Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

There are no party or sales minimums, no recruiting or downline commission. You manage your own business and keep 100% of your party earnings - all while having the support and backing of a large national brand!
  • Do I have to be an artist? While it helps to be generally crafty, you do NOT have to be an artist to do this business! If you can read and follow instructions, you can do this biz! We do have a number of artists on our team (and thank goodness for that as they design all of our awesome artwork and projects!), but the majority of our members are, in fact, not artists. Just artsy people like you! This business is all about providing exceptional customer service and having an upbeat and fun personality. If you like people and like to party…you’ll be great at this!
  • What if I am an artist? GREAT! You can create your own artwork for your customers and can potentially earn commission on your artwork by selling it to other members!
  • How much can I earn? That is totally up to you. On average our members earn $200-$300 per event for in-home events and $400+ at larger events. You are your own boss and set your own schedule. There are no monthly party or sales minimums. We have members who do 1 or 2 parties a month for a little “fun money” up to members who work their business full time doing 10-15 parties a month. Whatever income level you are looking for, we can provide a plan to help you reach your goal!
  • What makes Artsy different than other in-home party services? The biggest difference is that we do not sell a product; our product is our service. People value experiences over stuff.   • Is there any product to buy? Here’s the best part – NO! There are so many different ways you can make money teaching art or doing crafts! Paint parties are a great way to get started because they’re fun, you don’t need any prior experience or training, and the potential for how much money you can make is almost limitless.

But the days of parties being limited to just in person is over, thanks to the internet! Zoom calls, Facebook lives, internet chats…there are a million ways to teach.

My advice? Don’t be afraid of trying out new ideas! You never know what will work until you try it out yourself.

Brushes, canvases, paint…and those are just the basics! If you’re planning on running paint parties at home, you’ll need to have all of the materials purchased and ready before your guests arrive.

You can easily save money by purchasing supplies in bulk at a local craft store. I like to shop at Michaels or Hobby Lobby when they have 40% off specials.

When it comes to paint and sip materials , you’ll need to buy canvases, brushes, paint, and other equipment for each guest. The cost of these items will vary according to the quality and quantity of the supplies you buy and where you buy them.

Wine, snacks and other refreshments

A lot of these paint parties are taught by professional artists. If you are hosting this party in your own home, having a professional artist come in may not be a viable option.

But, even if you aren’t a professional artist yourself, you don’t always need to spend a lot of money to hire someone to teach the class.

Consider a Virtual Sip and Paint Party

Another option would be to set up a screen and play an online painting tutorial for you and your guests to follow along with. One of the great things about doing a paint party this way is that everyone can work at their own pace.

You can always rewind the video if someone needs to go over any of the steps again.

When planning a DIY paint party, it is important to have at least a couple of sip and paint picture ideas for your guests to choose from.

I often tell paint party hosts to get their guests to vote on a couple of paint ideas, and the one with the most votes is the painting they will do.

What Will You Paint?

The next thing you need to consider is the painting that you will be doing. The final choice will depend on the skill level of those who will be attending.

If you and your guests are all beginners, it is best to choose a painting that is relatively simple to do. This is important if everyone is still learning about various art skills.

Flowers are always a great option for beginners, as well as simple landscapes. It is also recommended that you choose a painting that, for the most part, features primary colors.

That way you don’t have to worry about a lot of color blending, which is a more advanced technique.

On the other hand, if your guests already have some painting experience, you might want to choose something a bit more challenging for your paint night.

Don’t forget about the age group you will be working with, and choose the right painting for that age group.

What Paint Supplies Will You Need?

So, what do you need for a sip and paint ?

Once you have decided on what you and your guests will create during the painting party, you will need to go out and purchase all of the necessary supplies.

Obviously, the most important thing you will need to supply is plenty of acrylic paint, with all of the paint colors you will need.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to use professional art supplies from an art store for paint parties. In fact, most dollar stores carry everything you need for your sip and paint party, and you won’t have to spend a fortune.

In addition to acrylic paint, you are going to need the following paint supplies:

Paint Brushes

Make sure you have a fine-point paint brush, a medium paint brush, and a large, flat brush for each workstation. Check our guide on different types of paint brushes .

Each person will need to have their own canvas to paint on. The size of canvasses should be at least 11X14 inches.

There are many types of easels . It is also important to have an easel for each participant, so they have a way to hold their canvases in place.

Each person should have their own painting palette to use. You can either buy actual palettes or simply use paper plates that can be easily disposed of later.

How to Set Up the Workstations

Once you have all of the necessary paint supplies, it is time to set up the workstations for our painting party. One of the most important things to consider is lighting.

If you don’t have an actual paint studio already set up with proper lighting, you might want to consider placing some extra lamps around the room.

Space for Each Guest

You will need to make sure that you have enough space for each guest to be able to paint comfortably.

Protect Your Furniture

Paint parties can get quite messy, so it is important to make sure that you have the table covered. Then, if anyone does spill water or paint, it isn’t going to ruin your good dining room table.

Once again, your local dollar store is a great place to get what you need, including table covers. They always carry cheap, plastic tablecloths that you can use for paint parties.

Keep the Floors Clean

It is also a good idea to make sure that you have something to protect your floor, just in case paint or wine gets spilled. 

Again, those dollar store plastic tablecloths will come in quite handy to help you avoid a lot of cleanup after a sip and paint party. Or, you can also buy plastic sheets.

Provide Plenty of Snacks

Throughout the painting process, your guests will likely want to have something to nibble on. 

Make sure you have plenty of finger foods for your paint party that are easy to eat and won’t be overly messy. Some snack suggestions include a few bowls of potato chips, cheese and crackers, etc.

Don’t Forget the Beverages

Are you supplying the wine or other party drinks for your paint party, or is it going to be a bring-your-own-booze type of event? 

If you are supplying beverages, make sure that you also have some coffee, tea, juice, water, and soda for those who do not drink alcohol. Sip parties are for everyone, not just those who want to enjoy a few drinks at sip nights.

There should also be a wine glass for each guest. Make sure you have plenty of glasses, even if your guests are bringing their own drinks.

It’s important to make sure that all of your guests are above the legal drinking age to avoid unnecessary liabilities .

Keep Cleaning Supplies On-Hand

There should be at least one roll of paper towels at each workstation for sip and paint parties. This will encourage everyone to clean up any paint spills that may happen, and you won’t have nearly as much cleanup to do once everyone goes home.

Also make sure that you have a few damp cloths available for cleaning up any larger spills. You may also want to provide everyone with aprons to help keep their clothing clean.

Setting Up the Art Supplies

Make sure that each paint station has all of the necessary supplies. Each station should have a canvas, an easel, at least one water cup for cleaning brushes, paint brushes, craft paint or acrylic paints, and a paint palette. Basically, there will be painting kits for each guest.

Some people choose to share brushes and paints, so they keep everything in the middle of the table where everyone can reach them. But, since the supplies are so inexpensive at dollar stores, you may just want to supply each guest with their own materials to work with at each paint station.

One thing to keep in mind is how much paint each person will be using. Beginners often use far too much, so for this reason, you might want to use one set of paints and simply dole out what each artist will need. Another option is to have everyone bring their own supplies.

Ask Your Guests to Bring Hair Dryers

Chances are you only have one hair dryer. But, you can always ask your guests to bring their own to the paint party.

While it isn’t always necessary because acrylic paints do tend to dry quickly, if there are thicker coats of paint, hairdryers will ensure these areas are dry enough to paint over.

Ready, Set, Paint!

Once everyone has arrived and their creative juices are flowing, it’s time to start painting. If you have brought in an art teacher , they will take care of all of the instruction and more tips, and all you have to do is enjoy painting and sip your wine.

If you are using a video tutorial as a step by step guide, make sure that it is ready to start playing as soon as your guests are ready to begin painting. When using painting tutorials, it is a good idea to have a sample painting done in advance.

Then your guests will have something to go by besides the video painting tutorial, and you can offer up your own tips on recreating the painting.

Take Lots of Pictures

Make sure you and your guests take plenty of pics throughout the sip party. Not only will they have these beautiful memories (especially for those sip and paint for couples events), you can use the photos to show others just how much fun your painting parties are.

When everyone is finished painting, remember to take pics of those finished paintings so others can see what can be accomplished during these paint nights.

You might want to ask the attendees’ permission to use these photos for future marketing purposes.

What To Do After the Party is Over?

The one thing that no one enjoys about paint parties is the cleanup that comes after the painting party. It helps if your guests are cleaning up after themselves as they work, but this won’t always be the case with a sip and paint party, especially if you host sip and paint for kids .

What’s more fun than creating your own painting? Doing it with your friends! (And a little wine never hurts either.) Here’s how to host your own paint party.

I’m convinced this is why the whole social painting scene is taking off. You may have heard of Paint and Sip nights or Coffee and Canvas. It’s also called Social Painting, or Social Creativity, and it’s a great way to get some “girl time” while doing something creative, especially if you think you have no artistic ability and would never attempt to paint a whole painting by yourself.

The only drawback is it can be kind of pricey, and you may not have a studio near you that offers such a thing.

Never fear, I’m here to show you how to host your own paint party, and I’m even going to walk you through the process of creating an aspen tree painting, so you can lead your own group of intrepid artists-in-training.

How to host your own paint party

We recently did this at my church, and it was a blast! It was a great way to spend time together, and the guests all amazed themselves with their paintings. The question I heard the most leading up to the painting party was “Do I need to know how to paint?”

I reassured everyone that even if they’d never held a brush, they’d be able to create their own painting, and I would lead them every step of the way. They all looked simultaneously relieved and skeptical. But it was true! The secret is creating a simple, well-planned project ahead of time. Here’s how we did it.

First, plan your party:

Party (and painting) space.

You’ll need a venue with plenty of table space. Each painter will need about two feet of their own space, so don’t try to cram 6 painters around your kitchen table.

Lighting is also important. If you’re having an evening party, consider whether your space will have adequate lighting for each workspace.

When you’re planning your party decorations, make sure to get enough cheap plastic tablecloths to cover the work tables. They’ll look nice with your party decor, but will really serve the purpose of protecting your tables and helping with cleanup later.

You don’t need much for decor because the paintings will make it pretty for you.

Make great food! Nothing brings people together like party food. Stick to finger foods that can easily be munched on with one hand, while holding a paintbrush in the other.

(Although we had an amazing chocolate cake which didn’t fit the finger food requirement, but it was so worth it anyway!)

Party Drinks

Don’t forget the drinks! Since we had this shindig at the church, we skipped the wine (although I’m pretty sure Jesus would have been OK with it) in favor of coffee.

Party Invites

Invite your friends, and reassure them over and over again that they’ll have fun, even if they can’t paint a lick. I promise they really will.

For this first go-round, I decided to stick with a limited palette and use a simple composition, so we painted aspen trees in the snow. This allowed us to use a couple of tricks that cut down on the need for special painting techniques.

For this painting, each person will need:

  • A 9 X 12 canvas (Get the kind that’s stapled on the back, not the side, so the finished painting doesn’t need to be framed.)
  • 3 paintbrushes – a fine point, a medium, and a larger flat brush
  • A sheet of palette paper , or a foam plate for mixing paint
  • A solo-cup sized plastic cup of water for washing brushes

  • Several strips of masking tape
  • A credit card or library card

Here is the step-by-step process for creating your painting:

Tear the masking tape into several strips long enough to reach from the top to the bottom of your canvas and wrap around the edges.

Tape them vertically onto the canvas in a random pattern. These strips will be the trees. You can cross a few to make a falling or leaning tree, or you can leave them straight up and down.

Advanced tip: tear the masking tape into halves longways, and put the irregular torn part on the outside edges of the trees to simulate the natural uneven lines of the tree trunks.

You can make a few small strips for smaller branches and apply them diagonally or horizontally.

Once you like the composition, be sure to smooth your tape down well, so no paint bleeds underneath.

The sky is made by blending the Cerulean Blue with the White, starting at the top with pure blue, and ending at the bottom with lighter blue. To achieve this effect, you’ll use your large or medium brush to mix the paint a little at a time.

First apply some pure blue along the top of the canvas. Then dab your brush into the white paint and add a little to the blue paint on your palette.

Dab this slightly lighter blue all along the bottom edge of the pure blue on the canvas and use your brush to mix the two together, just a little bit, on the canvas.

Keep repeating this step, adding a little more white each time until you get to the bottom of the canvas.

Tip: You can use any kind of brush strokes. Smush it, swirl it, drag it, or try a combination. This is art, it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Be sure to paint around the edges of the canvas too, so when you see it from the side it doesn’t look messy and unfinished.

Carefully lift up the masking tape. You don’t need to wait till the paint is dry, just be careful not to smudge it while you’re working on the tape.

Now we’re going to add the black stripes to the tree trunks.

Working in small sections, dab a few dots of black along the edge of a tree.

Then place your credit card on the outside edge of the dots and drag it toward the center of the tree trunk.

This helps the bark look more natural by giving it an uneven, mottled look. Be sure to place your dots unevenly (three here, one there, six over here) or your trees will end up looking a little zebra-y.

Great job! You can stop here, or you can use your smallest brush to dab on a few dots of white for falling snow.

There. You just created a painting! Be sure to sign it so it’ll be worth something long after you’re gone.

Paint Party Hosting Tips

Now I’m guessing that since you’re considering leading this party, you probably have some kind of creative or artistic ability. (If not, that’s OK!)

Just keep in mind that folks who consider themselves non-artists will probably be intimidated by the process, and they’ll be looking to you for reassurance. 

Remember to break each step down into the smallest steps you can and describe everything. We started with how to hold the brush, and what the water cup is for. (Then we all labeled our water cups because people kept accidentally trying to drink out of the wrong cups.)

If you remember to encourage your guests liberally, they’ll loosen up and have a much better time!

Party Timing

This painting has three basic parts to it: masking the trees (steps 1-3), painting the sky (steps 4-6), and adding the bark and snow (steps 7-9). It took us about 30 minutes for each part, which meant an hour and a half of painting.

I feel like this was just about right. Any longer, and it would have been tiring. The whole party was about 2 hours long, including time to talk before and after.

Also, it took me and two of my friends about an hour to set up, between general party prep and getting everything laid out at each painter’s spot at the tables.

Enlist Help

We had about 16 painters at this party, and there was just enough of me to go around.

If you want to host a party for more people, it’s probably a good idea to have two artists leading, one to demonstrate the steps, and one to walk around and help answer questions while people are working.

Party Budget

One last thing…cost. Since we kept our supply list short, it only cost about $10 per person to do a painting. (That doesn’t include costs for food and party decor.)

I don’t think you could do it for much less, and I would probably recommend budgeting for about $15-20 per person, just to be on the safe side.

Whew! It sounds like a lot of work, but it really wasn’t bad, and was SO worth it to see all these lovely ladies learning to paint! I love how each painting has a slightly different personality to it, and they all look great.

BATH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at 200 Congress Ave. and concludes at Library Park and will be followed by a wreath-laying service at 11 a.m.

BERWICK 11 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at Berwick Town Hall/Sullivan Square and proceeds to Lord’s Cemetery by way of Wilson and Allen streets. After a ceremony there, the parade will continue down Saw Mill Hill Street with a pause at the Somersworth-Berwick Bridge for a brief memorial service for those lost at sea. The parade ends at Sullivan Square with a memorial service honoring area veterans.

BIDDEFORD-SACO Opening ceremony at 9:55 a.m. Monday at Saco City Hall. Parade starts at 10 a.m. from Saco City Hall and proceeds along Main Street and down York Hill into Biddeford, continues along Main Street, onto Alfred Street and finishes at Veteran’s Memorial Park with a closing ceremony at 10:45 a.m.

BRUNSWICK-TOPSHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Topsham Town Hall, pauses for observances while crossing the Brunswick-Topsham bridge, and concludes at the Brunswick Mall.

CAPE ELIZABETH 9 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at the middle school parking lot, turns right on Scott Dyer Road, right onto Route 77 and ends at the village green adjacent to the town hall. A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the Village Green after the parade.

CUMBERLAND 8 a.m. Monday. Kids run at Greely High School followed by 5K Run and Remember race at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Mabel I. Wilson School and ends at the veterans’ monument in Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland Center, where a ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Advertisement

FALMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from 65 Depot Road (Falmouth American Legion) to Pine Grove Park, where a ceremony will be held.

FREEPORT 9:30 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Holbrook Street, heads north on Main and makes a right onto School Street, then right onto Park Street, ending in Memorial Park. There will be a small ceremony in Memorial Park starting at 10 a.m.
