Yarm Sixth Form Student Is Awarded Second Place in NCH Essay Competition

Yarm Sixth Form Student Is Awarded Second Place in NCH Essay Competition

One of our Lower Sixth Form students, Mia Mack, has been awarded second place in the international essay competition run by New College of the Humanities.

The NCH Essay Competition invites students in their penultimate year of secondary education (Y12 / Lower Sixth equivalent) to answer an essay question from one of ten categories: art history, creative writing, data science, economics, english, history, law, philosophy, politics and international relations, and psychology.

The competition attracts talented and intellectually curious students with passion and academic potential in humanities and social sciences from across the globe. In fact, 2021’s competition saw over 6,000 entries from the UK and EU.

NCH Essay Competition Entry

Mia submitted a 1,500 word art history essay, answering ‘Should the West return cultural artefacts to their former colonial territories?’ Here is an excerpt from her entry:

“Those advocating for the repatriation of cultural artefacts argue that by doing this, the colonial history between nations such as the United Kingdom and their former territories can be acknowledged and accepted as a part of history and can then be ‘moved past’ as it were, to build more diplomatic relationships between nations (US News, 2012). For many, the ‘ownership’ of colonial artefacts by their former powers, classes them as stolen items. From the point of view of the former territories, having their property remain in the ‘mother country’ is only a dark reminder of past imperialistic culture, and continues to allow the colonial power to benefit from their historical wrongs. The vast majority of the artefacts in question were crafted on the back of the slave trade. If the pieces are to remain with the western powers, does this give them a somewhat corrupted legacy? And is it justifiable to say that they should be kept on the grounds of education if these former powers continue to profit from their colonial pasts?   In contrast, there is scope for complications regarding foreign relations if the ownership of the artefacts in question is disputed. A large portion of cultural artefacts have intricate and somewhat multifaceted histories that may be unknown or cryptic. This could cause conflict between nations that want possession of such pieces.”

She said: “I am delighted to have been awarded second place with my essay. I am extremely passionate about art and loved being given the opportunity to share my own ideas and interests with others via an essay. I am really proud of what I achieved and will definitely enter more competitions like this in the future.”

We must also congratulate Shilpi Nanda and Ananya Padamanabhan who were both shortlisted and commended for their essays which they entered into the history and politics and international business categories respectively. Shilpi answered ‘Will the Covid-19 pandemic change human history?’ whilst Ananya answered ‘Is democracy experiencing a setback worldwide?’

Dr Huw Williams, Headmaster, said: “Mia should be very proud to have achieved second place in such a prestigious competition. Her essay is an intelligent and thought provoking exploration of a contentious cultural topic and showcases her real passion for and insight into art history. We encourage all pupils to explore their subjects deeply and not to feel constrained by the formal boundaries of the syllabus. It is clear, from her entry, that Mia has a wide ranging and impressive intellectual engagement with ideas and concepts that will complement and support her A level studies.

Shilpi and Ananya should also be very proud, as being shortlisted and then commended in such a highly regarded competition is a fantastic achievement.”

We will ring up the schools of all shortlisted candidates to ensure they meet our entry requirements. You will be disqualified if we discover you do not meet the entry requirements.

Everyone who registers for the essay competition will receive a confirmation email with a link to submit your essay. Please check your junk email as a large number of students have found their email there. If you still have not received it, it may have been blocked by your domain, especially if you are using a school email address. We suggest registering again with a new email address.

If the problem still persists please contact us . It can take up to 5 days for us to respond to your query, so please ensure you email us in good time. We will be unable to respond to every request that comes in as the deadline grows closer.

No, we only have capacity to accept one entry per person. Each entrant may only submit one essay for one subject.

No, this would be unfair to everyone who meets our age requirements. We run this competition every year. Please do apply when you are of the correct age.

Yes, we will check if you are the correct age/in the right year if you are shortlisted, by contacting your school directly, so it will be helpful to let them know that we will be in touch after the competition deadline.

Yes. To ensure our competition is fair for all our students, we run all submissions through our internal system to check for plagiarism. Your submission should be your own original work. Any plagiarised submissions will be disqualified.

You will receive a confirmation email once you submit your essay. We also send out postcards via post to all entrants after the deadline letting you know we are in the process of marking it.

9. I have submitted my essay but noticed a mistake - what can I do?

All submissions are final. O nce entries are in our system we cannot overwrite them.

We received a large number of emails last year with students wishing to upload new versions of previously submitted entries, however this is not possible.

No matter the circumstance, your essay will not be accepted beyond the submission deadline. Please submit your essay in good time to ensure it is accepted. Please do not ask a parent or teacher to email us on your behalf.

Our deadline is strict and we do not offer any extensions, no matter the circumstance. There is a 3 month submission window for our competition, allowing students more than enough time to submit their entries.

You will be disqualified if you contact other Northeastern University London faculty and staff to accept your essay after the submission deadline. Please do not ask a parent or teacher to email us on your behalf.

12. When will I hear back about my entry?

We receive thousands of entries every year and we like to take time to read every single one which is why it can take us a few months to mark them. Please do not email asking when you will hear back, as the more time we spend responding to emails, the less time we have to mark your entries. Everyone who submits an essay/report will be informed of its outcome. Those entries that are shortlisted will be invited to a celebration event which will be held at the university. This is a special event where the prize winners will be announced. We aim to announce all prize winners by April 2025.

Please ensure you remain subscribed to our emails after submitting your essay so we are able to inform you if you have been shortlisted. Our emails will not be delivered if you unsubscribe from our mailing list.

See our competition rules here

No, titles are not included in the 1,500 word count.

No. Please use the registration link provided to submit your essay.

18. Can I read previous submissions?

Yes. You can read previous submissions here

No. As we receive thousands of entries each year, we do not have the capacity to provide feedback for each submission.

We do not ‘rank’ every entry we receive and we are unable to provide individual feedback.

If you are a finalist or shortlisted you will receive a certificate via email. If you are a finalist and come to the Essay Competition Event you will be able to collect a printed version of your certificate, along with your medal. We cannot post the certificate or medal to you, if you do not attend the event.

22. What is the difference between 'finalist' and 'shortlisted'?

Our shortlisted candidates are split into two groups, those who are ‘Finalists’ and those whose are ‘Shortlisted.’ All the entries we received this year were outstanding, but since everyone could not be winners, the students that just missed out are categorised as ‘Finalists’. Those who were awarded ‘Shortlisted’ wrote excellent pieces of work but unfortunately they did not make it to the final round.

Due to the sheer volume of requests we receive it is not possible for us to provide copies of the essay or report you submitted. We ask you to store this on your own personal device should you wish to reflect on it at a later date.

You will win a cash prize if you receive first or second place in your subject. There will also be an overall winner across all essay subjects who will receive a prize.

The following prizes will be awarded:

Overall winner across all essay subjects – £1000

Winner in a subject category – £500

Runner up in a subject category – £250

25. I am a teacher interested in promoting the essay competition to my students. How can I get in touch?

If you would like to join our teachers’ mailing list to receive a poster and promotional material, please  sign up here.

Please do not contact us about any student who has missed a deadline. Every year we receive many emails from teachers trying to get extensions for their students. All deadlines are communicated well in advance and students have a 3 month window in which to submit their entry. We have also increased the number of reminders to students. We pride ourselves in keeping our competition as fair as possible for all students so we adhere to a strict deadline.
