How to Edit Your Personal Statement (7 Review Tips)

  • By Med School Insiders
  • March 28, 2023

Your personal statement is one of the most vital pieces of your medical school application. You may have scored a perfect 528 on the MCAT, but it won’t matter if your personal statement is an uninspired rehash of your CV. How do you ensure you tell your story in an engaging way? How do you ensure your writing is faultless? Learn how to edit your personal statement and make revisions in order to impress admissions committees.

It only takes one mistake to sink an otherwise excellent personal statement. Keep in mind that you’re going up against thousands of other medical school applicants, many of whom have the exact same qualifications as you. Do not allow simple mistakes to ruin your chances of acceptance. Below we’ll break down seven review tips you can use to edit your personal statement to ensure you earn the acceptance you’ve been working toward for so many years.

Why the Personal Statement is Important

Your personal statement is the most intimate piece of your medical school application. It’s your opportunity to show an admissions committee who you are, what drives you, and what you have to offer; in other words, it’s your chance to sell yourself.

While your MCAT score and scholastic accomplishments may be impressive, the numbers don’t actually speak for themselves. Anybody can do well in school; admissions committees want to know who you are beyond your grades in order to determine if you fit the mold of the kind of student they want to join their program. Do you have the kind of passion and dedication needed to not only get by but to flourish in medical school? This is where the personal statement comes in.

Why do you want to be a doctor? What makes you uniquely qualified to attend medical school? What about your past makes you stand out as an applicant? How do you know you have what it takes to win acceptance and one day become a practicing physician?

Your personal statement is your chance to define who you are in your own words. Admissions committees look at personal statements very closely, so it’s important that you start early and give yourself plenty of time to conceptualize, write, and revise your personal statement.

Read our complete Personal Statement Guide , which outlines 11 steps to writing a personal statement.

How to Edit Your Personal Statement

1 | give ample time to the editing process.

Pencil breaking on paper

Crafting and editing your personal statement is going to take a great deal of time. This isn’t something you can slam out in a few hours—it’s not even something you can complete effectively in a few days. Getting your first draft done is excellent, but the work is far from over.

Get started on your personal statement early so that you have plenty of time to edit your work. It will likely take several drafts before you land on something that will impress admissions committees. You will also need to get other people to read and edit your personal statement, and this takes time too. You may think your personal statement is ready to submit until your mentor comes back and tells you that your central theme doesn’t work, and it might be best to look for another angle.

But don’t be discouraged—it’s all part of the process. A half-baked and rushed personal statement could completely derail your chances of acceptance. Your personal statement is one of the most vital pieces of your medical school application, so devote as much time as possible to the process.

2 | Take Time Away From Your Work

Once you complete a draft of your personal statement, step away from your laptop and do something completely unrelated. Go for a walk, read a book, go to the gym, or hangout with your friends or family. The personal statement needs time to sit.

After a break, come back to the personal statement with a clear head and fresh perspective. You may discover that the opening line you were so proud of an hour ago doesn’t sound quite as spectacular as you thought it did. By contrast, you could also find that one of the anecdotes you weren’t sure you should include actually ties the whole thing together.

Take time away from your personal statement and come back to it so that you can evaluate your work as objectively as possible.

3 | Read It Out Loud

Read your personal statement back to yourself out loud. Reading it out loud will slow you down and force you to look at each word individually.

This process will help you feel confident about what you’ve written while also pointing out areas of the personal statement that don’t sound quite right once said out loud. How does the personal statement flow? Does one point lead into the next? Are there any areas that are difficult to read?

If you have trouble reading or comprehending your own writing, other people definitely will too. Use reading your personal statement out loud as a chance to experience your personal statement as someone else would. Look for inconsistencies, errors, pacing, and anything else that detracts from the quality of your writing.

4 | It’s Okay to Start Over

Woman unhappy reading a paper Bad Personal Statement Examples

Premeds often get attached to the first draft of their personal statement. When in the editing and revising phase, be open to any and all suggestions you receive. You don’t have to take every suggestion, but you should consider each one.

Don’t let pride get in the way, especially when receiving advice from people who have succeeded in writing a personal statement or have served on admissions committees before.

It’s okay to start over—in fact, most premeds go through multiple iterations of their personal statement. Some applicants write multiple different personal statements entirely before reaching the best direction to take their essay. Don’t get disheartened if you need to start over or switch to another idea. This is part of the process. It doesn’t mean you’re doing a bad job if you have to start again; it means you’re committed to writing the best personal statement possible.

If someone with admissions committee experience or a reputable paid editing service suggests you take your personal statement in another direction, take that advice to heart. These people have a deep understanding of the medical school admissions process. Your personal statement could be extraordinary, but the story you choose to tell may be generic and overdone. Or you may mention something that could leave a negative connotation, such as mentioning anything that reminds adcoms of drug-seeking behavior.

Starting over is not a failure. It’s part of your journey to perfect your personal statement.

Learn more: Bad Personal Statement Examples and What to Do Instead .

5 | Use Editing Tools

You have come too far to let a simple spelling or grammar mistake ruin your chances of acceptance. Doctors must be patient, precise, and exacting—spelling mistakes make you look either careless or out of your depth intellectually, both of which are terrible messages to convey to an admissions committee.

Turn on spellcheck, but also utilize external editing tools like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor to catch spelling mistakes, comma errors, passive voice, structural issues, and readability.

6 | Don’t Rely on Editing Tools Exclusively

While editing apps are effective at catching most spelling and grammar mistakes, what they don’t understand is context. Do not rely on editing apps exclusively, as their capabilities are somewhat limited.

Consider each suggestion before accepting it. Don’t assume that the spellchecker is making an accurate suggestion. These tools can misunderstand your context, which will cause them to make an incorrect suggestion. This doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable—you should definitely take advantage of these tools—but you can’t rely on them alone.

Human editors are able to take context into account. Ask friends, family, or mentors you trust to edit your personal statement as well. When you ask someone to edit your essay, be clear about what they are editing for. Are they simply editing for flow and grammatical errors because they don’t have a deep understanding of medical school personal statements? Or are they editing the content, context, and narrative of your personal statement?

7 | Get Advice From People With Adcom Experience

Tow people with computers tutoring

Editing your personal statement yourself or having friends and family give you feedback is not enough. You must have your personal statement edited by people who understand the medical school application process—ideally, people who have actually served on admissions committees before.

These people can edit beyond spelling and grammar, providing you with an insider’s perspective on what will actually impress admissions committees. This type of feedback will help you produce a unique and stand out personal statement that goes above and beyond what other candidates produce.

We don’t need to remind you that there is steep competition to get into medical school, and gaining every edge you can on other candidates is a must, especially if you have competitive programs in mind. Even a good personal statement can fall short if the content is too similar to what admissions committees see over and over again.

If you don’t have a mentor, advisor, or family member with adcom experience to edit your essay, seek out a reputable admissions consultant service. Ensure the service you choose is run by real doctors who have admissions committee experience. If you are unsure—ask. You don’t need another grammar edit; you need professional advice from people who intimately understand how the admissions process works and what schools are looking for in medical school candidates.

  • Prianka DeSouza "Admissions Essay Improved" I was very confused with the differences between the different parts of my college application, especially how much personal information to include. But my editor was so helpful and explained to me where I could include more about myself and even gave me some examples for writing these sections. I’ll probably use this service again for graduate school.
  • David Wilson "Thank you for editing my SOP" Thank you very much for your editing of my SOP. I really appreciate your comments on my writing. Your editing made my SOP much more clear and convincing, and your advice helped me think about what I really want to tell the admissions committee. Now I am confident with my application.

Residency personal statement help

Professionals from our residency personal statement writing service believe a personal statement is a decision-maker when it comes to selecting people for a medical residency program or fellowship. Creating this kind of document can be a stern challenge. If you would like to be a radiologist, pathologist, cardiologist, or family doctor, a decent personal statement is a pivotal part of your application. No matter if you are looking for an advantage over other applicants or some idea of how to start composing your document, writing a personal statement is uneasy. You have only one opportunity to impress the committee as favorably as possible! Our expert writers are able to craft a fabulous residency personal statement that will make you appear different from the rest of the candidates. Bear in mind ordering a residency application personal statement from our devoted team of specialists so as not to miss a chance to invest in your future career!

How important your residency statements are

A residency statement is just one piece of your application. However, they are often the most important. Many of the other applicants will have the same qualifications and experience as yours. Thus, your personal statement is the only method that you can use to make your application stand out from the crowd. Nevertheless, composing a personal statement for the residency that is going to be effective is not simple at all.

Many applicants can struggle for a long while with their writing and still submit a statement that they are unhappy with. People are merely not sure about what they should include in their statements and how to craft something that will truly get them noticed. That’s why so many applicants turn to professional residency personal statement help.

What should your ERAS personal statement include?

Every personal statement must be as unique as possible. There are also some things that you must always ensure that you cover to show the committee that you are the right person for the program. These will usually include all of the following:

  • Why do you have a strong interest in the field in which you are applying? What has made you interested, and how have you developed that interest?
  • What skills and other attributes do you have that will ensure that you will be a success in this field?
  • What are your future goals for your career in this field? Why have you chosen this specific residency program and not another?

Residency personal statements by expert writers and proofreaders

Getting selected for a post-graduate residency program is a hard task. The number of residency programs that are federally funded is capped. It is not likely to change so far, though the number of first-year medical students and, therefore, that of residency application personal statements is increasing, and medical organizations require the government to solve this. The situation can become different, but not soon. Talking of US medical graduates, they typically finish their studies with $200K in student loan debt on average.

It may be considerably hard for a medical student to compose a professional medical residency personal statement not only due to the formatting but the time and effort that are needed. Students also lack time to create a powerful statement because their schedules are busy.

Moreover, students are not taught how to recommend themselves. Similar to a professional resume, a personal statement needs a mix of creativity, writing skills, and knowledge of what the reader anticipates. That’s why an ideal surgical residency personal statement must also contain other things. That’s where we can help you succeed. We realize the significance of a high-quality residency personal statement and truly have the desire to assist you!

What ERAS application documents can we help with?

Our experts have vast experience in creating residency application documents, so they will surely do what you need. It can include all of the following:

  • PERSONAL STATEMENT. Writing a personal statement for the residency is complicated, but our specialists will make it easy for you. They work directly with you to make sure that your writing will fully reflect just what the committee wants to see. Writing is unique and corresponds with the standards to get you noticed.
  • CV OR RESUME. Just as with a job, you will need to ensure that your resume perfectly reflects just what they are seeking. Our specialists know how to present info in a way that will be obvious to the reader.
  • LETTER OF INTENT. Our specialists can make sure that your reasons for application are clear and compelling and make your letter different from many others that will be read. We work with you to ensure that you will get the best results, and you will always receive a letter that is written perfectly.
  • LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION. A good reference can go a long way to helping the applicant win a place. However, it is far from easy to write. It is not just a matter of what you say. It is also a matter of what you fail to say. Our specialists will work with you to ensure that you will submit an LoR that will be highly effective.

Hackers may have stolen your Social Security number in a massive breach. Here's what to know.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: August 19, 2024 / 9:51 AM EDT / CBS News

A new lawsuit is claiming hackers have gained access to the personal information of "billions of individuals," including their Social Security numbers, current and past addresses and the names of siblings and parents — personal data that could allow fraudsters to infiltrate financial accounts or take out loans in their names.

The allegation arose in a lawsuit filed earlier this month by Christopher Hofmann, a California resident who claims his identity theft protection service alerted him that his personal information had been leaked to the dark web by the "nationalpublicdata.com" breach. The lawsuit was earlier reported by Bloomberg Law.

The breach allegedly occurred around April 2024, with a hacker group called USDoD exfiltrating the unencrypted personal information of billions of individuals from a company called National Public Data (NPD), a background check company, according to the lawsuit. Earlier this month, a hacker leaked a version of the stolen NPD data for free on a hacking forum, tech site Bleeping Computer reported .

That hacker claimed the stolen files include 2.7 billion records, with each listing a person's full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and phone number, Bleeping Computer said. While it's unclear how many people that includes, it's likely "that everyone with a Social Security number was impacted," said Cliff Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at The National Cybersecurity Alliance, a nonprofit that promotes online safety.

"It's a reminder of the importance of protecting yourself, because clearly companies and the government aren't doing it for us," Steinhauer told CBS MoneyWatch.

In a statement posted to its website, NPD said the breach involved a "third-party bad actor that was trying to hack into data in late December 2023, with potential leaks of certain data in April 2024 and summer 2024."

The company added that it is working with law enforcement and government investigators. NPD said it "will try to notify you if there are further significant developments applicable to you."

Here's what to know about the alleged hack.

What is National Public Data?

National Public Data is a data company based in Coral Springs, Florida, that provides background checks for employers, investigators and other businesses that want to check people's backgrounds. Its searches include criminal records, vital records, SSN traces and more information, its website says.

There are many similar companies that scrape public data to create files on consumers, which they then sell to other businesses, Steinhauer said.

"They are data brokers that collect and sell data about people, sometimes for background check purposes," he said. "It's because there's no national privacy law in the U.S. — there is no law against them collecting this data against our consent."

What happened with the USDoD hack?

According to the new lawsuit, USDoD on April 8 posted a database called "National Public Data" on the dark web, claiming to have records for about 2.9 billion individuals. It was asking for a purchase price of $3.5 million, the lawsuit claims.

However, Bleeping Computer reported that the file was later leaked for free on a hacker forum, as noted above.

How many people have been impacted?

The number of people impacted by the breach is unclear. Although the lawsuit claims "billions of individuals" had their data stolen, the total population of the U.S. stands at about 330 million. The lawsuit also alleges that the data includes personal information of deceased individuals.

Bleeping Computer reports that the hacked data involves 2.7 billion records, with individuals having multiple records in the database. In other words, one individual could have separate records for each address where they've lived, which means the number of impacted people may be far lower than the lawsuit claims, the site noted.

The data may reach back at least three decades, according to law firm Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe, which said on Monday it is investigating the breach.

Did NPD alert individuals about the hack?

It's unclear, although the lawsuit claims that NPD "has still not provided any notice or warning" to Hoffman or other people affected by the breach.

"In fact, upon information and belief, the vast majority of Class Members were unaware that their sensitive [personal information] had been compromised, and that they were, and continue to be, at significant risk of identity theft and various other forms of personal, social, and financial harm," the lawsuit claims.

Information security company McAfee reported that it hasn't found any filings with state attorneys general. Some states require companies that have experienced data breaches to file reports with their AG offices.

However, NPD posted an alert about the breach on its website, stating that it believes the information breached includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and mailing addresses.

Can you find out if your data was part of the hack?

There are tools available that will monitor what information about you is available on the dark web, noted Michael Blair, managing director of cybersecurity firm NukuDo. Commonly breached data includes your personal addresses, passwords and email, he added.

One such service is how Hofmann, who filed the lawsuit, found out that his information has been leaked as part of NPD breach.

"Make sure to use reputable companies to look that up," Blair said.

What should I do to protect my information?

Security experts recommend that consumers put freezes on their credit files at the three big credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Freezing your credit is free, and will stop bad actors from taking out loans or opening credit cards in your name.

"The biggest thing is to freeze your credit report, so it can't be used to open new accounts in your name and commit other fraud in your name," Steinhauer said.

In its statement, NPD also urged people to put free fraud alerts on their accounts, which "tells creditors to contact you before they open any new accounts or change your existing accounts," it said. You'll have to contact just one of the three credit bureaus to create a fraud alert, and that agency will alert the others.

Steinhauer recommends consumers take several additional steps to protect their data and finances:

  • Make sure your passwords are at least 16 characters in length, and are complex.
  • Use a password manager to save those long, complex passwords.
  • Enable multifactor authentication, which Steinhauer calls "critical," because simply using a single password to access your accounts isn't enough protection against hackers.
  • Be on alert for phishing and other scams. One red flag is that the scammers will try to create a sense of urgency to manipulate their victims.
  • Keep your security software updated on your computer and other devices. For instance, make sure you download the latest security updates from Microsoft or Apple onto your apps and devices.

You can also get a tracking service that will alert you if your data appears on the dark web.

"You should assume you have been compromised and act accordingly," Steinhauer said.

Bill Pascrell, longtime N.J. congressman and fierce Trump critic, dies at 87

WASHINGTON — Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell, whose career in rough-and-tumble New Jersey politics spanned four decades and who in his later years became known for his sharp barbs against Donald Trump, died Wednesday, his family said in a statement on his official X account.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning," the statement said. "As our United States Representative, Bill fought to his last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved. Bill lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served. He is now at peace after a lifetime devoted to our great nation America."

Pascrell died as Democrats are gathered for their convention in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris will accept her party's presidential nomination. Those who could pay tribute to Pascrell from the convention stage Wednesday include Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the former House speaker

"In the Congress, Congressman Pascrell has been a relentless champion of America’s working families — fighting for workers’ rights and investments in the education of our children," Pelosi, a fellow Italian American who served for decades with Pascrell, wrote in a post on X .

"He was a proud co-chair of the Congressional Italian-American Delegation and took great pride in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution — and he never let us forget any of it!"

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy , a Democrat, said Pascrell "will be remembered most fondly for leading the fight for our families in Congress over the past 27 years."

And House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on X that Pascrell's "was a life of service. Prior to Congress, Bill served his country honorably in the United States Army, and then his community of Paterson, NJ in local and state government. He will be missed."

Pascrell, who was in his 14th term, was hospitalized for nearly a month this summer after he experienced a fever related to a respiratory illness. He was discharged to a rehabilitation center on Aug. 7 but was re-admitted to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, just four days later.

Pascrell, a feisty octogenarian, was the second-oldest House member, behind only retiring Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif. The oldest member of Congress is Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who turns 91 on Sept. 17.

Pascrell was the second New Jersey congressman to die this year. Fellow Democrat Donald Payne Jr. died April 24 at age 65 after he suffered a heart attack related to diabetes complications.

Pascrell had been running for re-election to his 9th District seat in November.

Because the vacancy has occurred before an Aug. 27 deadline — 70 days before the general election — Democratic county committee members will be able to handpick a new nominee by Aug. 29, according to state election law.

Pascrell was the favorite against Republican Billy Prempeh, his opponent in his last two elections. In 2022, Pascrell defeated Prempeh by more than double digits, 55% to 43%, in the deep-blue 9th Congressional District; Joe Biden trounced Trump there in 2020 by 19 percentage points.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J.

The grandson of Italian immigrants, William James Pascrell Jr. was born on Jan. 25, 1937, in Paterson, New Jersey's third-largest city, where he would later be elected mayor. He served in the Army and the Army Reserve and was honorably discharged in 1967.

After having attended Fordham University, where he received a B.A. in journalism and an M.A. in philosophy, Pascrell taught high school history and was an adjunct professor.

He got his start in politics in the late 1970s through local school boards: first with the Paterson Board of Education, of which he was president, then as a member of Passaic County Community College’s Board of Trustees.

Pascrell won election to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1987. Just a few years later, he won the mayor’s race in Paterson and held both offices simultaneously — a common practice in the state at the time — until he was elected to Congress in 1996.

In Washington, Pascrell served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Homeland Security, Budget and Small Business committees. Since 2007, he had been a member of the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, where he led the fight for access to Trump's personal tax returns .

Throughout his time in Congress, Pascrell fought to restore the full state-and-local tax deduction, beneficial to his New Jersey constituents; develop offshore wind energy and other clean energy projects; and raise awareness of traumatic brain injury, specifically among service members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But a younger generation came to know Pascrell through his acerbic, unabashedly partisan attacks on Trump — delivered through the then-president’s favorite method of communication: Twitter, now known as X.

After Trump’s now-infamous “s-–-hole countries” remark, Pascrell tweeted that Trump had “made a fool of himself” on the world stage and was “showing his bigoted tendencies in ways that would make Archie Bunker blush.”

Later, he bashed Trump and “his soulless goons” for “ countless dead Americans ” over their handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

More recently, Pascrell had been posting daily on X : “Good morning. Republican donald trump is a convicted criminal,” with a photo of Trump and the word: “FELON.”

On May 12, Pascrell tweeted a dire warning about the possibility of a second Trump presidency.

“Numerous news reports and donald trump’s own words have revealed trump is planning to impose a dictatorship and use the military against his critics if he seizes power again,” he tweeted alongside a tank with a Trump sticker trampling over the American flag. “I am going to post this repeatedly so no one can say they haven’t been told.”

Pascrell is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Elsie Marie Botto; three children; and five grandchildren.

I used a professional editor and the difference was amazing! She charged $50 an hour and after I saw the result, I would have paid triple that! We conducted everything over email and her turn around was under 24 hours. Honestly, I would recommend her without reservation. Send me a message if you want her email/website

I've used IvyLeagueAdmission ($75 for a personal statement) to edit mine, and I can honestly say that it was one of the most worthwhile things I've paid for. Scratch that. I had to completely rewrite mine anyway

I'd get at least one family member or close friend to read over it to make sure it sounds like 'you'. It's important to have an essay that reflects who you are and why you are choosing medicine. Someone who knows you well may be able to point out something you missed or cut out something unnecessary.

I finalized editing my personal statement a few months ago and I used a wide variety of resources. I enlisted the help of family, friends, my pre-med advisor, campus tutoring services, and an online editing service. I didn't post mine to SDN for others to read, but you could also go that route I suppose. I shopped around for online editing companies for a while and finally went with Gurufi.com. I picked Brian as my editor only because he had the most amount of stellar reviews, but all the editors seemed very well qualified. Of all my resources, my Gurufi editor was by far the most helpful. It was roughly $100 although rates vary among editors I think. For me, at least, I could justify spending that money if it helps me get into medical school. In short, if you can get a personal statement you're happy with without paying, great. I was satisfied with my statement, by an experienced editor of this topic really made my personal statement stand out. I don't think I'll be missing that $100 in ten years.

lol...yeah I contemplated leaving out my editor's name for this very reason, but because the editor (and not the website) is actually doing the work, I just left it in. Similarly, I might not recommend a large medical practice as a whole, but rather individual physicians within the clinic. The first time I had my essay edited was via EssayEdge and although I opted to be randomly assigned to an editor, I wasn't happy with the edit at all. Sure I could see the editors' bios, but no actual reviews from real clients. I later went with Gurufi because I found an editor with high customer ratings and it was much cheaper than EssayEdge. Every online essay editing service is going to have good and not-so-good editors, so it's hard to recommend a website as a whole as the OP requested. I was just sharing my experience. My point is this - go with a company where you can pick your editor based on their feedback and your needs.

I agree with yasmin731's opinion. I contacted Brian at Gurufi.com and picked him as my editor. I can't imagine to complete my application without his help. Brain helped me in editing my personal statement and other mini writings. He is a talented man who has clearly worked hard at his job for a long time to be this good. Moreover, he knows what adcoms are expecting from PS and secondaries. I think the cost is reasonable. Hope this helps applicants who needs editing on their essay.
