Despite the break from regular classes, students often face a new challenge during vacations: hefty homework and projects. But what drives teachers to assign such rigorous tasks, and why do parents prefer 'homework bazaar' to get them done? Watch the video to find out.
As kids head back to school, they also head back to an array of after school extracurriculars — whether that’s a sport, instrument, or hours’ worth of homework (often, all three). So, as another busy school year begins, Sean and Rachel are here to remind parents that, though extracurricular activities can teach kids valuable lessons, they shouldn’t become your child’s (or family’s) entire world.
To dig deeper into the topic, the Duffys revisit their conversation with the author of Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be and father of six, Timothy Carney .

Short answer is yes. But Little League refers to this situation as a "run rule" instead and here's how it, according to Little League.
RUN RULE: If at the end of three (3) innings [Intermediate (50-70) Division/Junior/Senior League: four innings], two and one-half innings [Intermediate (50-70) Division/Junior/Senior League: three and one-half innings] if the home team is ahead, one team has a lead of fifteen (15) runs or more, the manager of the team with the least runs shall concede the victory to the opponent. If at the end of a regulation game one team has a lead of ten (10) runs or more, the manager of the team with the least runs shall concede the victory to the opponent.
NOTE: If the visiting team has a lead of fifteen (15) or ten (10) or more runs respectively, the home team must bat in its half of the inning.

I might not have cats, but i am childless by choice. that doesn’t make me selfish or shortsighted..
The first time I was called selfish for not having children, I’d flown 2,500 miles to see my cousin in California. We went out for dim sum and were sitting at a small table filled with moo shu and dumplings.
A chopstick in one hand, she casually said she’d been thinking: She had two kids and I had none. How obvious it was that “your world revolves around you,” she said.
I looked at her quizzically.
“What do you mean?”
She popped a dumpling in her mouth and chewed. I waited. “You and Bob, you have so little to worry about without kids.”
I pushed some pork around on my plate: My mother’s unexpected death at 64. Bob losing his job. My breast cancer.
“I mean,” she continued, “my son won’t talk to me and I never get to see his kids, and my daughter moved hundreds of miles away — and still, still , after how their father treated me through the divorce, they worship him.”
“You went through a lot.”
“I did!” I saw her eyes well up. I reached across the table, attempting to pat her arm, but she had grabbed her napkin and was dabbing her eyes. “And the fact is that if you haven’t had kids of your own, you just don’t get it.”
I didn’t say anything or run out of the restaurant and take the next flight back to Boston. She wasn’t being intentionally cruel.
She was my older cousin. She had breast cancer before I did. She had made me laugh on the phone when I called her in terror. “Don’t worry about death,” she’d said. “Worry about your hair falling out.”
But something clicked. I realized not only that bearing children was a guaranteed badge of sacrifice but that she’d bought into an ethos permeating American culture: A woman’s contribution to the world must highlight biological motherhood.
I straightened my wig and dug into a dumpling.
In 2023, an estimated 38 percent of American adults did not have biological children, according to a Globe analysis of data from the US Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation. That’s about 101 million people nationwide, and roughly 46 million of them are women. A 2023 Pew Research survey found that nearly half of Americans between the ages of 18 and 49 said they were unlikely to ever have kids. Yet women, especially, still feel pressure to have children, even if they don’t want them: The same survey found that 42 percent of women older than 50 had experienced such pressure at some point in their lives.
I chose not to have kids. When Bob and I married, we each were close to 40 years old — so we read books about the pros and cons of having a family late in life and talked it through. We decided we were financially stable, even solvent enough to give some support to his mother, and established enough in our careers to be better contributors to the world through our work than through raising our own children.
We decided that we wanted a life dedicated to service and helping to change the world, as broken as it’s been. Even though I had had two kittens in California, we didn’t get cats. Bob is so allergic that it would have taken way too many allergy shots to get him through. But we did think a lot about how to be nurturing to each other, to our families, and to the many who exist on the fringes of society. I dedicated myself to teaching and directing plays in a women’s prison, writing books, and teaching classes to women on probation and to students at Middlesex Community College.
Instead of choosing to have kids, I’ve nurtured other people’s kids. “It takes a village to raise a child,” says the African proverb, and I am part of the village.
Almost weekly, some student tells me how I’ve changed their life; my nieces and nephew come to visit or call, just because — their joys and problems are as important to me as my own. Their children are a part of my life. Selflessness is learned in many ways.
Choosing not to have kids allowed me more time to write seven books, the newest being “Motherlove ,” a book of short stories about the mothers of teens who’ve killed other teens, stories gleaned and fictionalized from my more than 30 years of examining the criminal legal system. Those stories poured out of me, teaching me about my ability to embody those women — those mothers — each who feels guilt and shame at her child’s crime, and each who loves their child unconditionally.
You don’t have to be a biological mother to write about mothers any more than you have to be a mother to feel motherly or have a stake in what happens to the earth.
The mothers in my book are all lonely with their kids locked up. But they fight to find a place in the world. One of my fictional characters, Marie (who is based on a woman I met at a parole hearing), stands up in the middle of a hearing and asks forgiveness for her son’s crime from the mother of the boy her son killed. It is a moment of transformation for Marie, and it was a moment of transformation for me as I wrote her.
It takes incredible courage to be a mother, I wish I had said to my cousin, but it also takes courage to not bear children and instead to try to leave one’s mark on the children other people bear, and change the world, one word at a time.
Jean Trounstine is author of the books ”Shakespeare Behind Bars” and “Boy With a Knife,” a professor of humanities at Middlesex Community College, and a social justice activist. “Motherlove,” her short story collection, was published by Concord Free Press in March.

The homework struggle is real for all kids and for a variety of reasons. Kids who have ADHD may have an even harder time settling in, staying focused, and getting the work done.
