around three in 10 students say they are required to participate in undergraduate research, according to a winter 2023 Student Voice survey from Inside Higher Ed , and a slightly smaller number (27 percent) believe that undergraduate research should be required in their program.
Four-year students are more likely to say undergraduate research is required in their program (32 percent) compared to their two-year peers (15 percent).
First-year research opportunities—University of Missouri
Career exposure in the first year can help students feel confident about their paths throughout college and provide a head start in building their résumés.
Mizzou is known for its Interdisciplinary Plant Group that hosts research scholars exploring innovations in plant biology and a first-year program that provides young researchers a leg up in their work, giving them research time with more experienced researchers and mentorship.
FRIPS, short for Freshman Research in Plants , supports 10 to 15 students annually, who work alongside a faculty member and their research group on plant biology. Students also meet regularly with their FRIPS scholars cohort and gain professional development training.
Each student’s work is funded by grant dollars from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Graduates of FRIPS often go on to become Goldwater Scholars and NSF graduate research fellows. The program also creates a place of belonging and community for new students to the university.
Underrepresented minority students—Davidson College
Some students face systemic disadvantages in participating in co-curricular experiences because they may lack the social capital or be unfamiliar with the norms of higher ed to identify and participate in a faculty-led research experience.
At Davidson College in North Carolina, rising sophomores can participate in a four- to six-week summer intensive research fellowship program called RISE (Research in Science Experience) . This program is designed for students from historically marginalized groups including low-income and first-generation students.
The goal of RISE is to equip students to take on larger, more intensive academic-year and summer experiences for later in their college career. Each student receives $2,500 in scholarships and funds to cover on-campus housing, which the college arranges for all participants.
Jacquelline Nyakunu , a rising junior at Davidson, spent the summer with chemistry professor Cindy Hauser researching hookah, studying the smoking of shisha and the chemical composition of the tobacco. Nyakunu wrote in a blog post that the experience taught her about her passion for chemistry, built her research skills and solidified her career path as a pre-medicine student.

Transfer students—University of California, Los Angeles
Transferring into a new institution can be a challenge for many students, and finding ways to get plugged in and connected to one’s field of interest can be just as hard.
UCLA offers an initiative exclusively for transfer students to both promote their academic success at the university and expose them to undergraduate research opportunities, the Transfer Research Entry Program (TREP).
To participate, each student must be an incoming transfer student with at least two years remaining at UCLA and be considering a career in research. Participants attend a one-week virtual bootcamp about research, which covers careers in research and how to write a cover letter and curriculum vitae. The program also provides networking opportunities for transfer students and academic survival skills for the transition to UCLA.
There’s no obligation to take a research role after the bootcamp, but students are encouraged to do so and given guidance on how to find their areas of interest, the application and interview process as well.
Financial support—University of Texas at El Paso
Financial need can be a barrier to participation for some students. The University of Texas at El Paso is a Hispanic Serving Institution (84 percent Hispanic), commuter school with a large population of Pell-eligible students (60 percent) and first-generation learners. Many students are working to support themselves and their families, explains Lourdes E. Echegoyen, director of the Campus Office of Undergraduate Research Initiatives.
As a result, UTEP staff realized a need to provide financial assistance through employment to give students high-impact activities.
University staff have identified grant funding from federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Education, and private foundations.
Students can receive financial support through stipends or tuition scholarships. The university’s student employment program also provides employment positions for undergraduate researchers across disciplines.
“Generally, full time students are supported to conduct research during the academic year from 10 to 19 hours per week—depending on the program—thus allowing students to remain on campus and be mentored as research trainees,” Echegoyen says.
UTEP leaders have seen the benefits of undergraduate research on retention and persistence among students, with one program focused on biomedical research having a 98 percent retention rate among students across four years, compared to a 37 percent retention rate among their peers who did not participate.&
Community partnerships—Roosevelt University
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Roosevelt University in Chicago partnered with The Field Museum to digitize and analyze data collected at the museum. Visitors had measured specimens of liverworts, but the data needed to be sorted and inaccurate measurements eliminated from the set to be most useful to scientists.
Students wrote code to screen and clean the data, helping set the researchers up for success and teaching students firsthand about research processes in a remote setting.
Career development—Elon University
At Elon in North Carolina, returning students can participate in undergraduate research over the summer in between academic terms, funded by the university. While career readiness is a natural component of research experiences, leaders at the university wanted to bolster student skills beyond the laboratory, says Eric Hall, professor of exercise and director of undergraduate research at Elon.
Now, student researchers attend regular professional-development workshops that inform and establish career competencies. The workshops are co-led by other campus partners, including the writing center, career services, the fellowships office and librarians, Hall says.
For the 2024 session, workshops include a session on LinkedIn on how the fellowships office can support student goals, professional writing for graduate school and industry, and navigating academic publishing.
The new initiative is still being evaluated, with formal data collection underway, but anecdotal evidence from post-assessments shows students enjoy and learn from the experiences.
Research in the classroom—California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Cal Poly Pomona leaders wanted to expose more learners to undergraduate research, understanding that first-generation, Pell-eligible or historically underserved students have lower access to research opportunities, says Winny Dong, faculty director for the office of undergraduate research.
Rather than asking students to squeeze an additional responsibility into their schedules, faculty members brought research to the classroom, embedding experiences into required general education courses.
The initiative makes it so all students are exposed to research and required to participate in some capacity, helping build their skills and pique interest for those who may consider a career in research.
