Industry Analysis

The pet store industry is expected to grow over the next five years to over $24.5 billion. The growth will be driven by increased ownership of domestic animals and the increasing attention to pet care and pet needs that the U.S. population has embraced. Products and services yet to be developed will increase the demand for pet retail stores, as well as unique products, such as outdoor winter wear for dogs, that will generate additional revenue. In particular, the one-stop service retail style pet stores will increase as consumers choose to take care of buying products and services in an easy, less-complicated process. Costs will likely be reduced as supply chain issues of pet food products and pet products are solved and products are increasingly stocked into inventory and sold through a variety of channels, including retail stores and online website sales.

Customer Analysis

Competitive Analysis

Direct and indirect competitors.

Paws Pet Store will face competition from other companies with similar business profiles. A description of each competitor company follows.

Regal Pet Store

Regal Pet Store was established in 1998 by Earl Wagner, a resident of Fargo, North Dakota. The business is a direct competitor, registered as a sole proprietorship in North Dakota. The 4,000 square foot retail store provides a variety of products for domestic pet owners, specializing in cat and dog indoor play equipment. Additional services include a machine that creates pet name tags and a “puppy playhouse,” where puppies are occasionally sold by breeders.

The promise of Regal Pet Store is to “provide everything you need to keep healthy and happy pets.” The store follows a program that was instituted by Purina Feed Company in 1990, titled “Produce, Provide and Place into Inventory,” a system of inventory management that works on a just-in-time inventory-supply philosophy. This system does not advocate holding inventory within the retail store, but suggests there are advantages to restocking only when one product of any kind is remaining on the shelf. This means customers may not be able to view all available products or obtain products, as most of the inventory is one item as a sample only. The advantage for the store owner is that there is a low outlay of monies upfront; the disadvantage is that customers cannot find products readily available when needed.

Henderson’s Feed & Tack

This retail feed and tack store is an indirect competitor located in Fargo, which supplies farmers and ranch owners throughout the North Dakota region with a wide range of feed, farm supplies and medications for farm and ranch animals. In a small portion of the store, there are products offered for dogs and cats, including pet food and leashes.

Henderson’s Feed & Tack store was founded by John Middleson in 2010, after he experienced a lack of products and feed needed to supply his cattle on the family ranch. Incorporated in 2010 as a C-corporation, the store mainly offers feed bags for farm animals, such as chickens, goats, hogs, along with bulk amounts of hay, oats and corn for ranch animals, such as horses, dairy cows and cattle. The business has garnered a number of farm and ranch customers during the years, most of whom feed their dogs and cats with house table scraps or feed products from Henderson’s Feed & Tack.

This is an indirect competitor because the dog and cat food offerings are severely limited and the target group is tertiary to the primary purpose of the business. As the dogs are “working” dogs, they do not typically require toys, bedding and other domestic animal products. Cats are feral and used to keep the farm and barn areas free of mice, rats and snakes. They are also considered to be “working” cats and are not often domesticated as indoor pets.

Tiny’s Pet Trailer

Timothy Holbrook, also known as “Tiny” Holbrook, began selling pet food and pet supplies as a traveling salesperson in 2015. He registered his business as a sole proprietor and has traveled throughout the Fargo area during the ensuing years. His business is a direct competitor, although confined to his truck bed and a small converted 10-foot trailer that contains pet food and pet supplies. With the increasing cost of fuel and inventory, it is estimated that Timothy Holbrook may close this business within a year or two. At present, Tiny’s Pet Trailer provides a service during the winter months when most customers find it difficult to travel through harsh winter weather. Tiny’s Pet Trailer takes orders via phone and, when enough customers have requested service within a region or city area, Timothy will make a trip throughout the area to drop off requested supplies. The overhead for the retail service has increased as a result of economics, while the prices for products have increased, resulting in lower profits each year for the past six years. This is a seasonal business that operates during the winter months only.

Competitive Advantage

Paws Pet Store will be able to offer the following advantages over their competition:

Marketing Plan

Brand & value proposition.

Paws Pet Store will offer the unique value proposition to its clientele:

  • Highly-qualified team of skilled employees that is able to provide a comprehensive array of pet products and services in a one-stop store. This includes pet food, pet accessories, medications, and grooming products.
  • Exclusive outlet for patented dog winter-wear apparel. Preferred by dog handlers, trainers and dog sled owners across the midwest and northeast regions
  • Veterinarian care offering service hours by appointment
  • Dog grooming care offering service hours by appointment
  • Unbeatable pricing for clients, offering packages of services or products that can’t be met by any other retail pet store in Fargo

Promotions Strategy

The promotions strategy for Paws Pet Store is as follows:

Word of Mouth/Referrals

Paws Pet Store has built up an extensive list of contacts over the years by providing exceptional service and expertise for their owner’s website store customers. The online customers have indicated a desire to visit the retail store in the building in Fargo to view and purchase supplies not stocked online and take advantage of the dog grooming and veterinary services offered. Online customers will receive special discounts and packages when they sign up to visit and buy from the retail store in addition to website offerings. Customers have also indicated a desire to spread the word about the opening of the Paws Pet Store.

Professional Associations and Networking

Jack and Maryann Murray are members of several community organizations, as well as professional retail associations and specialty supplier networking groups. As such, they will increase their attendance and visibility in these groups and associations to increase awareness of their new store and announce the availability of the exclusive dog apparel line within the retail store.

Print Advertising

Direct mailers, in the form of invitations to the launch of Paws Pet Store, will be delivered to the 126,750 individuals residing in the city. The invitation will include a country dance, discounts on pet products, and a hog-calling contest in the city street. In addition, print ads with special discounts or offerings will be utilized in each week’s edition of the Fargo Times newspaper on Wednesdays, when retail ads are offered to customers.

Website/SEO Marketing

Paws Pet Store will utilize their in-house skills to build and sell products through their retail store business in addition to their already-established website business. The new website will be well organized, informative, and list all their services and will be differentiated from the original website with a different customer message and design throughout. The new website will also list their contact information and list their pet food and supplies available for delivery. Jack Murry will manage the SEO marketing tactics so that anytime someone types in the Google or Bing search engine “Fargo pet store” or “pet store near me”, Paws Pet Store will be listed at the top of the search results.

The pricing of Paws Pet Store will be moderate and on par with competitors so customers feel they receive excellent value when purchasing their services.

The following will be the operations plan for Paws Pet Store. Operation Functions:

  • Maryann Murray will be the Co-owner and President of the company. She will oversee all operations for inventory, networking and association relationships.

1. Develop A Pet Store Business Plan - The first step in starting a business is to create a detailed pet store business plan that outlines all aspects of the venture. This should include potential market size and target customers, the services or products you will offer, pricing strategies and a detailed financial forecast.

2. Choose Your Legal Structure - It's important to select an appropriate legal entity for your pet store business. This could be a limited liability company (LLC), corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks so it’s important to do research and choose wisely so that your pet store business is in compliance with local laws.

3. Register Your Pet Store Business - Once you have chosen a legal structure, the next step is to register your pet store business with the government or state where you’re operating from. This includes obtaining licenses and permits as required by federal, state, and local laws.

4. Identify Financing Options - It’s likely that you’ll need some capital to start your pet store business, so take some time to identify what financing options are available such as bank loans, investor funding, grants, or crowdfunding platforms.

5. Choose a Location - Whether you plan on operating out of a physical location or not, you should always have an idea of where you’ll be based should it become necessary in the future as well as what kind of space would be suitable for your operations.

6. Hire Employees - There are several ways to find qualified employees including job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed as well as hiring agencies if needed – depending on what type of employees you need it might also be more effective to reach out directly through networking events.

7. Acquire Necessary Pet Store Equipment & Supplies - In order to start your pet store business, you'll need to purchase all of the necessary equipment and supplies to run a successful operation.

8. Market & Promote Your Business - Once you have all the necessary pieces in place, it’s time to start promoting and marketing your pet store business. This includes creating a website, utilizing social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, and having an effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy. • How to Get Your Dog’s Paw Print: 7 Easy Steps

Cassidy Sutton Profile Picture

Click to Skip Ahead

If you’re looking for a simple yet fun craft project to do with your pet, then this is the project for you. Getting your dog’s paw print is super simple, and you can save it forever on paper or use it to get a tattoo. Most people use ink or paint, so that’s what we’re using in today’s craft.

In this guide, we teach you exactly what to do to go from pawless to picture paw-fect in just seven steps. Let’s start with gathering the materials.

  • Materials You’ll Need

To get started, you’ll need the following materials:

  • Paper, watercolor paper, or canvas
  • Pet-safe paint or ink pad in any color you want
  • Washcloth or pet-safe wipes
  • Pencils, markers, or additional paint to color and enhance your dog’s paw print
  • Picture frame (optional)
  • What Paints Are Safe for Pets?

Paints don’t typically say whether they are pet-safe or not, so it’s best to look out for paint that is:

  • Water-based
  • Carcinogen-free
  • Petrochemical-free
  • Heavy metal-free
  • Low-VOC or VOC-free

You’ll also want to avoid paints made with ammonia, polyurethane, and acetone. Acrylic paint found in craft aisles is perfect for this project since it’s water-based, washes easily, and dries quickly.

  •   Gather and set up your materials so they are ready to go to begin the project.
  •   Taking your dog’s paw, gently press it into the paint or ink pad, ensuring it covers the entire paw.
  •   Press the paw onto the paper or canvas, evenly distributing it on all sides.
  • Gently lift the paw straight up to avoid smearing.
  • Reward your pup with a treat and cleanse the paw.
  •   Repeat steps two through five as many times as needed.
  •   Let dry, decorate, and frame.
  • Helpful Tips for a Breezy Project

You really don’t know how to perfect a project until you do it. Even so, it helps to listen to the mistakes of others so you can learn faster.

  • Make sure your dog likes their paws being handled: Some dogs don’t like their paws being handled . If this is your dog, this project isn’t for you—not yet at least. Work with your dog on handling their paws. Ensure they can trust you; otherwise, they’ll never hand you their paws willingly.
  • Trim nails before beginning: No matter how nice your dog is, their nails can be sharp. Don’t risk cutting yourself. Trim the nails first before beginning.
  • Reward your pup: Maintain your dog’s trust and approval by offering tasty treats.
  • Clean paws between color swaps: Clean your dog’s paws in between colors to prevent mixing.
  • Moisturize paws before applying paint: For better results, try moisturizing your dog’s paws using a pet-safe moisturizer to smooth out calluses and cracks for an even paint coating.
  • Gentle Care For All Pets - Infused with moisturizing hypoallergenic ingredients & enriched with...
  • Deep Cleans From Head to Tail - Tackle the toughest dirt & messes with our extra strong pet wipes...
  • Freshness On The Go - Each dog grooming wipes pack contains 30 counts of premium dog wipes that...

If you're looking for an easy, safe way to clean your pet well-formulated wipes like Hepper's Wash Wipes might be just the thing. These premium wipes are designed to gently and effectively remove the dirt and grime that sticks to your pets's fur. The hypoallergenic formula is infused with soothing, moisturizing ingredients that are safe for all life stages.

At Pet Keen, we've admired Hepper for many years, and decided to take a controlling ownership interest so that we could benefit from the outstanding designs of this cool pet company!

  • Can I Get a Paw Print Without Ink or Paint?

If you don’t want to make a mess with ink and paint, no worries. Paint and ink aren’t the only mediums to get your dog’s paw print. You can try using clay instead.

Clay requires a few extra steps since there are different types of clay, and all require a specific level of attention to receive the desired results. Still, it’s relatively easy once you have all of the materials on hand. If you’ve ever baked cookies before, the process is very similar.

Obtaining your pet’s paw print is such a treasure. Once you have it, you never want to let it go. Some people go the extra step and get a tattoo of their dog’s paw print. You can absolutely do that if you wish, or just frame it. Either way, the paw print is here to stay.

Getting your dog’s paw print is a fun project for your kids or if you want to create a personalized piece of memorabilia that you’ll always have with you. Using the right materials and making sure your dog is comfortable will ensure that everyone enjoys the craft project.

There are three ways to get your dog’s paw print. You can use non-toxic ink or paint, make salt dough, or create a digital print with a photo. We cover the steps for the two last methods here.

Before You Start

DIY projects like getting your dog’s paw print are fun, but there are a few things to keep in mind before you start.

Use Non-toxic Materials

Your dog might be more than happy to take part in your DIY project, but this doesn’t mean you can use the first materials that you see. You need to make sure the dough, ink, or paint that you use is as safe for your pet as possible.

Only use water-based paints and inks, so they’re easy to clean up without chemicals. You’ll also need to double-check that the materials are non-toxic just in case your dog licks their paws before you can clean them up. Never leave your dog unattended with the ink, paint, or raw dough.

Ensure Comfort First

Always make sure your dog is comfortable when you include them in your DIY projects. If they’re not happy having their paws messed with, they might become aggressive to get you to leave them alone. Only try these tips if you know that your dog is happy to join in and will have fun too.

Clean Your Dog’s Paw

First, clean your dog’s paws with a damp cloth. This will help prevent any dirt from their outdoor adventures from mixing with the paint and ruining your pristine paw print design.

The best way to make sure your dog associates this with a positive experience is to reward them when the prints are made. Use their favorite treats to say, “thank you,” and, “well done,” for letting you borrow their paws for your DIY project. Their favorite treats will also help you keep their attention away from the ink or paint on their paws until you can clean up.

Method 1: How to Use Dough to Get Your Dog’s Paw Print

1. prepare the dough.

A cleaner alternative to inks and paints is dough. The best part is that you’ll likely already have all the ingredients that you need in your kitchen. To make the dough, you need:

  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup water

Add the water slowly until you can press the dough into a smooth ball or roll it into flat “cookies.” If you find that your dough is too sticky, add more flour to dry it out a bit.

Although this is a safe method of getting your dog’s paw print, never leave them unattended with the dough. The dough contains a large amount of salt. Eating it can cause salt poisoning (hypernatremia), which can result in signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, lack of appetite, lethargy, and incoordination. In severe cases, tremors, seizures, coma, and death can occur.

2. Create the Print

Once the raw dough is complete, it’s time to add your dog’s paw print. Your ball of dough needs to be soft enough that you don’t need much pressure to leave an imprint but firm enough that it doesn’t break into pieces. You can test it by creating an imprint of your own finger before you create your dog’s paw print.

When you’re happy with the dough, place it on a flat surface and cover it with wax paper. Make sure your dog is comfortable with you holding their paw and gently press your dog’s paw into the dough. If you’ve made enough dough, you can make more than one imprint and choose the best one. Remember to clean up properly and give your dog a treat for their patience.

3. Bake the Dough

With the print complete, shape the dough into a circle, heart, or another design, and place it on a baking tray. Preheat the oven to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and slowly bake the dough. This will take a while, but it’s important not to use a too-high temperature, or the dough might split while it’s being baked.

Check the dough regularly as it bakes until it’s completely dry—it might take 20–30 minutes or a little longer—and then set it aside to cool. You can leave it as-is, give it a glossy sheen with varnish or polyurethane, or paint it.

Method 2: How to Make a Digital Paw Print

1. take a photo of your dog’s paw.

Not all dogs like having their paws messed with, or maybe you don’t want to use ink, paint, or dough to make a print. Taking a photo of your dog’s paw is a simple and quick alternative that doesn’t require you to mess with sensitive paws too much.

Wait until your dog is asleep or otherwise relaxed, and carefully take a few pictures of their paw. You can ask a friend to help by distracting your dog or holding their paw so you can take a picture.

2. Edit Your Photo

For the best results, take several pictures of your dog’s paw so you can choose the best one. Once you’ve got a picture that you like, you can edit the photo yourself or invest in a company online that’ll do it for you.

If you plan on editing it yourself, you’ll need photo editing software and patience. Zoom in and outline the shape of your dog’s paw pad, and create a simple black-and-white print. Remember to save it and you’re done!

You can also hire a company to make a digital print for you. They’ll make a print from your dog’s paw print photo and make it into a framed picture or another type of memorabilia.

Final Thought

A keepsake of your dog’s paw print is the perfect way to decorate your home with personalized art and keep your pet with you always. Getting your dog’s paw print is easy, and there are three methods that you can try.

Non-toxic ink or paint and salt dough are the most common methods for dogs that don’t mind having their paws handled. If your dog is more nervous about their paws, though, you can take a picture of their paw and create a digital print or purchase a personalized dog paw print online.

What is a Print Shop Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your print shop business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Print Shop

If you’re looking to start a print shop business or grow your existing print shop company, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your print shop business to improve your chances of success. Your print shop business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Print Shop Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a print shop business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for print shop companies.

Finish Your Business Plan Today!

How to write a business plan for a print shop business.

If you want to start a print shop business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your print shop business plan.

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of print shop business you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a print shop business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of print shop businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.

  • Give a brief overview of the print shop industry.
  • Discuss the type of print shop business you are operating.
  • Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
  • Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
  • Offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Overview

In your company overview, you will detail the type of print shop business you are operating.

For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of print shop businesses:

  • Digital printing : This type of printing is one of the most cost-effective and fast printing processes available today. Electronic files and digital images replace the need for paper, press set-up and ink, which helps reduce the carbon footprint on the earth.
  • Offset lithography printing: Used for magazines, circulars, brochures and books, this type of print shop specializes in larger volumes and includes traditional methods of binding.
  • Screen printing: Any material that is not flat is a candidate for screen printing: shirts, hats, fabric bags, etc. Screen printing forces ink through a screening process that is replicated onto fabric or other materials used.
  • 3D printing: This type of printing is performed through design, initiated by a computer program, followed by the print process in a 3D printer. The 3D printer is calibrated and outfitted with special plastics to fulfill the specifications of the 3D computer program.

In addition to explaining the type of print shop business you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to questions such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of printing projects completed, the amount of revenue earned, or reaching X number of clients served, etc.
  • Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the print shop industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the print shop industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.

The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your print shop business plan:

  • How big is the print shop industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your print shop business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your print shop business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: individuals, schools, charitable organizations, corporations, and innovators.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of print shop business you operate. Clearly, individuals would respond to different marketing promotions than corporations, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Finish Your Print Shop Business Plan in 1 Day!

Don’t you wish there was a faster, easier way to finish your business plan?

With Growthink’s Ultimate Business Plan Template you can finish your plan in just 8 hours or less!

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other print shop businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. Stores that house copy machines or overseas service companies may be examples of indirect competitors. You will want to mention any direct competition, as well.

For each direct competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What type of print shop business are they?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide bundled services including printing and binding?
  • Will you offer large 3D printing projects that your competition doesn’t?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a print shop business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of print shop company that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide cover design, book layout and digital printing to create a niche service for authors?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the products and/or services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the site of your print shop company. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your print shop business located in a busy retail district, a business district, a standalone office, or purely online? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your print shop marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
  • Reach out to websites
  • Distribute flyers
  • Engage in email marketing
  • Advertise on social media platforms
  • Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your print shop business, including answering calls, planning and providing printed items or 3D printed items, billing customers and assisting with maintenance of equipment, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to book your Xth print project , or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your print shop business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your print shop business’ potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing print shop businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a print shop business or successfully running a small co-op of screen printers.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you see 5 new customers per day, and/or offer discounted packaged pricing? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your print shop business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a print shop business:

  • Cost of equipment and office supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your office location lease or a list of corporations on a monthly printing contract.

Writing a business plan for your print shop business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the print shop industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful print shop business.
