Takkar Movie Review: Siddharth’s film is absurdity at its best

Director karthik g krish’s takkar is an outdated commercial entertainer featuring siddharth, divyansha kaushik and abhimanyu singh. the screenplay will test your patience, says our review..

Listen to Story

Siddharth's Takkar released in theatres on June 9.

  • Takkar released in theatres on June 9.
  • The film is directed by Karthik G Krish.
  • Siddharth, Divyansha Kaushik and Abhimanu Singh play lead roles.

Release Date: 9 Jun, 2023

Siddharth, a man of many talents, promised that Takkar will mark his arrival as a full-fledged commercial hero. The film, which has been lying in the cans for a while now, finally saw the light of the day on June 9. As Siddharth claimed, was the film impressive? Let’s find out!

Gunz AKA Gunasekhar (Siddharth) is a helpless youngster who wants to become rich. He travels to Chennai and takes up different jobs to achieve his dream. In most of his jobs, he was disrespected, which made him work for a taxi service as a cab driver. Meanwhile, there is Lucky AKA Mahalakshmi (Divyansha Kaushik) who thinks that money is the root cause of misery.

Also, there is the villain, Raza (Abhimanyu Singh), and his gang, who are involved in human trafficking, smuggling and all anti-social activities. At one point in time, their lives get intertwined, which makes everyone run towards their goal.

Takkar is a film that should have come out in the 2000s. Director Karthik G Krish’s story is so redundant that you could guess every single plot twist miles ahead of its arrival. The film is silly and absurd on so many levels that every sequence ends up being unintentionally funny. There’s an entire stretch involving Yogi Babu meeting his gangster father. While the dialogues are supposed to be funny, you don’t laugh at the jokes, you laugh at the silliness unfolding on screen.

We are in 2023 and directors like Karthik G Krish still rely on calling Yogi Babu monkey face, donkey face and buffalo face. The film also features a bunch of Chinese people, who are called Gurkha boys by the actress. Forget political correctness, why can’t filmmakers stay away from such name-calling?

Takkar also falls under the category – it’s so bad that it’s good! The film has a romantic angle that screams weird. Siddharth and Divyansha have different takes on love. Both of them want to prove a point to each other. And guess what they do! They book a motel to have sex and voila! The heroine falls in love with the hero because he irons her clothes, picks up the comb she accidentally drops and opens the car door for her.

Siddharth tried his best to shoulder the film. But, despite his serious face and myriad expressions, one just cannot take anything seriously in the film. The villain and his gang are so stupid that you would want to smack them in their head, asking them to be at least slightly deadly. But no! That’s too high of an expectation for a film like Takkar.

Divyansha Kaushik is an eye candy in the film. She is given some interesting dialogues about feminism and patriarchy. But, these statements do not make any sense as she plays a damsel in distress, who has to be saved by the hero at the end of the day.

Music by Nivas K Prasanna was jarring to the ears, especially during the emotional sequences. The viral Nira song, however, was picturised well by cinematographer Vanchinathan Murugesan.

Takkar is a film that will continue to test your patience every now and then. Its silliness and absurdity will blow your mind.

Karthik G Krish's 'Takkar' is filled with good ideas, but none of them are fleshed out convincingly

Takkar Movie Review

Takkar Movie Cast & Crew

I'll give Karthik G Krish this much: he is a director with ideas. Take the stretch where a man has to hand over the woman he loves to a bunch of gangsters, because they have a gun on his best friend's head. Later, when all works out and the man attempts to reclaim his woman, she refuses. She says he should have thought of her safety first. He says, "I've known my best friend for 25 years." She replies, "So I'll have to wait for 25 years before I know you'll think of  me  first?" It's a snappy line, and a great thought. She is really mad, because she has guarded herself against men and the one man she let her guard down with has done this to her. At this point, we need the writing to take this girl from "all men are the same" to "yes, this man did something shitty, but he is indeed different." And that, the writing never does. The closure to this dilemma is silly to the point of being insulting.

That's  Takkar  for you. It's filled with good ideas that are executed badly, either because of the writing or the performances. The casting is terrible. Abhimanyu Singh (the villain) and Divyansha Kaushik (the heroine), particularly, are fishes out of this water. Only Siddharth slips comfortably into his character's skin. The film is being sold as an action movie, but it's a lot more. The Siddharth character, a somewhat angry young man named Gunasekaran, is sick of being poor. He wants money, lots of it. The heroine, named Lucky, is super-rich, and also super-tired of the men who want her only because of her riches. That's a solid idea for a drama, but it is squandered because the film cannot make up its mind whether to flavour this drama with action or romance or comedy. Speaking of comedy, there's, again, a great idea about a red car and a green car, but the running-gag potential is never realised.

The writing, at one point, involves a pink teddy bear because… I don't even want to think about it.  Takkar  could have been a good road movie built on the holy pillars of commercial cinema: action, comedy, and romance. But the messy film ends up all over the place. You look at the basic idea and say "nice", but nothing is fleshed out with any kind of conviction. When you hear of Yogi Babu as a wannabe, Mumbai-based gangster who has come to Chennai for gangster-training, the idea is automatically funny. But every scene involving the comedian is spectacularly unfunny.  Takkar  is a classic case of something that must have sounded good during narration. It must have sounded so wacky, so different for a "commercial film". But the way it's been pulled off is painful. Siddharth may be getting the blows, but we end up being bruised.

Takkar review: Yet another run-of-the-mill romantic drama

Director Karthik G Krish's film is nothing but the same-old story of a rich girl falling madly in love with a poor boy.

Insipid and boring!

Takkar (Tamil)

  • Cast: Siddharth, Yogi Babu, Divyansha, Abimanyu Singh, Munishkanth, and RJ Vigneshkanth
  • Director:  Karthik G Krish
  • Producers: Sudhan Sundaram and G Jayaram
  • Music: Nivas K Prasanna
  • Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Emraan Hashmi, and Revathy
  • Director: Maneesh Sharma
  • Producer: Aditya Chopra
  • Music: Pritam Chakraborty
  • Runtime: 2 hours 35 minutes

Director Karthik G Krish’s Takkar (Clash/Conflict), which can mean different things in different languages, is a commercial entertainer that hardly entertains.

The film is a mix of everything, yet nothing comes through.

The “modern” love story revolves around a rich feminist Mahalakshmi aka Lucky (Divyansha) — who has no faith in love and men — and a poor chauffeur named Gunasekhar alias Guna (Siddharth) who works in a firm renting out luxury cars.

Guna’s ambition is to get rich but his Achilles’ Heel is his fear as a result of which he is unable to hit back at those often assaulting him.

Siddharth Takkar

Takkar is about the transformation that both the lead characters undergo.

Guna finds a way to overcome his fear and hit back at his opponents. He also realises that happiness and money are two independent entities and that one doesn’t need money to be happy.

Lucky initially has a very negative opinion of men and marriage, thanks to her dad (director Arun Vaidhyanathan) and the man her dad is trying to get her married to. But eventually, she falls in love.

How both these characters influence one another and bring about a change in their belief systems is what Takkar is all about.

Weak points.

takkar tamil

A poster of ‘Takkar’. (Twitter)

The problem with Takkar is that its plot lacks credibility. It does not have anything substantial to offer to you as a viewer and everything in it comes across as being either artificial, exaggerated or superfluous.

The makers — in the hope of delivering a commercial entertainer with a good measure of action, romance and comedy — have ended up delivering a film that serves neither of the three in a convincing manner.

The action sequences, like in quite a few other commercial films, seem to have forcefully fit into the plot to raise the stature of the hero’s character in the film.

The romantic portions, for the most part, appear to be of a transactional nature.

The comedy, which is served to viewers primarily through Yogi Babu’s character, hardly works.

The makers don’t seem to have realised that in their urge to present a story that is substantially different, they have eventually gone a full circle and ended up taking the road often taken.

In other words, Takkar is the same-old story of a rich girl falling madly in love with a poor boy.

Performances.

The film has some decent performances coming from its lead pair —Siddharth and Divyansha.

Bollywood actor Abimanyu Singh, as the leader of a kidnapping gang, also does his bit.

But despite all of this, Takkar comes across as an insipid, boring, exaggerated run-of-the-mill romantic drama.

Takkar Movie Review:  Erratic tonal shifts bulldoze this almost-there romance

Takkar Movie Review:  Erratic tonal shifts bulldoze this almost-there romance

Takkar loosely translates to awesome, but it has very less relevance to Karthik G Krish's sophomore film, which narrates the story of two losers running for and away from life. While Gunasekaran (a) Guns is chased by poverty, helplessness, and a Chinese gang, Mahalakshmi (a) Lucky is hunted by emptiness and a gang of kidnappers. Considering the complexities surrounding each of them, titling the film Makkar perhaps would have made more sense. Their paths converge only close to the interval marking the beginning of the better part of the film.

Cast:  Siddharth, Divyansha Kaushik, Abhimanyu Singh, RJ Vigneshkanth Director: Karthik G Krish

Until then, the focus is majorly on the series of unfortunate events in the life of Gunasekaran. Starting from getting a messy beard trim from a distracted hairdresser to getting almost killed by a violent boss who cusses him to eat crap, quite literally, Guns only goes through the worst of the worst, day after day. Ideally, whenever a protagonist goes through such hardships in a masala entertainer, we know a cathartic elevation is on the way. Director Karthik plants a similar sequence in Takkar , where Siddharth's Guns enters a den of gangsters. He aims to create gratifying, whistle-worthy moments with this stretch, but they fall flat due to the shallow writing. The preceding shaming episodes of Guns are so ruthless that we needed something extraordinary in the transformation scene to compensate for it. But, alas! The tonal shifts, which were minor inconveniences till then, start becoming major roadblocks and prevent us from even remotely connecting with the film.

On several occasions, Takkar reminds us of other films with similar plot points like 10 Endrathukulla , Jiivi and Paiyaa . But here, lack of novelty isn't our primary concern as Karthik keeps us squirming with incessant, sub-standard attempts at comedy. For the nth time, Yogi Babu gets body shamed in the guise of humour, and Abhimanyu Singh tries to channelise his inner Goundamani and beats up his sidekicks even for the simplest of all reasons. Munishkanth makes a forgettable cameo only to deliver a slew of random counters, and none of these evoke an iota of laughter. But what actually leaves the audience in splits was a rather serious dialogue Lucky delivers post her breakup to a chauffeur: "I have changed my keep, you can keep my change."

In the final act, the film enters into serious territory, where the emotions and performances are on point and we are almost convinced that this stretch can make up for the unamusing parts. But Karthik's urge to infuse humour kicks in and we get a 'comical' exchange between a main character who is held hostage and Guns who can save him. In the very next scene, we see the character being stripped and tortured, and by this point, it becomes impossible to stomach the multiple personality disorder of the screenplay by then.

The saving graces of the film have to be the earnest performances of the lead pair. Apart from being good-looking, Siddharth and Divyansha are compelling and they share a great chemistry on-screen. Though it's almost love at first sight, they sell their 'it's complicated' quite effectively and we really wish that the film just stuck to their romance without any side tracks.

Divyansha's expressions and lip-sync game are on point and she aces the role as the mysterious girl recovering from bad parenting. Incidentally, she played a similar role in Michael , and I just hope she doesn't get trapped in this stereotype. As I walked out of the hall I felt bad for the lead actors as their efforts go for a toss because of the haphazard writing. They certainly deserved better, and so do we.

Siddharth on shooting for actioner Takkar: ‘I was in tons and tons of pain’

Siddharth's bilingual film takkar is touted to be an out-and-out actioner, a new genre for the actor..

takkar movie review tamil

Siddharth’s Tamil-Telugu bilingual Takkar hit screens on Friday and the actor is keen to see the response the film gets. Besides the fact that he has entered the genre of action thrillers for the first time, Siddharth is also eager to see how the audience responds to his action scenes, something that left him in intense physical pain during the shoot.

Siddharth is known for his romantic boy-next-door roles but for him to take on a completely different character meant undergoing several lifestyle changes. In this interview with indianexpress.com , the actor shares that one of the strongest memories from shooting for Takkar is the pain his body experienced.

takkar movie review tamil

“Every film will leave you with some memories, some nostalgia, some sense of sight, sound and smell which you will always take away with you,” says Siddharth as he adds, “During Takkar, it was what I was feeling when I was shooting the film. I did 30 plus call sheets of action in the film and when you are doing that much action, for that I have to change my physique, I had to work out and I don’t always enjoy working out. I had to bulk up for this film and I am much more muscular and larger in this film than I am,” shares the actor, whose character in the film is named Kunj.

Siddharth, whose work is known in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema, further decodes his schedule during the shoot of the film. He says, “So for this film, I had to fight a lot of other people and there was a lot of training involved. So, I was in a lot of pain. I know action heroes shouldn’t feel it but I was in tons and tons of pain because I had also gone through a shoulder surgery at that time and was recovering from it and doing rehab on one side and stunts on the other side.” He quips, “All not what the doctor had ordered at all!”

On a serious note, while the actor praises the Vietnamese stunt crew that supported him through a very important and intense scene in the film, he also remembers wincing in pain the next day.

Festive offer

“They had some brilliant martial artists. So, it was a great experience but I would go back home in tons and tons of pain and then in the morning the ‘aiyyooss’ and ‘ammaas’ were there. So, for me the strong memory from Takkar was what pain I used to be in those days. So, they say no pain no gain and I don’t think any film deserves that idiom more than Takkar. I am excited to see that translate to claps and whistles. It is the reason why you do these sequences,” shares the actor.

While Takkar has been shot keeping in the mind the sensibilities of Telugu and Tamil audiences, Siddharth is focused on entertaining everyone who is coming to see him in theatres.

“I don’t think there is a difference in sensibilities. The audience just wants to enjoy the cinema. All films are culturally rooted and presented. So for my audience in Telugu, the film is happening in Telugu states and for Tamil the film is happening in Tamil Nadu . So, it’s not that the film is happening in one geographical location and then you translate into multiple languages. So as far as Telugu audience is concerned, they are watching a Telugu film and Tamil audience is watching a Tamil film.

“The way the character has been written is very universal, so that there is the same kind of impact in both places. Of course, audiences will clap louder depending upon the theatre in a city. So that’s when something becomes ‘mass’ and I have not experienced that with my films. This film has a lot of clap moments and energetic highs. So that’s gonna be fun to watch in Tamil and Telugu,” he says.

Average writing overshadows siddharth's earnest performance.

Takkar might work for a few who want to watch an entertainer with nothing to take back home. But otherwise, it's a very average watch. (more)

A fantastic Siddharth gets wasted in this middling mishmash of action and romance

On the flip side, this is also the same film in which we have a sensible hero playing a character who, being stuck in the middle of nowhere, wears his female friends clothes and lets her apply make-up on him. Its commendable on Siddharths part to have shown how a man, or a hero, with a secure m... (more)

Takkar Review: Lousy and Boring

Takkar Review: Lousy and Boring

Movie: Takkar Rating: 1/5 Banner: People Media Factory, Abhishek Agarwal Arts Cast: Siddharth, Divyansha, Abhimanyu Singh, Yogi Babu, Munishkanth, RJ Vigneshkanth and others Dialogues: Hanu Ravuri Music: Nivas K Prasanna Director of Photography: Vanchinathan Editor: GA Gowtham Art Director: Udaya Kumar K Stunts Co-Producer: Vivek Kuchibotla Producers: TG Vishwaprasad, Abhishek Agarwal Written and Directed by: Karthik G Krish Release Date: June 09, 2023

Siddharth has been attempting to break away from his lover-boy image. He claimed that he would establish a new image with "Takkar." The film's release in Telugu by not just one, but two major Tollywood production houses generated curiosity.

Let's assess its strengths and weaknesses.

Story: Gunasekhar (Siddharth) harbors aspirations of becoming wealthy. He arrives in Vizag in search of stable employment but faces humiliation while doing odd jobs. Eventually, he secures a well-paying and respectable position as a cab driver.

Meanwhile, Gunasekhar develops feelings for Lucky (Divyansha Kaushik), a super-rich girl who has grown weary of her affluent lifestyle. Lucky also claims to be a feminist. However, her life takes a turn when she is kidnapped by a mafia gang seeking ransom from her father, and she is confined in the car's trunk.

Coincidentally, Gunasekhar encounters the same mafia gang and, after a brief altercation, manages to steal the car with Lucky trapped inside. Thus begins the journey of Gunasekhar and Lucky as they attempt to escape the clutches of the mafia gang. Will their time on the run lead to love blossoming between them?

Artistes’ Performances: Siddharth looks the same as he always does, with the exception of his beard style. He has the same boyish charm, despite his attempts to be a "mass hero." He appears completely unfit for the role.

Divyansha Kaushik's role is poorly written, but she is the film's best looking aspect because she is charming and provides some eye candy while the proceedings are dull and boring.

Yogi Babu's comedy falls flat. As the villain, Abhimanyu Singh plays it in his usual manner.

Technical Excellence: The film has good production and technical value. The cinematography, in particular, is neat. The action stunts are ridiculous. The writing is awfully sloppy and incoherent. Other than one song, none of them work.

Highlights: Nothing

Drawback: Sloppy writing Poor direction and narrative skills Outdated comedy track Never ending runtime

Analysis In Hindi, "takkar" means "collusion." In Tamil, it commonly refers to winning a game in a direct fight. The hero in Siddharth's "Takkar" faces two challenges: fighting a mafia gang and engaging in a love game with the heroine. However, the film is not as simple as described.

"Takkar," directed by Karthik G Krish, is one of the messiest films we have seen in recent years. There is no coherence in the script or the hero's journey. Adding a mishmash of sequences and strange characters does not bring any novelty.

Siddharth plays a cab driver, and the cab (a Benz car) is owned by a Chinese-looking man who always speaks to Siddharth while performing Seershanam. There is no explanation for why these scenes are shown or the significance of this Chinese-looking man in the story.

Then there's the main villain, involved in human trafficking. He deals with international mafia leaders in one sequence, but in the next, he interacts with comedian Yogi Babu and acts like a buffoon for the entire second half.

Most films nowadays are a huge disappointment after the intermission. However, "Takkar" is sloppy from the beginning. It bores us to death in both halves of the film.

The road trip romance, with some daring scenes and songs, also falls flat. It is strange why People Media Factory and Abhishek Agarwal purchased the Telugu rights to this film. What prompted them to buy it?

Overall, "Takkar" is a lackluster effort. It is completely forgettable fare that will leave you with nothing but a headache. Watching "Takkar" will make you feel faint (chakkar).

Bottom line: Chakkar!
