The premise of LGM is my most favourite—and sadly, my only favourite—part of the film. It’s about a young woman, Meera (Ivana), deciding that she can’t marry her two-year boyfriend, Gowtham (Harish Kalyan), unless she knows for sure that she will get along with his mother (Nadiya). And to this end, she has “an idea” , a dialogue repeated multiple times in the film to no great effect. She suggests that both families go on a trip together, so she can gauge her compatibility with her future mother-in-law. This premise is rooted in the topics of patriarchy and sexism—and has the potential to speak of how women are expected to naturally adjust to living not just with the person they are in love with, but those attached to him as well—and how this ‘tolerance’ is expected only of women. It’s an idea that has the potential to speak of family bonds, of the utility of new relationships, of how society tramples the individuality of women… However, over 150 minutes, all LGM tramples is its only good aspect: The promising premise.

And it sets about this with cold precision, through many efficient ways. Its aim at being a comedy is more laughable than its humour—and the desperate attempts, in fact, serve to undercut the importance of its premise. There’s a scene on the terrace in which Meera tells Gowtham that she never imagined living with anyone else except him and how the idea of his mother living with them causes her great discomfort. It’s a sensitive plea, but the performances and the dialogue-writing don’t help. Worse is when the film sneaks in a silly joke as a continuation of this scene, almost like it doesn’t take Meera too seriously. At one point, I wondered whether the film even understood Meera’s problem, or whether her concern was just a ‘cool premise’. Gowtham’s friend (Mirchi Vijay) doesn’t think much of her. Gowtham’s boss (Venkat Prabhu) doesn’t seem to get the issue either. Later, Yogi Babu—in between some reasonably funny jokes—keeps vilifying both Meera and her prospective mother-in-law (Nadiya). Gowtham himself acts like a victim, as the classic innocent man torn between two women—when he is the person, of the three, whose life is altered the least.
The premise needed more sensitive eyes and way more emotional insight—and the film has neither. It presents the loneliness of Gowtham’s mother but doesn’t care enough to tell us more. It reminds us that her husband died early and that Gowtham and Meera strangely use it as a diss, but none of this is followed up with any real catharsis. As for Meera’s own ‘ideas’, the film seems to have judged them as strange —and so, what it proceeds to do is build on this and move to stranger ideas. How else can you explain the bizarreness of both women (Meera and mother-in-law) tripping on drugged sweets at a strange ashram populated by white people speaking a strange language? Or both women getting kidnapped by poachers and getting chained to a cage with a tiger? How do these ideas even fit into the emotional idea of two women learning to love each other?
The film begins with the sensations of a rom-com, but soon, turns into something resembling a road-trip film. But soon again, the women get isolated, and it begins to seem like this is a film about these women and how they find themselves while searching for each other. But then, soon, they are dancing around drugged and needing to be saved by a man (Yogi Babu), who calls them the bane of his life. Ultimately, this is a nothing film, lacking any real interest in itself.
After a while, I signed out mentally, waiting like the tiger, to be released from my suffering. I merely stared, enduring the film’s hodge-podge of nonsensical, mirthless ideas. I stared as Ivana and Nadiya wake up, looking fairly well made-up, after supposedly being unconscious in a forest for an entire night. I stared, as Sandy master, dressed up as a saamiyaar , dances to a psychedelic song and encourages Ivana and Nadiya to do the same. I stared as Ivana and Nadiya inadvertently drug two horses and get lost in a jungle. I stared as Yogi Babu and a tiger fly at each other, and the film presents it as some apocalyptic faceoff.
The film is produced by Dhoni Entertainment, and Yogi Babu, in his opening scene, calls attention to his photograph with MS Dhoni. He is even called Mahendra in the film. Over the years, Dhoni has saved plenty of cricket matches that seemed hopeless with his last-minute hitting—and perhaps this film hoped Yogi Babu, named Mahendra, would pull off something similar. He does try with some jokes that seem particularly efficient because he’s mocking the film’s characters at a time when we feel quite frustrated with the film. As Meera narrates a story, he encourages her to go on as “it is keeping the tiger asleep”. On another occasion, he patiently listens to a back story and brutally dubs it ‘mokkai’. But these fleeting jokes are the equivalent of a last ball six when your team is losing by an innings and a couple of hundred runs.
It seemed as if the intention behind the film was not to explore the dynamics of a new relationship, or the changing landscape of family post-marriage. LGM used this as a gateway to come up with something that is spectacularly stupefying nonsense
Rating: 1.5 Director: Ramesh Tamilmani Cast: Harish Kalyan, Ivana, Nadiya Moidu
It all starts with one great idea followed by another. What ensues later in LGM is chaos and mostly nonsensical comedy. When you ponder a bit harder though, you wonder — nonsense or fun? The answer depends on how flimsy a plot you think is acceptable. Meera (Ivana) is someone who is struck with the most unusual ideas when it comes to taking decisions in her life. First, she wants to mandate a trial period for her relationship with Gautham. When she begins to develop a sense of security and is confident in their relationship, she wants to take things forward, but again, she doesn’t want to move in with a mother-in-law she has no idea about. There strikes the second idea — a trip where she can get to know her mother-in-law Leela.
Societal construct suggests that this is a preposterous idea. This is also why Gautham and Meera initially decide to break up instead of even contemplating a solution to her problem. However, it is love for one another that pushes the two of them to give something atypical a chance. There is drama, misunderstanding, frustration and a lot of pent up emotions that boil to the surface in the course of the film, and each a valid point of view from the three main characters — Gautham, his mother Leela and Meera. Everything so far is solid, but where things get tangled is when the filmmaker attempts to resolve the conflict. Everything after this point in the film is something that one would either end up hating, or laughing uncontrollably over. It is harebrained enough to frustrate you, but the underlying flimsiness is what really catapults the film into the category of “so bad, but why is it good? Why am I laughing?”
There comes a point in the film where I began to wonder if this flimsiness in the film is intentional, or an oversight. There is no way that a filmmaker would include a song that is incomprehensible, in a film which already spells chaos and commotion. It seemed as if the intention behind the film was not to explore the dynamics of a new relationship, or the changing landscape of family post-marriage. LGM used this as a gateway to come up with something that is spectacularly stupefying nonsense. I couldn’t help but laugh even after I left the theaters, and this is despite understanding that the film was just not good. So at which point did I not want to go along on this nonsensical ride? When the filmmaker decided to get overtly indulgent with the humor that he missed on some very important plot details.
Take the conversation that Meera and Leela have about Gautham, when Meera recalls how he asked her out, she makes it seem unimportant. Say it was to aid the tone of the film, but then what of the bond between Leela and Meera. Over days the two of them drive around Goa, go to places, stay together and do various things. Yet, we never see a bond build between them. Not enough to qualify the climax of the film, at least. Then, there is the dynamics of relationships between the three characters which are never explored to fruition. Even if one were to put all of this aside, LGM just doesn’t get the balance between story arc and humour right. So the film succumbs to this careless choice leaving yet another great idea to rot in storytelling grave.
After all, how many film can we expect to see in which two women decide to understand each other outside of the constructs set by society at large?

Indian cricketer MS Dhoni’s maiden production, LGM – Let’s Get Married, stars Harish Kalyan and Ivana as the main characters. The movie hit the screens today in Telugu states. Let’s dive into our review to see how the movie is.
After dating for two years, Gautam (Harish Kalyan) and Meera (Ivana) decide to get married. But Meera worries that life with her future mother-in-law Leela (Nadiya) might be tough. So, she asks Gautam to plan a trip to Coorg with their families, hoping to bond with her aunt. The trip doesn’t start well, and Gautam gets stuck in the middle of this chaos. Eventually, Meera comes up with another idea to fix the problem. What’s her plan? Did they get closer? Did Gautam and Meera marry? To find out, you’ll have to watch the main movie.
Plus Points:
The story is simple and sweet. The idea of checking if you’re compatible with your partner for a happy life isn’t new, but doing it with future mother-in-law is unique.
Harish Kalyan, familiar to Telugu audiences with Jersey, looks good on screen. His role as someone torn between his mom and girlfriend is impressive and funny. Ivana, who impressed us in Love Today, is back with another interesting character. As Meera, a bold and modern girl, Ivana acts well and brings some laughs.
Nadiya’s role is good, and she plays it subtly. Yogi Babu brings laughs with his funny lines whenever he’s on screen. Mirchi Vijay, Harish Kalyan’s sidekick, also adds to the humor. The dubbing is excellent, making it feel like a proper Telugu movie.
Minus Points:
The story might have seemed exciting on paper, but it’s not that engaging on screen. The writers, Sakshi Dhoni and Ramesh Tamilmani could have added more interesting scenes between the lead female characters. More compelling interactions between Nadiya and Ivana would have made things better.
The director, Ramesh Tamilmani, also should have focused on the pacing, which is a tad slow. The story drags, with unnecessary scenes in both halves that slow down things.
Harish’s acting is decent, but he could have emoted better in some crucial scenes. The drama between the lead pair is the most crucial aspect of a rom-com, but this hasn’t been handled well.
Yogi Babu and Deepa Kumari’s characters were not utilized to the fullest extent. The songs are forgettable once you leave the theater. The climax and some scenes in both halves could have had some impact, but the presentation didn’t let that happen. Plus, some characters don’t really contribute to the story.
Technical Aspects:
As a writer and director, Ramesh Tamilmani didn’t make a strong impact. With a better story and tighter script, the movie could have been a more entertaining romantic comedy.
The camera work is decent, but the shots of Goa and Coorg by DOP Odukkathil Viswajith could have been still better to make the movie visually more appealing. The music by Ramesh Tamilmani lacks the spark. Editor Pradeep E Ragav is just okay. Production values are okay.
On the whole, LGM – Let’s Get Married is a somewhat incomplete rom-com with a good story, decent performances, and occasional humor. However, the slow pace and lengthy scenes in both halves might cause boredom. If that doesn’t bother you, you could watch it over the weekend, but keep your expectations in check. The film might appeal more to OTT audiences well.

Ever since the announcement pertaining to LGM was made, the expectations have been pretty bigger. All credit goes to the brand ‘MS Dhoni’, who embarks on his production venture in Tamil industry through this film, featuring Harish Kalyan, Ivana and Nadhiya in the lead roles. The film’s visual promos clearly indicated that it’s going to be a feel-good family entertainer, directed by Ramesh Thamil Mani.
So what’s the film all about?
The film is about a handsome boy (Harish Kalyan), who falls in love with his colleague (Ivana), working in his IT firm office. They decide to get hitched after 2 years of relationship, and that’s when Ivana wants to spend some quality time with his future mother-in-law (Nadhiya) to see how’s the chemistry between them. The protagonist plans a trip involving both families, but on the spur of the moment, his mother discovers the real intention. Sooner, both his mother and fiancé embark on a journey that is laced with fun, twists, and surprises.
To start off with the analysis, the film has potential and elements that would easily work out with audiences but unfortunately fails to impress them with the feeble screenplay. The film’s writing looks so plain, and there are no impressive scenes, anywhere, except for a twist in the interval.
When it comes to performances, Harish Kalyan looks so dull and vague throughout the movie, and doesn’t fit his character anywhere. It’s same with Ivana, who keeps delivering same expressions over and again, throughout the film. It’s same with Nadhiya, who looks so dull and pale throughout the film. The mother-son chemistry between Harish and Nadhiya is completely missing. Especially, her portions during the second half aren’t engaging either. It looks like Yogi Babu’s character is purposely forced into the script. His presence doesn’t add any value to the film. He appears, disappears, and reappears for no reason. The only convincing part of the film is the performance by actor RJ Vijay.
On the technical front, the film’s music by director Ramesh Thamil Mani is somewhat ok, but it doesn’t synch well with the narrative, which again is weak. The cinematography looks over bleached.
Overall, LGM somewhat engrosses till the point of interval, but the post-intermission sequences are too sluggish with directionless screenwriting.
Verdict: A film that had potential to work out well, but eventually disappoints

A boyfriend (Harish Kalyan), girlfriend (Ivana) and mother-in-law (Nadhiya) set out on a road trip to ease tensions. This one-liner would get one to expect a dysfunctional family drama. Or a super fresh situational comedy. Ramesh Thamilmani’s LGM (Let’s Get Married) is neither.
Gowtham and Meera’s two-year-long romance comes with a footnote. They are colleagues who begin enjoying each other’s company after a meet-cute at a watering hole. But Meera has an idea. “What if we hang out for two years before we see where this goes?”
We get glimpses of what the film could’ve been in a couple of scenes. Leela is a single mom, whose worries and wonders revolve around her only son Gowtham. But the film doesn’t pause and show us ‘here’s why they are inseparable’.
We realise that Gowtham holds his cards quite close to his chest early on in the film. Perhaps the effect of experiencing loss early in life? We will never know. But as a result, the jokes — when they aren’t filled with deeply unsettling, misogynistic undertones —- fall awfully flat on paper.
The energy is also absurdly low for a film with such a riotous concept. So, when the film takes a head-on plunge into a mind-numbing madcap zone (we’re talking computer-generated tigers, horses drugged with spiked jalebis and an incredibly cringe Godman speaking gibberish), LGM doesn’t have any ounce of energy to even own the kind of arbitrary fluff it throws at us.
Nadhiya is such a calming presence even in the middle of LGM ’s chaotic self-destructive streaks. “Do you like being alone,” Ivana asks her at one point. She shakes her head and admits that it’s the most difficult thing in the world, looking deep into the sea with a smile.

Those who watched the film in special media premiere last night shared their opinion on social media. One of them said, "Being the first film produced by cricketer Dhoni, LGM was highly anticipated. Fans are expressing their opinion that MS Dhoni should use his captaincy skills to form a good team for listening the scripts so that he can win big at Kollywood next time.
Rj vijay and yogi babu offer some comics in this otherwise middling affair. below goes our lgm (let's get married) movie review..
MS Dhoni’s debut film production in LGM hits the screens today, and the film is promoted as a freewheeling family entertainer for all sections of the audiences. Does Dhoni start off his film career with a sixer? Let’s see!
LGM (Let’s Get Married) starts off as a story where a man hangs between his girlfriend and wife, on the road to marriage. As his girlfriend suggests the idea of going on a family trip before the wedding to get along with each other, the idea gets into being and what happens between the girl and the to-be mother-in-law forms the crux of the story. LGM begins with fun and frolic, as there are quite a few good jokes in the first half, which keep the audience laughing. The second half is where the film actually gets stuck in a hole, as there are three episodes – The Goan bar episode, the encounter with the cult and finally the tiger scene, none of these three work out as well as one would expect and the film falls on its nose here. LGM suffers from pacing issues as well along with the lack of good songs, and the only saviours are its two comedy dwellers – RJ Vijay and Yogi Babu.
Harish Kalyan has a stylish presence but the film hardly makes use of it, and he has almost nothing to do here throughout. Ivana does not fit into the role of the elite girl, and looks too young onscreen too. Nadhiya is the saving grace amidst the cast, and she does a good job. The supporting cast has good contributions but none of them have the weight to withhold the film on the whole.
LGM has decent technicalities, but the film could have done even better by opting for a proper music director who would have given it better songs. Music is of utmost importance in such a film, and the fact that LGM falters there is admitable.
On the whole, LGM is a film that could have been better in many ways, and it is one that needed better writing and making to entertain audiences for its 2 hour and 30 minute runtime.

Back in January, Jason Statham starred in the action thriller “The Beekeeper” as a former special-ops assassin who seeks revenge on a group of people targeting the elderly in phone scams. But in Josh Margolin’s directorial debut, “Thelma,” it’s the elderly themselves who fight back against the phone scammers. Ninety-three-year-old grandmother Thelma ( June Squibb ) doesn’t need no stinkin’ Jason Statham. All she needs is a ride.
Set over the course of one day, “Thelma” is a love letter to tough grandmas and Tom Cruise, and a celebration of California’s San Fernando Valley, from Encino to Van Nuys. And while “Thelma” is notable for being the very first lead film role for the now-94-year-old Squibb, who has been performing for more than six decades, the film is also a calling card for writer-director-editor Margolin, who demonstrates his skill with screen style and suspense in this high-stakes dramedy.
Margolin does a lot with a little in “Thelma,” which is inspired by his own relationship with his grandmother, also named Thelma. While the setting may be humble, Margolin captures the unlikely beauty of the Valley, and injects thrilling suspense into this yarn, one that transforms quotidian dramas — like making an unprotected left turn, or closing pop-up ads on a webpage — into nail-biting action sequences.
Since her Oscar-nominated turn in 2013’s ‘Nebraska,’ the stage and screen veteran has kept busy. Her latest, an action-comedy, captivated audiences at Sundance.
June 18, 2024
His surrogate in “Thelma” is Daniel (Fred Hechinger), a 24-year-old sensitive ne’er-do-well whose best friend is his grandmother Thelma. They spend time in her comfortable home, which is haunted by the absence of her recently deceased husband. Together, they watch “Mission: Impossible” movies, Daniel helping Thelma with her computer and fretting over her safety. When Thelma receives a frantic call with the news that Daniel’s been in an accident and she needs to send $10,000 in cash, she doesn’t hesitate to book over to the Encino post office to drop the money in the mailbox.
It’s when she finds out she’s been the victim of a scam that the plot kicks into gear. With Daniel safe and unharmed, the police aren’t much help, and her family (Parker Posey as her daughter, Clark Gregg as her son-in-law) throw up their hands in defeat. But Thelma isn’t about to take this lying down. She will, however, take it sitting down, behind the wheel of a two-seater scooter she “borrows” from an old friend, Ben ( Richard Roundtree , in his final role), whom she visits at an assisted living home. The two set off on an odyssey to retrieve Thelma’s cash, while Thelma’s family worries about her whereabouts.
Their journey takes them to some unlikely places, specifically an antique lamp shop manned by a menacing Malcolm McDowell, as well as to some unexpected realizations, about accepting that it’s OK to ask for help, but that independence is a rare, complicated gift to those who are later in life. It’s refreshing to see a film where someone in their 90s is able to have new revelations and learning experiences, retaining the capacity to surprise themselves and others.
Squibb is a delightful presence, capably handling the humor and the heart of the story, and demonstrating true grit too, while the late, great Roundtree offers a warm, steadying presence. Posey and Gregg bring the comedic elements as the frazzled parents of Daniel, while Hechinger is charmingly stressed about losing his grandma and trying to figure out what he’s going to do with his life.
The cast is fantastic, but it’s the cinematic style that makes “Thelma” a proper big-screen movie experience. Nick Chuba’s percussive score brings a jazzy beat that’s “Ocean’s 11” by way of “Mission: Impossible,” and David Bolen’s cinematography is richly saturated with color and creative practical lighting. Margolin’s inspired direction elevates “Thelma,” imbuing each moment with a thoughtful eye toward craft.
“Elderly female action star” is a cute premise, but Margolin makes the most of it without infantilizing his heroine or otherwise resorting to lowest common denominator humor. Instead, he delivers a film that suggests there’s always an opportunity to experience something new in life, from the smallest observations to the most dramatic showdowns.
The most important lesson of all? Underestimate a determined older woman at your own risk.

"Eanku oru idea (I have an idea)," is something Meera (Ivana) keeps repeating in LGM aka Let's Get Married to make her relationship with Gautham (Harish Kalyan) work. That's a common strand between Meera and the debut film of Ramesh Thamilmani — both of them just have ideas, which don't come to fruition.

Cast: Harish Kalyan, Ivana, Nadiya, Mirchi Vijay, Yogi Babu. Rating: 1.5/5. And it sets about this with cold precision, through many efficient ways. Its aim at being a comedy is more laughable than its humour—and the desperate attempts, in fact, serve to undercut the importance of its premise. There's a scene on the terrace in which Meera ...
LGM used this as a gateway to come up with something that is spectacularly stupefying nonsense. Rating: 1.5 Director: Ramesh Tamilmani Cast: Harish Kalyan, Ivana, Nadiya Moidu. It all starts with one great idea followed by another. What ensues later in LGM is chaos and mostly nonsensical comedy.

Cringe meets absurd . The energy is also absurdly low for a film with such a riotous concept. So, when the film takes a head-on plunge into a mind-numbing madcap zone (we're talking computer-generated tigers, horses drugged with spiked jalebis and an incredibly cringe Godman speaking gibberish), LGM doesn't have any ounce of energy to even own the kind of arbitrary fluff it throws at us.
LGM Twitter Review: Dhoni, who has won many trophies for the Indian cricket team, has taken a new avatar as a film producer. LGM, his first production, has hit the theaters today.
LGM suffers from pacing issues as well along with the lack of good songs, and the only saviours are its two comedy dwellers - RJ Vijay and Yogi Babu. Harish Kalyan has a stylish presence but the film hardly makes use of it, and he has almost nothing to do here throughout. Ivana does not fit into the role of the elite girl, and looks too young ...
