Both Marvel and DC are no strangers to the creation of characters that readers and viewers find interesting, engaging, and likable. However, several factors suggest that DC leads in this area by modern trends in the comic industry and the general values found in excellent storytelling. Three areas support the argument that DC possesses superior characters to Marvel. These include the depth and thoroughness with which DC characters are written, the ability to create successful legacy characters, and DC’s skills in handling strong villains that raise the character development of the heroes. While Marvel has advantages with large character casts, relatability, and popularity, they are overshadowed assets of DC heroes.

Both Marvel and DC host ensembles of characters that are diverse, well-written, and engaging. DC characters are still generally more interesting and have greater depth, possibly due to DC having characters that were regular humans but still superheroes before Marvel, with Batman rising in popularity sooner than Ironman. Because Batman, or Bruce Wayne, is a regular person trained to be strong, many find him relatable. However, the more engaging aspect of characters is often their presentation as vigilantes. DC is much more familiar with characters that work outside the law to either fight for justice, peace, or another purpose. It can indirectly give an audience hope that fighting for change against injustices can provide results. On the other hand, DC does not lack in more traditional heroes, with characters such as Superman being the original and model hero.

Time is another element that has influenced a vital aspect of superhero comics and media, legacy. While both Marvel and DC characters are currently susceptible to passing mantles of either roles or titles down to other characters, DC’s superiority in this ideology is related to their seniority in this practice. This process by which legacy is handled has become increasingly popular within the comic industry, and DC has been notably more successful in its implementation. For instance, characters that have inherited the Robin title or Supergirl’s recent emergence have been more favorably received than legacy characters within Marvel comics (Paterson, 2018). Successful handling of legacy is essential in the introduction of new characters, as they are created with an inherent connection to previous, sometimes beloved, superheroes. As such, it is possible to disappoint the audience with characters that do not live up to the previous standards associated with the title or role. DC presents much more success in cases of legacy characters than Marvel.

In most narratives, conflict, whether initiated by villains or other sources, is the driving force of character development and an engaging story. This is especially prevalent in a medium like a superhero genre that often pits good against evil. As such, the presence of villains that are challenging the characters is essential to not only interest a reader or viewer but also to create an arc for a character that is unique but cohesive. The DC universe is able to provide more consistently interesting, formidable, and complex villains. The Joker is perhaps the most notable example, as he possesses great showmanship and complex motivation but has also evolved over the course of the character’s existence in comics. Additionally, they present a number of traits that are unique and come into conflict with the characters in different ways. For instance, Lex Luthor and the Scarecrow offer DC’s main heroes serious challenges but do so in varied ways (Darell, n.d.). Additionally, DC villains pose greater threats to characters.

While the DC heroes, as mentioned previously, are incredibly powerful, the villains follow suit and pose a real danger to the livelihood of the characters or those they try to protect. A prime example can be found in Lex Luthor, a man with no superhuman abilities but with enough wealth, power, and social influence to make beating him a challenge and learning curve for his hero opponents.

The reason that Marvel and DC remain fierce competitors, is related to the fact that both provide a number of advantages in terms of characters. Marvel has been known to produce characters that are more realistic. This is often a case of Marvel heroes having more believable or weaker powers. Marvel also hosts a very wide range of characters, with the quantity of popular Marvel characters outranking DC. Additionally, Marvel characters have been proven to be more well-known and liked worldwide (McGuire, 2021). Despite these advantages, they are not inherently indicative of Marvel’s superiority. While Marvel hosts a large number of relatable characters, they lack the exact thoughtfulness and depth that is more commonly seen in the few but well-developed DC heroes. While Marvel may be popular, especially largely due to Marvel films, popularity is not an inherent sign of better quality. Within the comic industry, Marvel characters are more susceptible to reboots, under-developed writing, and certain repetitive tropes.

It is impossible to ascertain whether Marvel or DC characters are truly better; such a conclusion would be subjective. However, the paper illustrates, based on previous criteria, that DC offers a higher number of advantages over Marvel in terms of characters. With consideration of the current trends within the comic industry and the qualities of engaging storytelling, DC’s ability to provide characters with more depth, legacy characters that are appealing, and villains that are effective in character development positions them above Marvel.

The Great Debate: DC vs. Marvel

By Troy Aubut DC Comics definitely one-ups Marvel in so many ways: the complex and badass characters, the amazing storylines, the video games and the latest and upcoming movies. Everything about the franchise distinguishes itself from Marvel.

True DC and Marvel enthusiasts know that DC existed before Marvel was even a thing. Even though Superman wasn’t the very first superhero, DC Comics’ legendary character set the way for the superhero archetype, literally. And let’s be real, Superman alone would utterly destroy most of the characters in Marvel’s copycat universe. Batman, one of the other more common household names, is such a unique character that there really is no equal in the Marvel universe, just several Marvel characters with similar traits. Finally, not only are DC characters more serious and deeper than Marvel characters, they actually are super, not mutated.

The DC franchise also bests Marvel in the video game industry, with the Batman Arkham series proving to be fun, popular and tops lists as the number-one superhero game.

DC movies of modern times have also been huge hits because of the directors and the cast. Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” Trilogy is considered one of the best series of the comic book genre, and rightfully so. Zack Snyder, director of “Man of Steel,” will also be directing “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which will be the first attempt by DC to bring together a few of the most well-known superheroes all in one film, setting the stage for the Justice League movies and more solo hero movies. “Suicide Squad” will definitely be another DC movie to watch out for, especially since it will be the first live-action comic book movie to focus on villains. With all this in mind, it’s pretty obvious that DC is better than Marvel. Marvel

By Doug Hardman Tony Stark said it best: “We have a Hulk.” The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is one of the best things to come about since sliced bread. It has everything we could ever want from comic book movies: fun, action, heart and the occasional dose of romance to remind us of the humanity of these superheroes.

Ever since “Iron Man” premiered back in 2008, the MCU has been an ever-growing empire of success. We’d like to forget the listless “The Incredible Hulk” and the laughable “Daredevil” (Ben Affleck, circa 2004), but we accept our flaws because nothing is perfect. The MCU has spawned three Iron Man movies, two Avenger movies, a seemingly implausible, yet astonishingly successful “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and even the comically-horrible named “Ant-Man” that showed Marvel can make it work. Now, with their growing Netflix series (the gritty “Daredevil” and the dark “Jessica Jones” received huge praise), there’s no stopping the MCU.

And that was all just the end of Phase 2. Yeah, the MCU is going in phases because they have so much going for them. We’ve got “Civil War” approaching fast and heavy to kick off Phase 3 and between “Black Panther,” “Doctor Strange,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2,” we are gearing up for what is sure to be the greatest comic book explosion of awesome things ever: “Infinity War,” where the evil Thanos threatens to destroy the universe. Nothing has been more highly anticipated since the return of the Millennium Falcon on the big screen.

The DC universe has nothing going for it anymore. Yes, I love Batman, and I am so excited for a future-directed Batman movie by Ben Affleck, but he’s become old news. How many times are we going to reboot his story arc, give him a grizzly, unhearable voice, and watch his parents die? Superman is a weak character. Does anyone really buy the whole “We don’t know who Clark Kent is because he wears GLASSES” disguise? Wonder Woman is great, and she stands for a lot of great ideals, but as a character, she’s irrelevant. She works as an idea, not on screen played by a Fast & Furious model. And yes, “Suicide Squad” is going to be one of the greatest comic book movies to hit the screen. But what is one success compared to over ten successes?

There’s no competition here. The MCU has its flaws, but its track record, fan base and faithfulness clearly make it the better cinematic universe. So, for 2016, I have one question for the DC franchise: “Do you bleed? You will.” Game on.

1. introduction.

Both Marvel and DC Comics are branded as "superhero" publishers. The success of Marvel titles like Spiderman (1962), X-Men (1963), Captain America (1941), and Iron Man (1963) has made Marvel a well-known publisher. Furthermore, superhero media today are marked by all their shows, movies, and comics, including other characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Superman of the rival publisher, DC Comics. High ticket sales and viewership have been continuously generated by these superheroes. In an interview with Cosmopolitan in September 2018, Rachel Weisz described Wonder Woman as "the darned best superhero." Helen Mirren commented on her personality: "What can be better than a queen of superheroes?" The modern superhero became part of popular culture. The topic of superhero movies and their success in the film industry is of importance. In Yeh and Loftin (2019), the cost of superhero film production, in addition to the analysis of its economic premises and success, is analyzed. Reynolds (2018) highlighted the influence of superheroes on the box office both in the United States and worldwide. From a business angle, financial information was utilized by Al-Ahmadi and Zheng (2017) on superhero movies for performance analysis. In addition to these authors, superhero merchandise business was performed by Paul and Yeh (2014).

1.1. Background of Marvel and DC Universes

The DC and Marvel comic universes are two of the most legendary and iconic universes in popular culture and have attracted legions of followers and fans for eight decades. Both were born in the early 1940s (Marvel in 1939 and DC in 1940), and throughout this time, the two franchises, with different comic book collections, have been key to the popular culture of industrialized countries. This rivalry has been manifest not only through comic books, but also through TV shows, movies, and merchandise of all kinds that generate significant revenues for their parent companies. Despite having crossed dangerous paths, their interaction with the audience has led to the creation of a much more vast universe, indirectly interrelated and adapted to the value offered by the other. This chapter will focus on analyzing the public interest in comparing the two characters at the beginning and end of the period, the most influential characters, the most recurring battles, and the universe that are part of both the DC Universe and the Marvel Universe. In order to give support to the data analysis, an analysis of digital content institutionalized into collectible card games Magic: The Gathering and Adrenalyn XL was carried out in order to identify which characters from the DC Universe and the Marvel Universe are present in these games. Finally, by comparing with the universe offered by comic catalogs of both franchises, a possibility of obtaining a ranking of the most influential characters and the most recurrent battles can be obtained.

2. Character Creation and Evolution

When studying popular subjects, the issue of where to start is always at hand. A natural follow-up question considering the subject matter would be the two companies' approach to character creation. Therefore, in this section, we provide a comparative walkthrough over the years discussing how the first major characters were created in both companies and how both companies' character philosophies have shifted throughout the company history. The notion of character legacy, a cornerstone of comic publications, will be introduced, defined, and placed in a relationship with the cognitive mechanisms that determine character perception by the audiences. Throughout this section, we will refer several times to Jean Mitry's notion of character revelation, which is our strategy to close analyze characters in the quest for the ultimate nature of paragonic graphic character. By looking into some characters, other related connotations in story development and characterization can be inferred. Although often simplified in order to fit character creation stories in a few paragraphs, both Marvel and DC approaches to character creation prove to be much more complex and time-dependent changeling sets of guidelines that shift from character to character, concept to concept, and during the business cycles of both companies viewed in comparative terms. Some widely held general differences between both companies can be pointed out that are then relatively easy to spatialize. Thus, for Marvel we notice a focus on exploring characterization in exploiting the superhuman secretary in order to approach more colorful people through so-called Earth's Mightiest Heroes. A realization of an adult audience preference for realism, a shift in emphasis from character backgrounds to an interaction of character identities, and some scarce breaches of subject matter always ready to quench nitrates' obsessions can also help guide one through the history of character creation, than the purely graphic representations.

2.1. Key Creators and Influences

Two Jewish boys from Cleveland, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, invented the first superhero comic book. They financed the publication of the first thirty-eight page comic, "Superman Makes His Debut," in 1938 by becoming students at Eastern High School in Cleveland, pawning their future on this long shot, and founding DC Comics in the Palace Theatre Building. Unlike other American characters whose creation was usually a commercial venture for the hope of striking it rich, Superman was an exception. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster used Superman as a form of revenge; a revenge for the torment and teasing they had experienced in racism-filled Depression-era America. The Jews from the immigrant ghetto did not see this Hebrew who at first could not even speak English, but his sense of justice and decency made Superman a universal mythical hero that all mankind would come to admire. Siegel and Shuster soon discovered that the Jews were not the last to be victims of intolerance and marginalization, so they created an orphan that was abandoned by the planet Krypton of his origin and who landed in Kansas. Superman is a Jew hidden among the goyim. He is a persecuted race hidden by a stronger one. Some fundamental references in his formation will be: Jerry Siegel creates a clear duality but added to his friendship with Joe Shuster, collecting various images of masked avengers and writers that portray superheroes. The two boys, comic book and science fiction fans, were also influenced by the movies and the literature of "Doc Savage" about the adventures of David and the epic of Moses, and Shelley's "Prometheus." Power, Leadership, and Omnipotent Super-beings One of the most noticeable differences between the typical direct market Marvel and DC stories is that Marvel's are often character-oriented, with average citizens forced to utilize what meager powers they have to combat their foes, while at the same time struggling in a very realistic fashion to pay the bills and raise children. DC, on the other hand, far more often writes superhero stories, stories of omnipotent protectors with otherworldly powers that are well beyond the reach of their civilian charges. These characters are far more often involved in extraordinary quests, far more often lean towards fantasy rather than superhero fiction, and are much less likely to tout personal or familial problems. One of the major contrasts in these organizations, their presumed goals for a utopic society, and their means of attaining it, is best reflected in the concept of superhero that they each use. Kirby and Stan Lee have often commented that they used to have heartfelt arguments over the purpose, identity, and quirks of DC's superheroes. This reflects what is now a deep philosophical difference between the two companies. The traditional superhero is, to say the least, both classical and passive, a servant of what the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu calls "the citadel," or "the act of Creation or the idea of Authorship as the source and the criterion of Art and of Thought". For all their power, members of the superhero elite are no different from the rest of the population; they are neither producers nor creators, simply being able to act as they are told to, for to do otherwise than to conform to "the ethic of the citadel" would decide that they "ate the forbidden fruit," or in more prosaic words, made a mistake, and were hellishly punished. The main reason for this is that the superhero, as an archetype, is a convergence point, or a point where several modes of reinforcing the dominant ideology interact in a depressing, albeit effective, fireworks of often self-reinforcing representations. The superhero is cast in a kingly mold, a Hercules that has labored for a day, a symbol of human achievement, who encourages people to believe and bask in their future accomplishments. Ideologically, the superhero is, at first glance, almost a non-entity. Such telegrammatic messages stress the existential issues of the protagonist as the sign of creation and the condition of Art, circumventing any "mundane" criticism from the (washed) masses. Individual stories about superheroes have repeatedly shown how, after an alien mother toiled for nine hours and moonlighted as the primordial symbol of American fatherland, borne the virtues of the American way, the model enlightened citizens should supposedly attain, they were able to accomplish beauty, truth, and justice and triumph over evil. Anticipatory questions, or random comments, brought up by any planning set to deliver such results, have been revealed as unextricable traps, folly, or even evil.

3.1. Superheroes vs. Antiheroes

Superheroes are individuals with great power and a sense of moral responsibility. They do not kill; they place criminals in the hands of the law; they render people helpless through kindness, and they always fight for justice. Antiheroes are individuals who have the capacity to do great harm by taking what is not rightfully theirs, but instead, they do good deeds for unjust reasons. Although not as polite or respectful as superheroes, antiheroes display more reality - they realize the impossibility of forcing a supernatural respect for good upon those who are not always inclined to act responsibly or decently. Their good deeds are presented in a more private environment, which references society's acceptance of the escapism these heroes and villains often provide. With the creation of the antihero, all comic rules were destroyed and a new taste was born for more deep and controversial characters. And since Marvel's antiheroes were not necessarily villains, the stories became a mystery which led to worldwide admiration. Superheroes are expected to vanquish villains, either by incarceration or by death, but they are not meant to spill the blood of the guilty. The boundaries of superhero behavior reflect the ethical burden of the duty they have accepted, and the complexity of the dual identities they maintain. The rules are there to distinguish superheroes from ordinary people, not to prevent them from crossing over the moral boundaries of their world. Comic book superhero mythos deserves the archetypes and tropes, just as it deserves to have its sanctity questioned once in a while.

4. Impact on Popular Culture

The characters operated by both DC and Marvel have become the archetypes of numerous comic book tropes, providing a modern focus to great sagas of yesteryear. Their immense popularity is sometimes the only thing known about superhero comics. Today, the Western world is dominated by television, movies, and video games; every comic book has at least one of the three, and comics are peripheral players in popular culture media. This condition was sunk in popular culture, there are plenty of questions to answer. How much do these characters attract? Perhaps we need more heroes and hope in our lives? Perhaps war stories and gloomy drama, as superheroes and darkness seem to have taken over comics? Even doing so, another question will be: how apathetic are the customers about their behavior? The superhero universe has dominated movies and TV shows in recent years; with the influx of movie adaptations and trailers for the next few years, we start to see a decrease in the number of discovered heroes on screen and the introduction of different characters. In team series, the arcs that are not geared to the great villains begin to seek the great confrontation: the internal fights. But what can this tell us about the market of film adaptations of the characters of the publishers of monthly pamphlets? What is the trend, and most importantly, what is the consequence of the massification of material? The aim of this article is to measure the share of voices of superhero-based franchises led by two studios: DC and Marvel. The Consumer Behavior Survey of the Superhero Folios in the context of Popular Culture implies that fans have interesting behavior that guides their perception of the cinema and TV show products that direct the lives of their paper heroes. The exploration of the data allows the comic book fan group to discover their behaviors and motivations, which can be part of the future adaptations being made, serving as a tailored study for the meeting and showing that the fans, although they are not involved in the production process, have an impact on demand.

4.1. Film and Television Adaptations

Film adaptations of comic books can be traced as far back as 1940 with the release of the movie serials Batman and The Phantom, establishing a partnership with film and television that continues to the present. Both DC and Marvel characters have been adapted to the screen with many resulting film and television adaptations that have led to the widespread appeal of their characters in popular culture. Figure 3.1 and Figure 3.2 give a building block timeline of the film and television adaptations of DC and Marvel Comics characters respectively. Notice how the activity of creating adaptations for Marvel Comics characters peaks in the 21st century, while only in recent years has activity in this area risen for the DC Comics characters. DC Comics is a pioneer in the production of film adaptations of comic book characters. Since Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, a total of 27 films have been made that encompass numerous renditions of Batman and Superman, and 9 other DC characters. While the adaptations of DC characters returned a significant amount of revenue, Douglas claims that film adaptations of DC characters had little cultural impact and claims that this was due in part to bad long-term planning, lack of fresh storylines, and overload in producing Batman movies. Marvel is recognized for its universe continuity approach in film adaptations of comic book characters pioneered by the X-Men series (2000-present). Marvel's filmed universe has 4 times the characters of DC's with the latest releases Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, all leading to the box office juggernaut The Avengers.

5. Conclusion

In conclusion, despite the overlap between Marvel and DC in the construct of the hero defined by superpowers and costume, there is significant disparity based on the individual 'layers' that these texts provide. Each of these layers grants an opening to understanding the cultural values that not only separate the publishers themselves, but also position them as different entities within culture. We live in a world defined by the visual, and with that, agendas - political, socio-economic, national and even global. The superhero construct has outdated its original meaning hoping to answer all questions as oppositional forces like Marvel and DC command an audience. They have become gatekeepers and surveyors for what and who society expects from the superhero, based on ingrained and institutionalized values, influencing and being influenced by larger contextual notions of identity and society in return. It is curious to consider what alternatives would be available or even present if these publishers were not dominating the super-media landscape. More research should be undertaken to discover both the cultural and identitarian meanings that audiences take from these popular franchises. Research undertaken from a transdisciplinary position could bridge key areas where popular and youth culture, politics and visual culture all intersect and inform understanding. Providing such an analysis would be chips in the mosaic necessary to articulate the true function of the superhero in an increasingly global society.

5.1. Summary of Key Findings

The detailed examination of DC and Marvel superheroes' names, biographies, and powers has shown that Marvel creations are more closely associated with Anglo-Saxon names and nature and immensity observed in human world, either simple or extraordinary. Overall, DC superheroes are based on significantly higher number of mammals measured in character power frequency than Marvel superheroes. Based on our research findings, we can label Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and other DC most popular superheroes more “animalized” than Marvel superheroes. In this way, it can be concluded that organic matter (specifically living beings) had comparatively higher symbolic importance for the DC creators than for Marvel creators. This interpretation is to some extent consistent with Jung's associative opacity model applied to the superhero species, which aims to show a complex structure of symbols in the human mind. As Borges and Ortega y Gasset described, an individual is a collection of paradoxes burdened with other universes. We are a paradox and a mix of the metaphysical and physical. The metaphysical structure of life – cosmic, sublime, and at the same time, frightening – is cultivated by recurring metaphors in our minds, dictated largely through symbolism. It provokes the human imagination to dream beyond the horizon and aspire to reach out to the symbols it creates. It must have been fantastic to hear the old myths and adventures, which have a place in collective memory, created by our ancestors who also drew letters and spaces on the walls of the caves, even before the enormous amount of unique languages developed.

The Eternal Debate: DC vs. Marvel

The MCU is your best bet if you love continuity and a universe filled with rich and diverse characters. But, if you prefer dark, gritty, and tortured superheroes with plot armor the size of Asia, DC is the way to go.  Nomcy

In the eternal debate between DC vs. Marvel, I'll always be on team Marvel for a bunch of reasons. Here are some of the prominent ones: 

• Fleshed out characters with decent backstories ✔
• Fun and relatable storylines ✔ 
• Complex villains ✔
• Continuity within the extended universe ✔

Maybe I'm already biased, but it's no secret that Marvel has the edge over DC regarding their movies and box office successes. And it's not like they make better movies (they do in some cases) than DC. Instead, they just cracked the formula.

My first foray into the Marvel universe was with the X-men (back when Fox owned the rights to the characters). Storm and Rogue were my favorite characters growing up. And to ten-year-old me, Professor X and Jean Grey had the coolest powers ever (telekinesis and telepathy).

It's always a massive debate between die-hard superhero fans about which universe is better—Marvel or DC. While Marvel has an excellent track record of making lesser-known characters popular (Scarlet Witch, Vision, and Dr. Strange), DC created some of the most iconic villains ever (Joker, Lex Luthor, and Darkseid). 

So, with the help of my previously mentioned checklist, we'll explore all things Marvel and DC. But before that, a quick backstory. 

DC And Marvel Origins

The 1900s was the golden age of comics , with DC and Marvel leading the industry with popular characters like Superman, Batman and Robin, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Human Torch. 

Martin Goodman founded Marvel Comics, formerly Timely Comics, in 1939 to capitalize on the superhero genre. DC Comics already had the market cornered with bestselling characters such as Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman. DC released its first comics in 1934 and introduced the world to Batman (under Detective Comics) and Superman (Action Comics), their two most popular characters to date. 

In 2009, Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment Group for $4 billion and spent the next few years getting their money's worth and more. Then, they incorporated everything into a giant umbrella and launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), complete with blockbuster movies, television shows, and theme parks . 

On the other hand, DC Comics is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. (WB), and the studio handles everything from comics and animations to DC movies. 

Marvel Has More Established Characters

Marvel does an excellent job of fleshing out many lesser-known characters and introducing new ones to the world. Besides the heavyweights like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hulk, non-comic book fans know ones like Groot, Rocket, Nebula, Ms. Marvel, and more. 

Unlike Marvel, DC mainly focuses on popular characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman; they only recently started introducing others. 

The CW's Arrowverse helped them in that regard. They did a better job establishing characters like Green Arrow (Oliver Queen), The Flash, Batwoman, The Atom, Supergirl, Black Lighting and Thunder, Brainiac, and Killer Frost than the DCEU did. 

DC Has More Prominent Female Characters 

The DC universe has many established strong female characters and some of the best all-female teams (Birds of Prey)—I'll give them props for this part. 

Some of their best-written female characters include Wonder Woman and her Amazonian sisters, Supergirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Amanda Waller, Black Canary, Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Vixen, Zatanna, Bat Girl, Hawkgirl, Raven, Queen Mera, and Lois Lane.

The MCU can seem overpopulated with male heroes and powerful characters in the frontline. But lately, they are catching up with characters like Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), Jean Grey, Black Widow, Storm, Jane Foster, Nebula, Gamora, and Captain Marvel.  

Black Panther has also given us Shuri and The Dora Milaje. 

The Villains 

Asides from The Joker, Lex Luthor, Darkseid, and Brainiac (in the comics), many DC movie villains are one-dimensional or straight-up cartoonish. Steppenwolf from the Justice League movie was a ridiculous example. All it took was resurrecting the super-powered Kryptonian to defeat him. 

They didn't need to assemble the Justice League for that.  

Besides the iconic trio of Lex Luthor, Joker, and Darkseid, other DC villains fall short one way or the other. However, their anti-heroes fare better. The popular ones include Black Adam, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Deadshot, Jason Todd, Bane, and Deathstroke. 

Sidebar : The Joker's menacing reign could have ended years ago if Batman got over himself and killed the jokester, thus saving dozens of lives. Batman just locks him up in Arkham, where he escapes and wreaks more havoc the next day. But then again, Batman wouldn't be relevant without the Joker.   

Besides Thanos, the MCU has other well-written villains (e.g., Killmonger, Kang the Conqueror, Green Goblin, Red Skull, Ulysses Klaue, Hela, Ultron, and Namor). Their anti-heroes are also pretty good, for example, Loki, Deadpool, Venom, Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine. 

Relatable Heroes

DC characters are usually unrealistic or overpowered (Batman and Superman). Heroes in the DCEU are legends or gods, untouched by envy, greed, or ego. We see these characters make mistakes and learn from them in very few instances. Except for The Flash, after he's caused a flashpoint paradox.   

Superman is a god whose only weakness is a shiny green rock (Kryptonite), and he's sometimes allergic to magic when his plot armor isn't so thick. 

Batman is a billionaire orphan with a tragic backstory and fancy gadgets that makes everyone forget he's just a regular human fighting gods and aliens. He can leap from tall buildings better than Superman or Spider-Man. He never sleeps and is somehow always in his best form—without getting slow or tired. And, for every ridiculous feat he accomplishes, the unofficial catchphrase to explain it away is, "Because I'm Batman."

Marvel takes a different approach with its heroes. 

Iron Man is a narcissistic billionaire playboy with impulse and guilt problems, but he's also a genius. Captain America was a 98-pound weakling who was bullied and ignored because of his size. And after becoming a super soldier, he remained a boy scout who believed in fairness and equality. 

And while Thor is a god with family issues, he suffered numerous setbacks that helped him grow as a character (although the recent movies have made him a goofball with bad jokes). 

Animated Movies

I'll admit that DC's animated universe is top-tier. They excel in this regard. 

In terms of quality and quantity, they win this round. Some of their best entries include Justice League: War (2014), Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014), JL: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013), Justice League Dark (2017), Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010), and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (2017). 

For the longest time, DC trumped Marvel in this category. However, Marvel seems to be catching up lately with entries like Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and What If? 

Continuity And The Bigger Picture

Marvel excels at connecting most of its characters and storylines—case in point, all the standalone movies that led to Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The studio laid the groundwork for this ensemble film since the first Iron Man movie in 2008. 

Each movie built up the Thanos threat across a dozen films until you couldn't wait to meet this Big Bad villain that everyone is scared to piss off. 

DC tried to replicate Marvel's Avengers success with Justice League. And they still couldn't create something worthwhile. While the Snyder Cut was an improvement, it still wasn't enough to save the franchise. 

Maybe if DC didn't spend every few years rebooting Batman, they'd have better luck with other characters. Every Batman reboot brings a different version of the caped crusader, from Michael Keaton to Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattison. As a result, each performance is more inconsistent than the next.  

The MCU crafts exciting story arcs that blend into a tapestry, while the DCEU seems like a patchwork of random plots that try to force connections between movies. 

Box Office Numbers and Grossings

When it comes to the box office earnings and overall grossing, Marvel whoops DC's ass every time. The MCU has ten movies in the top 50 categories of highest-grossing films , with six entries in the top 20. After James Cameron's Avatar, Avengers: Endgame remains the second highest-grossing movie at $2.7 billion. 

Meanwhile, DC just has four entries, and three are Batman-related (The Dark Knight, Joker (2019), and The Dark Knight Rises). Aquaman takes the lead at $1.1 billion. 

Marvel also wins in the Ratings Game , with about 66% of MCU movies certified fresh, compared to DC's 54%. Black Panther is the highest-rated MCU movie at a 96% RT score, while The Dark Knight holds 94% for DC. 

The Verdict 

DC is great at making comics and animated movies, while the MCU has the upper hand in its cinematic aspects. Many fans can agree with this fact. 

But the truth is Marvel has gotten lazy with some of its recent movies by doing the same thing repeatedly. They probably subscribe to the mantra, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it."

I still like some DC productions, like the 2017 Wonder Woman movie and the Harley Quinn animated series on HBO. So I don't completely favor Marvel over DC. Nevertheless, the universe has its moments. 

At the end of the day, it all boils down to taste and preference since both universes have legions of fans. 

The MCU is your best bet if you love continuity and a universe filled with rich and diverse characters. However, if you prefer dark, gritty, and tortured superheroes with plot armor the size of Asia, DC is the way to go.

Marvel Vs DC Compare and Contrast

How it works

The introduction of comics and graphic novels began in the 16th century in Japan, but their popularization in America took place in the 30s. From that moment on, the popularity of comics has grown in Europe and around the world. The two most famous comic book companies are, of course, Marvel and DC.

While fans on both sides sometimes look to the other side with a belligerent stance, it is important to look at the similarities in both of these universes so that fans can truly experience the joy of the comics and the heroes they hang out with.

The hypothesis for this research paper is that Roger’s argument can be used when it comes to publishing companies Marvel and DC.

To write a comprehensive comparison on the topic, the author uses Roger’s argument as it allows both worlds to be combined. An understanding of the history of both companies will be discussed, as well as the respective global challenges facing both worlds. The author will use articles, videos, and comics where possible for reference from Marvel and DC.

In conclusion, the author will talk about a hypothesis that turns out to be either erroneous or correct, crystallizing the research conducted by the author.

Marvel and DC Comics Marvel Comics, or Marvel Worldwide Inc., was founded by Martin Goodman, who was born to Mo Goodman. He started his life in 1939 with the title Timely Publications before he became Marvel. He started publishing Westerns back in the early 1930s, but a new medium of comics caught Goodman’s attention, and Marvel Comics was born with the first appearances of now-famous action heroes, including the Human Torch. DC Comics started like this. The founder of this company was Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson from Tennessee. The company was originally called National Allied Publications [2] before becoming the company it is today. After money problems began, the company was renamed Detective Comics, Inc. and bought by another company that supplanted Wheeler-Nicholson. It is a division of Time Warner, which owns the rights to several popular comic book series.

Marvel created the Avengers – Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Captain America, Widow, Hawkeye and many more. [3]

DC created the characters of the Justice League – Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and more. [four]

Despite the fact that they both compete for sales and popularity, both universes share similarities, namely similar characters and the challenges they face.

Common symbols and themes Marvel and DC fans have been rivals ever since both companies embarked on their journey to fame and recognition in the last century. However, they both have similar characters and they both deal with similar issues that are important to readers and the world.

Using Roger’s argument, the author looked at the themes and characters that are featured in both Marvel and DC comics. They complement and enrich each other, and one is no better than the other, as they both use tools to inform and engage the reader. [five]

Some character similarities include Hawkeye and Green Arrow, Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, and Mortal Strike and its equivalent, Deadpool. All of these characters can coexist in the same universe, although they usually don’t. There were problems with crossing, but usually the universes are not connected. [6]

It should be noted, however, that both companies highlight relevant issues for their target audiences. Corruption, poverty, empathy, and self-sacrifice are common themes seen in both universes. In recent years, LGBTQ themes have been incorporated with several characters that belong to the community. Marvel and DC have also taken a proactive stance on equality, proving that both male and female superheroes are equally important in saving the world.

conclusions In conclusion, it should be said that the world is enriched with comics and their fans. It was also clarified that no matter what publishing company people support, they can find a common topic to discuss.

According to James Baumlin, “Roger’s strategy, in which panellists collaborate to find areas of common experience, allows the speaker and audience to open their worlds to each other” [7], creating a debate that is grounded in the understanding of all parties involved.

By following this idea, supporters of Marvel and DC can easily hit it off without losing their passion for their favorite comics. Both parties can agree to disagree by listening to each other, but in case of important questions, fans can band together to defend what is right for the common good.

The author reviewed the available materials and spoke with readers and supporters of DC and Marvel comics. After consideration by the author, it can be concluded that Roger’s argument can be used when considering the topic of “Miracle vs. DC” when it comes to important world issues. Both sides can put their differences aside and come together as a force to be reckoned with.

Marvel vs. DC: It’s time to settle the score

The dispute between Marvel and Dc has been going on since the 1940s. DC originated in 1934 and Marvel in 1939. Both carry a legacy of entertaining literature and inspirational content that have been popular among multiple generations.

In the following, there are the opinions of two journalists that will debate on which is better. Marvel or DC.

Marvel is better than DC: The true opinion

The debate between Marvel and DC has been the talk of controversy ever since they both came into existence, but as a Marvel fan, it is without a doubt that Marvel is better, and here’s why.

Firstly, Marvel movies have more characters that have more connections both with each other and in their storylines, while DC has a lack of continuity within their cinematic universe. Flop movies are movies that are highly unsuccessful and poorly favored, and DC has had many flop movies. “Catwoman,” was a disappointment at the box office with a total gross of $85 million, and “Green Lantern” faced a similar disappointment despite Ryan Reynolds efforts.

Marvel on the other hand has had more successful box office numbers. For example, “Black Panther” grossed 1.3 billion worldwide and is #14 of the highest grossing movies of all time. From the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the origin story of Iron Man grossed over $585 million and is considered a timeless marvel movie. In comparison, doesn’t DC have more flops?

Some may argue that DC has better comics, but from the corny dialogue to the cheap CGI, it is without question that most of DC’s movies are just plain horrible. DC movie plotlines are dull, for an example. If you watch “Justice League,” then you will find Superman defeating all the members single handedly. While that is not the case in any Marvel movie. Consider the movie “Captain America: Civil War.” The battle between team Captain America and team Iron Man was evenly adjusted even though vision was on iron mans side. The amount of action is either to much or too little.

In the movie “Steel,” the action scenes had everything but action. The Justice League is often said to have too much action and too grim and gritty. DC storylines can also be difficult to follow with their casting inconsistencies, making the stories all-the-more confusing. DC tries hard to emulate marvel movies but fail to reach Marvel’s standards. For example when Marvel did a crossover with “Secret Wars,” DC followed with “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” “Doom Patrol” copied the “X-Men” (or vice versa), “Swamp Thing” copied “Man-Thing” (or vice versa), and so on.

“I believe Marvel is better than D.C.,” said Freshman Rahanna Banks. “I was introduced to both at a young age, but I leaned more towards Marvel. Marvel has more characters and a variety of stories, which we now see to be coming together and creating one big story. DC to me just seems like one group of people that they focus on and not other characters, leaving disinterest.”

Marvel heroes are more nostalgic and have an incomprehensible range of the characters. There are over 70,000 characters in the MCU, while DC only has around 10,000 characters. The MCU never disappoints to connect characters to a storyline and portray them in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Marvel also has some of the best superteams. The most popular teams include “The Avengers,” “Fantastic Four,” “X-Men,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “The Eternals.”

“Marvel has a better storyline and is more structured than DC,” freshman Scarlette Ricotta said.

Besides movies, Marvel has also had huge successes with series like “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D,” “Moon Knight,” “What if?..” and more. These shows go into deeper detail for both main and side characters and showcase the versatility Marvel has to go from live-action movies, series, and animated.

“I prefer Marvel because it isnt the same material recycled over and over again and actually has an interesting point of view unlike DC,” freshman Kennedy Ewing-Chow said.

In general, Marvel is better than D.C. due to its complex characters, better superteams, relatable, superheroes, and development. There are so many aspects of Marvel that DC just can’t compete with.

DC is better than Marvel: The darker opinion

The DC vs. Marvel debacle has been going on for as long as the two have existed. In the past, the controversy was between the comics but currently, it’s been a debate of the cinematic universes. Though Marvel has some deeming qualities, such as their movies, DC is just overall better.

While watching or reading DC, ever noticed there are more iconic villains? Marvel hardly has any good villains that last more than two movies. Plus, their back stories are dainty and not incredibly in-depth. DC, on the other hand, has so many incredibly interesting villains that have rich backstories and easily make them more favorable.

“DC’s villains are a lot more realistic, edgier and violent. They give off more of a scarier vibe,” said senior Collin Amaya.

Numerous times, DC has explored conceptual and deep meaning within their characters. With Disney now owning Marvel, this means that there are stricter guidelines to abide by, excluding Deadpool. This leaves them will less room to play with deeper, scarier ideas. DC has explored darker themes including the backstory of Reverse-Flash, the Death of Superman, and Wonder Woman killing the Justice League. Of course there are many more, but these examples show that comic books and DC are not just for kids.

A very iconic character is The Batman, who laughs. In the “Dark Days: The Casting,” Batman kills Joker. This released a toxic gas turning Batman into the biggest nightmare Gotham could face. With his terrifying grin, he kills the majority of his allies and turns his son Damien Wayne into a mini-joker.

Marvel has a fantastic cinematic universe with beautiful storylines and characters, whereas in that area, DC is lacking. The last pretty popular movie DC came out with was “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson as Batman. Before that was a train wreck of other movies that had a lot of potential but sadly flopped. Where DC does exceed though is in its animated series.

For example, DC made a well known series called “Batman: The Animated Series.” This was produced by Warner Bros Animation. It’s a well made story following the main character batman, voiced by Kevin Conroy. It’s a four-time Emmy winner. It was followed up with a Justice League cartoon made in the early 2000s.

“DC definitely shows more emotion and you feel how the characters are feeling,” said Junior Nathan Carrasco.

Overall, DC is better than Marvel. With its more conceptual ideas, in depth storyline, characters, and iconic villains, DC wins by a landslide.

The Untold Truth Of The Marvel Vs. DC Rivalry

In the long history of pop culture, there are very few rivalries that have sparked debates as intense as the one that rages between Marvel and DC — especially when you consider that both sides of this particular conflict were shaped by a lot of the same people. Since 1961, it's raged on letters pages, online arguments, and even within the comics themselves, and in the era when superhero movies are the biggest thing in Hollywood, it hasn't stopped.

But how did we get to this point? Was it just a good-natured competition that was taken to the extreme? The corporate world's most successful attempt to inspire brand loyalty for what basically amounts to a product? The natural endpoint of wondering if Thor could beat Superman in a fight? As it often is, the truth is a little more complicated, and winds its way through everything from irate editors to softball games. Here's the truth behind the rivalry between Marvel and DC.

Definitive Concepts

Technically, comic books had existed long before Superman burst onto the page in 1938, and even the idea of telling long-form adventure stories with panels and word balloons wasn't exactly new. If you've never gone back and read the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip from the late 1920s, for instance, you'd probably be surprised at how much they feel like the kind of adventures you'd be seeing in superhero comics 20 or even 30 years later (no, really, Mickey Mouse ). When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster finally got someone to take a chance on the pitch they'd been shopping around for a few years about a baby from the planet Krypton who grew up to be Earth's greatest hero, though, they changed pretty much everything about the medium and ushered in a revolutionary new genre.

This new "superhero" concept took bits and pieces from sci-fi stories, pulp novel vigilantes, and those lavishly drawn adventure strips that were running in newspapers and combined them, and that idea worked. Superman himself was a massive hit, and by 1940, less than two years later, the newsstands were flooded with hundreds of new characters, most of which you've probably never heard of: The Green Turtle, Stardust the Super-Wizard, the Blonde Phantom, the Boy King and his Giant, Nightmare and Sleepy — those are some of the most well-known characters from that original boom that didn't survive.

There were a few that did, however, and those are the ones you definitely know, with Batman and Wonder Woman being at the head of the pack. The Flash, Green Lantern, Captain America and the Human Torch were in there, too, but even they couldn't make it through the entire time. Every one of those characters found their titles come to an end by the end of the '50s, if only for a few years.

Dubious Co-opting

The Golden Age also prompted something that would become something of a tradition in superhero comics: taking the most popular thing in the medium, ripping it off, and putting your own spin on it. Bill Finger and Bob Kane did it with the Shadow, debuting a blatant knockoff called Batman in the pages of Detective Comics , and there were countless burgeoning creators who did their best to file off the serial numbers and make the next Superman.

The most successful of these by far was, of course, Captain Marvel, the character who would eventually become known as Shazam . He was such a blatant knockoff, in fact — to the point where he's even throwing a car around on the cover of his first appearance, just like Superman — that he was eventually ruled to be infringing on the copyright, which led to DC eventually acquiring the character 40 years later. He was also wildly popular in comics, with Captain Marvel Adventures , which ran every two weeks, outselling the monthly Superman books.

But even though he lagged behind Shazam in comics sales, Superman had immediately crystallized as a pop cultural icon, partly because each was one of the first to branch out from the page and into another popular medium. In his case, it was a radio show so popular that they had to invent a plot device that could take Superman out of action — Kryptonite — so that voice actor Buds Collyer could take a break. That popularity gave Superman and his publishers a durability that allowed them to weather the oncoming storm. When superheroes lost their popularity after World War II and comics publishing experienced its first collapse, Superman was one of the few to stick around uninterrupted.

That enduring popularity, along with the fact that everyone else was floundering, also gave that publisher the chance to acquire or merge with many of their former competitors, one of which would give them a new name. While the company would formally be known as National Periodical Publications into the '70s, they'd eventually rebrand around their other flagship character as "Detective Comics" — DC for short.

Distinguished Competition

Since they'd cornered the market on the most popular characters in the genre — and since they'd been one of the primary forces behind the restrictive censorship of the Comics Code Authority, which kicked the legs out from under the popular crime and horror publishers who had filled the void after the superhero crash — DC cruised on through the '50s with virtually no competition. Their flagship character had even leaped over the transition from radio to television in a single bound.

And then Stan Lee and Jack Kirby came along and completely reinvented superheroes.

Weirdly enough, it all happened because of DC. After the Golden Age, the company that had originally published Captain America Comics  limped along under a couple different names (Timely, then Atlas). They'd tried to revive their most popular character in the '50s as Captain America: Commie Smasher , but wound up with an extremely short run of comics so ill-advised and jingoistic that they were later retconned to be the adventures of a fake Cap whose bootleg super soldier serum had driven him insane. After that, they settled into pretty formulaic (but generally well-drawn) romance, war, and monster comics about space invaders with names like Shagg, Spragg, and one oddball called the Hulk (not that one, we'll get to him in a second). 

In 1960, however, DC struck gold by putting all of their popular superheroes, and Aquaman, into a single book as the "Justice League of America." The publisher of Atlas, Martin Goodman, employed that time-honored strategy of ripping off a popular idea. He assigned Stan Lee, who he'd hired back in the '40s solely because he was he was his wife's cousin with aspirations of being a writer who had plenty of ideas and energy, and Jack Kirby, the veteran artist who had co-created Captain America in the '40s, to come up with a superhero team book of their own.

The thing is, Lee and Kirby approached things a little differently. Rather than just having a handful of super-powered good guys trounce an alien threat, they structured their "superheroes" like one of their sci-fi horror comics. A group of scientists, desperate to beat those dastardly commies to the moon, were exposed to radiation that gave them strange mutations, including turning one of them into a full-on monster. Then they fought off the bad guys. The only difference between this story and one of the lurid tales about Gruto and Korilla is that the people who would've been the tragic figures in a sci-fi comic triumphed and came back the next month to do it all again. The company would later rename itself after Timely's first comic from 1940, Marvel Comics , and that comic, Fantastic Four , wound up being so successful that an entire universe would be built on its foundation, and another one would be rebuilt.

Dismissive Comparisons

In the wake of Fantastic Four , Lee, Kirby, Steve Ditko, Marie Severin, Don Heck, and the other members of the original Marvel bullpen launched more series, and virtually all of them were a hit. The exception was the Hulk, which was canceled after only six issues, but he took off when he got a second shot after appearing in the first issues of The Avengers . It's easy to see why they were so successful, too. The ongoing dramas and soap operatic plots that influenced the Marvel books found a foothold with older readers — notably older teens and the college crowd — while the competition was still targeting a younger audience. Plus, the Marvel books were really good, with Lee's over-the-top dialogue soaring along with Kirby and Ditko's increasingly stylized art.

That's not to say that the DC comics of the early '60s weren't good. They're actually great. One of the many benefits that DC got from absorbing so many of their competitors in the '40s and '50s was that they got Otto Binder, the writer who had made Captain Marvel Adventures such a huge success, and made him one of the primary architects of the Superman titles. The '50s era of sci-fi Batman stories isn't remembered all that fondly, but Binder's work on Superman was full of concepts that are still in use today, from Brainiac to the Phantom Zone to Supergirl. Throw in the Silver Age reboots of characters like the Flash and Green Lantern, and DC was putting out the best comics they'd ever published. They're just a very different kind of good from what Marvel was doing, and when you saw the two companies' mags next to each other on the newsstand, the DC books looked basically the same as they had for ten years. The Marvel books, on the other hand, looked new and exciting, with blurbs that promised senses shattering drama and heroes in the kind of peril that Superman could never possibly face.

Stan Lee, who positioned himself as the friendly face of Marvel Comics — which, not coincidentally, involved actually crediting the writer, artist, and letterer in every issue, something DC wouldn't get around to for another decade — seized on this. In the letters columns that ran in Fantastic Four , he'd trash "the Distinguished Competition" as being "Brand Ecch," and insisted that Marvel's comics were the ones that respected the readers' intelligence, unlike those other guys. DC, for what it's worth, rarely if ever mentioned Marvel in their letter columns, but the fact that said columns were mostly devoted to editors arguing with children didn't help. Lee's brand-building diatribes eventually got so bad that readers who enjoyed both publishers wrote in asking him to stop insulting their taste. Lee responded by running a poll to see if the readers wanted him to keep talking about how bad DC was, or if he should just stick to talking about how much better his own comics were. With that, the battle lines were drawn.

Departing Creators

Over the next ten years, Marvel produced some of the best superhero comics ever published, including the Galactus story from Fantastic Four that's basically the blueprint for every "event" comic since, and "The Final Chapter" from Amazing Spider-Man #33, which featured imagery that defined the character so well that it was used in Spider-Man: Homecoming 50 years later. They'd also broken into TV with cartoons, which mostly had bad animation, but great theme songs. Clearly, they weren't going anywhere anytime soon.

With that in mind, DC made one of the boldest moves in years: they hired Jack Kirby in 1971. It was no secret that Kirby had done the lion's share of work on Fantastic Four . One of the reasons that he was able to write so many comics while also editing the whole line is that he and the artist would hash out a plot, usually a couple of sentences then the artist would draw the entire issue, often writing in dialogue in the margins, and Lee would then script the dialogue for the finished pages. Kirby, however, felt that Lee had taken the lion's share of the credit, and he wasn't alone. Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko left Marvel a few years earlier, partly due to a similar personal conflict with Lee that saw their last year of Amazing Spider-Man stories produced without the two of them speaking to each other.

DC offered Kirby a massive amount of freedom and creative control that essentially meant he could do whatever he wanted, which is what he did. After a few months of ads announcing that "The Great One Is Coming," Kirby's run at DC debuted in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen , and then moved onto the epic "Fourth World" saga that ran through New Gods , Mister Miracle , and Forever People as well. He was writing and drawing a complete, often groundbreaking comic every two weeks, introducing a grand mythology that was built around a conflict with Darkseid, an alien god who embodied evil. He worked out a lot of his frustrations there, too, particularly through a pretty vicious parody of Stan Lee named Funky Flashman who showed up in Mister Miracle . During his time at DC, he also produced the bizarre, dystopian, and weirdly prescient OMAC (starring the One Man Army Corps) and the supernatural adventures of The Demon .

Considering he'd just come off 108 issues of Fantastic Four , Kirby's work at DC was surprisingly short-lived, although it remains hugely influential. By 1976, though, he was back at Marvel with the same level of creative control, doing his third run of Captain America and creating The Eternals , another mythical saga of space gods. He also did Devil Dinosaur , which is nine issues about a giant red Tyrannosaurus kicking the living hell out of other dinosaurs and occasionally aliens, which rules. By the '80s, he was mostly working in the more stable field of animation, but went back to DC for Super Power and The Hunger Dogs . Either way, Kirby's tenure at DC proved that even the most Marvel Comics creator there was could cross the street, and that DC was willing to try their own hand at replicating the success of others.

Dueling Corporations

Throughout the '70s and '80s, the first generation of creators who had grown up with the Marvel Universe became the people behind the comics, swapping creators back and forth and attempting to keep up with each other. As the people in the offices were all located in New York (DC relocated to Los Angeles in 2015), most of them were even friends — there's a truly weird unofficial crossover from 1972 in which a group of creators were on a road trip that took them through DC's Justice League of America and Marvel's Amazing Adventures and Thor . Staffers at the two companies would also square off for softball games in Central Park, although former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter alleged that DC would bring in ringers to win.

As for the comics, the creators would switch back and forth between the two companies, often breaking in at one and then doing major work at the other. When X-Men was the most popular Marvel book in the '80s, for instance, DC hired two creators who had started at Marvel, George Pérez and Marv Wolfman, to do their own similar superhero soap opera with New Teen Titans . In the late '80s, when Todd McFarlane and Rob Liefeld were bringing a whole new style to DC in Invasion and Hawk & Dove , DC hired them to take Spider-Man and New Mutants in new directions. After Marvel had success with Secret Wars , a 12-part crossover featuring all of their most popular characters, DC did Crisis on Infinite Earths , a 12-part crossover featuring all of their characters that ended up eliminating their Silver Age multiverse and rebooting the universe to be more like Marvel's.

By the end of the '80s, there was a corporate element to it, too. In effect, DC's purchase by Warner Bros. was started in 1967, and by the time the dust settled, the studio had designs on turning DC's roster of popular characters into movie stars — something they did with great success when Superman: The Movie was released in 1978. Marvel, meanwhile, had been through a series of parent companies, including a period when they were a division of the Perfect Film and Chemical Corporation, before incorporating as Marvel Entertainment Group in 1986. In 2009, though, Marvel — after bouncing back from bankruptcy in the late '90s and finally getting on the big screen in a way that could challenge Warner's superhero film franchises — was bought by Disney, bringing the two companies into the same strata of corporate ownership, and ensuring that their years of rivalry will continue indefinitely, while pretty much everyone in the world watches.

Dream Crossover

Long before Disney took over, though, the corporate aspect of comics publishing led to one of the strangest moments in the history of their long rivalry. As Shooter recounts, there was a moment in 1984 when Marvel came very close to taking over the entire DC Universe — literally.

The short version was that someone at Warners realized that while the characters were a gold mine for action figures and other licensed products, DC was losing money publishing comics, and figured they'd be better off letting someone else publish them. The obvious choice? Marvel. They've got experience publishing comics, right? Shooter was approached with an offer of the publishing license for DC's characters, meaning that Superman and Batman would join G.I. Joe and Star Wars on the roster of Marvel's licensed comics, and give Marvel complete dominance of the superhero genre.

If it had happened a few years earlier or later, the comics industry could be very different today, and it got as far as Shooter making a full pitch for how they'd pull it off. Alas, a smaller publisher sued Marvel around that time, alleging that they were an illegal monopoly because they already controlled so much of the comics market. "When you're being sued under anti-trust laws," wrote Shooter in 2011, "it's a bad time to devour your largest competitor."

Debate: which is better — marvel or dc.

Side 1: Recently there’s been a lot of hype about Marvel, but is it really all that everyone claims it to be? Not quite. Marvel’s recent popularity seems to be caused by its crazy flood of recent movies, which is going to make them seem more popular because they have more viewers in a given time frame, even if they were to get the same amount, or less, viewers per movie when compared to DC ones. Meanwhile, DC has been going crazy with TV shows for ages, and many of them are pretty popular, while Marvel seems to have only recently gotten into this area. This, of course, does not in itself make DC better, but the fact that they have had so many popular TV shows at all says something about their storytelling and animation. It also helps that DC hasn’t had to worry about copyright issues when creating their TV shows and movies, which is something that has limited Marvel quite a bit. This gives them more freedom of creativity and plot creation, thus making it easier to produce high-quality entertainment.

Side 2:  Although DC has made a few great movies, usually involving Batman, they can’t hold a candle compared to the list of hits Marvel has put out. We need to remember the 2002 Sam Raimi Spiderman films were huge contributors to the current superhero movie phenomenon. I worked in a movie theater for a few years, and I asked the owners what their busiest movie was; they told me when the original Spiderman movie came out they had a line out the door and wrapping around the parking lot. Marvel has managed to make something that was once either purely children’s entertainment or the hobby for nerds into a mainstream sensation. As far as TV shows are concerned, DC may have more live action dramas than Marvel, but I’d bet way more people will recognize an animated Spiderman or Hulk than the live action Arrow stars. To put it simply, Marvel just has a way better image than DC. Even their worst movies are better than Batman vs Superman.

Side 1:  To say that Marvel has the most recognizable characters is a bit simplistic. Yes, maybe more people would recognize Spiderman before they would recognize the Green Arrow, but that same argument could be reversed. More people are likely to know who Superman is than they would know Hawkeye. Plus, it’s a common belief that Superman is the original superhero in terms of defining what a superhero is. If that’s not a point in DC’s favor, I don’t know what is. Also, in terms of villains, whose are the most well known? DC’s villains. The Joker, Harley Quinn, The Riddler, all of these are names that most kids grew up hearing, while, until recently, Marvel’s villains were not quite as infamous. Why would they be so well known if they weren’t great villains? In this area, DC has done much better for far longer than Marvel has. Marvel may be the current fad, but the question of who will remain superior is something that only time will show, and that is something DC has been pretty good at keeping up with.

Side 2: Marvel didn’t just change how modern cinema portrays comic heroes. They revolutionized modern television writing in general. Marvel was a pioneer of crafting connected worlds that impact each other, something DC is trying to catch up to. By writing their films in a way that even the most minor character in some sequel can come back in an Avengers title, Marvel is able to increase audience engagement, even if it’s in the third Thor movie. What’s more important, is that their movies generally star characters that all ages can enjoy. Recently DC has tried to make their movies way too dark. I’m sorry, but you can’t have your main character wear a red spandex and cape then try and have a serious plotline. Not to mention the fact that Marvel movies almost always have way better special effects. I think it speaks for itself that their biggest villain is a large, wrinkly chinned, purple giant with a magic glove, and I still totally believed he was actually walking around on set.

I thing that DC is better than Marvel because DC has a history while marvel has not….Ok everybody knows who spiderman is but everybody knows who Batman and Joker is …..I agree that marvel has more fans nowadays but I think that Marvel is totally unrealistic…Dc superheroes have a base of existence alike Batman its a sociopath who is simple and fights crime, Joker and Harley are phytopaths (love you Harley ).To sum up I agree that DC has a lot of supernatural powers alike Poison Ivy’s ( love you Ivy) since this is comics but a lot of realistics such as Harley Batman Huntress Joker a thing that Marvel doesn’t have at all!!

Marvel heroes backstories are just wack. Superman did not meet his parents, Batman watched his parents get killed, Starfire got betrayed by her own sister, The flash lost his mother and his father got arrested for a crime he did not even commit .Most of the justice league member lost their parents.Black Widows origin story made me laugh ????????????????????.

If there’s not a female villain then, WHAT IS HELA? A man? Did you just completely skip over Thor’s sister? All of your points are wack. All the backstories are unique and different. It allows the different points to be allowed to be connected to the viewer/reader. Marvel is my preference but they are both good. I understand if you like DC better but make sure you understand before you judge. You clearly don’t.

Totally agreed in every single thing you said…. Also watch teen titans, birds of prey,suicide squad and Harley Quinn show (the last three for those who love Supervillains)

backstories, plot twists, the character’s personality, their unique powers, their little inside jokes, the playlists for movies, the movies slightly mention stuff and then in upcoming movies everything links together in a way you would never imagine, deaths are normal, you can expect the unexpected, some of the quotes hit home and lastly the actors/actresses have actual personalities outside of filming

I think they’re both better in their own ways. Having grown up alongside them, I’ve always loved both DC and Marvel. Personally though, I have a slight preference for DC. For those people who insult DC by comparing it to MCU, you’re so ignorant.

1. I have no problem with people stating that they do not enjoy fandom, but at least list some valid claims. Don’t compare 70+ years worth of plotlines and history to a movie franchise that’s only a decade old.

2. For those people who claim that DC’s heroes are all too perfect, you’re wrong. Each of their characters have their own flaws and issues that they have to work through. I mean, have you seen Batman (don’t even get me started on New 52)?? DC also tends to be a lot darker than Marvel simply because they play around with the greys. Overall, that just makes their entire fandom all the more interesting.

3. Their villain gallery is so diverse. Each one has their own backstory and it just adds to the plot. Also, there’s a huge range of villains from the small time criminals to the big bads like Darkseid or Granny Goodness or the Anit-Monitor.

4. DC’s animated-verse is just so amazing that it outshines Marvel in this category (Other the Spectacular Spiderman. I love that show).

5. The toxic MCU fanbase. I hate that this is one of the factors that drives me away from Marvel because Marvel does have some pretty dang good arcs. I hate that whenever I say one good thing about DC out it the open, I’m immediately attacked by so many toxic fans telling me why my opinion is wrong. I mean?? It’s a preference?? Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion?? I wasn’t even trying to attack anybody??

So yeah. That’s pretty much my entire take on this.

i would also like to add, even though marvel heroes aren’t gods or immortal, that makes them even better. it shows that regular humans can be super, and that you don’t have to have super strength or fly or be super fast to be an avenger. iron man has his brains, black widow is a human just looking to redeem her past, clint is a father who wants the best for the world. thor is the god of thunder, but even he’s one of the few characters who are “demi-gods or gods”. captain america was a small guy who just wanted to get rid of the bullies, and hulk is a smart guy who can get uncontrollably mad and has to learn how to control it. everyone has their faults, and everyone works together as a team. just because they’re not gods doesn’t mean they can’t be heroes.

I personally think marvel is better than dc. for all of you who say marvel can’t make tv shows, there’s wandavision, and it’s so good. they’re making loki, what if, and falcon and the winter soldier. wandavision takes on multiple years of film, with the actors and actresses having to learn the different forms of speech for each given century. each character has their own arc, and they all change in their own different, unique ways. you learn to see each characters’ faults, and you grow to love them, even the villain. preeetyy sure loki is the most beloved villain, and his and nebulas’ character arc is masterful and amazing to see. especially nebula, i loved seeing her blossom and growing from her past. their special effects are amazing, and the costume and makeup is remarkable. their orchestrations are beautiful, and personally i can relate to many of their faults. every character has their own cracks, and you love them even more for their insecurities. perhaps it makes them more lovable. marvel also creates their movies in a way in which EVERYTHING comes back around. for example, the song that fury was playing in caps’ apartment in “captain america: the winter soldier” was the same song that SPOILER ALERT peggy and cap were dancing to in the end of endgame. marvel directors knew time travel would be involved, since steve IS in fact the dad of peggys children. i could go on for hours, but thats my case. im not saying dc is inferior to everyone, this is my opinion, therefore it differs from others’. i dont mean to offend anyone 🙂

FYI I’m supporting DC. (Ignore my grammer XD) DC is the clear winner if you are considering everything. DC could have been better in movies if they didn’t cut half the things that were filmed and change the story arcs. Marvel’s success in movies are mainly coz of the actors (script was also gud) but that’s it. Half of the Marvel fans are not even Marvel fans they just MCU Avengers Fan. I started watching superhero movies and animated series from 11 grade onwards….star movies is a famous channel in India which shows Disney owned properties….so naturally I was drawn to Marvel movies and animated series on Disney XD, a popular kids channel….then, I watched The Dark Knight Trilogy,DCEU movies, old Batman movies,etc on HBO, TV shows, and animated series on YouTube…so until 2019 I was a hardcore Marveller….but truth is, except for MCU, DC is better or atleast equal to Marvel in other media. I tend to lean towards marvel. I grew up watching the incredible hulk series with Lou Ferrigno. I also watched batman with Adam West. I tend to think that marvel’s charaters are more human like where as for a long time dc was more like their heros had no problems in like. Like they were perfect. Honestly, I’ve been a Marvel fan since the beginning. The comics and movies are amazing, and so are the characters. Like said, most people will recognize Spider-Man before they recognize Green Arrow. And it is also Marvel’s storyline that creates a big effect. The whole Infinity Stone thread that was mentioned, played a huge role in the last two movies. In DC, it’s mostly just a few different battles with the same villains every time (Joker, The Riddler, etc.) and it seems like each hero has their own villain that they fight every time. Like Batman has Joker, the Flash has Reverse-Flash, Green Lantern and Sinestro, you know. And they keep fighting the same guys. Unlike Marvel, where there’s Ultron, Loki, Thanos, and stuff. The bad guys even have relations on the good side–take Thor and Loki for instance. Brothers, but one is the bad one. And Thor has to live with it–the pain of fighting his own little brother. That’s another thing. Marvel heroes seem to have more realistic lives, while DC characters are practically perfect. Batman–secret undercover guy, always serious, you know. They don’t have much personality other than their superhero lives. I mean, I’m not gonna lie, the whole Batman and Robin thing was really sweet, but Robin grew up WAAAAY too fast and became a sidekick of Batman’s. Please. On the other hand, Marvel characters go through a lot of human stuff. Peter Parker is Spider-Man, but he’s also a 16-year-old kid who still sees limits because of his young age. He’s bullied at school, tries his best to keep his aunt happy while they live in a tiny apartment, and has to prove to the Avengers that he’s not a kid anymore, he can fight just like them. Tony Stark is his mentor, and their father-son relationship is adorable. It really gives the fans something to root for. Thor has to deal with the pain of fighting his little brother, as mentioned before. And–S P O I L E R S!!!–while DC never kills off its main characters, Marvel is much more realistic and actually–sob–k-killed off characters. Like really major characters, SUCH AS Iron Man, and Cap. And for real. In Batman v Superman, Batman kills Superman. But in Justice League, he comes back. Seriously! And it wasn’t even some sort of spin-off with time–they brought him back from the dead. I personally think Marvel is a lot more realistic and funnier, and even really emotional at times. Like I don’t know anyone who hasn’t cried during Iron Man’s death scene, where he sacrificed himself. Or Spider-Man, who was a sweet 15-year-old, too young, and faded away in Iron Man’s arms. And I’m not saying DC is bad–like the TV shows are sick. A lot of people would know The Flash season 6 then they would know season one of WandaVision. But still. So, cough cough, yeah. Marvel is loads better than DC. Just my opinion :o).

One of the defining elements to that movie is the lack of special effects and the real aspect of it. The fact that the batmobile was a real to life vehicle made as a military prototype for the U.S. government made headlines itself. The Dark Knight was so popular that the villain, the Joker ended up staring in his own movie. Back to the point of Spider-Man from 2002 being the rare exception not the part of the main marvel franchise. Point one is Sony owns the rights to that Spider-Man movie not marvel, which is why it took so long for Spider-Man to come into the new marvel universe. Sony was able to buy the rights to Spider-Man from marvel but not the other superheroes for the same reason Disney was able to buy marvel as a whole, marvel was going bankrupt. According to all the reports I heard from published news sources as well as the comic fans I know in person or are online marvel had two options close everything or sell to Disney because they were going bankrupt. Disney decided to buy marvel based on the success of The Dark Knight trilogy which lead to uv shows like Gotham but also cartoons and video games. So the modern marvel movies only exist because Disney is a multi billion dollar company and bought the rights.

Last point DC had its own streaming service with DC Universe which is shutting down in 2021 and becoming part of hbo max because AT&T bought out Time Warner. Marvel never had its own streaming service the new films are part of Disney’s streaming service but I don’t know if it includes any of the title that Disney didn’t make. Marvel seems to right the coat tales of DC, and DC seems largely driven by Batman or characters originally from the Batman comics to the point he has a small part in the Wonder Woman movie.

This was a poorly constructed debate on both sides. Most of these discussions revolve around movies, which shows that most people dont understand the history of these characters from either franchise.

But it speaks more against Marvel, because movies is all that theyve done “well”. Both Marvel & DC are multimedia franchises. “Multi”, meaning more than one medium. However, movies are the only medium that Marvel has done “well” in. Even if you think DC has lagged in the movie department, no one can deny that DC dominates love action TV, animation, & video games.

Meanwhile, Marvel has very little animated content (good or otherwise), limited TV content, & limited gaming content.

I think DC has better villans and well known heros but when it comes to special effects and green screen then MARVEL always wins. Also, since all MARVEL heros are humans so their problems are more realistic and relatable to the real world while DC has god’s that always win, MARVEL has humans with extraordinary capabilities. To be totally honest DC nailed it with Wonder Woman but if DC wants to get ahead of MARVEL then they better improve their effects, like you can easily make out that Superman actually flies through ropes that are cut out by the special effects because he rises up gently then starts flying in one direction with a straight body and arms in the front for no obvious reason, while when Captain Marvel or Iron Man flies, then they do all kinds of flips and stuff that doesn’t make it super obvious that they are using ropes.

U guys are basin it on movies. Yes the MCU have better movies than the dceu(for now with movies like wonder woman , Shazam, birds of prey, aquaman ). Marvle is obviously way better than DC. although, I will admit that the DC universe has some of the best comics ever. But, there movies are not as good. They don’t use realistic special effects. There are a few things to consider. Don’t get me wrong both cinematic universes are awesome but excel in different fields. For the MCU, it’s a universal consensus that they have awesome movies. This is considering the financial success they’ve had, continuity in storylines and good casting apparently. For the DCEU, let’s be brutally honest. They have mostly shitty movies so far(waiting to review the snyder cut) BUT the animated movies are to die for. Their comics are on point with much better characterisations and backstories than the MCU. DCEU villains have well structured storylines compared to their counterparts. And that he got his dad back AND that he still had a whole loving family, you speak like nothing in their lives ever went right, but he married the woman he loved. Much like getting trapped in ice for years, never being able to be with your one true love, but having to live everyday knowing that you saved the world but you won’t ever be truly happy. Oh! There is also BOTH of your parents being killed in a car crash, but wait! It turns out your friend’s brother actually killed them and he is a whole nother backstory. Oh and more are the X-Men. Ahhh growing up in Germany, being split from your family, having to show people your powers, having to hide your powers, when a guy is about to be crushed by heavy machinery you save his life, but opsie someone told on you, your family gets killed and you end up getting accused of murdering the president, of course the friend that you accidently paralyzed, and a guy from the future, need your help to save the world so they then break you out of prison and you find out you had a son the whole time. Lots of Marvel fans are saying that Marvel characters are more relatable and fun, this is true but I hope that in the new Flash movie it will be more upbeat, because Barry Allen is hilarious and an absolute mood. MARVEL mainly focus on light toned and funny story sides DC focus on serious story lines and MARVEL is making a video game called the avengers ( gaming fans don’t pick that game ). While Batman’s Arkham games ( gaming fans picked these because it gave more of a actual video game ( the avengers NO it’s not gonna attract the gaming fans ). DC is beating MARVEL in every aspect ( TV shows, animated movies, video games, comics ( maybe equal )). DCEU in recent years it has a few good movies ( wonder woman, aquaman, Shazam, joker ( not DCEU). I prefer realistic movies other than kid friendly movies. #DC

DC sucks. The characters are too perfect and Marvel has actual Humans as characters who are complex. Marvel has way better movies and maybe DC has better comics but movies are a lot more important these days.

may i just add this, DC may have been around for longer, but who has 5 of the top 10 box office hits of all time, Marvel, and who somehow made the most liked and most hated villain of this decade and maybe century, Marvel, and what has DC done, oh yes they mad 67 batman movies (don’t believe me, google it). Marvel is better hands down.

DC is better than Marvel because DC actually came first and many of its characters, such as Hulk, are actually copied from DC. The only thing Marvel beats DC in is movies. Other than that, DC is doing far better than Marvel. Take comics for example. I was watching a Cosmonaut Variety Hour video on the MCU movies, and he admits his comics are made mainly up of DC Comics. DC also beats Marvel in animated shows. DC has been long shining before Marvel was invented. I could also be neutral because there is also proof that the Marvel and DC rivalry is only among the fans.

Well, it depends is this debate about DC vs Marvel or DCEU vs Marvel? Personally I think DC is better if you are talking about the whole universe aka the older cartoons, the comics the whole shebang, But, I will say that the MCU has seemed more impressive when it came down to it. Although I do think that DCEU villains are more developed than MCU villains.

I grew up with DC on TV and at first only read their comics. When I started reading Marvel, too, I noticed a huge difference. The Marvel characters seemed more “human” and seemed to be more willing to show their problems in love, life, and careers. My experience with DC characters were that they were next to perfect, had no problems or concerns, and always won. Things have since changed. Now, I still lean more towards DC out of loyalty and nostalgia, but really appreciate both. My wish would be that they would merge into once company. Even if they kept them in two different worlds (such as DCs infamous/famous Earth 1 or Earth Prime), they could pool their creative skills and it would benefit everyone. Marvel could come up with some decent TV shows and DC could have some decent movies – besides just Batman and Superman. Wouldn’t you love to see a great Justice League movie that tied together several single hero movies together like the recently finished Infinity Stone Thread with Marvel?

I think Marvel wins by a landslide for many reasons. Not only have Spiderman and Hulk been popular from the 1960 s , but they seem to keep their fans cheering until their 80s. Two of Marvel´s greatest characteristics are that almost all of their comics are like puzzle pieces that all lead up to an epic battle or crossover. Time travel is also included. There are many more reasons I can list, but it would take way too long. If they were to fight, Iron man would eventually find Kryptonite and kill superman. Spiderman can web everyone up while Thor strikes them with lightning, giving Iron man enough time to call in Veronica to put them in a vibranium trap.

I rest my case!!!

I think that DC is a good Batman and Superman very famous but Marvel is a lot lot lot good and Marvel characters are just like heroes their movies are filled with thrill, action including some entertainment but DC focuses on destructions, fights but marvel created by Stanlee. it is one of the best thing I ever saw on television DC movie Batman vs Superman and Superman itself were not so famous but in the movie Iron Man, Thor The dark world and avengers infinity war and world’s biggest movie avengers endgame is alot good than DC movies

When you are comparing comic giants you only take perspectives through movies. Well, say let’s take a different eye : DC heroes are Gods and Marvel’s are men with God like abilities ,Its either the actor or the human character that makes them a hit in the movies (THINK-robert downey, holland….),talking about animated films, TV series and the rest, marvel is a dumb zero.And does marvel have fans for its villains? I think marvel is better than DC because they have better and more powerful characters and their characters are easier to relate to because they go through harder issues than any DC character has ever had to go through.

DC has a much more devoloped charcters including supervillans. In Marvel sometimes they meet the bad guy and is like oh we have to kill them. In DC there super villans and super heros go way back. Also DC characters are a little more relatable because they are not bad nor good. Sure they take that to an extreme but still. For Example Batman does some questionable things that you think ‘He is supposed to be the good guy’ but he never kills on purpose. Then uou look at Jocker and yes he is super insane but he has reasons why that almost reminds you that he is human not a mad man with no feelings. I can admit the DC’s movies are too dark but at least there characters are not goody two shoes jumping around with a hammer or shield fighting a guy who is purple.

I think marvel and dc are both working differently. Marvel keeps its tone light with some jokes while dc keeps its tone a bit dark with a more realistic approach.They both have grown differently, marvel growed more while dc is trying its best to take over marvel.

If dceu wants to take over mcu then it has give great movies like wonder woman in future and it also needs to work upon its dark tone in its movies. People Who Prefer DC Comics Over Marvel Explain Their Reasoning

It's one of the biggest and oldest rivalries in pop culture fandom: DC vs. Marvel. Who would win? For decades, the comic book industry has been dominated by the "Big Two." In terms of history, DC might have a slight edge as the first comic company on the scene . The publisher was founded as National Allied Publications in 1934 and can also claim to have kickstarted the entire superhero genre with the publication of Action Comics  #1 in 1938, featuring the debut appearance of Superman. The precursor to Marvel Comics, Timely Comics, released  Marvel Comics  #1 a year later featuring Sub-Mariner and the first version of the Human Torch.

The two companies have enjoyed a friendly but highly competitive rivalry ever since, with similar Marvel and DC comic events  and analogous Marvel and DC superheroes  inspiring fan debate. Since 2008, the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has lead many to claim that Marvel has left its long-time competitor in the dust. But, does cinematic achievement translate to better comics? These comic book fans don't think so, and have taken to Reddit to explain why they still prefer DC to Marvel.

DC And Marvel Characters Are Equally Over-Powered (Despite Arguments To The Contrary)

Captain America and Superman are often compared, so here is my question: what is more relatable, being a secret Nazi agent who wants to take over the world or taking your wife and son to the county fair? Assassinating someone who looks up to you or trying to protect your young son from how horrible the real world can be?

Marvel also has characters like The Silver Surfer, Hyperion, Sentry etc. They are just as over-powered as any DC character.

Ultimately all superheroes are unbelievable. In real life, getting bitten by a radioactive spider would probably give you bone cancer. I like DC more because I think the stories are better. I really like the idea of a lot of Marvel characters but the comics never quite measure up.

Final bit, and this is purely personal opinion and is in no way representative of every Marvel fan, but the Marvel fanbase has always felt far, far more toxic to me and the difference has only increased with the massive movie success. Being insulted because I liked DC at all (despite still liking Marvel) is not an experience I'm proud or fond of. Being less enthused about Marvel's product due to the community (both on and off line) spoils the enjoyment of the product a bit since I'd feel punished or repressed in trying to communicate with Marvel fans.

DC Takes Care Of Their Own Better
