5.  A factory produces 24532 bulbs in a month. What is its annual production?

6. There are 145968 bags of sugar, 236487 bags of wheat and some bags of rice in a godown. It the total number of bags in the godown is 450000, find the number of bags of rice.

7. A factory manufactured 483685 toys in three weeks. The production in first week was 146345 toys and in second week 138152 toys. Find the production in the third week.

8. The cost of a sofa set is $9372. How much will 124 such sofa sets cost?

9. There are 86 rooms in a school. 4386 students study there. Equal number of students sits in each room?

10. 1575 students of a school want to go Agra by bus. If one bus can carry 75 students, how many buses are required to carry all the students?

11. The cost of a radio set is 1475. What is the cost of 35 such radio sets?

12. In an election, 52496 people voted for Ron, 44929 people for Jhon and 36824 people for Mike in a town. If everyone voted in the town, what is the total number of voters?

13. Maria bought 96 toys priced equally for $12960. The amount of $1015 is still left with her. Find the cost of each toy and the amount she had.

  • Lucy went to the market and bought 2 pounds of millet and 6 pounds of corn for her restaurant. What is the total weight of the cereal she buys in all? 

Solution : Weight of millet = 2

Weight of corn = 6

Total weight of cereal purchased = 2 + 6 = 8 pounds

Therefore, the total weight of cereal Lucy bought is 8 pounds. 

  • Sarah has 35 rose plants, 65 orchid plants and 80 jasmine plants in her nursery. What is the total number of plants she has in her nursery?

Solution: Number of rose plants = 35

Number of orchid plants = 65

Number of jasmine plants = 80

Total number of plants = 35 + 65 + 80 = 180 

Therefore, the total number of plants in Sarah’s nursery is 180. 

  • Bunny got three pairs of shoes for his family worth 120 $, 160 $ and 300 $. What is the total amount of money he paid for the shoes?

Solution : Amount of three pairs of shoes = 120 $, 160 $ and 300 $

Total amount of money paid for shoes = 120 + 160 + 300 = 580 $

Therefore, the total amount of money Bunny paid for the shoes is 580 $. 

  • Tim got 150 packs of biscuits, 100 candies and 176 chocolate chips for his Halloween party. What is the total number of food items he purchased from the store?

Solution: Number of biscuits = 150

Number of candies = 100

Number of chocolate chips = 176

Total number of food items = 150 + 100 + 176 = 426

Therefore, the total number of food items Tim purchased from the store is 426.

Subtraction Word Problems 

  • Sam got 4 apples from the orchard. He gave 2 apples to his siblings. How many apples are remaining with him?

Solution : Number of apples got from orchard = 4

Number of apples given to siblings = 2

Total number of apples remaining with Sam = 4 – 2 = 2

Therefore, the total number of apples left with Sam is 2. 

  • Alisha baked 67 vanilla cupcakes for a birthday party. She used 50 cupcakes for the party and kept the rest inside the refrigerator. How many cupcakes did she keep in the refrigerator?

Solution : Number of baked cupcakes = 67

Number of cupcakes used for the birthday party = 50 

Total number of cupcakes Alisha kept inside the refrigerator = 67 – 50 = 27

Therefore, the total number of cupcakes kept in the refrigerator by Alisha is 27. 

  • Around 100 kids attended the art workshop conducted by school authorities. Out of 100, around 80 kids completed their art activities at a given time. How many children continued their artwork in the workshop even after the deadline?

Solution : Number of children who attended the workshop = 100

Number of children who completed their art activities on time = 80

Total number of children who continued their artwork after the deadline = 100 – 80 = 20

Therefore, the total number of children who continued with artwork after the deadline is 20. 

  • A girl has 20 oranges, and she shares 2 oranges with her friends. How many oranges are remaining with her?

Solution: Number of oranges = 20

Number of oranges given to her friends = 2

Total number of oranges remaining with the girl = 20 – 2 = 18 oranges

Therefore, the total number of oranges remaining with the girl after sharing the oranges with her friends is 18.

Multiplication Word Problems 

  • A person drives 10 miles per hour. What is the total distance he covered in 4 hours?

Solution: Number of miles traveled in one hour = 10 

Total number of miles covered in 4 hours = 10 x 4 = 40 miles

Therefore, the total distance traveled by the person in 4 hours is 40 miles. 

  • A waiter earns 50 $ per hour. What is the total amount of money he earns for 8 hours?

Solution: Amount of money earned in one hour = 50 $

Total amount of money earned in 8 hours = 50 x 8 = 400 $

Therefore, the total amount of money the waiter earned for 8 hours is 400 $. 

  • Samuel purchased 2 school bags for his daughter and son. The cost of each school bag is 30 $. What is the total cost of the bags he bought?

Solution: Number of school bags = 2

Cost of each school bag = 30 $

Total cost of school bags = 30 x 2 = 60 $

Therefore, the total cost of school bags Samuel purchased for his daughter and son is 60 $. 

  • A person keeps 50 pens in a carton box. What is the total number of pens he keeps in 15 carton boxes? 

Solution: Number of pens in a carton box = 50

Total number of carton boxes = 15 

Total number of pens in 15 carton boxes = 50 x 15 = 750 pens 

Therefore, the total number of pens the person kept in 15 carton boxes is 750.

  • A boy gave 150 $ to his friend to purchase new clothes. His friend bought 2 pairs of pants from the allotted money. How much money did his friend pay for each pair of pants? 

Solution: Amount of money given to the friend = 150 $

Number of pants purchased = 2

Total amount of money spent on each pair of pants = 150 ÷ 2 = 75 $

Therefore, the total amount of money spent on each pair of pants by the boy’s friend is 75 $. 

  • Susan baked 400 vanilla pies for her guests. She distributed the entire vanilla pies equally to the 100 guests present at the party. How many vanilla pies did each guest receive?

Solution: Number of vanilla pies = 400

Number of guests present at the party = 100

Total number of vanilla pies received by each guest = 400 ÷ 100 = 4

Therefore, the total number of vanilla pies received by each guest is 4. 

  • A jug contains 50 cups of juice in it. There are 10 people in the queue waiting for a cup of juice to drink. How many cups of juice will each person get?

Solution : Number of cups of juice in a jug = 50

Number of people waiting to get a cup of juice = 10 

Total number of cups of juice each person will receive = 50 ÷ 10 = 5 cups of juice

Therefore, the total number of cups of juice each person will receive is 5. 

  • 16 students in a class ran a total of 2000 meters in the relay race. How many meters did each child run? 

Solution: Number of students in a classroom = 16

Number of meters students ran in a relay race = 2000

Total number of meters each student ran = 2000 ÷ 16 = 125 meters

Therefore, the total number of meters each student ran was 125.

It’s the larger number. This always comes before the subtrahend.</li><li>Subtrahend is the number that’s being taken away from the minuend. It’s the smaller number.</li><li>Difference is the answer we get in a subtraction equation.</li><li>We use a minus sign (-) in between the minuend and the subtrahend. We write an equal sign (=) before the difference.</li><li>Multiplicand is the number to be multiplied.</li><li>Multiplier is the number that tells how many times a multiplicand should be multiplied.</li><li>The multiplicand and multiplier are also called factors.</li><li>The multiplier is often written first, but the position of these numbers does not matter. This is called the Commutative Property of Multiplication.</li><li>The answer in a multiplication equation is called the product. A multiplication sign (x) is written between the two factors.</li><li>Dividend is the number that’s being divided.</li><li>Divisor is the number that tells how many times a dividend should be divided.</li><li>The answer we get in a division equation is called the quotient.</li><li>A division sign (÷) is placed between the dividend and the divisor. You may also see the slash (/) used as a division sign.</li></ul><h2>VARIABLES IN ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION EQUATIONS</h2><ul><li>Variables are letters used to represent a number you don’t know yet.</li><li>You can use any letter in the alphabet to represent a variable.</li><li>The number 6 was added to the variable x. To undo this, we have to subtract 6. To undo addition, you must subtract.</li><li>To keep an equation balanced, whatever we do on one side, we must also do on the other side. If we subtract 6 from the left, we have to subtract 6 from the right side, too.</li><li>x + 6 = 9 x + 6 – 6 = 9 – 6 x = 3</li><li>Once we get something like “variable = some number”, that is the value of the variable that makes the equation true.</li><li>The value of the variable that will make the equation true is called the solution to the equation.</li><li>10 – y = 2</li><li>The variable y was subtracted from 10. Since y was subtracted from 10, let’s try adding y and see what happens. In the expression 2y, 2 is the coefficient of the variable y.</li><li>That means the solution to the equation is y = 5.</li><li>The variable p was divided by 7. Basic Arithmetic Operations: The Four Fundamental Operators

Just like Julie Andrews told us in The Sound of Music , we should “start at the very beginning” because it’s “a very good place to start.” In math, we don’t start with Do-Re-Mi, but we do build on the fundamentals known as arithmetic operations!

Mastering arithmetic operations means setting a strong foundation for a lifetime of successful math learning, so we strongly encourage taking the time to really commit to these skills!

If you’re looking for more of a broad overview of the arithmetic branch of mathematics, let’s take a step back so we can go through arithmetic as a whole first.

Ready to get started with arithmetic operations?

First of all, what is “arithmetic operations”?

Arithmetic operations are the building blocks for all mathematical processes and methods. (Yeah, they’re kind of a big deal!) These types of operations are part of the “arithmetic” branch of math.

Arithmetic operations strip math down to the basics that we use every day, whether we realize it or not. Those basics are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Not so scary, right?

Basic arithmetic

You’ll sometimes hear arithmetic operations referred to as “basic arithmetic,” meaning the most fundamental mathematical operations.

Fundamental arithmetic operations

The fundamental arithmetic operations are typically thought to be addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

We’ll dive into each more thoroughly in a moment!

Some schools will also include comparing numbers and evaluating powers (or exponents) as part of arithmetic operations. If you’re not there yet, don’t worry! Everyone moves at their own pace — and we can always help you when you do get there.

The four basic operations of math

Whether you’re balancing your checkbook or ordering pizza for a party, chances are you’re using some of the four basic arithmetic operations daily.

But sometimes, when something is so second-nature, it can be hard to explain it well. Here’s a table of terms and examples that you can use when describing the four basic operations:

Now that we know more about each operation, we can drill down even further and take a look at each operation’s operator.

What are arithmetic operators?

Arithmetic operators are the symbols we see in math problems that represent an action we should take. They’re like little math GPS instructions, telling us what needs to happen in order for us to reach our final destination.

In other words, the operator tells us which operation to perform! For example, the $$-$$ operator tells us that we should subtract.

Let’s look at each operator a little more closely:

Arithmetic operators: a guide

Learning arithmetic operators (and their related operations) is like learning to drive a car — you need know which pedal does what before you can hit the gas and start steering.

Here’s a handy chart explaining what each operator means and how it might look on the page:

Sometimes, you’ll see more than one operator in the same problem. If those operators are different — for example, a “+” and a “÷” in the same problem — you’ll need to follow the PEMDAS structure .

As a reminder, PEMDAS stands for:

  • Parentheses
  • Multiplication (left to right)
  • Division (left to right)
  • Addition (left to right)
  • Subtraction (left to right)

Arithmetic operations examples

Understanding the context behind arithmetic operations will help strengthen learning, but the thing that will really cement these skills is trying them out! Working through problems — and, honestly, getting a few wrong — ensures that the learner is fully involved.

So, when you’re ready, try solving these example problems:

  • $$2 \times1$$
  • $$8 – 5 + 2$$
  • $$3 \times4 – 1$$
  • $$\frac{4}{2} + \frac{6}{3}$$
  • $$5 – 1 + 3$$
  • $$7 \times 3 \times 2$$
  • $$12 ÷ 3 + 5$$
  • $$2 \times 0$$

Here’s what it looks like:

One more thing: Which two basic arithmetic operations are commutative?

Addition and multiplication are known as “commutative” (in other words, they follow the Commutative Property). This means that you can switch the order of the numbers and still get the same result.

You might notice this when you work through the example problems, but the Commutative Property means that $$2 + 3$$ equals the same sum as $$3 + 2$$. Likewise, $$4 \times 5$$ gets us the same product as $$5 \times4$$ would.

However, this does not mean that we can switch between addition and multiplication. For example, $$2 + 3 4$$ is not the same as $$2\times34$$. That’s why PEMDAS is so important!

We hope that, by now, you’re feeling a little more at ease with arithmetic operations. The math itself isn’t too intimidating, so as long as you have a strong understanding of the terms and symbols, you’re ready to take on arithmetic operations!
