Create an animated gif from powerpoint – with transparent background.

Creating animated GIFs in PowerPoint is a newer feature, so it may be familiar. However this feature has been updated recently with the ability to export animated GIFs with transparent backgrounds.

To create an animated GIF with a transparent background, start with a new PowerPoint file. The secret for exporting an animated GIF with transparent background is to us a white background (eg. the slide background is set to white, not a white shape as the bottom layer).

An animated GIF is a “flip book” animation. Each slide is the next part of the motion. There is no animation used in this example animated GIF. Here is the first slide:

Next, the slide is duplicated and the hand graphic flipped to the opposite view using PowerPoint’s to FLIP HORIZONTAL tool and the text “HELLO” is rotated and larger.

This is a simple 2 step animation, but a 3rd step is needed for the animation effect. So slide 1 is duplicated and set as slide 3.

slide 1 transition = NONE, for a seamless transition of the animation. Set automatic slide advance after 0.00 seconds.

slide 2-3 transition = MORPH, which creates the smooth animation of the hand wave and text movement. Duration = .25 seconds. Set automatic slide advance after 0.00 seconds.

It is time to export as an animated GIF.

• Go to FILE and select EXPORT
• Select CREATE AN ANIMTED GIF
• Choose the size and quality of the GIF
• Check the box to MAKE BACKGROUND TRANSPARENT (this is the new feature!)
• The “seconds to spend on each slide” can be left with the default value. It will not be used as each slide has a preset automatic transition set.
• click CREATE GIF

And that’s it!

Aside from the free PowerPoint animations, you can also benefit from using live-action GIFs.  Giphy is one of the databases that offer an endless library of GIFs based on movies, tv-shows, videos, and everything else. You will find out everything viral and the latest memes made into GIFs. Now, the question is. Is it legal to use a free GIF that has a few seconds from a scene from an obviously copyrighted movie or video?

📝  Just like every other creative work, GIFs are copyright material. However . They are more complicated as there is no legal way to license the use of GIFs for the purposes of commercial use. With this being said, in most cases, GIFs fall under the grey area of Fair Use .

With this in mind, you will find out many brands use such GIFs for their blog posts, ads, and social media. You can also use such materials in your PowerPoint presentations to make your visuals more fun and engaging. Especially if you’re an educator and wish to make your lesson more exciting for your student. Memes will save us all! 🙂

Similar to Giphy,  Tenor also offers a huge database of GIF images on every topic. This database benefits from an entire community of users uploading GIFs on a daily basis so there’s something for everyone.

And the last source, something we stumbled on recently, is MotionElements . This is a royalty-free marketplace in Asia for stock media where we found a curious way to make presentation GIFs. It’s not free PowerPoint animations but gives an equally nice interaction and life to a presentation.

Their  free animated gifs category  has various few-seconds videos that you can turn into GIFs. When you click a video, you can select which moment from it you’d like as a GIF. Once you’re ready, you can choose to save the GIF in three different sizes.

• Requirements: Downloading freebies requires registration (no credit card info required unless you want to download Premium resources)
• License: Royalty-Free │ Safe for Commercial Use
• Available Gif Sizes from Videos: Small (256 x 144 px), Medium (480 x 270 px), Large ( 640 x 360 px)

Export animated GIFs with transparent backgrounds

Hi, Office Insiders! I’m Aimee Leong, a PM on the Office  Graphics  team. I’m  here  to  announce  we’ve begun rolling out the ability to  export  animated  GIFs with a transparent backgro und.   

Animated GIFs  

Animated GIFs are a  key   medium in which we  express ourselves  daily.  Anyone should be able to create a GIF, and  I  know you were thrilled when  we  made  creating  an  animated GIF easier . Though we noticed  a lot of you wanted  the ability to remove  the  background to create stickers and floating  objects .  W e’re  excited to share  that when exporting to an animated GIF, a new option will allow you to  make the background transparent .  

How it works 

1. Open PowerPoint  and insert your media.  

a. Tip: Adjust the dimensions of your slide via the Slide Size menu  by selecting   Design  > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size .  

2. Choose your export options .  

a. Go to File > Export > Create an Animated GIF ,   and  adjust the size/quality of your GIF  and set the seconds spent on each slide  

3. *New* tick the option to  Make Background Transparent .  

4. Click the Create GIF button.

5. In  the  Save As  dialog box,  navigate to where you’d like  to export and save  your Animated GIF .  

6. Click Save . 

7. Go to your selected folder and see your creation!

Availability 

This feature is rolling out to Win32 Desktop users running Beta Channel Version 2010 (Build 13318.20000) or later. It is coming to Mac soon.

Want a great way to share your Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow on social media, your company intranet, or a blog? You can create an animated GIF of your PowerPoint presentation and share it with the world.

If you have PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows or Mac, creating an animated GIF is a piece of cake. Since the steps differ slightly, we'll list them separately so that you can jump right to the platform you need.

Create an Animated GIF in PowerPoint on Windows

Create an animated gif in powerpoint on mac, notes on your animated gif.

Open your PowerPoint slideshow on your Windows computer and click File > Export.

Under Export, choose "Create an Animated GIF."

To the right, select the quality in the drop-down list at the top. It's set to medium by default, but you can choose small, large, or extra large if you like.

Optionally, you can check the box for "Make Background Transparent."

By default, the Seconds to Spend on Each Slide is set to one second. This refers to a minimum number of seconds per slide. If you have animations that are longer than the minimum, they will be included. Transitions between slides do not count toward this minimum. You can use the arrows to increase the number of seconds or enter a number in the box.

You can include all slides in your presentation, or a certain range of Slides, using the arrows or the number boxes.

With everything set, click "Create GIF." You should now be able to see your new presentation GIF in the location you chose.

Open your presentation in PowerPoint for Mac and click File > Export from the menu bar.

In the Export window, choose a location in which to save the file. You can rename it if you like, and optionally, add tags. If you want to save it online, click "Online Locations" and pick your Place.

In the File Format drop-down list, select "Animated GIF."

The Image Quality is set to medium by default, but you can pick small, large, or extra large if you prefer. If you want a transparent background, check that box next to Background.

Another default setting is the Seconds Spent on Each Slide, which is one second. Like on Windows, this refers to a minimum duration spent on each slide, in which animations are included, and transitions don't count toward the minimum. You can adjust this by using the arrows or by entering a number of seconds in that box.

You can use all slides in your presentation, or a specific range of Slides, using the arrows or the number boxes.

When you're ready, click "Export." Then, head to the location where you saved the file and grab your GIF.

Here are just a few things to keep in mind for your animated GIF.

• The finished GIF will continuously loop. This is not currently an adjustable setting.
• Hidden slides will not be included in the GIF. Be sure to unhide those slides  first if you want them in the GIF.
• Media like videos or other GIFs, animations, and transitions will be included in the GIF.

Microsoft PowerPoint – How to create animated GIFs with a transparent background

Microsoft has started rolling out a new feature for Office for Windows users – animated GIFs.

With animated GIFs, Microsoft PowerPoint users can export the slides present inside a presentation as an animated GIF and save it to their PC for later use.

However, with the recent Beta Channel update on Windows, Microsoft has further enhanced the functionality and offer to make the background transparent when exporting.

How to export Animated GIFs in Power Point

1. Open PowerPoint and create a new ppt file. (Adjust slide size by selecting  Design > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size ) 

2. Once you are finished with the design and stuff, go to  File > Export > Create an Animated GIF .

3. Tick mark the option to  Make background transparent . 

4. Click the  Create GIF  button.

5. In the  Save As  dialog box, choose a location to save your Animated GIF and click  Save . 

Availability 

This feature is currently available to users running Office for Windows (Beta Channel) Version 2010  (Build 13318.20000) or later.

Animated GIFs are images encoded in the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), displaying a sequence of frames in a loop and creating a short animation effect. They are commonly used to add movement and visual interest to digital content.

Royalty-free describes intellectual property that can be used without having to pay royalties. Once a one-time fee is paid for a royalty-free license, the buyer is free to use it without having to pay recurring fees to the intellectual property owner.

Add an animated GIF to a slide

A .gif file can be either a still image or an animated image. If you have animated GIF, this article describes how to insert it on a slide.

If you have a GIF that is a still image, it can't be turned into an animated GIF.

You can add an animated GIF (or meme ) to a PowerPoint slide as you would with any other picture file.

You can insert a GIF file that is stored on your computer hard disk or in OneDrive.

Select the slide that you want to add the animated GIF to.

In the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Pictures .

In the Insert Picture From  dialog box, navigate to the location of the animated GIF you want to add.

Select the file, and then click Insert .

Find animated GIFs on the web

You can also search the web for GIFs by using Insert Online Pictures or Insert Clip Art , depending on your version of PowerPoint. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, choose Insert Online Pictures or Insert Clip Art . Type "animated gif" in the search box.

Determine how many times the animation loops

Animated GIFs often loop repeatedly without end. But you can change that by editing the GIF before you add it to your PowerPoint slide.

Once you have the GIF file saved to your computer, a relatively easy way to edit the GIF is with the online editor called ezgif.com.

Go to the GIF frame extractor (or "Splitter") on ezgif.com .

Under Upload image from your computer , click the Browse button to locate the GIF file on your computer. Select the file and then select the Open button.

Click Upload!

The animated GIF appears on the web page, followed by facts about the file size and dimensions, similar to this picture:

Click the Split to frames button below the animated GIF.

After a moment, a frame-by-frame breakdown is shown on the web page.

Below the many frames (scroll downward on the page as needed), there's a blue Edit animation button.

Click Edit animation .

The set of frames appears again, with a Skip , Copy , and Delay option for each frame. Below the frames are more options, including one for Loop Count .

Under GIF options , in the Loop Count box, type a numeral representing the number of times you want the GIF to play.

Click Make a GIF!

After a few moments, the revised GIF is shown below the Make a GIF! button. Below the revised GIF is a row of buttons, and the far right one is named save .

Click save to copy the revised GIF back to your computer.

Depending on your browser, the file will be saved to your Downloads folder or you'll be allowed to specify where you want the GIF file to be copied to on your computer.

With the revised GIF on your computer, you're ready to insert it on a slide in PowerPoint.

Make an animated GIF from a slide show

Animate text or objects

You can add an animated GIF to a PowerPoint slide as you would with any other picture file. You can insert a GIF file that is stored on your computer hard disk or in cloud storage (such as OneDrive).

On Home tab of the ribbon, under Insert , click Picture > Picture from File .

Navigate to the location of the animated GIF you want to add, make sure the file name ends with a .gif extension, select the file, and then click Insert .

To play the animation, select the Slide Show  menu and then select Play from Current Slide .

You can add an animated GIF to a slide by using PowerPoint for the web, just as you would with any other picture file, but the GIF won't play when the presentation is viewed in Slide Show. PowerPoint for the web can't play animated GIFs.

Insert a picture from your computer on a slide

Select the slide where you want to insert an image.

On the Insert tab, select Picture .

Browse to the picture you want to insert, select it, and then click Open .

After the picture is on your slide, you can resize it and move it wherever you want.

Using PowerPoint’s Animated GIF Function

PowerPoint has long been capable of playing animated GIFs in slideshow mode, but now you can actually create  animated GIFs with the program, further defining PowerPoint as a graphics authoring tool.

You can produce animated icons or image galleries for use on social media or even export an entire set of slides as a self-contained GIF slideshow. But a favorite use of mine for animated GIFs is to create a walk-in loop at the start of your presentation from which you can easily transition into your slide deck, something that historically was a tricky proposition, requiring linked slideshows, custom shows, or embedded files.

Whether presenting in person or remotely, it’s nice to provide more than just a static title slide as attendees enter. Here’s how you can do it.

Step 1 – Create Your Animations

Design the series of slides you would like to loop either in your current presentation or in a separate file—each frame or state of your GIF should be its own slide. You can also apply animations within a slide as we have done in the below example, but note that internal animations can significantly increase the size of your GIF. Apply desired slide transitions, but don’t worry about transition timings as they won’t be used.

Step 2 – Export

Go to File: Export… and choose, “Create an Animated GIF.” You’ll see options for the quality (and size) of the GIF and which slides in the file you want to use to create the animation. “Seconds spent on each slide” will override any slide transition timings you have, but will allow on-slide animations to play through before advancing.

You’ll also have the option of making the background transparent which will strip out content on the slide’s master and background slide fills. Making the background transparent will not crop your file to your content, so when creating small GIFs, consider changing your slide size (Design: Slide Size: Custom Slide Size…).

Note that transparency and slide selection are not available on the Mac at the time of this writing.

When all your settings are complete, click “Create GIF.”

Step 3 – Re-import

The last step is to simply reimport your newly created GIF onto an empty slide at the start of your presentation. You will see the GIF animation in normal mode (a recent added feature), but also in slideshow mode. As long as the slide with the GIF does not have an automatic advance applied, your slideshow will loop indefinitely until you click to advance to the next slide and begin your presentation.

A Couple of Warnings

Make sure there is no slide transition applied to the first slide in a series, otherwise you will see a black screen each time the GIF animation restarts.

Also note that animated GIF export requires a Microsoft 365 account, although playback is supported in all Office versions.

Lastly, if you want to amp up the “walk-in experience” even more, add an MP3 file to the slide, set it to start Automatically and check “Loop Until Stopped.” When presenting online, don’t forget to share your system sound in your web conferencing software.

Transparent frames, gif animation, what is a gif transparency maker.

This is a browser-based program that creates GIF animations with a transparent background. For example, if your GIF has a red background, then you can enter "red" or hex code "#FF0000" in the transparent color field, and this red background will be assigned the transparent color index, which will make it disappear from the output GIF. As a bonus, our app also allows making any GIF region transparent (not just the background). When you specify the color that should change to the transparent color, then it matches this color everywhere in the GIF. The color can be entered as a name ("blue"), hex or RGB code ("#0000FF" or "RGB(0, 0, 255)"), or selected via the attached color palette in options. By increasing or decreasing the threshold value, you can control the transparent color's tint, tone, and shade. By default, the application makes all GIF frames transparent but if necessary, you can remove the color only in the specified frames. Frames that will be made transparent can be listed as "1, 2, 6" or specified as a range "2-5". To make all frames transparent, enter the "*" symbol. You can also turn on the built-in GIF player and view the transparent GIF frame by frame. Sometimes, you need to see how one particular frame looks like. In this case, you can use the "Show One Frame" option that will pause the GIF player and display only the requested frame. To see all the transparent pixels at a glance, you can turn on the black and white filter, which displays transparent areas in black color and all opaque areas in white. Each transparent GIF can be instantly downloaded by clicking the "Save as" and "Download" buttons. Gifabulous!

GIF Transparency Maker Examples

Remove gif background.

In this example, we create a GIF animation with a transparent background. We remove the blue background of the original GIF and make the pixels around the jumping dog transparent. We enter the background color using the hex code "#4891C6" and include 5% of its bluish shades in the match. The input GIF has 25 frames and we remove this color in all of them. Transparent Fire GIF

Make Some Frames Transparent

In this example, we make only some of the GIF frames transparent. Instead of entering the asterisk symbol (which corresponds to all GIF frames), we enter the frame range "1-8", which corresponds to the first half of the GIF. The remaining frames 9-15 remain unchanged. We specify the white color as a replacement color and set the fuzzy color tone match percentage to 12, which also matches grayish pixels around Totoro's body.
