This guide will explain what experiences are open to you as a high school student, what those experiences involve, and how you will benefit from them.

What Medical Experiences Are Available to High School Students?

There are lots of ways to get a taste of what it's like to work in medicine. In my opinion, the best time to do this is over the summer. You have the most free time during the summer, and there are more experiences available.

There are many summer medical programs and summer medical internships for high school students across the country. These opportunities range from research experiences to in-hospital experiences. Some of these programs and internships charge you a fee to attend, some are paid for, and some even pay you to attend.

I've compiled a list of over 60 summer medical programs for high school students. Several of these programs and internships are limited to students from a specific state or area, so be sure to check specific programs for application requirements and fees. I've provided links to each program below.

Medical Programs

In the medical programs category, I list programs that offer high school students the chance to get hands-on experience in medicine (non-research related) such as learning simple medical procedures, watching surgeries, shadowing doctors, working in hospitals, interacting with patients, and more . There are very few programs that offer this type of experience to high school students, and I highly recommend them since they'll give you the most realistic look at what life's like as a pre-med student, medical student, and medical professional.

Medical Research Programs

If you're unable to do one of the above medical programs, the next best thing is a medical research program. In these programs, you'll be working in a lab and helping with medical research that's in progress (i.e. looking at slides under a microscope, recording changes) or assisting with on-going clinical research (i.e. interviewing participants in an on-going trial of new medication, logging participant information in the computer). Many of these programs pair you with a mentor who works at your location. Also, several of these programs require you to give a presentation at the end of the program.

These medical research programs are extremely valuable because, as a pre-med student, you'll likely end up doing lab work either for class or as an extracurricular for your medical school application. If you do one of these programs in high school, you'll be a step ahead of your pre-med classmates.

(One quick note: many of these programs are free or pay stipends, but not every program provides free housing . Make sure you check each program's housing accommodations before you apply!)

Science Research Programs

If you can't do one of the medical research or medical programs, you should consider trying to do a science summer program/internship . These programs are not medicine-specific and cover a wide range of science topics (from plant life to space). However, these programs are still very valuable because as a pre-med student, you'll be learning a ton of science. As a part of your pre-med track, you'll be required to take Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and more. Doing one of these science programs will give you a preview of the coursework ahead of you.

Also, many of these programs are lab work, and, although they're not focused on medical research, they will still give you good general insights into how to do lab work . As I said before, as a pre-med student, you'll likely end up doing lab work either for class or as an extracurricular for your medical school application. If you do one of these programs, you'll be well-prepared to do that research.

What Are the Pros and Cons of These Programs?

These medical programs can be a great experience for many high school students, but they can have some drawbacks. In this section we'll look at the pros and cons of medical programs for high school students.

  • These programs and internships provide a real look at what life's like as a researcher, scientist, or medical student. You'll have a great sense of whether or not you'd like to pursue a career in the medical field after you finish your program.
  • If you do a college campus program, you'll get a preview of college life . You can experience living away from home, and you can decide if you like the college. I did a summer program at UCLA during high school, and it made me realize that UCLA was not the school for me.
  • As I said before, these opportunities give you the chance to evaluate if pre-med is the track you want to go down before you waste time and money in college. If you love your program, you'll be even more motivated to work hard to become a medical professional .
  • You'll meet like-minded students who're interested in medicine/science.
  • You'll have a great program or internship on your college application . By actually participating in a medical/science program, you'll show colleges that you're committed to pursuing a career in the medical field.
  • If you attend a college campus program, and you're interested in going to college at the school that hosted the program, you'll have shown real interest in that college (which admissions officers always like to see).
  • These programs can be expensive . However, some programs pay you to attend! Make sure you check out the individual program websites to find out the cost. And like we mentioned before, pay careful attention to housing! Some programs might offer stipends, but they may not cover housing or transportation costs.
  • Also, these summer medical programs for high school students can be highly competitive (some admit very few students or have special qualifications such as having a 3.5 GPA or higher).
  • Some programs may not provide you with the best insight into medicine , especially those that are less hands-on or only offer research exposure (which is not what you'll necessarily be interested in).

Other Options: Hospital Volunteer or Shadowing a Doctor

Volunteering and job shadowing are both great ways to participate in medical experiences at your local hospital. You can do them during the school year or the summer. Also, both opportunities are free!

What's the difference between volunteering & job shadowing a doctor? As a hospital volunteer, you'll have to apply (and likely interview) to be a volunteer (along with getting a TB test and filling out paperwork). You'll attend a hospital volunteer orientation and be assigned a specific "job" at the hospital, such as assisting the nurses or assisting hospital visitors in navigating the hospital. As a volunteer, you'll be required to commit to volunteering for a certain number of shifts per week. You also may have to commit to volunteering for six months or more.

Job shadowing is a shorter experience and much less formal. You can shadow a doctor for as little time as a few hours or a day or two. While shadowing, you follow a doctor around while they go about their normal activities. They may ask you to help them with basic tasks (grabbing a chart or taking notes), but probably not. You'll be there to see what a doctor does in their daily routine to determine if it interests you.

To sign up to be a hospital volunteer, apply through the hospital's website. If you're having trouble locating the hospital's website or contact information, check with your school academic advisor. They may have a connection to the local hospital or might know another student who has volunteered or job shadowed there and who could help you get involved.

To find a job shadowing opportunity, reach out to any friends or family who work in the medical field. See if they know any doctors whom you could shadow. Also, ask your school's academic advisor if they know other students who shadowed a doctor and could give you more information. If your school can't help you, get in touch with the hospital directly to see if they can help you set up a job shadowing opportunity. If you need more advice on job shadowing, read our other guide.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Shadowing a Doctor or Being a Hospital Volunteer?

Shadowing a doctor or being a hospital volunteer is a significantly different experience than participating in a summer medical program, and they have their own set of pros and cons.

  • As opposed to summer programs, these experiences are always free. As I said above, some medical programs and internships can cost a lot of money. Job shadowing and being a hospital volunteer are free experiences that will only cost you your time. These are great options if you can't afford the cost of a summer program.
  • Job shadowing and being a hospital volunteer can provide a real look into life as a doctor or nurse. By following them around or working in a hospital, you'll get a sense of the work environment and what life is like on a day-to-day basis for a medical professional.
  • As I said before, these opportunities give you the chance to evaluate if pre-med is the track you want to go down before you spend time and money in college. If you don't like your experience job shadowing or as a volunteer, you might realize pre-med isn't the right path for you. However, if you love your experience, you'll feel more motivated to work towards your goal of becoming a medical professional.
  • Job shadowing is a great experience if you don't have a lot of time to commit. You can choose to job shadow for a few hours, a full day, or for several days. It's very flexible.
  • If you want to be pre-med, volunteering at a hospital is a great extracurricular activity for your college application. While volunteering elsewhere (at a homeless shelter, animal shelter, etc.) can be great for a college application, it's good to keep your extracurriculars focused on your future goals. Volunteering at a hospital will show colleges that you're serious about a career in medicine.
  • Volunteer experience may not provide you with quite the medical experience you're looking for. Volunteering may not be very hands-on, and your duties may be repetitive and not directly related to medicine, such as answering phones, filing papers, and helping visitors find where they're going.
  • If you only job shadow for a day, it's not a great experience for your college application. It's not an extracurricular activity if you only do it once because that doesn't show enough commitment. However, I recommend doing job shadowing just to get insight into the medical field.

How to Choose the Right Medical Experience for You

Each of the medical experiences listed in this article has value, but to decide which is right for you, you should ask yourself three questions:

#1: What Is Your Main Medical Interest?

Are you more interested in research or patient care? If research, look into one of the summer research programs. If patient care, look into one of the hospital-based programs, job shadowing or being a hospital volunteer.

#2: How Much Money Are You Willing to Spend?

Do you have money to spend, do you have no money to spend, or do you need to have a job that pays? If you have money to spend, you can consider all of the options. If you have no money to spend, look into an all-expenses paid program (or one with financial aid). Also, consider volunteering or job shadowing since both are free experiences. If you need a job that pays, look into the programs with stipends for participants.

#3: How Much Time Do You Want to Invest in Your Experience?

Do you want to spend a day, a few hours per week, or a few weeks full-time on this experience? If you want a quick experience, consider job shadowing a doctor for a day or two. If you'd like an on-going experience to use as an extracurricular, consider volunteering since you could do that a few hours per week throughout the school year. If you'd like an intensive experience, consider doing one of the summer programs or internships.

Also, always make sure to research a program or experience before you commit to it. Doing so will help avoid a bad experience (such as a program that's not very hands-on or volunteer work that's mostly grunt work). Whatever you're interested in doing, try to find another student who did it previously and ask them about their experience. For the programs, get in touch with the program coordinator to see if they can put you in contact with a program alum you can speak with.

How Will Colleges View These Experiences?

Colleges mainly look for extracurriculars that show your commitment, passion, and ability to handle responsibility and leadership. Job shadowing isn't a great experience for your college application because it's not enough of a commitment if you only do it for a few days. On the other hand, volunteering at a hospital is a great extracurricular activity for your college application because it shows a commitment to medicine.

The summer programs and internships are also great experiences for your college application because they show that same interest in and commitment to medicine. Also, many of these programs and internships are competitive, and colleges know that. If you're accepted into one of those programs or internships, colleges will view it like you won a prestigious award.

1) High School Senior Summer Internship Program

While topics vary year to year (i.e.: public health interventions, global health, infectious disease, chronic disease, injury prevention, data analysis, etc.) these one-week sessions are both fast paced and academically demanding. Participants are expected to fully immerse themselves, work together, and become a diverse team of disease detectives!

7) Georgetown Summer High School Science and Medical Program 

Hosting Institution : Georgetown University

Cost : $2,500-3,225

Format : In person (Washington, DC)

Application deadline :  May 15, 2024

The 1-Week Medical Academy in June or July introduces students to the field of medicine. Participants explore topics ranging from human anatomy and physiology, to cancer and biomedical ethics. Learning occurs via hands-on labs, using a patient simulator, and focuses on current medical concerns like COVID-19, preventative medicine, heart disease, and HIV.

8) Medical Immersion Summer Academy (MISA)

Considering a career in medicine? Internships and pre-college medical programs in healthcare can give you a head start on your career and help you get into college. These opportunities can provide you with experiences such as working in a lab and conducting trials, all while providing first-hand experience working in settings like universities, hospitals, clinics, and research facilities.

13 Medical Programs for High School Students

1. stanford medical youth science program (smysp).

Application Deadline: March 15

Duration: Five weeks (June 24-July 26)  

In this five-week, tuition-free online program, low-income, first-generation high school juniors who live in Northern California complete intensive coursework in medicine and health science, take part in professional development workshops, network with health professionals, and receive college admissions guidance and mentoring. Students will also complete a college-level research project on public health disparities and gain insight into navigating a career in medicine.

The 24 participants in this program will each receive a $1,250 clinical research stipend.

2. Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego: Summer Medical Academy

Application Deadline : February 23

Duration: Two weeks (June 17-28 or July 8-19)

Offered through Rady’s Children Hospital San Diego, the Summer Medical Academy gives high school students interested in pursuing healthcare careers the opportunity to explore medical training and practice. High school students who have both completed 9th grade and are between 15-19 years old can gain hands-on experience, learn about key topics in medicine from experts, and network with future potential colleagues.  

Prospective participants are admitted based on their interest in a health career, participation in extracurricular activities, and scholastic achievement. Special consideration will be given to students who reside near San Diego, seniors in high school or recent graduates, and those who have an affiliation with Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. The cost of this program is $3,000. Scholarships are available, but on a limited basis.

3. Lumiere Research Scholar Program

Application Deadline : Varies by cohort. Main summer deadlines are March 15, April 15, and May 15

Duration: Options range from 12 weeks to 1 year

Founded by Harvard & Oxford researchers, the Lumiere Research Scholar Program is a rigorous research program tailored for high school students. The program pairs high-school students with PhD mentors to work 1-on-1 on an independent research project . At the end of the 12-week program, you’ll have written an independent research paper! You can choose research topics from subjects such as medicine, computer science, psychology, physics, economics, data science, business, engineering, biology, and international relations.

This program is designed to accommodate your schedule—you can participate in the summer, fall, winter, or spring, and the program is also conducted fully remotely. While you must be currently enrolled in high school and demonstrate high academic achievement (most students have an unweighted GPA of 3.3), no previous knowledge of your field of interest is required. The cost of the program ranges from $2,800 to $8,900, but financial aid is available.

4. UCSF Summer Student Research Program

Duration: Nine weeks (June 3rd until early August)

Students in this program are placed in local clinics and science labs to participate in biomedical research projects. Through the program, participants receive one-on-one mentorship from healthcare providers and researchers. Participants also gain access to unique workshops, seminars, trainings, simulations, and networking events. The program is open to high school juniors and seniors, as well as current college undergraduates, from backgrounds underrepresented in the sciences, such as minority racial/ethnic groups, those with disabilities, and first-generation college students. 

Program participants are eligible for a stipend ranging from $3,000 to $4,300. 

5. Center for Disease Control (CDC) Museum Disease Detective Camp

Application Deadline: March 22

Duration: Five days (June 24-28 or July 22-26)

At CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, rising high school juniors and seniors (who must also be 16 years old) have the opportunity to spend five days learning about public health. The fields covered vary and may include research, data collection, data analysis, and health education. Although the camp doesn’t focus on medical treatment, it’s a good opportunity for students interested in medicine to get a more comprehensive understanding of career paths in the field. 

Activities are also diverse and include recreated outbreaks, mock press conferences, environmental and global health activities, a laboratory session, an introduction to chronic disease surveillance, and short lectures from world-renowned CDC scientists. 

The program is free to attend. However, participants must provide their own housing and transportation to and from the CDC’s campus in Atlanta, Georgia. 

6. Indiana University Simon Cancer Center Summer Research Program  

Application Deadline: N/A

Duration: Eight weeks (typically from early June to late July)   

Participants in this eight-week program are paired with research mentors and work 40 hours per week on projects that may involve work in labs, computer databases, or clinics. They also participate in weekly workshops on topics concerning gaining admission to graduate and professional programs of study, along with professional development sessions.  

This program caters to students whose identities are traditionally underrepresented in research fields. All participants must have completed their senior year of high school or be current undergraduate students with a 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher. Participants receive a stipend, although housing and transportation must be taken care of by the student.

7. Penn Summer Academies

Duration: Three weeks (July 6-27) 

The University of Pennsylvania’s Summer Academies offer high school students the opportunity to engage in three-week subject-intensive programs that combine advanced scientific or social theory with relevant applications. Each of Penn Summer Academies is focused on a particular subject: you’ll choose between biomedical research, chemistry research, experimental physics, and neuroscience. There are also programs in coding and math that are more tangentially related to medicine, but could still be beneficial depending on your personal goals.

The program is open to high school students currently in 9th through 11th grade and residential and online opportunities are available. The program costs $9,700, although financial assistance is available for select Philadelphia students.

8. Health Care Career Exploration Camp

Duration: Usually t wo days in early to mid June

This free program for Nebraska students in grades 10 through 12 allows participants to learn about a variety of healthcare careers, not just clinical positions. The program is offered at two CHI Health locations in Nebraska. Note that space is limited by location, and past participants are waitlisted to allow new students to attend.

9. Medical Immersion Summer Academy (MISA)

Application Deadline: March 8

Duration: Five days in July or August

During MISA, you’ll learn about healthcare through hands-on clinical training in crucial skills (like suturing, providing CPR, splinting, and taking vitals) and mentorship opportunities. The purpose of the program, which was started in 2012 and takes place in Oakland, CA, is to give students interested in healthcare careers a strong knowledge foundation early on.

The program is open to all high school students in grades 9 through 12, so long as you are 15 by the start of the program, and costs $1,400, plus a $50 non-refundable application fee.

10. Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine: Achieve in Medicine (AIM–High)

Application Deadline: May 1

Duration: Five days (June 24-28, July 8-12, or July 15-19)

This program offers high school students the unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the field of medicine. Through AIM-High, students will gain hands-on medical experiences, such as using technology in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions, alongside NSU medical students and staff. Activities include both educational interactive sessions and social events.

The program offers three sessions—two sessions at NSU’s main campus in Fort Lauderdale and one session at its Clearwater campus—and is available to high school students of all ages, so long as they have a GPA of at least 3.2. Tuition for AIM-High is $1,600, plus a $40 non-refundable application fee, and students will leave the program certified in first aid and CPR.

11. National Student Leadership Conference on Medicine & Healthcare

Duration: Nine days 

This summer program gives high schoolers a chance to learn about controversial medical issues, today’s healthcare challenges, and advanced scientific research in areas such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. The program is offered at:  

  • American University
  • Duke University 
  • Northwestern University
  • UC Berkeley
  • University of Miami
  • Yale University 

Students will perform clinical rounds, learn medical examination and surgical techniques, and contribute to a public health project focused on developing a media campaign to spread information on illness and disease prevention. Participants will also be able to take an online college credit course taught by American University faculty after completing the program.  

Each campus offers between two and four nine-day summer sessions with costs ranging from $3,895 to $4,095 depending on location. Scholarships are available, however. While admission is rolling, note that slots fill up quickly.

12. Eve and Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program

Duration: Varies by facility

For more than 50 years, this free medical mentorship program has encouraged students to follow career paths all across medicine. Participants attend daily interactive sessions presented by a range of medical professionals, including surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, ophthalmologists, radiologists, and therapists. There are also two online sessions offered in July.

The program is open to high school juniors and seniors (at the time of application) living in Los Angeles and its adjacent counties. Some facilities may have additional age requirements. Note that if you have participated before, you cannot reapply.

13. Georgetown Medical Academy

Application Deadline: May 15 (note there is an application fee if you apply after January 31)

Duration: One week (June 9-15, June 23-29, or July 7-13)

Students in this residential program will learn about medicine and get an up-close-and-personal look at the Georgetown University Medical Center, including its world-renowned Lombardi Cancer Center. Participants explore a variety of topics, including human anatomy, physiology, radiology, surgery, cancer, and biomedical ethics. They’ll also gain hands-on experience in suturing, casting, and dissection. The program costs $3,549, or $2,750 if you are commuting, and provides a good glimpse into the path to becoming a physician.

14. Health Care Careers Exploration Program

Application Deadline: April 30

Duration: One week (July 20-25)

This week-long summer program at Rochester Institute of Technology provides deaf and hard-of-hearing students in grades 10 through 12 the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of important issues in healthcare and prepare for a potential career in the field. Students will attend medical demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations, and become CPR and first aid certified. Students will also engage in a variety of social activities, such as swimming, bowling, going to the movies, and visiting local places of interest. The cost of the program is $700.

15. High School Senior Summer Internship Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

Application Deadline: February 1

Duration: Eight weeks  

Work with a mentor in one of the various pediatric clinical specialties in this eight-week program for Cincinnati-area graduating seniors. Participants also engage in group activities, including an afternoon hands-on training session with computerized simulated pediatric patients in the SIM Center, lunch seminars, networking sessions, and community service opportunities. Your internship will culminate in a graduation party featuring student presentations on their experiences. 

Interns work 20 hours a week and are paid $13 an hour. 

16. NIH High School Summer Internship Program 

Application Deadline: February 16 (February 23 for reference letters)

Duration: Generally eight weeks 

This internship offers students the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading scientists in the field of biomedical research, at one of the most renowned research institutions in the world. Students participate in a range of activities including lectures from NIH investigators, career and professional development workshops, and activities focused on college readiness.  

The internship is open to students who are juniors or seniors when they apply and who are age 17 or older. All participants are given a stipend, although the amount varies from year to year and depends on the level of education you have completed before beginning your internship.   

17. Magee-Womens Research Institute High School Summer Internship Program

Application Deadline: January 31 

Duration: Six weeks (beginning June 17)

This is a six-week, 240-hour internship for rising high school juniors and seniors (who will be over 16 when the internship starts) where participants conduct scientific research under the supervision of an investigator and their staff at MWRI and Magee-Womens Hospital. Interns also participate in sessions where investigators discuss careers in biomedical science and their journeys and perspectives. At the program’s conclusion, interns will present their findings to other participants as well as to the MWRI faculty and staff.  

This is a free and extremely competitive program, which has been around since 1995—less than 8% of the students who apply are chosen. Note that to apply, you must permanently reside in southwest Pennsylvania. Students from families that qualify for the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program for Pennsylvania are eligible to receive a $1,800 stipend for their participation in the program.

18. Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience High School Internship

Application Deadline: March 4

Duration: Six weeks (June 17 to July 26)

This six-week internship is for rising juniors and seniors (who will be at least 16 when the internship starts) in a Palm Beach or Martin County high school who are interested in brain structure, function, and development, and the advanced imaging techniques and technologies used in neuroscience. Neuroscience interns participate in one of three tracks: neuroscience, scientific programming, or mechanical engineering. At the end of the internship, students will write a scientific abstract and deliver a short presentation.  

Interns are compensated at a rate of $12.50 per hour for their work, and can expect to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship.

19. KP Launch  

Application Deadline: January 2 

Duration: Seven weeks (June 17 to August 2)

The KP Launch program is offered by Kaiser Permanente, and provides students who are between ages 16-19 by June 1 with a variety of internships at its Oakland headquarters and medical offices across Northern California. The program is aimed at students who are low-income or from backgrounds underrepresented in healthcare, and serves to introduce them to careers in the field by building practical job skills and gaining real-world work experience.  

Priority is given to high school seniors and juniors, and participants earn the hourly minimum wage for the area, which varies between $15.50 and $18 per hour.

20. Summer Child Health Research Internship

Application Deadline: February 1 

Duration: Nine weeks (June 3 to August 2)

This medical internship is open to rising high school seniors, as long as they will be over 18 when the internship starts, who will complete their work alongside undergraduates and first-year medical students. Through the internship, students will explore research opportunities related to child healthcare, while working in a lab with faculty members of the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus. At the conclusion of the program, students are required to submit a written summary of their research and deliver a presentation of it.

High school participants must be Colorado residents and are provided with a $3,500 stipend.

21. Fred Hutch Summer High School Internship Program

Application Deadline: March 31 

Duration: Eight weeks (June 24 to August 16)

This eight-week, full-time, paid internship is for rising seniors, specifically those from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical science. The first two weeks of the program are focused on training participants in laboratory safety skills and techniques, then for the following six weeks participants are immersed in mentoring activities. Interns will also take part in research seminars, professional development workshops, and social activities, and give a presentation to the Fred Hutch community at the end of their internship.

Interns are provided a stipend, and those commuting from the greater Seattle area are also given a free ORCA card for the local buses.

22. Harvard Medical School Project Success for High School Students

Application Deadline: February 2 

Duration: Six weeks (July 8 to August 16)

Project Success is aimed at students from disadvantaged backgrounds and groups underrepresented in medicine. The program provides paid summer research positions at Harvard Medical School and its affiliated institutions to rising juniors and seniors from Boston and Cambridge (do note there are GPA and coursework prerequisites, and you must be 16 by the start of the program). In addition to performing mentored research, students will also participate in seminars, workshops, site visits, and career counseling.

23. Medical College of Wisconsin Apprenticeship in Medicine (AIM)

Application Deadline: March 1 

Duration: Six weeks (June 24 to August 2)

AIM is a highly competitive program that provides internship opportunities to Milwaukee-area students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in medicine and health careers, in order to stimulate their interest in careers in the field. Interns will receive mentoring from current medical students and participate in clinical shadowing and simulations. They will also explore career paths and take part in social activities. 

Participants can anticipate working 40 hours per week during the program, which is free and awards a stipend to all students at the program’s conclusion.

24. Pediatrics Internship Program at Stanford (PIPS)

Application Deadline: February 26

Rising high school juniors and seniors living in Northern California can learn about science, medicine, and research during this six-week internship. Participants will learn how research is performed and conduct their own research projects while working with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and students. Anticipate working 30 hours per week during this program. 

This is a free program, and students with financial need can receive a $3,000 stipend for participating. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee, but applicants with total family income under $90,000 can apply for a fee waiver.

This intensive program provides exposure to technical skills related to cardiothoracic surgery, including knot-tying, dissection, suturing, coronary artery bypass graft, and cardiac valve replacement. Lectures and labs are led by Stanford faculty, surgical residents, and staff. One disadvantage is the tuition, which does not cover housing.

Attending a pre-med summer program in high school is a solid idea for any aspiring pre-med students!

These programs offer a multitude of benefits that can significantly enhance your path towards a successful medical career as you can explore the world of medicine before committing to years of rigorous education and training.

By attending any of these programs below, you will gain hands-on experience through workshops, labs, and clinical simulations, giving you a taste of what a potential career in healthcare and research in medicine may entail .

1. Stanford Medical Youth Science Program

The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) is a free, five-week long, full-time summer program for current juniors from low-income and/or underrepresented backgrounds currently living in Northern California . While the location requirement does limit participation opportunities, this is a solid option for those living in California who are interested in pursuing medicine later in life. As a participant, you will be mentored by medical professionals, faculty, and current pre-med or STEM Stanford University students. This program would also be a great option for those who will be first-generation students, as SMYSP’s admission team focuses on increasing opportunity and access for aspiring first-generation college students from underrepresented backgrounds. This year, the SMYSP will also be hosted on Stanford’s campus in Palo Alto, California. During the duration of the program, you will intern at the Stanford Hospital every week, attend academic seminars and lectures, and create and present your own public health research project.

Eligibility: Current high school juniors

Location: Stanford University’s campus in Palo Alto, California

Dates: June 24 to July 26, 2024

2. Horizon Academic Research Program (HARP)

Horizon offers trimester-long research programs for high school students across subject areas such as data science, machine learning, political theory, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, and more! It is one of the very few research programs for high school students that offers a choice between quantitative and qualitative research!  

Once you select a particular subject track and type of research you’ll be paired with a professor or Ph.D. scholar (from a top university) who will mentor you throughout your research journey.  You’ll work to create a 20-page, university-level research paper that you can send to prestigious journals for publication as a high school student. 

This program is a solid opportunity for you to pursue a research program in highly specialized fields, under the guidance of a top scholar.  The program also provides a letter of recommendation for each student, as well as detailed project feedback that you can use to work on future projects and on college applications. Eligibility: High school students with good academic standing (>3.67/4.0 GPA) can apply. Most accepted students are 10th/11th graders! Only a couple of tracks require formal prerequisites, more details of which can be found here .

3. CDC Museum Disease Detective Camp

The CDC Museum Disease Detective Camp, an interdisciplinary educational program organized by the CDC Museum, focuses on educating students about the CDC’s work. This academic day camp is held at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia and admission is open to high-school juniors and seniors. During camp, students are immersed in the diverse field of public health, with varying topics including: public health interventions, global health, infectious disease, chronic disease, injury prevention, data analysis, surveys, school wellness programs, violence prevention, environmental health, emergency preparedness, outbreaks, scientific communication, laboratory technology, disease surveillance, epidemiology, and public health law. With its main focus being the field of public health and the science of epidemiology, this program would be great for any students hoping to study biology or the biological sciences. This program has thirty slots available for each week-long camp and the application is competitive, with several hundred students applying to camp each year , so be sure to register early on to earn your spot. This program is not limited to U.S. citizens and would be a great option for any international high school students.

Fees: There is no cost. But campers must provide their own housing as well as transportation to and from CDC’s campus in Atlanta, GA.

Registration: Applications and application information will be shared in December of 2023.

Eligibility: High school juniors and seniors

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Dates: June 26-30 and July 24-28

4. Georgetown University Summer Medical Academy

This premed summer program is a great option for those looking for medical internships in high school. This one-week Medical Academy will introduce you to the field of medicine and give you a glimpse into the Georgetown University Medical Center, which includes the nationally ranked School of Medicine and School of Nursing & Health Studies, as well as the world-renowned Lombardi Cancer Center. Hosted on Georgetown’s campus in both June and July, you will have the opportunity to interact directly with current medical students, Georgetown University School of Medicine faculty, and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital physicians to learn about the path to becoming a physician, discover ways to succeed in medical school, and explore a variety of medical specialties. As a student, you'll spend your day immersed in a blend of lectures, interactive experiences, and group discussions, all led by prestigious Georgetown faculty.

Fees: $3,549 (this includes tuition, housing, and meals)

Registration: Early bird deadline dates: January 31 (Application fee waived for all applications submitted by this date). Final deadline: May 15

Eligibility: Current or rising high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors during the academic year prior to your summer program.

Location: Georgetown University’s campus in Washington, D.C.

Dates: June 9th-15th, June 23rd-29th, and July 7th-13th, 2024.

5. Rady Children’s Hospital Summer Medical Academy

The Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego hosts a summer Medical Academy that provides high-school age students with unique and exciting opportunities to explore the world of health care through lectures, skills clinics, hands-on activities, group projects, career panels and interactive discussions. Designed for students who are interested in healthcare as a career, this program will cover everything from medicine and nursing to pharmacy and social work.

This hospital also offers a larger program than others on this list, and includes weekend-academy options if you are unable to commit to the entire academy. Each of these programs have different topics and appeal to different medical careers. Some of these weekend programs include: Working as a Physician’s Assistant, Becoming a Professional Nurse, and Mental Health Matters in Medicine .

Fees: $3,000, which covers all course, lab, and program materials; t-shirts and scrub pants; and daily lunch

Registration: Application due date will be published in Fall 2023 .

Eligibility: Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school

Location: Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California

Dates: June 17-28 and July 8-19, 2024

6. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital High School Senior Summer Internship Program

The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital hosts an eight-week internship for incoming college first-years every summer. What sets this program apart from others on this list is that it is a paid internship, rather than a pre-college summer program. As a participant, you will dedicate about 20 hours a week to this program under a hospital mentor. You must also live in the Cincinnati area, and be a graduating high school senior to apply.

The program itself is a very competitive, exciting opportunity for highly motivated students interested in pursuing higher education (MD, PhD, or MD / PhD) to learn more about careers in Biomedical Sciences. And while this is a paid internship, this program is still structured the same as the other pre-med programs on this list as it combines learning with experience! As an intern, you will be paid $13 an hour and will spend your time shadowing your primary mentor in the clinic while participating in clinical and research projects.

Fees: No cost

Registration: Applications open November 2023 and close February 1st, 2024.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a resident in the Cincinnati metropolitan area and graduating from high school in spring 2024.

Location: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dates: Times vary by intern, but the start date is June 4th, 2024 and the program runs for the eight following weeks.

7. The Rochester Institute of Technology’s Health Care Careers Exploration Program

The Rochester Institute of Technology’s pre-med summer program was created with the goal of exposing participants to a potential future in the medical field, while also showing you what college life is like. As a participant you will attend medical demonstrations, participate in group activities and discussions, be part of hands-on demonstrations in biology, exercise science, medical laboratory science, microbiology, nursing, nutrition and earn a a CPR/First Aid certification. All students participating in the program stay at Rochester Institute of Technology in the Mark Ellingson Residence Hall, and will be served all meals in the Grace Watson Dining Hall, which means you will get to experience campus life while narrowing down your future career. This program is also unique in that it is geared towards deaf, or hard of hearing, students. It provides a special learning environment for those wanting to pursue a career in the medical realm who may not have had a chance to do a summer program otherwise.

Registration: April 30, 2024

Eligibility: Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade in fall of 2024

Location: Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY

Dates: July 20 – 25, 2024

Nova Southeastern University’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine offers this unique five-day medical immersion day camp for high school students. Achieve in Medicine (AIM) High was created with the goal of supporting and educating high-achieving high school students in what pursuing a career in the health professions may look like. The AIM-High pre-med day camp will provide you with a wide range of hands-on medical experiences in various disciplines, while exploring the role of technology in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

As a participant, you will have the opportunity to explore different areas of medical practice in numerous specialties, including: preventative medicine, pediatrics, neuroscience, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and public health. T hrough 7+ hours of daily informational meetings and classes, you will learn and apply innovative and emerging technologies that impact medical education and practice, such as 3-D modeling, processing language and augmented reality. This program also applies learning experiences through medical procedure practice, like suturing and dissections. This program is not limited to Florida or U.S. residents.

9. Wake Forest University’s Summer Medical Immersion Program

At the Wake Forest University Summer Medical Immersion Program, you will engage with on-site visits to healthcare facilities and hands-on experiences in the medical field while gaining insight into the many career opportunities available within the various disciplines of medicine. You’ll visit healthcare facilities in surrounding areas, participate in simulations and labs all while learning basic skills like taking blood pressure and suturing. During these exercises and experiences, you will experience what it would be like to pursue a career in the medical field by learning all about Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Ultrasound, Cancer Care, and Surgery.

Fees: $3,000

Registration: The application opens on November 1st and students are accepted on a rolling basis until all programs are filled. There is no hard deadline to apply, though students are encouraged to apply early as popular institutes begin to implement waitlists in January.

10. Harvard University’s Summer Pre-Med Academies

Split into two sections: Biology & Chemistry and Human Anatomy & Physiology, Harvard University’s Pre-Med Academies offer you the opportunity to learn key clinical skills from speakers and Harvard Medical School students, develop a deep understanding of what it is like to study Medicine, and explore medical specialties from cardiology to immunotherapy. If you apply to the Biology & Chemistry course, you will study Genetics, Immunology, & Organic Chemistry while gaining an important medical background and taking a deep dive into various diseases. If you apply to the Human Anatomy & Physiology course, you will study the various systems of the body, learn about blood work, how to read medical images (including X-rays and MRIs) and prepare for a case study analysis. Both courses are taught by Harvard pre-med students, meaning you will not only learn from the best and brightest, but you will gain real-world insight from current Harvard students.

11. UCLA’s Summer Springboard

UCLA, one of the top public universities in America, hosts an annual Summer Springboard program for high school students, with an Emergency Medicine academic track. As a member of SSB, you will get to live on UCLA’s beautiful Los Angeles campus, while studying under some of the best professors in the United States. At the center of your Summer Springboard program is the academic track you choose, with their Emergency Medicine track, you will take a course that is designed to give you a taste of the real-world college experience at a competitive university while learning basic medical skills and getting training on how to handle situations when medical care is not immediately available. UCLA’s simulations are designed to help you learn and practice medical techniques, including positioning and extraction, wound care, control of bleeding, stitches and sutures, usage of splints and slings, and other useful potentially life-saving skills. You will also, in small groups, learn how to research a simulated patient’s history and symptoms, create a diagnosis based on your findings, and develop a treatment plan. This study is meant to teach you how to respond to a patient just like a medical professional, by assessing information and applying your medical knowledge in high-pressure environments.

While future medical students may think that they know these facts, they might sometimes forget. That’s where summer medical programs come in.

Offered by some of the best medical schools in the United States, these programs give high schoolers a chance to experience life as med students. 

Whether in an overnight residential program or a day program, students get to attend classes and perform research, just like they will if they go to a real med school.

With these experiences, students can better assess their desire to become medical professionals. 

Even better, these experiences give students a head start in their studies, forming a knowledge base and connections they’ll need in their future careers.

With just a few weeks out of their summer, students can begin their journey toward a satisfying, but challenging, life as medical professionals.

Georgetown Summer High School Science and Medical Program (Washington, DC)

The summer high school science and medical program at Georgetown gives future doctors and nurses hands-on experience with the materials they’ll use in their future careers. 

Working at the Georgetown Medical Center, the program introduces high schoolers to the demands of a medical school curriculum while also showing them the possibilities available to medical professionals.

Georgetown offers several different programs, ranging from one to three weeks.

During the one-week Medical Academy , students can experience a number of Georgetown resources, including the Lombardi Cancer Center. 

In this accelerated program, students get a taste of medical essentials, such as human anatomy, biomedical ethics, and more.

The three-week Medical Academy goes further into four key fields, including anatomy & physiology, neuroscience, emergency medicine, social medicine, and public policy. 

Whichever field they choose, students explore the challenges and possibilities the track presents.

Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (Stanford, CA)

For students who want a long-term summer program, the Stanford Institutes of Medicine of Summer Research Program provides eight weeks of intense study. 

Bringing in the best young scientific minds from across the country, the program connects students with Stanford faculty and researchers, giving them hands-on experience with cutting-edge work.

Through the summer research program, students not only have their interest in research piqued, but they also get to add their perspective to ongoing projects. 

Faculty mentors and teachers take students through every step of the research process, giving them a full taste of scholarly work.

More than a mere internship or summer cap, the research program rewards students for their labor. Each participant receives a $500 stipend for their contributions.

With this hands-on experience, students are prepared to become better physicians and excellent researchers, ready to address the most significant challenges in the medical world.

National Institute of Health Summer Internships in Biomedical Research (Bethesda, MD)

For high schoolers who want to get a head start dealing with medical challenges, it’s hard to beat working at the National Institute of Health. 

One of the largest funders of medical research in the country, the NIH works with doctors and universities across the world to improve the health of Americans.

Through the NIH’s Summer Internships in Biomedical Research , high schoolers get a taste of the big leagues. 

Selected students will spend their time working with NIH-affiliated scientists in one of the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities. 

With access to more than 1150 laboratories on and off-campus, including the 240-bed Hatfield Clinical Research Center, students have ample opportunity to gain experience with the latest in devices and techniques.

Of particular note is the NIH’s commitment to addressing diversity concerns in the scientific community. The Institute encourages internship applications from underprivileged and minority communities, including those affected by economic and physical disasters.

Boston University Introduction to Medicine (Boston, MA)

Presented in partnership with the Boston University School of Medicine and the Department of Medical Sciences, the AIM Introduction to Medicine program provides high schoolers with an intensive three-week premed experience.

Working alongside BU faculty and researchers, students get a first-hand taste of the medical school experience. Over the three weeks, students cover a broad range of medical interests, helping them better develop their future plans.

In addition to attending seminars and lectures on topics such as anatomy and physiology, students also work in BU’s labs. In the final two weeks of the program, students collaborate to research emerging issues in medicine.

By the time students leave the program, they have not only a firm grasp on their future plans but also an advantage in understanding the latest medical concerns.

Nova Southeastern University Achieve in Medicine (Davie, FL)

Designed for high-achieving juniors and seniors, the Achieve in Medicine program from Nova Southeastern University is a five-day immersive camp. 

In every session, students work with Nova Southeastern faculty to gain hands-on experience as medical students. 

These camps not only inform students of the expectations they’ll need to meet but also will give them a head start on their research interests.

Nova Southeastern offers two forms of AIM learning. 

There is a day camp for high school students ranging from rising first-year students to rising seniors. Students spend their days on campus participating in seminars and laboratory experiments but do not live on campus.

Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors can apply for the residential camp. 

While living on campus for five days, students get the whole college experience, including meeting other med students and attending special events.

University of Washington: INSIGHT High School Program (Seattle, WA)

Designed as a sampler program for young scholars, the INSIGHT High School Program at the University of Washington adapts the school’s intensive summer internship program for high school students.

During the four weeks of the program, students are exposed to teachers and researchers in subjects such as public health, biomedical research, and medicine. 

Unlike many summer programs, INSIGHT invites applications from those who have recently graduated, giving them more time to decide on their future plans.

Regardless of their level, students in the INSIGHT program enjoy the benefits of working with academics at the University of Washington, doing the real work of a medical student.

Tufts University Mini-Med School (Medford, MA)

The Mini-Med School at Tufts University is exactly what it sounds like: medical school in miniature. 

Any high school student considering a career as a doctor or healthcare professional can sample life at Tufts Medical School. Even better, the Mini-Med comes in two versions, virtual and in-person.

With the in-person option , students get the whole med school experience. They work in labs, sit in seminars, and collaborate with their fellow future medical students.

In the virtual option , students get to see the school from the comfort of their own homes. Distance learning technologies connect students to Tufts professors and classes and allow them to interact with professionals worldwide.

Whichever track they choose, students will learn from Tufts faculty about essential issues, including diversity in medicine, immunology, and infectious diseases.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital High School Senior Summer Intensive (Cincinnati, OH)

For those looking to go into pediatric medicine, the High School Senior Summer Intensive at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital may be the best choice. 

As the title suggests, the program is for high school seniors only. But those who get accepted have an opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and experience in their field.

 A proper internship, the Summer Intensive gives seniors 20 hours of real medical work each week, for the course of eight weeks. Students work alongside mentors in one of nine pediatric specialties.

In addition to invaluable connections and experience, the Summer Intensive also allows students to get paid for their work. At a rate of $9.30 per hour, students learn the value of their time and expertise while they learn.

Those who complete the program leave ready to pursue further studies in Ph.D. or MD programs.

Wake Forest University Summer Immersion Program Medicine Institute (Winston-Salem, NC)

With connections to one of the nation’s top research hospitals, Wake Forest School of Medicine is a fine choice for anyone looking to become a doctor or healthcare professional. 

The University’s Summer Immersion Program in the Medicine Institute gives students an early look at the school’s offerings.

With two five-day camps offered each year, the program lets participants live like real medical students , including staying on campus.

In lectures and seminars taught by Wake Forest faculty, students learn about key topics such as pediatrics, cardiovascular pathology, and more. 

Working at Wake Forest Baptist Health hospitals, students get hands-on experience in labs and with patients.

Penn Medicine Summer Program (Philadelphia, PA)

Like all of the other programs on this list, the Bold Summers program at Penn Medicine connects high schoolers with real professors and researchers. 

Those accepted get to participate in every aspect of medical school life, from attending classes to participating in research projects.

The program follows the model of Penn Medicine’s first-year med program , and puts students in conversation with teachers and students in that program. They will stay in dorms, work in simulations, and participate in live demonstrations. 

That last point underscores the key difference at Penn Medicine. In many cases, students get to observe a surgery, watching their teachers apply the same skills they learn in the program.

Few other programs provide an experience quite so accurate. 

UC Irvine Summer Surgery Program (Irvine, CA)

Like Penn’s Bold Summer Program, the Summer Surgery Program at UC Irvine gives students access to the surgical process. 

But because it’s designed for those who plan to become surgeons, UC Irvine goes one step further and lets students participate.

The program begins with teaching students surgical center protocols involving safety and cleanliness. Students gain experience working with state-of-the-art technologies, including the school’s new da Vinci robot.

Finally, students participate in small group workshops supervised by faculty mentors . Students learn about anatomy and techniques in these situations, including ultrasound training.

Perhaps the most intensive of summer programs, the offering at UC Irvine is highly selective, only for the best of the best.

Stanford STaRS Program

Clinical Anatomy

The Clinical Anatomy Summer Program (CASP) at Stanford University  is for high school students considering careers in medical and health-related fields, such as medicine, surgery, dentistry, EMT/paramedics, nursing, biomedical engineering, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sports medicine, and medical education. 

This summer we will offer two in-person sessions and one virtual session that will introduce students to the anatomy of the human body. Students will attend lectures given by Stanford Medicine faculty, engage in anatomy activities, observe surgical demonstrations, and attend workshops with Stanford physicians.

Mentorship in Academic Health Care Administration

The Department of Surgery offers a 4-week, virtual mentorship program for high school students interested in pursuing careers in Healthcare Administration. Health Care Administrators manage the operations at academic medical centers, insurance companies, senior care facilities, and outpatient clinics. Our mentorship program invites high school students to explore the different career opportunities in health care and medical research administration at Stanford Medicine.

Stanford StaRS Program

Science Technology, and Reconstructive Surgery

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers a 7-week, summer internship for outstanding high school and undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical/biological sciences. This highly-selective program allows students to work on a research project in a given field, exposing them to the latest biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques. Not your average resume-builder, this opportunity is free to students who are looking to get a head start and hands-on training.

SMASH Academy

SMASH Academy is a free-of-cost, STEM-intensive college preparation program for underrepresented and low-income high school students. Students admitted to this program will spend 5 weeks at Stanford University, where they will engage in STEM coursework, participate in networking activities, and prepare for the college application process. Students spend 3 consecutive summers in this program to gain support throughout high school and connect with long-lasting mentors.

The SMASH Medical Curriculum is comprised of five sessions designed to be interactive and expose the students to a range of healthcare careers. Led by social science researcher Serena Bidwell, our instructors are medical students, residents, faculty, and staff from the Stanford Department of Surgery.

1. National Institute of Health (NIH) High School Summer Internship Program 

The highly competitive NIH High School Student Internship Program places students in real-life research capacities with medical professionals carrying out full-time biomedical research at the National Institute of Health.  Students are expected to work hard. This means that students will gain an authentic, hands-on experience that builds both career skills and one’s professional network.

  • Where:  Primarily Bethesda, MD., and various other locations.
  • Who:  High school juniors and seniors who are U.S. citizens, pass federal background clearance, and will be at least 17 years old at the time of the internship
  • When:  9 weeks during the summer

2. University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Summer Student Research Program

For the UCSF Summer Student Research program , students work in local clinics and science labs to gain hands-on experience in biomedical research.  Participants are mentored on a one-on-one basis with healthcare professionals and researchers.  The program includes access to workshops, seminars, training, simulations, and networking opportunities.  The internship concludes with a final student research symposium.

  • Where:  Oakland, CA (UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital)
  • Who:  High school juniors and seniors from low-income households and racial/ ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the sciences
  • When:  9 weeks from June to August

3. Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience High School Internship

Interns in the Max Planck program participate in research projects alongside neuroscientists, prepare a written scientific abstract based on their research project, and deliver a short presentation at the end of the summer.  Students gain experience with hands-on “wet lab” techniques such as genetic engineering, microbiology preparations, histological staining, and microscopy.  

  • Where:  Palm Beach, FL
  • Who:  High school students who are entering junior or senior year in Palm Beach or Martin County and are interested in brain science
  • When:  6 weeks from June to July

4. High School Senior Summer Internship Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital offers a competitive, part-time internship that pairs students with a mentor in several pediatric clinical specialties.  Participants get to shadow a mentor in the clinic and choose from clinical projects, research projects, or a hybrid of both.  Interns can also apply to work with specific mentors.

  • Where:  Cincinnati, OH
  • Who:  Graduating high school seniors
  • When:  8 weeks from June to July

5. Summer Child Health Research Internship at Children’s Hospital Colorado

Program participants have the opportunity to work in the lab with faculty from the Department of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

  • Where:  Denver, CA
  • Who:  Rising senior high school students from Colorado
  • When:  2 months from early June to August

6. Harvard Medical School Project Success: Opening the Door to Biomedical Careers 

The competitive Harvard Medical School internship is a powerful experience that can open doors to colleges and beyond.  The program assigns students to work with mentors in Harvard research labs.   Students get to participate in seminars and carry out site visits to hospitals and biotech firms.  This program even offers access to college counseling and computer training.  

  • Where:  Boston, MA 
  • Who:  Boston high school students (particularly from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented populations)
  • When:  8 weeks from late June to August

7. Indiana University Simon Cancer Center Summer Research Program 

The Simon Cancer Center pairs students with mentors in a facility with over 100 world-renowned cancer investigators.  Participants get to carry out research involving laboratory experiments, clinical work, and medical data analysis.  Students apply what they learn about research methodology to a capstone research project which is presented to the group. 

  • Where:  Indianapolis, IN (Bloomington)
  • Who:  High school students from populations underrepresented in the sciences
  • When:  8-week program from June to July

8. Medical College of Wisconsin Apprenticeship in Medicine (AIM)

This program offers two tracks.  The Apprenticeship in Medicine (AIM) is an intensive 6-week program in which students learn anatomy and physiology, and participate in suture clinics and heart dissections.  The Research Opportunity for Academic Development in Science (ROADS) is a 7-week program that pairs students with a principal investigator who serves as a mentor on a research project.  

  • Where:  Milwaukee, WI
  • Who:  Milwaukee area high school students from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented backgrounds
  • When:  6-7 weeks during summer

9. Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP)

Participants get to live on the Stanford University campus as they attend faculty lectures, professional development workshops, Stanford Medicine networking events, and a public health disparities research project.  The program provides mentorship and networking opportunities with Stanford faculty, health professionals, and pre-med college students.

  • Where:  Northern California 
  • Who:  Low-income, first-generation high school juniors from specific counties in Northern California
  • When: residential program, 5 weeks from June to July 

10. Magee-Womens Research Institute High School Summer Internship Program

11. Penn Summer Academies

The Penn Summer Academies offer two programs in medicine.  The Biomedical Research Academy introduces participants to the experimental basis of cellular, molecular, and genetic aspects of biology.  The Neuroscience Research Academy explores the biological foundations of the brain.  Both programs include lectures, faculty research talks, laboratory activities, group investigation, and research projects.

  • Who:  High school students from anywhere in the U.S.
  • When:  3-week residential program in July 

12. Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego: Summer Medical Academy

Applicants for the Summer Medical Academy are evaluated based on essay responses, enthusiasm for healthcare, academic success, extracurricular involvement and service, and a teacher recommendation.  Interested students should contact the program for more information.

  • Where:  San Diego 
  • Who:  15- to 19-year-olds from greater San Diego
  • When:   11-day sessions in both June and July 

13. National Student Leadership Conference on Medicine & Healthcare

Students in this program perform clinical rounds, learn medical examination and surgical techniques, and participate in diagnosis and treatment.  Participants learn about today’s healthcare challenges and explore advanced scientific research in areas such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.  The program is offered on the campuses of American University, Duke University, Northwestern University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Miami, and Yale University. 

  • Where:  Washington, DC, Durham, NC, Chicago, IL, San Francisco, CA, Miami, FL, and New Haven, CT
  • Who:  High school students
  • When:  Several 8-day residential programs at each location throughout the summer

14. Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine: Achieve in Medicine (AIM–High) 

This medical school immersion camp is designed specifically for high school students.  Participants gain hands-on medical experience with a focus on the use of technology in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.  Students can obtain CPR certification.

  • Who:  Academically strong high school students (frosh to seniors)

15. Georgetown University Medical Academy

Students in the Medical Academy study topics ranging from human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and infectious diseases to surgery, cancer, and biomedical ethics.  The program includes hands-on labs, a patient simulator, and dissection exercises.

HIV research grants for students underrepresented in medicine

Seeking medical students from communities that are underrepresented in medicine in the US who are considering careers in HIV prevention and/or vaccine research.   Application Deadline: Monday, December 2   Want to learn more? Join us for a  RAMP Informational Webinar

Wednesday, September 18 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm PT (5:00 pm – 6:00 pm ET)

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network, in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health, is investing in a young generation of HIV prevention researchers by providing medical students from communities that are underrepresented in medicine in the US with opportunities to conduct independent research while receiving mentoring, project and salary funding, training, and professional development opportunities.

The  Request for Applications  can be found on October 1.

Grant recipients will be mentored by HVTN-affiliated investigators while conducting research projects in areas of basic, clinical, behavioral, and social science. Projects will be:

Short-Term Projects: 8-10 weeks

Timed with a summer break or fourth-year research elective Travel to an HIV Vaccine Clinical Research Site in the US or abroad Attend and present at an HVTN Conference Maximum award of $20,000

Project Options

During the application process, scholars will have the opportunity to rank all of the research projects according to their interests.  Projects for the 2025-2026 cycle  will be posted on October 1.

Eligibility Criteria

Medical students who self-identify as being from communities that are underrepresented in medicine in the US Attending US MD, DO programs, or international medical schools that are US certification eligible (ECFMG) In good academic standing US citizen or US permanent resident or DACA status Interested in pursuing a future career in HIV research

Application Materials

To apply, visit  http://www.hvtn.org/ramp . The Request For Applications (RFA) and application materials will be available on October 1. Carefully read the Request for Applications before applying. Applications are due online by 5:00 PM PT on Monday, December 2.

Wednesday's violence at a Georgia high school and the arrest of a 14-year-old suspect follow a familiar pattern of previous school shootings. After every one, there's been a tendency to ask, "How do we prevent the next one?"

For years, school safety experts, and even the U.S. Secret Service, have rallied around some very clear answers. Here's what they say.

It's not a good idea to arm teachers

There's broad consensus that arming teachers is not  a good policy. That's according to Matthew Mayer, a professor at Rutgers Graduate School of Education. He's been studying school violence since before Columbine, and he's part of a group of researchers who have published several position papers about why school shootings happen.

Mayer says arming teachers is a bad idea "because it invites numerous disasters and problems, and the chances of it actually helping are so minuscule."

In 2018, a Gallup poll  also found that most teachers do not want to carry guns in school, and overwhelmingly favor gun control measures over security steps meant to "harden" schools. When asked which specific measures would be "most effective" at preventing school shootings, 57% of teachers favored universal background checks, and the same number, 57%, also favored banning the sale of semiautomatic weapons such as the one used in the Parkland attack.

Raise age limits for gun ownership

School safety researchers support tightening age limits for gun ownership, from 18 to 21. They say 18 years old is too young to be able to buy a gun; the teenage brain is just too impulsive. And they point out that the school shooters in Parkland, Santa Fe, Newtown, Columbine and Uvalde were all under 21.

School safety researchers also support universal background checks and banning assault-style weapons . But it's not just about how shooters legally acquire firearms. A 2019 report  from the Secret Service found that in half the school shootings they studied, the gun used was either readily accessible at home or not meaningfully secured.

Of course, schools don't have control over age limits and gun storage. But there's a lot they can still do.

Schools can support the social and emotional needs of students

A lot of the conversation around making schools safer has centered on hardening schools by adding police officers and metal detectors. But experts say schools should actually focus on softening  to support the social and emotional needs of students .

"Our first preventative strategy should be to make sure kids are respected, that they feel connected and belong in schools," says Odis Johnson Jr., of Johns Hopkins University's Center for Safe and Healthy Schools.

That means building kids' skills around conflict resolution, stress management and empathy for their fellow classmates — skills that can help reduce all sorts of unwanted behaviors, including fighting and bullying.

In its report, the Secret Service found most of the school attackers they studied had been bullied.

Jackie Nowicki has led multiple school safety investigations at the U.S. Government Accountability Office. She and her team have identified some of things schools can do to make their classrooms and hallways feel safer, including "anti-bullying training for staff and teachers, adult supervision, things like hall monitors, and mechanisms to anonymously report hostile behaviors."

The Secret Service recommends schools implement what they call a threat assessment model, where trained staff — including an administrator, a school counselor or psychologist, as well as a law enforcement representative — work together to identify and support students in crisis before they hurt others.

Earlier this year, the National Association of Secondary School Principals released new guidance for preventing school violence.

It noted that ensuring that educators, parents and students have access to mental health services is a "critical component" in preventing violence and increasing school safety. And the organization called for congressional action to provide support for those services.
