Educational Consultant Jobs: Transitioning Out of the Classroom

TeacherCareerCoach

Educational consultant jobs are a great fit for teachers transitioning out of the classroom. One of the most common questions I get asked is “what is educational consulting?” This blog will help you understand what you need to know and some next steps to help you if this is a path you are interested in.

If you need help leaving the classroom, check out the  Teacher Career Coach Course .  This step-by-step guide has helped thousands with a transition from teaching. Save time and get support with every step of picking a new path, rewriting your resume, and answering tricky interview questions.

If you are a teacher looking for a career outside of the classroom but still want to remain in education, one successful career path is becoming an educational consultant. Teachers often flourish in these positions because the work needed combines their teaching skills, administrative skills, and presentation skills. Educational consultants do a wide range of duties, sometimes providing qualitative advice on policies and procedures for companies. Some educational consultant jobs are similar to the duties of a professional development training position, training schools and districts. Educational consultant jobs, simply put, are looking for experts in education and job duties will vary depending on who the employer is.

Educational Consultant Jobs: I s this the right career for you?

A large majority of educational consultants work as freelancers. They reach out to school districts on their own and book training opportunities. They charge for full day PD packages or an hourly rate to help with onboarding new teachers, etc. Schools have an available amount of funding that they can use for this type of work.

There are companies that hire teachers specifically as educational consultants to train on specific trainings for districts. They will hire the top candidates to conduct PD (and often allow current teachers to do this as a lucrative side-gig) and fly them around the country to host trainings.

When working as an educational consultant freelancer, you don’t have to only work as a professional development trainer for districts. There are also educational consultant jobs within education companies. But you’ll need to have everything in place in order to start approaching companies as a freelancer. Click here if you want to learn more about freelancing for teachers .

An educational consultant’s job is to provide guidance on curriculum, resources, and teaching styles. Educational consultants make decisions and improvements in school systems, corporations, and home-based settings as well. An educational consultant job may be a full time career change or a part-time or freelance deal to start. This, of course, will depend on your personal goals – long and short term.

Skills for Success

First, teachers with an eye the big picture and finding innovative ways to solve problems have an aptitude for many of the skills needed for educational consultant jobs. You’ll want to showcase your subject-matter expertise with pedagogy and best practices.

The suggested skills and certifications for educational consultant jobs include: competence in researching, reporting, and analyzing data; experience or aptitude monitoring teachers to offer constructive suggestions; and knowledge of state and local rules regarding curriculum requirements.

You’ll want to create high quality presentations in order to deliver the information to clients or school districts. You can create a branded look by using a free program like Canva.

What career outside the classroom is right for YOU? Free Quiz

A Key Skill For Success: Networking

Networking is also important, especially for educational consultants who are working in a freelancing capacity. You’ll want to stay in with others who have ins at companies or districts they may be able to refer your services to. You’ll also want to attend conferences to meet others in your field.

If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, then an independent educational consultant job, where you are hired by parents or schools, is an option. It can give you the freedom to set your own schedule and work in any area you choose. This will take quite a bit of research and networking to get started. But, once you build a robust set of contacts to rely on, you’ll find plenty of opportunities.

Do Your Research

While you are on the job search the internet is a useful and valuable tool, especially Google. You can start by searching for educational companies or school districts near you. This should provide you with a helpful list of companies and school districts that are already looking for consultants. You will be surprised at how many companies are in need of a person with the skills of a teacher.

You can research other educational consultants to see what types of packages they are offering to help you prepare your own.

Where to Find Educational Consultant Jobs

Online job boards, such as LinkedIn , Glassdoor and Indeed , will also help to find open educational consultant jobs. Plus, you can use these sites to find additional information and reviews on topics. Such as: growth potential, employee profiles, promotions after 10 years, etc. This will help you decide if a company is a good fit and worth pursuing.

What to Look for in a Company

Educational consultants are in demand in companies large and small, and there are pros and cons to both.

Larger companies have more name recognition, stability, organizational impact, but are harder to move up the corporate ladder. They will often have more hiring power so educational consultant positions may be more available at a larger education company.

Smaller companies are more flexible with job openings and growth potential variety. Employees will also be able to take advantage of opportunities to take on multiple roles and learn new skills. But a smaller company is less stable, especially if it is a start-up. Educational consultant jobs here may end up becoming much more long-term.

Here’s a helpful tip:

If you love the idea of working for yourself, sign up f or educational conferences as a speaker and pick a subject you are passionate about teaching. This is a great networking opportunity where you can meet companies or districts that may hire you. Meet people in your community with connections and contacts that may prove to be useful while building your client base and offer to do the same presentation at their school or district.

Be Willing to Take a Chance

Finally, I’ll share a story about how I got into educational consulting – by taking a chance. After I’d left the classroom, I stumbled across an educational consulting job with a software company. This job opening was amazing because I am passionate about technology in education.

The job was training teachers on how to effectively implement technology in the classroom. My classroom experience gave me a huge advantage over the other applicants. This educational consultant job had amazing perks. “ But what’s the catch ? ? ” I thought.

I’ve created a Teacher Career Coach podcast episode where I talk about my role as an educational consultant .

When opportunity knocks, don’t be afraid to answer the door. Transitioning out of the classroom is a big step. It can be overwhelmingly scary to leave a career that you once thought would bring you to retirement. But taking that step into an educational consultant job or any ot her career outside the classroom could impact your life in ways you never imagined.

Help for soon-to-be Former Teachers

This is proof positive that there are plenty of opportunities out there. Companies are looking for the talent and the skills teachers specialize in, including jobs as an educational consultant in particular.

If the classroom is no longer your cup of tea, there are plenty of opportunities and resources available to you. You can find the right job to match your skills, just like I did. Because of this, I created a course to help walk teachers through transitioning out of the classroom. The Teacher Career Coach Course has helped thousands of teachers transition out of the classroom.

This complete course will walk you through all the steps to transitioning out of the classroom. For example: identifying the positions you are the most qualified for, writing your resume, network with the right people to get your foot in the door, answer tricky interview questions, and more! We’ve helped thousands of teachers begin their transition. Are you ready?

Quitting Teaching? Here's How to Become an Educational Consultant!

S o you’ve had enough of the wild and exhausting world of teaching. Maybe you’re trying to figure out what else you can do that’s “education adjacent.” Well, buckle up – we’re about to embark on a journey through the thrilling world of educational consulting.

I’m going to teach you HOW to become an educational consultant.

Being an educational consultant is great! You get paid more and, quite frankly, for doing less too!

Think of it like being a guru of teaching, except with less spiritual stuff and way more professional development.

Why would you want to be an educational consultant? Well, if you’re quitting teaching, then it’s a very easy and very transferrable pivot. (With a slim chance of still influencing the teaching profession in a positive way.)

So, get ready to dive into the world of education, where the only limit is your sarcasm. (Because not everyone understands a good joke – trust me.)

Here’s exactly how you can become an educational consultant.

What is an Educational Consultant?

Picture this: you’re some kind of British detective of the classroom, solving mysteries like why little Timmy can’t seem to understand fractions or why that kid over there won’t stop licking the desk.

As an educational consultant, you’re basically the Dumbledore of the education world, waving your wand (or PowerPoint clicker) to make all the educational problems disappear. Impossible, right? Well, probably.

But you were expected to do the same thing as a classroom teacher, along with countless other responsibilities you’re being micromanaged on by the administration. So you might as well whittle it down to one role!

In terms of the actual services an educational consultant provides, it’s a strong mix of advisement, strategization, analysis, and coaching, alongside developing and implementing resources to better support students.

Educational consultants maintain a number of duties and responsibilities, including:

  • Conducting interviews and tests to identify the strengths of students
  • Supporting students in developing various core skills
  • Creating plans for academic goals and future careers
  • Advising educational institutions on materials and staffing
  • Analyzing curricula, learning data, and faculty performance in order to hit key targets
  • Collaborating with teachers, parents, and caregivers to enhance student success
  • Coaching various educators to support individual and organizational teaching outcomes

And, well, I mean, let’s be real… How much of that are you already doing as a teacher?

See! If you’re weighing up leaving the profession and wondering what other jobs a teacher can do , becoming an educational consultant might be precisely what you need to do.

So the next question is… how do you action that?

Get the Books That Started It All

Before the blog, the podcast, the merch store… there were the best-selling books.

If you like the content on this site, then you’ll LOVE the Teacher Misery books. They’re jam-packed with teaching insanity, ridiculous true stories, and all the commiseration about the profession you’ve come to know, adore, and respect.

7 Steps to Becoming an Educational Consultant

Ready to make that transition?

There are a LOT of good reasons to quit teaching , but getting paid more to do less is certainly topping the list!

While you may already have a lot of the necessary skills for educational consultancy, there are still some steps you can take to really secure your chances of a fruitful and rewarding career. Starting with the most logical place…

Step 1: Gain Relevant Education and Experience

Let’s start with the basics, shall we?

If you’re looking into becoming an educational consultant, you have probably already spent a ton of time in the classroom and are just about burnt out on teaching . Obviously, you have a bachelor’s degree in something vaguely related to education and hopefully a related Master’s too.

Combine that with your experience, learn a bit about the greater sphere of learning frameworks and theories (even if it’s a bit bogus), and congratulations!

You’re officially on your way to becoming a professional know-it-all. ;)

Step 2: Develop Specialized Skills and Knowledge

Time to dust off those analytical skills and put them to good use. After all, it’s not every day you get to analyze the latest educational trends and pretend like you know what you’re talking about. Bonus points if you can do it with a straight face!

Just google “latest trends in education” and “educational jargon 2024” and memorize a few fancy-sounding items.

Inject these terms into your interviews, cover letters, and particularly branding if you’ll be operating independently. It’s probably good to learn a bit of the theory behind them too, just to back yourself up. Get this stuff into your self-marketing and you’ll be right on your way to becoming an educational consultant.

Administrators love a bit of BS educational jargon-speech .

Step 3: Build a Professional Network

Who needs friends when you have professional connections, am I right? Most of life happens online now anyway, so why should you ever have to meet someone face-to-face ever again?

Instead, attend all the online conferences, join all the organizations, and collect LinkedIn connections like they’re Pokémon cards. The more people you know, the more likely someone will hire you to pretend you know what you’re talking about.

It’s a sad fact that the educational industry is largely run on nepotism: it’s 20% what you know and 80% who you know. So play the game, grab your suit, tie, or pencil skirt, and get out there.

Maybe print some business cards too.

Step 4: Gain Practical Experience Through Internships or Consultancy Projects

Internships aren’t just for fetching coffee and making copies anymore. Now you get to fetch coffee, make copies, and pretend you’re making a difference in the world of education, too!

Whether you’re working for a big-name consultancy firm or flying solo, remember to smile and nod like you know what they’re talking about and that you totally agree.

And as you develop experience in consultancy projects, keep every detail you can. ESPECIALLY data and metrics of improvements. A nice little portfolio of that stuff will greatly please the eggheads running the show as you become a very successful educational consultant.

Step 5: Pursue Professional Certification or Accreditation

Because nothing says “I’m a professional” like a fancy piece of paper with your name on it. Feel free to spend a small fortune on certifications that may or may not actually mean anything.

We’ve all done those AWFUL professional development days for teachers , right? Slap some of those and an overpriced certification or two on your resume, and the path to working as an educational consultant just becomes clearer and clearer.

Just remember, the knowledge isn’t a must-have to get one of these sweet gigs, but looking good on paper sure is! It’s all about the illusion of expertise, right?

Step 6: Develop a Strong Portfolio and Brand

Of all the hats you used to wear as a teacher, you’re going to need just one more: a marketing hat.

You need to show the world why they should hire you. Spruce up that portfolio with all your best work, throw in a few educational buzzwords for good measure, and voila – you’re a brand! Knowing how to become an educational consultant means knowing how to market yourself as one .

Then, all you have to do is convince people to pay you for your expertise.

Step 7: Market Yourself Effectively

Break out the megaphone, because it’s time to shout your “accomplishments” from the rooftops. Whether you’re schmoozing at conferences or shamelessly self-promoting on social media, just remember…

When it comes to educational consulting, there’s no such thing as too much bragging.

It might make you a little nauseous, but if it gets you that gig that pays $2600 a day for “observing” a class, who cares if people hate you online!

Are you passionate about education and helping others reach their goals? Maybe being an educational consultant is the right career path for you! But where do you even start? In this blog, we’ll cover the basics of how to become an educational consultant. We’ll walk you through the skills you need, the qualifications required, and where to find educational consulting jobs. Stick around, we’ve got all the info you need!

What is an Educational Consultant?

An educational consultant is a professional who lends a hand to students, parents, and teachers by guiding them through the twists and turns of the academic world. From picking out colleges and processing applications to mapping out personalized study plans, educational consultants help ensure everyone is on the right track to success.

Aside from working with individuals, they also work behind the scenes by teaming up with schools and organizations to ensure everything is running smoothly and helping them make informed decisions that can lead to better academic outcomes.

The Journey to Becoming an Educational Consultant

Let’s explore the roles and responsibilities of an educational consultant, along with the essential qualifications and skills you’ll need to succeed in this profession.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Educational Consultant

In a typical day, education consultants…

  • Work with students to identify academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Develop study skills.
  • Create personalized learning plans.
  • Helping students prepare for standardized tests.
  • Assisting with college essay writing.
  • Advising on school selection.
  • Guide parents on supporting their child’s academic journey.
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to implement effective education strategies.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

An essential aspect of learning how to become an educational consultant is to reflect on your current skills and educational background. Here’s an insight on what you’ll need to book those educational consulting jobs.

Educational and Certification Requirements

Education consultants typically have advanced degrees in education, counseling, or related fields. They often hold certifications in areas like college counseling or career development, such as the Certified Educational Planner (CEP) credential. These qualifications ensure they know their stuff when helping students and families with school decisions.

Soft Skills

You’ll also need the following skills to be an effective educational consultant:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Empathy and patience
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with clients
  • Organizational and detail-oriented mindset
  • Creative thinking to develop personalized solutions for clients

How Much Does It Cost to Become an Educational Consultant?

The cost of becoming an educational consultant varies depending on factors like:

  • Education and experience level
  • Marketing and networking expenses
  • Necessary certifications or professional development courses

Some consultants may already have a background in education, reducing the need for additional training but for those starting with no experience , consider additional costs for education, training, and certification. You’ll still need to budget for costs associated with:

  • Business start-up costs
  • Legal fees, permits, and licenses (if required)
  • Developing a website
  • Office supplies/equipment and educational materials
  • Continuous learning costs
  • Ticket fees for seminars and conferences
  • Membership fees for professional organizations

The upfront cost to become an educational consultant can vary from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars . But if you make it big, the payoff can be worth it!

7 Steps on How to Become an Educational Consultant

Now that we’ve laid the groundwork, let’s jump right into it! Here are seven steps on how to become an educational consultant.

Step 1: Assess Yourself

The first step on how to become an educational consultant is pretty simple –  pause for a moment to explore your passions and strengths. You can do this by asking yourself this simple question: Where do you find the most joy among the following:

  • Guiding students with their college applications
  • Helping them explore career options
  • Crafting personalized study plans
  • Creating educational strategies for schools and organizations

Reflecting on your experiences and interests can help you determine the type of consultant you’d like to be and where you can make the most impact.

Step 2: Learn and Train

To succeed in this line of work, you need to have a solid foundation in education—that could mean having a degree in education or something similar. If you want to go the extra mile, consider getting certified in your chosen niche or completing training in areas such as curriculum development, assessment, educational policy, program evaluation, and educational technology. This will not only help improve your skills but also increase your chances of getting educational consulting jobs.

Step 3: Get Hands-On Experience

Before diving straight into full-time educational consulting jobs, get hands-on experience by working in places like schools, tutoring centers, or non-profits. This will help you learn a lot about education and counseling, and provide you with a better understanding of what students and families need.

Step 4: Plan It Out

Of course, an important step in how to become an educational consultant is planning things out. So, make sure to create a business plan that covers the following:

  • Scope of services : What kind of help will you offer?
  • Target market : Who are your main clients?
  • Pricing : How much will you charge?
  • Marketing strategies : How will you spread the word about your business?

Also, think about setting up a timeline to reach your goals and identify any resources or support you might require. This roadmap will steer you as you establish your career as an educational consultant. And remember, don’t hesitate to tweak your plan as needed. Adapting along the way ensures you address any unexpected challenges you encounter.

Step 5: Get Covered

You never know what could happen, so it’s a smart move to have your back covered to ensure the success of your educational consulting business.

Legal Concerns

Before accepting any educational consulting jobs, make sure you handle any legal matters that might come up. That means knowing the law in your area, sticking to professional ethics, and keeping an eye out for tricky situations that could come your way.

If you’re feeling unsure about how to handle the legal side of things, teaming up with an expert who knows the ropes can be a smart move. They can help you navigate the ins and outs, from drafting contracts to staying on the right side of the law. Being proactive in this area not only protects you but also keeps your clients safe from any potential pitfalls down the road.

Education Consultant Insurance

That’s right, educational consultants need insurance too! Being an educational consultant might seem pretty straightforward, but there are hidden risks that can sneak up on you which could be detrimental to your business. For example:

  • Imagine you’re helping a student with their college applications, but they think you gave them the wrong info about admission requirements. If they sue you for negligence, professional liability insurance covers your back.
  • Or, let’s say you’re meeting a client at their place, and you accidentally break something valuable. General liability insurance pays for the damage.
  • Another situation to consider is if you have a small office and there’s a fire. Business property insurance steps in to fix or replace your materials.
  • Or, if you store client info on your computer and a hacker gets in, causing a data breach. Cyber liability insurance pays for damage control, investigations, and even legal fees if needed.

With educational consultant insurance on your side, you can face the unexpected with confidence and show your clients that you’re serious about protecting their interests.

Step 6: Spread the Word

Spread the word about what you do by talking to people, asking for referrals, and teaming up with schools and educational groups. Attend industry events like conferences and workshops to meet potential clients and show them why they should choose you.

Step 7: Keep Learning

Education is constantly changing, so it’s important to keep your compass pointed toward continuous learning . Stay up to date with the latest trends, books and research, and best practices in the field of education, and always keep an eye out for professional development workshops, conferences, and webinars to ensure you’re never going stagnant.

Where Can I Find Educational Consulting Jobs?

You can find educational consulting jobs in various places, like:

  • Online job boards: Popular boards include Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn.
  • Consulting firms: Working under a firm provides valuable experience and networking opportunities.
  • Schools and universities: Many institutions hire consultants for specific projects or initiatives, often listed on their career pages or through networking.
  • Government org and non-profits: Organizations frequently seek consultants for policy development and program evaluation.
  • Industry events and conferences: Attend industry events to connect with potential employers.

How to Get Accepted to Multiple Top Business Schools

Maximize every opportunity to emphasize the unique contributions you can bring to an MBA class.

Get Accepted to Multiple Top B-schools

When applying, it's important tailor your application to each school and have well-developed goal statement that plots the intended career path, experts say.

Nikita Srivastava applied to seven MBA programs and got admitted to three: Yale University School of Management in Connecticut, New York University's Stern School of Business and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business in Illinois.

“I definitely was not expecting it,” says Srivastava, who chose Booth.

She attributes her multiple acceptances to top B-schools to tying her personal and professional backgrounds to her post-MBA goals. Her background was mainly in communications, media relations and public relations, and she credits her MBA admissions consultant for showing her how to tell her story.

“Lean into what makes you unique," Srivastava advises MBA applicants .  " Think about how this unique quality will enhance the classroom for your peers and professors. Be proud of it and own it.”

Being accepted into multiple B-schools can allow an applicant to weigh program fit, potential opportunities and scholarship offers. Here are some things to consider to increase your chances of being accepted to multiple top business schools .

Apply More Broadly

Getting admitted to numerous MBA programs is a numbers game, says Sam Weeks, an MBA admissions consultant and founder of Sam Weeks Consulting.

“The more business schools a prospective applicant applies to, the more likely they are to be accepted into more than one school. That’s why we recommend to our clients to apply to at least six schools, if possible,” says Weeks, who has an MBA from the University of Oxford in England.

Students should not only apply to more schools to increase their chances of multiple admissions, but also more broadly in terms of school selectivity, experts say.

“This sounds obvious, but there are many applicants who go into this process only considering a limited set of schools with slimmer acceptance odds. They say the ROI is not there for other schools outside their ambitious targeting,” says Alex Leventhal, an MBA admissions consultant at Prep MBA Admissions Consulting.

Leventhal, who has an MBA from Harvard University Business School in Massachusetts, contends that the return on investment is compelling at more schools than most people think. He says applicants should look at the salary data of program graduates and the percentage of graduates who got jobs within three months after graduation.

“For example, the very top consulting firms recruit at a range of schools, and not just the top three,” Leventhal says.

He also suggests looking for joint degree programs to increase your odds by applying to a specialty track that a school is promoting or trying to fill.

Leventhal said he has had "some less-than-stellar clients" get accepted to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School , likely because they applied to the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies joint program "for one of their less popular regional tracks. Or a client who got into Stanford Graduate School of Business because their professional experiences fit so nicely with a limited scholarship program focusing on the sustainable food supply chain.”

Customize Each Application

Schools like to see B-school applicants demonstrate familiarity with their programs, experts say. Leventhal says schools will “look for evidence that you have engaged with their program and talked to current students and alumni.”

Applicants should demonstrate they took the time to research a particular school “and all it has to offer, and consider both what they will learn from the program and how they will add value on campus,” says MBA consultant Scott Edinburgh, founder of Personal MBA Coach.

This means taking time to develop a strong personal story that connects past choices with future goals, says Edinburgh, who has an MBA from Wharton.

Applicants should demonstrate four key things in their tailored applications, he says: “Ability to handle the academic rigor of the target MBA program, leadership potential, how they will uniquely add value on campus and clarity of purpose.”

When applying, Weeks says, it’s important to have a well-developed goal statement that “charts out the applicant's intended career path and the impact they expect to have in their career.” He says those goals should be ambitious but attainable and make sense for the applicant.

Knowing what makes top business schools distinct "and then showing how you fit into those unique scenarios is essential to securing admits,” says Candy Lee LaBalle, an MBA admissions expert and founder of mbaClarity, formerly LaBalle Admissions.

Highlight Extracurricular Activities

Professional accomplishments that demonstrate leadership are great but shouldn’t be the only things highlighted. Edinburgh says applicants should show a passion for driving change.

“Successful MBA applicants are interesting people with plans to leave the world better than they found it in unique ways. Demonstrating passion and a track record of success in working towards this passion goes a long way,” Edinburgh says.

LaBalle says applicants who get admitted to multiple top B-schools tend to be “genuinely curious about the world, about learning, about having their perspectives challenged, and that shows in their hobbies and interests, work and goals.” They care deeply about the world and can demonstrate it, she adds, “whether that is mentoring classmates or starting an NGO that feeds thousands, and everything in between.”

Boost Your GMAT or GRE Score

If your GMAT or GRE score is lower than you had hoped for, take some more time to study and retake the exam.

“It is easier to get admits, and thus multiple admits, if your test score is strong and balanced between quantitative and verbal,” LaBalle says.

She says a strong, above-average test score can make a difference. “While there are many ways to offset a lowish test, the hard truth is that the higher your score, the better your odds of multiple admits.”

Students who don’t do well in the quantitative or analytical parts of the GMAT may prefer to take the GRE. Some business schools accept either test for MBA admissions.

Tests and other application materials aside, experts say securing strong letters of recommendation by supporters invested in your career and future is important to getting accepted to top MBA programs.

Apply to Schools Offering Scholarships

Applying to more schools can mean more scholarships that come with those admissions, which can give you options. Leventhal says his clients have focused on applying to more B-schools the last few cycles because they are increasingly interested in merit scholarships.

“The schools are trying to secure talented applicants with money off the tuition. As the price tag of the MBA has gone up, the merit pull can understandably matter. And schools that are reaches for an applicant generally won’t offer much in the way of merit grants,” Leventhal says.

Srivastava says she received some scholarships with each admissions offer, helping to relieve the burden of paying back student loans after graduation and giving her “freedom to focus on finding a career that would be a good fit for me both personally and professionally.”

A major bonus to getting accepted to multiple B-schools that offer scholarships is leverage, Weeks says. “You are in a strong position to negotiate scholarships.”

That includes awards at the most elite business schools. Students with more than one acceptance can inform schools that they received another offer and ask if any additional scholarship funding is available, he says.

Consultants needed for education system changes - christopher luxon.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon

Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says there is a need for consultants to achieve the required changes to the country's education system.

Staff say the Ministry of Education is already preparing consultancy firms to do the work of people who are being laid off .

The ministry has proposed cutting a total of 755 positions , of which 316 are currently vacant, to meet government cost-cutting targets.

The ministry has told consultancies it will have contracts for training and advising teachers on NCEA changes, and on the qualification's literacy and numeracy requirements.

RNZ understands both areas are currently covered by ministry staff, who are losing their jobs.

RNZ has also been told consulting firms are now asking some of the staff being made redundant to work for them, essentially doing the same work but at double the price the ministry would have paid.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told Morning Report he was not aware of anyone being made redundant and then re-hired as a consultant.

"I'm not aware of that, all I can just say is we are going to use consultants particularly in the roll out of structured literacy, we've got almost 9000 teachers to train before the end of the year, we want every teacher year zero to six to be able to teach structured literature in the same way... all across the country."

Asked if this proved that the ministry actually needed the people who were being made redundant, Luxon said there was really clear direction and ministries have been told to stop programmes that were not working and not a priority for the government.

The government was still committed to reducing its spend on consultants in the public service, Luxon said.

"But there will also still be a need for consultants where there are deep subject matter experts."
