Hospitality management personal statement example 1.

Hospitality Industry is one of the fastest-growing industries, whose great variety makes it very interesting area of working. I have never thought about the fascination and the opportunities which this industry offers until the day I started to work as a tourist manager assistant two years ago.

It was a summer job which was supposed to fill up my free time and increase my budget. I knew I was going to like it because I am keen on meeting new people and visiting tourist destinations, but I did not even suspect how much it would affect me.

As an assistant I was required to help the tourist manager accommodate the guests and organize different kinds of entertainment. This job gave me opportunity to become acquainted with the work of such people as hotel, club and event managers.

I was deeply impressed by their diligence to satisfy every need of their customers. I have realized the responsibility of their profession, but I have also understood how satisfied they are when their clients are happy. I will never forget the face of the tourist manager I worked with when the guests thanked him for the perfect holiday. His face was beaming.

Despite the fact I was only an assistant I felt satisfaction too seeing that the tourists were content with our work. This feeling of gratification and even happiness was the main reason why I decided to study Hospitality management. I am fond of knowing more about each sector of Hospitality industry, in which I see my future.

Every manager needs leadership skills. I think I have gained them by participating in diverse activities. I was one of the students chosen to stage a play for the hundredth anniversary of my primary school.

The most difficult task of the organization of the play was to make the children deliver an inspired performance. Eventually I managed to motivate them not only to be good actors but to enjoy acting itself. It produced positive response.

The passion I have for foreign languages ensured my successful participation in the English Language Festival of my school. In this way I have improved my organizational and presentation skills. Being a member of both Eco-club-Mathew and Interact club, the aim of which is charity, I have gained a sense of team spirit.

As a lover of nature the thing I like to do the most is to go hiking and on picnics. I find the nature of England very attractive and I am looking forward to going there and seeing its beauties. Dancing is my hobby too. I have been dancing a modern ballet for five years. This is my way to relax and keep fit.

I am reliable and positive person, who enjoys challenges and never gives up. I dream of managing a hotel, even a chain of hotels. I realise how great my ambitions are and how hard I must work to achieve them but I think it is most important to have a wish and will.

When one who has strong wishes is self-confident and self-motivated, when he is patient and determined he can fulfill them. I know that besides all these qualities I must also have skills in order to succeed in this industry in which there is such a competition. Studying hospitality management I will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be a prosperous hospitality manager.

In ten years I imagine myself possessing a five-star hotel on the French Riviera and the first thing I should do to achieve my goal is to take this course at your university.

Hospitality Management Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

My decision to follow a career in hospitality management has been prompted by work experience that I undertook during the last two summer holidays. I was initially undecided about my career choices and took the job, as an assistant to an entertainment manager on a cruise ship, to earn some extra cash.

I realised how lucky I was to have such an opportunity and to sail around the Mediterranean for 6 weeks, getting paid but I did not expect to enjoy it so much. The work was hard but the difference between this and the 9-5 Saturday job I have also done in retail could not be more marked. I was outside for much of the day, able to enjoy the sunshine and my work was all done with the intention of giving the people on the cruise their holiday of a lifetime.

Although some of the tasks were quite menial, being able to help put on competitions, run the children’s club and participate in the evening events was fantastic. Playing with the children and mixing with the guests at the dinner dances could not be described as work! I worked closely with the manager and was impressed at his ability to work long hours but still remain cheerful with his staff and the guests at all times. This rubbed off on me and I was surprised at how being enthusiastic and helpful was very satisfying, particularly when people made it obvious that they appreciated what I was doing.

After my first summer on the ship, I was eager to sign up for another and was pleased that they wanted me back. When I got home I started my college course doing A-levels in English, French and Business Studies and started to research university courses that would enable me to pursue a career in hospitality management. Working towards this well-defined goal has motivated me in my studies and I have obtained B grades in all three subjects in my AS levels. My immediate aim is to push at least two of these grades up to n ‘A’  in my A2 exams.

The subjects I chose to study were chosen based on my interest and aptitude and all are highly relevant to a degree in hospitality management. I have become much more fluent and confident in French as my work experience brought me into contact with French guests on the ship who were happy to let me practise. I realise the value of languages in the industry and have started an evening class to learn Spanish. Improving my cooking and presentation skills is also very important and I have combined this with helping my mother to run a cooking and baking skills class for teenage mothers in my local area. Next summer I have lined up an 8-week work placement with another cruise ship and this time I will be a catering assistant, so that will be a big challenge.

I feel that I have the motivation, academic and practical skills to gain a good degree in hospitality management and to then take up a career in the industry. My ambition is to own a hotel one day, or perhaps run my own cruises with a fleet of cruise ships.

Instead of the usual good experiences and deep-rooted interests that lead many students to follow a certain academic path, a number of bad, sometimes terrible experiences have led me to want to follow a career in hospitality.

As a member of a successful school and college orchestra, I had the good fortune to travel around the UK and Europe, taking part in competitions and concerts. It was these experiences that first ignited my interest in the hospitality and tourism industry, and this interest was further enhanced by the subsequent courses I took at college.

I could see how the little things made a big difference, and how good hospitality relied on good management, budgeting and service. To me, hospitality is not just serving breakfast on time, or accommodating requests from customers at the drop of a hat. It is about managing and training staff, ensuring the budget is spent in the right places and minimising the potential for mistakes. These are key factors to running a successful hospitality business in this ever-growing industry.

My part-time job at a local hotel and restaurant further reinforced this belief. I took on many roles, including cleaning, waitressing and helping out on reception, and this enabled me to see how the business worked from a number of angles. I found a major problem to be that senior staff were not aware of the academic and business side to hospitality, and this in turn led to inadequate service. Simple things like ensuring enough staff were available to cover demand for services (for example, bar tending or waitressing) or ensuring training was provided and encouraged for staff to grow and develop seemed to fall by the wayside on occasion. I have already deduced that this is not acceptable when trying to run a successful hospitality business, but I want to go further and learn how to rectify issues like these, and studying hospitality will help me to discover that.

I have been able to secure holiday employment at this hotel and restaurant, and hope to put what I learn at university into action during these periods. I also believe this will aid my learning, as I will be able to see and experience what I am studying, and use this to enhance my work at university.

I would like to pursue a career in hotel management, and my dream is to eventually own my own hotel. While this may seem a pipe dream, it is one I will continue to aim for, hopefully bolstered by a degree in this subject.

Cultural diversity has become a major issue in the hospitality industry of the United States, in particular, representing novel opportunities, benefits and challenges for an increasingly culturally diverse workforce. It is important, therefore, that we search together for practical recommendations that might help human resource managers in hospitality to successfully deal with cultural diversity issues. Cultural diversity training modules are called for so that human resource and hospitality company training programs might better facilitate students increasing their cultural diversity awareness and sensitivity, learning about cultural differences, and developing skills for managing cultural diversity issues.

Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger. When you have a master’s degree, you’re more attractive to employers, whether in your own country or overseas. Here are some interesting programs that will get you abroad doing good work ASAP.

With events management, you could go into the humanitarian events field. The M.Sc. in Event Management at the HTL International School of Hospitality, Tourism and Languages provides you with 1 year of intensive training, language classes and an internship at one of the universities partner companies. Courses include strategic management and operational management. This program costs 3200 EUR per year.

The Master of Hospitality Management & Tourism at the same institution also involves foreign language training and an internship program at a local company. This time, the courses involved include hospitality management, tourism management and customer service and communication skills. This 9-month course costs 3200 EUR per year. Learning another language is so valuable in the humanitarian field, as are management skills.

The course I am intending to pursue is BSc (Hons) International Tourism with Hospitality Management at University of Bedfordshire. This course will help me to understand the changing nature of international tourism as well as the challenges and the rapid growth of Hospitality Management in industries. Moreover, the course will prepare me academically and professionally which will boost my career prospects. I want to do career in this field and I am pretty sure that this program will equip me with lot of tools and skills required to do so.

I am a person who has always greediness in learning. I have completed my International General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCE Ordinary Level) from Cambridge Assessment International Education, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2018. Thereafter, I earn my International Advanced Level from Pearson Edexcel International, British Council, Bangladesh. All throughout my entire student life, I have accumulated useful knowledge, communication skills and analytical skills with various experiences. I choose to grow up my career in tourism and hospitality management because of its fast-changing, dynamic, and highly competitive field. However, my previously earned skills and knowledge’s will help me to complete my chosen course. I choose the UK as my study destination because I believe the UK is the ideal setting for refining my expertise in tourism and Hospitality management while also acquiring a broader, international viewpoint. I confident that the BSc (Hons) International Tourism with Hospitality Management programme at the University of Bedfordshire will create more opportunities for me with added knowledge and skills in addition to my current strengths.

Upon my research, I am able to know that the BSc (Hons) International Tourism with Hospitality Management is designed to meet industry needs which will play a vital role to enhance my employability. These modules will help me to broaden my knowledge of educational and tourism with hospitality management areas on an international level. On top of this, the various assessment methods will help me to develop my critical thinking skills and enable me to gain valuable experience to use within the workplace. This has motivated me a lot to pursue this BSc course at the University of Bedfordshire. I am certain that my chosen program is right for me and that possessing this BSc degree would ensure better employment opportunities and a successful career back home. I aim to develop my career as a Hotel Manager in a well renowned tourism and hospitality sectors of my home country. I have chosen UK for pursuing my BSc (Hons) because UK is an English-speaking country and it has a rich cultural diversity. It is said that Alumni who are currently studying in UK about its environment and other things like higher quality of education and high standard of living. My home country’s learning materials are not adjusted with the latest developments. Degrees do not maintain proper standard. That’s why degrees are not internationally recognized and valued. But, UK qualification is highly regarded and most of the employers of my home country have an eye for those who have a UK degree because of the distinct curriculums and mode of education they provide. UK is home to some of the best universities in the world and are placed high in the world rankings. There is a total of 143 universities in the UK, 108 of which are in England, 19 in Scotland, 8 universities in Wales and 8 in Northern Ireland. Of the top 10 universities in the world, 4 are held by UK institutions. Owing to educational excellence of these universities, there are a total of 485,645 international students studying in the UK, representing over 100 different countries. Candidates will have the opportunity to take part in world-class research that have direct influence on many international affairs, such as vaccine research, innovative business idea development, and more. Students can choose from over 64 different subject areas, offering over 50,000 different courses. The degrees awarded by UK universities are recognized all over the world by recruiters and academics alike and most universities have a graduate employability rate of almost 90%. After considering these facts, it was not very difficult for me to choose UK as the sole target for my further studies.

I have compared University of Bedfordshire with all the alternatives and have decided this is where I would like to study. This decision is due to the university’s good reputation in teaching, research and with their industry links. University of Bedfordshire is ranked ‘Silver’ in TEF ranking. To support students the University have invested heavily in their facilities to shape the physical and intellectual environment of learning. 91% of graduates in work and/or further study within six months of graduating (DLHE 2018). Moreover, the University have campuses with excellent facilities. Tutors are highly-qualified academic and most of them have received National Teaching Fellowship Awards. Moreover, The University of Bedfordshire is a member of The Association for Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE) which is the subject association for tourism in higher education in the UK. It would be a great achievement for me if I get the opportunity to study at the University of Bedfordshire.

As the constant rise of cookery shows on television, food blogs and the seemingly endless cookery books that are published attest, human beings are justifiably obsessed with food. No wonder, since eating, and by extension cooking, are amongst the very few activities that we all must engage in daily. This shared obsession has been the catalyst for my continuing study and work within related fields, turning the physical drive to consume into an intellectual passion that drives me to understand every aspect of humanity’s biological, cultural and social relationships to food and to, ultimately, help others to be equally as inspired by the food that they eat.

My long held academic goal of studying nutrition unfortunately was not possible to achieve in my native country, despite my consistently strong performance across a range of subjects. Since moving the UK, however, I have found that opportunities to study various aspects of the food and hospitality industry have presented themselves throughout my employment, alerting me to both the potential breadth of my interests and the rewards of working with a customer-focused industry. Alongside specific training, I have also achieved a Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service and a Level 5 Diploma in Hospitality Management during my career.

Hospitality personal statement example

I am hugely proud of the way in which these courses have improved my knowledge of my industry as well as proving my ability to study in the UK. While I realise that undergraduate study in a second language presents unique challenges, the dedication I have shown to gaining City and Guild qualifications in both Maths and English, as well as undertaking a course in Practical English, show how serious I am about gaining the skills to pursue my academic goals.

As a mother of two, relocating to the UK, these goals have, by necessity, had to be put on hold until now. Luckily, I have managed to turn this necessity into an opportunity by finding employment within the catering and hospitality industries. My eight years as a Catering Assistant with John Lewis have seen me work across a number of departments; gaining experience across all food counters as well as specific training qualifications, such as the Level 2 Barista Award. Obviously, working within food preparation and distribution demands a thorough understanding of the product and I have become well-versed in all aspects, including Health and Safety legislation. My strong performance at John Lewis is built on a dedication to my interests that saw me undertake previous roles with Hibernia Chilled Foods, Burger King and Select Service Partner, allowing me to gain a comprehensive overview of the demands of both ‘front of house’ and ‘behind the scenes’ work within catering.

I have also found that catering offers a perfect outlet for my interpersonal skills. I am adept at building relationships with customers and colleagues and have been asked to accept a mentoring role with John Lewis. This involves supporting fellow staff and creating and delivering ‘communication half hours’ to ensure that the team is aware of, and engaged with, decision making at a higher level. I enjoy the interaction that comes as part of my job immensely and get great satisfaction from knowing that I have supported the staff in delivering the best service to our customers.

I have demonstrated a dedication to improving my knowledge of both the hospitality industry in general, and catering specifically, through over a decade of work and study. Both have been driven by a passion for helping others to realise the potential of the truly pleasurable and essential act of eating. It is this passion that will continue to drive me to gain as much knowledge and experience as I can through further study and that will, ultimately, help me o progress in chosen career.

In-demand skills across the job sector in 2022 included cloud computing, data analysis skills like artificial intelligence and SQL, management, and UX design [ 1 ].

Don’t know where to start? Approach your manager and see if they have suggestions. You can also browse job descriptions of positions you’d be interested in pursuing; the common skills listed will help you get a sense of what’s in-demand in your field. Do some research to get a sense of what you want to learn and what will be useful to your work.

Develop skills by taking online or in-person courses, shadowing a coworker, or going back to school, among other ways. Think about what fits your schedule and the level of expertise you’re aiming for to see what works best for you.

2. Develop your workplace skills.

Workplace skills are the tools and practices that help people in a workplace connect and interact smoothly with one another. Sometimes referred to as human or soft skills, workplace skills can be crucial for advancing to higher-level positions. Workplace skills include verbal and nonverbal communication, empathy, self-awareness, and leadership.

Specific goals might include:

Complete an online course on communication, negotiation, or psychology

Join a social public speaking club, such as a local Toastmasters chapter

3. Take up leadership responsibilities.

Actively seeking out leadership opportunities will allow you to develop leadership skills , and show others that you are striving to grow. Approach your manager to see how you might be able to put your leadership skills into practice. Have a few suggestions at the ready. Here are some examples to get your started:

Lead two team meetings this quarter

Plan and lead a team initiative to collectively learn a new tool or skill

Plan the next team offsite or activity

4. Expand your professional network.

Expanding your professional network can expose you to new ideas, build your profile, keep you informed of new job opportunities, and help you learn continuously. 

Sign up for events to attend in your field, join professional groups in person or through social media platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn, or find opportunities to volunteer your skills through volunteer databases like VolunteerMatch . 

Some concrete goals you can set include:

Attend five in-person or virtual professional events

Find and join three professional groups on LinkedIn

5. Level-up your credentials.

Beefing up your credentials can open up new career opportunities or clear a path to a promotion. Credentials can include certifications, professional certificates , and degrees. See what makes the most sense for both your short- and long-term career goals . Once you get your credential, don’t forget to inform your manager and list it in relevant places like your resume and LinkedIn profile .

Learning more about your field through various media—like books, podcasts, and news publications, to name a few—can enrich your understanding of the context around your work and inform you of ways to improve. Plus, as passive ways of absorbing information, you’ll be able to learn as you, say, go on a walk or wait for the bus.

Ask coworkers or professionals in your network about recommendations. Otherwise, a quick online search should yield plenty of ideas, whether you’re looking for marketing podcasts , books on project management , or something else.

Here are some concrete goals you might aspire to:

Read two books in your field in a quarter

Listen to one podcast on a relevant topic a week

Find 10 experts in your field on Twitter to follow

7. Find other ways to deepen job satisfaction.

Being satisfied as a professional doesn’t necessarily mean striving for constant achievement and earning promotions. Job satisfaction is tied to many factors besides enjoying the work itself—including forming fulfilling relationships with coworkers, achieving work-life balance , and keeping your mental and physical health in check. Plus, there’s evidence that links job satisfaction to higher productivity and less turnover in workplaces—being a happy worker is likely going to benefit your company too [ 2 ].

Here are some goals you might set to improve your workday:

Schedule lunch or coffee chats with coworkers 

Join or start a workplace interest group

Create a plan to prepare healthy meals for lunch

Set reminders to take intermittent breaks throughout the day

Clarify boundaries on work expectations outside of working hours

8. Take a relevant course.

Courses can help you develop skills, learn about issues relevant to your work, and flex new parts of your brain. Courses can be directly related to your work responsibilities, but this might be an opportunity to challenge yourself to develop in new ways. Data analysis , project management , or UX design courses may give you the skills you need—but consider other fields like creative writing, public speaking, or foreign languages that can deepen your work in more unexpected ways.

Specific goals for coursework might look like the following:

Complete a course on XYZ topic in a quarter 

Map out a plan for coursework you’ll take throughout the year

9. Shadow another department.

Shadowing another department can have myriad positives: it can encourage communication and cooperation across siloed teams, inspire ways to improve your own team, and leave you with a better understanding of how your organization works. 

You can set goals such as:

Ask three people from different departments to lunch

Create a program in your workplace to encourage cross-team shadowing

10. Find a mentor.

A mentor can help you navigate challenges in the workplace and help you progress in your career. 

Finding a mentor might sound like a daunting task, but be assured that many have done it before. Some workplaces have mentoring programs in place that make it easy for people to connect with a more experienced professional. You might also find that your professional network will come in handy here. You can start by finding people who have had careers you find close to your aspirations in professional groups or alumni communities. Or if it makes sense, reach out to somebody in your workplace that you think you’ll be able to learn from.

Goals that will help you land a mentor include:

Create a pitch that you can use to contact potential mentors

Arrange a meeting with potential mentors to see if they’re a fit

Map out your short- or long-term goals (or both) of having a mentor

How to set professional development goals

1. know what you’re working towards..

Start by taking some time to consider what you want out of your career, now or in the future. Goal-setting is a useful exercise because it can clarify what you really want out of your career, and identify tangible steps to achieve it.

Don’t know what you want to do in five or 10 years yet? Start smaller, and identify your interests. If you’ve always admired your manager who can speak eloquently in front of others, consider a public speaking course. If you find yourself fascinated by your coworker’s ability to analyze data sets, try learning Python or another programming language.

2. Set SMART goals.

SMART goals are goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Here’s what each of those components mean:

Specific: Goals should be well-defined and unambiguous so that you know exactly what you’re aspiring to.

Measurable: Goals should have a clear way of identifying whether you’ve achieved them, or if not, how close you came to them. For example, saying Finish three modules of my online course is more measurable than a goal like Work on my online course.

Achievable: Setting a goal that you can realistically achieve is key to actually achieving them. Plus, thinking in the back of your mind that a goal is impossible may be demotivating. Keep yourself motivated by setting reasonable goals.

Relevant: Your goals should be relevant to you—that is, they should align with your long-term aspirations and values. Think of this as the “why” of your goal.

Time-bound: Set a deadline for your goals so you can stay on track and motivated.

CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) was introduced with the intention of recognizing individual author contributions, reducing authorship disputes and facilitating collaboration. The idea came about following a 2012 collaborative workshop led by Harvard University and the Wellcome Trust, with input from researchers, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and publishers, including Elsevier, represented by Cell Press.

CRediT offers authors the opportunity to share an accurate and detailed description of their diverse contributions to the published work.

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that the descriptions are accurate and agreed by all authors

The role(s) of all authors should be listed, using the relevant above categories

Authors may have contributed in multiple roles

CRediT in no way changes the journal’s criteria to qualify for authorship
