A day in the life:

Here’s an example of what a "day in the life" might look like for a full-time student on their way to becoming an SLP at Baylor.

6:00am: Wake up and greet the day. Finish up some of your asynchronous coursework before heading out the door.

8:00am : Clock in at your clinical practicum. Today, you’re working with elementary-aged children with speech disorders.

9:00–12:00pm : Work one-on-one with patients while your SLP clinical educator guides and oversees your progress.

12:00–1:00pm : Break for lunch and check in on the groupchat you started with your classmates. You find out one has just accepted a job offer! Congrats all around.

1:00–5:00pm : While working with a patient, you apply an exercise from last week’s lecture on motor speech disorders.

6:00pm : Have dinner at home with family before studying for an upcoming quiz.

7:00–9:00pm : Log in to your online Voice Pathology course.

Become an SLP online with 45 credit hours of live classes you can take from home. Each expert-led course combines live lectures and group work to prepare you for the Praxis exam.

Each clinical practicum provides you real-world experience in a different setting: private practice, home health, and education. Rotations are 24-36 hours per week for 13 weeks.

 Get the experience you need to earn your license. We place you in a clinical SLP experience within 100 miles of where you live. This rotation is 35–40 hours per week for 13 weeks.

Program Tracks Designed for You

Hold a CSD bachelor’s degree or have completed required post-baccalaureate work in the speech field within the last five years.

Hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-CSD major and have not completed introductory courses in speech, language, and hearing; these applicants must complete leveling courses (available through the Baylor program) before starting graduate coursework.

Program Details

In order to apply to Baylor's online speech-language pathology graduate program, you must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. A minimum uUndergraduate GPA of 3.2 (based on 4.0 scale) is required. However, a GPA of 3.4 or higher is strongly recommended. Undergraduate courses in Biology, Physics OR Chemistry, Social Science, and Statistics should be completed prior to beginning the program. Speech@NYU is the online SLP master’s program offered by the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders.  It is designed for aspiring speech-language pathologists who want the flexibility to pursue fulfilling careers in a variety of settings.

The online modality of the SLP master’s program is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and prepares you to work toward speech-language pathology certification. The curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice and enables you to provide person-centered care for diverse populations with communication and swallowing disorders.

Clinical Training in the Online Master’s in Speech Pathology

In the speech-language pathology program, you are assigned a dedicated placement specialist who will work with you to find NYU Steinhardt faculty-approved clinical field placement sites in or near your community.

With Speech@NYU, you will receive the in-depth training to provide forward-thinking, culturally competent care to clients of all ages without having to relocate.

As a student, you will complete a five-part sequence of on-campus clinical practicum and clinical field placement experiences at your placement site.

  • Practicum I (Pre-Clinic and Immersion)
  • Practicum II (Diagnostic Assessment and Immersion)
  • Clinical Field Placement III (Treatment)
  • Clinical Field Placement IV (Pediatrics)
  • Clinical Field Placement V (Adults)

Clinical Immersions

Before beginning field placements, you will attend two immersions to help adequately prepare you to conduct clinical diagnostics in speech pathology and work more independently in your clinical experiences.

During these immersions, you will:

  • Provide language, hearing, cognitive, and/or swallowing screens to diverse communities.
  • Receive dedicated supervision and receive on-the-spot feedback from speech-language pathologists.
  • Participate in specialized workshops relating to topics such as language screening, instrumental assessment of voice disorders, dysphagia screening, and aphasia treatment.

Earn Your Online SLP Master’s Degree Full Time or Part Time

You have the flexibility to pursue your SLP graduate degree  full time or part time based on your scheduling needs . You can earn your master’s in speech-language pathology in as few as six or seven terms attending full time, or set a slower pace by attending part time until your field placement begins.

An academic advisor will work with you to choose the plan of study that is the best fit for your lifestyle while ensuring you continue to make appropriate academic progress.

Academic, Placement, and Career Support

As an online SLP student, you will  have access to the same resources as on-campus students , including the NYU Bobst Library, Wellness Exchange, Writing Center, and Wasserman Center for Career Development, which provides one-on-one coaching, webinars, and virtual career fairs to help you in your speech pathologist career.

In addition to continuous mentorship from faculty, you’ll also work with field placement specialists, academic advisors, and a technology support team to ensure your success as a Speech@NYU student.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Students in both the on-campus and online modalities of the SLP master’s program have the opportunity to complete a  study abroad program in countries like Sweden or Ghana  to study communication disorders from a cross-cultural perspective.

The program includes participating in local site visits, studying with local guest lecturers, and immersing yourself in a linguistically and culturally distinct setting.

Speech@NYU’s curriculum prepares you to become a well-rounded speech-language pathologist and treat clients with a variety of communication disorders across the life span.

The  NYU Steinhardt Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders  (CSD) aims to understand, assess, and treat speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders in people of all ages.

Applications for admission to our clinical programs (AuD, MS-SLP) require materials to be sent both via the Centralized Application Service for Communication Science & Disorders (CSDCAS) and via Purdue’s online systems.

Prerequisite Courses for MS-SLP Clinical Degree

Minimum undergraduate course requirements.

Students who plan to achieve professional clinical certification through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in Speech-Language Pathology will be expected to take all of the following prerequisite undergraduate courses prior to the beginning of the graduate program.

  • 1 course in normal anatomy & physiology for speech and hearing
  • 1 course in acoustics or speech science
  • 1 course in normal language development
  • 1 course in aural rehabilitation other than sign language
  • 1 course in hearing disorders and hearing evaluation
  • 1 course in phonetics
  • 1 course in biological sciences
  • 1 course in physical sciences
  • 1 course in behavioral/social sciences
  • 1 course in statistics covering at least t-tests, analyses of variance, regression (correlation) and non-parametric statistics (e.g., chi-square). This should be a stand-alone course in statistics. Research methodology courses may not be used. The courses offered at Purdue University that are acceptable are: STAT 30100, STAT 50100, STAT 50300, PSY 50000, and SOC 38200. Other Purdue courses and all transfer courses must be approved by the Graduate Committee. AP credit cannot be used to meet the statistics requirement.

Prerequisite Students

We accept students with a bachelor’s degree in other areas. We consider this type of student a prerequisite applicant. Students accepted into the prerequisite program will take an extra year to complete. All applicants are evaluated equally regardless of their degree area. Students with bachelor’s degrees in other areas may also take the prerequisite courses prior to applying to our program.

Completion of 25 Observation Hours

Graduate students do not participate in a clinical practicum until they have completed 25 clock hours of ASHA certified, supervised guided observation. Therefore, students entering the MS-SLHS clinical program must complete 25 clock hours of ASHA certified, supervised guided observation prior to the beginning of the program. These guided observation hours must be accumulated through observation of evaluation and treatment of children and adults with disorders of speech, language, swallowing, or hearing.  The guided observation experience must be signed by a Speech-Language Pathologist or Audiologist with current certification (CCC-SLP or CCC-A) status. For students who did not complete 25 clock hours of observation, an online option will be offered, to be taken by the students during the summer before they begin the graduate program. Students should reach out to the Director of Clinical Education as soon as possible.

Applications for International Students

Please note, the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences has higher minimum requirements for English language proficiency for a clinical degree than the Purdue University Graduate School. Also, SLHS does not waive this requirement even if you have earned a degree within the past 24 months from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction.

To be eligible for admission into the clinical programs, or to be eligible for departmental funding as a PhD student (unless other arrangements are made with the students’ PhD supervisor) all international applicants must meet the higher department standards.

English proficiency test scores are required of all international applicants whose first language is not English.

TOEFL Ibt: a minimum total score of 100 with minimum individual scores of 28 for speaking; 22 for writing; 22 for listening; and 22 for reading.

IELTS: a minimum score of 7.5 with no single band score lower than 7.0. International transcripts must be uploaded or submitted in their original form and in translation, along with copies of any diplomas awarded. Please send any paper transcripts to the Graduate Program Secretary .

Chenell Loudermill, PhD, CCC-SLP, has nearly twenty years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist, thirteen of which were obtained working as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the public schools before moving to higher education.

Master of science in speech-language pathology.

The  Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) is administered through Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The M.S.-SLP program provides academic and clinical education leading to the Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

The program spans two academic years (20 to 24 months). The length of the program depends upon the student’s academic background. The program covers at least five semesters, including the summer session following the first calendar year of full-time study. Students matriculating without a background in communication sciences and disorders will require an extra semester.

Throughout the program, a variety of clinical training venues are available within the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences, the Monroe Carrell, Jr. Children’s Hospital, the Vanderbilt University Hospital, and off-campus. The M.S.-SLP program culminates in a ten-week clinical or research externship at a site of the student’s choosing.

The curriculum and clinical practica exceed the standards set by the Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Specialty training tracks and elective courses are available to eligible students who have career interests with specialized populations (i.e., children with severe to profound hearing loss, autism spectrum disorders, feeding and swallowing disorders, school-aged language-literacy disorders). Interested students have the option of conducting a research project leading toward a master’s thesis.

Students with academic backgrounds in communication sciences and disorders and related professions, such as biomedical sciences, psychology, counseling, education, and psycholinguistics are encouraged to apply.  Applicants for admission must possess GRE scores consistent with Vanderbilt University’s graduate admission standards; an exemplary record of academic achievement and scholarship, a commitment to professionalism, perseverance, and exceptional organizational and time management skills.

What Is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-language pathology is a specialized area of health care that deals with human communication science and disorders. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) specialize in the prevention, identification, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of swallowing, speech, and communication disorders. These disorders can be due to a variety of conditions including autism, brain injury, stroke, or cleft palate.

Speech-language pathologists (sometimes also called speech therapists) work with patients of all ages to improve their quality of life. They evaluate and treat children and adults who are unable to produce speech correctly or fluently, or have problems with their voice. Speech-language pathologists also help individuals who have difficulty with receptive language (understanding others) or expressive language (sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings). Finally, SLPs work with children and adults who have difficulty swallowing food or liquid.

The mission of the program in Speech-Language Pathology is to improve the lives of individuals with cognitive-linguistic, communication, and swallowing/feeding disorders by offering students the academic, research, and clinical foundations needed to provide evidence-based clinical services to diverse populations, utilizing current best practices.

About the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center graduate speech and language pathology program is an academically rigorous and comprehensive program recognized for its excellence in preparing speech pathologists who excel in their profession.

In addition to the academic coursework, over the course of the two-year program, you will gain experience in the university clinic and at least two other settings. Many clinical opportunities are available in the Lubbock community, but students can also participate in externships in other Texas cities and across the country. Certification As a Speech-Language Pathologist

Although specific licensure requirements vary by state, graduation from an accredited program is required for certification as a speech-language pathologist. Certification is granted by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and includes having a passing score on the national Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology.

  • For the past sixteen academic years, TTUHSC students in the Speech-Language Pathology program had a 100% pass rate on the Praxis Exam in Speech-Language Pathology.

Our MS in Speech-Language Pathology offers an in-depth study of communication disorders with an emphasis on articulation and phonological disorders, fluency disorders (stuttering), augmentative and alternative communication, voice disorders, dysphagia (swallowing disorders), neurogenic communication disorders (aphasia, dementia), hearing disorders, language disorders, social aspects of communication, cognitive aspects of communication.

Courses and clinical opportunities place a high priority on assessment and intervention within an evidence-based, ethical, and multicultural framework. Upon completion of the master's degree, students are eligible to apply for certification with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, California state licensure, and California Speech Language Hearing Services credential.

  • For applicants who come from a country where English is not the primary language and do not possess a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary institution where English is the principal language of instruction, a higher English-language proficiency (ELP) test score is required as indicated on the Graduate Program Test Requirement webpage.

  • Applicants who will have completed all program prerequisites before program start date may apply to the two-year MS-SLP program. The two-year program is appropriate for applicants who completed an undergraduate or post-baccalaureate program in communication disorders that meet all the prerequisites.
  • Applicants who will not have completed all program prerequisites before program start date should consider applying to the three-year extended MS-SLP program. The extended program is appropriate for applicants who majored in field of study other than communication disorders (i.e. out-of-field student; OFS). A culminating experience is required for graduation and students have two options.

  • Thesis . Students can conduct a research project under the advisement of a faculty member. Students electing to complete a thesis will enroll in thesis for three credits during Fall semester of the second year; OR
  • Comprehensive exam . Students can successfully complete the comprehensive examination/project - also known as “comps” - during their final semester.

Clinical practica occur in a variety of settings, including our Kay Armstead Center for Communication Disorders . Students have clinical opportunities with infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, and elders in a variety of settings, including public, private, and charter schools (preschool, elementary, middle, high schools), rehabilitation agencies, private practices, skilled nursing facilities, and hospitals.

Candidates for the Master’s degree must accumulate a minimum of 375 clock hours in a supervised clinical practicum in three distinctively different settings and 25 hours of guided observation with an ASHA certified clinician.

The California Department of Managed Health Care has a longstanding agreement in place with United HealthCare of California going back to 2013 in which the insurer agrees to cover speech therapy services for members. That year, thousands of families in California gained access to affordable speech therapy services, and the demand for licensed SLPs in the state has been increasing rapidly ever since. This is part of a wider trend that is seeing these vital services being made more accessible through early intervention at the Pre-K level and in the state’s public schools.

In fact, the State of California Employment Development Department expects to see a 17% increase in the number of SLPs in the state during the ten-year period leading up to 2024, a rate of growth that will create 470 new SLP careers each year.

SLP licensing in California is handled through the Department of Consumer Affairs Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board . Follow these steps to earn your SLP license and become a speech therapist in California:

Step 1. Earn a Master’s Degree in Speech Therapy (Speech-Language Pathology)

To meet California Board requirements, your master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology must be through a Board-approved school and consist of no less than 60 semester units and a practicum involving 300 hours of supervised clinical practice.

ASHA-accredited online programs offer a convenient and flexible alternative to campus-based study for working students. These programs are highly respected by employers and licensing authorities nationwide, offering the same level of rigor as campus-based programs, while including the ability to complete practicum hours in approved clinics and hospitals located near you.

As of 2016, there are sixteen accredited SLP graduate programs available at campus locations in California.

Prerequisites and Admissions Requirements

If the bachelor’s degree you hold is in communicative sciences and disorders, you’ll be able to start your graduate coursework directly. However, if you have an unrelated bachelor’s degree, you’ll need to complete prerequisite courses that are fundamental to SLP graduate coursework.

To be eligible for ASHA’s CCC-SLP certification , you’ll need to complete 12 units of coursework in social/behavioral science, biological science, physical science and statistics, which is covered in the core curriculum listed above.

Your master’s program would also involve supervised clinical experiences through a practicum. The practicum must be completed during your graduate studies and will allow you to gain experience in assessing and treating patients. In California, you’ll need to complete a 300-hours supervised clinical practicum in three different clinical settings to qualify for licensure.

Step 2. Gain 36 Weeks of Post-Graduate Experience Through a Clinical Fellowship Program

In California, you’ll need to complete 36 weeks of full-time (or 72 weeks of part-time) supervised professional experience under a temporary license issued by the Board.

To apply for a temporary license, you’ll have to fill out the Temporary License Application . With the license application, you’ll need to include:

  • Fingerprints from Livescan
  • Transcripts from your graduate program
  • Proof of completion of clinical practicum hours during your graduate program
  • National exam score
  • Professional experience verification detailing who you will work for

Step 3. Pass the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology Examination

Next, you’ll register online through Praxis for the Speech-Language Pathology Exam, a requirement for licensure in California

You’ll need to score a 162 to pass the national exam.

The computer-based test consists of 132 questions that are to be completed over 150 minutes. The questions fall into the following categories:

Voluntary CCC-SLP Credentialing Through ASHA

Once you’ve passed the national exam, you are eligible to apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) credential through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The credential is NOT a requirement for state licensure, but the state of California does recognize those that hold the credential as meeting all state licensing requirements.

It usually takes about six weeks for the application to be processed and to receive your credential. Upon receiving the credential, you can move forward in the licensing process.

Step 4. Apply for Licensing and Begin Your Career as a Speech-Language Pathologist in California

Once you’ve received your results from the national exam, you’ll be eligible to apply for licensure through the California Board.

As a newly-licensed SLP, you may choose to continue working for the clinic that provided your required professional experience.

You’ll need to contact the supervisor of your clinical fellowship to inquire about job openings. Clinics may choose to hire SLPs who have worked under them through a clinical fellowship because they’ve likely already established relationships with patients, families of patients, and staff members.

Start an Independent Practice or Partnership

In California, you may begin an independent practice once you’re licensed as an SLP. Independent practitioners enjoy a high degree of flexibility and the ability to work with specific patient population groups like children or the elderly.

Step 5. Keep Your License Current and Complete Continuing Education Requirements

You must renew your California SLP license every two years by completing a renewal form and submitting it to the Board.

To renew, you must submit proof of 24 hours of continuing education completed through approved providers, with the exception of your first renewal, during which you will only have to complete 12 hours of CE.

The following restrictions apply to CE hours:

  • Minimum of 20 hours must be directly relevant to the scope of practice of speech-language pathology or audiology.
  • Maximum of 6 hours may be in self-study courses.
  • Maximum of 4 hours may be taken from related courses and/or indirect client care courses.
  • No more than 8 hours may be combined between self-study and related/client care courses

As of 2020,  speech-language pathologists  in California earned an average salary of $95,570 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, which comes to nearly $46 an hour. More experienced SLPs with salaries in the top 25% earned $112,320 that year, or $54 an hour, while the highest paid SLPs in California in the top 10% earned more than $130,110, which works out to more than $62.50 an hour.

California’s SLPs were counted among the highest paid in the country in 2020, ranking number five nationally for the highest average SLP salary that year.

The California Employment Development Department expects the number of jobs for speech-language pathologists to increase by 29% in the ten-year period leading up to 2028. This is an almost unheard-of level of growth that is expected to contribute to more 1,400 SLP jobs becoming available in California each year.

California  is already home to more than 14,600 SLPs as of 2020, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Not surprisingly, that places California in the number on spot with the highest employment level for SLPs in the nation. Students complete four semesters of clinical experience. In their first semester of Clinic (Clinic 1), students engage in rich clinical experiences under the guidance of highly skilled clinic supervisors in the Speech-Language and Hearing Center, housed in the state-of-the art Behrakis Health Sciences Building. Individuals of all ages from surrounding communities come to the Center for diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Generally, in Clinics 2-4, students work multiple days a week, off-campus, with speech-language pathologists as student clinicians in community-based hospitals, outpatient clinics, educational institutions, and other settings.

Consistent with ASHA guidelines, both on-campus and off-campus clinical assignments provide students with hands-on experience evaluating and/or treating children and adults with a variety of diagnoses, disorders, and impairments such as language, cognitive-linguistic, and swallowing disorders. While many of our external clinical sites are accessible by public transportation, not all are. Consequently, it is necessary for students to have access to a car during the semesters that they are enrolled in Clinics 2-4.

Our Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology (MS-SLP) program provides an academic and clinical professional education to prepare you as a clinician working in educational and medical settings.

We offer coursework leading to the Master of Arts or Master of Science degrees in Speech-Language Pathology and a Doctor of Audiology degree. In addition, completing required coursework, laboratory training and clinical practicum experiences qualify you for national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and state licensure.

About Our Program

UNT’s clinically focused M.S. program offers outstanding hands-on experience to prepare you for work as a practitioner. Along with the on-campus practicum at the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, offsite practicum opportunities are available at more than 100 sites in the region. Sites include hospitals, nursing homes, rehab centers and public schools administering hearing screenings and raising hearing loss awareness. All practicum requirements are closely monitored by a clinical supervisor. Clinical competencies are reviewed each semester with the clinical supervisor. Academic knowledge and clinical competency are also studied through formative and summative assessments at different stages of the programs.

Our students have a 100 percent pass rate on the AHSA Praxis Exam and more than 90% of graduates are employed in the field of Speech-Language Pathology within one year of graduation. For more details on our student outcomes, see our   program statistics page.

Application Part 1 (Toulouse Graduate School application)

Complete the UNT Graduate Application for Fall 2024 for the  Toulouse Graduate School  via  ApplyTexas . Designate Speech-Language Pathology as your intended major field.

When your ApplyTexas application is complete and submitted, you will receive communication from the UNT Toulouse Graduate School indicating that your application has been received and providing you with your UNT ID number ( not  the same as your application number from ApplyTexas), as well as instructions for setting up access to your  MyUNT Portal . Please note that this process typically takes 1 to 2 business days after submission of your application. If you submitted your application via ApplyTexas more than 2 business days ago and have not received this information, please contact the Toulouse Graduate School at (940) 565-2383 or  [email protected]  for assistance.

Please arrange for all official transcripts from all universities attended (both undergraduate and graduate transcripts, including community college transcripts) to be sent directly to:

A completed Clinical Questions Form is required for all applicants. This form is designed to assess your clinical knowledge through responses to a series of prompts. The three prompts that applicants are required to respond to are:

  • What is your primary goal for applying to the Speech Language Pathology graduate program at UNT?   How have you prepared to meet this goal?  Have you explored, been exposed to, or have experience in the field of speech-language pathology and if so, how? 
  • Describe an interest of yours where you are part of a larger community or group. How long have you been involved? How have you contributed to this group? What have you learned from your participation?
  • Describe a challenging situation you have faced. How did you deal with the situation? Did you turn to anyone for help?   In hindsight, would you do anything differently?

Please note that your responses to the Clinical Questions prompt should be both complete and concise. Prompt responses have a 500 word limit per question.  Click this link  for the document.  Once completed, submissions must be uploaded to your  MyUNT Portal  by clicking on “To Do’s”, then “Clinical Questions” then “Add attachment” and click save.

When all of the application materials listed above are received, you will receive communication from the UNT Toulouse Graduate School indicating that this portion of your application is complete and that your application has been forwarded to the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Department for review. Application Part 2 (departmental application components)

Departmental Component: Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required for all applicants. It is preferred that these recommendations be written and sent by individuals who are familiar with your academic background and who can attest to your aptitude for challenging graduate-level academic work, or by speech-language pathologists who have supervised you in a clinical environment. The number of recommendations from individuals outside of academia (e.g. employers, community leaders) should be kept to a minimum, and they may be weighted differently based on their relevance to academic-specific information.

Letters of recommendation should be submitted directly by the recommender, to  UNT M.S. SLP Recommendation submission link .  Please note that your recommender will need your full name and email address in order to submit the recommendation. Be sure that you provide that information, along with the submission link, to your recommenders.

All departmental application materials must be received on or before the January 8, 2024 application deadline date to be considered.

Incomplete application portfolios are not reviewed by the admissions committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all elements of the application have been received by UNT. Applicants should check their application status and Tasks list of required Departmental application components via the  MyUNT Portal . The Tasks list will typically be updated within 1 to 3 business days of receiving your materials. Frequently Asked Questions

The Masters of Science program can typically be completed in 5 academic terms (i.e. Fall 1, Spring 1, Summer, Fall 2, Spring 2) if all CSD coursework prerequisites have been met prior to admission.

UNT's clinically focused program is a traditional face-to-face program, and we do not offer online coursework at this time.

Tours of the department and its clinical facilities are available for applicants to the Master’s Degree Program in Speech-Language Pathology. Department tours are led by current UNT ASLP graduate students. Tours are offered during the year depending on availability and are by appointment only.

Please   send an e-mail   if you wish to make an appointment for a departmental tour. Applicants may also arrange for a UNT campus tour through the   UNT Campus Tours Office.

All applicants to the UNT Master's Program in Speech-Language Pathology who submit each required component of their graduate application by the stated application deadline are automatically considered for competitive departmental assistantship awards. An assistantship application is necessary to be hired for a competitive departmental assistantship award. The department will invite individual applicants to apply on an as-needed basis.

All applicants are advised to go to   UNT's Eagle Scholarship Portal   ( more information can be found here ) to be considered for a variety of competitive scholarships offered by the university and the department. All applicants are also strongly advised to work with their undergraduate advisor to identify sources of extramural scholarship, loan, and grant support for which the applicant can apply, prior to the start of graduate school. Many of these extramural funding mechanisms have application deadlines well in advance of the anticipated date of fall matriculation into the graduate program.

Individuals from any undergraduate field of study may apply to the Master of Science Degree Program in Speech-Language Pathology. However, applicants whose Bachelor's Degree is in a field outside Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology must complete prerequisite coursework.  See Leveling / Out-of-Field Information  for details.

Our Admissions Committee evaluates applicants holistically, considering all aspects of an applicant's profile in making the best admissions decisions for our incoming cohort. As such, there is no set minimum for application data such as GPA or GRE. The UNT M.S. SLP program is a competitive admissions program and you can find more information on the applicant profile of admitted classes on our  program statistics page .

Admission to the Master’s Degree Program in Speech-Language Pathology is one time per year in the Fall. All application materials must be received on or before the application deadline date to be considered. Incomplete application portfolios are not reviewed by the admissions committee. Human communication sciences clinic in action

Course description

This accredited course qualifies you to practise as a speech and language therapist in a range of settings, including schools, hospitals, care homes, nurseries and clinics. 

You will study a wide variety of difficulties that adults and children can have with communicating and/or eating, drinking and swallowing. Topics range from anatomy and physiology, and their relationship with speech and language pathology, to the psychological and sociological factors that can affect communication.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to assess an individual’s communication or eating, drinking and swallowing difficulty, identify suitable interventions and manage their progress. You’ll work closely with service users, family members, carers and related professionals to support the people you are working with. You will also complete pre-registration eating, drinking and swallowing competencies .

This training will be put into practice and developed through a series of clinical placements, both within the University of Sheffield’s in-house speech and language therapy clinic and in a variety of health and education settings.

The course is led by a supportive team of clinical and research specialists, including speech and language therapists, psychologists, audiologists, linguists, information technologists, and medical practitioners. The University is a world-leading centre of research, and our teams will embed the latest research into your teaching to enable you to make evidence-based decisions in future practice.

Study days for part-time students vary by semester. The standard pattern is given below. There may be circumstances during the course where study days differ from this, but we will inform you in good time and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.

You will learn through lectures, workshops, tutorials, supervised clinical placements and self-directed learning. We use a case-based and inquiry-based approach, as well as small-group teaching, to give you an interactive learning experience.

You’ll put your newly acquired knowledge into practice in clinical placements throughout the programme, starting from the very first semester. 

During semesters one and two, placements run alongside teaching, so that you can link the topics you are studying to clinical practice. You will then spend part of the summer each year on clinical placements.

  • Full-time students spend four weeks (20 days) on clinical placement over the summer at the end of level one and five weeks (25 days) in the summer of level two.
  • Part-time students spend 20 days on clinical placement over the summer at the end of level one, then 15 days in the summer of level two and 15 days in the summer of level three.  Summer placements usually take place over three days a week, on the same days of the week as semester two of that year – so you would complete 20 days of placement in the summer of level one over seven weeks, for example. However, these dates can be more flexible over the summer so if a different schedule would be more suitable this can be arranged with your placement provider.

Clinical placements take place across our placement region (including Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Derby and Nottinghamshire). An aspect of travel is therefore expected. 

You will be assessed through exams, coursework, evaluation of your clinical practice and, in your final year, a dissertation and clinical viva.

Your career

Graduates from this course can register with the Health and Care Professions Council and practise as speech and language therapists.

Speech and language therapists are in high demand, and there are plenty of opportunities to specialise in areas such as mental health, stammering, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties, or neurological impairments.

Many of our graduates have gone on to successful careers within NHS trusts, schools, charities, private practices or the justice system. Others choose to go on to further postgraduate study and a research career.

The Philippa Cottam Communication Clinic , which opened in 1993, allows you to gain valuable practical experience during your studies. 

As a speech and language therapy clinic, it supports children and adults with a range of communication difficulties. The clinic’s observation and treatment rooms allow students to work directly with people who have communication difficulties.

Our clinic has a range of features to support your learning, including integrated recording equipment so you can record and watch back your therapy sessions, and two-way mirrors so you can learn from other students' sessions. We also have a comprehensive stock of assessments, intervention resources and therapy equipment for you to practise using.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2:1 undergraduate honours degree in any subject.

IELTS 8 (with 7.5 in each component) or University equivalent.

You should have at least two years' experience working with children.

If you are infected with hepatitis C or HIV, or if you have a disability, medical condition or learning difficulty, including dyslexia, you must disclose this on your UCAS form. All potential students with significant support needs will be individually assessed to ensure that the University is able to support them on the course.

All new students will undergo health screenings known as an Occupational Health Check, which may require an individual assessment. This is to ensure that you meet the fitness to practise standards detailed on the Higher Education Occupational Practitioners (HEOPS) guidance and is in accordance with the Department of Health National Guidelines .

  • discuss how your academic/professional/personal background has prepared you for this postgraduate course. We welcome applicants who have backgrounds in unrelated fields as long as they can demonstrate their interest for, and knowledge about, speech and language therapy
  • clearly describe and reflect on relevant experiences and research you have undertaken to prepare yourself for this programme
  • provide evidence that your personal values and behaviours align with the NHS constitution

Applicants should apply during the application window for the year that they hope to join the course.

Due to the large number of applications we receive, we are unable to provide individual and specific feedback to applicants who are not shortlisted for an interview or who do not receive an offer for a place on the course.

Fees and funding

Fees for 2 years, full-time route.

You'll receive an occupational health screening, immunisations and a DBS check on our professional programmes. These will be covered by your tuition fee. We recommend that you subscribe to the DBS update service within 30 days of your disclosure being issued (which you would need to pay for). You would need to pay for any additional DBS checks that may be required if you do not subscribe to the DBS update service.

Clinical placements are a compulsory element of the degree, which means that there will be an additional expense for travel and accommodation (where applicable).

If you are a UK student you will be able to apply for reimbursement for excess travel expenses and dual accommodation costs for placements from the NHS Learning Support Fund . In order to claim, the total cost of your daily return travel from your normal accommodation to your practice placement site must exceed the cost of your usual daily return travel to university.

If you travel to placement in your own motor vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate insurance cover for all risks associated with its use (i.e. this includes obtaining business use on your insurance policy). This cannot be reimbursed.

For EU and international students the additional placement costs will be self-funded.

Eligible  English-domiciled full-time students  on pre-registration postgraduate healthcare courses can apply for funding from Student Finance England using the undergraduate funding process. You can access this support even if you have received loans to study an undergraduate or postgraduate course before. More information can be found on the government and NHS websites:

As a postgraduate student, you cannot apply for undergraduate scholarships.
