The King's Speech is a 2010 British biographical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Colin Firth plays the future King George VI who, to cope with a stammer, sees Lionel Logue, an Australian speech and language therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. The men become friends as they work together, and after his brother abdicates the throne, the new king relies on Logue to help him make his first wartime radio broadcast on Britain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939.

Seidler read about George VI's life after overcoming a stuttering condition he endured during his youth. He started writing about the relationship between the therapist and his royal patient as early as the 1980s, but at the request of the King's widow, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, postponed work until her death in 2002. He later rewrote his screenplay for the stage to focus on the essential relationship between the two protagonists. Nine weeks before filming began, Logue's notebooks were discovered and quotations from them were incorporated into the script.

Principal photography took place in London and around Britain from November 2009 to January 2010. The opening scenes were filmed at Elland Road, Leeds, and Odsal Stadium, Bradford, both locations standing in for the old Wembley Stadium. For indoor scenes, Lancaster House substituted for Buckingham Palace, and Ely Cathedral stood in for Westminster Abbey, while the weaving mill scene was filmed at the Queen Street Mill in Burnley. The cinematography differs from that of other historical dramas: hard light was used to give the story a greater resonance and wider than normal lenses were employed to recreate the Duke of York's feelings of constriction. A third technique Hooper employed was the off-centre framing of characters: in his first consultation with Logue, the Duke is captured hunched on the side of a couch at the edge of the frame.

Kings Speech

A restrained and mellow role

You get completely get caught up in Colin Firths character he manages to perfectly convey the frustration, if you had never seen him in anything else you could swear he actually had a stammer. The chemistry between Colin Firth and Geoffory rush is fantastic, you can really see why this was up for so many oscars. All the characters are unforgettable it already feels like an instant British classic Helena Bonham Carter plays the doting wife incredibly which makes a big change from her usual odd roles often in her husband films it was a refreshing change to see her in such a restrained and mellow role.

The screenplay, written by David Seidler is excellent. The dry British wit is hilarious. Tom Hooper (Elizabeth I) does a superb job directing this movie, and it is only rated 12a because of the swearing in the funny scene when Louge uses it to try and relax the king, it is still an incredibly feel good film. I should add that Helena Bonham-Carter is also spot-on as the haughty yet practical queen consort. Other more minor roles are effectively played (e.g., Winston Churchill, George V). The entire movie is a perfect blend of history, personal and familial drama, with broader themes of perseverance and overcoming adversity which give it a timeless application.

When it comes to the inevitable end of his career in the NFL, Travis Kelce is not looking to follow in his brother's footsteps . The Kansas City Chiefs star made a joke about "never" retiring  on Wednesday's episode of his New Heights podcast, as brother Jason Kelce 's own retirement from the Philadelphia Eagles was made official. 

In what Jason is calling "bureaucracy at its finest," the celebrated athlete was forced to formally share his intent to retire in an email and was placed on the organization's official "Reserved/Retired List" on June 2. This comes nearly three months after Jason publicly announced the end of his football career in a touching and tearful press conference inside the Eagles' NovaCare Complex as Travis emotionally looked on from the audience. 

Jason, 36, wondered on Wednesday with a laugh, "Is the whole video of me crying for 45 minutes not enough?" 

Jason then admitted, "I'm still getting used to it. It feels weird not going into the building and just the little conversations you have."

Directing his attention to his younger brother, he added, "You'll realize it, Trav, once it's gone."

Without missing a beat, Travis, 34, responded, "I'm never doing it. Not after that speech, dude. No, f**k that. I don't want to go through that." 

Immediately following Jason's heart-tugging remarks in March, the siblings broke down in tears again as they rehashed Jason's decision on their podcast. At the time, Travis expressed his lifelong admiration for his older brother. 

"You've always been a step ahead of me," Travis said. 

Jason shrugged off the remark, saying simply, "I'm older, Trav." 

Travis then assured  his brother  that he looks up to him in more ways than just age. 

"Yeah, but in this game alone, you've always been a step ahead of me and it's always been like I've had that flotation device right there," he explained, becoming choked up. 

"To have you out of it, man, it feels empty," Travis continued through tears. "It feels like, it's um, it's complete. It was a success." 

The waterworks prompted Jason to also begin breaking down. 

"It was a fun ass journey to watch," Travis managed to add. After a pause, he continued, "Like I said yesterday, man, I just appreciate you showing me the way and bringing us all along the journey with ya, big guy."

For the season ahead, Jason has signed on to serve as  a sportscaster for ESPN's Monday Night Football . His first assignment will be in San Francisco this fall when the 49ers face off against the New York Jets. 

Meanwhile, Travis recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. The $34.25 million deal -- which includes $17 million fully guaranteed this year -- makes Kelce the highest-paid tight end in the league.

"This is just following in your footsteps again," he said on the podcast last month . "You were the highest-paid center." 

Jason humbly replied, "That's what they say, I don't know if it's true or not." 

Saying he has loved "every single second" of his last 12 years in Kansas City, Travis added, "I'm gonna love the next two years playing here in Kansas City and  we'll see what happens after that ." 

Amid his current offseason, the three-time Super Bowl champion has been busy with  a full slate  of side hustles, including hosting  Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?   and testing his acting chops in Ryan Murphy's  Grotesquerie . He's also thrown his hat in the ring for consideration as Adam Sandler firms up plans for Netflix's upcoming  Happy Gilmore 2  -- though no formal casting has been announced. 

As part of his budding Hollywood career, Travis also recently  produced the movie  My Dead Friend Zoe  --  starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman -- and previously took a turn hosting  Saturday Night Live  in 2023. 

"That's the point of the offseason," Travis explained  during a January press conference . "Being able to get out there and really find what you love to do and I've been fortunate to do a few things outside of the sports world that I've been enjoying doing, like getting on camera." 

He continued, "The  SNL  stuff kinda opened up a new happiness and maybe a new career path for me, but it's funny for me to even say that at this point in my career because it's so much further down the road than it is right now." 

Beyond his skills on the field, Travis also made headlines last season amid his romance with  Taylor Swift . The pop star first attended one of his games in September, and quickly  became a fixture among Chiefs fans . When she wasn't busy on her Eras tour, Taylor was often by Travis' side all the way up to Super Bowl LVIII. 

For his part, Jason has said that he hopes to spend more time with his wife of six years, Kylie Kelce , and their young children in his retirement. The couple shares three daughters: Wyatt, 4, Elliotte, 3, and Bennett, 1.

The best LGBTQ+ movies to watch this Pride Month on Netflix

• June is Pride Month , a celebration of LGBTQ+ people, art, and culture.
• These 10 movies, which are available to stream on Netflix, all deal with queer subject matter.
• They include dramas, rom-coms, documentaries, and an animated movie.

Pride Month has been celebrated since 1970, though it wasn't officially recognized in the US until 1999, when President Bill Clinton declared June to be "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month." Over the years, it has become more inclusive and now represents any identity across the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Companies around the world now also mark Pride, sometimes to criticism. Some have been accused of " rainbow-washing ," which is when a brand supports the queer community for clout or to make money, rather than out of actual activism.

But Pride is also a time to hear new stories from this community.

These 10 movies, now streaming on Netflix, are a good way to be both entertained and educated.

Colman Domingo was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the biopic "Rustin."

"Rustin," released in 2023, tells the story of Bayard Rustin , a civil rights activist who was a major figure in planning the historic March on Washington in 1963, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

Rustin was also gay, which meant his efforts went largely under the radar until much later — he was effectively unknown for decades.

"Disclosure" is an in-depth look at what it's like to be trans in Hollywood.

"Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen" was released by Netflix in 2020, and features interviews with trans celebrities like Laverne Cox, Michaela Antonia Jaé Rodriguez, Chaz Bono, Alexandra Billings, Elliot Fletcher, and more.

In addition to hearing from these voices, "Disclosure" also examines how transgender people have been portrayed in the media over the last 60 years.

"Nimona" is an animated film based on the graphic novel of the same name.

In "Nimona," viewers are introduced to a neo-medieval society where two knights (voiced by Riz Ahmed and Eugene Lee Yang) can be boyfriends, and no one blinks an eye.

But the trans representation is more subtle. The titular character, Nimona, is a shapeshifter who chooses the form of a teenage girl. As Business Insider's Palmer Haasch noted, many have read Nimona's identity as a trans allegory.

The film was nominated for best animated feature at the 2024 Oscars.

"The Half of It" is a sweet coming-of-age tale about first love.

In "The Half of It," released in 2020, social outcast Ellie is hired by her neighbor Paul to help him woo Aster, a fellow student on whom Ellie also has a crush.

Inspired by the play "Cyrano de Bergerac," Ellie and Aster begin a letters- and texts-only relationship, with Aster thinking she's corresponding with Paul.

Not only is this a story about Ellie and Aster, but it also is the story of Paul and Ellie's friendship as his friendship with Ellie challenges his beliefs.

"A Single Man" stars Colin Firth as a grieving college professor.

In this 2009 drama, Firth plays George Falconer, a college professor whose longtime boyfriend, Jim (Matthew Goode), has recently died.

Interspersed with flashbacks of their relationship, the film follows George as he decides to kill himself rather than live with his grief. However, the people he meets along the way may persuade him to continue living.

Firth was nominated for an Oscar for his performance.

"Tangerine" is on its way to becoming a holiday favorite.

Kitana Kiki Rodriguez stars as Sin-Dee Rella, a trans sex worker who is just trying to live her life after getting out of prison on Christmas Eve in 2015's "Tangerine."

Deceptively sweet, "Tangerine" is about a largely unrepresented community onscreen. While director Sean Baker doesn't romanticize the day-to-day lives of Sin-Dee and her friends, "Tangerine" is a heartwarming holiday soon-to-be classic.

"Alex Strangelove" is perfect for any teen figuring out their identity.

In this 2018 teen rom-com, Alex is a high school student who, in a rush to lose his virginity, decides to have sex with his best friend, Claire. However, when he meets Elliot, a gay classmate, Alex begins to think more about who he's attracted to and who he really is.

"Boy Erased" sheds a light on conversion therapy.

"Boy Erased," released in 2018, is based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by Garrard Conley. 

As a teen in the early 2000s, Jared Eamon (Lucas Hedges) is part of a Christian family in Arkansas. He is sent to a conversion therapy camp in Memphis.

While not the most uplifting watch, conversion therapy is a harmful practice that is still being used now, and "Boy Erased" shows exactly why it doesn't work.

"A Secret Love" is a 2020 documentary about a relationship between two women that remained a secret for almost 70 years.

Terry Donahue, a player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and Pat Henschel were in a relationship for 72 years after meeting the 1940s.

But somehow, they were able to keep their relationship a secret for almost 70 of those years, before telling their grand-nephew (and director) Chris Bolan. The film tells the story of their love, and how they kept it hidden.

The 2020 adaptation of "The Boys in the Band" reunites the cast from the 2018 Broadway revival.

Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchinson, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins — all gay actors — reunited for the movie adaptation of the 1968 play after acting in the 2018 revival.

The film is about a group of friends living in New York City — each with a unique relationship with their sexuality, view on monogamy, and more — who are forced to be in an apartment together for the night to celebrate a friend's birthday.
