Frequently Asked Questions

How many years is a phd in medicine.

A PhD in Medicine can take between three and six years to complete.

Is a PhD the Same as a Medical Doctor?

A medical doctor does not necessarily need a PhD, as they can qualify with a medical degree. Additionally, a PhD is usually a research degree, not as focused on patient care.

Is a PhD Higher than an MD?

No. Both PhD and MD degrees are doctorate qualifications, but usually with different applications.

Can a PhD be a Medical Doctor?

You can be qualified as a medical doctor without a PhD in medicine, though a doctor can pursue a PhD if they wish. However, an MD degree, which is also a doctoral degree in medicine, is generally more useful for medical practitioners.

Who Makes More Money, a PhD or MD?

There’s not much difference between an MD and PhD regarding benefits and earning potential. However, an MD may attract a slightly higher salary as practitioners are popular and in high demand. While a PhD salary can be comparable, there may not be as many academic and research positions available.

What Can You Do with a PhD in Medicine?

A PhD in medicine qualifies you to hold well-respected positions in academic research centers or teaching hospitals. Additionally, you can continue as a medical practitioner at a higher level.

What is a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) program?

An MD is a graduate program designed for already-qualified surgeons and physicians. It involves rigorous clinical training and coursework to prepare medical professionals for a more advanced level of specialization.

M.D. Program

Research opportunities, a passion for discovery.

Research is the lifeblood of Johns Hopkins. Scientists and physicians alike, as well as the students they mentor, pursue knowledge “to identify and answer fundamental questions in the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of disease, in health care delivery and in the basic sciences,” in accordance with to the School of Medicine’s mission.

Medical students in the M.D.-Ph.D. program typically have research-based career aspirations, and certainly Johns Hopkins offers an extraordinary array of research topics to interest them. While M.D.-only students are not required to do research during their years here, the vast majority of them ultimately choose to do so. Chalk it up to the intellectual curiosity that seems to be infectious at Johns Hopkins.

Students and Research

The pursuit of original knowledge is at the heart of the Genes to Society curriculum . The 18-month long Scholarly Concentration provides the opportunity to pursue basic or clinical research, or to investigate such topics as the history of medicine, public health or bioethics. Depending on the student’s interests and the degree they are pursuing, research experiences can range from two-month electives to a year or more of leave for extended study.

Every summer, nearly 100 students pursue investigations of all types with support from Johns Hopkins-sponsored grants. Given the highly collaborative nature of the Johns Hopkins educational approach, students aren’t simply involved in research; they power it. Working closely with their faculty advisers, the young researchers are active participants in discovery here at Johns Hopkins.

Doctoral Degrees

A doctoral degree requires the satisfactory completion of an approved program of advanced study and original research of high quality..

Please note that the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Science (ScD) degrees are awarded interchangeably by all departments in the School of Engineering and the School of Science, except in the fields of biology, cognitive science, neuroscience, medical engineering, and medical physics. This means that, excepting the departments outlined above, the coursework and expectations to earn a Doctor of Philosophy and for a Doctor of Science degree from these schools are generally the same. Doctoral students may choose which degree they wish to complete.

Applicants interested in graduate education should apply to the department or graduate program conducting research in the area of interest. Some departments require a doctoral candidate to take a “minor” program outside of the student’s principal field of study; if you wish to apply to one of these departments, please consider additional fields you may like to pursue.

  • American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) Overseas Assistance Grant AMWA provides small grants, up to $1,500,  for assistance with transportation costs (airfare, train fare, etc.) connected with pursuing medical studies in an off-campus setting where the medically neglected will benefit. The Grants are awarded to national AMWA members completing their second, third or fourth year of an accredited U.S. medical or osteopathic medical school or a resident who will be spending a minimum of six weeks and no longer than one year in a sponsored program which will serve the needs of the medically underserved.
  • International Society of Travel Medicine  The ISTM Research  Award program provides moderate grants (between USD 5,000 and USD 10,000) each year through a peer-review process implemented by the ISTM Research and Grants Committee. These grants are designed to stimulate travel medicine research by supporting comprehensive research projects or, for larger projects, providing support for pilot studies to enable researchers to collect data/test hypotheses so that they can then apply to other agencies for more substantive research grants.
  • Remote Area Medical The Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corps is a non-profit, volunteer, airborne relief corps dedicated to serving mankind by providing free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States and the world. Volunteer doctors, nurses, pilots, veterinarians and support workers participate in expeditions (at their own expense) in some of the world's most exciting places. Medical supplies, medicines, facilities and vehicles are donated. To volunteer as a student, you must have school sponsorship and supervision in the form of a licensed practitioner. RAM aims at development rather than dependence so volunteers are typically involved in education and organization as much as direct health care service.
  • Volunteer Missionary Movement The Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM)  was founded in 1969 by Edwina Gateley, an English laywoman, in response to a need for lay people to become more deeply involved in the mission life of the Church. After spending three years in Uganda, where she opened a very successful school for young girls and worked as a teacher, she returned to England and began to recruit and train volunteer missionaries to work in education, healthcare and pastoral projects in eastern Africa. As VMM became more widely known, it was able to send volunteers to communities in need throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Transportation, housing, and food can be covered by the organization.
  • Unite for Sight Global Impact Corps Unite For Sight supports eye clinics in  Ghana, India and Honduras by investing human and financial resources in their social ventures to eliminate patient barriers to eye care. Unite For Sight applies best practices in eye care, public health, volunteerism, and social entrepreneurship to achieve our goal of high-quality eye care for all. Global Impact Fellows are volunteers that range from undergraduate students to medical students, public health students and professionals, nurses, educators, opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists. They receive all necessary training from Unite For Sight so that they are able to assist the local doctors with global health delivery. Global Impact Fellows participating with Unite For Sight abroad have the option to also design and pursue a global health research study.

The “International PhD Programme for Medical Doctors”, EMERALD, trains and nurtures excellent physician-scientists. The programme recruits medical doctors to carry out a PhD in cutting-edge research in one of the eight recruiting European centres of excellence in life sciences and biomedicine. The recruited medical doctors will acquire unique scientific, technical, and digital skills and knowledgeto advance their careers at the frontier of medicine and research, with the final goal to improve patient care and tackle global health challenges.

Biomedical research is advancing at high speed. In the last decades, we have seen major developments resulting in a significantly better understanding of the biological processes causing disease and improved treatment and healthcare. However, translating results obtained in the lab to clinical practice is often a difficult process. It requires both knowledges of medicine and biology, and experience with academic research and clinical practice. Addressing the increased need for innovative solutions in medicine requires more than ever the rise of the unique professional profile of physician-scientists, combining research with clinical care, understanding patients’ needs and driving research forward to address them.

New Graduate Entry Medical course welcomed by health sector leaders

Health sector leaders have welcomed an innovative accelerated Medicine course run by the UEA to train more qualified doctors and progress them into jobs across the East of England.

UEA's new Graduate Entry Medical course will begin training students from September 2025.

Bringing graduates in from a range of disciplines, the new four-year course is one year shorter than a standard medical degree course without compromising on quality. It is now open for applications.

UEA Vice-Chancellor Prof David Maguire said: “This innovative four-year course will help to secure the future workforce for our NHS services. The course will give newly qualified doctors the skills and knowledge they need to tackle health inequalities across our region, particularly those associated with rural and coastal communities.”

The Graduate Entry Medical course will be held in the University’s Norwich Medical School, with medical students on the course based at Norwich Research Park and given unique access to the state-of-the-art facilities at the James Paget University Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust and the  Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).

The students will also benefit from the immersive teaching spaces, improved preparation areas, and high-tech teaching facilities in the new Anatomy Suite, which is set to become operational during 2026.

Jo Segasby , Chief Executive, James Paget University Hospital said: “ The James Paget has a strong track record in working with education partners to develop different routes into healthcare, so that people from our community are given the chance to train and work at their local hospital.

“The introduction of the Graduate Entry Medical Course continues that work, providing a unique opportunity for local graduates to undergo training locally and then consider developing their career within the Norfolk and Waveney healthcare system.

“We are proud of our strong links with UEA which have been essential in helping us develop our workforce over the years. The introduction of this latest course will help build on this strong partnership, for the benefit of both our patients and our organisation.”

Dr Rebecca Martin, Medical Director from The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn  Foundation NHS Trust said: “This is great news for our region in providing another route into medicine from next September. I welcome this important initiative which will support bringing more doctors to Norfolk and the surrounding area.”

Dr Bernard Brett,  Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Interim Medical Director , said: “This is great news for the region, which is providing another important route into medicine where students will be able to train at the excellent facilities here at our hospital and the UEA from next September. Norfolk is an incredible place to study and work and this partnership will help to develop our future homegrown medical workforce.”

UEA also continues to push for the establishment of a dental school to serve the region.

East Anglia is the only region of England that does not have a dental school and consequently struggles to recruit and retain dentists, making the region the most underserved area in the UK for dental care. According to recent data from the Local Government Association, Norfolk and Waveney has one of the lowest numbers of dentists per 10,000 people in the country.

UEA continues to make the case for undergraduate dental training in the East of England. We are advancing discussions with the General Dental Council and the Office for Students and continue to work relentlessly with our regional partners on dental development activities, including post graduate training to tackle the oral health crisis in Norfolk and continue to be an important provider of health skills for our region.”
