Vienna BioCenter PhD Program, a Doctoral school of the University of Vienna and Medical University of Vienna in collaboration with the Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI) and Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the Austrian Academy of Science, Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) and the Max Perutz Labs.
As a student at the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program you will be supervised by a top scientist and have full access to state-of-the-art facilities, thus giving you an opportunity to launch a successful scientific career. Here you will find the freedom and means to develop a brilliant PhD project. The Vienna BioCenter Campus is extremely dynamic and highly multidisciplinary with research areas ranging from molecules to populations.
At the Vienna BioCenter (VBC), we want to foster a world-class scientific environment where PhD students develop and excel. The purpose of the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program is to train rigorous, independent scientists through a comprehensive training program. The program encourages students to positively contribute to the advancement of science by making and publishing important scientific discoveries. The training program will allow students to acquire scientific skills, which are important for a career in science, but also for other career paths.
The mission of the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program is to promote interdisciplinary research in the Life Sciences at the highest level, and to help excellent PhD students develop into tomorrow's leading scientists through a comprehensive training program. The Vienna BioCenter is a world-class scientific research environment where students and group leaders from different backgrounds interact in an inter-disciplinary, open and creative environment. By promoting the exchange of ideas, by bringing together different and often complementary disciplines, and by supporting the development and adoption of novel cutting-edge technologies, we provide outstanding opportunities for ambitious and motivated students. Enrolled students are expected to contribute to the advancement of science by making important scientific discoveries and by publishing these in international, peer-reviewed journals. Are you looking for a scholarship or a research grant for Austria? International students and researchers can apply for scholarships at various institutions. There are different financial support options depending on your country of origin and your academic level. Please note that scholarships are offered by different institutions (OeAD, other financial support organisations, foundations, etc.).
Institutions interested in using the OeAD’s proven services for their tailor-made programmes can find more information here .
You can find details of the OeAD’s scholarship programmes – for bachelor's, master’s, PhD students, post-docs and researchers – here. Some programmes are open to applicants from all countries, others are only open for specific target groups (depending on their country of origin). You will find a reference to the target group for which the scholarship is intended (in parentheses).
Moreover, some higher education institutions offer scholarships for international students themselves. Institutional scholarships. The international office of the higher education institution at which you are going to study provides information about these.
Please also enquire in your home country whether or not there are scholarships or other financial support options for you.
At www.grants.at , Austria’s most comprehensive database for scholarships and research funding, you will find an overview of a great number of financial support options. Please note that there are hardly any financial support options for students in bachelor’s programmes. A whole degree programme in Austria is also hardly ever supported financially.
The oead.map is a virtual map which displays registered projects and alumni funded by the OeAD and allows them to be presented in an international context. By using this map, higher education institutions and international organisations can easily find out about OeAD-funded projects from their region. Students and researchers can look for registered OeAD scholarship holders and connect with alumni through the oead.map.

Excellent research deserves to be supported: TU Wien offers its scientists attractive research funding opportunities. The TU Wien funding programmes are tailored specifically to the needs of researchers at TU Wien. Hence, in basic research as well as applied research and development, strengths are reinforced and the accent is on research for the future.
Information on external funding programmes can be found on the pages of the TU Wien service units National Funding Support and European and International Resesarch Support , opens an external URL in a new window .
The calls for the TU funding programmes are noticed via the University Gazette , opens an external URL in a new window .
Through the Innovative Projects internal competitive funding programme, TU Wien supports scientifically ambitious project ideas from all faculties. Particular value is placed on inter-faculty collaborations. Depending on the latest call for proposals, pioneering ideas from young researchers are supported with infrastructure or staff. The innovative nature of the project being supported is evaluated under a peer review process and then discussed in a panel meeting.
Through its TOP/Start-up programme, TU Wien promotes research projects within the key areas defined by the faculties. The faculties are thus able either to strengthen established fields of expertise or promote the establishment of pioneering areas of research. The programme supports both basic research projects and applied research and development, and makes funds available for staff or infrastructure. The call is issued once during a rectorate period.
Learning from the best – that is what is on offer from doctoral programmes (DKs) financed by TU Wien. They allow the next generation of scientists to gain an excellent inter-disciplinary training based on the best of international research. Important elements of the funding of a doctoral programme by TU Wien include a multi-disciplinary approach to education in the university’s top research fields and the provision of 5–10 tutors for up to ten student.

In 2002, the setting up of ‘internal TU collaborative, multi-disciplinary research projects’ – TU Collaboration Centres, for short – provided a funding channel that was also intended to support current ‘bottom-up’ development in research. The ‘Multi-Faculty Collaboration Centre’ channel was designed to act as the first level of cross-subject/cross-faculty collaboration among research groups at TU Wien, also including researchers from other universities where relevant, as a springboard for research collaboration projects. Collaboration Centres.

A range of awards provides an attractive stimulant to research for PhD and post-doctoral students at TU Wien, which are also partially funded by external persons and institutions. Research achievements of PhD projects are being awarded, as well as PhD students aided with their research activities, and junior scientists supported for international mobility.
