Our part-time PhD program is tailored for industry professionals who receive full financial support from their employers. Financial arrangements between the employee and employer must be agreed upon in advance. Tufts University does not offer stipends, scholarships, discounts, or financial support for this program. Part-time PhD students are not eligible for TA/RA positions, grading roles, or any other paid positions within the university. We strongly advise applicants to seek employer permission before considering external work. It's essential to adhere to employment agreements and program policies to ensure compliance.

Qualified domestic students who are interested in continued learning, developing their skill set, or expanding their career path are encouraged to apply. This program is not available to international applicants unless they are currently working for a U.S. company. No visas can be issued for part-time PhD students.

How to Apply

All applicants must submit the following materials: Contact an advisor or faculty member Contact the advisor or faculty member with whom you would like to study to talk about the specific requirements. Before applying you must first have a discussion with a faculty member to confirm that there is mutual interest in the research the applicant intends to pursue. A successful discussion and any agreement among the candidate and faculty member does not supersede the formal application process. All applicants must formally apply. The application will be reviewed following all the processes and guidelines established for SOE graduate applicants.

Online Application for Admission  Note: An application fee of $85 is payable through the online application by credit card or e-check (drawn on a U.S. bank). The application fee is not refundable. Your credit card or e-check statement is your receipt. Applications cannot be reviewed until this fee has been received. Check our website to see if you are eligible for a fee waiver. Academic Records  Applicants are required to upload a copy of transcripts received from each accredited college or university attended, where credit was earned toward an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree. Transcripts for study abroad or transfer programs are not required if the course titles, grades, and credit hours are included on the transcript of the degree-granting institution. If the transcript is in a language other than English, you are required to provide a certified, official translation into English. If you are admitted and decide to enroll, you will be required to request the official hard copy transcripts from all of your degree granting institutions be sent directly to our Office of Graduate Admissions, from that institution, before you can matriculate. 

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) GRE scores are no longer required for candidates with an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited U.S. institution. Letters of Recommendation Most programs will require three letters of recommendation. Current Tufts students and alumni are only required to submit two letters. If an applicant submits three letters, one letter may be a commitment letter from your company that your studies will be supported. Letters of recommendation should be submitted through the online application system. If that is not possible, you may have your recommender email their letter as an attachment to [email protected], from a company/institutional/organization/professional email account. Personal Statement  Applicants are required to upload a personal statement describing your reasons for wanting to pursue graduate study at Tufts in the program to which you are applying. Please limit your personal statement to a maximum of five pages. Refer to the Requirements and Deadlines  to determine if the program to which you are applying has specific prompts.  Résumé / CV A current résumé or CV that includes information about, and dates of your educational history, employment, academic honors, scholarships, publications, and other activities is required to be uploaded as part of your completed application.

Students who enroll part-time in an engineering PhD program will be responsible for all tuition and fees charged at a per semester rate. Financial Aid and Employer Tuition Reimbursement

Low-interest Federal Direct Loans and Federal Perkins Loans are administered by Tufts Student Financial Services which maintains information on all federal programs as well as alternative forms of financing such as non-need-based loans. Federal aid is available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. To apply for Federal Direct loans, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, and the Tufts University Institution code is 002219. We recommend that you file the FAFSA by December 1 for spring admission and by March 1 for fall admission.

Tuition reimbursement/Tuition assistance is an employee benefit through which an employer pays for a predetermined amount of continuing education credits or college coursework to be applied toward a degree. There are three parallel processes that must be completed to become an Industry PhD student

  • The Northeastern University Industry/Experiential PhD Program is an academic degree program offered by Northeastern to qualified individuals who obtain advanced-entry admission and wish to pursue their PhD degree while continuing to work full time.
  • To participate in the program, the student’s employer must execute the attached Program Agreement and pay an annual administrative fee, which covers tuition and certain fees.
  • Permitting the student/employee to continue working full-time, and to engage in use- inspired research that is aligned to the employer’s business. In most cases, this research will take place at the employer’s site.
  • Allowing the employer to retain all intellectual property developed in the course of the student’s research, in accordance with its internal company policies.
  • Including an individual designated by the employer to serve on the student’s dissertation committee as an “industry advisor” and to monitor the student’s research progress.
  • The attached template has been carefully drafted with the input of several industry partners to address the employer’s business needs while protecting the integrity of the degree program, the validity of the student’s research, and the university’s accreditation status.
  • Because this is a Northeastern University academic program, the material terms of the Program Agreement are not negotiable. If the employer has specific operational requirements that need to be addressed by written agreement, the employer may submit an addendum to the Program Agreement, which the university will consider in good faith. However, any terms that seek to change the fundamental operation or academic components of the program or the obligations of the parties will not be accepted.

The mission of the MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research (IWER) is to conduct and disseminate cutting-edge research that improves the lives of workers and their loved ones and that guides managers in crafting a successful and inclusive future of work. IWER is a multidisciplinary community of sociologists, labor economists, and labor and employment scholars doing research and teaching on topics central to work and employment.

It’s a small, highly collaborative, multidisciplinary group whose graduates go on to join the faculty at universities all over the world. IWER PhD students work closely with IWER core faculty yet also benefit from the expertise and resources of the larger Work and Organization Studies group at MIT Sloan, of which IWER is a part. This doctoral program includes 66 units of coursework and a dissertation. Ph.D. Programs That Prepare You for Work Beyond Academia

Some Ph.D. programs include professional development and hands-on skills training.

How to Find a Marketable Ph.D.

Experts advise Ph.D. hopefuls to take note of the many ways a doctorate can prepare them for positions outside of colleges and universities.

Aiming for a tenure-track university job right after completing your Ph.D.? Experts say beware. The market is tough, so consider broadening your search beyond academia.

According to a June 2022 report from the American Association of University Professors, 61.5% of U.S. college and university faculty in fall 2020 had contingent positions and did not have the job security that comes with tenure.

Based on its analysis of compensation statistics and other financial figures from U.S. colleges and universities, the AAUP issued a warning about working conditions for U.S. scholars.

"Collectively," the AAUP wrote, "these data sources paint a bleak economic picture of the profession: deteriorating wages of college and university faculty members in relation to the wages of other professions, continued gender pay inequality, appallingly low pay for adjunct faculty members, erosion of the financial structures that support higher education, rising threats to academic freedom and shared governance, and continued uncertainty about the COVID-19 pandemic—all threaten the standards of the profession and the quality of higher education itself."

Given the many challenges facing higher education faculty, experts advise Ph.D. hopefuls to take note of the many ways a doctorate can prepare them for positions outside of colleges and universities. Charitable organizations, government agencies, industrial laboratories, museums, political think tanks, social advocacy groups and technology companies often employ Ph.D. recipients.

Regardless of academic discipline, people with Ph.D. degrees have a variety of employment opportunities and can "build meaningful careers outside of academia, as well as inside of academia," says Todd Maurer, CEO of The Versatile Ph.D., a career coaching and counseling firm that caters to Ph.D. students.

Nancy Kass, vice provost for graduate and professional education at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, says solid Ph.D. training cultivates skills that are valuable to a variety of employers.

"Students end up with a skill set that prepares them for so many things, and they ought to be aware of the range of opportunities available to them," she says, adding that deep knowledge of a subject and the ability to critically assess information are useful outside of colleges and universities.

Kass says Johns Hopkins is one of many U.S. postsecondary institutions making a concerted effort to train Ph.D. scholars to work wherever they want, inside or outside academia.

"We're not contributing to the world to the extent that we could if we're only preparing students for one sector of employment, " Kass says.

Johns Hopkins has a career office at its Homewood campus that mainly caters to Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers in the arts and sciences, engineering and education fields. A similar office is at the East Baltimore campus and primarily assists Ph.D. students and postdocs in health care subjects such as bioethics, medicine, nursing and public health, according to its website.

The university also has a Ph.D. professional development innovation initiative that includes funding for Ph.D.-oriented career events, long-term professional development programs and mentoring or networking functions for minority Ph.D. students.

Issues to Consider When Assessing Ph.D. Career Services

Leaders of national academic organizations say that graduate programs differ in how they provide professional development opportunities to Ph.D. students.

Robert Townsend, director of the humanities, arts, and culture programs at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, says that there is so much emphasis on dissertation research and writing in some Ph.D. programs that insufficient attention is paid to what happens after graduates enter the workforce.

"There's a growing movement both in the sciences and in the humanities to try and expand the way they teach doctoral students to move beyond just that traditional dissertation focus," says Townsend, who received a Ph.D. degree in history from George Mason University in Virginia.

Ph.D. programs are increasingly likely to match students with professional internships at organizations whose missions relate to their field of study, which can not only inform students' academic research but also encourage career exploration, Townsend says. For example, he says, a Ph.D. student pursuing a degree in economic history might get an internship at a bank.

Coursework in Ph.D. programs sometimes involves cultivating technical skills that are valuable inside and outside of academia, such as the ability to build a website, perform a complex statistical analysis or do computer programming, Townsend says. Prospective Ph.D. students should investigate whether graduate schools offer professional development opportunities beyond traditional research or teaching assistant positions, and whether courses include hands-on projects that would impress employers, he advises.

Joy Connolly, president of the American Council of Learned Societies, urges Ph.D. applicants to look at program websites and check whether they highlight accomplishments for recent alumni with a variety of career paths, including those who work outside of academia.

"A good Ph.D. program is one that prepares you with equal vision and energy for a rewarding career outside the college and university," says Connolly, who earned her Ph.D. in classical studies from the University of Pennsylvania .

"Until very recently, in my own field and in related fields in the humanities, it was very common for departments to list only those past Ph.D.'s that had landed tenure-track jobs at elite universities," she says, noting that many departments that formerly did this have changed their practices.

It's also wise to carefully evaluate the practicality of the Ph.D. curriculum and to assess the quantity and quality of professional development opportunities that provide transferable skills, she says.

"Look at the curriculum and ask, if it's not immediately obvious, what experiences have been baked in the curriculum. Not add-ons – not like access to a Saturday morning workshop twice in your graduate school career – but actual pieces of the educational experience that go outside of the discipline and go outside the department, that open up to jobs outside the academy."

For example, graduate programs can teach Ph.D. students how to communicate information in a variety of mediums, using not only research papers but also op-ed pieces, presentations and classroom materials, Connolly says.

Top-notch Ph.D. programs also provide training in multiple research methods rather than emphasizing only a single way of conducting research, Connolly says.

"You learn to understand and analyze in a wide range of ways. And that's something, too, to keep an eye out for. If you're doing a French Ph.D. and you're only reading French poetry and novels, and you're never reading any other kind of source, that's a red flag."

Program Overview

The PhD in Leadership and Change is a distinctive program rooted in the mission of Antioch University, the learning goals of lifelong adult learners, and the needs of professionals as disciplined reflective change agents and engaged scholar-practitioners.

We view this PhD as a degree that prepares students to enter the community of scholar- practitioners. It is a degree that is appropriate for university researchers as well as practicing professionals. Scholars, whether in industry or academy, honor the practices and obligations of scholarship as stewards of their discipline and professional domain. Whether in a business or university, scholars perform pedagogical roles in their professional lives. We believe the PhD degree prepares scholars to practice their profession with highest standards in multiple and varied academic and non-academic settings.

Accordingly, within the context of domain and disciplinary competence, it is our view that the essential characteristics of a scholar as a professional are:

  • To be Reflective. One doesn’t just act, but regularly steps back and reflects on what the action means. Reflection can’t be done in isolation, however; therefore, it is important to establish communities of reflection. Thus, the PhD in Leadership and Change places a high value on disciplined reflection within and among peers, in the form of cohorts.
  • To be Responsible. One upholds the standards of evidence, argumentation, and the drive for honesty in one’s own work. Thus, the PhD program places a high value on the scholarly enterprise, ethical behavior, and rigorous inquiry skills.
  • To be Communal. It is a scholar’s obligation to pass on what she/he knows. The work of the scholarly community transcends any one person. Thus, this program places a high value on collaborative learning, dialogue, and a robust community of learners.

In order to prepare people to become stewards of discipline, domain, or profession, and to be, in the words of the Carnegie Foundation’s former President, Lee Shulman, “officers of the community of scholars,” we believe it is important to rethink key aspects of doctoral education. This PhD program is designed for working professionals who will understand and lead organizational change in their professions as reflective practitioners and engaged scholars. Understanding and leading change in the professions requires the essential elements of the scholar as professional: to be a reflective practitioner, to be responsible and act with integrity as one leads, and to be communal in one’s learning, leading, and reflecting. In essence, our program posits that scholarship is not site bound, and we believe that working professionals can, in fact, be working scholars in the best sense of that tradition and community. While retaining Antioch’s educational philosophy and values, this PhD program has developed educational goals and activities that are distinctive within American higher education and represent an alternative to most present PhD programs. In developing this program, special emphasis has been given to some of the major issues raised in the national discussion on re-envisioning the PhD. These discussions have emphasized the need for programs:

  • to be more learner-centered,
  • to encourage students to collaborate with each other in their doctoral work,
  • to increase the quality and availability of faculty mentoring for students, and
  • to increase the integration of professional practice with academic learning.

Further, this re-envisioning effort has also called for experimentation with new types of PhD programs and for the assessment of these programs to determine their effectiveness.

In Spring 2022 and Spring 2010, the PhD program underwent Comprehensive Program Reviews–a process in which external reviewers evaluate the degree to which a degree program is fulfilling its stated mission and purpose, and how well. The 2022 reviewers concluded their assessment by saying, “Without a doubt, the Program should be commended for its novel educational model that has been a source of strength and pride for Antioch University.” In 2010, the reviewers concluded that “The PhD program is serving as a national model to inform the continuing discussion of the nature of doctoral education in the United States and around the world. It is once again placing Antioch University at the forefront of innovation, leadership, and change. Moreover, the PhD program serves as a model for experimentation in innovation within the University itself, having a highly successful model as measured by student satisfaction as well as degree retention and completion.”

Admission Requirements

The PhDLC program admits a cohort of up to 25-30 students each year. Entry date: July 1, annually Application Deadlines: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis year-around.

  • Early admission review cycle: applications completed by October 1
  • Regular admission review cycle: begins February 1 and continues through mid-May or until the cohort is full

A master’s or other graduate degree issued from an institution recognized by an accrediting body that has been approved by the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and five years of relevant professional experience are minimum eligibility requirements. In addition, selection for admission will depend upon such characteristics as capacity for self-directed learning, evidence of strong academic skills and conceptual abilities, and an interest in interdisciplinary study and applied research. Applicants must demonstrate a strong potential for individual and professional growth, evidence of leadership and aspiration to lead, and an interest in being a socially engaged professional.

IIM Shillong Phd Programme (Working Professionals) 2024 Admission

Application form, eligibility criteria.

Candidates should have

  • A master’s degree post bachelor’s degree obtained in 10+2+3 pattern with at least 55% marks in the bachelor’s level and 60% in the master’s level; or
  • A 5-year integrated master’s degree obtained after completing higher secondary schooling in 10+2 pattern, with at least 55% marks in the bachelor’s level (if explicitly provided) and 60% in the master’s level, or
  • A master’s degree post 4 year/8 semesters bachelor’s degree in 10+2+4 pattern, with a CGPA of 6.5 or above or equivalent marks, or
  • A professional qualification like CA, ICWA, CS, with at least 55% marks in B.Com degree

In case of grades / CGPA, the conversion to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the respective University/ Institution.

If a University/institution confirms that there is no scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA, and multiplying the result by 100.

The above qualification should be from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or, recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

Test Scores and its Validity

IIM Shillong will consider valid scores of GMAT, GRE, CAT (of last 2 years as on date of application), GATE or JRF (NET).

The following categories of candidates are exempt from standard tests stated above, but will require to produce two reference letters from senior leadership:

A. Post graduates of PGP programs (2 year fulltime) of IIMs or an Indian Institute/ University that has featured in the top 50 institutes/universities as per the NIRF list released by the Government of India (List of Management Schools, any year) with CGPA 6.5 out of 10 or equivalent, with at least 5 years of post PGP experience, or

B. Individuals with at least 10 years of rich managerial/work experience from government and non-government sector.

Admission Process for PhD Programme (Working Professionals) 2024

Candidates eligible as above, will be shortlisted based on recommendations of the appropriate committee. The shortlisted candidates will be invited for personal interview (and /or written test ) online for final selection.

Application Procedure

  • Filling in of the application form online by the candidate. This includes a tentative research proposal, wherein the candidate will have to present the tentative research problem proposed to be researched upon.
  • Shortlisting of candidates for the Personal Interview/Interaction based on the profile and tentative research proposal. The applicants will be informed about this process, once they were shortlisted for the process.
  • Personal Interview/Interaction with the candidate over online mode.
  • Offer of admission extended to selected candidates.

If the candidate is applying for two different groups of areas, two separate applications must be submitted.

Programme Fees

The total fees for the course are Rs. 11,00,000/- (Rs. Eleven Lakh Only) + GST as applicable

The application fee is Rs.3000/-

Reservation

Reservation for eligible categories will be as per Government of India rules applicable for doctoral program at the time of admission.

Program Duration

Scholars are expected to complete the program in four years and ensure that they complete the requirements of the program within this stipulated time. In case scholar is not able to complete the program in four year, they can be given two extensions of 6 months each depending upon their progress.

Program Continuation

The candidates who go beyond the above stipulated time may be allowed to continue in the program depending upon their progress and with payment of continuation fee but not beyond 7 years as under:

  • After completion of 4 years into the program an extension of one year will be given subject to a payment of continuation fee of Rs.25, 000/- every 6 months.
  • After completion of 5 years into the program an appeal to the Director has to be made and such participant may be allowed to continue in the program on a six-monthly extension basis for a period of maximum of two years subject to payment of a continuation fee of Rs. 50,000/- every 6 months.
  • Beyond 7 years there will be no further extension.

Why study information technology.

The Doctor of Philosopy (PhD) in Information Technology provides students with the necessary skills to provide applied research in evidence-based, human-centered, and secure information technology (IT) practice. The program prepares students to educate future IT professionals at the K12, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Graduates of our doctoral degree program in Information Technology are also prepared to become key leaders in organizations and enterprises to develop IT solutions for consumers or businesses.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Completed a baccalaureate degree from an ABET-accredited Information Technology degree program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. ABET is a nonprofit certified organization that accredits college and university programs in Applied and Natural Science, Engineering, and Engineering Technology.
  • Completed an undergraduate degree and (a) completed a minimum of 18 graduate-level course work in Information Technology with a GPA of 3.5 or above, or (b) completed significant years of professional experience in information technology as determined by the graduate director.

Other requirements:

  • While it is not a requirement, applicants may include Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores to demonstrate their potential for success in the doctoral program. This is highly recommended for applicants who have not yet completed a Master's degree. 
  • For international applicants: Submission of a transcript evaluation by a  NACES member  is required in place of the unofficial transcript(s) to reflect both a converted GPA (on a 4.0 scale) as well as the US equivalence of the degree earned.
  • References should be from credible sources who speak to relevant IT experience and/or work ethic; two or more reference letters should be on letterhead.
  • A resume or curriculum vita (CV). Include any prior research or teaching experience and a list of publications with full citations, if applicable
  • Applicants are encouraged to share a copy of a Master's thesis and/or academic publication(s) to further demonstrate aptitude for doctoral level research and writing skills. This documentation can be uploaded in the "Additional Materials" section of the application.
  • English Profiency Scores (if applicable)

Graduates of the program will be prepared to hold positions in academia as assistant professors of Information Technology or other related computing disciplines. In the industry, graduates of the program will be able to hold positions in research and development in a variety of IT-related organizations, medical research organizations, financial organizations, social media organizations, government, among many others.

MPA Program Modalities

Mpa core curriculum.

The MPA curriculum is 52 total credit hours. Core coursework (32 credit hours) is designed to provide students a solid grounding in the study of public policy, economics, management and data analysis. MPA students often complete core coursework during the first year of study. During year two, students are able to specialize coursework through skills courses, electives and a Capstone course . (Courses may not be offered every term.)

Analysis of the operating environment of the public administrator: public policy processes, public organization behavior and policy formulation in the U.S. federal system.

PUBAFRS 6010 – Legal Environment of Public Organizations

Examination of public administration within the managerial, political and legal traditions of the U.S. Constitution with the goal of teaching public managers how to work with the law through an understanding of legal concepts, jargon, skills and issues. The course covers federal and Ohio law

Preparation for Program

Students are expected to be familiar with basic concepts of statistics and economics, and knowledgeable about the workings of the U.S. government. Undergraduate courses in microeconomics, statistics and government are strongly recommended. 

Students are also required to have completed a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited institution to enroll, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. If you do not meet the minimum requirements set by the university, but would still like to apply, contact the Glenn College to discuss additional options.

Most of our MPA students work 20 hours per week in addition to the full-time curriculum.  The Glenn College Career Services staff is available to help students seeking options for gaining work experience while obtaining their master’s degree.

‘There are no jobs’: PhD graduates struggle to build careers in academia

Ian Corbin, who holds a PhD in philosophy from Boston College, is a researcher at Harvard Medical School's Center for Bioethics. The academic job market has become especially tight.

For the first time in decades, Ian Corbin has dental insurance.

Over the past 15 years, Corbin has been a doctoral student, an adjunct professor, and a postdoctoral fellow. And trying to scrape together a living has been tough. “I was always hustling,” he says.

When Corbin — who holds a PhD in philosophy from Boston College and works at the intersection of ethics and medicine — was a postdoc at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2019, he earned about $50,000 a year and had kids to support. “So I was always teaching classes in the evening and publishing articles as fast as I could. Just taking on really anything that anyone would give me,” he says.

Corbin’s story isn’t unusual. For many of those with doctorates, who typically spend between four and seven years in graduate school, the employment picture is increasingly bleak, especially for jobs in academia.

Maren Wood, who founded a firm that helps those with doctorates find jobs, says that the market for full-time professors has collapsed. Between 2007 and 2020, the number of openings in philosophy dropped by roughly half. The number of openings in English fell by about 60 percent .

Universities staffed up to accommodate millennials, she says, and now they’re trying to cope with declining enrollments, which are predicted to continue indefinitely . “There’s nothing wrong with a PhD,” says Wood, chief executive of Beyond the Professoriate, whose platform is currently used by Harvard and BC . “The problem is there are no jobs.”

Wood holds a PhD in history, and her breaking point was in 2011 when she came in second place for a job thousands of miles away. The gig was a one-year position. In Reno. And she was told the pay wouldn’t even be enough to live on.

The woman doing the hiring encouraged Wood. “You came in second place!” she exclaimed.

“For what?” Wood asked.

Wood had hoped to be a professor. She had been a top student and earned her PhD from the University of North Carolina. But it didn’t take long to realize: Despite the fact that she had a prestigious degree, there were virtually no decent jobs in universities.

Often, those with doctorates serve as adjunct professors — sometimes while they look for a more permanent gig. To students, adjuncts and tenure-track faculty may appear to be the same. They have PhDs. Students call them “professor.”

But when it comes to stability, they’re worlds apart. Adjuncts rarely get health care. They’re generally paid between $3,000 and $7,000 per class, and you might have to drive considerable distances to get from one job to another.

Over 30 percent of nontenure-track educators in higher education make under $25,000 a year, according to a 2019 survey by the American Federation of Teachers . Another 30 percent make between $25,000 and $50,000 a year. But over the past few decades, the number of adjuncts has grown much faster than the ranks of full-time faculty.

The dearth of jobs has been particularly tough on those in the social sciences, humanities, and some sciences, including biology. Richard Larson, a professor of data, systems, and society at MIT, has noted that many professors churn out lots of doctoral students over the course of their careers — and a good chunk of those students would like to be professors themselves.

But the math simply doesn’t work. Only a few of those grad students — fewer than 20 percent — can get the sort of job that their advisers have. (Though there are certainly disciplines — including chemical engineering and computer science — in which graduates can find jobs fairly easily, often in industry.)

Kristina Aikens, who earned her PhD in English from Tufts University, initially tried to piece together a living as an adjunct. For a year and a half, she says, she was teaching four or five classes in two or three locations, which is a common — though brutal — workload.

Aikens doesn’t believe that doctoral students — particularly in humanities — understand the real threat of finding themselves in an unstable position. “I think people think it won’t happen to them,” she says. “It’s not because they think that they’re better than anyone else. It’s just a denial that they’re in.”

But the threat of job instability is considerable. Massachusetts is not only the state with the highest percentage of people with undergraduate degrees; it also has the highest percentage of those with graduate degrees . And while many of those degree holders are thriving, too many live in precarious situations — situations made all the more precarious by the extraordinarily high cost of housing in the Boston area.

So if the supply of academic jobs has waned, why don’t doctoral programs simply slim down and admit fewer students?

Most of the people I spoke with noted that professors may be loath to give up their graduate students because they genuinely enjoy working with them. Grad students can talk about esoteric areas of scholarship, built on years of deep study.

“I think that faculty want to believe that they’re doing good,” says Wood. “I think that graduate deans generally believe that graduate education does good. And the fact that universities have paid so little attention to career outcomes means that they don’t actually have good data to work with.”

It’s also possible that schools’ reluctance to admit fewer graduate students is financially motivated. Universities often run on the work of grad students, as the Boston University strike has demonstrated . Grad students teach sections of large classes. They work in labs. They perform in-the-field research.

“The business model only works with a lot of cheap labor,” Corbin says. “I think it’s bad. I think it’s bad for students. I think it’s bad for the classroom. I think it’s bad for the grad students and the perennial adjuncts.” But, he believes, doctoral students represent an enormous pool of untapped talent.

Corbin is now a tenure-track researcher in neurology at Harvard Medical School, with a secondary appointment in bioethics. It’s a job he likes, and life feels much more stable. “It’s becoming less desperate,” he says.

Aikens — who now serves as the program director of writing support at Tufts — says she doesn’t regret getting a doctorate, and she doesn’t think we should preclude people from pursuing that sort of intense study.

Coming from a working-class background in West Virginia, she had wanted to see if she could do it. And the six years she spent getting a PhD were hard. But she knew that success wouldn’t necessarily lead to employment:

“At my graduation, literally at the ceremony, I turned to my friend and said: ‘Should I apply to law school? Because I don’t think this is going to work out.’”

New studies pave the way for a brighter, more resilient future for nurses and healthcare professionals through a Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership training program

The evaluation of a new leadership training program grounded in Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SBNH-L) for nurses and healthcare leaders shows promising results. In the recently published evaluation articles Evaluation of the effectiveness of a Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership program aimed at building leadership capacity: A concurrent mixed-methods study and Nursing leaders’ perceptions of the impact of the Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership program three months post training , program participants reported higher workplace satisfaction, increased well-being at work, and lower stress levels three months post-training program. These results speak volumes about the effectiveness of the program given that the program was offered at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nursing retention is a longstanding global challenge that has been further exacerbated by what’s been called “the great resignation” – a massive post-pandemic exit of nurses from the healthcare system. Leadership is a key factor influencing nurses’ retention, health, and the quality of nursing care. These evaluation studies are the first of their kind to use a mixed-method approach to explore nursing leaders’ perceptions of the leadership program and they reinforce the importance of using an SBNH-L lens when tackling leadership in healthcare settings. "We are happy to see such profoundly positive changes resulting from the SBNH-L program,” says Mélanie Lavoie-Tremblay RN, PhD, lead author and co-investigator on the SSHRC/CIHR Partnership Grant that funded the SBNH-L Program and its evaluation. “These findings highlight the critical importance of nurturing leadership within the healthcare sector based on identifying, mobilizing and capitalizing on the strengths of nurse leaders and their teams."

Nursing and healthcare leaders are central to mobilizing their clinical teams and helping healthcare organizations reach their patient care objectives. The SBNH-L training program was designed to build the leadership capabilities of nurse and healthcare leaders, helping learners to develop the knowledge and skills required to create an SBNH culture. Program participants were trained to uncover and develop strengths to promote and support leadership, which in turn they can bring to their teams to create healthy and productive environments.

The study’s qualitative analysis highlighted the transformative journey that SBNH-L program participants embarked upon. Three dominant themes emerged from the studies that helped provide deeper insights into the mechanisms driving this change. Participants emphasized a shift towards focusing on people's strengths instead of weaknesses, they incorporated structured approaches and language rooted in SBNH values, and lastly, they established robust support networks through mentorship. The program acted synergically to foster teamwork, create a positive work environment, and show appreciation for staff.

“It’s heartening to have the empirical evidence that a model of leadership and a model of patient care align. Both are grounded in the same foundations and values whereby leaders and clinicians are guided by the same philosophy, anchored in similar values. Both affirm the importance of a human-centered approach where relationships and strengths are its core. This is critical in creating healthy-productive workplaces for staff and creating conditions for health and healing for patients and their families,” says Laurie Gottlieb, RN, PhD, creator of SBNH.

About the SBNH-L Program

The SBNH-L Program was developed and delivered as part of Principal Investigator Laurie Gottlieb’s research partnership Transforming Nurses’ Work Environments Through a Strengths-Based Leadership and Management Training Program (2018-2025) thanks to the support of a CIHR and SSHRC Partnership Grant. This unique, online, six-month program enabled participants to develop their knowledge and skills required to create equitable, culturally safe workplace cultures and environments that honour, develop, mobilize, and capitalize on the strengths of individuals and their team.

The SBNH-L Program was delivered to 121 participating staff from five Canadian healthcare institutions in two cohorts. Participants included nurse managers, nurse leaders, nurse educators, nurses, other healthcare leaders/managers, and those in advanced practice roles. This program included 12 learning modules, a six-month mentorship component, and the support to advance a capstone change project in the workplace.

A holistic approach to leadership

Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership allows leaders to deepen their knowledge of leadership and management principles through a Strengths-Based approach, enabling them to create healthy and productive environments for point-of-care providers and patients. It's a unique, value-driven, embodied approach that guides leaders and managers to create equitable, culturally safe workplace cultures that honour, develop, mobilize, and capitalize on the strengths of individuals and their team. SBNH leaders enable individuals, teams, and organizations to provide knowledgeable, compassionate, safe, high-quality person-centered care.

SBNH-L is derived from Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare, a value-driven philosophy and approach to guide clinicians, leaders, educators, and researchers. SBNH is grounded in concepts of person and family centered care, relationships, empowerment, innate and acquired capacities (strengths); and operationalized through eight core values (Gottlieb, 2013).
